Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting tickets to Rod Stewart’s 2023 Australian Tour

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.co.nz.

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Rod Stewart, with very special guest Cyndi Lauper, will be bringing their tour to New Zealand in April 2023.  Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.co.nz.

Rod Stewart & Cyndi Lauper, Spark Arena April 9, 2023 (Concert Review)

Marty Duda 0

Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper (and Jon Stevens ) teamed up for a hit-filled night of nostalgia and and fun at Auckland’s Spark Arena, closing out their tour in style.

Sorry Jon Stevens fans, but we missed the former Noiseworks front man as Easter commitments prevailed, although we did catch him duetting with Cyndi Lauper on Money Changes Everything.

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper

There were no such issues tonight as she dazzled the crowd in her bright yellow suit. Clocking in at just under an hour Cyndi and her band powered their way through 11 tunes, including all the hits… She Bop, Time After Time, I Drove All Night, Girls Just Want To Have Fun and True Colors.

Ever the feisty one, Lauper engaged in a bit of banter with “Mr Security Guard” reminding the security staff that this was a rock & roll show and not a jazz concert in her distinctive New York accent.

She urged the crowd to follow the rules, don’t dance in the aisles but by the time of Girls Just Want To Have Fun , the audience was having its own way with the aisles.

It wasn’t all fun and games, Cyndi got serious when addressing women’s rights, health care and abortion laws before singing Sally’s Pigeons (preface by a bit of Rod The Mod’s Sailing ).

Not My Father’s Son , from Kinky Boots was an unexpected and welcome highlight to the set, which, by the time Cyndi and Co finished, felt like her own headlining gig.

Good to see (and hear) her doing so well.

Rod Stewart

And then there’s Rod.

The 78-year-old rocker-turned disco star kicked his nearly-two-hour set off with….a cover of Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love , complete with six sparkly hot pants-wearing women….three vocalists, two violin players and one on keys…along with his usual band.

Rod Stewart

It just got better from there…Sam Cooke’s Twisting The Night Away was awesome as was the old Motown goodie, It Takes Two , featuring vocalist Beka Potter and then we got CCR’s Have You Ever Seen The Rain?

Great songs one and all (Rod’s always had a flare for picking a good tune) but I was starting to hanker for some of Stewart’s own material.

I became a fan back in 1971 when Every Picture Tells A Story topped the charts, and for me, Rod’s first 4 solo albums are all solid gold.

Sadly we only hear a handful of tunes from them, including a spine-tingling version of I’d Rather Go Blind with another stellar turn from the sax man.

The same can be said for Rod’s version of Tom Waits’ Downtown Train , and the acoustic set, featuring Danny Whitten’s I Don’t Want TO Talk About It , was wonderful.

So, what am complaining about?

There were times when this felt like a karaoke show…Rod would slip off stage (for a cup of tea and a lie down?) And the girls would sing Labelle’s Lady Marmalade or The Pointer Sisters’ I’m So Excited .

The sounded great…but this is supposed to be a Rod Stewart show.

Rod paid tribute to Christine McVie , but not to his old bandmate Jeff Beck

And I still can’t listen to Do You Think I’m Sexy.

My improved setlist would have him singing People Get Ready and Stay With Me and losing Young Turks and Baby Jane (and performing all of Every Picture Tells A Story ) .

That said, I had a great time, Rod looked and sounded in fine form and there’s something about seeing a 78-year-old man flanked by a half dozen beautiful blondes that is, well, so very Rod Stewart.

Some guys have all the luck.

This is a fair review and mostly what I felt also. I think People Get Ready got bumped for Have You Ever Seen The Rain which seemed unnecessary to me. But I loved I’d Rather Go Blind. Definitely didn’t need Do Ya Think I’m Sexy….but all together glad I went.

Whether you love 70s tunes, are obsessed with 80s tracks, live for the 90s or can't get enough 00s vibes, getting a musical blast from the past is rather easy in Aotearoa at the moment. Every week or so, an iconic name seems to be dropping tour dates — from Red Hot Chili Peppers , Elton John and  Blink-182 , through to the Backstreet Boys,   Vengaboys , and TLC .

The latest to join the list: Sir Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper. Off the back of an eight-stop tour in Australia , they're teaming up and coming to NZ in 2023 for two dates across the country . Yes, that means that 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', 'Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright),' 'Time After Time' and 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' are all going to get a whirl at the same gig.

Stewart is the headliner, with a huge focus on his hits, including 'You Wear It Well', 'You're In My Heart', 'Sailing', 'Rhythm Of My Heart' and 'Maggie May' as well across a massive two-hour set.

But having Lauper onboard is a huge drawcard, whether you love 'True Colours' or appreciate her Tony Award-winning work on the Kinky Boots musical, where she became the first solo woman to win the acclaimed prize for Best Original Score (music and lyrics). She'll play for an hour before Stewart.

The pair will be joined by Noiseworks and INXS' Jon Stevens for two shows here in New Zealand: firstly at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium on Wednesday, April 5, before taking over Mission Bay Winery in Hawke's Bay on Saturday, April 8 for those wine-and-dance kinds of gig-goers.

Rod Stewart & Cyndi Lauper

9th april 2023 spark arena, auckland, new zealand..

Review by Sarah Fleming . Photography by Doug Peters .

If music lovers were looking for an example of a masterclass show last night, then they would have had to have looked no further than Spark Arena, where Rod Stewart played the last of his three date New Zealand tour.

After several ‘delays’, Stewart and co finally made it down to Aotearoa and by golly, they gave Tāmaki Makaurau a show they would not soon forget, and the sold-out crowd were ready and waiting for it.

Often arenas tend to be half empty for opening acts, but this was not the case last night, as most ticket holders were seated and ready to go when Jon Stevens and his five-piece band took to the stage to lay down an albeit short but rocking set. Well known as the lead singer of Noiseworks, Stevens also spent time with INXS, so it was great to hear renditions of both ‘New Sensation’ and ‘Tear Us Apart’. Of course, the evening would not be complete without a few Noiseworks tracks, ‘Montego Bay’ (although it was cut short by Stevens due to time restrictions), ‘Hot Chili Woman’ and the 1987 track ‘Take Me Back’ seeing fans get up and dance in their seats.

The night was off to an excellent start, but there was still so much more to come!

When Cyndi Lauper was announced as support act for Rod Stewart, many a happy fan was made. Last here almost six years ago with Blondie, the sixty-nine-year-old showed that she still has it and is not afraid to use it. As she stepped out in a bright yellow suit with a top hat adorned with bunny ears for Easter the audience immediately showed their appreciation, the stage exploding into colour as the big screen visuals kicked in for ‘Hole in my Heart (All the Way to China)’

With a blow-up prop and giant doorway, the set had a wonderful 80’s vibe to it, old footage of Lauper playing in the background as her six-piece band provided the stonking musical accompaniment; Lauper herself getting in on the act as she grabbed a bass recorder for ‘She Bop’.

“So how you doin?” Lauper asked with her distinctive Brooklyn accent, her wry smile declaring that she was very much up for a night of entertainment. And entertain she did, not only with her repertoire of tracks, but with her wit as she at one-point cajoled security for asking people down in the front seats to sit down, declaring that this was not a “jazz concert” and that as long as they were not dancing in the aisles, what was the harm?

Her rendition of ‘I Drive All Night’ drove everyone wild, Lauper laying down the theatrics as she draped herself across the speakers; that is not to say that she didn’t have the vocals to match it, the audience going wild as she held the long notes with ease.

Joined onstage by Jon Stevens, a cover of The Brains ‘Money Changes Everything’ morphed into a fantastic adlib version that saw the two singers let loose and have some fun with it, before ‘Sally’s Pigeons’ a poignant video and speech from Lauper let everyone know just how disappointed she is with the state of her own country and how they treat a women’s right to autonomy over their own bodies, Lauper passionately congratulating New Zealand on standing up for human rights during the recent protests. ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ and ‘True Colours’ rounding out the set that was nigh on flawless.

By now the audience were almost chomping at the bit for Rod, his entrance onto an absolutely stunning stage welcomed like a returning conquering hero.

Accompanied by a twelve-piece band, who were colour co-ordinated in crisp white jackets and black sequins, bagpipes reminded one and all of Stewart’s pride in his heritage before a cover of Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ got the fans on their feet.

Being the last night of the tour, there was an air of relaxed fun to the band, Stewart on fire as he shook and swayed his way across the stage, his iconic hair and gold shoes completing the look.

While Stewart may have been the star of the show – and what a star he is, his voice having lost nothing despite his over sixty-year career – it was his band that not only held down the show as Rod would take the occasional leave of absence only to return in yet another iconic ensemble, but who stunned with their prowess. Including every instrument from violins, to harps, to even a banjo at one point, stand out musicians such as Jimmy Roberts on saxophone completely lit up the arena each and every time they stepped into the spotlight.

A trio of backup singers (Becca Kotte, Holly Brewer and Joanne Harper) also demonstrated that they could easily have a side project of their own, their versions of The Pointer Sisters ‘I’m So Excited’ and ‘Lady Marmalade’ bringing the house down; Kotte earlier joining Stewart for a rendition of ‘It Takes Two’ where their smiles genuinely portrayed just how much fun they were truly having.

Tap dancing and Irish violins intermingled with funk laid bass solos and double drum kits as Stewart rocked his way threw a slew of tracks that kept the fans on their toes throughout the night; beloved favourites such as ‘Maggie May’, laid side by side with legendary classics such as ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and ‘Downtown Train’ by Tom Waits, poignant moments such as Stewart paying homage to the people of Ukraine and Volodymyr Zelenskyy by dressing in the colours of their flag and delivering a beautiful rendition of ‘Rhythm of My Heart’ touching everyone’s hearts.

And of course, being a larger-than-life fan of the Glasgow Celtics, Stewart at one point donned a green suit as his band threw out inflatable footballs to attendees, wonderful family photos of Stewart and his kids moving across the screens.

Sadly, this is more than likely the last time New Zealand will have the pleasure of seeing Stewart on our shores, but if ever there was a show to go out on, last night was certainly the one.

Perfection.

Review: Sir Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens at Spark Arena, Auckland, April 9, 2023

Farewell, then, to the rocker, the hair, the raspy, world-renowned voice. Farewell to the man who captured and then lost the heart of Our Rach. The bloke with whom – above all other rock stars – you’d perhaps feel the most comfortable sharing a pint and trading yarns at the pub.

Rod Stewart pulled down the curtain on his final rock concert in New Zealand on Sunday night, a rousing, spirited, and soulful farewell at Spark Arena in Auckland. He might not be performing in the biggest stadiums anymore but by god, that voice, the mischief and the twinkle have endured.

He was in a great mood - his beloved Celtic had beaten arch-rivals Rangers overnight - and he brought the banter and some advice for Auckland Council. He loves the country, seen many sights but please fix the “wonky” pavements. He almost came to grief outside a Starbucks. “I think you have to fill those potholes up.”

He certainly filled Spark Arena. A sellout crowd of 10,000 was taken on a trip spanning music across the decades and all manner of instruments in a high-quality, slick and beautifully lit production. From the all-in, rousing anthems to the acoustic set, the crowd was in harmony the entire way, especially so for The First Cut is the Deepest , Maggie May, I Don’t Want to Talk About It and You’re in My Heart .

Rod Stewart praised the crowd for their singalong skills at Spark Arena. Photo / Brett Phibbs

“I love this,” Stewart said at one point. He was “flabbergasted” and “so happy” when the crowd made its intentions known early, singing every word of the Creedence Clearwater Revival cover Have You Ever Seen the Rain .

Twenty-three songs, four costume changes, a 12-piece band and those incredible instruments - the sax, the violins, the bass, drums, tambourine and a harp. If the kitchen sink could make a tune, you know Stewart would have it in there.

A lot of the heavy lifting came in the form of Stewart’s mind-blowing saxophonist Jimmy Roberts and superb backup singers - Becca Kotte, Holly Brewer and Joanne Harper. Kotte stepped up for an It Takes Two duet and the trio’s I’m So Excited and Lady Marmalade performances kept the house rocking as Stewart changed outfits and recharged that voice.

It was the 78-year-old who was the ringmaster of this colourful, harmonious circus - and he did not disappoint.

He paid tribute to the Ukrainians and president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, donning a blue jacket and yellow shirt - the Ukrainian flag colours - for a special rendition of Rhythm Of My Heart . “We can’t let the Russians get away with this - this is for Zelenskyy and all the Ukrainian fighters.”

Maggie May , his most successful song - the one that “changed everything” as he says in his autobiography - was a special highlight at Spark. Boisterous and crazy and famously, loosely based on an over-all-too-quickly encounter with an older woman at a music festival in 1961 (think Prince Harry’s recent revelations in Spare), Maggie May was lucky to be even in his repertoire.

He was not overly happy after he wrote it – “rambling”, “no chorus”, “sort of OK, I suppose”. An American radio station played it by accident or accidentally on purpose soon after it was written in 1971, sending it into the stratosphere within weeks. Fifty-two years later, it endures.

Just like the man who performs it.

The Spark Arena crowd was already Rod-ready after another hall of famer, Cyndi Lauper, rolled back the years.

Lauper could easily have been the main act on another tour - her boundless energy and a voice that still hits the high notes stirred the crowd to their feet for Girls Just Wanna Fun. She had them in her hands for True Colours.

Cyndi Lauper performs during her set before the Rod Stewart concert at Spark Arena. Photo / Brett Phibbs

A legend who is now using her music to put the world to rights - she is angry and clearly motivated after the US Supreme Court‘s decision last year to overturn the Roe v Wade abortion rights ruling. “Remember, we’re the humans here, we need to take care of each other,” she implored.

Many will have come away from the concert buzzing about Lauper as much as they did Stewart.

Jon Stevens, before Lauper, was equally powerful, albeit slightly rushed at the end of his set, closing Montego Bay early but leaving the crowd with an emotional Take Me Back rendition.

Stevens returned to the stage at Lauper‘s invitation, belting out a ruthless Money Changes Everything duet. After a minute or so with a lyric sheet he threw it away and went with the vibe, jump-started by Lauper’s incredible energy.

As for Stewart, this was his 21st concert in New Zealand and his ninth in Auckland – a night after an equally loved performance at the Mission concert in Napier.

It’s likely the last time we see him, at least in this format - he’s certainly indicated as such. He left the Spark crowd with a soulful Sailing that brought the hairs on your neck up and the curtain down. No encore. Just the runner to the waiting limo. Next tour stop, Mexico.

Farewell, then, Rod, you were superb.

Rod Stewart to carry on with Napier show, announces Auckland date with Cyndi Lauper

  • Darren Bevan

Promoters of the Sir Rod Stewart Mission Estate Winery Concert date on Saturday, April 8 say they are "working towards" the gig "proceeding as scheduled" after the devastating impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle.

In a statement announcing an Auckland tour date for Stewart and support act Cyndi Lauper , the promoters added that they would continue to monitor the recovery of the Hawke's Bay region and pledged money from the new tour date to the disaster relief fund.

"Live Nation will continue to monitor the recovery efforts in Hawke’s Bay and we are working towards the Rod Stewart with Cyndi Lauper date at Mission Estate on Saturday, April 8 proceeding as scheduled."

Stewart and Lauper will play Auckland's Spark Arena on Sunday, April 9.

More from Newshub

Tickets to the newly announced Auckland show will go on sale at 10am, Friday, March 3.

They will also play the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Wednesday, April 5.

It comes after Sting announced he would be cancelling his planned Mission Winery Estate concert date "out of respect" to those affected by the severe weather event.

Two weeks ago, organisers announced the build at the venue had commenced and the site was "in relatively good condition" despite the surrounding regions being severely affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.

That social media post was met with a furious backlash with many saying the decision to press ahead for Saturday, March 4 was in "bad taste".

Sting subsequently cancelled the date , and his promoters promised they'd be donating money to the disaster relief fund.

"Out of respect to those affected by the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle and in the interest of focusing critical attention and resources on relief efforts, Sting's concert on Saturday, March 4 at Mission Estate Winery in Napier will no longer proceed.

"A donation will be made by Sting and Live Nation to the Hawke’s Bay Foundation’s Cyclone Relief Fund," the promoters said.

Sting's Christchurch concert on Wednesday, March 1 is unaffected.

Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper (born June 22nd, 1953), better known simply as Cyndi Lauper, is an American singer and songwriter. She hails from Queens, New York.

In the popular imagination, at least, Lauper is arguably best known as a little bit of a one-hit wonder; it’s certainly true that ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, her international smash hit in 1983, is the most enduring track from her back catalogue, but the truth is that Lauper boasts a far more impressive track record than most artists to be tagged with the one hit wonder label - in fact, she was the first female solo artist to see her first four singles chart in the top five on the Billboard singles rundown in the U.S, with ‘All Through the Night’, ‘Time After Time’ and ‘She Bop’ also making the cut.

Her awards history, too, is incredibly impressive; she’s scooped gongs at the Grammys, Emmys and Tonys - one of only twenty performers ever to do so - as well as picking up awards from Billboard, MTV (at the VMAs) and VH1. She’s also become well known over the years for her charitable activities, in particular as a champion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender causes; she was asked to perform at the 2013 second term inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama in recognition of her efforts over the years.

Live reviews

Cyndi Lauper is an icon... When I was young I remember stealing my older sister's "She's So Unusual" cassette tape to rock out to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and all the other upbeat, empowering pop songs on this memorable debut album. I felt so cool and grown-up. I may have also “borrowed” some of my sister’s clothes, but let’s not tell her about that! Decades later, I own my own copy of the album on iTunes, but not much else has changed. I still envy all her cool funky outfits and admire her relentless determination to be her uncompromising and inspirational self. In concert, Cyndi Lauper has not missed a beat. I saw her for the first time touring with Deborah Harry from Blondie and it turned out to be the best girls’ night ever!!! Lauper performs all her best hits, puts on a great show, and provides fun and on-point audience interaction. You will end the night feeling great about life, carefree, and ready to embrace every opportunity that life may throw at you to “just wanna have fun.” Cyndi Lauper is a great role model for girls of any age. Though her fun pop style and uncanny high notes may draw you in, her personal stories, deeper songs, obvious humility and kindness, and personal dedication to many and varied causes will earn your following long-term.

Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper has one of those universally recognisable stage names that spans countries and generations all at once. The record breaking songstress injected some much needed angst and rock into the modern pop charts and was seen as something very different during the time of her breakthrough. With ten albums in her discography and 50 million records sold, designing a career defining setlist is no easy feat for Lauper yet her fans are receptive to most material played this evening.

Her evocative stage persona and passion for performance is really inspiring for younger artists. During a large amount of the show you forget that Cyndi is actually now in her 60s yet still demonstrates the power and abilities of a performer half her age. She clearly wants the fans to have the best night when coming to watch her perform so throws herself into renditions of mega-hits such as 'I Drove All Night' and the timeless 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' which of course brings the house down. She is an admirable performer and a true figure in female empowerment within the music industry.

I saw Cyndi open for Cher at Valley View Casino Center, incredible job Lucky to have a strong talent like Cyndi as an opener. She sang old and new songs, her voice was as strong as ever. She entered through the crowd singing SHE BOB, with "TEAM LAUPER" following her to the stage. Money Changes everything is always a favorite of mne and she sang it. Also sang her new kit frm Kinky Boots, The Sex is in the Heel. A treat !! From bring ya to the Brink, she sand Into the Nightlife !! First time to hear that live !! She finished with AT LAST ! what a warmup she gave for CHER !!

Cyndi can do it all! Great venue and wonderful sound. She acknowledged the Orlando tradgedy then did an amazing show, which was exactly what we needed. The mix of classics and country was a perfect balance. Highlight? The entire venue singing along with "True colors" Ms. lauper being presented with a rainbow flag and wrapping it around herself like a blanket. We love you Cyndi and thank you a bit of a relief from the hard parts of life.

Seen her open last night for Rod Stewart at Tinley Park, IL. She's absolutely phenomenal. She looks and sings as good as ever and great performer. Her band is fantastic. Great story teller and she's funny too. Rod Stewart has always been great but finally got to see prob the most talented performer from the 80s era of music and she and her band did not hesitate to deliver. Love ya Cyndi.

Boy George was excellent. He has a surprisingly powerful voice, great stage presence and a dozen people backing him up. Jean Genie a real treat cover as was Get it On. Cyndi needs to shut up and sing. Singing voice great, speaking voice grates. Long stories and rants a bore. Rosie is still just bitter and angry. Great show over all though.

Truly disappointed. If you want to experience a political rally with someone telling you how to think (with a bit of music mixed in) then this is the show for you !

Big speech, followed by song, then MORE politics, song, etc... many people saying same thing...we went to see concert & enjoy, instead we get political rally...

Was a stunning show at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch apart from one thing. I was HIGHLY disappointed there were no big screens up and running and the ONE screen that was going on stage behind Cyndi was not even of her! It was a scenery backdrop. Nearly every person I spoke to said the same thing. No one could see her!!!

Cyndi Lauper was amazing!!!! Her voice was beautiful, she could hold a note like you wouldn’t believe. Lots of energy and she looked fantastic!! Loved that she played recorder and sitar. The crowd really was into her. She came out to sing a duet with Rod Stewart on It Takes Two which was really a nice touch. Love her!

What a talent. I recently saw Cyndi Lauper at the Hollywood Bowl and she was phenomenal. The voice! she still has an amazing voice, she gives the audience bits of wisdom throughout the show and plays all her hits. Hearing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" backed by an orchestra was delightful. 10/10 would recommend.

Wide angle reviews, interviews and opinion on music, travel and the arts by writer Graham Reid

Rod stewart, cyndi lauper, jon stevens. reviewed (2023): all the hits, the misses and the final lap.

ROD STEWART, CYNDI LAUPER, JON STEVENS. REVIEWED (2023): All the hits, the misses and the final lap

In this Age of Bitterness And Rage where many people take themselves far too seriously (expecting other to do the same) and humour seems in short supply, it's encouraging to know that 78-year old Sir Rod Stewart is still out there enjoying himself and bring happiness to others.

As he wrote in his hilarious autobiography published more than a decade ago, “I never thought . . . the 'being a rock star' aspect of being a rock star was beside the point, or even something I needed to apologise for.

“If I hadn't considered the drinking/shagging/carrying-on to be at least part of my terms of employment . . . I would have felt I was letting down the union.”

Sir Rod's crimes for a cabal of pursed-lip critics are manifest: too many blondes, too much laughter in the serious business of rock'n'soul, and of course betraying his gift in lesser songs.

But for every Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (which he always pointed out was sung by a character, not him) and Hot Legs there was the moving The Killing of Georgie (timely right now), the ache of Handbags and Gladrags and many more.

rod1

But those days are long gone and today he is taking the last laps on his The Hits tour to bring those of his songs in the audience's autobiographies to life once more and just enjoy himself.

At the Spark Arena, Auckland before a capacity crowd of a notably older demographic he certainly started well: the piped-in sound of Scotland the Brave (is Rod the world's most famous living Scotsman who never lived in that country?) he came on with gorgeous women and in a homage to Robert Palmer's video with a similarly glamorous “backing band” sang Palmer's Addicted to Love.

It was a brilliant start, got the audience on his side because here was a popular and recognisable hit (some may have thought it was one of his) and had a large dollop of self-effacing humour.

rod2

Rod had the wit, the look (cheekbones, hair, tan, narrow hips, nice threads and shoes), a cracking proper band and a massive stage set with back projections. It was all there, except . . .

All except the voice which became apparent on You Wear It Well which followed, and was even more noticeable later on Sam Cooke's Twistin' the Night Away, the duet of It Takes Two (which he'd done with Tina Turner), Forever Young and First Cut is the Deepest.

Ends of lines disappeared, the distinctive and endearing rasp was smoothed out and his delivery of ballads – notably Maggie May – lacked nuance.

Not that many would have cared or noticed: for decades – we were doing it back in '91 at Western Springs – we've been singing Rod's songs back at him (Sailing, anyone?).

And for the first third of this concert with a set list which sometimes seemed like a Classic Hits programme – Some Guys Have All the Luck, Creedence's Have You Ever Seen the Rain – the audience delighted in the familiar and Rod's cheeky presence full of asides, winks and gentle hip wiggles.

rod3

The enjoyment was palpable, but the band and the audience were doing most of the heavy lifting, especially the band which at times had half a dozen of his gorgeous women on stage as backing singers and musicians.

The two fiddle players were given plenty of space and time – notably when Rod went off, the screen brought in a Highland pipe band and the women fiddlers danced a wee jig for a while. It was only 40 minutes in but Rod needed the breather while the audience was treated to a kind of Las Vegas-style cabaret of the Coors-meets-Riverdance.

At moments like these – and there were far too many – it almost seemed as if Rod was incidental in his own production . . . and it was terrific production of lighting, back projections, footage and classic songs, with the star having plenty of time and space to get his breath back.

Stewart's populist and crowd-pleasing aside -- albeit rather sad at times and often disappointing for his diminished vocals – the night probably belonged to Cyndi Lauper whose voice can drive in nails a mile away and whose Noo Yawk humour was just as winning as Rod's sly jack-the-lad deliveries.

cyndi

And as with Rod, she knew what her audience wanted, and delivered.

Time has wrought some interesting changes in how her songs have increasingly been received, always as powerful feminist statements (She Bop, Girls Just Want to Have Fun particularly) but as the footage shown during Fun proved – women on pro-choice and Roe Vs Wade marches with “girls just want to have fun(damental rights)” posters – they have become even more important and resonant.

Her songs have grown, changed and acquired new meaning, Rod's have been embalmed in the memory of the times when we first heard them.

Lauper joked about her thick accent but when she was serious we were in no doubt what she meant about women's rights and abortion (the footage accompanying the moving Sally's Pigeon).

She also spoke directly to the audience about being able to dance but keeping out of the aisles and gently remonstrated with a security guard (just doing his job as she acknowledged) who seemed a little over-vigilant.

“It's not jazz,” she said to huge applause . . . then in an unintentional irony sang her wonderful Time After Time which Miles Davis had covered.

cyndi2

Sure he had the songs, some by INXS who he has fronted, but there was a generic Australian bar-band delivery to everything, he's the one you call when AC/DC/ Jimmy Barnes and others of that yelping ilk aren't available.

His brief stab at the local hit Montego Bay was obligatory and perfunctory.

But what we learn from a big stadium show like this is the investment the audience has (a single ticket $300 and upward for many) in songs and artists they have loved and respected, and whose stars are now on their final rodeo.

ticket

Sir Rod offered himself, his songs (and those of others) for us to sing along to but his act was also full of gestures to please the crowd.

(I have no doubt about the sincerity of his salute to and support of Ukraine later in the show, but I -- a longtime supporter and defender of Rod -- missed it. I'd left earlier to avoid further disappointment).

Ultimately his production reminded those who came for the voice and the feeling that we were shortchanged . . . through no fault of his own other than the attritions of age.

But 78 and still having fun?

It's very welcome in this Age of Bitterness and Rage, innit?

Billie Eilish, Cyndi Lauper, Dave Matthews and hundreds more ask Congress to fix concert ticket pricing

H undreds of musicians including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, the Pixies and Blue Oyster Cult petitioned Congress on Thursday to regulate concert ticket pricing.

“We are joining together to say that the current system is broken,” reads a letter signed by nearly 300 performers and sent to lawmakers. “Predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price.”

The “ Fix the Tix ” request is specifically addressed to the leaders of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, Sens. Maria Cantwell , D-Wash., and Ted Cruz , R-Texas.

The letter accuses unregulated companies that resell tickets of “siphoning money from the live entertainment ecosystem” by using bots and deceitful advertising practices to sell seats for 20 times their face value, even when shows aren’t sold out.

Ticket sales have hit record numbers since the end of the pandemic and subsequent resumption of touring.

Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour became the first ever billion-dollar concert series at the close of 2023. When the “Don’t Blame Me” singer visited New York's MetLife Stadium last year, some seats sold for $16,000 . The average resale price for a ticket to Swift’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour was about $157, according to Pitchfork, while resold Eras Tour tickets reportedly averaged $3,800.

Though Swift wasn’t a Fix the Tix signee, she has expressed frustration with organizations like Ticketmaster .

Other artists onboard for Thursday’s initiative include Cowboy Junkies, They Might Be Giants, Fall Out Boy, Becky G, Sonic Youth, Green Day and Diplo.

“Predatory resellers do not invest in creating a great live experience or fostering the live music ecosystem,” the musicians told lawmakers. “They simply profit off of the hard work of artists, venues and the crew.”

The average face-value ticket price for a concert in 2023 was just under $80 , according to Pitchfork. That’s a nearly $10 hike from 2019 pre-pandemic pricing.

Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?

As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.

Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.

It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.

The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-M.N., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."

"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."

The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.

It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.

"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.

The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).

Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.

So how did this letter come together, and why now?

NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.

"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."

Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.

Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .

For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.

"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.

The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.

Lauren Jauregui Says She's 'Exploring Polyamory' After Splitting from Ex Sasha Mallory: 'I Just Feel Very Free'

"I want to belong to myself primarily, and then I want to leave space for whoever I meet and I to create boundaries between us," said Jauregui

Lauren Jauregui is single and ready to mingle.

The Fifth Harmony alum opened up on a new episode of the 2 Dykes and a Mic podcast about splitting from ex-partner Sasha Mallory and revealed she's currently looking to explore polyamory.

"My current ex and I got together because we went on tour together and danced together," said Jauregui, 27, of Mallory, a former So You Think You Can Dance contestant who performed alongside the "Always Love" singer as a dancer on tour.

Despite breaking up, she remains "besties" with Mallory. "We're really close, actually. She's one of my best friends," explained Jauregui, who identifies as queer and went Instagram official with her ex in February 2023.

The musician joked that "it's very queer of both of us" to continue as friends after ending the romantic element of their relationship before going in-depth on what she's looking for now.

"I’m also kind of in this space of exploring polyamory a little bit," said Jauregui. "I don’t really know what it’s gonna end up shaping up to look like, I just know that I’m in a space right now at this point in my life where I’m like, I want to belong to myself primarily, and then I want to leave space for whoever I meet and me to create boundaries between us, whether it’s like, ‘Oh no, we’re just platonic,’ or ‘There’s kind of a little vibe here.'"

She continued, "We can explore that, and it won’t necessarily affect if I’m exploring something with someone else,’ you know? Obviously, I’m super communicative, so I would never put someone in that scenario that doesn’t want to be in that scenario. But I just feel very free right now, and I don’t feel like this monogamous, held-down energy is really for me."

"But then also, I’m a U-Haul-ass bitch , so the right person comes in and I’m like, ‘Forget it. Everybody leave. I’m getting married.’ I’m such a Cancer," added Jauregui with a laugh.

The former X Factor contestant, who previously dated rapper Ty Dolla $ign , specified that she's not "in a hookup space" at the moment but rather wants to explore different types of connection.

"I’m not in a space of wanting to f--- random people at all, like literally at all," said Jauregui. "I think I might be demisexual, ‘cause I went through the phase of trying to just sleep with people, and I hated it. I hated it. In order for me to be really turned on and enjoy sex, I need to know that you care about me as a human being. I can’t be transactional for you."
