Places the U.S. Government Warns Not to Travel Right Now

You may want to reconsider traveling to these countries right now.

Do Not Travel to These Countries

Crime, civil unrest and terrorism are common risk factors for countries that end up on the State Department's "Do Not Travel" advisory list.

In 2024, tourism across the globe is “well on track” to return to pre-pandemic levels, according to projections by UN Tourism.

Global conflicts and natural disasters , ranging from a series of coups across Africa to catastrophic earthquakes in the Middle East affected international travel patterns throughout 2023. Still, international tourist arrivals reached 87% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023, according to estimates by UN Tourism .

In January 2024 alone, about 4.6 million U.S. citizens left the country for international destinations, 17% higher than the same month in 2019, according to the International Trade Administration . But some destinations warrant more caution than others.

On Oct. 19, 2023, following the outbreak of war between Israel and Gaza and flaring tensions in the region, the U.S. State Department issued a worldwide caution advisory due to “increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.” Prior to this update, the most recent worldwide caution advisory was issued in 2022 after a U.S. strike killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s successor as leader of Al Qaeda, causing “a higher potential for anti-American violence.” The worldwide caution advisory remains in effect.

The U.S. State Department also issues individual travel advisory levels for more than 200 countries globally, continually updating them based on a variety of risk indicators such as health, terrorism and civil unrest. Travel advisory levels range from Level 1, which means exercise normal precautions, to Level 4, which means do not travel there.

About 10% of countries – 19 total – have a Level 4: “Do Not Travel” advisory as of Mar. 4. In Level 4 countries, the U.S. government may have “very limited ability” to step in should travelers’ safety or security be at risk, according to the State Department. Crime, civil unrest, kidnapping and terrorism are common risk factors associated with Level 4 countries.

So far in 2024, the State Department made changes to the existing Level 4 advisories for Myanmar, Iran and Gaza, and moved Niger and Lebanon off of the Level 4 list.

Places With a Level 4 Travel Advisory

These are the primary areas the U.S. government says not to travel to right now, in alphabetical order:

Jump to Place: Afghanistan Belarus Burkina Faso Central African Republic Myanmar (formerly Burma) Gaza Haiti Iran Iraq Libya Mali Mexico North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) Russia Somalia South Sudan Sudan Syria Ukraine Venezuela Yemen

Afghanistan: The Central Asian country is wrestling with “terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping and crime,” according to the State Department. U.S. citizens are specifically at risk for wrongful detention and kidnapping. In 2022, the government reinstituted public floggings and executions, and women’s rights are disappearing under Taliban control. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul halted operations in August 2021. Since the Taliban took control , many forms of international aid have been halted . Meanwhile, in 2023, some of the year’s deadliest earthquakes killed more than 2,400 in Afghanistan while the country continues to face a years-long extreme drought.

Belarus: Belarus, which shares a western border with Russia and a southern border with Ukraine, has been flagged for “Belarusian authorities’ continued facilitation of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the buildup of Russian military forces in Belarus, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential of civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus.” The U.S. Embassy in Minsk halted operations in February 2022.

Burkina Faso: Terrorism, crime and kidnapping are plaguing this West African nation. Terrorist attacks may target hotels, restaurants and schools with little to no warning, and the East and Sahel regions of the country are under a state of emergency. In late November 2023, hundreds died in clashes between state security forces and rebels near the country’s border with Mali. In June, more than 2 million people in Burkina Faso were displaced due to “violence linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.”

Central African Republic: While there have not been specific incidents of U.S. citizens targeted with violence or crime, violent crime and sudden closure of roads and borders is common. The advisory states that “Embassy Bangui’s limited capacity to provide support to U.S. citizens, crime, civil unrest, and kidnapping” is a factor in its assessment. Recent data from UNICEF suggests the country has the worst drinking water accessibility of all countries in 2022.

Myanmar (Formerly Burma): Armed conflict and civil unrest are the primary reasons to not travel to this Southeast Asian country, which experienced a military coup in early 2021. Limited health care resources, wrongful detentions and “areas with land mines and unexploded ordnance” are also listed as risk factors. After Ukraine and Israel, Myanmar had the highest conflict-related death toll in 2023.

Gaza : Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization as designated by the State Department, controls much of the Gaza Strip, which shares borders with both Israel and Egypt. On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas fighters broke across the border into Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers in a brazen attack that stunned Israelis. On Oct. 10, Israel hit the Gaza Strip with “the fiercest air strikes in its 75-year conflict” according to Reuters . The conflict has since escalated into war between Israel and Hamas, with regular Israeli airstrikes leading to extensive civilian casualties in Gaza. As of mid-December, nearly 85% of Gaza’s population were displaced from their homes, according to UN estimates . The region continues to face shortages of food , water, electricity and medical supplies , with conditions deemed “far beyond a humanitarian crisis.” The State Department warns of terrorism and armed conflict within Gaza’s borders.

Haiti: In July 2023, the Department of State ordered all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members to leave the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince in response to the increased risk of kidnapping and violent crime in the country , as well as armed conflict between gangs and police. The travel advisory states that cases of kidnapping “often involve ransom negotiations and U.S. citizen victims have been physically harmed during kidnappings.” The travel advisory also states that “U.S. citizens in Haiti should depart Haiti as soon as possible” given “the current security situation and infrastructure challenges.” A series of gang attacks in late September 2023 caused thousands to flee their homes, and many aid groups have been forced to cut or suspend operations amid escalating violence in recent months.

Iran: Terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest are risk factors for all travelers to Iran, while U.S. citizens are specifically at risk for “arbitrary arrest.” U.S.-Iranian nationals such as students, journalists and business travelers have been arrested on charges of espionage and threatening national security. Executions in Iran rose sharply between 2021 and 2022, bringing the country’s total to nearly 580 people over the year, according to a report by Amnesty International released in May 2023.

Iraq: The State Department cites “terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict [and] civil unrest” as cause for the country’s Level 4 distinction. Iraq’s northern borders, and its border with Syria, are especially dangerous. Since the escalation of conflict in neighboring Israel in October, there has been an increase in attacks against Iraqi military bases, which host U.S. troops and other international forces. In October 2023, non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members were ordered to leave the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Libya: Following the end of its dictatorship over a decade ago, Libya has been wrought with internal conflict between armed groups in the East and West. Armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, kidnapping and terrorism are all risk factors. U.S. citizens have been targets of kidnapping for ransom, with terrorists targeting hotels and airports frequented by Westerners. The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli halted operations in 2014. In mid-September 2023, floods, which some say were intensified by climate change , killed thousands in eastern Libya. Clashes between armed factions escalated across the country in the latter half of 2023, including in the capital city of Tripoli and in Benghazi.

Mali: After experiencing military coups in 2020 and 2021, crime, terrorism and kidnapping are all prevalent threats in this West African landlocked nation. In July 2022, non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families were ordered to leave the country due to higher risk of terrorist activity. A U.N. report in August 2023 said that military groups in the country, including both Mali security forces and possibly Russian Wagner mercenaries, were spreading terror through the use of violence against women and human rights abuses. Democratic elections were supposed to occur in February 2024, but Mali’s military junta postponed the plans indefinitely. In December, the U.N. officially ended a decade-long peacekeeping presence in the country, which had been among the agency’s deadliest missions, with hundreds of the mission personnel killed since 2013.

Mexico: Each state in Mexico is assessed separately for travel advisory levels. Six of the 32 states in Mexico are designated as Level 4: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Crime and kidnapping are listed as the primary risk factors throughout the country. Nearly 112,000 people were missing across the country as of October, a number the U.N. has called “alarming.”

North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea): U.S. passports are not valid for travel “to, in, or through” this country, home to one of the world's longest-running dynastic dictatorships. The travel advisory states that the Level 4 distinction is due to “the continuing serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. nationals.” In July 2023, a U.S. soldier fled across the border into North Korea, where he is believed to be in North Korean custody, the first American detained in the North in nearly five years. He was returned to U.S. custody in September 2023.

Russia: The travel advisory for Russia cites its invasion of Ukraine , harassment of U.S. citizens by Russian government officials and arbitrary law enforcement as a few of the reasons for the Level 4 designation. Chechnya and Mount Elbrus are specifically listed as Level 4 regions. Terrorism, civil unrest, health, kidnapping and wrongful detention are all noted as risks.

Russia Invades Ukraine: A Timeline

Somalia: A severe drought resulting from five failed rainy seasons in a row killed 43,000 people in 2022, and caused a famine amid conflict with Islamist insurgents . Violent crime is common throughout Somalia , pirates frequent its coast off the Horn of Africa, and medical facilities, where they exist, have limited capacity. Crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health and kidnapping are all risk factors. In January 2024, some passengers aboard a U.N.-contracted helicopter were taken hostage by al-Shabaab militants after the vehicle crashed in central Somalia.

South Sudan: Crime, kidnapping and armed conflict are the primary risk factors for South Sudan, which separated from Sudan in 2011, making it the world’s newest country . Weapons are readily available, and travelers have been victims of sexual assault and armed robbery.

Sudan: The U.S. evacuated its embassy in Khartoum in April 2023, and the country closed its airspace due to the ongoing conflict in the country, only permitting humanitarian aid and evacuation efforts. Fighting has escalated in the region between two warring generals seeking to gain control after a military coup in 2021 ousted the country’s prime minister. Civil unrest is the primary risk factor for Africa’s third largest country by area. Crime, terrorism, kidnapping and armed conflict are also noted. The International Criminal Court began investigating alleged war crimes and violence against African ethnic groups in the country in 2023. Millions have fled their homes due to conflict, and the U.N. has said its efforts to provide aid have been hindered by a lack of support, safety and resources. As recently as December 2023, the United Nations warned of catastrophic famine , with millions of children at-risk for malnutrition .

Syria: The advisory states that “No part of Syria is safe from violence,” with terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict and risk of unjust detention all potential risk factors. U.S. citizens are often a target for kidnappings and detention. The U.S. Embassy in Damascus halted operations in 2012. Fighting in neighboring Israel has escalated since October, and the conflict has spilled over into Syria, where the U.S. has carried out air strikes following drone and rocket attacks against American troops in Syria and Iraq, triggered by the Israel-Hamas war.

Ukraine: Russian setbacks in their invasion of Ukraine buoyed hopes in Ukraine in 2023. However, Ukraine is a Level 4 country due to Russia’s invasion, with crime and civil unrest also noted as risk factors. The country’s forces shot down two Russian fighter jets on Christmas Eve 2023, in a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “sets the right mood for the entire year ahead.”

Venezuela: Human rights abuses and lack of health care plague this South American nation, which has been in a political crisis since 2014. In 2019, diplomatic personnel were withdrawn from the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. Threats in the country include crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, wrongful detention and poor health infrastructure.

Yemen: Six of the nine risk factors defined by the State Department – terrorism, civil unrest, health risks, kidnapping, armed conflict and landmines – are all present in Yemen. Despite private companies offering tourist visits to the Yemeni island of Socotra, the U.S. government argues those arranging such visits “are putting tourists in danger.” Civil war and cholera are also both present throughout the country. The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa halted operations in 2015. The country has experienced a relative lull in the civil war fighting, but as peace negotiations have gotten traction, flare ups in the fighting have jeopardized progress. Most recently, the U.S. and U.K. have carried out a series of airstrikes in the country, targeting Iran-backed Houthi sites.

Other Countries to Watch

Since Jan. 1, the State Department has updated travel advisories for 17 different countries as well as for the West Bank and Gaza, adding information about specific regions or risk factors, or simply renewing an existing advisory. Travel advisory levels can change based on several factors in a nation, such as increased civil unrest, policies that affect human rights or higher risks of unlawful detention.

The State Department has given about 25 countries an assessment of Level 3, meaning it recommends people “reconsider travel” to those destinations.

On Oct. 14, one week after the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, Israel and the West Bank were both moved from Level 2 to Level 3, while Gaza remains at Level 4. The region’s travel advisory was updated in November to reflect travel restrictions for certain government employees who have not already left the area, and it was updated again on Jan. 3.

Following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in early October, the U.S. State Department raised Lebanon ’s travel advisory level from a Level 3 to a Level 4 level due to “the unpredictable security situation related to rocket, missile, and artillery exchanges” between Israel and Hezbollah or other militant groups. In December, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut returned to normal staffing and presence, and on Jan. 29, the country was moved back to Level 3. Crime, terrorism, armed conflict, civil unrest, kidnapping and unexploded landmines are listed as the country’s primary risk factors. However, the country’s borders with Syria and with Israel, as well as refugee settlements within Lebanon, are specifically noted as Level 4 regions.

China became a Level 3 country in late 2020, with an update in December 2022 citing “the surge in COVID-19 cases, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and COVID-19-related restrictions” as the reason for the advisory. In June 2023, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) was moved from the Level 3 to the Level 2 list, but travelers are still advised to be cautious in the area due to “arbitrary enforcement of local laws.” Meanwhile, Macau remains at Level 3.

Following an attempted coup in August 2023, Niger was elevated to Level 4 in August and the Department of State ordered all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members to leave the U.S. Embassy in Niamey. In early January 2024, the overall risk level for the country was lowered back to Level 3. Despite the new classification, the State Department still asks non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members to depart the country.

In mid-December 2023 there was an explosion at Guinea’s main fuel depot which has since affected access to health care and basic goods and services. The country was subsequently designated a Level 3 nation after having previously been Level 2. Concerns about civil unrest, health, crime and fuel shortages impacting local infrastructure were listed as the primary risk factors contributing to the change.

Several Level 3 countries are among the worst countries for human trafficking, as designated by the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report . Level 3 countries on this list include Papua New Guinea, Guinea Bissau, China and Chad. There are also nine Level 4 countries designated as among the worst for human trafficking: Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Syria, South Sudan and Venezuela.

Over 70 countries are currently at Level 2, meaning the State Department recommends travelers “exercise increased caution” when traveling to those destinations.

Botswana became the newest Level 2 country on Feb. 26 after having previously been Level 1, with crime noted as the primary risk factor.

France, which saw nationwide protests throughout 2023, has civil unrest and terrorism noted as risk factors for its Level 2 status, and Sweden’s Level 2 status is associated with risks of terrorism.

The Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas was updated in January to reflect water safety concerns. The advisory warns that “activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated” and notes that government personnel are “not permitted to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.” It also warns visitors to be mindful of sharks, weather and water conditions. The advisory also says that crime is a primary risk factor with gang-on-gang violence contributing to high homicide rates in some areas. Visitors are asked to “be vigilant” and to not physically resist robbery attempts.

Bangladesh 's Level 2 travel advisory was updated in October 2023 to add a note about the country’s general election , which took place Jan. 7, 2024. The advisory states “demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.” The U.S. has since claimed the country’s election was not free nor fair.

In November 2023, several Level 2 travel advisories were updated with new cautionary information. The advisory for Ghana was updated to reflect threats against LGBTQI+ travelers specifically, noting “anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric and violence have increased in recent years.” Meanwhile, the advisory for South Africa was updated in February to note that routes recommended by GPS may be unsafe with higher risk for crime.

Turkmenistan was moved off of the Level 2 list to become the newest addition to the Level 1 list on Jan. 22, meaning normal precautions are recommended but there are no risk factors causing travelers to practice increased caution.

The State Department asks travelers to pay attention to travel advisory levels and alerts , review country information pages for their destinations and read related country security reports before going abroad.

Airline startup: new airline fly 4 will not sell its own tickets.

Fly 4 will focus on providing capacity solutions to customer airlines.

  • Fly 4, a wet lease startup airline, will offer capacity solutions to carriers like Enter Air and TUI in the UK.
  • The airline will commence operations with four Boeing 737-800 aircraft and aims to expand its fleet to 10 planes by 2027.
  • Fly 4's goal is to become a leading ACMI service provider in Europe, focusing on longer-term, multi-year agreements.

A brand new wet lease startup airline, Fly 4, a joint venture between Polish charter carrier Enter Air and German leisure giant TUI Fly, is set to commence operations in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2024.

Under the ACMI model, Fly 4 will not sell tickets or initiate flights. Instead, the airline will specialize in offering capacity solutions to carriers, particularly Enter Air and TUI . In practical terms, this involves leasing out its aircraft and crews to enhance the operational capabilities of customer airlines.

In its initial phase, Fly 4 will collaborate with Enter Air and TUI. However, the airline has ambitions to establish itself as a leading ACMI service provider in Europe.

Headquartered in Ireland, the airline will commence its flights with four Boeing 737-800 aircraft, all of which were previously operated by TUI. According to a report by aeroTELEGRAPH , the wet lease carrier will begin its operations by conducting four flights for TUI from the UK. In terms of ownership, the Polish carrier Enter Air owns a 51% share of the airline, while TUI owns 49%.

Fly 4 is yet to receive its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC). According to a report by FlightGlobal , the carrier aims to achieve this in the first quarter of 2024. Commenting on the first ACMI customers, Fly4 managing director Jochen Schnadt said:

" We have essentially two anchor customers from day one. From the TUI perspective, we are initially focusing on serving the UK tour operator as a customer. Enter Air are obviously very busy out of Poland, which is their main base, but are doing multiple other things and it depends how they develop their own commercial partnerships where they might need some additional capacity going forward."

Airline Startups: The New Airlines Set To Launch In 2024

Ten aircraft by 2027.

While the primary goal is to expand its fleet to 20 aircraft, the carrier has already set ambitious plans to reach 10 Boeing 737s by 2027. The growth goals are set as Fly 4 will not be limited to flying exclusively for Enter Air and TUI.

The airline's explicit objective is to develop a third-party business. Ideally, Schnadt prefers to avoid involvement in ad hoc charter operations, opting instead for longer-term, multi-year agreements. This approach facilitates more strategic planning for employment contracts and fleet management.

Co-owner TUI Group currently has a total of 133 aircraft in its fleet at an average age of nine years, according to Planespotters.net . The fleet comprises 101 Boeing 737s, 19 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, nine Airbus A330s, three Embraer E2, and a single Boeing 767 aircraft. Meanwhile, Enter Air has 26 Boeing 737s in its fleet at an average age of 17.4 years, as per Planespotters.

Fly4 chief sees shareholders Enter Air and TUI giving new carrier flying start

By Graham Dunn 2024-01-05T10:12:00+00:00

Founding shareholders Enter Air and TUI enable Irish ACMI start-up Fly4 Airlines to begin services on the front foot, but the carrier’s managing director Jochen Schnadt is looking to long-term third-party customers to help it grow to a 20-plus aircraft-sized operation in the coming years

While launching an airline is never easy, the chief executive of new ACMI carrier Fly4 Airlines believes the support of shareholders Enter Air and TUI gives it a strategic headstart as it bids to establish itself as a provider of complementary capacity.

Polish charter carrier Enter Air and European travel giant TUI last year outlined plans to establish a new joint venture airline focused on providing wet- and damp-lease capacity. The partners sealed the joint venture – which is 51% owned by Enter Air and 49% by TUI – in November and the Ireland-headquartered carrier is set to launch flights this summer.

Jochen Schnadt, managing director Fly4 Airlines

”From our perspective, when you have two shareholders that are operators in their own right – and not insignificant ones – then there is a whole opportunity there to leverage expertise and scales that a normal start-up would not have,” Fly4 managing director Jochen Schnadt tells FlightGlobal. ”So launching on that basis, we can closely co-operate with the shareholders.”

Fly4 is initially starting with four Boeing 737-800s – which have been sourced from, and will fly for, TUI on UK-based flights. Schnadt says it hopes to secure its commercial licence and air operator’s certificate (AOC) this quarter and to start flying during the second quarter.

”We are phasing [the aircraft] in, but by late May we are hoping to have all four in operation,” he says.

Fly4 will initially begin services using four 737-800 on UK routes for 49% stakeholder TUI

”We have essentially two anchor customers from day one,” he says. ”From the TUI perspective, we are initially focusing on serving the UK tour operator as a customer. Enter Air are obviously very busy out of Poland, which is their main base, but are doing multiple other things and it depends how they develop their own commercial partnerships where they might need some additional capacity going forward.

However, the airline’s clear ambition is to develop additional third-party business. “So the question is then, in terms of moving beyond those two customers, who else is out there that we can provide services for?”

Schnadt has held senior leadership roles across carriers including BMIbaby, Monarch Airlines and Flybe – for whom he worked on the latter’s white label third-party flying programme.

“Complementary external capacity is nothing new in the industry and I think it has become quite mainstream,” he says. ”But I think what’s missing sometimes is that ’quality’ dynamic to it. We are talking about the state of the cabins, about on-time performance, about completion rates, the fundamentals which we as an operator can control.

Polish charter carrier Enter Air holds a 51% stake in Fly4 Airlines

“That’s where the drive really came from in terms of saying can we create a platform that can provide flexible capacity solutions at competitive rates but do it in such a way that it is actually focused on quality.”

While Schnadt says the airline will look at all wet-lease opportunities, it is putting a particular focus on longer-term, multi-year arrangements, which he believes will make it is easier to plan ahead, both in terms of its fleet development and the flexibility of contracts it can offer crew.

”You can be more picky, you can start looking at a more standardised fleet,” he says, “which is why we believe we have a path that allows us to be successful.”

“At the moment we are focused on the -800s and, coming back to the quality aspect, we want to standardise the fleet as much as possible, so we will have quite a specific focus on which kind of aircraft we build [the fleet with],” he says. Schnadt notes any move to newer Boeing Max technology would need revenues that justify the higher ownership costs.

“We obviously want to get to scale,” he adds. ”I think our initial benchmark is we want to get to 10 plus [aircraft] within the first three years and beyond that certainly 20 plus. The speed will be determined by a combination of things in terms of what’s happening with our anchor customers, but equally how successful are we to find other customers as well.”

While its relationship with TUI has enabled Fly4 to secure aircraft to launch despite industry-wide availability issues, shortages of another key resource – labour – remain a challenge.

”Everybody is hiring, everybody is recruiting,” Schnadt says. “As a start-up – coming back to the quality aspect – we have made it clear we going for experienced people only in phase one, before we then look at cadets.”

Fly4 in December teamed up with crew resource specialist AAP Aviation to support its recruitment drive.

Fly4 in December signed a partnership deal with recruitment specialist AAP Aviation

”For year one, we need to find ourselves a good set of experienced people to get going. Our hope is by doing what we are doing off the back of two customers that we have from day one, off the back of building the business model looking for longer-term partnerships with customers, we are therefore able to offer some lifestyle choices and they will potentially find us attractive,” he says.

While current aircraft shortages present challenges in scaling up an airline, it does mean demand for wet-lease capacity has arguably never been stronger – a situation which could persist for several years yet.

”That is clearly advantageous for us in terms of what we are looking to do,” Schnadt says, describing this as a tactical opportunity. But he also sees airline requirements for additional capacity driven by structural changes to demand in the post-Covid environment, with a shift from domestic business traffic to more seasonal leisure travel.

”There is virtually no carrier out there that is not looking at complementary capacity in one shape or form,” he says. ”So given where the industry is, I think we are seeing opportunities out there.

”The challenge is on us to make sure we deliver on this quality aspect,” Schnadt adds. ”But if we can do that, and I see no reason why we can’t with everything that is at our disposal, I genuinely believe there is a scalable opportunity out there.”

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Major Airports

Russia is a large country with many airports, and three of them are located within an hour of Moscow. When you arrive, you will likely land at Sheremetyevo International Airport, Domodedovo International Airport or Vnukovo International Airport. Sheremetyevo is about 35 minutes from downtown, and you can take the city bus to town for 28 to 70 rubles. Domodedovo is about 45 minutes from the city, and you can take a train, bus, shuttle or taxi to Moscow from this location. Vnukovo is about 30 minutes southwest of the downtown area. It is the third-busiest airport in the country and handles more than 9 million passengers annually. Board the Aeroexpress Train for the fastest service into the city.

Enjoying Moscow

The weather in Moscow varies greatly by season. Summer highs can soar into the upper 90s and hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter lows fall below freezing. April and October see pleasant temperatures in the 70s and 80s, so this is a great time to visit. Even the warmest months can have chilly evenings, so bring a sweater or jacket, even in the summer. Winter travelers will need to pack a heavy coat and plenty of warm clothing. St. Basil's Cathedral is one of the city's must-see attractions. This amazing structure was built for Ivan the Terrible in the 1500s and is regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Located in the city's center, Red Square is an ideal place to begin your exploration. From there, explore the Kremlin and other historic sights. Before you head home, stop by the Bolshoi Theatre and see the world-famous Russian ballet dancers perform.

Book Your Tickets

Save time and money with the help of Orbitz.com. You can find a wealth of information to help you plan a successful trip and cheap flights to Moscow. Moscow is an enchanting city with stunning views and breathtaking scenery. No matter when you visit, you are sure to enjoy everything this great city has to offer.

Moscow When to Go

June, July, and August are the most crowded months in Moscow, and getting into popular attractions like the Kremlin can be difficult. It’s worth braving the crowds, though, to see the golden domes, bright white bell tower, intricate Fabergé eggs, and the rest of the impressive complex. There are sure to be crowds in Red Square during the summer, too, but you can’t miss St. Basil’s fairytale-like Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the fanciful Kazan Cathedral, and the popular, upscale GUM shopping mall. Keep an eye on the forecast. Temperatures in summer reach into the 90s and it’s the rainiest period in Moscow.

Spring is shoulder season in Moscow, as well as a pretty time to visit. The flowers around the city come into bloom. To celebrate the end of a long winter, Maslenitsa, a religious and folk holiday, ushers in the new season with pancake feasts, traditional (and friendly!) fist fighting, bonfires, and other celebrations. Temperatures warm up to the 50s and 60s during the day, so enjoy a visit to one of Moscow’s many parks; there are almost 300 square feet of parks per person here. Kolomenskoye is a nice one, with a beautiful church that dates back to 1532.

Tourists are in shorter supply during the winter due to Moscow’s notorious cold, but if you enjoy a snowy landscape, pack some warm boots and go. The Russian Winter Festival at the end of December and beginning of January is a fun way to celebrate the best of the season—troika rides, ice hockey games, snowmen, and plenty of warm tea. Especially in winter, make use of the (heated) Metro public transit. Many of the underground stations feature art, including statues, stained glass windows, mosaics, and chandeliers.

I’m a Frequent Flier, and These 15 Things Helped Me Survive an 18-hour, Nonstop Flight in Economy — From $6

These comfy travel essentials made my seat in coach feel like first class.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Even the most frequent fliers, like myself, will tell you that flying is hard on the body. Between the altitude change, long periods of sitting in confined seats, and recycled plane air, a long-haul flight can leave your body feeling depleted of energy, sore, and dehydrated. Plus, flying for long periods of time also takes its toll on the mind. Even though I’ve been a travel writer for nearly 10 years (I fly so often that I have all of my major airport codes memorized), I still get anxiety — particularly when I know that I’ll be stuck on a plane long enough to watch “The Godfather” trilogy.

Fortunately, these types of flights have become more manageable thanks to my trusty long-haul flight packing list . Recently, I flew on Qantas’ new 16-hour nonstop flight from New York City to Auckland, and despite having business class tastes, I was on a coach budget. But, because I was intentional about what I packed in my carry-on , I was pretty comfortable from takeoff to touchdown. Armed with my arsenal of travel essentials , and my foolproof routine for using them, I almost looked forward to my return flight — the key word there is almost . So, whether your next long-haul flight is to New Zealand or Newfoundland, consider investing in these 15 travel writer-vetted items for a more comfortable experience in economy.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Neck Pillow

I upgraded my flimsy, unsupportive travel pillow to this dual-density memory foam game-changer years ago. Now, it has more than 4,800 five-star ratings and is so popular that 2,000 of them were sold last month, according to Amazon. I love that it comes with seat straps, so I can attach it to any headrest and don’t have to worry about it sliding to one side. The removable, washable cover is also handy, and there’s even a pocket where I can stash my earplugs (which I'll go into more detail about later). And like all of the best travel pillows , the Cabeau Evolution S3 comes with a carrying case and compresses down to be about half its size for easy packing.

Vouching for its comfort, one shopper wrote , “I just traveled to Israel and England this past month using this pillow and it allowed me to sleep an average of six hours on the four long-haul flights, which is the best I’ve ever been able to do in all my years of flying."

Anker USB-C Portable Charger

Not having a full charge on my devices stresses me out, and I hate relying on in-seat power stations on flights as, half of the time, they don't work (or the cabin crew won’t let you have your stuff plugged in during takeoff and landing). That’s why I always travel with Anker's best-selling power bank with nearly 5,500 five-star ratings. While the bank itself takes hours to fully charge, it can boost my iPhone 14 to 50 percent in about 45 minutes. And I only need to charge the power bank once every five days despite using it every day to charge my phone, smartwatch, GoPro 12, and Apple AirPods. It’s also compatible with Samsung devices and includes a USB-C port in addition to the USB-A port. A carrying case and cables are included.

“It worked great,” according to a reviewer , who relied on it for a 14-hour flight. Another traveler chimed in to add that it’s “perfect when you are on planes or in airports for 20 hours.”

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Facial Cleansing Towelette Singles

If you can’t shower on a plane, washing your face is the next best thing. Of course, the water from the taps in the lavatory doesn’t have a great reputation. For that reason, I travel with these tiny, pre-moistened cleansing towelette singles from Neutrogena. Despite being so gentle on the skin (i.e. no harsh astringents here), they remove makeup and even my mineral sunscreen, which can be hard to get off even with a full skincare routine and proper bathroom counter space). But don’t just take it from me. They have nearly 60,000 five-star ratings and more than 90,000 units were bought in the last month, making them no. 1 on Amazon’s list of makeup cleansing wipes best-sellers .

Is it cheaper to buy wipes in bulk? Yes. But as you can see from the following review , sometimes, singles are the best way to go: "They don’t dry out when they are individually wrapped and you can take as many as you need for the trip."

Crest Scope Mini Brushes-Disposable Toothbrushes With Toothpaste and Pick

It’s amazing how having a clean mouth can make you feel like a new person. But it can be hard to brush your teeth while you’re traveling. What’s great about these disposable toothbrushes is the fact that you don’t even need water, or toothpaste. The bristles feature liquid-like “beads” of Crest Scope. And despite being so compact, these toothbrushes also have built-in picks on the ends, which means that I’m not panicking if I run out of floss mid-flight.

Amazon notes that more than 4,000 of them were sold in the last month, and many of the 3,100-plus five-star ratings come from grateful travelers who spend a lot of time in the air. As a matter of fact, one shopper called them their “go-tos on long flights.”

Flex Flap Cell Phone Holder and Flexible Tablet Stand

While most long-haul flights have seatback screens, sometimes they don’t work or have the most recent season of “Yellowstone.” That’s why I like to download my favorite movies and shows on my phone. I’m starting to see more travelers do the same, and on my last flight, I noticed one with this handy phone holder/tablet stand. Designed by a flight attendant, the Flex Flap is a lightweight and compact way to prop up, display, and view your smartphone. When you need to mount your device, simply fold or hang the flap and adjust it until you get your desired height and angle. More than 4,000 of them were bought last month, and it has nearly 4,000 five-star ratings.

According to one traveler , “It can hold your phone or tablet horizontally or vertically… The stand is also very sturdy, so you don’t have to worry about your device falling over.”

Loop Quiet Ear Plugs for Noise Reduction

Most airlines give you disposable earplugs for overnight flights. The catch? They’re not the best quality (i.e. don’t expect them to drown out the wails of the crying baby two rows behind you). Instead, invest in these noise-reduction silicone earplugs. They come in six colors and include a carrying case, as well as customizable tips so you can fit them to your ears. Before balking at the $30 price tag, just know this: they’re reusable, and with more than 50,000 five-star ratings, they’re ranked no 1. on Amazon’s list of earplug best-sellers .

One traveler , who wrote that they’ve always struggled to find earplugs that “strike the right balance between comfort and effectiveness,” called them a “game-changer.”

SB Sox Compression Socks

Last year, when I flew 40 hours to the Maldives, I arrived in paradise with ankles and shins so swollen that I spent the first day scrolling on WebMD when I should have been snorkeling. Fortunately, it all could have been avoided had I worn compression socks . This particular pair not only increases your blood circulation, which prevents swelling and pain, but it also has cushioned heel and toe support to “provide unmatched comfort,” per the brand.

Taking to the review section, a frequent flier raved that these socks came recommended by their nurse friend: "Thankfully, this [pair] worked so perfectly on my recent trip to Australia and New Zealand. For my long-haul flights, my feet did not swell at all. I will never buy any other brand from now on."

Grace & Stella Under-eye Masks

These under-eye masks are described as "an energy drink for your eyes” by the brand. Meanwhile, one satisfied shopper , who wears them while “jet-setting around the globe,” called them “magic in a packet" as they get their tired under-eyes "refreshed and rejuvenated like I've had eight hours of sleep in just 20 minutes.” After reading that testimony, I wasted no time adding a pack to my carry-on for this long-haul flight.

They're easy to slip on right before you land and really wake up your under-eyes with their brightening, de-puffing, and hydrating blend of moisturizing hyaluronic acid, fine line-smoothing glycerin, and wrinkle-reducing sea moss, and strengthening amino acids.

Twelve South AirFly SE Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter Receiver

I don’t understand how we can send people to the moon, but airlines are still having us use headphones with cords. Hopefully, they hop aboard the wireless train soon, but until then, I’ll be using this Bluetooth transmitter to connect my AirPods to the in-seat entertainment console. I love not having to worry about getting tangled up in a cord or having it come unplugged when my seatmate gets up to use the loo. Not an Apple aficionado? No worries. This transmitter, which can last 20 hours between charges, works with most wireless headphones and earbuds.

“The Bluetooth connectivity to my AirPods didn’t skip a beat,” one traveler was happy to report, noting that they tested it on back-to-back long flights and determined that this product is “worth every penny."

Basic Concepts Airplane Foot Hammock

Admittedly, when airplane foot hammocks first came out, I thought that they were dorky. But these days? I’m a believer. Elevating my feet on a long flight not only makes me feel more comfortable, but it also helps minimize swelling. What’s great about this particular foot hammock is its versatility. It offers three different positions, and thanks to its extra-long adjustable strap, it even works for the tallest of NBA players, according to the brand (granted, they should probably be flying business class).

“I use this every time I go on long flights (like 20-hour long flights) and trust me, this makes economy so much more comfortable,” gushed a reviewer , who appreciated that it’s simple to set up and comes with a travel case.

Owala FreeSip Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Because airplane cabins circulate air pulled from the outside, where there’s very little moisture at cruising altitudes, it’s very important to stay hydrated. Otherwise, you can suffer from undesired symptoms like headaches, dry skin, scratchy throat, etc. Instead of waiting for the flight attendants to come around once every few hours with their drink cart, I pack a water bottle. I’m loyal to my Yeti Rambler ($40), but if that’s too pricey, consider this BPA-free top-seller from Owala with more than 33,000 five-star ratings. It’s also made with stainless steel and features double-wall insulation, so it keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours.

“I can always count on this bottle to keep my water refreshingly chilled,” one well-hydrated shopper said in their Amazon review. “I also appreciate the thoughtful design features of this bottle, such as the leak-proof lid and convenient carry handle.”

Gold Bond Healing Hand Cream

Speaking of dry skin, to keep my hands from cracking on long-haul flights (where I use a ton of hand sanitizer), I lather on this best-selling, dermatologist-recommended cream . Its fast-acting formula alleviates dryness quickly, and unlike other hand creams, it's non-greasy, so I don't have to worry about accidentally getting it on my clothes. What's more, its 3-ounce tube makes it TSA-approved for my carry-on. Though it's an M.V.P. for long-haul flights, the Gold Bond Healing Hand Cream is great to have handy on every point of my trip; from the hotel to the beach, and beyond.

“It lasts a long time, it doesn’t smell, and it keeps my hands soft,” summed up one traveler , who declared it their “favorite lotion.”

Amazon Kindle

In-flight magazines may be things of the past (I was a huge fan of Skymall, although I always browsed, never bought), but these days, e-readers are where it’s at when it comes to reading on long-haul flights. This 5.6-ounce Amazon Kindle is great for travel because it’s ultralightweight. And despite being incredibly compact (it's just slightly larger than my iPhone 14), with its 16 gigabytes of storage, it can hold thousands of books. Plus, it can go up to six weeks in between charges. The high resolution screen is crisp and clear, and the adjustable front light and dark mode means that you won’t have to turn on your overhead seat light and wake up your neighbor.

"It’s small enough to take anywhere," a shopper said . "It's fantastic for long flights and days lounging about."

Benefiber On The Go Prebiotic Fiber Supplement Powder Set

I have Crohn’s disease, so I have a very iffy digestive system. That said, even if your gut is healthy, long-haul flights — and traveling in general — can do a serious number on it. For that reason, I recommend stocking up on these single-serving prebiotic supplements, which were recommended to me by my gastroenterologist. Unlike most plane fare and junk food that I let myself indulge in while flying, these small packets (which I mix with any non-alcoholic beverage) are packed with fiber. Not only does this fiber increase your chances of having healthy bowel movements (and eliminating uncomfortable mid-flight bloating), it also encourages the growth of good gut bacteria.

“These are very convenient to maintain a fiber regiment while traveling,” wrote one Amazon shopper , who has already reordered them several times.

Lky Digital Sleep Mask for Side Sleepers 3-pack

According to the Sleep Foundation , “Light is the most important external factor affecting sleep.” Scientists agree that we get more sleep, and better quality sleep, in dark environments. While most airlines give you eye masks on long-haul flights, they leave a lot to be desired with their low-quality designs. Fortunately, this mask — which has more than 44,000 five-star ratings — blocks 100 percent of light and promises total darkness. Plus, it has an adjustable headband, so you don’t need to worry about it sliding to one side (a feature that side sleepers will appreciate). And thanks to the 3D-contoured fit, it doesn’t rest flat against your eyes and won’t ruin your mascara.

“These are great; they're light-blocking, lightweight, and super soft,” according to a traveler , who found that, unlike most masks that put pressure on the face, this one doesn’t leave their eyes feeling heavy and puffy when they wake up.

The only people left playing this game are the mythic sweatlords and the transmog hoarders. This game is never going to be what it was ever again because those players are all gone, replaced by collectors who don't care about gameplay as long as there's 1285 pairs of boots they can frolic across the map to find. The game sucks because the players suck and the devs are just placating the whales.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Plane Tickets?

N avigating the world of air travel can be daunting, with fluctuating prices and seemingly unpredictable deals. According to Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travel Outlook report, 94% of Americans are planning to travel as much as, if not more than, last year. And though airfares were down by 9.4% in December 2023 as compared with a year prior, according to NerdWallet’s Travel Price Index, travelers are always looking for ways to save money on airfare. They’re asking the age-old question: When is the best time to book a flight, whether for domestic travel or international getaways. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Why trust Reader’s Digest ? We’ve read through the latest studies from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Expedia, Hopper and more. We also go straight to the experts to find out the best time to buy anything in this case, that specifically means airline tickets. Keep reading to find out when to book a flight and when to take your trip to get a great deal in 2024, plus travel tips you won’t want to miss if you are traveling on a budget, like the best time to book a hotel .

What is the best day to buy plane tickets?

Research by Expedia shows the ideal day to book a flight is Sunday. For domestic flights, you can get the best airfare by booking at the end of the weekend. Doing so can save you around 6%. For international flights, the savings are nearly 13%.

In the past, you may have heard that the secret best time to buy plane tickets was Tuesday at midnight, but according to Hayley Berg, lead economist for travel deals app Hopper, that’s not always the case. “We found that this was only applicable to 1.6% of routes and yielded savings of 6%,” she says.

In your hunt for the best time to buy flights, you’re probably searching for the best time of year or the best month, week and even the best time of day to buy airline tickets. (Anything to save a little cash!) But travel deals tend to vary too much to pin down those specifics. “There are many factors that impact pricing, so there is no golden rule that applies to all flights, nor is there a specific time of day, week [or] month that is better to book, in general,” Berg says. “It all varies, depending on the route you’re flying, etc.” That means there isn’t one best time to book a flight during the dayand that it’s a myth that it’s cheapest to book flights at midnight.

How far in advance should you book flights?

New data from CheapAir’s recently released tenth annual Airfare Study, which analyzed 917 million flight prices in more than 8,000 markets across the United States, determined that the best day to buy flights is 42 days before departure. Keep in mind, the report does note that when booking airline tickets, there are many factors that impact how far in advance travelers should secure their flights. Seat location, flight experience, destination and price all determine when to purchase in order to receive the best deal.

Not quite ready to click “buy now”? Per Expedia, as long as you book 28 days in advance of your flight, you’ll save 24% compared with those who wait until the last minute.

For international trips , you’ll want to book up to 60 days in advance, according to Expedia. That may sound like cutting it close, but the company’s data shows that airfare peaks about four months from departure and waiting could save you around 10%.

What is the cheapest day to fly?

“For international trips, depart on a Thursday to save as much as 6%, or $60, per round trip ticket,” Berg says. “The day of the week that you actually travel can be a more predictable way to save.”

For domestic trips, Wednesday is the cheapest day of the week to fly, saving on average $102 per airline ticket compared with the most expensive day, Sunday, according to the CheapAir Airfare Study.

What is the cheapest month to fly?

Because they come after the holidays and most people are back to work, January and February are the cheapest months to fly.

Looking for the best time to buy tickets to Europe or other international locations? Book a summer trip. Expedia data shows that August is the cheapest warm-weather month to fly, with average ticket prices nearly 10% lower compared with July. Tickets are also cheaper in August than during the December rush.

When is the best time of day to travel?

Being a savvy traveler isn’t just about knowing how to find cheap flights. It’s also about choosing the flights that’ll make for the smoothest travel experience.

Early is the way to go, travel experts agree. Early-morning flights are typically less crowded, and they give you more opportunities to get on another flight during the day if your flight is delayed or canceled .

Avoid taking the last flight of the day whenever possible, especially during the winter travel months, to reduce the chances of missed connections or getting stuck for the night in the airport due to bad weather.

When is the worst time to fly?

The holidays are always going to be the busiest times to travel because everyone is trying to get somewhere to celebrate. Prices tend to be higher, but that’s not the only reason this is the worst time to fly. The holidays are jam-packed with travelers, and not just in the busiest airports in the world . On the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2023, the TSA screened 2.9 million people, which meant longer lines in many airports and travel hubs.

What is the best time to buy tickets for holiday travel?

While September is traditionally the best time to buy holiday airline tickets on the cheap, you’ll want to be sure to book them by mid-October. If you do decide to book them earlier, just make sure there will be no change fees if you find a lower price later on and want to switch your flight.

Why do flight prices fluctuate so much?

“Airfare is impacted by several factors, including jet fuel prices, seasonality and seat capacity,” explains Berg. “Large-scale events in a market can alter prices, but on a smaller level, the airfare you see when searching a flight can be impacted by what fare class is currently available on a given flight or how far out you are booking. These factors and more are constantly evolving, creating volatile pricing.”

How can you get the best deals?

Knowing the best time to buy flights is one way to travel on the cheap. Booking on a budget airline is another. But there are other steps you can take to save money on air travel.

1. Scour the best websites for cheap flights

There are a number of sites you can check for cheap flights, including these travel expert go-to’s:

Make sure you read the fine print, paying attention to any unexpected fees or restrictions, before booking. And keep in mind that airlines will always give priority to passengers who booked directly through them rather than through a third-party site. So weigh your actual savings against the possibility of what might happen if you have an issue with delays, cancellations or lost baggage.

2. Set alerts and do your research

“It’s going to be hard to find cheap flights these days, so your best strategy is to track your airfare for places you want to travel,” says national travel correspondent Dayvee Sutton. “My favorite site for that is Google Flights. Just put in your destination, set it and forget it. Now you don’t have to hunt every hour or every day for the flight you want. When there is a change in the price, Google will send you an email, and when you see a price that works for you, book the flight!”

Another tool: the price-tracking and predictions tool on the Expedia app, which notifies travelers when airfare moves up or down and predicts price trends based on historical data. You can also try the Hopper app, which will predict the best time to buy for your specific trip. That’s important, because the best time to buy flights largely depends on your route and dates.

3. Be flexible in price, destination and timing

“My No. 1 tip for getting travel deals is to be flexible,” says Sutton. “Travel is expensive right now, and the industry doesn’t predict it getting better anytime soon. So if we rethink our approach to traveling, we can still find some deals by booking what is on sale as opposed to a specific destination.”

Deborah Jourdan, a senior vice president with sightseeing app Go City, agrees. “Certain destinations, such as Las Vegas , have already surpassed pre-pandemic numbers in terms of Go City pass purchases,” she says. “People are eager to get back out there, and New York City , London , San Diego, Oahu and Paris are currently our most booked cities.”

Look at less-popular cities for better deals. While you’re at it, learn what is the Southwest Companion Pass and how it has helped many travelers fly for free.

4. Consider seasonality before booking

Most travelers book their summer vacations for peak May, June and July travel. Lower demand for late summer and early fall travel means you may be able to get lower airfare by traveling in September or October. In fact, according to Berg, you can save an average of $118 off domestic airfare if you wait and travel in late August or early September.

5. Browse incognito for flights

You’re innocently searching out the must-see places in the United States to take your kids and teens, when the price increases. Is Google tracking your searches and dishing up higher prices, knowing you’re eager to get away? And should you be clearing your browser’s cookies when looking for flights?

“The better strategy would be to search in incognito mode,” says Sutton. “The algorithms do, indeed, track your search, and this could affect the prices you are quoted. Although this is not always true, and I have seen the price remain the same for days after I’ve done an initial search, it can’t hurt.”

As Sutton acknowledges, the issue is a bit murky. While some travel experts put this trick into practice, others say there’s no evidence that searches affect ticket prices, maintaining that clearing cookies and using a private browser won’t help you find cheaper fares. Airline ticket prices, they say, fluctuate based on a whole bunch of factors, including demand. Still, if you’re really pinching pennies, there’s no harm in trying.

I fly 10 times a year. These 5 tech gadgets are lifesavers

1549928918804.jpg

As a tech journalist, I often travel across the US -- and sometimes out of it -- to attend product launch events, trade shows, and other briefings for news that readers care about. It certainly helps to be based in New York City, where most of the gadgetry madness tends to occur, but when I am out and about (for work or play), there's a bag full of tech that I always have with me.

My treasure trove of electronics has evolved over recent years, transitioning to newer GaN chargers and more capable yet still portable camera systems . The five picks below are among my current arsenal of travel tech. I'll make this a little more exciting for you by stating the obvious: My phone and a reliable Bluetooth tracker are always with me, so I've opted not to put them on this list. Instead, you'll find products I've personally tested that are useful enough for you to consider for your next adventure.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3

While smartphone cameras have become very capable at capturing life's moments, I still prefer the enhanced stabilization and portability of a dedicated pocket camera, especially when I'm recording smooth-panning videos of product demos and scenery. The camera I've most recently settled on is the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, famous for its ability to record up to 4K resolution through a one-inch CMOS sensor. The output I've gotten has been reliable and impressive, both for vertical and horizontal footage, which can be set by physically swiveling the touchscreen viewfinder.

Does carrying an additional camera feel unnecessary? Not when the quality is noticeably better and it greatly reduces the battery consumption you'd otherwise put on your phone when recording videos. Reddit users who have used the Osmo Pocket 3 seem to agree, with the added benefits being better audio recording, improved video stabilization, and a larger sensor for more dramatic shots.

Lenovo Go Wireless Power Bank 10,000mAh

Lenovo's power bank may look unassuming, but trust me when I say there's more to it than what meets the eye. Besides having a 10,000mAh capacity, meaning there's enough juice to power a phone (and other accessories like earbuds) two to three times, a fairly long USB-C cable is built into the battery pack, saving you the hassle of carrying a separate one.

Here's the second trick: the Lenovo Go can wirelessly charge Qi-supported devices when you place them on top of the accessory, allowing you to charge two devices at once (via wired and wireless) if you're feeling adventurous.

While the charge output is capped at 30W, many customers on Lenovo's website have found the power bank adequate for powering phones, tablets, and earbuds, and have been particularly satisfied with the built-in charging cable.

Ayaneo Flip

I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, but I've found traveling, especially when on long flights, to be the perfect opportunity to get my NBA 2K and Rocket League fix. Lately, my vehicle of choice for gaming has been the Ayaneo Flip, a Windows-powered handheld with Nintendo DS written all over it, from the dual touchscreen displays to the ergonomic shoulder triggers. Thanks to the OS and a capable AMD Ryzen 7 processor, I've been able to play Steam and Epic Games titles right on the device at medium to high graphic settings.

The big question mark with the Ayaneo Flip is its price point and availability, according to several interested Reddit users. With a starting price of $699, the Flip can best be justified by those who want a competent, on-the-go gaming handheld that can also be used for standard PC tasks like web browsing, streaming videos, and emailing. One of the Flip's most underrated features is the ability to output to a monitor or TV screen for a gaming experience more similar to standard consoles.

Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses

While the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses are fantastic for recording hands-free videos, I've found them more practical as a wearable tour guide. Thanks to recent Meta AI updates , the glasses can pull context from what's in front of you, whether it's a monument, statue, or restaurant storefront, and answer your most burning questions. I've used the smart glasses to identify unfamiliar landmarks, tell me the most popular food items at a local restaurant, play music from artists from the city that I've traveled to, and more.

The general sentiment toward the Meta Ray-Bans has been mostly positive, with Reddit users favoring the ease of use, comfort, and various capabilities. The price point of the glasses, starting at $299, is fairly competitive as well.

Review: Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: The best AI-powered AR glasses to buy right now

Nomad 130W Power Adapter

Besides carrying a portable battery pack, I also travel with Nomad's 130W Power Adapter, which fields multiple USB-C ports to charge up to three devices at once and a build quality that's shielded the rigors of my gadget-filled backpack. I'll admit: the charging brick is not light at 332 grams. However, at a similar size as Apple's MacBook charger, while being much more functional, the Nomad option has become a mainstay in my travel essentials.

Customers, including ZDNET's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, have expressed satisfaction with Nomad's 130W Power Adapter, appreciating the speedy power delivery and support for three USB-C inputs. I especially recommend this charging adapter for users with larger, more energy-hungry laptops like the MacBook Pro or Dell XPS. For smaller devices like the MacBook Air, which only requires a 65W charge, I'd advise picking up one of Nomad's slimmer adapters for less money.

Also: Nomad's 130W charger has one unique feature that's game-changing for me

Why should you trust me?

When I'm not writing about technology, I'm probably working overtime as my family's IT support guy. And when I'm not working at all, I'm likely watching, reading, or consuming some form of content about technology. So when I make product recommendations, I suggest gadgets I've personally tested and have proven to deliver the value (if not more value) that manufacturers promise.

My main expertise is mobile, from phones to wearables to accessories, which plays hand-in-hand with the topic of this story. I also travel about 10 times throughout the year, including from New York to California, so I've developed an understanding of which gadgets are essential and which are optional.

How do you pack electronics for traveling?

When traveling, storing any devices with lithium-ion batteries, such as laptops, tablets, and power banks, in your carry-on baggage is best. If my gadgets aren't already stored in a tech pouch or cushioned bag, I'll surround them with clothing to prevent any damage during travel.
