How to apply for Global Entry: Tips for first-timers

Caroline Tanner

As a reporter for TPG, I've written about Global Entry and other expedited security programs, including TSA PreCheck and Clear , which enable travelers to pass through the security and customs process at airports as quickly as possible. Although I've had TSA PreCheck since 2016, I delayed applying for Global Entry until this week.

Before joining TPG, I would travel abroad a few times per year. However, I didn't think Global Entry was necessary, as I only ever experienced extremely long wait times in the customs line when I lived in New York and routinely flew back to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) .

Waiting in a short line with the rest of the non-Global Entry users at other airports, namely Dulles International Airport (IAD) and O'Hare International Airport (ORD) , never seemed like too much of an inconvenience, even though I may have briefly felt annoyed in the moment. Of course, I was lucky as lines at those airports can get very long as well.

My perspective as a traveler has changed significantly since becoming a travel reporter. I've learned to travel smarter with tools like TSA PreCheck and Clear .

After having TSA PreCheck for six years and Clear for 10 months, I've seen firsthand how helpful these programs can be, so much so that I would never want to travel without them again.

Despite this, I had to travel without the help of either program in April, when I flew French bee to Paris-Orly Airport (ORY) from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) . Because I was flying internationally, I aimed to get to LAX three hours ahead of my flight, but that plan was derailed when it took my Uber driver 30 minutes to arrive. That, plus a 45-minute drive to the airport, resulted in me arriving at the airport behind schedule, and the cherry on top was realizing that French bee does not participate in TSA PreCheck and that there was no Clear lane at Terminal B. This led to me waiting in line, while sweating profusely, for almost an hour, concerned about missing my flight.

Even though I largely travel on airlines and at airports that have both programs, I always glance at the regular TSA security line and shake my head every time at the long line of people about to go through the hassle of taking off their shoes and removing their electronics and laptops to put on the conveyer belt, before saying silently to myself, "This is why you have TSA PreCheck and Clear." Particularly since I only travel with a carry-on, my backpack is always stuffed full, requiring me to take out all of my toiletries to get to my laptop.

The anxiety I no longer feel in knowing that I have both TSA PreCheck and Clear and therefore will not have to go through the stress (or sweat) of waiting in line, emptying my backpack or being concerned about missing my flight is priceless to me and puts me in a good mood from the start.

I suspect a similar sense of comfort will come from having Global Entry.

As more countries continue to welcome back visitors , I am traveling more internationally, including to Asia , which I'll be visiting for the first time this fall. Although I'm unsure whether I will be approved to use Global Entry by that time, I applied for the program so I can hopefully use it for the trip.

Here's what I've learned about the application process so far.

What is Global Entry, and how do you use it?

global entrada international tours

My increased international travel is what led me to apply for Global Entry, which gives preapproved, low-risk travelers expedited clearance upon arrival to the U.S. from abroad.

Rather than wait in the regular customs line with everyone else coming into the U.S., Global Entry members enter through automated kiosks at 53 airports .

Traditionally, users present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, sometimes place their fingers on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk will then print a receipt that Global Entry members give to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer before exiting the baggage claim area.

As of July, CBP has implemented facial biometric paperless kiosks for Global Entry lanes at 10 airports , meaning travelers will no longer receive a paper receipt but rather proceed to the verification stage after facial scanning.

Whether you enter via a Global Entry lane that is paperless or a traditional queue, you'll save time by eliminating the need to fill out some paperwork or wait in long lines, which is the last thing anyone wants to do after returning home from overseas. Global Entry can literally save you hours.

When should you apply for Global Entry?

global entrada international tours

As previously mentioned, I hope to use Global Entry for the first time later this year when I return to O'Hare from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) . CBP currently says Global Entry applications can take at least 90 days to process, so try to apply at least six months before your next international trip to avoid any issues with your application being processed before your departure date.

Although I am already a TSA PreCheck member , you don't need to apply for that Trusted Traveler Program if you're enrolling in Global Entry first, as it includes access to TSA PreCheck.

You can still apply for TSA PreCheck (which you'll typically be approved for three to five days after submitting your application, according to the Transportation Security Administration ) first if you don't have any international travel plans coming up but will be taking domestic flights in the next six months.

Know, though, that doing this will require paying both the $85 TSA PreCheck fee and the $100 Global Entry fee. You will not be reimbursed for TSA PreCheck after your Global Entry membership is approved (unless you have certain credit cards ).

What is the online application process like?

global entrada international tours

If you decide to apply, take comfort in the fact that the online application is very straightforward. Although it asks for a substantial amount of information, it's fairly easy to go through the process of submitting everything.

You'll be able to start, save and resume your application, so you can complete it in the way that works best for you. Just be sure to set aside at least 30 minutes if you want to complete the application all in one sitting.

To begin, head to ttp.dhs.gov and click on the "Get Started" button for the Global Entry application. Then, log in to your Trusted Traveler Program account. If you are applying for a TTP for the first time, you'll have to set up a new account.

After a few processing steps, start the nine-part application process by entering basic identifying information, including your full name (as it appears on your passport and driver's license), height and eye color.

From there, you'll need to verify that you are a U.S. citizen via your passport , along with your driver's license information. If you are planning on using Global Entry to drive into the U.S. via a land border, you would also register your vehicle at this point.

The application didn't take much time until steps five and six, which ask you to verify each address and job you've held since August 2017. Since I've had six residences and several jobs since then, these steps required a bit more effort on my part.

Fortunately, I've had to enter this information for other applications, including TSA PreCheck, so I had it stored in the Notes app on my phone. If this is your first time entering this information online, I would recommend compiling and saving it for future use.

global entrada international tours

Once you complete these steps, you'll need to then specify the countries you have traveled to since August 2017, excluding the U.S., Canada and Mexico . If you've frequently traveled outside of those countries since then, it may take a few minutes to remember them all. I turned to my Instagram as a starting point since I document most of my travels there.

After completing steps one through eight, you'll be asked to disclose information regarding your criminal background (if applicable) before reviewing your application. Although you may be eager to submit everything at this point, I recommend taking at least a few minutes to verify all of the information since any errors in your application could delay being approved.

All that's left to do for the online portion once you submit your application for review is to pay the $100 application fee.

If you hope to avoid paying the $100 fee, there are ways to cover the application fee without using cash. Nearly 50 credit cards , including some cobranded airline and hotel options, offer a $100 statement credit for Global Entry application fees. Usually, this credit is available to cardholders every four to five years, but check the terms for your specific card for the exact frequency.

What additional steps do you need to take?

global entrada international tours

After submitting your application, you'll be asked to complete an in-person interview. If you are conditionally approved, you may be able to complete this process when you return to the U.S. if arriving at an airport that participates in Enrollment on Arrival . Through this program, travelers can avoid a formal interview at an enrollment center to finalize their applications.

After submitting my application Monday morning, I was notified I had been conditionally approved Tuesday night via email.

global entrada international tours

When I attempted to schedule my interview online, I could not find any available appointments at either Chicago location or throughout the state, nor were appointments available in neighboring states, including in Detroit, Des Moines and Milwaukee. The first opening at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) was Nov. 9, which would not help with my trip in October.

global entrada international tours

Therefore, my best option is to plan on enrolling upon arriving at O'Hare when I return from Singapore in October, assuming my flight is not delayed.

If you too decide to do the Enrollment on Arrival program, be sure to verify that the airport participates in it and that it will be open during your arrival time. Don't forget to also bring an acceptable document showing proof of residency in addition to your passport when enrolling at an airport.

Should the Enrollment on Arrival program not work for you, you'll be required to schedule an interview at an enrollment center .

Bottom line

While the application process has been fairly straightforward so far, I'll be curious to see how the Enrollment on Arrival component goes.

Once approved, I should receive a physical Global Entry card within 10 business days by mail, though we'll see how accurate that time estimate is once I get to this step.

I'm excited to add this Trusted Traveler Program to my repertoire of travel essentials. There are some quirks to be aware of, such as the need to carry your Global Entry card with you in certain scenarios like pre-clearing customs abroad and crossing a land border, but the program's benefits more than justify enrollment, especially now, when airports are busier than ever.

Global Entry is an expedited screening program for people entering the U.S. from a foreign country. It essentially prescreens participants for major red flags and criminal history to judge whether or not they’d be a risk entering the U.S. from a foreign area.

In this article, we’re going to explore:

  • How to apply for Global Entry
  • How to use Global Entry properly
  • How TSA PreCheck relates to Global Entry
  • What not to do with Global Entry
  • What credit cards you can use to negate the Global Entry fee

Let’s take a look at several of the most popular questions surrounding Global Entry.

1. Does Global Entry Come With TSA PreCheck?

Yes, Global Entry does come with TSA PreCheck.   TSA PreCheck is an expedited form of security within the U.S., where members can keep their shoes on, electronics in their bags, and light jackets on their bodies.

This process usually allows participants to go through a standard metal detector and not a full-body scan machine. Just because you have TSA PreCheck doesn’t mean you’ll always get the perks of TSA PreCheck, however.

Members of the program are subject to random full scans where you’ll be sent to the regular security line and asked to remove your laptop, liquids, and shoes, so don’t always assume you’re going to have PreCheck perks when you arrive at the airport.

Bottom Line: Global Entry does come with TSA PreCheck, allowing expedited security screening within the U.S.

2. What Should I Expect During the Global Entry Interview?

The Global Entry interview is done at an enrollment center, which can be found at most major airports. Once you arrive, you’ll be checked in and will watch a video about the Global Entry program, what’s included, and what’s not.

Eventually, you’ll meet with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. This officer will review your paperwork to ensure everything is in order, and also ask you simple biographical questions to verify your identity and intentions surrounding using the program.

Also — probably the most important part — your fingerprints will be recorded and programmed into the system so when you use the Global Entry kiosk you can be easily identified. The whole process should take around 30 minutes.

3. What if I’m Having Trouble Making an Appointment Due to Waiting Times?

Scheduling a Global Entry interview can be tedious. Sometimes, appointments aren’t available for months , and I know several travelers who have personally had problems securing a confirmed appointment.

There are several things you can do to help expedite this process:

  • Check on the Global Entry website for cancellations or openings. People are constantly shifting their schedules and plans, so last-minute appointments certainly do open up. You can also try calling your local center to see if there are any last-minute openings.
  • Go to another nearby airport. For example, in the Washington, D.C. area, both Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) have interview appointments, so if you can’t find anything at one airport, consider driving to the next nearest one. There’s no restriction on which airport you can do your interview.
  • Consider making your appointment while you’re traveling. Let’s say there are no appointments in your home market of New York City, but you plan on traveling to Seattle in the coming weeks, and there’s an appointment there. You can make an appointment in Seattle and do your interview there.
  • Try out Enrollment on Arrival.  If you’re traveling internationally, you may be able to conduct your interview upon arrival back in the US. This option is only available for applicants who are conditionally approved and doesn’t require an appointment. Check out the list of eligible airports on the CBP website .

Hot Tip: If you’d like to be alerted of last-minute cancellations at your desired enrollment centers, consider a paid subscription to Appointment Scanner , a third-party service. You can set your notification preferences to alert you of last-minute interview cancellations and can designate the date limit.

4. Am I Guaranteed Not To Have Any Secondary Screening With Global Entry?

No. You’re always potentially subject to extra screening or questioning , even without declaring anything. This extra examination could include looking at your bags, asking about where you’re coming from, a search by a drug dog, or other precautionary measures.

Several years ago, I was stopped at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York upon coming back from a long weekend in Hong Kong (because that’s what crazy people with miles do, ya know?) and I was stopped by CBP officers upon showing my Global Entry receipt when trying to exit. I was told to step into a secondary area and waited while an officer searched all of my belongings, including my entire suitcase and backpack.

Each article of clothing was removed and searched. Eventually, a drug dog was brought over to sniff me and the luggage, but of course, nothing was found.

The entire process took around 15 minutes or so from start to finish and was extraordinarily thorough. For clarification, I was not declaring anything and didn’t mark “yes” to any of the questions on the Global Entry form itself, so I believe this was some sort of random check.

Bottom Line: You are never guaranteed not to have secondary screening when using Global Entry — so don’t think you can get away with anything.

5. Do I Need To Fill Out the Customs Declaration Form on My Flight?

You don’t, which is a cool benefit.

As a member of the Global Entry program, you are NOT required to fill out the customs declaration form , so as you see the flight attendant walking down the aisle with them, you don’t need to take one. You’ll answer all the questions found on the form at the Global Entry kiosk in the customs area.

6. What’s the Process for Using a Global Entry Kiosk?

As you approach the kiosk, your photo will be taken, which will then be printed on a receipt that you’ll show to the customs agent.

You then proceed to an exit point to present this receipt and passport to a CBP officer. Most times they’ll just wave you through, but occasionally they ask a confirmation question regarding your flight, countries you visited, or if you are bringing in any food.

Once you’re past this point, you can collect any checked baggage and then proceed out of the baggage hall.

8. Do I Need To Declare All Food?

YES. I emphasize this because it’s incredibly important, and I’ve seen many people get burned by ignoring this rule.

You have to declare any and all food you have on you — even if it’s a prepackaged snack. Most people think of “food” as fresh meat, produce, or vegetables, but forget about the bag of chips or cookies in their bag. Anything and everything has to be reported, no matter where you got it from or what you may deem safe or prepackaged.

Failure to report even the most minor of food items can result in your Global Entry membership being revoked, or in you being charged with a crime , so please make sure to tell the officer about anything you may have brought with you.

Bottom Line: ALWAYS declare all food you may have brought with you back into the country.

9. How Does Global Entry Compare to the Regular Customs Process?

Essentially the premise of Global Entry is an expedited screening for pre-vetted citizens . With your interview and background check, you’re essentially deemed to be an unthreatening person, not likely to bring in anything illegal, lie on any questionnaires, or try to circumvent the customs and border process in any way.

It’s by no means a guarantee — there are plenty of people who misuse the system every year — but based on the statistical analysis, folks who are part of the program are less likely to do anything illegal.

Back to the differences between the regular line and the Global Entry line: folks in the regular line have not been vetted. These passengers must fill out a customs declaration form on their inbound aircraft and physically speak with an officer at a booth upon entering the U.S.

This officer generally asks more probing questions to see why this person is entering the country and examines their form and passport. Because these individuals have not been pre-vetted, the officer needs to make a judgment on whether that person is a threat or not.

10. What Kind of Trouble Can I Get Into for Misusing Global Entry?

If you lie on any Global Entry questions when you come into the country, it’s almost near certain that your Global Entry will be revoked. Depending on the severity of what you bring in or fail to report, you may also be criminally prosecuted.

11. If I Have a Criminal History Can I Still Apply for Global Entry?

Yes, you can still apply for Global Entry with a criminal history.

Whether or not you are approved will depend on the crime, how much time has elapsed from it occurring, and what judgment was served.

There’s really no hard science to this, however, what is known is that people with previous misdemeanors and even higher crimes have still been accepted into the Global Entry program.

Your background application is reviewed along with the in-person interview, so if you do have some sort of criminal past, you need to fully disclose this without hiding anything. It’s not guaranteed you’ll get approved, but just because you have a criminal past doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be disqualified.

Bottom Line: Just because you have a criminal history does not mean your Global Entry application will be denied.

12. What Is TSA PreCheck and How Is It Different From Global Entry?

TSA PreCheck is actually a separate program from Global Entry, but because you’ve been through the rigorous background check of Global Entry, TSA PreCheck is automatically given to you without any additional fee .

Essentially, PreCheck is the domestic expedited screening membership and is only available within the U.S. Most airports within the U.S. have some sort of PreCheck lane, though smaller airports may not use a dedicated lane and instead ask you to present a card to the officer by the metal detector to signal your participation.

At those airports with a dedicated lane, you’ll scan your boarding pass like usual, and the reader will indicate your eligibility for PreCheck. Sometimes, you may be directed to the regular lane as a random security check, though in my experience, it doesn’t happen often.

As you proceed through the security process, you don’t need to take your shoes off and can leave your electronics and toiletry kit in your bag. You can even keep a light jacket on your person, but if it’s a heavy winter coat, it must come off. You’ll then proceed through a normal metal detector and not the full-body scan machine. It’s a much quicker security process.

13. Do I Need To Carry the Physical Global Entry Card With Me?

APC and Global Entry Kiosks Passengers

No, the card is not required to go through the Global Entry lanes — this information is embedded in your passport number. You can also go through PreCheck without this card. For the most part, this card doesn’t serve a day-to-day function.

That said, this card is a form of government ID , just like your passport or driver’s license. So, when you go through security, you can show your Global Entry card as proof of identity. You can also use it with any other service or company requiring a government ID.

Some jobs or services require multiple forms of ID — some federal — for you to partake in whatever application or service they’re offering. Along with your passport, your Global Entry card is a second form of valid identification.

14. What Is a Known Traveler Number?

Your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is basically your identifier in the program — it’s the number that carries your Global Entry and your TSA PreCheck. That number has to be on your reservation (PNR) for you to gain access to both Global Entry and PreCheck.

15. Which Airlines Participate in TSA PreCheck?

The following airlines are currently part of the TSA PreCheck program (this table is updated regularly):

16. What Is the NEXUS Program and How Does That Work With Global Entry?

Good question, because this can get a little complicated.

NEXUS is basically the Trusted Traveler Program for the U.S. and Canada, so when you enter Canada, you receive expedited entry, similar to using Global Entry when coming into the U.S.

Interestingly enough, NEXUS also gets you Global Entry, so you actually receive expedited border crossings on both ends of your journey to or from Canada.

That said, Global Entry does NOT get you benefits going into Canada , so NEXUS is actually a more-inclusive program. Chase credit cards that reimburse the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck generally include NEXUS as a third option for the reimbursable application fee.

In addition, because the program is a Trusted Traveler Program of the border between the U.S. and Canada, you can only enroll in cities near those ports of entry.

If you live in Miami, for example, it will be fairly difficult to enroll in NEXUS without flying up to a city in the northern part of the U.S.

Hot Tip:  We’ve got an entire piece dedicated to NEXUS if you want to learn more: NEXUS Trusted Traveler Program – Applying, Eligibility, Benefits & More .

17. What Is the SENTRI Program and How Does That Work With Global Entry?

SENTRI is the Trusted Traveler Program for the U.S. and Mexico. Similar to NEXUS, the program allows expedited entry to and from Mexico , helping you bypass customs lines.

SENTRI is even more limited in terms of where you can apply. You can only apply in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Like NEXUS, SENTRI is not reimbursed by any major credit card, so unless you frequent Mexico, it’s probably not the best membership — you’re better off sticking with the “free” (via reimbursement) Global Entry program.

18. What Happens if You’re in a Group or Traveling With Multiple People?

Here’s one of the (few) downsides of Global Entry.

If you’re coming off of a flight and are with family or other large group and not everyone has Global Entry, you must either (a) split up: you use the Global Entry lane and everyone else uses the regular lane, or (b) everyone uses the regular lane, and you receive no benefit as a Global Entry member.

In most situations like this, I recommend that those who are eligible use the Global Entry lanes and then wait for the rest of the group on the other side of customs and immigration. This way, you can collect your bags (and those of the others in your group) and take care of any necessary things beyond the border, such as checking in for onward flights.

19. What Is CLEAR and How Does That Relate to Global Entry and PreCheck?

CLEAR is an entirely separate screening service and is run by a private, third-party company. It is not related in any way to Global Entry. CLEAR members pay an annual fee to go through security without having to show an ID .

Basically, members walk up to a kiosk and scan their fingerprints or eyes as well as a boarding pass. Once the system correlates the 2, you’ll be authorized to proceed through security — which is generally just walking past the TSA agent without further verification.

If you have PreCheck you’ll be placed in the PreCheck line, and if you don’t, you’ll be placed in the regular line.

Bottom Line: CLEAR is a third-party service that’s not Global Entry and is not PreCheck.

20. How Long Does the Entire Global Entry Enrollment Process Take?

CBP advises that the entire Global Entry process will take about 4 to 6 months end-to-end.

The Global Entry application process follows these steps:

  • Fill out your application
  • Wait for the application to be approved
  • Schedule and complete an interview with Customs and Border Protection
  • Look for your Global Entry card in the mail (remember the physical card is not necessary for travel)

Bottom Line: Applying to Global Entry is not an overnight task — if you have an upcoming international trip, you want to make sure you apply and get approved with plenty of time to spare .

21. Does Global Entry Get You Expedited Service or Benefits on the Ground?

Aside from expedited screening in customs and immigration coming back into the U.S., there are no expedited ground handling or other services. For these, you would either need to pay a separate fee with your airline or have elite status with the carrier you’re flying on. It’s important to note that just because you have Global Entry doesn’t mean your bags will come out first on the carousel.

Global Entry can be a great way to speed through customs on your way into the U.S. and beat the lines. Since it comes as a perk of many premium credit cards , it’s a no-brainer to sign up. It also allows you to use TSA PreCheck screening when you leave the U.S., too. All around, it’s a great time saver and one that I’d highly recommend exploring if you travel more than a few times a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does global entry come with tsa precheck.

Yes, Global Entry does come with TSA PreCheck .  TSA PreCheck is an expedited form of security within the U.S., where members can keep their shoes on, electronics in their bags, and light jackets on their bodies.

How much does Global Entry cost?

Global entry costs $100 and is valid for 5 years. This fee is payable by credit card, and many cards will reimburse this fee !

Unfortunately, this application fee is nonrefundable — even if your application is denied.

How long does it take to get approved for a Global Entry pass?

The current processing time to get approved for Global Entry is 4 to 6 months (as of April 2023). Getting an appointment scheduled is typically the part that takes the longest, so check back frequently in case there have been cancellations.

Other options include looking at nearby airports or Enrollment on Arrival.

Is Global Entry still worth it?

If you are traveling internationally, Global Entry is absolutely worth it due to the time you’ll save upon arrival back into the U.S.

Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck, so if you travel domestically, you can save time each and every visit to the airport.

What is the difference between Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® and the other Trusted Traveler programs?

TSA PreCheck® and Global Entry are both Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Trusted Traveler Programs. TSA PreCheck® provides expedited security screening benefits for flights departing from U.S. Airports. Global Entry provides expedited U.S. customs screening for international air travelers when entering the United States. Global Entry members also receive TSA PreCheck® benefits as part of their membership.

Before you apply, we recommend that you review the various DHS trusted traveler programs, such as the TSA PreCheck® Application Program, Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI, to ensure you meet the eligibility requirements and determine the best program for you.  If you travel internationally four or more times a year, consider enrolling in Global Entry.  If you take less than four international trips a year, TSA PreCheck is a great choice for domestic travelers. The difference between Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

Does global entry include tsa precheck, how does tsa precheck work, global entry vs. tsa precheck cost, how to get global entry or tsa precheck for free, pros and cons of global entry, tsa precheck, important considerations for both programs, global entry application vs. tsa precheck, other trusted traveler programs for u.s. citizens, should i get global entry or tsa precheck.

Federal trusted traveler programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry let you go through special security lanes at the airport — which usually means faster and less intrusive screening.

There are costs associated with applying for either option — not to mention the time and effort to complete the required interviews. But some credit cards or frequent flyer programs will cover the cost of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. Even if you fly only occasionally, applying could be worth it, especially if you can get reimbursed with your credit card. ( Jump ahead to learn how that works, or just keep reading.)

Here’s our guide to both programs to help you choose the right expedited security program for you. Take a closer look at the pros and cons of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.

» Learn more: Cards with security screening benefits

Global Entry and TSA PreCheck differ in a few important ways:

TSA PreCheck speeds up security screenings for flights departing from U.S. airports. As the name suggests, it’s run by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, though it works with two enrollment partners. For first-timers, it costs $78 through Idemia or $85 through Telos for a five-year membership. To renew TSA PreCheck online, it costs $70 with both enrollment providers.

Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, plus faster U.S. customs screening for international travelers arriving at U.S. airports. It's run by a different agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Global Entry costs $100 for a five-year membership. While more comprehensive, the program has requirements that are more stringent and include a passport and an interview.

Here's Global Entry versus TSA PreCheck at a glance.

global entrada international tours

Yes, Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck benefits so you don’t need to sign up for both programs. Because of this, people with Global Entry are allowed to use dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes.

Many credit cards that cover TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fees will reimburse you for either program. Because the cost factor is eliminated, you might as well go for Global Entry because it includes TSA PreCheck benefits as well.

If you’re paying the application fees out of pocket, you might have to choose between the two programs. Global Entry is only $22 more at most, but the decision comes down to the convenience you want versus the hassle and cost to apply.

Consider Global Entry if you plan to travel abroad often and you live near or are traveling through a center for the required interview (more on that later).

The Global Entry renewal grace period has increased from six to 24 months for anyone who applies to renew before their current membership expires. Travelers arriving in the U.S. during this grace period don't need to show any special documents to use Global Entry.

If you don’t live near a Global Entry center, don’t have a passport and rarely travel abroad, TSA PreCheck is the better choice. Here's a closer look at the programs and some tips to help choose between them.

» Learn more: Global Entry travelers now have a 24-month renewal grace period

When you apply for TSA PreCheck, you'll have to pass a background check that verifies you as a low-risk traveler. Once you’re approved, the government will issue you a “ Known Traveler Number ,” or KTN, which you'll need to include when making airline reservations. If you add it to your airline frequent flyer account, your KTN will automatically be applied to all your reservations with that airline in the future.

Make sure you enter your Known Traveler Number when booking or checking in for a flight to get TSA PreCheck access.

When using a KTN, you’re very likely — but not guaranteed — to get PreCheck status for your flights. You’ll see a PreCheck indicator on your boarding pass, whether paper or electronic. Eligibility is also embedded in the bar code of the boarding pass.

PreCheck status gives you access to security lanes with lighter screening :

You can leave your belt and shoes on.

Your laptop can stay in its case.

You don’t have to take liquids and gels out of your carry-on.

Most of the time, that means a quicker line. As of April 2024, 99% of PreCheck passengers waited less than 10 minutes in line, according to the TSA.

The TSA recommends that travelers who fly three times a year or more apply for a program that gets them access to expedited lanes.

Global Entry: $100 (includes TSA PreCheck)

It costs $100 to apply, and the membership lasts for five years. Some credit cards and elite frequent flyer programs reimburse your application fee. This program refers to the Known Traveler Number as PASSID, but the number is used the same way.

Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck and its benefits but also gives you expedited U.S. customs screening when traveling internationally. Upon returning to the U.S., you can use an airport kiosk that should be far faster than traditional customs inspection lines.

Global Entry also includes expedited processing at land borders with Mexico and Canada. The TSA offers an FAQ for both programs .

TSA PreCheck: $78 or $85

The cost of TSA PreCheck depends on which enrollment provider you use. It costs $78 to enroll in TSA PreCheck at an Idemia enrollment center or $85 at a Telos enrollment center. There are more than 600 Idemia locations and only 26 Telos locations.

Not matter which enrollment provider you use, the membership lasts for five years. Some credit cards and elite frequent flyer programs reimburse your application fee. After the initial application fee, PreCheck renewal only costs $70 if completed online.

Some travel credit cards will help offset this cost as well. This program has one benefit: access to TSA PreCheck lanes. Those lanes are available at 200-plus airports and through 90-plus airlines .

A number of popular travel credit cards reimburse you for the application fee for Trusted Traveler Programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.

These are usually issued as flat-value statement credits that can be used once every few years (usually four years) to cover the cost of reapplication.

Here are some of our favorite cards that offer Global Entry and TSA PreCheck statement credits:

on Bank of America's website

Statement credit of up to $100 as reimbursement when you charge the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry to the card. Available once every 4 years.

Statement credit of up to $100 as reimbursement when you charge the application fee for TSA PreCheck, Global Entry or NEXUS to the card. Available once every 4 years.

If your credit card offers reimbursement for the application fee for programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you must pay the fee with the card. You cannot submit a claim for reimbursement if you paid with some other method. Reimbursement will usually appear as a statement credit in your account within two months.

Cards typically offer reimbursement of only one fee once every four to five years. Check the terms and conditions of your card for the specific rules that apply. Note also that these cards only reimburse the application fee for a trusted traveler program. They don't automatically enroll you in the program or guarantee that you'll be accepted by the program. You still have to apply and go through the required screening, which in the case of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry includes an in-person appointment.

» SEE the best credit cards that pay for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

For frequent travelers, Global Entry is probably preferable because it offers extra benefits when returning to the U.S. Even if you’re paying the application fee yourself, the added benefits of Global Entry cost just $22 extra at most, or $4.40 a year.

Also, you don’t have to be a U.S. citizen to get Global Entry. U.S. lawful permanent residents, Mexican nationals and citizens of Argentina, India, Colombia, United Kingdom, Germany, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan are eligible for membership.

The downside? Applying for Global Entry is more of a hassle than TSA PreCheck. Here’s why:

Passport: You must already have a valid passport to apply for Global Entry. Getting a passport comes with its own costs and paperwork. Learn more about Global Entry's specific eligibility requirements .

Interview: Both programs require you to visit an enrollment center for fingerprinting and an ID check. But Global Entry also requires an interview, and availability might be weeks or months away.

Enrollment locations: There are fewer places to apply for Global Entry — mostly at major airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection offices and some designated enrollment centers. By contrast, TSA PreCheck has far more enrollment locations — more than 600 nationwide as of April 2024. You can walk in during business hours or schedule an appointment.

For any trusted traveler program, a potential drawback is supplying information about yourself to the government, including fingerprints and a photo. Giving up that personal information is an individual decision.

Children ages 12 and younger can accompany an adult with TSA PreCheck or Global Entry through the quicker airport security lines without having their own PreCheck clearance. Children ages 13 to 17 can as well, but they must have the TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass.

Global Entry, however, doesn't allow children to go through expedited customs screening without their own enrollment in the program.

Nonrefundable fees

The application fees for both programs are nonrefundable, even if your application is denied.

Traveling with others

A practical consideration with speedier security and customs lanes is your traveling companions. If they don't have the same status, you may find yourself waiting for a while on the other side of the security screening area for your family or friends.

If you decide PreCheck or Global Entry is right for you, here are the online forms to get started:

Apply for PreCheck .

Apply for Global Entry .

These application sites guide you through the process, help you find an enrollment center and list the documents to bring.

Do you have an upcoming trip or long layover at an airport that offers Global Entry interviews? That could be an ideal time to schedule a walk up appointment interview without making a special trip to a far-flung enrollment center. Or at many airports, you could use Enrollment on Arrival when returning to the U.S. from an international trip to finish the interview without an appointment.

TSA PreCheck appointment process

After you submit your online application, you need to schedule an appointment to get your fingerprints and background check completed. According to TSA, the appointment should take about 10 minutes.

There are over 600 enrollment centers, and you can search for the center nearest you on the TSA website .

Global Entry appointment process

Once you’ve submitted your application for Global Entry, the CBP will process your application. For new applicants, the review process can be take four to six months. Once your application is conditionally approved, you will be notified that it's time to schedule an interview.

At this point, you can either schedule an interview at one of the enrollment centers or take advantage of the Enrollment on Arrival program. This program allows applicants who have been conditionally approved to walk-in to a Global Entry enrollment center once they arrive in the U.S. after an international flight and complete their interview before they leave the airport.

The majority of EoA centers are located within the U.S. However, there are also EoA centers at international airports (in Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, the Bahamas and UAE), but these locations may have limited hours.

For $50, or half the price of Global Entry, you'll get the equivalent of Global Entry privileges, along with Canada. The bad news: An interview is needed, and it must take place at a border-crossing facility.

So it makes sense to apply only if you live near the Canadian border or will be traveling through and can coordinate the interview with your travel plans. A NEXUS membership lasts for five years, and memberships for children under 18 years of age are free.

» Learn more: What is the NEXUS card and what is it worth it?

This border-crossing program with Mexico offers similar benefits to NEXUS, but costs $122.25 for five years. Enrollment centers are only on the U.S. southern border.

Clear is a prescreening program administered by a private company. It uses biometrics, such as fingerprint and iris scans, to confirm your identity at a kiosk. You must still go through physical security screenings at participating airports, but you can bypass the identification check and get straight to the conveyor belt and security scanners.

As of 2024, Clear is available at about 60 airports, stadiums and other venues nationwide. However, if you want Clear's airport security benefits, you need to finish the registration process at an airport location.

Clear now offers TSA PreCheck enrollment , and for a bundled, discounted price.

Clear doesn't qualify you for the light TSA PreCheck screening. You can use Clear and PreCheck together, though. Clear also lets you cut the security line at several stadiums, such as Major League Baseball parks.

This choice is considerably more expensive at $189 per year. (Remember, the government programs’ fees cover five years.) Delta Air Lines and United Airlines free and discounted memberships to frequent flyers.

Clear membership also comes with Preferred Plus status in Avis's loyalty program . Avis Preferred Plus status includes perks like:

A free, single-car class upgrade upon availability.

In most cases, Global Entry is a better choice, especially if you travel internationally. Not only does it include TSA PreCheck but it will also expedite your re-entry back into the U.S. when you arrive from abroad. If you’re paying out of pocket, Global Entry is only $22 more.

There are also many credit cards that reimburse the cost of either program, so you may already be able to apply for Global Entry for free essentially. However, Global Entry has fewer enrollment locations than TSA PreCheck does, so take into consideration the time and effort you might have to spend going to the interview.

Yes, Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck in addition to expediting your reentry to the U.S. from international destinations. Global Entry also offers faster processing when crossing the Mexican and Canadian borders.

Visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website to start your application. After being conditionally approved, you’ll need to schedule an in-person interview to complete your enrollment.

If you mostly travel domestically and want access to expedited security screening, TSA PreCheck may make sense for you. If you travel internationally and want access to faster customs screening upon reentry to the U.S., consider Global Entry, which includes TSA PreCheck, instead.

There are many travel credit cards that offer reimbursement for the Global Entry application fee as a cardmember benefit. If you pay for the application fee with these cards, you’ll get a credit back for the amount ($100).

Just like for Global Entry, many travel credit cards offer reimbursement for the TSA PreCheck application fee as a cardmember benefit. While you may get lucky and be randomly allowed to use the TSA PreCheck line, a more reliable option is paying for your application with one of these cards and using the credit.

Four Tours Designed To Teach Travelers About Climate Change

In 2022, there were 963 million international tourist arrivals worldwide.

That’s 963 million opportunities for the travel industry to be a positive influence and drive transformative change. More specifically, that’s 963 million chances to increase knowledge about the realities of the climate crisis in vivid and unforgettable ways and inspire dedication to protecting the planet and fighting for climate action.

If you spend any amount of time searching online for travel experiences designed to provide education specifically about climate change, there continues to be an underwhelming amount of information and options.

But at least a handful of thoughtful travel companies and tour operators in business today have begun crafting tours that integrate first-hand education or exposure to the environmental challenges unfolding worldwide as global temperatures warm and weather patterns the world over make dramatic shifts.

From journeys that bring travelers to Iceland to witness and learn first-hand about glaciers that are rapidly retreating in the face of warming temperatures to citizen science projects that allow travelers to participate in research and data collection about the changing planet, to itineraries that include traveling alongside educators, scientists, and individuals with Ph.D.s, here are some of the emerging ways travel companies are shining a light on the serious challenges facing the planet in an attempt to inspire climate action.

1.Earth Watch, Climate Change in the Mackenzie Mountains

Earthwatch offers an inspiring number of thoughtfully designed tours that delve deep into the climate crisis.  From the Climate Change at the Arctic’s Edge tour to the Climate Change: Sea to Trees at Acadia National Park trip, and Climate Change in the Mackenzie Mountains, Earth Watch provides a unique variety of ways to engage in thoughtful travels alongside scientists and Ph.D.s in order to learn more about our fragile planet. The company also offers tours focused on ocean health, and wildlife and ecosystems.

Its 11-day Mackenzie Mountains tour in particular, takes travelers to the majestic Mackenzie Mountains, a range that forms the border between Canada’s Northwest Territories and the Yukon. An area that’s on the front line of climate change, participants will use sophisticated equipment to collect data about permafrost and soil—work that helps reveal global-warming-related changes in the region. Additional activities include monitoring the status of the tree line, and record information on native plant species, says the company’s website.

There will also be time spent observing native mammals and birds in this striking and beautiful region. And here too, there’s a climate change-related purpose: travelers will record when and where animals are spotted and how many are observed. By helping researchers learn all they can about this fragile environment now, travelers will be helping to preserve it for the future, says the company’s website.

2.Global Family Travels,  Immerse in Iceland’s Dynamic Geology: A Transformative Adventure to Inspire Climate Change Action

A trailblazer when it comes to crafting trips designed to illuminate the challenges unfolding around the world, Global Family Travels offers an immersive, living science experience in Iceland.

The nine-night trip provides the opportunity to explore the beauty of Iceland’s landscape and learn about how climate change has impacted the country’s geography, how warming ocean temperatures are threatening some local wildlife and of course, take an up-close look at the heartbreaking retreat of glaciers.

“From beginning to end, this new trip to Iceland (which is appropriate for travelers from 8 to 80

years old) was created to educate participants about our changing climate and inspire them to

take up the cause, spreading the critical message about the need to protect this planet we call

home,” says Global Family Travels founder and CEO Jennifer Spatz.

Want to learn more? Read the company’s blog about the trip . There’s also an informational webinar that provides more details about this impactful itinerary.

“By the time you leave Iceland you will truly know the impacts of climate change, how to treat the environment in a sustainable way and hopefully have some ideas about what you personally can do to minimize your impact and help mitigate climate change,” says Spatz.

3.Intrepid Travel, Citizens Science Program, Antarctica

Like the other companies on this list, Intrepid Travel believes that “when people know better, they do better.” This includes how climate change is reshaping the world.

On its small-group Antarctica journeys, which range from 11- to 23-days, Intrepid invites travelers to take part in a unique Citizen Science program that allows for assisting researchers and science coordinators in collecting data and making observations.

“Citizen Science is a way to harness the power of thousands of travelers around the world to observe, record, and report on natural phenomena,” says the company’s website. “This is particularly useful in remote and isolated destinations like Antarctica, where it is challenging to support long-term academic observation teams. Scientific research in the Antarctic is often a costly, time-consuming and difficult task.”

In particular, Intrepid's Antarctica tours feature partnerships with NASA, Oxford University, Happy Whale and other research organizations, giving passengers the ability to track animal migration, observe weather patterns, and measure the health of phytoplankton (the tiny microscopic organisms that form the basis of the ocean’s entire food chain).

“Antarctica and the Southern Ocean play critical roles in the regulation of the Earth’s climate system and in many ways are the ‘canary in the coal mine’ of climate change,” the company’s website explains. “In the coming years, politicians and regulatory bodies will decide the fate of Antarctica and our scientists need all the information they can get to help inform this future policy.”

4.Natural Habitat Adventures, Climate Change & Our Wild World

It’s hardly an overstatement to say that our planet is warming at a dangerous pace, a reality that Natural Habitat Adventures points out is impacting ecosystems, habitats, wildlife and people.

“As lovers of nature, we feel acutely how much is at stake,” says the company’s website. “From the Amazon to the Arctic, as rain forests burn and sea ice melts, wild places are under duress. That’s why we believe it is critical to understand what is happening so we can influence our leaders to respond and alter our behaviors accordingly.”

With this in mind, Natural Habitat Adventures launched a special trip series called Climate Change & Our Wild World, which was crafted to bring travelers face-to-face with the how the warming climate is impacting the world. And, ideally, the trips “inspire hope and action on behalf of our planet.”

Trips included in this special series exploring the Amazon, East Greenland and even spending time with Canada’s polar bears—an animal whose plight has been particularly devastating as the sea ice that polar bears depend upon rapidly melts.

They also include traveling alongside World Wildlife Fund (WWF) experts who will provide information all along the way regarding the impacts of climate change on the wild places being visited. Trip participants will meet conservationists, researchers and other experts.

The Nat Hab trips, along with the others mentioned in this story, have been designed with this critical concept in mind:

“We only tend to advocate for issues we feel personally invested in. And there’s no more powerful way to spark that incentive than to experience these places for yourself."

Global workers' compensation case management, security assistance services, insurance administrative services, taylor swift eras tour inspiring international travel.

For many, the Taylor Swift Eras Tour isn't just a concert; it's an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, filled with nostalgia and excitement. By exploring ticket prices in different cities and considering the overall cost of travel, fans are finding that catching a performance in a distant location is more feasible and economical than expected.

For years, Taylor Swift has captivated music fans of all ages around the world with her iconic hits and ever-evolving style. For many, the Taylor Swift Eras Tour isn't just a concert; it's an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, filled with nostalgia and excitement. However, for many "Swifties," attending a show may be a bit of a financial stretch, especially if the tour misses their hometown. Surprisingly, though, traveling to a different city to attend could be more affordable than scoring tickets to a show closer to home.

Taylor Swift started her Eras Tour in March of 2023 with more than 150 shows scheduled in five different continents. According to online research company QuestionPro , the tour could generate about $5 billion for the U.S. economy by the end of 2024. On average, each concertgoer is spending $1,300 per show on hotels, outfits, and merchandise. Researchers at Skift estimate the tour has already generated $1.2 billion for the U.S. travel industry alone―accounting for flights, hotels, short-term rentals, transportation, dining, and other additional spending.

The beauty of the Eras Tour is the magic that Taylor Swift brings to the stage around the globe, allowing fans from different cities and countries to partake in triumphs of her musical career. While it may seem most sensible for Swifties to attend a show in a nearby city, it isn't always possible to score tickets for a show close to home. And, even if tickets are available in a city nearby, prices can fluctuate greatly based on location, venue size, and, of course, demand.

The difference in price is strikingly noticeable when looking at current ticket prices on StubHub. In the U.S., tickets are particularly expensive. Tickets start at $2,000 each for shows in Miami and Indianapolis, and fans will have to shell out $1,500 for the "cheapest" ticket in New Orleans. International shows can have more affordable ticket prices, starting at $300 each in Paris, $400 in Stockholm, and $350 in Madrid. While tickets to international shows may be less expensive, fans won't be missing out on Taylor's performance. Many of the international venues are much smaller than the venues in the U.S., so even "cheap" tickets can provide a closer seat and better view than a higher-priced ticket in the States.

By exploring ticket prices in different cities and considering the overall cost of travel, many fans are finding that catching a performance in a distant location is more feasible and economical than expected. For years, music fans have been "gig-tripping," combining a concert with a vacation, and the Eras Tour has been fueling this trend. Distance is no barrier as many Swifties are turning their one-night concert experience into a weeklong vacation.

While many fans worry that it's unrealistic to see Taylor perform live, by considering traveling abroad, they could make their Wildest Dream a reality.

Asheville ranks high on list of best flower festivals in the world

global entrada international tours

ASHEVILLE - One of the best places to stop and smell the flowers is in Asheville, according to international travel agency, Planet Cruise.

Biltmore Blooms, a flower festival at Biltmore Estate, ranked No. 8 worldwide, based on search volume, social media mentions and sentiment, number of observed flower species at peak month, and the average daily sun hours and monthly rainfall.

The No. 1 ranked flower festival is the Tulip Festival in Amsterdam in The Netherlands, which has 85 locations of colorful tulips across the city including in public gardens and museums.

Biltmore Blooms received the most positive social media sentiment score at 91%. in Planet Cruise's research study. There were 590 searches and 6,840 social mentions reported for the flower festival.

In May, the peak month for blooms, 908 flower species were observed, and an average of 9.3 sun hours daily and 93 millimeters of rainfall monthly was measured, according to Planet Cruise.

This season, Biltmore Estate’s “Spring at Biltmore” features thousands of flowers including daffodils and tulips, and orange, purple, yellow, red and white bulbs are in the Walled Garden.

According to the estate, its founder George Vanderbilt was “fond of tulips as they paid tribute to his Dutch heritage.”

Biltmore’s gardens shift and change daily but guests may check Biltmore Director of Horticulture Bill Quade's weekly bloom report , updated on the estate's website.

Inside Biltmore House, the estate’s floral team has created floral décor in the theme of “Spring Romance” and recreated a large wedding bell and floral bouquet display in the Tapestry Gallery as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the springtime wedding of Cornelia Vanderbilt ― daughter of Biltmore’s founders George and Edith Vanderbilt ― and John F.A. Cecil in April 1924. According to Biltmore, the design is based on the room’s 1924 decor for the couple’s wedding breakfast.

On April 15, Biltmore House tours will offer a new self-guided audio tour with new stories about the Vanderbilt family, recorded in English with versions in Spanish, French, German and Mandarin Chinese available later this spring.

Guests may request an American Sign Language and descriptive audio tour for the visually impaired.

In March, Biltmore premiered its new special art exhibition, “Chihuly at Biltmore,” featuring artworks by globally renowned artist Dale Chihuly, open through Jan. 5 at Amherst at Deerpark on the estate.

Application Process

  • Apply Online with CBP: Complete a TTP online application and pay the $100 non-refundable application fee.
  • Schedule an Interview: Once your application is reviewed, you will receive a message in your TTP account instructing you to schedule an interview at one of the Global Entry Enrollment Centers . Global Entry Enrollment Centers are primarily located within the United States at ports of entry and designated CBP facilities.
  • Interview Determines Your Eligibility: A U.S. Customs Border Protection officer will ask you questions, take your photo, and collect biometric information, for example, scan your fingerprints.
  • Provide Identification: Bring your valid passport(s) and one other form of identification, such as a driver's license or ID card to the interview. If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must present your permanent resident card.

Other Benefits
