Wilco residency filled with the familiar and the new in country-infused opener at the Riv

Jeff tweedy and company are in the midst of a three-night run at the north side club, promising a different set each night..

Hometown heroes Wilco launched their spring tour with the first of a three-night stand at the Riviera Theatre on Thursday. Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates will complete the series this weekend, with an enticement for devotees attending all three concerts: An entirely different show is promised each night.

The self-imposed restriction meant that audience members might not get a heavy dose of tracks from Wilco’s “Cruel Country” album on Thursday. The sprawling double album’s “I Am My Mother” was nonetheless a highlight early in the set, with imagery of migrants seeking better lives. On title track, Tweedy expressed a childlike love for his homeland without omitting wry reflection on its faults. “All you have to do is sing in the choir, set yourself on fire every once in a while,” he sang.

John Stirratt of Wilco performs at the Riviera Theatre on Thursday night in Chicago.

Multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone played a supple guitar solo straight from Laurel Canyon during the new “Bird Without a Tail / Base of My Skull,” while guitarist Nels Cline channeled the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn on 12-string electric guitar.

Despite Tweedy’s roots in alternative country, the experimental and evolving Wilco has long resisted categorization as a country band. Twenty-eight years following its debut album “A.M.,” Wilco embraced the format when playing material from “Cruel Country.” Drummer Glenn Kotche played a lively two-step beat for “A Lifetime to Find,” while Cline played weeping lap steel. Tweedy’s lyric imagined a conversation during a surprise visit by Death. “I can see you’ve done your best,” says the Grim Reaper as jolly music unfolds, adding that there’s no point in delay. “It’s too late for regrets; I am here to collect.”

Tweedy set a lighthearted tone by announcing that the band would present a golden “Best Behaved — Wilco Tour 2023” statuette to a member of the audience.

“There’s a lot at stake tonight,” said Tweedy. “More so for you than us.” The prize ultimately went to super fan Paul Suwan. “Paul’s been to more Wilco shows than there have been Wilco shows,” said Tweedy.

Weekend ticketholders can flood the band’s online request portal for chances to hear the disarming “Cruel Country” song “Falling Apart (Right Now),” which went unsung on Thursday. However, the band’s 12 albums provided plenty of strong material for the evening.

It was a lucky night for fans of 1996 sophomore album “Being There,” with six songs on the menu, including a soulful version of the lovesick “Say You Miss Me.” Wilco encored with hot versions of “I Got You (At the End of the Century)” and “Monday.” The latter was infused with an extra measure of Mott the Hoople-styled glam rock.

2004’s “A Ghost is Born” was also well-represented. John Stirratt’s loping bass propelled the breezy “Handshake Drugs,” which ignited when Cline threw licks like showers of electrical sparks. The jaunty “Hummingbird” earned one of the concert’s biggest audience singalongs. “Theologians” initially misfired, but the opening night snag became a treat.

Nels Cline and the rest of Wilco opened their three-night residency at the Riviera Theatre on Thursday.

The band then offered a glimpse into what a studio rehearsal might encompass. Tweedy conferred briefly with his bandmates before saying good-naturedly, “We’ll just try it again.” The rebooted song went without a hitch. “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” chestnut “Ashes of American Flags” followed, crowned by a transcendent jam.

The gentle and melancholy “She’s a Jar” was made all the more Dylanesque by Tweedy’s neck-mounted harmonica. “I can’t help but feel like you’re humoring me a little bit when you cheer for the harmonica,” said Tweedy in jest afterward. “It’s condescending. Four notes. Anyone can do it.”

Late in the main set, Tweedy paused to take a hand count of people who would be attending all three shows at the Riv. Noting that it wasn’t unanimous, Tweedy dryly asked why the band bothered learning three different sets. “Just between us, this is the only good set list,” he said, deadpan. “It’s really not looking good for the next couple of nights.”

Opening the show was youthful Chicago trio Horsegirl, who joined a cavernous post-punk and shoegaze sound with melody while performing material from 2022’s “Versions of Modern Performance.” Threads connecting to bands like Ride, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Pavement were evident in songs including “Anti-glory” and “Billy.”

World Within A Song

Whatever you call it, Jeff Tweedy’s 3rd book available now via Dutton. Order here!

When we asked Jeff about the book, he said:  “I want to talk about songs that gave me permission to be creative…to be myself. To say something that was hard to say. I’ll be telling stories from my life, focusing on a true-to-memory style of how it really felt to me, how I experienced things emotionally. And then I want to talk about music in the same way. I want to talk about music in a way that it rarely gets talked about. I want to talk about the world within the song.”

Don’t Let Me Down

C’mon america.

We know what you’re thinking. The answer is: No, Jeff doesn’t stop making music.

Which means you’re in luck, because there are two new tracks available now as part of Sub Pop’s Singles Club.

“C’mon America,” the A-side,  is from an unreleased group of songs with mostly sci-fi lyrics. Meanwhile “UR-60 Unsent,” the B-side, is a pitiful tale of an unsent lovesick mixtape, taken from a separate batch of unreleased songs with mostly pitiful lyrics.

Jeffrey Scot Tweedy is an American songwriter and musician originally from Illinois who is best known as the lead singer of the band Wilco.

Starting his musical days in the band Uncle Tulepo in 1987, Jeff gained experience touring and writing music whilst gaining a cult following on the alternative country music scene. However due to inter-band disputes, Uncle Tulepo ceased to exist in 1994 and all the original members parted ways. Later that year Tweedy formed a new band with John Stirratt, Max Johnston, and Ken Coomer called Wilco.

The band had a more alternative rock sound and quickly became a momentous success in the States. Despite not charting on initial release, their first record 'A.M' has now sold over 150,000 copies in the US. The eight albums they have released have all peaked higher than their predecessor, with 2009's self titled release remaining their highest chart position at #4 and 2002's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' remaining their best seller with over 600,000 units sold.

'A Ghost Is Born' is the band's most critically successful release. It won two Grammy awards; one for Best Alternative Music Album and one for Best Recording Package which was awarded to the art director. The album was also nominated for the prestigious Shortlist Music Prize in 2004. Jeff would often tour solo during his career mainly playing acoustic versions of Wilco songs along with some of his own material, in 2014 he announced he was working on a solo project entitled Tweedy with his son Spencer. An album entitled 'Sukierae' was released in September.

Live reviews

Jeff Tweedy has had a long and successful career in the music industry and he's still going. He is a songwriter, musician and record producer, but you may know him from being part of the band 'Wilco'. Although I think that Jeff has a lovely, mesmerising voice, he's not really my cup of tea. His live performance was lovely and had you wanting to sway along with your lighters in the air, but it wasn't a show that blew my socks off and left me thinking about it for weeks afterwards. You can't deny that he has talent, especially with a guitar. It's not surprising that he has been playing since he was 12 years old after getting injured in a bike accident that meant he couldn't leave the house for a while, so he turned to music. In 1994, Tweedy joined the band Wilco, which released 8 albums and had a lot of success. After a great run with the band, Jeff went onto work on his solo career by performing several solo tours, which was mostly acoustic compared to the music he played in bands in his past career. It was a nice change and he showed he can vary in his music widely, but although he may be right up some people's street with that soft and slow melodic style, it was quite boring for me. I have a lot of appreciation for what he does but I won't be in a hurry to see him again.

Very relaxed and talkative Jeff Tweedy at the Barbican last night. (3 February 2018)

Performing solo with acoustic guitar and harmonica, he opened with a powerful 1-2-3 of Via Chicago, I Am Going To Break Your Heart and Ashes Of American Flags.

This led into a set drawn from the repertoires of most of the bands he's been involved with through the years, with - obviously - a heavy emphasis on the Wilco songbook. All the interpretations went down well with the sold out crowd although it was a little strange hearing Impossible Germany without Nels Cline's solo.

Mr Tweedy even threw in a couple of new songs, the second of which expresses a wish for the world to be swept away in another flood. He turned this into a singalong.

The encore started with a truncated version of Remember The Mountain Bed and finished with A Shot In The Arm six songs and an impromptu Q&A later.

Slightly shorter than a Wilco set but he was doing all the lifting himself.

Set list here. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jeff-tweedy/2018/the-barbican-london-england-2bee802e.html

Jeff live is NOT a Wilco show. It is acoustic. It is very much solo. If you expected a Wilco show...well, wait til they go back on tour.

BUT, Jeff puts on a great show. The songs are so full of music that it's hard to believe it is one voice and one guitar. Yes, these are mostly back catalog songs: lots of Wilco songs with a few Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy, and maybe even a Loose Fur or Golden Smog number...but they are great.

Jeff doesn't banter a lot. He seems to want to get to the next song. But he is not uncomfortable in this setting. Instead, you get to see how the song really is crafted...and it is wonderful.

Now please don't go and talk about work or your new dog or just run your cell phone all night. Talk a break and enjoy a truly great performance.

Jeff Tweedy is a whiny bitch who cannot handle anyone in his crowd if they appear to be having any fun. He constantly berated, made fun of, and abused his own audience. Very bizarre. Maybe he's back on pills.

Jeff doesn't disappoint. A beautiful venue with a wonderful crowd. Jeff is a consummate musician, professional and a great entertainer. I'll take more of that any day of the week!

Third Eye Blind Concert Setlist Info

The Third Eye Blind song list expanded massively during 2023, when the band performed a series of intimate shows that saw the revival of live rarities like “London” from their 1997 self-titled debut and “Deep Inside of You” from its 1999 follow-up Blue . Meanwhile, the group’s road-tested cover of Joy Division’s “Disorder” was joined by unexpected takes on Beyoncé , Sinéad O’Connor and more.

Of course, 3EB still leaves room for the hits, including “Jumper,” “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Never Let You Go.” However, if their previous 2023 run is any sign, fans will likely need to stick around through the encore to hear all of the band’s most-anticipated singles.

Below, find an average Third Eye Blind setlist from their 2023 live show, and check back to see updated setlist information as soon as the 2024 Summer Gods Tour begins in June.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
