Former ISU president Dietz a finalist for interim presidency in Minnesota
Former Illinois State University president Larry Dietz is a finalist for an interim presidency at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota .
Dietz, who was president at ISU from 2014-2021, is one of two candidates being considered for the top job at a university beset by declining enrollment , a growing budget deficit and staff and programming cuts over the past year.
St. Cloud University’s current president, Robbyn Wacker, announced in November she would leave the position in June once her contract expires, opening up the position for interim leadership.
Dietz is the only candidate outside of Minnesota’s state university system who is in the running; the second finalist is Henry Morris , currently the senior diversity officer and the vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Morris has been with that institution since 1990, according to a news release.
Dietz retired from ISU in 2021, seven years after he was appointed to the presidency in 2014. His tenure oversaw the development of a new strategic plan, renovations of Bone Student Center, the opening of the Center for Civic Engagement and a Redbirds Rising fundraising campaign that continues annually.
Dietz is scheduled for an on-campus visit on Thursday, April 4, to meet with administrators, students and employees.
Chancellor Scott Olson, who oversees the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, is expected to make a recommendation to the system’s board of trustees during an April 17 meeting.
The person selected for St. Cloud University’s interim presidency is expected to start on July 1.

George Floyd scholarship accused of discriminating against non-Black students in federal complaint
The George Floyd Memorial Scholarship offered at North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is being accused of violating the Civil Rights Act, according to a federal complaint.
The Legal Insurrection Foundation filed the legal complaint Monday with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights. The conservative nonprofit says its mission is devoted to advancing free expression and academic freedom on campuses.
The foundation claims the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship is violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 , which "prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance."
To be eligible for the scholarship in question, the applicant must "be a student who is Black or African American, that is, a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa," according to the university.
Students who do not meet the prerequisite racial category are automatically ineligible for the scholarship.
"Discrimination against white applicants is just as unlawful as discrimination against black or other non-white applicants," complaint writers, civil rights attorney Ameer Benno and Cornell University law professor William Jacobson, said.
"Regardless of NCU's reasons for sponsoring and promoting the GFMS [scholarship], it is violating Title VI by doing so."
North Central University did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment.
The George Floyd Memorial Scholarship was created in 2020 "to contribute toward the educational promise of aspiring young black American leaders," according to a university news release .
The scholarship is still accepting applications for the 2024-25 academic school year, and the recipient will be selected by June.
Katherine Itoh is a news associate for NBC News.
Gophers add California quarterback Jackson Kollock to 2025 recruiting class
A fter dark on the west coast, California-based quarterback Jackson Kollock committed to the Gophers football program late Thursday night. Kollock, a three-star recruit, pledged to the U as he wrapped up a visit to Minnesota this week.
“I’m blessed to announce that I’m committed to the University of Minnesota!” Kollock said on X at 11:22 Minnesota time.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Laguna Beach had scholarship offers from Cal, Oregon State, Washington State, UNLV and others. He was committed to Washington this winter.
Kollock posted highlights that said he threw for 3,174 yards and 41 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games in 2023.
Kollock is the third commitment to Minnesota’s 2025 recruiting class, following Torin Pettaway, a defensive tackle from Middleton, Wis., and Zach Harden, a defensive back from Covington, Ga.
