Hawke Nature-Trek 20-60x80mm Spotting Scope Review

Hawke Optics has emerged as one of the leading manufacturers of spotting scopes in the entry level to enthusiast market. 

The Nature-Trek spotting scope is the mid-point of Hawke’s spotting scope range and with very few notable competitors it has the market almost entirely to itself.  Lets find out whether this scope is worthy of having this price point all to itself. 

The Nature-Trek spotting scope is typical of current Hawke design in being stylish yet functional. The build quality is generally good, although the material quality is a step down from the pricier Hawke Endurance ED 85mm .

The Nature-Trek is a lightweight scope for its size and this makes it easy to carry when attached to a tripod, especially with a Scopac tripod carrier . 

The action of the zoom function on the eyepiece, here giving a 20-60x magnification, is generally smooth and easy to operate. The twist up/down eyecup works well and gives enough eye relief for spectacle wearers. 

Focusing with the scope is easy but we would have preferred to see a dual coarse/fine focus system here to aid focusing when at higher magnifications. 

Overall the Nature-Trek has done well so far, but now faces its toughest test yet. 

Thankfully the optical quality is generally very pleasing to the eye. Lets start with the good. Up to around 45x magnification this is an excellent scope. The image is bright, crisp, and sharp with only mild drop offs in sharpness towards the edge of the field of view. 

The field of view at lower magnifications is excellent and there isn’t too much of that “tunnel” effect when zooming in. 

Colours are generally neutral with a slight warm or yellow appearance compared with true to life, but not so much that it is distracting. 

It isn’t perfect though, as you would expect at this price point, as there is a noticeable drop off in sharpness and brightness above 45x magnification. As mentioned this is not helped by the lack of a course/fine focus knob which results in a sharp image above 45x magnification being difficult to achieve. 

Overall though the optics on this spotting scope are what you would expect at this price point.

So, lets go back to the original point, is the Hawke Nature-Trek worthy of having the £300 (ish) price point almost entirely to itself. 

In short, yes. It is a very well made spotting scope with good optics. Yes there are flaws but when you consider that Hawke’s own Endurance ED 85mm is £799 it does make the Nature-Trek a bit of a bargain. 

Added to this is Hawke’s incredible lifetime, no fault warranty which really does add the cherry on top of this particular cake.

Hi All just a quick question due too the lack of reviews for this scope anywhere on the web. I am looking at buying a cheap but useful spotting scope to tide me over till I have saved enough money for a Swarovski scope. I am looking at the Hawke nature trek 20x60x80 2017 model for £249 has are they ok for the money and what are your thoughts on them?. I do not want to spend anymore then this so I can upgrade to the Swarovski quicker :t:. cheers stu

Hi, we really can't tell w/o having looked through it - and since it's rather new, chances are slim... Since the advertising doesn't tout ED glass (as with higher priced Hawke models), we can safely assume a fast achromat objective which will lead to a certain degradation of sharpness beyond 40 or 45x plus some color fringing. Field of view of the zoom EP is not too terrible with 36/1000m at 20x and 20/1000m at 60x - I have seen narrower zooms from expensive brands. The question is really if that fast achromat has a good figure - if yes, it can be a nice instrument although I would prefer a 30x wide EP for it which is unfortunately unavailable. If not, you hopefully have bought it someplace with a good return policy... On the other hand there is an angled Fieldscope ED50 with the MC2 zoom for 13-40x in the classifieds for 300 quid - that one will give great views for sure and in a very compact package - and you either can sell it without loss when you get the big swaro or keep it as a compact option.
