How to determine fork travel (Rock Shox Judy)

I picked up a couple old Judys and was wondering how to determine the amount of travel they have. One is a '95 XC, but with Hardbody carts and Judd springs and the other is a '95 or '96 FSX with Speed Springs (yellow). To my surprise, the XC has a longer A-C than the FSX does, perhaps due to the internals, which is why I'm here trying to figure out how much travel each of these forks has. Bonus questions: 1) How can I tell if my damper carts are working? 2) Are Speed Springs and Judd Springs the same thing? What weight limit is "yellow"? What weight limit is "silver" (Judd springs). 3) If my carts have circlips, does that mean they are rebuildable? Thanks!

to check travel with them together/intact you can unthread the springs from the top cap and measure how far it compresses. If you have them apart you can measure the amount the cartridge rod extends below the stanchion. You can also use this method (unthreading the top caps) to check if your dampers are damping. There isn't a lot of compression damping, but the rebound damping is noticable on a working cartridge. If you check your damper while apart and with them still in the stanchions, thread a bolt into the bottom to pull it back out as the rebound damping will make it a bit hard to pull it out when it's pushed all the way in. Hope that made sense. Speed springs and Judd springs are from two dif brands, but could very well be the same thing... Not sure what the colors mean. I have some NOS cartridges if interested.

I have Judy SL's from 1996 I think they have the same travel as the xc 60mm. The DH had 80mm. Wait found this, Rock Shox Museum 1995 sees the introduction of the Judy series of shocks. All Judy shocks feature larger 28mm uppers, biaxial wrap around brace and a new forged aluminum crown. All Judy shocks use an MCU spring with a hydraulic damping cartridge. The entry level Judy XC weighs 2.9 lb and gives 50mm of travel. The SL model uses some titanium hardware and aluminum steerer tube to drop the weight to 2.7 lb while increasing travel to 63mm. The DH model is aimed at the downhill market and can be configured for 63 or 75mm of travel while weighing in at 3.1 lb. (all weights are projected weights).

The most common travel lengths (63mm and 80mm) are pretty easy to distinguish visually without dissasembly, the 80mm (or long travel  ) is a longish fork, longer even I think than a modern F80 or SID (not 100% on that). Of course most of the better JUDYs can be travel adjusted by switching in different rods and dampers. The early plastic dampers cannot be serviced, and it's unlikely you'll see one in working condition unless it's NOS. the later leaky aluminum ones can be refilled but will just leak again (in my experience) If you are going to ride these forks I recommend a Risse GEM, you can still but them brand new, I have one in my '97 SL and I love the way the fork feels. Buy GEM cartridge here
Thanks for the input, guys. I'll have to take the legs off to get an accurate travel measurement... re: Risse gem carts...do you only need one, plus a dummy leg? Are they rebuildable if they start leaking?
Interesting [again]...I've had maybe 10 of these old used Judys/FSX'/SLs over my relatively short VRC collecting "career" and I've never seen one with only one side of internals. They all had dual dampers and either springs or Englund air carts in them. I haven't figured out if my carts are shot or not yet. I'll have to try your check above to determine that.
The only Judy (and I'm talking about 95-98 models) that had dual dampers was the red DH model. The FSX version also only had one damper. Of course you could put two cartridges in if you wanted, and that would be a better option when running coil springs since the elastomers they came with did have some inherent damping qualities to them. By '98 I think they had the type II spring kit which was roughly half coil and half elastomer if I recall correctly.
Yup, type 2 did away with the awful 'Jax' system and used a 2" coil spring and a single elastomer in each leg for a more progressive feel. I was under the impression that only the DH models had twin dampers, a second damper might be good with all-coil springs, but would add further weight to an already weighty conversion, unless you can find those lovely titanium speed springs of course.

Judy SHaft Lengths Bry, If you tear the forks down to clean & lube them here is the info from my "unofficial cheat sheet" for cartridge shaft length: 186 mm. = 50 mm.travel 200 mm. = 60 mm travel 223 mm. = 72 mm. travel 226 mm. = 80 mm. travel I don't have the measurement for the 63 mm. cartridge length but you can make a rough guess from the above information. I know the early SID axle to crown is (434mm. for 63 mm.) of travel and (451 mm.for 80 mm.) of travel, you can use that to get a quick estimate too. I have N.O.S. seals and a few cartridges... PM me if you need anything or help... -John Y.
You guys were right. I only have one damper in each leg. I guess I hadn't ever really bothered to pull out what I thought were the dampers (didn't have the right tool to remove the cir clips before). Anyway, pulled them out tonight and the right legs were dummy legs! I also confirmed that one of my dampers seems to be working as there is a noticeable amount of resistance when trying to extend it back out. My other fork wasn't so lucky; it's totally loose. Thing is, once they were back together, I couldn't feel any difference between the two forks as far as the damping was concerned. I also measured the stanchions as well as the exposed pistons of the dampers. Of course I should have written this down, but off the top of my head, the shorter A-C FSX was about 50mm travel and the XC was about 60mm. I can't remember exactly what the pistons measured at, but it was a bit more than what I got from the stanchion measurement method. Based on this, I think I can surmise that my FSX is a 50mm fork and the XC is a 63mm.

Blast from the past: RockShox Judy returns!
RockShox brings back the iconic name
Russell Eich
![rockshox judy max travel rockshox judy max travel](https://c02.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/39/2019/03/rs_judy_gold_rl_17-1490130468032-vboit0xguuu3-5256b39.jpg?webp=1&w=1200)
Who can remember the ’90s? If you were a mountain biker back then, chances are you either had or desperately wanted a RockShox Judy on the front of your bike.
Well if you missed out on the Judy goodness back then, you now have a second chance — minus the horrid elastomer part.
- Best trail/enduro forks
RockShox just reintroduced the Judy name with an all-new fork chassis utilizing knowledge gained from its exceptional Pike forks. The new Judy's goal is to outfit entry-level bikes with the light and stiff performance of the Pike.
The two new Judy forks are Boost, which means room for Plus tires (up to 2.8in in both the 27.5 and 29in models), while Torque Cap compatibility adds additional stiffness and steering precision. Torque Caps refer to SRAM's increased hub/fork dropout interface which is said to enhance steering through a stronger, stiffer connection.
Judy Gold RL
The higher-end Judy is the Gold RL. It features Motion Control RL damping, OneLoc remote compatibility and Fast Black upper tubes for that unmistakable RockShox look and performance.
- Travel: 80, 100, 120mm
- Damping: Motion Control RL

Judy Silver TK
The Judy Silver TK fork rolls on the same chassis and associated travel and tire clearance, but cuts the price with the less expensive TurnKey damper with lockout. RockShox's time-tested SoloAir spring is still on board, and there's a standard satin nickel finish on the steel uppers.
While not available aftermarket, the Judy Silver TK will be showing up on complete bikes later in 2017.

Suspension Forks Sizing
Compatibility, setting sag.
A new suspension fork is one of the most noticeable and worthy upgrades you can make to your mountain bike. A higher quality fork will be able to deal with more difficult terrain, remaining composed on the trail and keeping your wheel in contact with the ground. This gives more grip, and therefore a more confidence inspiring ride.
Not all forks are made equal, there are some very important size and compatibility aspects to look at first.
There are a few different wheel sizes for mountain bikes. 26”, 27.5” (650b) and 29” are the most common.
There is also plus (+) and fat versions available. If you are not sure it should be written on the side of the tyre.
Whatever wheel size you have, the fork must be designed to suit.
Fork steerer
The fork steerer is attached to the fork crown, this comes up through the frame and headset to be clamped at the top by the stem.
Most modern bikes will have a tapered steerer, this is 1.5” inch wide at the fork and 1 1/8th inch at the stem. Some DH bikes and older mountain bikes will suit a straight 1 1/8th inch steerer.
It is easiest and best if the replacement fork has the same diameter steerer to fit into your frame and headset.
If you are unsure on the size, drop the forks out from the frame and you should be able to see straight away if the steerer is tapered or straight.
![rockshox judy max travel Tapered Steerer](https://tredz.azureedge.net/assets/images/userpages/content-images/guides-reviews/buyers-guides/component-guides/suspension-forks/tapered-steerer-v2.jpg)
If you are planning on using the same front wheel with your new fork, the fork’s dropouts must suit your wheel.
The width of the front hub has traditionally been 100mm, with either a 9 or 15mm axle. With a 9mm Quick Release (QR), a fork could be described as 9mm x100mm or QR to fit. A larger 15mm bolt through axle is more common on higher end bikes, a fork could be described as 15 x 100 to suit. This 15mm axle can be a quick release style and can be referred to as 15QR
Over the last few years, a wider 110mm spacing known as “Boost” has become the new standard, this is not available for 9mm QR axles and would be shown as 15mm x 110 or 15mm Boost.
20mm axles have been common on DH bikes for some time. Although DH wheels will be 110mm wide, they are not always “Boost”. There is a new DH Boost for front wheels and forks, this means the hub is still 110mm wide, but the disc rotor/mount sits 5mm out.
The amount of distance the fork can move vertically is referred to as travel (shown in mm). The frame manufacturer will have designed the bike around a certain amount of travel. The general rule is to stay with this. Increasing or decreasing the fork travel can result in the geometry being severely compromised, making the bike handle worse than intended and putting more stress on the headtube structure.
*Changing fork travel can void frame warranty from the manufacturer, please check with the manufacturer before any travel increase/decrease.
As fork travel increases so can flex, to combat this a triple clamp design is used for forks with over 180mm of travel. The hub plus the two crowns creates a triple clamp. The forks are for DH use.
![rockshox judy max travel A triple clamp DH fork, travel is measured from the lower crown to the top of the fork lower legs](https://tredz.azureedge.net/assets/images/userpages/content-images/guides-reviews/buyers-guides/component-guides/suspension-forks/suspension-fork-travel-v2.jpg)
Offset/Rake
The distance the axle is offset from the steering axis. This directly affects the “Trail”. Trail is the distance between the contact point of the tyre and where the steering axis hits the floor. The shorter the offset the longer the trail and vice versa. Wheelsize also affects trail. Larger wheels have a longer trail. With the popularity of 29er MTB’s, there is often an offset choice to be made.
The most common offset for a 29er fork is 51mm, however, fork manufacturers offer shorter offsets to increase trail.
![rockshox judy max travel fork offset and rake](https://tredz.azureedge.net/assets/images/userpages/content-images/guides-reviews/buyers-guides/component-guides/suspension-forks/offset-and-rake-v2.jpg)
Once the correct fork has been chosen there are a few things you should know before fitting.
Crown race – Slid down over the steerer is the crown race, these are usually particular to the headset on your bike. They create a seat for the lower bearings of the headset to sit on, this should be removed from your forks and slid into place on the new fork steerer before installing the new forks.
Star Nut – Inside the steerer tube there is a star nut. This has a wedge design allowing it to be slid down into place but not slid back up. There is an internal thread that takes the top cap bolt allowing the forks to be held in place and allowing adjustment of the pressure on the bearings.
Steerer length – A new fork will have a long uncut steerer, this will more than likely need to be cut to match the length of your original forks, however, it can be cut longer or shorter if you wanted to have more adjustment for stem height.
