Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. - Georgia Tech senior golfer Ross Steelman has debuted at No. 13 in the pre-season PGA Tour University Velocity Global Ranking, announced Wednesday.

Steelman, a native of Columbia, Mo., currently ranked No. 27 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, finished second in stroke play at the North & South Amateur and also tied for 11 th place at the Sunnehanna Amateur earlier this summer. The 6-foot-5 senior is preparing to play in the upcoming Western Amateur, Aug. 1-6 in Highland Park, Ill., and the U.S. Amateur, Aug. 15-21 in Paramus, N.J.

In his first year as a Yellow Jacket following his transfer from Missouri, Steelman logged six top-10 finishes in 11 events in 2021-22, including a runner-up finish at the NCAA Columbus Regional and a solo sixth-place performance at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. He finished the spring ranked No. 141 nationally in the Golfstat rankings and No. 114 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index.

Eligible players in the Class of 2023 must enroll with PGA TOUR University in order to be included in the regular season Velocity Global Ranking. Player Registration is open , and the complete Class of 2023 Ranking will be released prior to the start of the fall season in late August.

In partnership with the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®), PGA TOUR University ranks collegiate players based on their average performance in NCAA Division-I men's team competitions, official PGA TOUR tournaments and select DP World Tour events. At the end of the college golf season, the top five finishers will earn membership on Korn Ferry Tour and players finishing 6th through 15th will earn membership on PGA TOUR Canada or PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

Since the first PGA TOUR University class graduated in June 2021, alumni have combined for five professional victories. Less than a month after finishing No. 1 in the 2022 Velocity Global Ranking, Pierceson Coody won in just his third start on Korn Ferry Tour in June and is currently 32nd on the points list. Trevor Werbylo (9th, Class of 2021) and Davis Thompson (2nd, Class of 2021) also have Korn Ferry Tour victories this season, and both players have secured their PGA TOUR cards for the 2022-23 season through their play on Korn Ferry Tour.

Georgia Tech's golf team has completed 27 years under head coach Bruce Heppler, winning 70 tournaments in his tenure. The Yellow Jackets have won 18 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, made 31 appearances in the NCAA Championship and been the national runner-up four times. Georgia tech transfer ross steelman leads dogwood invite with a 62 that's still five short of course record, share this article.

ross steelman pga tour

At Perche Creek Golf Club, a par-3 course in Columbia, Missouri, every green looked to Ross Steelman to be roughly 10 feet wide and 10 feet deep. Play a place like that over and over again, and you tend to develop a laser precision on approach shots.

“I played the par 3 millions and millions of times a day,” Steelman said. “That’s kind of where I got started playing golf.”

In Atlanta, Druid Hills Golf Course – a hilly little gem tucked into a downtown neighborhood – is what Steelman calls a driver-wedge kind of place. He’s still trying to decide if he would describe the historic layout as short or not. Mostly he’s just enjoying it as a fun track.

“Lot of getable par 4s and par 5s are good to score on as well,” he said. “Par 3s, you just kind of have to muster up some courage and hit some good shots.”

Leaderboard : Dogwood Invitational

The Missouri kid handled it well on Wednesday in the opening round of the Dogwood Invitational, the unofficial opener to the summer amateur golf season. Steelman’s bogey-free 62 included two eagles and rocketed him to the top of the leaderboard by four shots.

Steelman’s eagles came at Nos. 7 and 9, the two par 5s on the front side. He hit 5-iron into both greens and made a putt of roughly 30 feet to jumpstart his day. Shockingly, his 62 is still five shots short of the Druid Hills course record after Alex Ross posted a 57 at the 2019 Dogwood.

Asked if he was aware of the record, Steelman responded that it’s common knowledge this week.

Still, a caddie for another player in the group asked Steelman on the 18th tee if he could get the course record with a 2 on that closing par 5.

“If I make a 2 and shoot 13 (under),” Steelman replied, “I’ll be two off the course record. We all got a pretty good laugh at that.”

This week marks Steelman’s debut at the Dogwood. Later this month, he’ll compete in the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island. Both are key events on the summer amateur circuit. Steelman is enjoying the opportunity after spending previous summers out with injury. He broke his left wrist before his senior year of high school when he hit down on a tree root that was hidden underground.

When he graduated early from Rockbridge High School in Columbia, Missouri, and started at Mizzou in January of 2019, he reaggravated the injury. In some ways, the COVID break was a blessing because it allowed him time to actually heal.

After two years on the Missouri roster (including a redshirt year), Steelman has transferred to Georgia Tech for next season. He’ll head back to Atlanta, his new home city, to begin summer classes in late June.

“I’m fired up,” Steelman said of the transfer. “I’m really excited to be able to join such a great program. Coach (Bruce) Heppler is the best in the business and everybody on the team that I’ve met here are really great guys and we’ve all got very similar goals in mind as a team and individually.”

A move south offers the Midwesterner more opportunities to grow his game in the winter months, too.

Most recently, Steelman narrowly missed advancing as an individual to the NCAA Championship. His Missouri team was on the bubble for an NCAA Regional pick, but Steelman was chosen for the postseason as an individual. Oddly, two other individuals advanced out of the Noblesville (Indiana) Regional ahead of him, so even though he was third individually, he was one spot short. That scenario almost never happens.

Missouri spent the season competing primarily within the SEC Conference and Steelman thinks he benefited from a loaded schedule even if the season didn’t quite end as he’d hoped.

“For confidence, it’s huge,” he said. At No. 156 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Steelman is ranked as high as he’s ever been.

Outside of the wrist injury, Steelman has felt his putting has held him back recently. Back home in Columbia, he buckled down on short game with his longtime coach Jake Poe. Poe has known this level and beyond having competed at Stanford with Tiger Woods as a walk-on in 1994, and even rooming with the golf legend.

“He went into the coaching and business world and left the golf for Tiger and he’s been great to work with,” he said. “I’ve worked with him my entire life. He’s the first swing coach and the only swing coach I’ve ever had.”

The perfect voice, it seems, as Steelman eyes the next level.

Three-peat transfer ross steelman looks to continue georgia tech’s u.s. amateur run.

Steelman

OAKMONT, Pa. – Georgia Tech head coach Bruce Heppler was closely monitoring the situation at Oakmont Country Club from back in Atlanta. His incoming transfer Ross Steelman had won again, and Heppler was one more Steelman victory from booking a plane ticket.

For Heppler, it’s a familiar feeling. He has coached three previous U.S. Amateur champions: Matt Kuchar, back in 1997, and then each of the past two Havemeyer Trophy winners, Andy Ogletree and Tyler Strafaci.

“I’ll take all this déjà vu I can get,” Heppler said. “It’s really cool stuff.”

The Yellow Jackets’ three-peat is still alive thanks to Steelman, fresh off a stellar sophomore season at Missouri, advancing to Friday afternoon’s quarterfinals with a 3-and-2 victory over Florida junior Ricky Castillo, a former Phil Mickelson Award winner and recent Walker Cupper. He will now play North Carolina’s Austin Greaser.

Steelman, who was well-rested after wrapping up his Round-of-16 match before the horn blew for inclement weather Thursday evening, hung with Castillo early after losing the first hole, never trailing by worse than 1 down. He birdied the par-3 sixth to square the match, and then as Castillo made some uncharacteristic mistakes late, Steelman closed the deal with a conceded par on the par-3 16 th hole.

“The key is just don’t be intimidated,” Steelman said. “Ricky’s a great player and he’s had success at a very high level, but I just had to believe that I’m a pretty good player, too.”

After all, Steelman and Castillo were both second-team All-SEC selections last season.

Coming out of high school, Steelman arguably didn’t have the game to make a deep U.S. Amateur run. But he improved quickly, notching four top-4 finishes last spring, including his second college victory, at Missouri’s home event. This summer he’s contended at some top amateur tournaments and cracked the top 100 in the world.

With the Tigers making a coaching change, Steelman sought a change of scenery. He knew he wanted to go somewhere that would prepare him for the PGA Tour. Heppler didn’t even have to log into the transfer portal to attract Steelman.

“He’s really committed, and I think he just looked around, and his skillset and goals had changed since high school, and he saw himself in a different light,” Heppler said. “He wants to play the Tour, and he looked around, and not to pat ourselves on the back, but it’s gone pretty well for our guys.”

Steelman, an economics major with three years of eligibility left, wasted no time deciding on Georgia Tech. Leaving his home state was tough, but the Columbia native moved to Atlanta at the beginning of the summer to start classes and settle into a routine at the Yellow Jackets’ practice facility.

“I told him I thought it was important to get married again as soon as possible,” Heppler said. “I just wanted to make him feel like he’s already adjusted and that he’s not coming into a new scenario come Aug. 23. Hopefully he feels like he’s already in his place.”

Steelman now rooms with teammates Connor Howe and Ben Smith, through which he’s developed a friendship with Ogletree, who still lives near campus. The 2019 U.S. Amateur champ is still recovering from hip surgery, but he’s been cleared by doctors to start playing holes again.

Many of his practice days are spent alongside Steelman.

“He bombs it,” said Ogletree via phone on Friday afternoon; he had just turned on the television coverage. “He hits it far and straight.”

Ogletree didn’t have much advice to give Steelman before this week. He knew the tall, lanky transfer was playing well enough, so that’s what he told him, and that play has continued into match play.

“It’s always nice to be around somebody that’s done something and tells you that you can do the same thing,” Heppler said.

Ogletree did say that if Steelman advances to the semifinals, he’ll likely call. That’s when, as Ogletree says, the real pressure begins. That’s when berths to the U.S. Open and Masters are on the line.

“The crowds go from not much to pretty big, and you know everything that rides on that match,” Ogletree said. “I felt like I put a lot more pressure on myself in the semifinal match, and I never really got it under control until the back nine. I think I learned some stuff from that that helped me going forward.”

Georgia Tech actually boasts four U.S. Amateur winners – Bobby Jones being the other, five different times – but because the USGA only awards one Havemeyer these days (and the player usually keeps it), the athletic department has just one trophy on display.

Until this year, though, only the names of Jones and Kuchar were on the base. Heppler finally was able to ship the base overseas and have Ogletree and Strafaci added to it.

“It’s as updated as you can get,” Heppler said, before quickly adding, “until right now.”

He may have to ship it right back.

“I’ll be fine with that,” Heppler said. “That is money well spent, I promise.”

Florida's Fred Biondi overcomes a five-stroke deficit, makes history at NCAA Championship

Some tournaments are won, others are lost, but this time both applied equally, ultimately rendering a verdict in favor of Florida’s Fred Biondi, the new NCAA Men’s individual national champion.

Biondi, a senior from Brazil, began the final round five shots in arrears of leader Ross Steelman of Georgia Tech at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., a hill too steep to climb without a substantial assist from Steelman, who provided one with bogeys on his final three holes.

Steelman’s closing stumble resulted in a final-round score of three-over-par 73. Biondi, playing a few holes behind Steelman, played his final five holes in one under to complete a round of three-under-par 67, equaling the best score of the day by those finishing in the top 10. He defeated Steelman and Jackson Buchanan of Illinois by one.

“I just stayed really patient, that was the key the whole day today,” Biondi said. “No matter what happened, whether I was hitting good shots or bad shots, was to keep the same attitude, keep my head down and put the best swings I could.”

He was on the sixth hole when he first saw a leader board, after which he double bogeyed the seventh hole. “I had no idea where I stood until the 15th tee," he said. "I asked and they said I was one back.”

More From Golf Digest

Moments later, he saw he was tied, and then, with three holes to play, he saw he was one ahead. “I just need to par out,” he said. He did so expertly, including a long two-putt par on the 18th green for the victory. He completed 72 holes in seven-under-par 273 to become the third player in Florida history to win the individual championship, joining Bob Murphy in 1966 and Nick Gilliam in 2001. Moreover, he became the first player from South America to win the title.

Steelman's demise included one bad break, when he laid up with his tee shot on the short par-4 17th. His ball came to rest in a sand-filled divot that ultimately led to a second straight bogey. Then on 18, he blistered a drive, then pushed his second shot from only 135 yards right of the green and nearly into the water. A difficult chip and two putts later, he was down one and had to await his verdict.

Steelman seemed to take the loss in stride and will pivot immediately to the eight-team match play competition that will begin Tuesday morning. Georgia Tech finished tied for fifth. North Carolina finished first, two shots ahead of Florida and Illinois. The other qualifiers were Pepperdine, Florida State, Virginia and Arizona State.

Top-seeded Vanderbilt, in the upset of the competition, failed to advance, tying for 11th and finishing nine strokes back of Arizona State.

Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech, No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, also had a disappointing tournament, finishing tied for 29th in his final amateur event. He finished first in the PGA Tour University standings, giving him a tour exemption for the rest of this year and all of next season.
