Elvis Costello Reconvenes With Old Friends at NYC Concert: Review
Elvis Costello has been looking backward lately. "How have you been?" he asked the audience Thursday night at Pier 17, an outdoor rooftop venue in downtown Manhattan. "Maybe I should say: Where have you been?"
The singer-songwriter returned to live playing almost a year ago, but his current tour showcases songs from The Boy Named If , an album of punchy rock 'n' roll recorded with the Imposters and released earlier this year.
Nostalgia isn't an accurate description of what Costello is doing now. He isn't pining for the good old days; instead, he's revisiting the people, places and events that brought him to where he is today.
His opening act at Thursday's show was Nick Lowe , who produced Costello's first five albums, from 1977's My Aim Is True through 1981’s Trust . He also wrote "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding," which Costello recorded in 1979 but Lowe first performed in 1974 with the band Brinsley Schwarz. Lowe and Costello also performed "Indoor Fireworks" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding," marking the first time the duo has performed together on the road since 1989. "We really looked up to Nick Lowe, but he is a lot taller than me," Costello joked onstage.
Also in attendance was Allan Mayes, who played with Costello in their first, teenage band, Rusty. Their recently released debut album, The Resurrection of Rust , has put Mayes, who now lives in Texas, in the spotlight after a relatively low profile over the past several decades. They performed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon earlier this week.
Costello was backed by his band the Imposters, which includes former Attractions Steve Nieve on keyboards and Pete Thomas on drums, along with bassist Davey Faragher. Charlie Sexton on guitar, a regular member of Bob Dylan 's band, also joined Costello onstage.
He also brought Nicole Atkins, who sings on The Boy Named If , to help out on a few songs Thursday night. Costello didn't stray far from original arrangements of songs like "Accidents Will Happen" and "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea," but with Lowe, Mayes and Atkins assisting, there was a freshness to the set. (You can see the set list from the show below.)
Still, there is some unpredictability to his concerts. Earlier this week in Buffalo, he slipped into "Alison" a snippet of the Motown song "This Old Heart of Mine," which was co-written by Lamont Dozier, who died the day before . On Thursday, he combined "Watching the Detectives" with Charles Mingus' "Invisible Lady." (Costello wrote words to Mingus' music for the 2002 album Tonight at Noon: Three of Four Shades of Love .)
Costello intends to keep the surprises coming in 2023. On his Tonight Show appearance , he announced a 10-date run at New York City's Gramercy Theatre scheduled for February that will include different songs at each performance: "200 songs over 10 nights," he said.
He may be revisiting the past on his current tour, but, as always, he's looking to the future.

Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick MacManus on the 25 August 1954, he is an English singer/songwriter from Paddington, London, UK.
Born in Paddington, London, UK, Costello is the son of parents Lilian Alda and Ross MacManus, the latter of whom was a trumpet player and band leader.
Costello’s first musical endeavour was with the band Rusty, which he started when he moved to Liverpool, UK, with his mother in 1971. After returning to London, another band Flip City came into fruition and saw the singer/songwriter adopt a pub-rock style of music and performance. He was later signed to the independent label Stiff Records which suggested a name change, to which he combined Elvis Presley’s first name with the name his father performed with on stage, Costello. The label released the debut album “My Aim Is True” in 1976 to good reviews as well as the reggae-driven “Watching The Detectives”.
Later being associated with the punk and new wave scenes due to Costello’s unabashed passion and vigour. He soon made a name for himself with his eclectic, widely influenced instrumentation and style, drawing influences from folk and rock to ska and reggae, along with seemingly infinitely-literate lyrics. The 1978 album entitled “This Year’s Model” was the first recorded with his backing band The Attractions and featured more of a hard-rock sound than his earlier material.
Costello’s ambitious 1979 album “Armed Forces” took the band to No. 2 in the UK chart, as did Costello’s most successful single “Oliver’s Army”. This same year Costello found time to produce the debut album for the band The Special, sparking a ska revival.
The early 1980s were a very good time to be an Elvis Costello fan, in which time he released no fewer than nine albums including “Trust”, “Imperial Bedroom” and “Punch the Clock” and consistently toured with The Attractions, before tensions were raised between Costello and bassist Bruce Thomas, which caused a split by 1986.
The majority of Costello’s work since the split has been as a solo artist, defined by his smart and diverse wordplay, genre-blurring music style and inherent passion. Costello has been awarded numerous awards throughout his career including a grammy, two Brit Award nominations for Best British Male, has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone ranked the band 80th on their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.
Live reviews
I've been a fan of Elvis Costello's since the Seventies and must have seen him live more than fifty times, in all his different incarnations. It's a widely held view that he's at his best when playing on his own, an
opinion I share.
His Cardiff gig on the tour he'd decided to name, with his trademark wry humour,Detour, was a good example of how one man armed only with a piano, some stringed instruments and a career's worth of great songs can provide great entertainment. The set spanned his whole career, from the likes of 'Red Shoes' to a song from The New Basement Tapes album ('Down On The Bottom').
Along the way there were the hits e.g. 'Oliver's Army' and 'Watching The Detectives' and enough rarely heard songs, like 'Ghost Train', 'Watch Your Step','Love Field' and 'Kinder Murder' to keep Elvis snobs like me happy.
Add a few judiciously-selected covers ('She' and 'Side By Side', among others) and the return of the frontwomen of support band Larkin Poe to much appreciative applause to help rock up the last third of the show, and you had a fine performance.
Pride of place must go, however, to 'Shipbuilding',performed alone at the piano with an intensity that rolled back the years to the time it was written. As always with Elvis, the political side of his character was not left unexplored, both in such songs and his chat between them. Also worth mentioning was the tailoring of the stage set to acknowledge that Elvis was in Wales, the sort of attention to detail which is always appreciated.

Veteran rock icon Elvis Costello has now reached his 60s yet shows no sign of slowing down his relentless touring schedule. Delighting fans globally, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is considered to be one of the most well known singer/songwriters who has collaborated with a huge amount of stars.
His discography stands at 30 albums so condensing this into a 20 song setlist is a difficult task however the way in which Costello is able to charm a crowd means they remain enthusiastic to whatever he chooses to play. There are of course big cheers for his hit single 'Veronica' which clearly a lot of the audience were hoping he would play. The songwriter delights his fans with tales of years past, the beginnings of his career and his travels around the globe. He also speaks fondly of his supportive musicians and introduces them each to the crowd who cheers them on.
Big finisher 'Watching the Detectives' leaves the crowd cheering and stamping their feet for the reappearance of Elvis. He leads the musicians back onstage and performs a final time before exiting proving he truly is an icon of rock.
Elvis was absolutely spectacular, combining a mix of jovial storytelling and timeless classics marked on a night that all of the New Orleanians in attendance will not soon forget. His video clip of "Papa Costello" aka Ross McManus rocking If I Had A Hammer on BBC television "back in the day" was just plain COOL! To top it all off, he had local R&B legend Alan Tourssaint join him onstage to thoroughly captivate an already grateful audience. My personal favorite was the two singer/songwriters performing Deep Dark Truthful Mirror. The intimate Civic Theatre was the perfect venue for one of the best shows I've seen, since moving to the Big Easy five years ago.
Elvis Costello came to Jazz festival 2014 in Montreal. I am a big fan of his work. I reserved 2 tickets as soon as I could in the new Maison symphonique.
I was amazed with his solo show. Him, by himself playing all his guitars (about 15 different ones) and his voice, deep, true and very melancholic.
Felt swept up my feet when he sang Alison, shipbuilding (with keyboard), everyday I write the book, Peace-love and understanding, etc. I would have sat there for another 3 hours.
Can't wait for him to come back solo or with his band. Amazing man, creator and music industry underdog leader. Bravo Elvis.
Elvis Costello was once again played Glasgow and as usual I attended .
Although I had never seen him in The Armadillo it was a great night.
It was a tour through his greatest hits and a joy with 2 old Attractions band members playing along side him with 2 female backing singers and bass all covered brilliantly.
I did although find Elvis voice somewhat strained at times on certain songs (Which I have never seen happen before).
Finished of with Pump it Up ! And that they did pumped it up until the roof nearly came of the building.
Thanks Elvis.
Jesus Christ on a broomstick this show was painful. Elvis sounds like something wounded. Long, incoherent, rambling stories may have been a saving grace from his singing. No crowd atmosphere - people seemed to be chatting. I left after 45 minutes. And no - it could not have gotten better. The main sounds like he is in the painful pushing throes of constipation.
Kingsbury Hall was the perfect venue to see Elvis...Larkin Poe was the opening act and they were very talented...Elvis was amazing...only had to wait 39 years to see him and the wait was worth it...basically a "Storytellers" type show...great visuals and he was in fine form...I would highly recommend as my wife and I came out totally satisfied with the show...
Such an intimate evening! Can you imagine how it feels to have Mr Costello behind your seat singing Allison to you? Now i can! Genius! Nice set up, i only missed Oliver's Army, but such a good set list. You don't miss anyone, he's good enough by himself playing acoustic. GREAT EXPERIENCE
I have been listening to him since i was 14.my favorite line is "who put these fingerprints on my imaginstion.i have a lot of favorite singer song writers, but find him the most versatile.if i could pick one person to sit with in a pub, and talk it would be him.di
Musically good. Visually good.
Too loud for the Ryman.
Elvis Costello was obviously focussed on his new album as he didn't play many hits.
Certainly not my favourites: Oliver's Army, Good Year for the Roses, Veronica or I can't stand up for falling down.

Elvis Costello aka Declan MacManus aka (the original) Napoleon Dynamite aka The King of America announced today he will be going back on tour alongside his old pal Nick Lowe. The tour's name, We're All Going on a Summer Holiday, sounds sweet, and it is. It's also the first line from the Costello-penned "The Beat" off his second album - which was produced by Lowe.
The pair have been dear friends since meeting at a bar across from the legendary Cavern club, where the Beatles used to play. Besides working and playing with each other for decades, Costello has covered the Lowe-penned anthem "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" over 1,000 times in concert - sometimes with his pal on stage. It was also included on his third album.
Lowe produced much of the classic music Elvis created in his early days: My Aim Is True (1977), This Year's Model (1978), Armed Forces (1979), Get Happy!! (1980) Trust (1981), and Blood & Chocolate (1986).
Despite having battled a prostate cancer scare a few years back, Elvis, 68, has been as prolific as ever and a creative force who is no stranger to the live stage.
Of his more interesting recording offerings of late was his reimagined version of This Year's Model dubbed Spanish Model where his lyrics were altered and Latin singers like Juanes and Nina Diaz "covered" the songs of the beloved 1978 LP.
Meanwhile on stage, Elvis, creator of the Spinning Songbook , just a few years ago performed “100 Songs and More,” a ten-night engagement at the Gramercy Theater where he belted out over 230 original songs, repeating just three titles .
Is that what inspired Metallica's forthcoming no-repeat weekend M72 World Tour ? Perhaps.
Joining Costello's band, The Imposters, is guitar slinger Charlie Sexton. Even Elvis is self-deprecating when referring to his own talent on his instrument, so having hired gun will bring more to the Imposters' sound which is typically helmed by the always-impressive keyboardist Steve Nieve. The 23-date June/July tour kicks off in Vancouver, Canada and concludes at the Met in Philly. Tickets available on Elvis's website . Elvis Costello began writing songs at the age of thirteen. 2017 marked the 40th anniversary of the release his first record album, “My Aim Is True”.
He is perhaps best known for the songs, “Alison”, “Pump It Up”, “Everyday I Write The Book” and his rendition of the Nick Lowe song, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding”.
His record catalogue of more than thirty albums includes the contrasting pop and rock & roll albums, “This Year’s Model”, ”Armed Forces”, “Imperial Bedroom”, “Blood and Chocolate” and “King Of America” along with an album of country covers, “Almost Blue” and two collections of orchestrally accompanied piano ballads, “Painted From Memory” - with Burt Bacharach and “North”.
He has performed worldwide with his bands, The Attractions, His Confederates - which featured two members of Elvis Presley’s “T.C.B” band - and his current group, The Imposters – Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher - as well as solo concerts, most recently his acclaimed solo show, “Detour” .
Costello has entered into songwriting collaborations with Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, the Brodsky Quartet and with Allen Toussaint for the album “The River In Reverse” , the first major label recording project to visit New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and completed there while the city was still under curfew.
Costello’s songs have been recorded by a great number of artists, including, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Georgie Fame, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, June Tabor, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Robert Wyatt, Anne Sofie von Otter, Solomon Burke and Darlene Love.
During his career, Costello has received numerous prestigious honors, including two Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting, a Dutch Edison Award with The Brodsky Quartet for “The Juliet Letters” , the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef Award, a BAFTA for the music written with Richard Harvey for Alan Bleasdale’s television drama series “G.B.H.” and a Grammy for “I Still Have That Other Girl” from his 1998 collaboration with Burt Bacharach, “Painted From Memory”.
Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. In the same year, Costello was awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award.
In 2004 Costello was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song – “The Scarlet Tide,” co-written with T Bone Burnett and sung by Alison Krauss in the motion picture “Cold Mountain”
In 2016 Elvis Costello was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in the company of Chip Taylor and Tom Petty.
From 2011-2014: Having recorded the albums, “When I Was Cruel”, “The Delivery Man” and “Momofuku” together since 2002, Elvis Costello and The Imposters – Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher - toured for four years with “The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” , employing a 20-foot game-show wheel with which audience members selected the next song to be performed.
In 2015, the Penguin/Blue Rider imprint published Costello’s nuanced and evocative memoir, “Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink” while he was appearing in “Detour” a largely solo performance – although frequently augmented by Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe - in which anecdotes were connected to songs on the cue of archival photographs, cartoons and other visual oddities projected onto a giant vintage-style television set. This presentation recently concluded after 106 shows in 20 countries.
Look Now, released in October 2018 by Concord Records, was Costello's’ first collection of new material in five years and his first with The Imposters in a decade. Costello worked with co-producer Sebastian Krys at studios in Hollywood, New York City and Vancouver, British Columbia, to create an "uptown pop record.” In addition to the songs Costello wrote, the album included a collaboration with Carole King and three with Burt Bacharach, who plays piano on two, “Don’t Look Now” and “Photographs Can Lie”.
In 2019, Costello released the Purse EP, consisting of four songs containing songwriting collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney, as well as musical settings of lyrics by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. In the same year, Costello was: presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting, in Nashville by the Americana Music Association; awarded an O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music on the Queens Birthday Honours List; and announced as a recipient of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the class of 2020

Bluesfest Touring announces Elvis Costello & The Imposters 2023 tour
Elvis Costello & The Imposters will return to Australia in 2023, headlining shows in
Sydney and Melbourne, following their appearance at the 34th Annual
Bluesfest in Byron Bay over the Easter Long Weekend.
“It’s been twelve years since our first appearance at the Byron Bay
Bluesfest – when we shared an evening bill with Bob Dylan, and I got to
sit in with Mavis Staples. I see a number of friends and favourites are
on this year’s bill, so who knows what thrills, spills and encounters
may take place.
There is nothing that jolts a show alive so much as stack of strong new songs but we
recorded ‘The Boy Named If’ while locked away in our lairs and hideaways, so bringing
those songs to the stage has made the hits and highlights of the songbook ring out anew.
The Imposters will make their Sydney Opera House bow 39 years after I
made my solo debut at that legendary venue.
The very name of the venue probably should have got my attention when I first arrived
in Melbourne in 1978, pursued by a press posse after a slight dust-up in Sydney.
After all, the ‘Hammersmith Palais’ was my dad’s place of work for most
of my childhood. It seems I am destined and disposed to return to venues
called the “Palais”, like a homing pigeon or some other more tuneful
bird. The proximity to the seaside and a fun-fair only adds the thrill.
The Imposters and I are not bringing any vaudevillian contraptions with
us on this occasion, but we will be joined by our guest guitarist,
Charlie Sexton and a stack strong recently recorded songs that have
caused the hits and headlines of the repertoire to either ring out anew
or fight for their place in the show. “We are ready as anybody can be
and look forward to seeing you there.” – Elvis Costello

Rating: 2 out of 5 Disappointing by Ro on 3/2/23 The Wind Creek Event Center - Bethlehem. Besides barely hearing the songs that I thought I was going to hear during the 2 hours plus concert, Elvis seemed to sound better on those unknown songs instead of those songs that I was familiar with and wanted to hear.
