Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour Is a 3-Hour Career-Spanning Victory Lap

By Waiss Aramesh

How do we measure the impact of a musician in 2023? Streams can be bought. Awards can be finessed. Is it when demand for show tickets leads to a congressional hearing about Ticketmaster’s policies? Or when flight attendants shout out a fanbase making a pilgrimage to see a tour opener? Or when TikToks of merch inspirations and setlist predictions rack up millions of views? Nearly a decade ago, a headline ran declaring ‘ Taylor Swift Is The Music Industry’ and those with even the slightest pulse on pop culture can tell she’s only grown more omnipresent since. It all led to a warm evening in Glendale, Arizona where months after delivering her most commercially-successful album to date, Midnights , Swift debuted a discography-spanning setlist that lasted over three hours and kicked off an aptly-named stadium run. The Eras Tour has arrived.

After night had fallen and GAYLE and Paramore revved the crowd up with a mix of recent chart-toppers (GAYLE’s “abcdefu”) and cultural anthems (Paramore’s “Misery Business”), it was time for the main event. At 7:57pm, a timer appeared on a massive screen prompting screams from all corners of State Farm Stadium. Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” played as fans braced themselves for the arrival of Swift. When the timer hit 0:00, the house we’d seen in the “Lover” music video assembled on the screen, indicating that this evening was first and foremost about reviving the feelings each era evoked.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

It’s easy to compare one of Swift’s stadium shows to something you’d see on Broadway — never has that been more true than for The Eras Tour . The setlist is cut up into acts, grouped together by eras for each of Swift’s ten studio albums. For each era/act, Swift went full-send into that album’s look, feel, costume, color blocking, and more.

For both Swift and her fans, it’s been a long road to get to The Eras Tour kickoff. Friday night’s opener was four projects, millions of record sales, and over 1,500 days removed from the last tour stop on the Reputation stadium tour in 2018. Plus, who can forget the Ticketmaster fiasco in handling the sale of The Eras Tour tickets, which not only prompted an apology to Swift from the ticketing monopoly but also for Congress to investigate.

Taylor Swift Arrives at First Chiefs Game Since Super Bowl Win

Travis kelce's pr firm weighing legal action after 'false and fabricated' breakup document goes viral, football is back — and so is the nfl's obsession with taylor swift.

For “The Man,” Swift completed her Versace look with a blazer and made sure everyone could see the red bottoms when she kicked her feet up on a conference room table as she delivered the masterfully written and scathing assessment of gender inequality in pop culture. Swift closed out the Lover era act with “You Need to Calm Down” and “The Archer,” the latter getting a beautifully stripped down rendition so Swift’s vocals echoed across the stadium: “Because all of my enemies started out friends / Help me hold onto you.”

Something about Swift — she’s online. If the fact that she decided to end last night with the TikTok-friendly “Karma” doesn’t make that obvious enough, her joke about disliking Evermore hammers home the point.

“We’re currently in the middle of the Evermore album, which is an album I absolutely love despite what some of you say on TikTok,” Swift said with a grin.

Later on in the act reserved for her ninth studio album, in line with how theatrical the event was, Swift set up a beautiful dinner setting only to deliver a heart-wrenching rendition of “Tolerate It.” She also performed “Tis the Damn Season,” “Willow,” “Marjorie,” and “Champagne Problems,” giving fans a sizable taste of the Evermore live experience they weren’t able to receive when the project came out in 2020.

For the acts dedicated to Reputation and Red , fans were treated to a masterclass in visuals and hitmaking, two key elements that has assured Swift prolonged success for as long as she’s had it. The powerful, striking, snake motifs were an awesome callback for fans who attended the Reputation tour.

For Red , Swift went through “22,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and “I Knew You Were Trouble. She closed out the act with a beautiful performance of the 10-minute “Taylor’s Version” of “All Too Well.” In the evening’s most ethereal moment, small white confetti made to look like snow blanketed the State Farm Stadium as she neared the end of her magnum opus, singing “Because in this city’s barren cold/I still remember the first fall of snow/And how it glistened how it fell/I remember it all too well.” Not only is Swift a savant for world-building, but she’s perfected the ability to translate those worlds into the live experience.

“ Folklore was such a different album for me. I start writing it about two seconds into the pandemic. I was just so very aware of how much time I was going to have to spend away from you,” Swift explained before launching into “Betty,” “The Last Great American Dynasty,” “August,” “Illicit Affairs,” “My Tears Ricochet,” and “Cardigan.” “With this album, I thought it would be so fun to create characters, and storylines, and they can live in different times, and then can do all of these things, and they could fall in love and hurt each other and go to war…”

1989’s era act turned the party up and restored the energy, with Swift donning a Roberto Cavalli top and skirt and going through “Style,” “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “Bad Blood.”

To cap off the evening, Swift returned to Midnights , performing album highlights “Lavender Haze,” “Mastermind,” and more. It was hard to ignore the immense gratitude the singer continued to exude throughout the evening, with the “thank yous” coming more and more often the closer she got to the end.

Eventually, the singer asked the crowd if they had time for one more and launched into her finale, “Karma,” a track with a passionate chorus that’s begging to be scream-sung in a room of over 70,000 who’ve been waiting for this exact moment for years. Maybe it’s fitting that an artist who’s had more than her fair share of ups and downs, and at times has been the most polarizing musician alive, ends her stadium tour opener with a song about how she can finally protect her peace. Karma’s a relaxing thought, indeed.

At one point during the first show of her long-awaited, highly anticipated Eras tour on Friday night (Mar. 17), Taylor Swift described herself as “really overwhelmed, and trying to keep it together all night.” It’s easy to understand: this enormous stadium trek, one of pop’s hottest tickets in years, also happens to be Swift’s first proper tour in five years, thanks primarily to the pandemic. The pop superstar has released a whopping four original albums (plus two re-recorded ones) since last hitting the road, and on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., she told the crowd that she had been dreaming about this day — the day that she could finally perform this wealth of new material — for a long time.

“Overwhelming” would also be an apt way to describe the sheer tonnage of the Eras tour: with segments dedicated to all 10 of Swift’s studio albums, the show entertained a sold-out, frequently screaming stadium audience for 3 hours and 15 minutes, as Swift tirelessly showcased her skill set and various artistic personas across a whopping 44 songs. The most dominant artist in popular music has used this live run to reflect on the various iterations of her career to date, and the achievement is often staggering, with costume changes, set-piece upheaval, vulnerable moments in a crowd of thousands and sing-alongs that will rival the scope of any tour this year.

The Eras tour is going to satisfy a lot of Swift diehards in the coming months, who will surely find their own favorite pockets of the set list. And while Swift fans should embrace the entire experience, the opening night provided some clear-cut highlights. Here are the 13 best moments from the Eras tour kickoff in Glendale on Friday night:

The Cathartic Opening of “Cruel Summer”

Although Swift technically opened the show with part of a different Lover track, “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince,” the brilliant synth-pop single “Cruel Summer” was the first to get the full, stadium-show treatment, complete with a raised platform, backup dancers and Swift unveiling a diamond-encrusted one-piece with matching tall boots. For both the fans in attendance and Swift herself, the song seemed to represent an exhalation — this tour was finally happening, and this immaculate song, three-and-a-half years old at this point, was finally being performed.

The First Era-Hop, Into ‘Fearless’

“Tonight, we’re going to be going on an adventure, one era at a time!” Swift declared a few songs into the show — a concept that truly sunk in a few minutes later, when the first era of the evening, Lover , gave way to Fearless both in the set list and stylistically. Gone was the glitter getup and deep pop rhythms, replaced with a fringe dress and sunny country licks from Swift’s acoustic guitar, as she jumped into the Fearless title track, “You Belong With Me” and “Love Story.” The “Fearless” change-up marked the moment that the idea of the Eras tour fully snapped into place, and the crowd was enthralled with the approach.

Taylor’s ‘Evermore’ Theory Defense

In the middle of the Evermore mini-set, Swift sat down at a moss-covered piano and talked to the audience about how gratifying it was that she was finally getting to perform her “four new members of the family” — Lover, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights , the four albums she’s released since her last tour. She added that Evermore “is an album I absolutely love — despite what some of you say on TikTok!” She paused for comic effect, then deadpanned, “I’ve seen it. I’ve seen all of it!” Even if some TikTok users claim that Swift hasn’t personally warmed as much to Folklore ’s counterpart as her other projects, Swift refuted those theories and gave Evermore prime placement in her set list, with a total of five songs performed from the album, including “’Tis The Damn Season,” “Willow” and “Tolerate It.”

The Unexpected “Don’t Blame Me” Showcase

When the Evermore part of the set ended and snake scales appeared on screen, everyone in attendance knew that Reputation was next up — and while singles like “…Ready For It?,” “Delicate” and “Look What You Made Me Do” were all delivered with high energy, “Don’t Blame Me” was bestowed with a fiery passion that, even compared to how its swooping harmonies were presented on the Reputation tour, elevated the album cut. Quite literally: Swift sprung skyward on a platform while attacking a big, showy note during the song’s climax, making for one of the more memorable technical performances of the evening.

“Enchanted” as the Dramatic 'Speak Now' Representative

It’s hard to quibble with set list exclusions when the set list in question contains 44 songs… but still, Speak Now fans are not going to be thrilled that the Eras tour contains only one song from that particular era. At least that song stood out as a highlight: “Enchanted” found Swift in a flowing ball gown maximizing the emotional stakes, with acoustic strums laying the groundwork for a full-band crescendo. If “Mine,” “Back to December,” “Mean” and “Dear John” aren’t getting any burn on this tour, “Enchanted” will have to be a powerhouse for the third-album diehards… and on opening night, it was just that.

The Extended Version of “All Too Well”…

After rolling through Red highlights like “22,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble,” Swift spoke to the audience about how meaningful the success of both the original Red in 2012 and the re-recorded version in 2021 had been for her. Then, Swift asked if the crowd had an extra 10 minutes to spare. The chart-topping 10-minute version of “All Too Well” followed the roars in response, and naturally functioned as a centerpiece for the entire set, arriving roughly at the halfway point and becoming an emotional anchor for the evening. By the time that paper snowflakes fell across the stadium during the final minute, the magic of the moment was widely accepted.

…And the Three-Word Shout-Along Within “All Too Well”

When you attend a Taylor Swift show in 2023 (and beyond), you simply will not experience a bigger sing-along moment than the phrase “F–k the patriarchy!” In the 10-minute “All Too Well.” Not only does everyone in attendance sing along, they scream along, and wind up to it in the preceding lyrics! Talk about magic! Count on Swifties loudly flipping off men in power, in unison, for years to come.

'Folklore' Deep Cut-Turned-Viral Smash “August”

Taylor Swift pays attention to her fans — when she says she’s seen the Evermore hate on TikTok, she’s kidding around, but rest assured she’s actually seen it. So when deciding which tracks from the sprawling Folklore to play, there’s no doubt that Swift noticed the fan adoption to “August,” which wasn’t a focus track upon the album’s release but has since become a fan favorite that’s often bubbling up on social media (especially during the titular month each year). The mass sing-along of “August” may have caught some offline attendees as a surprise, but Swift’s fans fiercely love the wistful folk-pop track, and demonstrated their appreciation at the opener.

The Neon Golf Clubs of “Blank Space”

Swift’s backup dancers rode out on neon-lit bicycles during her performance of the 1989 smash, but that was only prelude to one of the night’s better visuals: Swift and her cohorts brandishing blue-lit golf clubs during the bridge, and then smashing an animated car (a la Swift’s crazed attack in the “Blank Space” video) on a mid-stage screen, each new dent in time with the song’s beat. It was difficult to look away from the spectacle, and became the sort of sight gag that sticks with you long after the show has wrapped.

The Surprise Acoustic Track

Deep into the evening, Swift grabbed her guitar and announced that she planned to perform an acoustic song that wasn’t included in the Eras set list during the tour, with the hope of never duplicating the song she selected for each performance. It’s a strong move in theory — even after the Eras set list gets mulled over endlessly, there will still be a new surprise each night — and was even better in practice, as the achingly beautiful “Mirrorball” was selected for the first performance. The acoustic tracks probably won’t be as strong as the Folklore standout on a nightly basis, but for the Glendale audience, the choice made opening night even more special.

The “Anti-Hero” Metaphor Comes to Life

Earlier in the evening, Taylor Swift gave a begrudging shout-out to everyone in the audience who was dressed like a “sexy baby” in tribute to the “Anti-Hero” lyric; later, when her latest No. 1 smash was performed, Swift embodied the “monster on the hill” line that follows it. On the video screen behind her performance, Swift turned herself into a Godzilla-esque creature terrorizing a city before glumly sitting on (and destroying) an office building. On a night with a lot of impressive choreography and stage setups, that straightforward visual — Swift as the problem, it’s her — became one of the more interesting spectacles of the show, and added to the performance of the hit single.

The “Vigilante Shit” Dance Routine

Speaking of spectacle: Swift goes full-on burlesque alongside her dancers for the Midnights standout, dancing on and around a chair and having an absolute blast while doing it. The song comes about three hours into the performance, but Swift conjures every ounce of energy to turn one of the more sparsely produced songs in her catalog into an enthralling jam.

Ending With a Fan Favorite

The final era presented during the Eras tour is Midnights , and Swift could have capped it with a hit — “Anti-Hero,” of course, or maybe fast-rising follow-up “Lavender Haze.” Instead, she concludes the evening with a trio of non-hits that fans truly adore: “Bejeweled,” “Mastermind” and “Karma.” The logic behind that decision is simple: the Eras tour is less about hits than it is about fan service, and ending on a song like “Karma” nods to those who inhale every song on a Swift track list instead of just paying attention to the singles. This run of shows is for the fully committed Swift listeners, and an album cut like “Karma” is the perfect way to bid them adieu for now.

Taylor Swift  made her triumphant return to the concert stage Friday night to kick off her Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, where she told the boisterous 70,000 fans at State Farm Arena how much she's missed them.

The Midnights songstress soaked up the atmosphere, looking up and all over the crowd while donning a shimmery dress. After catching her breath, the 33-year-old singer grew emotional as she shared with fans that the roaring reception was giving her all the feels.

"I don’t know how to process all of this in the way that it’s making me feel right now," she said. "We have a lot of time for me to try to sum up how I’m feeling about how much I’ve missed you and how happy I am to see you. Let me just start by saying you guys are making feel fantastic!"

The Eras Tour, her first tour since 2018, featured stunning visuals, from a curved screen serving as her backdrop to the singer, at one point while transitioning to her Midnights era, taking a dive and seemingly swimming across the stage.

All in all, Swift performed for a whopping three hours and 12 minutes, and she incredibly performed  every second without taking a single break. In that glorious time Swift belted out 44 songs, including "Shake It Off," "Midnight Rain," "You Belong With Me," "Willow," "Don't Blame Me," "Fearless," "Love Story," "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" and "Karma."

Swifties were also treated to her flawless fashion style, including sparkling bodysuits, an elegant ballgown, ethereal dresses and even a one-legged snake suit.

At long last, Swifties got what they had been wanting for years, though the highly-anticipated concert didn't come without some pain.

As ET previously reported , fans were fuming with Ticketmaster after technical difficulties during the presale for the Eras Tour left many fans digitally stranded when they couldn't purchase tickets. The so-called  Ticketmaster fiasco  was so intense, it even drew  attention from Congress .

To celebrate the start of the Eras Tour, Swift dropped four previously unreleased tracks Friday at midnight: "Eyes Open (Taylor's Version)," "Safe & Sound (Taylor's Version)," "If This Was a Movie (Taylor's Version)" and the never-before-heard track,  "All of the Girls You Loved Before."

"Eyes Open"  and  "Safe & Sound,"  featuring Joy Williams and John Paul White, are off the 2012 soundtrack to  The Hunger Games .  "If This Was a Movie"  was originally released in the 2010 deluxe version of  Speak Now .

Swifties were so passionate about the Eras Tour finally kicking off in Glendale, Arizona, that the city started popping up as " Swift City, ERA-zona " on Google Maps.

And it was labeled as "a place of worship."

Taylor Swift Kicks Off Eras Tour with Career-Spanning 44-Song Setlist

Swift broke her career down into her respective album eras as she treated Glendale, Arizona to a three-hour gig Friday

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California and has appeared on Extra! , The Talk, Access Hollywood and Good Morning America .

After months of ticketing dilemmas , new song releases and even having her name honored in the city where it all went down , Taylor Swift 's long-awaited Eras Tour officially kicked off in Glendale, Arizona on Friday night.

It was the career celebration fans had been expecting since it was announced in November — and perhaps even an extended (Taylor's Version) of what they expected!

Swift, 33, captivated her audience with a massive, career-spanning 44-song setlist, as the show ran for 3 hours and 13 minutes — with the singer-songwriter nodding to each of her respective album eras and saving room at the end for her latest LP: Midnights .

The setlist itself featured a bit of everything, from debut-era favorite " Tim McGraw " to her latest No. 1 smash "Anti Hero," as Swift ran through selections from all of her studio LPs, from Taylor Swift to Midnights .

During the night, which was opened by Paramore , Swift took a few moments to explain her artistic turns, too. Before performing Folklore 's "Betty," she opened up about her decision to create characters for the Grammy-winning album.

"Sort of a running theme in my music is that I love to explain to men how to apologize ," Swift said. "I just love it. It's kind of my thing. I love to tell them, step-by-step, here's how simple this is to fix things. If you just follow these easy steps that I'm laying out for you in a three-minute song... Just love the idea of men apologizing. And basically, this is a song about a teenage boy named James who was trying to apologize to the love of his life, and her name is Betty."

"Betty" wasn't the only Folklore cut of the night, as Swift also treated attendees to "Mirrorball," "Invisible String," "Last Great American Dynasty," "August," "Illicit Affairs," "My Tears Ricochet" and "Cardigan." But those didn't come until later in the set, as she opened the show with six songs off Lover, before performing three Fearless tracks, five Evermore cuts, four favorites from Reputation, "Enchanted" from Speak Now, and later four selections from Red . The Red era moment wrapped with Swift sharing her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)."

"The fact that you embraced [ Red ] the way that you did when it came out in 2012, that blew me away," she said. "But then, I never imagined then what you would end up doing a decade later when I wanted to claim that album as my own. So, thank you."

After her detour into Folklore , the musician dazzled with "Shake It Off," "Blank Space" and a few others off 1989 , a brief return to Folklore and her self-titled debut album with "Mirrorball" and "Tim McGraw," and a closing run of Midnights tracks such as "Mastermind" and "Karma."

The opening night notably marked the live debut for several of her songs, especially some off Midnights and Evermore , and gave fans a first glimpse into Swift's elaborate on-stage set-up and outfits.

Swift didn't just throw things back with her set list or stories on stage, either, as her performance attire also nodded back to previous eras. Lover saw Swift rock a Versace bodysuit and blazer, a stunning Roberto Cavalli dress as a nod to Fearless, a Nicole + Felicia gown for Speak Now, an Alberta Ferretti dress for Folklore and a Cavalli top and skirt for 1989 . Elsewhere, she wore an entirely Oscar de la Renta fit with Christian Louboutin boots (which she rocked a few times) for Midnights , a Jessica Jones dress for an acoustic moment, an Ashish T-shirt/romper/coat combo for Red with a Gladys Tamez hat, a Cavalli catsuit and boots for Reputation , and an Etro dress and cape for Evermore .

At times, the stage included a see-through house with lit-up rooms, an enormous platform and many, many nods to her album eras — from familiar visuals displayed in the background to sequences of her diving between songs .

Swift, who wanted to look "nice" for her " guys, gals and non-binary pals ," ultimately put on the career-spanning performance for those who were able to secure tickets despite previously reported Ticketmaster hassles, where the company had to cancel the tour's general sale back in November. And as she said Friday night, she was grateful fans took the time to help her kick of the monumental occasion.

"I'm gonna take a wild guess and say, that if you're here tonight, there's a pretty good chance that you went through a considerable amount of effort to be with us tonight, is that true," Swift asked her crowd, which erupted in applause. "Well, first of all, let me say, on behalf of me and every single performer that you see on this stage — all the band, all the crew, every single person who has been putting together this tour for years — thank you from the bottom of our hearts for wanting to be with us on night one."

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour: Dates, Ticket Prices, Openers, On-Sale Info, and Everything We Know So Far

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour poster

Start planning your ticket strategy now, because Taylor Swift is officially going on tour in 2023.

As many fans suspected, Taylor is embarking on tour in support of the many albums she's released since 2017's Reputation and its tour in 2018, including Lover , evermore , folklore , Midnights and all the Taylor's Version re-records . Because that's a lot to pack into one tour, Taylor has cleverly titled her latest trip around the United States the "Eras Tour," and in her own words, it's been "a long time coming." Taylor Swift Kicks Off US Eras Tour at Super Bowl Stadium

Swift ended the concert with a seven-song set from her latest album “midnights," closing with the song “karma”, published march 18, 2023 • updated on march 18, 2023 at 7:07 pm.

Taylor Swift opened her U.S. concert series with a three-hour tour of her career.

Swift kicked off the first concert of the 27-date Eras Tour with a six-song set from her album “Lover” on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the Super Bowl was played a month ago.

“I don’t know how to address the way this is making me feel right now,” Swift, who hasn't toured since 2018, said early in the show.

She ended the concert with a seven-song set from her latest album “Midnights," closing with the song “Karma.”

In between she played clusters of songs from most of her albums — and just one, “Tim McGraw,” from her 2006 self-titled debut. In the end it took 44 songs and just over three hours for her to span her 17-year career.

Having not toured for her previous three albums, this concert series is intended to play catchup by providing the live debut of many of those songs. When Swift announced the tour in November she called it “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!).”

For 3-plus hours, Taylor Swift delivers a master class in pop ambition

A female singer plays an acoustic guitar and performs onstage

Taylor Swift stood on stage at State Farm Stadium, lights bouncing off her bedazzled leotard, and absorbed the sound of the 70,000 or so fans in front of her.

“I don’t know how to process all of this and the way it’s making me feel right now,” she said. “I can’t even go into how much I missed you because there’s no way to verbalize it.”

What Swift could put into words Friday night as she kicked off the Eras tour — her first road show since 2018, since the beginning of the pandemic, since the release of four separate studio albums (and rerecorded versions of two older LPs) — was how this whole thing would go. “Tonight we’re gonna be going on an adventure,” she told the audience. “We’re gonna be exploring the last 17 years of music that I’ve been lucky enough to make and you’ve been kind enough to care about.”

Safe and sound! Taylor Swift releases four ‘Taylor’s Version’ songs for Eras Tour launch

Pop superstar Taylor Swift debuted ‘four previously unreleased songs’ ahead of the Friday-night kickoff of her highly anticipated Eras Tour in Arizona.

March 17, 2023

Which, OK, sure — that’s how tours by famous and beloved pop acts work. And yet this show did actually feel like a novel experience, with a whopping 44 songs from all 10 of Swift’s studio albums parceled out in distinct chapters over three hours and 15 minutes. Each section had its own costumes and color scheme: that sparkly pink leotard (and matching boots) for 2019’s “Lover,” for instance, and a flouncy ballgown for 2010’s fairy-tale-obsessed “Speak Now.” For the portion of the concert dedicated to “Red,” the breakthrough 2012 smash that set her on the path toward superstardom, Swift, 33, wore a version of her T-shirt from her “22” music video, only instead of reading “NOT A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT,” this one read, “A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT” — a subtle yet meaningful tweak meant to flatter the attentiveness of the many eagle-eyed Swifties in the house.

A woman plays the piano covered in grass onstage

Indeed, Friday’s production rolled out like fan service of the most thorough and elaborate kind. “We have a lot of time for me to try to sum up how I’m feeling about how much I’ve missed you and how happy I am to see you,” Swift told the crowd at one point, doing what she could to repay a sense of demand so intense that Ticketmaster crashed when tickets for the 52-date tour went on sale last fall. (Swift is scheduled to wrap the tour with a five-night stand at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium in August.)

But the concert was also a showcase of the range and versatility that have made Swift the most successful singer-songwriter in an age defined by hip-hop. She offered yearning acoustic ballads like “Lover” and “Enchanted,” her voice high and winsome; she sneered through sarcastic electro-pop tracks like “Look What You Made Me Do,” “You Need to Calm Down” and “The Man,” the last a sly commentary on restrictive gender roles that played out on a set designed to look like an office.

Accompanied by a band that included four backing vocalists, she burrowed into the intricate bedroom-folk sounds of her twin pandemic LPs, “ Folklore ” and “ Evermore ,” singing “Invisible String” from atop a mock-up of a mossy woodland cabin. Flanked by dancers, she went big and shiny for the one-two punch of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” into “I Knew You Were Trouble,” then went even bigger and shinier for the section of the show devoted to “1989,” her most exuberant release. “ Midnights ,” which broke a number of sales and streaming records when it came out in October, got one of the night’s longest sequences as Swift strung together seven of its bleary R&B-adjacent cuts, including “Lavender Haze,” “Midnight Rain” and the Hot 100-topping “Anti-Hero”; in each she smeared the edges of her voice, using it for texture as much as for narrative.

A woman sings and plays acoustic guitar onstage

Her photo-album approach inevitably played to the nostalgia of an audience that’s grown up with Swift. “Ready to go back to high school with me?” she asked before a sweetly strummy rendition of “You Belong With Me,” from 2008’s “Fearless” — one of the early LPs she’s lately remade in a shrewd campaign to reclaim the financial rewards of music whose ownership has changed hands a couple of times. Later, she reached even further into history for the lovesick “Tim McGraw,” her first single as a teenage country phenom, which she performed here on an upright piano painted with flowers. (The piano was on a small secondary stage at the end of a runway that jutted out onto the stadium floor, where Swift also did an unplugged-style take on “Mirrorball” in a slot she said would feature a different song every night of the tour.)

At its best, though, Friday’s show complicated the emotional unbottling involved in the performance of a great pop song. The concert’s highlight came at almost precisely the midpoint in a passionately determined run through the epic 10-minute version of Swift’s song “All Too Well” that arrived in 2021 on her rerecording of “Red.” On the album, “All Too Well” sifts carefully through the wreckage of a youthful romantic relationship with the wisdom of a few years’ worth of hindsight. Yet on stage here, slashing at an acoustic guitar while dressed in a glittering floor-length robe that gave her an almost wizardly vibe, she made the song into a kind of treatise on youth itself — on the illusions one allows oneself to buy into in the pursuit of a happiness that never lasts.

Talk about a lot going on at the moment: She’d promised a trip back through her past and delivered a dismantling of it instead.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour opening weekend: Tears, joy and ‘therapy’

Fans descend on Glendale, Ariz. (a.k.a. ‘Swift City’) for a long-awaited chance to commune with their pop icon, revel in her lyrics and express their true selves

taylor swift tour kickoff

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Taylor Swift had endless choices when deciding how to kick off her first concert tour in nearly five years on Friday night, a captivating spectacle that stretched over three hours and included 44 songs. After starting with a brief snippet of “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince,” the namesake song to her 2020 Netflix documentary , she launched directly into “Cruel Summer.”

As the track’s hazy opening synth-pop beats blasted through State Farm Stadium, you could hear the gasps, with simultaneous shouts of “OH MY GOD!” barely heard above the ecstatic mayhem (and in some cases, heaving sobs) among the nearly 70,000 in attendance. Swift, resplendent in a shimmering bejeweled silver bodysuit and matching knee-high boots, beamed at the crowd, because she knew exactly what she was doing.

Swift fans believe that, in a parallel universe, “Cruel Summer” (the yearning anthem on her 2019 album, “Lover,” about a steamy and toxic relationship, with a chorus that demands you sing-scream along) was destined to be the song of the summer of 2020, released as a single as Swift planned to embark on a series of festivals called Lover Fest. Obviously, the global bummer of 2020 happened instead. Yet the obsession with “Cruel Summer” persisted, especially because Swift had never performed it live.

Analysis | Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour opener: A complete recap of all 44 songs

So this wasn’t just a song. For many, this was a stinging, subconscious reminder of how much we lost and what could have been. It was also a moment of pure, delirious joy — not only because of the thrill of hearing a beloved song live for the first time, but also because it’s clear that even one of the most powerful celebrities on the planet had felt all of that, too. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that at the top of her first show on her Eras Tour — 52 dates of sold-out stadiums — she wanted to pick up right where she’d left off before the world shut down.

“I don’t know how to process all of this and the way that it’s making me feel right now,” Swift told the stadium when the song was over, her voice slightly shaking. Later, she added: “I’m really, really, really overwhelmed, and I’m trying to keep it together all night.”

T rying to keep it together” has rarely applied to the 33-year-old Swift, who, nearing the end of a second decade as a professional musician, has ascended to a rare, glorified status as a once-in-a-generation pop star. She has no chill. After rising to fame with songs about her awkward, unpopular teen years, she now embraces cringe and earnestness. That’s part of the draw for her legion of fans, who see her as one of them. After Ticketmaster melted down during sales for the Eras Tour, the parent company’s chairman went on the defensive by pointing to the extreme demand, claiming that the number of people trying to buy tickets “could have filled 900 stadiums.”

The Swifties shelled out hundreds — sometimes thousands — of dollars for tickets and travel and descended on Glendale this weekend, determined to make the often harrowing process of ticket-buying a distant memory. The Phoenix suburb, which recently hosted the Super Bowl, could hardly contain its excitement. The mayor declared it would temporarily change its name to “Swift City,” and electronic signs on the highway encouraged safe driving with Swift puns: “CUT OFF? DON’T GET BAD BLOOD . SHAKE IT OFF .” “RECKLESS DRIVING? YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN .”

But that was nothing compared to the electric energy surrounding the stadium. To be a Taylor Swift fan is to learn to master the clues and secret messages that could be embedded in every lyric, public comment and social media post, no matter how opaque. To be a Taylor Swift fan is to always come ready, which includes devising the perfect outfit to wear to a concert, with unlimited options bestowed by the singer herself, who chose a tour theme, “eras,” that celebrates her past and present.

Being in the crowd was like being in a force field where all pretenses are gone; Swift’s music covers the spectrum of bubble-gum pop (which she refers to as “glitter gel pen lyrics”) to deep introspective poetry, and her concerts are a place where you can dance or cry to either. Swift has laid bare her own insecurities and emotions over 10 studio albums and more than 200 songs. Here, in her presence and among one another, fans become their truest selves.

Scanning the crowd, you could see countless sequins and bejeweled skirts and jackets, an homage to the “1989” era. There were also dark blue dresses with stars for “Midnights”; red heart sunglasses, a black bowler hat and a T-shirt reading, “Not a lot going on at the moment,” a shout-out to the “22” music video; dark lipstick and black leotards as a tribute to “Reputation”; lyrics scribbled down people’s arms in marker, something Swift used to do before every concert; and No. 13 painted on hands, another former Swift tradition, from when she was starting out as a country star.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Giacomo Benavides Ubierna (@giacomobeub)

“My inspiration is the Red Tour, one of Taylor’s iconic outfits, and I just wanted to re-create it,” said Giacomo Benavides, a 26-year-old content creator dressed like a circus ringleader who traveled from Peru for the show.

Some were even more specific: Olivia Jackter of Tucson, 26, wore a traffic-light get-up that displayed the phrase “I don’t know,” referring to a lyric from the song “Death By a Thousand Cuts.” Would non-Swifties understand it? Of course not. Did that matter? Of course not. “This was going to be my costume for Lover Fest. I’ve been waiting for this for years,” Jackter said.

A group of 20-something women attached plastic Easter eggs to white T-shirts with photos of some of their favorite “Easter eggs” and hints that Swift has dropped over the years. One man dressed in a cat costume as Swift’s newest pet, Benjamin. Two women whooped excitedly when they walked by each other in a line for food and saw that they wore matching floral dresses similar to what Swift wore to the 2021 Grammy Awards.

Another popular theme was “All Too Well,” the searing breakup ballad that recently got a second life when Swift released the updated 10-minute version . Lots of fans wore outfits displaying those lyrics. Ivan Hernandez of Phoenix sported a blue T-shirt that read, “Where’s the scarf, Jake?” — a reference to the song’s supposed subject, Swift’s ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal, and the lyric that suggests that he swiped her scarf.

“[My son] wanted to go to the concert, and he said, ‘Let’s wear outfits,’ and I was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to wear an outlandish outfit,’” said Hernandez, 46, whose 13-year-old son, Eli, was wearing an Eras Tour shirt they had bought at the merchandise stand Saturday afternoon before Swift’s second show. “So I just went online and started looking for something about ‘All Too Well,’ and this is the one that came up.”

Swift, who misses nothing, praised everyone for their effort from the stage.

“You have really outdone yourselves, guys. The way that you decided to show up to this concert, you really, really decided to show up,” she said, noting that she saw people dressed as mirror balls (from the song “Mirrorball”); willow trees (from “Willow”); and “sexy babies” (from “Anti-Hero” — and too complicated to explain). “I have seen, like, really amazing, specific visual representations of lyrics or weird online inside jokes that we have.”

“I was thinking about tonight and how special this is,” she added. “You have led me to believe, by you being here, that it’s special for you, too, so it’s really nice that it’s mutual.”

S wift’s unusually close relationship with her fans started back when she was a country artist , a genre in which singers are supposed to think of listeners as their peers. Swift always went a step beyond, chatting with fans on Myspace back before Nashville executives even knew what that was, and that connection has continued to this day.

In concert, Swift referred to the journey that she and her fans have taken together, like they’re a family. (The “four new members of the family,” she said, are the four albums she has released since her last tour.) She made no secret of the fact that she monitors fans’ social media activity, even dryly noting that her 2020 record “Evermore,” is “an album I absolutely love, despite what some of you say on TikTok.” (People on the platform are convinced that “Evermore” is her “forgotten child.”)

This is all why her bond with her fandom remains so strong. She connected early on to fellow teenage girls who inferred from society that their crushes and feelings and dreams were silly, only to find someone in Swift who took them seriously and who could articulate, in songwriting, what they didn’t even know they were feeling.

“By the time she’s done living through something and writing about it and releasing music, I’m living through it,” said Briana McReynolds, 32, of Phoenix, who showed up in a T-shirt covered in lyrics, as well as a purple streak in her hair to represent “Lavender Haze,” Swift’s latest single. Her best friend, Chris, accompanied her to the concert as an “emotional support Swiftie.” (“I’m doing my best,” he said.)

“She’s just accidentally kind of written the soundtrack for my life,” McReynolds said. “She’s matured with all of us, or we’ve matured with her. So no matter what age I am, she can totally sing my heart.”

Caitlin O’Connor, 32, of San Diego came to the show with her mom; they have seen every Swift tour together for the last 15 years, and O’Connor makes sure to go multiple times.

“You don’t need therapy; you need Taylor Swift songs,” O’Connor said. Swift’s concerts, she explained, “are my happy place, and there’s nothing else like it. It’s the most natural high you could get in your whole life.” On her arm, she has a tattoo of lyrics from Swift’s “Treacherous”: “All we are is skin and bone, trained to get along.”

“I love that line. Really, at the core, everybody is human,” she said. “And that’s also the thing with Taylor Swift concerts: Everybody is really nice. … You bond over something immediately.”

Swift is highly aware of the world she’s built, and she doesn’t shy away from it. In a surprisingly direct admission, while introducing the song “Mirrorball,” from her 2020 album “Folklore” during an acoustic set, she reiterated to the crowd just how intensely she’s missed them over the past several years.

“I was thinking about how one of the songs that I wrote with you in mind during the pandemic was one of the first songs I wrote on ‘Folklore,’ and it was me writing about how badly I craved the connection that I feel from the care that you have directed my way,” she said. “I was trying to think of a sort of eloquent way to say that I love you and I need your attention all the time.”

The stadium quieted as she strummed and sang.

“I’ve never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try; I’m still on that trapeze, I’m still trying everything to keep you looking at me. ’Cause I’m a mirror ball. … I’ll show you every version of yourself tonight.”

And although she asked the members of the crowd for their attention, she didn’t need to; it was already there, and it always will be.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attend U.S. Open championship match together

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in the audience

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are capping off a whirlwind weekend in New York with a trip to Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open championship match.

Swift and Kelce were  filmed arriving to the stadium  Sept. 8 before the match officially started at 2 p.m. ET. The championship will see No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy take on Taylor Fritz, the  first American to make the final since 2006.

Swift and Kelce appeared in match in red and white. The singer wore a red gingham dress, sunglasses and her classic red lip, while the football star wore a white shirt, cream cardigan and a red and green striped bucket hat.

Before the start of the tournament, the No. 1-rated female singles player, Iga Swiatek, said  she hopes Swift and Kelce would make an appearance at the U.S. Open.  But the Olympic bronze medalist was bested by American  Jessica Pegula  in the quarterfinals. Pegula went on to  compete in the championship Sept. 7,  where she lost to Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.

Swift’s appearance at the U.S. Open comes amid a tour break for the singer. The European leg of her “Eras Tour” wrapped in August. She will next perform in three cities in the U.S. before heading to Canada. The record-breaking tour will  officially end in December,  she’s confirmed.

So far, Swift seems to be spending her break at athletic events, both cheering for and with her boyfriend. Swift attended the NFL kickoff game Sept. 5 at Arrowhead Stadium to witness the  Chiefs beat the Ravens 27-20.

The next day, Swift and Kelce were spotted dining out in New York before  attending a wedding Sept. 7.

Taylor Swift headlines celebrity rush at U.S. Open men's final

taylor swift tour kickoff

NEW YORK - Taylor Swift headlined the list of celebrities present at the U.S. Open final on Sunday, as another Taylor - Fritz - aimed to end a 21-year American men's major drought on Arthur Ashe Stadium against Italian top seed Jannik Sinner.

Sports, television, movie and music stars have flocked to Flushing Meadows over the past fortnight, occupying luxury boxes and sipping on the venue's famous $23 "Honey Deuce" cocktails and the celebrities were back in full force for Sunday's finale.

But few stars shine brighter in American pop culture than Swift, who kicked off a spending frenzy in the NFL ticket resale market last season just by showing up to watch her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, play.

Kelce and Swift arrived hand-in-hand for the match and sat with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, ignoring the first Sunday of the NFL season in favour of tennis after the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 in their Thursday opener.

"In a tennis era," tournament organisers wrote on social media platform X to accompany a video of the couple at Flushing Meadows. Swift has been breaking records around the world with her Eras Tour.

Former U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick, the last American man to claim the title, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jon Bon Jovi were also spotted among the crowd. Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey turned up wearing a red, white and blue bandana.

Friends star Courteney Cox waved to fans wearing sunglasses and the same blue U.S. Open giveaway hat donned by scores of others in the Ashe Stadium seats.

Today Show hosts Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Jenna Bush Hager as well as nighttime talk show host Stephen Colbert were also in attendance on a cool but sunny afternoon.

Vogue editor Anna Wintour, seated beside actor Eddie Redmayne, was back in the stands after taking in the women's championship match a day earlier, when Olympic gold medal sprinter Noah Lyles and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton were also among the spectators. REUTERS
