How To Travel Amsterdam to Frankfurt

frankfurt

Frankfurt in Germany is one of Europe’s major financial hubs and is located approximately 350km south-east from Amsterdam.

Are you looking to travel between Amsterdam and Frankfurt? Let’s consider the transport options between the 2 cities by train, air and bus.

As Germany and the Netherlands are members of the Schengen Zone agreement you do not normally need to go through a passport control check when travelling between Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

1. Amsterdam-Frankfurt by Train (recommended)

Without doubt, the best way to travel between Amsterdam and Frankfurt is by rail. This gives you centre-to-centre convenience, no check-in or security lines and a regular direct train service. It can be easily booked via the NS International site (euros) or the Trainline site here (multi-currencies) with prices starting at only €38 one-way.

Modern ICE International trains (ICE3M BR 406 variants) run up to 6x daily from Amsterdam Central station to Frankfurt airport and Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof. The journey takes just 3 hours 55 minutes . The train is jointly operated by DB (German Railways) and NS (Dutch Railways).

Amsterdam-Frankfurt train ticket fares

Booking for Amsterdam-Frankfurt rail fares open 180 days before travel.

The cheapest one-way ticket price for Amsterdam-Frankfurt in 2nd class is €38. This is the Supersparpreis Europa fare which is only valid on the particular departure time selected and is non-changeable/non-refundable. It can be easily found if booking 2-6 months in advance.

ice train at frankfurt (main) station

There are more flexible fares available. The Sparpreis Europa fare from €45 one-way is changeable/refundable for a fee and includes a City ticket for Frankfurt public transport. The fully-flexible Flexpreis fares start from €126 one-way and also includes the City ticket component.

You may also find some cheaper Amsterdam-Frankfurt fares (from €28) using regional trains but we would always recommend the direct ICE service.

1st class Amsterdam-Frankfurt one-way fares start from €50 (the non-changeable Supersparpreis Europa 1st class ), from €59 ( Sparpreis Europa 1st class , changeable/refundable for a fee) and from €222 ( Flexpreis full-flex fare).

ICE International (Amsterdam-Frankfurt) train seats

2nd class on the ICE has a 2-2 seat configuration. There is a special 6 seat family compartment (2nd class) available in carriage 25/35 with adjacent baby changing facilities. A 2nd class seat reservation costs €4.90 extra and is highly recommended as the train can get busy.

Luggage racks on the ICE trains can accommodate small and medium size bags. In the middle of standard 2nd class carriages you can also find a larger luggage rack.

ice train 2nd class seats

1st class fares include seat reservation as standard, with seating in a 1-2 configuration. 1st class carriages can also have a smaller ‘quiet zone’ compartments.

There are also the ‘Panorama lounge’ cabins (1st and 2nd class) at the front and rear of the trains which can have brilliant views of the driver’s seat through a glass screen – though the driver can elect to frost the glass.

ice train first class seats

In our opinion, both the 1st and 2nd class seats on the ICE International are extremely comfortable.

Free WiFi is available to all passengers and there are power outlets accessible from each seat.

The ICE trains have a Bordbistro restaurant-bar carriage (number 26/36) serving hot meals at extra charge. 1st class passengers can order and get served at their seats.

Those with a full-flex 1st class ticket can access the DB lounge at Frankfurt Main station; any international 1st class ticket holders can access the NS International lounge at Amsterdam Central.

With reasonable prices, a quick journey time, comfort and convenience we highly recommend the ICE train for travel between Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

Top airlines flying from Amsterdam to Frankfurt am Main

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

We left one hour late because of technical difficulties. The economy comfort seats are great for the price. The crew was mediocre, they do not provide a pleasant experience, they just deliver food and drinks and give orders, not very amicable, no service and hospitality focus.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

One of the vstewardeses wanted to bump me of the plane for absolutely nothing. There is CCTV in the plane ans everything can be verified. Very disappointing , you all will see, o other 5 years and the passangers who does not smile to flight attendent will be bumped off...

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

Mostly fine. Minor delays departing and arriving. Quite a cramped plane, not so much as regards legroom but very narrow seats. Quiet nice food. Non-working USB charger. Flight attendants were helpful but not particularly proactive — one had to work to get their attention (but all was fine once they notice you), very Dutch style:)

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

The plane was clean and the staff was friendly. Food and drinks as expected on international flights. The entertainment system was old style, with a pullout controller, and selections not as extensive as on other flights.

Regular 3 across coach seats in “business” just empty middle seat

Staff was rude in business class. Luggage was damaged and nothing was done about it airlines.

Boston Logan is a crummy airport - signage is terrible or lacking in areas. Boarding seemed to be a free for all and with all the different airlines speaking, you couldn't tell who was supposed to be where and when. Plain and simple, airlines should board from the back of the plane to the front. Also someone was sitting in my seat. By the time that was figured out, I had to place my overhead behind me which made de-planing more difficult. Logan is not Lufthansa's fault so that is not on them, Boarding is on them! Still, overall it was a Good Experience flying with Lufthansa. This is not my first flight with them...

Overall, the flight was comfortable without any serious issues. Transit through Frankfurt airport was a little confusing, but not too difficult if you follow the signs

Staff disappeared after dinner service until breakfast, no help with beds, no help running to our gate to catch connection cause flight was late, our luggage didn’t make it, took over 24 hours to get luggage to hotel, no compensation!!

Everything was good except food. I believe there is room for improvement

Houston to Porto flight delayed landing made us miss our connection. Tried to get on standby for the next flight and even though the lady knew we wouldn’t be able to get on it and she sent us down there. We sat there three hours and then we’re told there’s no way you’re getting on this flight. So we had to go to customer service and ended up having to spend the night in Frankfurt and missed a whole day of our vacation in Porto

My wife was struggling to walk, due to a very sore leg, and they had wheelchairs and pleasant assistants at every step of the way, whisking us around long lines at TSA, Passport Control, Boarding, and Customs. Even a special Boarding Bus that lifted us right up to door level on the airplane out on the tarmac. Slightly less effective arriving in Detroit, where we had to walk down the stairway, walk to a bus, and find our way into the terminal, where the assistance started up again. Meals, drinks and snacks were excellent, as was the variety of entertainment, with nice screens right on the backs of the seats. Complimentary blankets and pillows for everyone. Pleasant, considerate flight attendants, generous with the drinks and snacks. All-around class act.

Flight delayed for 90 minutes with no explanation, seat very uncomfortable almost like there was no cushion in it, no power at seat for 10 hour flight, had to use plug in headphones for entertainment system. Crew was great

Lufthansa flights were great. United flight from houston to Frankfurt had very small seats with almost no space

Prices of reservation Amsterdam-Frankfurt

From the 1st of June till September, a seat reservation is obligatory on the ICEs between Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Normally, I can make a (first class) reservation at the website of the DB for € 5,90. But last week, when making a reservation in that period from Bern-Amsterdam, I suddenly had to pay double, € 11,80. Did anyone else experience this? How could this be prevented? It seems like a very healthy business model to me, making a reservation obligatory and then doubling the prices… For now, I just buy reservations for the leg Frankfurt-Amsterdam, but that means I’m screwed when the connection does’t work, which happens frequently.

DB struggles to sell standalone mandatory reservations. Until this year it was simply impossible and now it seem to be possible but as you said they sell them separately...

Better to book through ÖBB: 3€ per train. There's no seat map though. You have 3 min after payment to cancel the order if the seats don't please you.

I mean it doesn't matter whether you book Frankfurt - Amsterdam or Bern - Frankfurt - Amsterdam. In which way are you screwed?

My prefered itinerary is Basel - Cologne (buffer) - Amsterdam.

Did you proceed to the payment page?

There seems to be an error showing the double price on the first page when a train with temporary mandatory reservation is involved, but when you proceed to the payment page, the price is correct. 4,90 EUR in 2nd class and 5,90 EUR in 1st class.

Useful information if you're flying to Frankfurt

Hola Frankfurt!

Book one of our cheap flights to Frankfurt and you'll discover a city that's rich in every way. Located on the banks of the River Main, one of its hallmarks is the imposing skyline of modern high-rise buildings. The main one is the Commerzbank Tower by world-renowned Norman Foster, the tallest skyscraper in Germany and the second tallest in Europe. Frankfurt is also home to monuments and architectural ensembles dating back several hundreds of years, although due to bomb damage in the Second World War most of them have recently been rebuilt. The most outstanding attractions are the Gothic cathedral of Saint Bartholomew , St Paul's Church (seat in 1848 of the first democratically elected German parliament), and the Römer , a picturesque mediaeval building.

Unlike other neighbourhoods, Sachsenhausen in the city centre survived the bombings unscathed and today is one of the liveliest places in Frankfurt, with multiple restaurants and bars where you can taste the famous sausages and fine ciders, like the Zum Gemalten Haus and the Wagner. If you prefer cultural tourism, then you have a choice. Most of Frankfurt's museums are located on the banks of the river in what is called the Museumsufer . You'll find the Städel , one of the most important museums in Germany, with works by Rembrandt, Boticelli and Degas, the German Film Museum and Goethe's birthplace .

Outrage in Amsterdam as Russian TV Celebrities Take the Stage

A MSTERDAM — A live event headlined by two Russian television celebrities has sparked controversy in the Netherlands, with critics decrying the presence of what they call Russian propagandists on European stages during Moscow’s war on Ukraine.

Veteran Channel One host Vladimir Pozner and late-night talk show host Ivan Urgant’s European tour, called “The Travels of Pozner and Urgant,” kicked off in Amsterdam on Tuesday and will be followed by stops in Zurich, Berlin and Frankfurt.

The show is described as an evening with the two men, who co-hosted several travel shows, as they reflect on stories from their trips around the world.

Though billed as an apolitical event, politics has dominated all discussion of it.

Critics have slammed the Amsterdam theater for hosting “Russian propagandists” and allowing them to profit by performing in Europe, calling it a “stab in the back” of the tens of thousands of Ukrainians who fled to the Netherlands because of Moscow’s invasion.

Others say that banning events based on politics would be stooping to the level of the Kremlin, which has silenced independent journalists, activists and artists inside Russia.

Around 25 protesters, several of whom wore Ukrainian flags around their shoulders, stood outside Theater Amsterdam in the rain as attendees arrived, shouting slogans like “Shame on you,” “Russians go home,” “Russia is a terrorist state” and “Russian propaganda kills.”

“I think you can hear why,” said Anna, a young woman from Ukraine who has been living in the Netherlands for two years, when asked why she was at the protest.

“We have to stop… Russian propaganda because it's dangerous,” she said. “It's important not only for Ukraine, but it's important for everybody. Because it's a really abusive country.”

In the theater lobby before the sold-out show, some attendees took photos of protesters through the glass windows. Others could be heard discussing the news over glasses of sparkling wine.

“I was surprised at how our [fellow attendees] reacted — they looked away [from the protesters]. I looked right at them,” said Alisa, a Russian emigre who was going to the show with her friend.

“Many of the people who came to the show do not support the war, and we have a negative view of the war, of course,” she said. “The aggression in the crowd was frightening. We had fingers pointed at us and such. It's good that there are police here.”

On the first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Urgant, who is often likened to U.S. late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, posted a black square to his Instagram account with the caption “Fear and pain. No to war.”

Although his show was taken off the air almost immediately afterward, he has since remained silent about the war. He did not respond to The Moscow Times’ request for comment.

Pozner, meanwhile, rose to fame in the West during the Cold War for his television appearances where he would explain the Soviet Union’s views and policies, a role he would later describe as “propaganda.”

His interview show on Channel One, which was watched by millions and often compared to “Larry King Live,” stopped airing after the invasion of Ukraine. He later said this was a move by the channel to make room for coverage of the war.

In a 2016 debate with Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, Pozner said: “Yes, censorship exists [in Russia]. And I accepted it. I could have slammed the door [closed the show] and done nothing at all. But I believe that I am doing something useful for society. I'm making people think.”

Though he has neither criticized nor supported the war in public, Pozner has suggested that the West bore responsibility for Moscow’s invasion because it refused Russia’s demand to block Ukraine’s path to NATO membership.

When asked about the protesters outside the venue, Pozner told The Moscow Times that it was “their right” to express their opinion but declined to comment further.

Theater Amsterdam declined to comment for this story, instead referring The Moscow Times to a May 24 statement published on its LinkedIn page.

In its statement, the theater said it “stands for freedom of speech, creative expression and a safe environment for everyone who embraces the arts.”

“These performers have indicated that their program has nothing to do with the war and want to share their performance in an atmosphere of peace and freedom,” the theater said, noting that its staff had received threats and intimidation over the event.

Inside the theater sat Olga — a woman from Lviv, a Ukrainian city near the Polish border described by the Kremlin and Russian propagandists as an alleged hub of “Russophobia” — who moved to Amsterdam because of the war.

Speaking in Russian, she told The Moscow Times that she felt “embarrassed” to be at the event.

“I've been following Urgant and Pozner for about 15 years and I wanted to see them in person,” she said.

“Only here did I find out that Pozner supported the war,” she continued. “If I had known [beforehand], there's no way I would have come.”
