Traffic camera/CCTV services
We use traffic cameras to assist with the management of traffic on the motorway and trunk road network in England
National Highways and traffic cameras
We own almost 4000 traffic cameras which have been used to assist with the management of traffic on the trunk road and motorway network in England for nearly 30 years. Wales and Scotland have separate operations.
The traffic cameras are usually mounted on 12m high masts on the grass verge or on overhead gantries but are often inconspicuous because they are not painted with high visibility paint, primarily because they are not used for speed enforcement.
Primary users
The primary users of the traffic cameras are our Regional and National Traffic Operations Centre operators. The operators are able to move and zoom the cameras to monitor and manage congestion and incidents. The cameras give a bird’s eye view of what is happening which helps the operator to decide on the support needed.
Traffic camera images
We've developed policies and a technical interface that will allow stakeholders to view the images in a format suitable for their needs. The mechanism by which stakeholders are linked to the traffic cameras is known as the VIH (Video Information Highway).
An innovative partnering approach with media organisations and web hosts has been implemented, allowing nominated third parties or ‘media partners’ to access and disseminate still and live images to the public through their own traffic news bulletins and websites.
Who can access traffic camera images?
Everybody can access traffic camera images through the Traffic England website .
Requesting CCTV/traffic camera footage after an incident
All requests for traffic camera/CCTV footage need to be made within 5 days of an incident occurring, as footage is only kept for 7 days on our systems.
To request footage, we will need:
- the exact date and time of the incident
- the exact location (for example, between junctions 1 and 2; 2 miles before junction 4)
- the direction of travel (for example, northbound; clockwise)
- the lane were you travelling in
- your vehicle details (make, model, colour, vehicle registration number)
- the other vehicle(s) involved (any details or description you may have)
- the nature of the incident
- any incident/reference numbers if you were issued one (for example, by the police)
When requesting footage, please consider:
- cameras are installed to view the overall traffic conditions and not individual vehicles
- there is limited likelihood of a camera pointing in the right direction at the right time
- the level of zoom affects whether registration details are visible
Please send your request, with the required information, to [email protected] or alternatively call 0300 123 5000.
If footage is available, you will need to provide 2 forms of ID before images are released to you.
Please also read our CCTV Privacy Notice .

Brilliant Tool!
(As per title) for roads and journeys you do often, which for me, it’s invaluable for Argyll to Edinburgh twice a month. However for Coventry 4 times a year, it is impossible to know if some roads affect me or not. If the app could be incorporated with Apple Maps perhaps, I’m sure people like myself would pay good money for that. Also, search... nothing I ever search is found? M8? Nope. Edinburgh? Nope. ??? Nevertheless Top App. And worth the money, so cough up & don’t be stingy!
Saves a lot of stress
Always good on a long journey to see where jams start with up to date camera pictures not outdated radio reports. However one major complaint- there are always dozens of often minor incidents reported on London roads but little or nothing elsewhere. We have 2 major trunk roads in Essex which run from the east coast to London (A13and A127)Both cross and join the M25. Also the A12 which connects with the M25 runs through Essex. On several occasions serious hold ups have occurred on these roads and no mention has been made or marked on the map. I accept this may not be the fault of the developer but I would like an explanation. Otherwise great app! Bob
Developer Response ,
Hi, thanks for your feedback. The app is dependent on the quality of the data feeds, in this case the one from Highways England. I can't explain why some incidents would not be reported to Highways England, unless they appeared in the app a little later as there may be a lag between the incident happening and it being reported through the Highways England system. You often see lots of incidents for London as TfL provides a more comprehensive feed of traffic incidents. I'm afraid all of this is outside my control, my ap can only show the information that the various traffic/road agencies provide. Cheers, Andy
Must get app
For a professional driver this is a no brainer purchase. As we know the the uk the matrix overhead road information signs are a useful as a chocolate fireguard, this app give you real time cameras and if you refresh the cameras icon you can instantly see if the road shed is busy or closed. All ready saved me hours in useless diversions I didn’t need to go on because I could see the road had been open regardless of the matrix signs. Buy you won’t regret it. Put the time in and save the cameras in your favourites icon for the roads you mostly use in order it’s like seeing into the future. Paul

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M4
As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M4 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.
We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.
Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.
The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!
We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M4 in England will be reinstated shortly. Please check back.
If the images are not updating, please check back later.
