FAQ About Travel Insurance to Uganda

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Uganda. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Uganda can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Uganda Travel Insurance Requirements

Squaremouth’s Uganda Travel Insurance Recommendations

Known for wildlife consisting of everything from mountain gorillas to lions, Uganda offers unrivaled experiences for adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. Before making the long journey to the eastern African nation, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared and protected for what lies ahead.

While Uganda has no mandatory travel insurance requirements for foreign visitors, it is strongly recommended by travel experts due to high trip costs, the potential for expensive medical treatment, and safety concerns while traveling.

If you’re planning a trip to Uganda, Squaremouth recommends a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes the following benefits:

Cancellation Coverage for Uganda

From flights and accommodations to remote wildlife expeditions, traveling to Uganda can be a costly endeavor. In 2022, Squaremouth data indicates that the average trip to Uganda cost travelers more than $8,150.

Having a travel insurance policy with cancellation coverage is a smart way to protect that significant trip investment. With the Trip Cancellation benefit, travelers can be reimbursed for all of their non-refundable trip expenses if they fall ill, get injured, or experience other covered disruptions prior to departing for their trip.

Policies with Trip Cancellation also include Trip Interruption coverage, which can provide travelers reimbursement if unexpected events cause them to return home from their trip early. This benefit applies to travelers that have already departed for their trip and have unused, nonrefundable trip costs.

The most common covered reasons include unforeseen illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member. Other covered cancellation reasons may also include terrorism, inclement weather, or a natural disaster, among others.

Uganda Terrorism Coverage

As of January 18, 2023, due to recent terrorist incidents in the country, the U.S Department of State has issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory for Uganda, urging travelers to reconsider their travel plan.

Most travel insurance policies include Terrorism coverage within the Trip Cancellation benefit. Travelers with this coverage can cancel their trip or cut their trip short in the event of a terrorist attack in Uganda, as long as they purchased a policy before the attack occurred.

Uganda Travel Medical Insurance

Tourism to Uganda is mainly focused on the country’s unique landscape and wildlife. Seeing Uganda’s main attractions usually involves trekking to remote areas of the country, far from hospitals and treatment facilities. To be on the safe side, it’s recommended to have a policy with high medical coverage.

Travel medical coverage is broken down into two main components: Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation .

The Emergency Medical benefit covers the costs of medical treatment in the event of an illness or injury during their trip. If a traveler gets sick or injured while in Uganda, this benefit can cover physician services, ambulance expenses, and other costs of treatment. Given the potential high costs of treatment while in Uganda, we recommend a policy of at least $100,000 in Emergency Medical coverage.

The Medical Evacuation benefit can transport a traveler to the nearest adequate hospital in the event of a medical emergency. For example, if a traveler experiences an emergency while exploring one of Uganda’s famous national parks, this benefit can cover the costs of an evacuation. Due to the potentially significant costs of an emergency evacuation, we recommend Uganda visitors find a policy with at least $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

Uganda Delay Coverage

For many tourists, getting to Uganda usually involves a long, multi-leg journey. For this reason, it’s important travelers find a policy that includes coverage in the event their travel schedule is interrupted by lengthy delays.

With the Travel Delay benefit, travelers can get reimbursed the cost of food and accommodations expenses incurred during a delay. A policy’s Missed Connection benefit can also reimburse travelers if a delay causes travelers to miss a connecting flight on route to or from their destination.

To be eligible for delay coverage, a delay must reach a certain length, which can typically range from 3-12 hours. The best policies for travel delay will have lower delay requirements and higher coverage limits, with some policies reimbursing up to $2,000 per traveler.

In addition, most comprehensive travel insurance policies come with both Baggage Delay coverage and Baggage & Personal Items Loss protection. Both benefits will offer reimbursement to travelers if their baggage gets damaged, delayed, or lost at any point during their trip.

Healthcare for Brits in Uganda

It’s a good idea for UK citizens to check with NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre) at least 2 months before their trip to Uganda.

They offer vaccine recommendations and the latest news on outbreaks and other health risks as well as factsheets that contain useful information for staying healthy during your travel.

Note that the government of Uganda does not offer free medical care for Brits in Uganda. This means that without travel insurance, you’ll have to pay for medicines, doctor and hospital fees out of pocket. And hospitals or medical centres may want to see proof of ability to pay upfront.

As you might imagine, these unforeseen expenses can be significant, which is why it’s important to ensure that you get sufficient travel insurance before you leave on your trip.

If you take prescription medication for an existing health condition, the NHS recommends that it’s also a good idea to get in touch with the embassy of Uganda for assurance that you can safely bring those medicines with you inside the country.

You’d also want to make sure that you bring a note from your doctor verifying that you need the medicine to manage an existing health condition.

You can check the NHS website for advice on pertinent vaccinations and health checks for more information.

What About Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

  • Many medical conditions covered

Over 75/Serious Medical

  • Cancer, Heart Conditions, Diabetes, Stroke, Epilepsy and many more
  • Up to a high level of severity and even a terminal prognosis
  • chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Mental health conditions

As is usual with UK travel insurance, you need to disclose any pre-existing medical condition you have to your policy provider, unless you have been told specifically by your insurer that you do not need to declare that condition.

While this means that you may have to pay more to obtain travel insurance for Uganda – although not all pre-existing conditions result in an increase in premium- , it’s better than falling ill during your travel (related to your pre-existing medical condition) and being denied coverage.

Insurance providers typically offer free screenings for thousands of medical conditions and provide ample coverage to offset the cost of repatriation and medical care while abroad.

While it’s unlikely that you’ll get injured or fall victim to a crime if you confine your activities to safer regions in the country, it’s best not to take any chances and obtain a suitable single or multi-trip travel insurance policy before your departure.

Make sure you disclose all pre-existing medical conditions that you are required to do so when applying for travel insurance for Uganda. Doing so would help ensure that you don’t run into any problems should you need to file a claim.

The human body is an incredible work of evolution and as such there are plenty of things that can go wrong in both the short and long term.

For that reason it can often be difficult to understand what constitutes a medical condition that you have to declare to your travel insurance provider.

However, in general, the insurers’ questions will tend to follow the same general lines, such as:

Have/are you or anyone in your party:

  • taken any prescribed medication, or received any medical treatment in the last 2 years;
  • attended a medical practitioner’s surgery, or hospital or clinic (out-patient or in-patient) in the last two years;
  • awaiting medical treatment or investigation;
  • been diagnosed by a medical practitioner as suffering from a terminal illness.

All medical conditions you have must be disclosed as well as any previous medical conditions if they could have an impact on your current health.

So, while it is vitally important to declare what you need to declare, your policy provider will let you know if your pre-existing condition is not a factor for your trip cover.

For example, here at Emerald Life, we don’t require clients to disclose their HIV status for as long as they meet the following conditions:

  • They have been on antiviral treatment for no less than 3 months.
  • They have not been advised to switch to a different/new type of antiviral regimen.
  • If their CD4 count is above 350 or they have been advised by a doctor that CD4 monitoring is not necessary.
  • They have an undetectable viral load or less than 50ppm.

Note that non-declarable conditions can vary from one policy provider to another. It’s ultimately up to the insurance company to decide which pre-existing medical conditions are exempted from disclosure and set pertinent conditions for the exemption. However, Emerald leads the field on some of these.

What to Look For When Shopping for Uganda Travel Insurance

At this point, you probably already have an idea of just how important it is to obtain Uganda travel insurance before you travel to Uganda (whether multiple or a single trip cover).

This begs the questions — what factors do you need to keep in mind before buying travel insurance?

Well, the answer doesn’t need to be all that complicated. After all, the purpose of travel insurance is to give you peace of mind while you enjoy the sights and wonders that Uganda has to offer. For that, you can focus on a few essential factors:

Repatriation and Medical Cover

  • Medical Up to £10 Million

The most important part of any travel insurance policy is emergency medical expenses cover. Typically ranging from £5 million to £10 million – the higher in our case – this covers your costs if you become ill or injured abroad and require medical treatment.

Medical expenses should include repatriation cover so that if your condition means you have to return to the UK urgently then there is cover for transporting you along with any necessary medical equipment and staff. Unsurprisingly, these costs can be staggering.

Before you leave for Uganda, it’s important to ensure that your travel insurance policy offers enough coverage to pay for emergency medical services and repatriation back to the UK.

Here at Emerald Life, we provide coverage of up to £10,000,000 with our Uganda travel insurance.

Travel Insurance Uganda Cancellation and Curtailment Cover

Silver - Up To £1000

Gold - Up To £3000

Platinum - Up To £7500

Silver - Not Covered

Gold - Up To £2000

Platinum - Up To £5000

If you are ill or injured before you travel then you may have to cancel your trip. Some policies will also cover you if a close relative is ill or injured, or your home is burgled, and you have to cancel as a result.

If you expect to make multiple trips to Uganda in a given year, you can probably secure a better deal if you sign up for annual multi-trip travel insurance.

An annual policy will help you save time since you don’t have to reapply before every departure. More importantly, annual multi-trip insurance cost is bound to be cheaper than obtaining numerous single trip policies over the course of a year.

Uganda Travel Insurance Luggage Cover

Luggage can get lost during transit, and if that happens, it’ll be a major inconvenience in your travel plans. That’s why you need travel insurance that will reimburse you for the trouble should it happen.

For luggage delays of more than 24 hours, Emerald Life offers baggage cover which serves as compensation for the inconvenience and covers the cost of essential replacement clothing and toiletries if your baggage is delayed on your outward journey, up to the amount specified

If the luggage is lost (missing for more than 21 days), you’ll be paid the amount stipulated in the luggage cover for the accidental loss, damage or theft of your baggage and personal effects, up to the amount specified.

While it can be tempting when buying travel insurance to just look at the final price, it is important that you check any excesses you have to pay.

That is because some cheap policies will have very high excesses which means any claims could be very expensive despite having the insurance. Sometimes excesses are so high it might not even be worth claiming.

Therefore, make sure you buy a Uganda travel insurance policy that balances a good price with reasonable excesses. Also, there may be other exclusions that reduce the premium precisely because payouts are limited. If you need travel insurance, then it is advisable to make sure that you have the best cover you can afford.

Most travel insurance policies will also include different excesses for different types of claims and you can find these in your policy documentation, but generally the medical excess is the most significant.

Do You Need Insurance to Travel to Uganda?

It can be argued that the real question is — can you afford not to have Uganda travel insurance when you leave for Uganda?

Again, tourists have no free access to healthcare services when visiting the country, and private medical care can be costly.

Uganda travel insurance should cover the cost of medical treatment if you fall ill or become injured during your travel.

While no one expects to get sick or become injured while holidaying in Uganda, accidents can happen. If things go south, it’s always helpful to know that you have travel insurance to rely on.

Britam unveils self service portals for insurance, investment management

Britam unveils self service portals for insurance, investment management

Britam Uganda is set to transform the insurance and financial services landscape with the introduction of “My Britam,” a suite of self-service portals.

This initiative is being launched under the campaign titled “Take Control,” designed to empower clients and partners to manage their insurance and investments independently and efficiently.

This campaign emphasizes the autonomy and convenience that “My Britam” brings to clients and partners, allowing them to take control of their insurance and financial needs.

“Our portals represent a significant leap forward in our digital transformation journey, especially in an insurance industry typically slow to embrace change and innovation. We are excited about the positive impact this will have on our clients' and partners' ability to manage their insurance needs," Said Allan Mafabi, Chief Executive Officer Britam Insurance Company Ltd.

‘’In the long run, this initiative will support insurance as a key enabler of financial inclusion on a day-to-day basis. This is a testament to us putting clients first as we propose to safeguard their dreams and aspirations.’’

The launch of both an investment and insurance portal marks a pivotal development in Britam Uganda’s commitment to digital transformation and customer empowerment.

By offering tools that enable clients and partners to seamlessly manage their insurance and investments, Britam is not only enhancing user satisfaction but also demonstrating a holistic approach to improving the financial services industry.

According to Ronald Kasolo, General Manager - Britam Asset Managers, the introduction of the 'My Britam' portals reflects their unwavering commitment to innovation and customer centricity, which are fundamental pillars of their company strategy.

‘’By empowering our clients, we are enhancing their experience and driving a more efficient and transparent financial services industry in Uganda. With 'My Britam,' customers have the freedom to invest at their convenience and maintain total control over their finances.” Kasolo said

Britam's Insurance Portals empowers clients and partners to take control of their travel plans by allowing them to purchase insurance, manage policies, file claims, and receive instant feedback all through a centralized online platform.

This is the first phase of a broader rollout that will soon include Motor Insurance and other products, offering a comprehensive management experience for all types of insurance services. Banks and brokers will also be able to self-serve, improving the customer experience for both them and their shared clients.

The investment portal enables their clients as well to take control of their investment portfolios by providing access to investment statements, top-up options, withdrawal capabilities, and tools for detailed performance analysis. This portal simplifies the investment management process and enhances our clients' decision-making capabilities.
