Twenty One Pilots ‘Emotional Roadshow’ Tour

  • By: PLSN Staff
  • March 11, 2017

PLSN caught a look at Twenty One Pilots’ ongoing “Emotional Roadshow” tour, the band’s biggest tour to date. With a design that started just two short years ago, playing in club/theater size venues, the band has grown to play to sold out arenas, and their design has grown with it. We spoke to production, lighting and set designer Daniel Slezinger and lighting director/co-designer Tyler “Shap” Shapard about the current trek.

Daniel Slezinger Production, Lighting & Set Designer

“Scalability was always in our thoughts — how to approach such a fast growing tour and still be able to keep an underlying production theme and show structure…Using custom LED video carts with lighting built into the carts, which weren’t dependent on rigging, gave the tour its own unique appearance, but more importantly, we could always have the content that [vocalist] Tyler Joseph wanted and still had lights in our show, even when we couldn’t hang anything in the air. This also helped us get away from the truss tower look when we still didn’t have that much product on the road yet. Once the tour grew to mostly arenas, we kept the carts but doubled the LED resolution, and then expanded the lighting and video concept without ever missing a beat and keeping the same show structure for the current album cycle.

“I love bouncing ideas around with Tyler Shapard. He’s a fast learner and a great guy all around. When he’s traveling, we try to keep up with each other over Skype and phone; I also travel to a good handful of the shows. We pass drawings and concepts back and forth until things make sense and [the design] is realistic — with the budget, and the amount of space we have in the trucks. Once Tyler joins me in previz, I usually work at night, when I have fewer distractions. Because Tyler programs during the day, it becomes a 24-hour operation and we become more efficient with the time we have to dial in the show elements. In total I spent 29 days in pre-viz for the ‘Emotional Roadshow.’ Sometimes we have as many as a thousand cues in one song. When we added production for the run in 2017, Tyler and I spent another week in previz, then a few days together in tech rehearsal before the tour started.”

Over 100 Robe Pointes were used in the design. Photo by Steve Jennings

Robe fixtures are a big part of the show, says Slezinger

“We fell in love with the Robe Pointes, so there are more of them than anything. We weren’t sure if they would keep up in the arena compared to the club shows, but they do very well, especially paired up with the BMFL’s and Robe 1200’s. On the video side, everything is Winvision Air 9, except the carts and the B-stage video floor are standard Win 9; everything is in factory frames.”

The tour is using Concert Investor for their lighting, video and rigging. Concert Investor, founded in 2007, is a production agency that works with both growing and established artists as well as production and technology vendors all around the world.

“Justin [Roddick, partner and co-founder of Concert Investor] and I try to build teams of people and companies that enjoy working together to be creative and efficient so that we can support and streamline the artist’s production needs globally.

“More than any light or video panel or special FX gag, the fans do bring the energy that we all feel at a Twenty One Pilots show. We’re all thankful for the amazing songs Tyler [Joseph] has written that allows so many to connect and come together. It’s been an amazing story and journey with these guys, and it still feels like the beginning!”

Tyler “Shap” Shapard Lighting Director & Co-Designer

“When we first got together we needed a foundation for the album that we could build off of because we knew the rooms were getting bigger.

“Daniel and I used Skype to keep in touch while I was overseas, and when I came home for 8-10 days, we would schedule a programming session or meet with vendors, and then I would leave again and it would be back to Skype. There was no ‘off time’ leading up to and through this album for anyone.

“David Perkins with VER’s previz division was a big help to the success we had in the tours. He had some crazy deadline to supply us with complete previz rigs, and he made it happen! We usually plan some overlap to show each other what we have done and talk about what we need to do that day. We believe this gives us the ability to be creative in our own ways, and by bringing both of our different programming styles together, it makes our show more dynamic. It’s really a well-oiled machine.

“The six set carts were purchased as this foundation. They fit through a standard doorway and can crank up to 15 feet high. We also had an upstage truss and the ‘V’ truss flown. So after designing that, we did the first tour, and it was great, but it’s always fun and really challenging to add more to a finished show. The questions you ask yourself are, ‘What do I remove? What stays? If I take this element out, does it compromise the concept of the song or show?’

“So after the first tour, which was clubs and theaters, we went to amphitheaters and small-to-big arenas. We added a bunch of truss in the air [and] basically doubled all our lighting counts and tripled our budget. We also added an Audience truss [i.e., the “X”] in the room, projection I-Mag, and a B-stage, complete with a video floor and 40 lights surrounding it. Now we knew we could not do the B-stage everywhere, so we had to program all the B-stage songs also on the main stage. Which I think has been seen a handful of times.

“It’s actually some of the best programming I think we have ever done, but that’s how that goes, I guess. Plus, the ‘X’ had to be programmed in a way it wasn’t noticeable if it wasn’t there when we did amphitheaters. Then on this last leg, we added the audience dasher trusses and moved the I-Mag to portrait and brought it close to the show. We changed it to LED to match the rest of my product. It came out very powerful, and I think it looks great.

Summing up…

“It’s been amazing! I have gotten to see and do things I would never have imagined, and now it’s about time for a break and to do it all over again on the next album cycle.”

Review: For Twenty One Pilots, Time to Shine on a Stage of Dreams

twenty one pilots emotional roadshow tour

By Caryn Ganz

  • Aug. 11, 2016

Twenty One Pilots is not known for subtlety, so the signals to the crowd Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, where the duo played the first of two sold-out shows to close the United States leg of its Emotional Roadshow tour, were bold.

They were there when the singer and pianist Tyler Joseph announced that performing at the arena was a dream realized, adding, “We did it,” and then took more than a minute to define “We.” (In amateur video of the speech posted to YouTube, a fan’s gentle sobs are audible as he speaks.) And when the drummer Josh Dun played a small kit on a platform held aloft by the fans crammed into the pit. And when Mr. Joseph ended the show, as he usually does, telling the crowd, “We are Twenty One Pilots … and so are you.”

Dedicated young fans have quietly made Twenty One Pilots the biggest band of 2016. And Twenty One Pilots have quietly become a gifted arena act.

The band from Columbus, Ohio, has released four albums (three with its current lineup; Mr. Dun joined in 2011, and it has been a duo ever since). Its most recent LP, “Blurryface,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart when it arrived in March 2015 and has recently been holding strong at No. 3 . Sort of a concept album about alienation, it sounds like spinning a radio dial — just about everything but guitar rock, though it throbs with the undercurrents of emotional pop-punk. Mr. Joseph sings and raps, occasionally pounding at a piano or plunking a ukulele or a bass live, and Mr. Dun bashes the drums and triggers their intricate backing tracks.

In terms of tone and theatricality, there were plenty of allusions — intentional or not — to crowd-movers like Coldplay, My Chemical Romance and Calvin Harris, but the show’s momentum was built on Mr. Joseph and Mr. Dun’s vision, charm and athleticism. For the opener, “Heavydirtysoul,” Mr. Joseph, wearing a suit, tie and ski mask, rapped crisply into a microphone dangling from the ceiling and sang sweetly into a mic attached to a stand. Then he collapsed to the ground as though shot, reviving in time to strike superhero poses atop risers that he glided across with the grace of a gymnast.

The mood shifts, and costume changes, came fast and furious: electronic thump (“Hometown”), brooding anthems (“ Heathens ” and the angsty smash “Stressed Out”), bouncy piano pop (“The Judge”), exuberant releases (“Trees”) along with masks, knitted hats and sunglasses that Mr. Joseph hid behind and then flamboyantly removed. An interlude dipped into grimy horror, with a menacing voice-over and dark visuals. But Mr. Joseph re-emerged in a flowered shirt, ukulele in hand, furiously strumming the Violent Femmes-like “We Don’t Believe What’s on TV.”

A too-long set of older songs on a B stage in the rear of the arena felt half-considered compared to the elaborate gestures the band pulled off up front. And a brief run of covers — Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” House of Pain’s “Jump Around” — demonstrated little other than the band’s unsarcastic appreciation for all kinds of music.

Much has been made of the group’s genre agnosticism (and the fact that its members were raised in restrictive religious homes). There was so much everything on display at the Garden — a barrage of moods and sounds, a clever video production, a powerful light show — that the real excitement was spotting what was missing: guitars, profanity and irony.

Every Twenty One Pilots song has an explosion, musical or spiritual. In four years, Mr. Joseph and Mr. Dun have figured out how to build an arena spectacle that convinces audiences the detonator lies in their hands.

Twenty One Pilots’ Management Discusses VER’s Support of Emotional Roadshow Tour with Light & Sound America

twenty one pilots emotional roadshow tour

Twenty One Pilots Production/Lighting Designer Daniel Slezinger of Concert Investor recently sat down with Light & Sound America to discuss the Emotional Roadshow Tour . The tour faced the challenge of having a lighting design that needed to look big in venues and arenas, while also fitting within a small bus trailer.

“Tyler Joseph [lead singer of Twenty One Pilots] told us he wanted to be engulfed by video,” commented Slezinger. During a meeting with VER Nashville’s Michael Drew the idea of placing the LED and lighting inside six compact carts could reduce space; something Drew designed previously with the help of Accurate Staging for Little Big Town. The full video and lighting rig included a 48′-wide by 16′-high 9mm WinVision LED wall, as well as four Pointes, six Nitro 510C , six CuePix WW2 and two B-EYE s attached to each cut-out.

When it came to Audio, Front-House engineer Shane Baradiau collaborated with VER’s Kenny Sellars to support a Meyer Lyon PA, controlled by a DigiCo SD5 .  “Shane and I work closely to create the sound of the show,” Sellars says. “He knows the music and the big picture, whereas I focus on the little things. I may mention the bass isn’t translating well in the room and ask for a specific frequency to be taken out. This allows Shane to push and pull, creating a dynamic show, while I fine-tune the edges. It’s all about working together to understand the sound and the room as a whole.”

Daneil Slezinger added “Brent Dannen, executive director, audio, at VER, has been a great audio partner of Concert Investor, helping make sure the sound gear and crew is solid. Tony Macre , who runs VER Nashville, has played a key role since the beginning, helping us scale all production from clubs to arenas.”

VER supports the Twenty One Pilots Emotional Roadshow tour with audio, lighting and video.

Twenty One Pilots Soars on Emotional Roadshow Tour

Posted by Ilana Berghash | Sep 4, 2016 | A & E | 1

Twenty One Pilots Soars on Emotional Roadshow Tour

While few consider themselves dancers, there are some situations during which you cannot help but lose your inhibitions and dance. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the entire audience was bitten by the jitterbug at the Twenty One Pilots concert at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth. It seemed as though all audience members became dancing fools, not caring what they looked like or who was watching. The band’s passion was contagious, and made for one of the most engaging live shows I’ve attended.

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Twenty One Pilots has reached international recognition. You cannot turn on the radio without hearing one of their many hits, whether it be “Stressed Out,” “Ride” or their newest single “Heathens.” Despite Twenty One Pilots’ skyrocketing popularity and success, the two best friends have stayed true to their humble roots. This is evident in their engagement with fans throughout the show. Their Duluth performance solidified their status as extremely talented yet unpretentious musicians, a rarity in the entertainment realm.

Joseph and Dun came alive in their performances. The Georgia stop of their Emotional Roadshow World Tour celebrated the duo’s entire discography, highlighting both old and new songs. Joseph and Dun paid homage to their beginnings with an 11-minute medley of some of their oldest songs, including “The Pantaloon,” “Fall Away” and “Johnny Boy.” Despite the extensive set list, they remained kinetic and lively throughout, as if each song was the beginning of a fresh performance. At one point, Joseph sang a verse to the audience, which responded with the following verse, while Dun backflipped off of Joseph’s piano. Electricity seemed to thrum through every person in the arena, matching the performers’ vivacity. In particular, Dun’s energy was remarkable. The drums became an extension of his body — he jumped and bounced as he hit each drum and cymbal. Throughout their performance, both artists entered the general admission pit and fans held them up as Dun banged on a mobile drumset and Joseph sang his heart out.

Not only did the duo express this energy throughout the show, but the performance was reflective of Twenty One Pilots’ ideals. A key theme was embracing what sets one apart from the rest — quirks, oddities and simple weirdness. The audience, especially the pit, maintained a friendly and almost familial environment. Fans sang to each other, hugged and held up their hands to make the trademark symbol of Twenty One Pilots. The visuals of the show captured this flawlessly — unique video footage matched a light show and left the audience in awe.

After witnessing Joseph and Dun perform, it is no wonder they consider themselves a live band. The two’s infectious energy was mirrored by their fans, who went to extraordinary lengths to show their devotion. Members of this “family” (as they refer to themselves) replicated Joseph and Dun’s style in both garb and spirit. Some smudged red paint under their eyes to match Dun’s signature look, while others coated their hands and necks with black paint to represent Blurryface, a character created by Joseph that symbolizes the insecurities he shares with society.

With a combination of confetti, fog and lighting that matched the theme of their songs, it is evident that Twenty One Pilots wanted the performance to be the best that it could be. The two worked tirelessly to transport the audience into their world. Twenty One Pilots reminds us of what music is all about — the experience of listening and engaging with society, on individual and collective levels. Not only have Joseph and Dun made a special mark on the music industry, they have breathed new life into the otherwise overdone yet underwhelming arena of live music.

Throughout the concert, I forgot that I was watching two strangers perform. Joseph and Dun connected with their audience on an intensely intimate level. The secret ingredient that sets Twenty One Pilots apart is a shared passion — one that belongs to the duo and their fans. As long as their fans were expressing themselves and experiencing the music, they could dance however they liked, no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed. Twenty One Pilots reminded us of what music is all about — unapologetic fun.
