Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

You don’t have to travel to Europe to see turrets, gate houses and other architectural features reminiscent of the Middle Ages

Hearst Castle.jpg

You don’t have to be royalty to visit a castle. Here in the United States numerous castles are open for exploration, and while they may not date back to Medieval times, their elaborate architectural characteristics—turrets, moats, gate houses, drawbridges and other features commonly associated with castles found in England and elsewhere in Europe—are equally impressive. One even has a fire-breathing dragon!

Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California

Hearst

From 1919 to 1947, William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan built a castle fit for a king—or in this case, a publishing magnate. Located on 250,000 acres of land equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles, the idea for Hearst Castle began as a “modest dwelling” but eventually grew to a multi-million-dollar project that included multiple buildings, including Casa Grande, a palatial home featuring 38 bedrooms, 42, bathrooms and 14 sitting rooms. But perhaps the most iconic parts of the property are the two swimming pools . The first, Neptune Pool, stretches 104 feet in length and holds 345,000 gallons of water while the indoor Roman Pool features intricate mosaics inspired by ancient Roman baths. The castle now hosts a variety of themed tours, including evening tours where visitors an experience the property during twilight.

Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina

Biltmore

It’s easy to see why this is considered one of the most iconic estates in the United States. With a square footage measuring more than 178,000 square feet, the Biltmore Estate is considered the largest privately owned home in the United States. Construction of the sprawling chateau was completed in 1895 for then-owner George Washington Vanderbilt II, a successful art collector and an heir to the prominent Vanderbilt family. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, the finished estate contains 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces, as well as prominently appointed turrets and pitched roofs, two features common in French Renaissance architecture, which Hunt looked to for inspiration. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead designed the property’s collection of gardens (you may recognize his name as the designer of New York City’s Central Park and Prospect Park). More than a century later, the estate is still abuzz with activity and hosts a calendar of events that includes self-guided and audio tours, carriage rides around the property, exhibitions (currently on view is “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition”), wine tastings at the onsite winery and more.

Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii

Iolani

Long before Hawaii became the 50th state, it was ruled by King Kalakaua and later his sister, Queen Lili'uokalani , and Iolani Palace served as the monarchy’s home base. Completed in 1879, the 37,100-square-foot palace is noteworthy for its unique style of architecture, known as American Florentine , and considered the only example of its kind in the world, combining the square symmetric style of Italian Renaissance architecture popular in Italy with Hawaiian touches, including the incorporation of local koa wood in the construction. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, the sprawling property served as a government building for some 80 years. Then, beginning in the 1970s, Iolani Palace was restored to its royal glory, with looted furnishings from Queen Lili'uokalani's era returning to their rightful place in recent years. Now a National Historic Landmark and a museum, the palace offers both guided and self-led audio tours, including visits to the Imprisonment Room, where Queen Lili'uokalani served an eight-month imprisonment for allegedly having “knowledge of a counterrevolutionary attempt” during her reign, and the Throne Room, a gold-and-crimson-adorned room that showcases the monarchy’s two thrones.

Bishop Castle, Rye, Colorado

Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

When Jim Bishop began building a summer cottage in 1969, on a two-and-a-half acre plot of forested land he purchased ten years earlier at the age of 15, little did he know he would wind up building a castle. With the help of his father, Willard, the pair gathered nearby rocks and, without using a single blueprint, set out to create a stone cottage of epic proportions. By 1995, the massive structure towered 165 feet in height, nearly as tall as a 16-story building. Today, the stone castle draws crowds from around the world to marvel at the creation. Bishop’s creativity can be seen throughout the property. How many castles have a fire-breathing dragon hovering 80 feet in the air constructed of repurposed stainless-steel warming plates, after all? Despite a number of setbacks, including a cancer diagnosis several years back, Bishop, now in his 70s, continues to greet visitors to Bishop Castle looking to explore its stained-glass ballroom and scale the castle’s spiraling staircase to reach the top of a turret that offers sweeping views in every direction far above the tree line.

Smithsonian Castle, Washington, D.C.

Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

A number of iconic buildings border the National Mall, but one sticks out from the rest. Completed in 1855, the Smithsonian Institution Building (often called the Castle) serves as home base for the Smithsonian Institution and houses its information center. The Castle—constructed in the Norman style of architecture popular in the 12th century using red sandstone quarried from Seneca Creek, Maryland— is the work of architect James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. Renwick's original cardboard model of the Castle is on display inside the building. Visitors can also pay their respects to James Smithson , the British scientist who bequeathed his estate to the United States for the establishment of an institution dedicated to "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," at his crypt near the Castle's north entrance.

Bannerman Castle, Beacon, New York

Bannerman

As a successful munitions dealer, businessman Francis Bannerman VI needed adequate space to store the bounty of equipment used during the Spanish-American War of 1898 that he had purchased at military auctions. During a canoeing trip in 1900, he happened upon just the spot to store his vast collection: Pollepol Island. Located roughly 60 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River, the island’s seclusion and distance from the city made it an appealing location for a storage facility to house cannons, boxes of gun powder, uniforms, scrap metal and other military paraphernalia. However, while much of the building did reach completion, construction of Bannerman Castle was abandoned upon Bannerman’s death in 1918. An explosion in 1920 destroyed the island’s powder house, leaving behind structural damage to the castle that can still be seen today. Over time, much of the remaining structure has crumbled due to the passage of time and weather, but the castle’s side wall still proudly proclaims “Bannerman’s Island Arsenal.” Kayak and guided walking tours of the island remain popular activities for city dwellers looking for an urban escape.

Hearst Castle, California

visit a castle near me

High on a hilltop overlooking San Simeon, California , Hearst Castle was built between 1919 and 1947 – according to designs by noted architect Julia Morgan – for newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. He nicknamed the estate La Cuesta Encantada (the Enchanted Hill), and it comprises four buildings, 165 rooms and 127 acres (51ha) of terraced gardens. The Casa del Mar guesthouse has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, while the gothic study in the main building of Hearst Castle features a vaulted Spanish ceiling dating back to the 14th century.

Biltmore Estate, North Carolina

visit a castle near me

In the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Asheville, North Carolina, the Biltmore Estate took six years to build, beginning in 1889 after George Vanderbilt visited the area and became enchanted by its beauty. Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the 250-room French Renaissance château, while acclaimed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted envisioned the grounds surrounding the castle, including the 15-acre (6ha) Azalea Garden, home to some of the finest native azaleas in the nation. Today, the estate has a vineyard and winery, producing award-winning wines, and offers tours of the château, including the stately banquet hall and bowling alley.

Boldt Castle, New York

visit a castle near me

This Rhineland-inspired castle is on a tiny isle in the Thousand Islands region in Upstate New York , which was a playground for the rich and famous in its day. Hotel magnate George C Boldt began building the castle in 1900 for him and his beloved wife, Louise, to enjoy as a summer home. Sadly, Louise died months before Boldt Castle was completed, and a devastated George abruptly halted its construction. The castle sat unoccupied at the mercy of the elements for more than 70 years until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired it and restored it to its current glory. The island estate includes the 120-room castle, a drawbridge and the pretty Alster Tower. The authority runs tours of the castle and Heart Island, which it occupies.

The Breakers, Rhode Island

visit a castle near me

Another Vanderbilt family creation designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, the Breakers is one of the most striking summer homes in Newport, built in the late 19th century when the picturesque Rhode Island coastal town was the playground for the wealthiest families in America. Taking inspiration from the Italian Renaissance palaces of 16th-century Genoa and Turin, Hunt designed the 70-room mansion to include the grand dining room, with its dramatic freestanding columns and gilded cornice, and drafted contemporary talents such as Austrian-American sculptor Karl Bitter to create relief sculptures. It’s open to visitors year-round and is owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County.

1892 Bishop’s Palace, Texas

visit a castle near me

Also known as Gresham’s House, the 1892 Bishop’s Palace is in the East End Historic District in Galveston . It was built in the late 19th century for attorney and entrepreneur Walter Gresham and his family. Frequently cited by architectural historians as one of the most significant structures in the USA, the 1892 Bishop’s Palace was designed by famed local architect Nicholas J Clayton, who built the Victorian-style mansion from steel and stone – a sturdy mixture that endured the Great Galveston hurricane that destroyed much of the city. The mansion’s opulent interior features a dramatic mahogany stairwell, many stained-glass windows and decorative wood carvings. You can look around yourself or see areas usually closed to the public with a basement-to-attic tour.

Bannerman Castle, New York

visit a castle near me

A tiny island 60mi (97km) or so up the Hudson River from New York City is the setting for the ruins of Bannerman Castle. Built in the early 20th century as an arsenal by Scottish-American munitions merchant Francis Bannerman, the castle was designed to resemble Medieval Scottish fortresses. Following Bannerman’s death in 1918, the structure fell into disrepair, with much of it destroyed by a fire that broke out in 1969. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust oversees the island and offers summertime island tours. It also hosts events, including barbecue picnics and concerts.

Castello do Amorosa, California

visit a castle near me

In the northern reaches of Napa Valley , California, Castello di Amorosa can be deceiving, like many castles in the US; while it looks like a 13th-century castle straight out of Tuscany, it actually opened its doors in 2007 after a 15-year construction period. Designed by owner and fourth-generation winemaker Dario Sattui as a winery, the castle is surrounded by acres of vineyards producing award-winning Italian-style wines. Featuring 107 rooms, most of which are used for winemaking, it includes a drawbridge, a great hall with replica Italian frescoes, and even a dungeon and torture chamber.

Fonthill Castle, Pennsylvania

visit a castle near me

Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was the former home of archaeologist and ceramicist Henry Chapman Mercer. Designed by Mercer and constructed between 1908 and 1912 to showcase his extensive collection of tiles and prints, it’s a pastiche of Medieval, gothic and Byzantine styles and comprises 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces and more than 200 windows; it became a museum following his death in 1930. On the same grounds as Fonthill Castle is the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, built by Mercer in 1912 and where many of the tiles on display at Fonthill were made.

Iolani Palace, Hawaii

visit a castle near me

Iolani Palace, the only official royal residence on US soil, was built in 1882 in downtown Honolulu by King Kalakaua to strengthen the former Kingdom of Hawaii’s prestige as a modern nation overseas. When the US overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the palace served as the capitol building until it underwent extensive renovation and reopened as a museum in 1978. Inspired by European palaces, it’s said to be the only example of American Florentine architecture – a mixture of Italian Renaissance and native Hawaiian architectural styles. It’s seen as a cultural center in Hawaii, and specialty tours are available, including a White Glove Tour looking at treasures from the staterooms to the palace attic.

Lyndhurst Mansion, New York

visit a castle near me

On the edge of the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, the Lyndhurst Mansion is the creation of acclaimed architect Alexander Jackson Davis, who built it in 1838. The Gothic Revival building is one of the finest castles in America and has had several noteworthy residents since its construction, including New York City mayor William S Paulding Jr and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. Tours of the mansion – including its art gallery, home to paintings such as The Madonna of the Roses by French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau – are available on Fridays and weekends.

Thornewood Castle, Washington

visit a castle near me

Though built in the early 20th century, Thornewood Castle – on the edges of American Lake in Lakewood , Washington – dates back much further. Chester Thorne, a prominent local banker and developer, dreamed of building a Tudor Gothic home, and after buying a 400-year-old English manor, he had it painstakingly dismantled, transported and reconstructed with the help of architect Kirtland Kelsey Cutter. Now an inn, Thornewood Castle offers guests access to the estate’s private dock and lakeside beach and the beautiful sunken “secret garden” designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted.

Hammond Castle, Massachusetts

visit a castle near me

Inspired by his time living in England as a child and falling in love with the castles in the area, American inventor John Hays Hammond Jr built the beautiful Hammond Castle between 1926 and 1929 to act as his home and laboratory. Constructed from a mix of local stone and various Roman, Medieval and Renaissance artefacts Hammond had collected during his travels to Europe, the castle overlooks the scenic Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts and is now a museum. Today, you can tour its enchanting rooms, such as the unique inner courtyard partly made from Medieval storefronts that Hammond found on a trip to France and brought back to the US.

Few, if any, libraries have the look and history like that of the Brumback Castle Library. The exterior of the building was created with a combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles with its turreted towers and Ludowici tile roof. Supported by the Brumback family, the completed library was dedicated and opened to the public in early 1901 as the first tax-supported library in the country.

You can enjoy the exterior architecture of the Brumback Library Castle at any time and the library is open for visitors daily, Monday through Saturday.

Franklin Castle

Franklin Castle Tiedemann House Cleveland

Franklin Castle (also known as Tiedemann House) has inspired countless ghost stories that have evolved into urban legends over the years. Some have referred to the castle as the most haunted house in all of Ohio with stories of unexplained voices and ghost sightings. The Victorian-era property sat vacant for years after it experienced a fire in 1999 until it was purchased in 2011 by a European couple who have been working to restore it.

In March 2017, Franklin Castle was featured in season 1 (episode 3) of the reality TV series “Paranormal Lockdown”. If you’d like to learn more about Franklin Castle, its truths, history, and mysteries, you can find the book written by two Cleveland locals, Haunted Franklin Castle, at Amazon.com. Unfortunately, the private property is not open for tours, but you can drive by to see the exterior of the castle anytime.

Glamorgan Castle

Glamorgan Castle Alliance Ohio

This grand Vermont marble mansion was originally built as a residence for Col. William Henry Morgan and his family in 1904. After many lives as an Elks lodge and the headquarters for a machining business, Glamorgan Castle currently serves as the central administration building for Alliance City Schools.

The castle sits on 20.5 acres of land and although the outside looks like an ancient castle, the inside was designed for comfort in a combination of styles including Greek columns, a grand staircase with a circular balcony, carved wood, Renaissance-style tapestries, and a Japanese breakfast room with bamboo trim and teakwood flooring.

Guided public tours of the property are offered on most Friday afternoons, lasting about an hour, and include a number of stairs making it challenging for visitors with physical limitations. Private tours can also be arranged by appointment through their website.

Admission is a per person donation (cash or check only!); children 6 and under free. All of the donations go towards renovation of the mansion.

Grizer Castle

Grizer Castle Whipple Ohio

While this medieval-style castle looks as though it’s been around for more than 4,000 years, the construction of Grizer Castle began in 2014. Sitting atop one of the town’s highest points in a vast 80 acres of beautiful grounds, the castle is currently still under construction but is expected to open to the public in the spring of 2020.

When completed, owner Bill Grizer envisions his Ohio castle to be a location for year-round festivals and entertainment with its dungeon, library, and honeymoon suite. Since he was a young boy, Grizer had always dreamed of living in a castle and after turning his family home into a magnificent 15th-century castle, he decided to create another one – Grizer Castle – to accommodate guests and hold events and parties where anyone can experience “the enchanted medieval ages.”

Schwartz Castle

visit a castle near me

Although a bit tricky to find, those who have taken pictures of its turreted style say it’s worth seeing, even if only from the outside. Located in German Village the home was built by Frederick William Schwartz in the 1800s to look like an ancient castle with a turret of windows that can be seen through the village.

The legend of the castle is that Schwartz, a German Immigrant and pharmacist, after building it for his fiancée (who broke the engagement), became insane and took to odd behaviors and built secret passageways into his home.

Today the property has been broken into several apartments.  Tours are not available, but you can rent the incredible penthouse apartment for about $6,000 per month where you might see Schwartz himself who is rumored to climb the outside ladder to the top of the structure and wander through his underground tunnels!

Squire’s Castle

Squire's Castle - Cleveland

A registered national landmark, Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills is not actually a “castle,” but rather the ruins of the gatehouse of a castle that was never constructed. Built with local siltstone, Fergus B. Squire built the gatehouse for his family with two upper floors, a kitchen, a breakfast porch, and a basement in about 1897.

Today, only the shell of it remains, and is a popular site for weddings, hikers, and castle enthusiasts on the grounds of the Cleveland Metro Parks in the stunning North Chagrin Reservation.

The Castle Inn

The Castle Inn Circleville Ohio

Originally this amazing mansion was built as the home for Samuel T. Ruggles and his family in 1895. With the rumor of being haunted and history including a real “murder mystery” unsolved since 1976, the castle was featured on “Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal” on the A&E Network.

Today, the mansion has been transformed into a unique Victorian-style bed and breakfast complete with heart-shaped Jacuzzis suites and modern luxuries. It has become popularly known for its monthly “Murder Mystery” events where the guests are invited to dress up in period clothing and participate as characters in the game.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

Stan Hywet - Akron Ohio

Built in the early 1900s for F. A. Seiberling, founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, this 64,500 square ft mansion and estate are nothing short of amazing. With 65 rooms, a conservatory, a gate lodge, and several formal gardens it is one of the largest homes in the country and well worth the drive to visit.

Although it’s not officially a castle, it is full of history, beauty, and charm that offers several tour options including a “nooks and crannies” tour. You can spend an entire day on the property basking in the beauty of the gardens and butterfly exhibit after your tour or go out to enjoy their long list of special events including activities for scouts, car shows, and arts festivals.
