The Visit NC Farms App is designed to connect the dots within each community across North Carolina. With maps, lists, and search functions, users can find farms, farmers markets, and local restaurants with foods and activities that interest them, all in their own backyard. The app is expanding statewide, with your community recently joining in.

This app isn’t just for farms! With eight categories, including, farms & fisheries, pick your own, farmers markets, local food & drink, shop local, farm stays & lodging, tours & trails, and special events. You can be listed in one category or multiple categories. If your business falls into one or more of these categories, there’s a place for you in the app!

The Visit NC Farms App is a statewide effort. The N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services launched the Visit NC Farms app in 2018 as a pilot program. Today more than 75 communities and four state farmers markets are active in the app. With the help of the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, the initiative is expanding statewide to connect millions of residents and visitors with local farms & fisheries, local food & drink, farmers markets & u-pick, value-added through local shops, farm stays & lodging, tours & trails and special agricultural events across the state to include your county/region. Our goal is to have all 100 counties represented and attract visitors to our great state. Nearly 51 Million people visit North Carolina each year — and we want them to know about our great agritourism opportunities across the state and see parts of North Carolina that are off the beaten path.

Spring is here, and many people are looking forward to getting outside with family and friends in a safe environment after a year of restrictions and staying close to home. And by close to home, I mean: just in your backyard. There’s a new way to explore your region and the state and find fun things to do, exciting things to see, and good things to eat. It’s the Visit NC Farms Mobile app, and it’s available for free for your iPhone or Android smartphone.

The Visit NC Farms mobile app was developed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture to help residents and tourists alike find off-the-beaten-path destinations. Users can explore North Carolina’s beautiful countryside, find interesting farm attractions, meet friendly people, eat wonderful food, and experience rural life at its finest. Currently, about 55 NC counties and their “assets” (the term for all the farms, attractions, and businesses featured in a county) are on the map, with more in the works. County assets fall into different categories: Farms, Pick Your Own, Farmers Markets, Local Food and Drink, Shop Local, Farm Stays and Lodging, Tours & Trails, and Special Events. You can search for farms in a specific county or region, sign up for notifications of exciting news and events, find specific products (like “strawberries” or “goat cheese”), find a unique restaurant, and lots more. The object is to highlight local, unique attractions in a county to generate interest in exploring the special things North Carolina’s rural communities have to offer. Richmond County joined the Visit NC Farms project last fall as part of a 13 county cohort in the south-central district of the state. The cost of participating in the program, which involves having a listing on the app, state-wide advertising of the app, and special marketing tools, was provided through a grant from the Richmond County Tourism Development Authority, covering the cost of the program for three years.

Currently, Richmond County has about 13 “assets” listed for the county. Hopefully, most of them are familiar to people here in the county as they are all truly wonderful assets to living here! They include the Berry Patch, the Rankin Museum, Petal Pushers Greenhouse, EE Vuncannons Farm Supply, Longleaf Lodge, John’s Farm, Little River Vineyard, and Peachview Farms. Some of the county’s outstanding nature destinations are featured too, like the hiking trails at Hinson Lake, the Hitchcock Creek Blue Trail, and Camp Millstone. By downloading the app, users can explore places in their own county as well as those all over the state, and can sign up to receive notifications of events and new products and specials from participating assets. The Rockingham Farmers Market is also on the app, and will be sending out weekly notifications highlighting items that will be new to the market each week. Thanks to the grant from the RCTDA, participation in the program is free for assets during the first three years.

Richmond County currently has space for up to 25 assets, with 13 spots taken. So, we’re still looking for more assets to join Visit NC Farms Richmond County! A Qualifying Survey can help those interested in participating determine if being part of the app is right for them and their operation. An Asset survey is submitted by those who are ready to join. Information requested includes hours of operation, attractions/products sold, contact information, website, and social media contacts, etc. The form takes just a few minutes to fill out and is submitted online.

Google “Visit NC Farms” to check out the website and some of the aspects of the program. For more information or to receive the survey, contact Paige Burns Clark, county administrator for the VNCF mobile app in Richmond County at [email protected] .

Now that spring is finally here, it is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Recent surveys show many families plan to make leisure trips closer to home and to less crowded venues. I can’t think of a better way to spend some quality time outdoors than connecting with our local farms. That’s why I’m so excited to share some really great news…there is an app for that!

If you haven’t already, you need to check out the Visit NC Farms mobile app to help guide you through the discovery of some of the many neat places to visit. Whether it is educational farm tours, farmers markets, and U-pick operations, local shopping and dining, or even a farm stay, you can find it using this app. Once you download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, you are literally a click away from finding endless opportunities both near and far with contact information, pictures, and directions. Some assets even share their websites and social media contact. Using cell phone technology, navigation to farms and other destinations with the app work both when WI-FI is available, and more importantly, when offline. You can search for specific items or view asset listings in broad categories like tours, animals, farm stands, products in local stores, kid-friendly, and events for inspiration.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission helped bring this idea to reality. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center is proud to be a partner in assisting with the growing effort behind this tool to help connect our community with our rural agribusinesses, with much appreciation to Robeson County Farm Bureau for their financial support. Agriculture is our number one industry but continues to need your support. We are in the midst of strawberry season with several local vendors awaiting your visit. Many farm stands will be opening up in the coming weeks with more fresh products to choose from. We already have close to 20 assets listed on the app for Robeson County alone with much more potential ahead. You may be surprised to learn what gems we have right here in our area. From produce, fruits, local meat, wineries, ornamental plants, recreational fishing, goat yoga, alpacas, or workshops on needle felting and felted soap, you can find it right here in Robeson County. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted consumers towards buying more local products over the last year. I hope this trend will continue as we see social, economic, and environmental benefits from supporting agritourism. So go ahead and download the app to get started. Let the fun and connection to our farms begin. If you don’t see one of your favorite venues on the app, have them contact our office. For more information visit Visit NC Farms Today .

Another benefit of supporting local farms is the ability to find products you may not be able to find in a grocery store, such as certain heritage breeds or possibly a specific cut of meat. You also can purchase in bulk, allowing you to fill your freezer with a variety of meat cuts.

Union County is now offering new ways to find local farmers. The Visit NC Farms App can be downloaded for free from your app store. There you can take a look at the map to find farms near you, or you can filter and search for a specific product.

Ratings and Reviews

Very helpful.

Look forward to seeing more places added and visiting some new places

I like the app, but it crashes

I downloaded the app today, and thought I would use the app often. Bu no matter what itinerary I try to open, it crashes and closes the app. I have an Apple phone system 15.2. I will keep the app on my phone to see if a fix gets pushed out. If it fully functioned on my phone, I will definitely use it.

A great way to explore!

There are so many wonderful places in North Carolina that are worth visiting and exploring. This is a wonderful way to do so and get to know some authentic aspects of this great state.

The Visit NC Farms App is designed for farms to close to gap between local foods and customers. The app has two main user groups and they are Farms and Customers .

If you are a Farm in the app you can post photos of your farm, create events through your local Admin, add the products you sell, and link your social media pages to your listing. As a farm you can contact your local App Administrator and schedule push notifications. These are the best part about the app for the farm! All users of the app will receive push notifications directly to their mobile device based on their preferences in the app! As a farm you can notify customers on the app of sales, seasonal items in your shop, and much more.

If you are a  Customer   in the app that just means you don’t have a farm listing, but use the app on your mobile device. Customers in the app can use the search function to find local farms selling the produce they want. For example, a customer may search for “apples” within 50 miles. This request would show them all of the farms who sell fresh apples within 50 miles of them. Customers receive push notifications from farms and check them out if they are interested!

Biden, after meeting with families of officers killed in NC, says the nation is grieving with them

President Joe Biden has met privately with the families of law enforcement officers shot to death on the job in Charlotte, North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- President Joe Biden said Thursday he was praying for loved ones and all those left behind after he met privately with the families of law enforcement officers shot to death on the job. The visit came just a week after he sat down with the grieving relatives of two cops killed in upstate New York.

“The entire nation is grieving with these families," he said from his second stop of the day in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he was announcing new measures to cut lead pipes from the water supply.

Biden detoured to Charlotte for the visit that took place with little fanfare behind closed doors, as the White House wanted Biden to be seen as respecting the privacy of grieving families and avoiding the appearance of using their grief for political purposes. He also met with officers wounded during the shooting, and wished them a fast recovery.

The president took a short motorcade across the airport to the North Carolina Air National Guard base to meet the group, which included elected officials. The location was an alternative to traveling into the city and was chosen as the least taxing one for local law enforcement officers who are still reeling from the deaths but who would have a hand in securing the president's trip.

“The men and women of law enforcement, you represent the best of us,” he said from the podium at the second stop.

Once again, Biden was seeking to be an empathetic leader for a community reeling from gun violence, while also calling for stricter rules around firearms and more money for law enforcement on the front lines.

Four officers were killed this week in North Carolina, when a wanted man opened fire on a joint agency task force that had come to arrest him on a warrant for possession of a firearm as an ex-felon, and fleeing to elude capture. They were: Sam Poloche and William Elliott of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Joshua Eyer; and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks.

Four other officers were wounded in the gunfire; the suspect was killed. An AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a 40-caliber handgun and ammunition were found at the scene.

An AR-15 is among the weapons most often used in mass shootings, and it's the type of gun Biden is talking about when he says the U.S. should ban “ assault weapons.” Congress passed the most comprehensive gun control legislation in decades in 2022, after a horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. But it didn't go far enough, Biden often says.

And as he campaigns for the 2024 election , Biden has made curbing gun violence a major campaign platform, elusive to Democrats even during the Obama era, as he fends off attacks from Republican challenger Donald Trump that he is soft on crime and anti-police.

“We have to get them the resources they need to do their job,” Biden said of law enforcement. “And keep the weapons of war" out of the wrong hands.

The violence came just about two weeks after another fatal shooting of law enforcement officers in Syracuse, New York; Lieutenant Michael Hoosock and Officer Michael Jensen were killed while looking for a driver who fled a traffic stop. After his speech, Biden met relatives of both of the officers’ families.

Biden had already been scheduled to come to Syracuse to celebrate Micron Technology’s plans to build a campus of computer chip factories, but the local police union said officers were still coming to terms with the deaths and weren’t happy with the president’s trip and had hoped he would delay.

On Thursday from Wilmington, Biden announced his administration was providing states with an additional $3 billion to replace lead pipes across the country, building on $5.8 billion for water infrastructure projects around the country announced in February.

“There’s no safe level of lead exposure," he said. “None. The only way forward is to replace every lead service line that connects clean water.”

Money for the pipe replacement comes from one of the administration’s key legislative victories, the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law that Biden signed in 2021. The infrastructure law includes over $50 billion to upgrade America’s water infrastructure.

The new round of funding will help pay for projects nationwide as Biden seeks to replace all lead pipes in the country.

“We’re going to get it done,” he said.

EPA estimates that North Carolina has 370,000 lead pipes, and $76 million will go to replace them statewide. Biden also will meet with faculty and students at a Wilmington school that replaced a water fountain with high levels of lead with money from the law.

President Joe Biden to visit Wilmington this week

visit nc farms.com

President Joe Biden is set to visit Wilmington this week.

According to an email announcement Monday afternoon from the White House, "On Thursday, May 2, the President will travel to Wilmington, North Carolina, to discuss how his Investing in America agenda is rebuilding our infrastructure and creating good-paying jobs in Wilmington and across the country."

Jill Hopman, chair of the New Hanover County Democratic Party, said Biden is expected to visit the Port City to talk infrastructure and environmental issues Thursday afternoon. The exact time and location of the event has not yet been determined, Hopman said.

While Biden is seeking reelection in the November presidential election, Hopman said the anticipated stop is a presidential visit, not a campaign event.

In a statement Monday, the New Hanover County Democratic Party said, "although President Biden’s official visit is not campaign-related, it cannot come at a more-critical time during a more-critical election year in a more-critical place."

The announcement of Biden's visit comes shortly after former President Donald Trump had planned to hold a campaign event in the city, which was ultimately postponed due to weather . Trump has not yet rescheduled the event.

The last presidential visit to Wilmington was by Trump in 2020, when he named Wilmington the nation's first World War II Heritage City at Battleship North Carolina.

Biden last visited North Carolina with Vice President Kamala Harris on March 26, with the two stopping in Raleigh to talk health care.

Biden in Wilmington: From arrival to traffic, here's more about the president's visit

visit nc farms.com

President Joe Biden will head to Wilmington on Thursday.

According to a release from The White House, he will arrive at Wilmington International Airport and then head to the Wilmington Convention Center to give remarks on infrastructure and the environment.

Here's what you need to know about the president's upcoming visit and what to expect for Biden's arrival in the Port City.

When will Biden arrive?

The timeline of around 3 p.m. has shifted a bit due to Biden first heading to Charlotte, where he will "pay his respects to the brave law enforcement officers killed and wounded in the line of duty," according to a White House release.

Four officers wer e killed while trying to serve a warrant to a convicted felon in Charlotte on Monday.

Biden is scheduled to leave Charlotte at 3:10 p.m. and head to Wilmington International Airport, where he is set to arrive at 3:55 p.m.

He will then head to the Wilmington Convention Center, where he will deliver remarks at 4:30 p.m. before departing Wilmington at 6:05 p.m.

More: Ahead of Biden's visit, what Wilmington projects are in dire need of federal funding?

What will Biden discuss?

While at the Wilmington Convention Center, Biden is expected to discuss "how his Investing in America agenda is rebuilding our infrastructure and creating good-paying jobs in Wilmington and across the country," according to a news release from The White House.

In response to why Wilmington might be a fitting location for the discussion of such subject matter, Mayor Bill Saffo mentioned U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Reagan's previous visit to Wilmington , highlighting Reagan's discussion of national PFAS regulations.

"I know that the administration has been very engaged in that issue," Saffo said. "They've also been engaged at the federal level with the removal of lead from our pipes," adding that the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has been working on that matter for a number of years.

Wilmington has been on the forefront of numerous environmental issues regionally, the mayor added.

"I think (Biden) is here to make an announcement as to what that means not only for this community but for the country," Saffo said.

How has the city of Wilmington prepared for the president's arrival?

Preparing for a presidential visit requires a community-wide collaborative effort, Saffo said.

"When a president visits a community there are a lot of things that we have to work on and work with the administration and ... the secret service in planning these types of events," Saffo said. "Where the events are held, the size of the venue, the locations, the motorcade to and from the airport − the logistics involved are enormous."

Saffo said Biden's visit is historic for Wilmington.

"Obviously we are very proud to have any president arrive in our community that represents our government," noting that former President Donald Trump previously visited the Port City in 2020, designating Wilmington the first World War II Heritage City nationwide.

When will Air Force One arrive at ILM?

Air Force One will arrive at the Wilmington International Airport at 3:55 p.m. Thursday.

By Wednesday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration listed a temporary flight restriction (TFR) Thursday in a roughly 30-mile radius surrounding downtown Wilmington between 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. It's unknown as of Wednesday night if the time range will widen given Biden's change in schedule.

It is important to note that Wilmington International Airport anticipates minor impacts to commercial flight operations during this time as the TFR does not fully restrict scheduled commercial flights, according to airport spokesperson Erin McNally.

"We encourage travelers to check their flight status directly with the airlines for the most up to date information," reads a Facebook announcement from ILM posted Wednesday. "Additionally, travelers may want to allow extra time, in the event there are temporary road closures or changes in traffic patterns."

Air travel for general aviation users will be restricted primarily between 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., according to the post. General aviation users are encouraged to check NOTAMS (notices) for details.

What about security and traffic?

The Wilmington Police Department will be providing personnel to assist with the needs of the U.S. Secret Service, police spokesman Lt. Greg Willett said.

The Secret Service works closely with local law enforcement to "minimize disruptions to the public while ensuring the highest level of safety and security," Special Agent Joseph Routh said in an email on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, Routh was unable to discuss any security specifics, but he said that "the public can expect intermittent road closures and parking restrictions as part of the visit."

Saffo referred to Wilmington law enforcement involvement with the event as "significant," noting the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington's Secret Service field office have been in communication with one another in preparation of the event.

As for traffic, the Secret Service has been advised about the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge lane closures, Saffo said.

"I don't know the exact route that the president will take, but I know that they've been advised and informed about that," Saffo said. The Secret Service will "try to minimize any kind of impact to the community to the best of their ability."
