Great Southern Outback Tours & Accommodation

The wonderful stories of the Great Southern region are the foundations of Western Australia’s colonial heritage and our inspiration for Great Southern Outback Tours & Accommodation.

We are a privately owned, bespoke outback touring company, located in the beautiful Kalgan River valley, near the port city of Albany.  We offer small group, off-the-beaten-track 4WD adventures, discovering the glorious rural landscapes of WA’s south east, from the rugged coastal cliffs of the Southern Ocean to the pioneering Goldfields and all points in-between. We like to think that we do things a little differently.  It’s extraordinary country out there in WA’s outback with wide open spaces and clear nights offering an outstanding view of the stars. We’ve created tours that combine a little of everything from meeting local farmers to seeing its amazing wildlife and contemplating both colonial and Aboriginal history and culture.

None of the well-trod tourist trail for us!  Our tours go off-road and into the heart of rural communities as that’s where the REAL stories are found.

Katter Kitch Gallery and Tours

Katter Kich Gallery and Tours are hosted by Michael Ward, in Hyden. They were created to showcase the First nations history of the area . Katter Kich Gallery and Tours also have an art gallery and studio to support aboriginal artists to showcase and sell their art.

The tours are designed to connect people to country and cultural history, and include gu ided walks,  Tag-along tours, w ellbeing workshops and c ultural immersion.

Night Time Tours

Wadderin Wildlife Sanctuary Wadderin Wildlife Sanctuary is 430 ha in size, enclosed by 9km of fox and cat proof fencing, and home to reintroduced fauna close to extinction in the WA Wheatbelt. Animals including the Red-tailed Phascogale, Brush-tailed Bettong (Woylie), Banded Hare-wallaby, Brushtail Possum and Southern Brown Bandicoot (Quenda) now thrive within the safe haven.

The sanctuary is run by a local volunteer community group that undertakes ongoing maintenance and improvement to the sanctuary and runs night tours within the sanctuary. Our tours are taken on an open electric bus at night so you can hear, see and experience the bush and the fauna that live there first-hand. The entire tour takes about one hour, so you will need to allow one and a half hours.

Tours are held on every Saturday night of the year, with other nights for group bookings by special arrangement. A guide will meet you at the Narembeen Roadhouse and will leave at 6.45pm. You will follow their vehicle to the sanctuary, and there, board the electric bus.  Tours are held on every Saturday night of the year, with other nights for group bookings by special arrangement.

This extraordinary formation, thought to be 2,700 million years old, is the north face of a larger rocky hill known as Hyden Rock. Wave Rock is a true WA icon. Spanning a massive 110 meters long, this nature's wonder is found in Australia's Golden Outback.

It’s just under 4 hours drive east from Perth through WA’s wheatbelt and farming country to the small community of Hyden and a short drive to the Hyden Wildlife Park – a 160 hectare reserve which includes Hyden Rock and the Wave Rock. Wave Rock that is the highlight of the park with what is referred to as a ‘flared slope’ with the concave shape of the granitic rock. The shape is likely to be the result of chemical and groundwater erosion over millions of years.

Wave Rock comprises vertical strands of different shades of granite and the bands of colour and contours of the rock provide great material for keen photographers, particularly in the golden morning and afternoon sunlight. Sunset is also a good time for seeing some of the 40 or more species of birds that live around Wave Rock and create a cacophony of birdsong at dusk. Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles that live in the area.

Wave Rock or ‘Katter Kich’ has strong cultural connections for the Noongar people who used rock as a meeting place. About 20 minutes drive north of Hyden is Mulka’s Cave in The Humps Nature Reserve, which has a wealth of Aboriginal rock art with over 450 individual items from hand stencils to paintings and motifs.

If you are travelling during September to December then your visit will be greeted by fields of spectacular wildflowers including stunning orchids. In Hyden be sure to visit the Lace Place with the largest collection of laces in the southern hemisphere, see the koalas and white kangaroos at the wildlife park and visit the pioneer museum.

  • Camper06007978614 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A wonderful bus trip . Very informative and well worth doing A very enjoyable day out. Very informative and caring guide/bus driver. I do wish we had more time at Busselton and missed the Margaret River Township. The latter was boring. Most shops shut by the time we got there. Very Ho Hum! I wished they had postcards at Busselton(of the pier) and Cape Leeuwin. The Mammoth Cave very interesting. Read more Written April 25, 2024
  • evelynw147 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great tour, which stands out for good reasons The booking process was easy and the communication before the tour was great. Pickup place was extremely convenient and pickup was punctual to the minute. I had done a very similar tour some years ago, but the visit to the big and beautiful limestone cave was new to me. I had enjoyed the Busselton jetty and Cape Leeuwin, so I looked forward to refreshing the memories. There were changes in the places and differences in the itineraries, but the most important difference was our guide/driver Jonathan. He knows so much about the history, geography, biology and traditions of the country. His love of the land and the environment is palpable and he has a great sense of humour. I shall remember this tour with fondness. Read more Written April 23, 2024
  • merseysideno8 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Good excursion off Perth metro area An enjoyable experience - the sand dunes are great and the wildlife park visit was brilliant, the pinnacles less so. • MatAndGo 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Memorable experiences but not too much time for Pinnacles I regret to rate this experience with only 3 stars due to a significant letdown; our time at the Pinnacles was a mere 30 minutes due to schedule delays. The rest of the tour, including Caversham Wildlife Park and the exhilarating sandboarding, was enjoyable, and the lobster shack served a delightful lunch. However, the brief stop at the Pinnacles meant we had scarcely enough time to disembark and snap a quick photo of the nearest formations. It’s unclear if this rush was to manage the various tour groups efficiently, but the limited time to appreciate the stunning geological wonders was truly disappointing. • Aus4545 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles A Pinnacles trip, In Which You Spend Virtually No Time There. Please don't waste your money on this trip. I can honestly say the worst organised trip ever, I have never seen so many people upset and angry. It all stems from not having the regular driver, spent double the time at the wildlife centre, the result is less than 30 minutes spent at the Pinnacles, it should have been an hour. Majority of this trip is spent getting there and back, if you have a hire car go yourself, it's dead easy to get there from Perth and you will have a lot more time at the Pinnacles. The Stargazing is done in the Pinnacles car park. This trip is all smoke and mirrors, and leave a big hole in your pocket. Read more Written March 10, 2024
  • Lollastewart 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Don't miss this fabulous experience A long tour but well worth it. Everywhere is far in WA and, when you have a personable and informative guide like Zac, the miles go by quickly enough. Super comfy coach and good food at dinner time, two refreshments stops . The mysterious pinnacles were fascinating, sunset beautiful over the Indian ocean and and star gazing was gobsmackingly wondrous. I'll never forget seeing distant galaxies. Worth every cent. • 169hermant 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing experience with one exception Our tour guide Jamie was amazing. He was very knowledgeable and was able to point out all of the high points of the tour. We did have a semi-urgency on the bus which resulted in the AC going out while it was over 100° outside. Jamie did his best to accommodate everyone and show genuine concern. I really appreciate the way he handled the situation. Otherwise, the tour SELF was phenomenal. I really enjoyed the pinnacles, kangaroos, koalas, and lunch was amazing. Plenty of opportunities and plenty of time to rest and relax during the bus ride. You will see plenty of desert and countryside. You will also see ocean Shores. The part of the tour that I think needs to be revised or even omitted, is the chocolate factory portion towards the end. It is completely pointless and feels more like an arranged money grab. No one was interested in chocolates. The time spent traveling there could’ve been spent exploring somewhere much more memorable. My recommendation is to choose a tour without the chocolate factory. Another option is for the company to do away with it altogether. Otherwise, even with the chocolate factory, you will have an amazing time. Read more Written February 23, 2024
  • K2966SIsebastianv 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Full day tour well worth the time This is an amazing tour to do if you’re unfamiliar with the area. It’s a fantastic ‘sampler’ type tour to figure out what you’d like to come back and spend more time exploring in the Margaret River region. It runs almost 13 hours over 350km visiting mammoth cave, brewery/distillery restaurant lunch with wine, beer and cider tasting, Busselton Pier, Cape Leeuwin lighthouse with knowledgeable local guides. • choco313 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles 日本人女性ガイドの態度に非常に不愉快な思いをしました。 Tour Driver was great, but Japanese Tour Guide made us so pissed off. Read more Written February 18, 2024
