YouTube Hashtags: What Marketers Need to Know

Erica Santiago

Published: September 27, 2022

When I first noticed YouTube hashtags being featured in videos, I thought they looked silly. At the time, I thought hashtags were only useful for platforms like Twitter or Instagram. It wasn't until I clicked on a hashtag under an anime clip I was watching that I realized how useful the tags were.

youtube tour hashtags

Clicking on the hashtag helped me easily find other anime-related videos and content creators. And when I started my own channel, hashtags helped users find and engage with my own videos.

YouTube hashtags are a simple but effective way to bring more attention to your videos and boost your channel's viewership. Here's everything marketers need to know about YouTube hashtags.

What are YouTube hashtags?

How to add hashtags to a youtube video, best youtube hashtags for your video, popular youtube hashtags, hashtags for gaming videos, hashtags for food videos, hashtags for beauty and fashion videos, hashtags for entertainment videos, hashtags for educational videos, top youtube hashtags.

YouTube hashtags are keywords preceded by the # symbol. The hashtags are clickable and allow users to easily find related videos sharing the same hashtag. Using a hashtag also allows YouTube creators to categorize their videos with other content that includes the hashtag. Hashtags can also be used to conduct a search in the YouTube search bar.

Ultimately, hashtags make videos more discoverable — benefiting both users and content creators.

In the example below, Today includes #Emmys #Fashion and #RedCarpet for its video "Fashion Hits and Misses From the 2022 Emmy Awards."

A YouTube video posted Today uses YouTube hashtags in its description.

If you click on #Emmys, you'll be taken to a page featuring other YouTube videos using the same hashtag.

The hashtag #Emmys takes users to a page filled with other videos using the same hashtag

Now you can easily find and click through other videos covering the award show.

Hashtags can be added to a YouTube video's title or description. Just type the # symbol into the title or description then begin to add the topic or keyword you want to be associated with your video. YouTube will then suggest popular hashtags based on what you typed in. From there, choose a recommended hashtag to promote your video with others using the same hashtag, or create one of your own that fits your content.

The hashtags you used will then link to a results page featuring other videos sharing the hashtag.

The best YouTube hashtags for your video will depend on its content. For example, if your video features a celebrity, influencer, or public figure, you can use their name as a hashtag. If your video is part of an ongoing series or playlist on your channel, you can include the title of the series or playlist as a hashtag as well.

In the example below, First We Feast uses the hashtags #Hotones, #Lizzo, and #SeanEvans. Hot Ones is the name of the series on the channel, Lizzo is the celebrity being interviewed, and Sean Evans is the host.

YouTube hashtags are used to promote this YouTube video about the singer Lizzo

In this example, using #Hotones in the video is great for the channel because clicking on it takes the viewer to a page showing other videos in the web series.

The YouTube hashtag #hotones takes users to a page of videos all using the tag

Hashtags that align with your niche are also best for your videos. For example, if you're a fashion YouTuber then hashtags like #fashion, #outfitideas, or #styleinspo will be most helpful for your videos. If your videos are funny then hashtags like #comedy, #lol, or #comedyskit are solid choices.

To find the best hashtags for your video, look up videos of other creators in your niche to see what tags they are using. Or search words in the YouTube search bar to see what other popular words and phrases come up. TubeBuddy is also a great tool for YouTube content creators and has a feature that allows creators to find keywords and phrases that can be turned into hashtags.

Screenshot of TubeBuddy's keyword explorer feature which can be used to find YouTube hashtags

Make sure you don't use too many hashtags in your videos. According to Google , the more hashtags you use, the less relevant your video becomes. Try to stick to no more than three hashtags per video. If your video contains more than 60 hashtags, YouTube will ignore every single hashtag, and your video may be removed from your uploads or search results.

Your video may also be removed if you're using irrelevant or misleading hashtags. So, remember — not all trending hashtags will guarantee success for your video. If you see a hashtag trending on YouTube, but it's not relevant to your video — just leave it alone.

Here are some popular hashtags for different kinds of YouTube content.

#youtubegamer

Hashtags are all around us. Used by millions of users across all social networks, hashtags easily became a must-have asset that goes in hand with every social media post (blame it on their creator – Chris Messina).

YouTube hashtags are not an exception, especially if you want to boost brand awareness and improve your chances of getting your video content noticed.

Here, it applies the same rule as Instagram posts – if your YouTube videos don’t include any hashtags, you will miss out on views and engagement. Why risk it?

After all, YouTube hashtags could differentiate whether your YouTube video will get 10 or 1K likes.

If YouTube is one of the channels where you focus your marketing efforts, this article is for you!

What are YouTube hashtags?

According to the official definition by Wikipedia:

A hashtag, introduced by the number sign, or hash symbol, #, is a type of metadata tag used on social networks such as Twitter and Instagram and other microblogging services. It lets users apply dynamic, user-generated tagging that helps other users easily find messages with a specific theme or content. Users create and use hashtags by placing a hash symbol in front of a word or unspaced phrase in a message. The hashtag may contain letters, digits, and underscores.

First introduced on YouTube in 2016, the hashtag symbol easily penetrated this social media platform, becoming one of the main ways for YouTube users to follow and join discussions on different topics.

Before we dive into how you can maximize the potential of YouTube hashtags, let’s cover the basics – where and how can you add a hashtag on YouTube?

How do YouTube hashtags work?

A hashtag enables you to find all the YouTube video content where the particular hashtag is mentioned.

There are 2 ways on how you can search and discover YouTube hashtags:

So, for example, if you click #embedsocial on a video or if you type #embedsocial on the YouTube search bar, you will get a listing of all the YouTube videos that contain this hashtag.

Don’t confuse YouTube with a search engine. It’s more like a community that helps viewers find the most relevant content for them.

Benefits of using YouTube hashtags

No matter if you decide to add your YouTube hashtags in the title, above it, or in a YouTube description box, you will get the following benefits that will quickly level up your digital marketing game:

Boosts your SEO efforts

This is probably the number one reason why a marketer should be obsessed with YouTube hashtags – they will improve your YouTube SEO process help you rank higher in search results, and improve your searchability effortlessly.

Despite standing higher for your target keyword, when a viewer watches a video with a hashtag like yours, the YouTube algorithm will show you up as a related video in the sidebar area. This is great.

Improves content discoverability

Hashtags are really practical. YouTube gives viewers the most relevant video based on the tag they search for. This will save users time and effort when looking to consume content that meets their needs.

Accessible to everyone

Nobody owns hashtags. Anyone on YouTube can view every video, click on hashtags, explore the topic, and comment on any video. Thus, you can use any hashtags you want for your videos. There are no limits.

Best practices for using hashtags on YouTube

Now that you are familiar with the main reasons why you should consider using YouTube hashtags in your next marketing campaign let’s go over some tips and best practices on how you can maximize your hashtag potential.

Stop over-tagging

Keep it up to a maximum of 15 hashtags (3-4 are recommended). Because the more hashtags you add to your video, the less relevant it becomes for viewers who are searching.

According to the YouTube community guidelines , if your video has 15+ hashtags, the platform will ignore all the hashtags on that video. Worst case scenario – your video may be removed.

Use only relevant hashtags

Make sure that every hashtag you use is one way or another closely related to your video. Don’t violate or gamble with  YouTube’s spam, deceptive practices & scams policies .

Learn from YouTube influencers and your competitors

Never underestimate the power of YouTube influencers. They are influencers because they understand how the platform works and know what they should do to get more video views and subscribers. Follow what hashtags they use and borrow some trendy and specific hashtags.

Influencers are not the only ones you should follow. Keep an eye on the competitors in your niche, too. Make sure to pay attention to their video content and remember what YouTube hashtags they are using. Please don’t copy and paste the same tag yourself; use them only for inspiration.

Using Hashtag Tools generators is also an excellent source for ideas. We are listing the most popular YouTube hashtag tools below.

The Beginner’s Guide to YouTube Hashtags (With Examples)

The-Beginner’s-Guide-to-YouTube-Hashtags

What could be worse than creating an excellent video for your YouTube channel only to find that it is not getting enough views? Here’s one reason: Not using any trending Hashtags on YouTube. Believe it or not, hashtags on YouTube play a key role in maximizing the reach of your YouTube videos. Using the wrong hashtags can hamper your reach whereas relevant hashtags can skyrocket your video views through the roof! But how do you do it? What are the best practices to leverage the best YouTube hashtags? That’s what this blog is about. In this blog, we’ll help you understand some best practices and learn how to use hashtags on YouTube the right way so your videos get more reach and views.

What are YouTube Hashtags?

YouTube hashtags are nothing but words and phrases on YouTube that are preceded by the octothorpe (hash #) symbol. These hashtags are clickable and are used to tag videos to a particular theme or topic so others can find them easily. They work as excellent filter words and help make your search for a topic much easier. Many YouTubers use popular YouTube hashtags on a regular basis, either as a part of their campaigns or to make their videos known to new viewers.

What-are-YouTube-Hashtags

For example, The Tech Chap (a popular YouTube tech channel) uses hashtags like #OnePlus7T, #OnePlus7Pro, and #OnePlus in his OnePlus 7T vs OnePlus 7T Pro review. When visitors type for a relevant keyword like “tech review”, YouTube places his video as a recommended suggestion on the results page. In this way, hashtags can help your videos get the spotlight they need in search results. With hashtags, visitors can also discover related videos surrounding a particular topic.

Types of YouTube Hashtags

There are four main different types of YouTube hashtags:

  • Title Hashtags.
  • Description Hashtags.
  • Branded Hashtags.
  • Location Hashtags.

Each of these serves a different purpose. You have the option to use either one of these or all of them in your videos.

How to Add Hashtags to YouTube Videos

Adding hashtags to your YouTube videos isn’t difficult. By using a different set of hashtags you can make your videos stand out from the rest of the competition. The best way is to mix match and strategically sprinkle them in certain locations. Doing so dramatically improves the rankings and reachability of your videos. Once added they appear in blue and can be clicked by your visitors to further explore the topic. However, keep in mind not to overuse these hashtags as they can redirect users from your videos to somewhere else. Hence, it’s always better to follow some best practices when using them.

How to Add Hashtags to Your YouTube Title

How-to-Add-Hashtags-to-Your-YouTube-Title

To best way to add hashtags to your YouTube title is by picking a relevant topic as your hashtag. You can pick a topic that broadly covers the subject you’re talking about in your video. Try to keep a maximum count of two and not overuse the hashtag. For example, StylEnrich uses #BestOutofWaste and #DIY as its title hashtags of choice to enhance the discoverability of their topic: Making a DIY Jewelry Organizer using a waste cold drink bottle.

How to Add Hashtags to YouTube Description

Description Hashtags are those that appear in the bottom section of your YouTube video. To effectively add hashtags in your YouTube description, select the ones with the highest reach. Keep in mind the first three hashtags you’ll use will be displayed above your YouTube title so make sure you pick some of the highly relevant ones to add in your description. Also, if your title already contains a hashtag in it then the description hashtags won’t show up above the title.

Add-Hashtags-to-YouTube-Description

In the above example, Sweetwater does a great job with its hashtags, the channel uses pretty self-explanatory but highly broad hashtags like #PianoLessons and #PianoStylings for its video tutorials.

How to Add Branded Hashtags on YouTube

Branded hashtags are custom hashtags created by YouTubers for subscribers where the main intention is to drive more brand awareness for the channel. These types of hashtags work best if you’re running a campaign (for example a contest giveaway) or live video stream for your fans (Q&A.) To create your own branded hashtag think of a good slogan or tagline that goes with the topic of the video.

Add-Branded-Hashtags-on-YouTube

For example, the YouTube channel PropertyLimBrothers use branded hashtags called #AskPropertyLimBrothers and #MelvinLim for Q&A sessions with their subscribers.

How to Add Location Hashtag to Your YouTube Video

Location hashtags on YouTube can only be used if you’re uploading a video from your smartphone. When uploading your video, click on the location tab in your YouTube uploader, search the area you want to highlight, pick the ideal location and you’re good to go. Like title hashtags, location hashtags also cover the description hashtags so they won’t show up if you add a location to your title.

Do You Need Hashtags on YouTube?

It’s not mandatory that you need to include hashtags in your YouTube video. However, adding hashtags in your videos can improve the discoverability of your channel and increase the reach of your videos. They can be used as a good brand awareness tool.

Do Tags Help on YouTube?

Yes, Tagging definitely helps rank your video on YouTube. They make it easier for users to filter content and streamline their search. If you have tagged your video, there is a great chance of it getting noticed by viewers in the recommendations.

How Many Hashtags Can You Use On YouTube?

There is no limit to how many hashtags you can have on YouTube. However, it’s best to keep the count to 3-5 hashtags per video. Overstuffing hashtags in videos can result in YouTube blocking your videos so make sure you don’t overdo them.

Best Practices & Tips to Use YouTube Hashtags

  • Keep it Minimum The number one rule to remember when using hashtags on YouTube is not overusing the hashtags in your titles and descriptions. Keep a limit of your hashtags between 3-4 for each video. This will make your title and description look neater and also prevent YouTube from penalizing you for stuffing.
  • Pick Relevant Topics as Your Hashtags When using hashtags, only pick those that are relatable to the topic and have something to do with the subject of your video. Using irrelevant hashtags could lead to policy violations of YouTube and could bring a negative impact on your content.
  • Use Online Hashtag Generating Tools If you’re not sure about the right hashtag, you can take the help of online hashtag tools. Most of these tools are free and generate a list of curated hashtags for a particular topic. All you have to do is input the key term and you’ll have some best YouTube hashtags ready to be used.
  • Use YouTube Suggestions to Mine Hashtags If you don’t want to search the internet for hashtags, you can simply mine a few right off YouTube. Just go to the YouTube search bar and type “#” followed by the topic name you want as your hashtag. Once added, YouTube will automatically start suggesting some of the trending YouTube hashtags that are popular.

Tips for using YouTube tags

What are youtube tags .

YouTube tags are keywords that you add to your YouTube videos. They help YouTube understand the content and context of your video, which allows YouTube to show your video in relevant search results.

For example, if you have a video about how to make a cake, you would want to use YouTube tags like “baking,” “cake recipe” and “how to make a cake.” This would help YouTube show your video to people who are searching for those terms.

Why are YouTube tags important?

YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, and its 2 billion monthly active users use it to find videos on all sorts of topics. Tags for YouTube help people discover your videos in YouTube search results.

YouTube says that the most important SEO factors on the platform are the video title, description and thumbnail. Still, YouTube tags can be a great secondary method to boost discoverability on YouTube.

YouTube tags vs. YouTube hashtags

The main difference between YouTube tags and YouTube hashtags is that tags are used for relevancy in YouTube search, while hashtags are used for dedicated hashtag search .

For example, think of hashtags on Twitter . When you search for a specific hashtag, you’re able to see all of the Tweets that include that same hashtag. YouTube hashtags work similarly, giving users the ability to see all YouTube videos that include a specific hashtag in the title or description.

YouTube tags, on the other hand, describe the content of your video and help YouTube (and potential viewers) understand what your video is about.

Tags will help YouTube’s search engine algorithm determine where to rank your video in YouTube search results. Hashtags will simply anchor your content to other content that uses an identical hashtag.

Step 1. Go to YouTube and hover over your profile picture. Select YouTube Studio from the drop-down menu.

Step 2. Select Content from the left menu.

Step 3. To edit a video, simply hover over it and click Details .

Step 4. Scroll down the video details page and click Show More .

Step 5. Add relevant tags up to 500 characters total, in the Tags section.

Adding YouTube Tags

Step 6. When you’re done, click Save in the top-right corner of your screen.

Before you start tagging your YouTube videos, you should spend some time researching popular YouTube tags.

Not surprisingly, the best way to find popular YouTube tags is on YouTube. To find popular tags, simply go to YouTube and search for a topic related to your content. For instance, if you are making a video on how to take care of houseplants, you could search for “how to take care of houseplants”.

Finding popular youtube tags

Choose a video that fits your search query and look at the YouTube tag suggestions on the right side of the screen. These tags are based on related searches and can show you what people who have watched this content were also interested in.

You can also use a YouTube tags extractor or tags generator to find even more popular tags for YouTube.

YouTube tags extractor

YouTube tag extractors are online tools that help you find the most popular YouTube tags for your content.

When you enter the URL of a YouTube video into a YouTube tags extractor, it will show you a list of tags that users have added for that video. You can then use these tags in your videos to make them more discoverable.

Tracking performance of YouTube tags

Once you’ve done the heavy lifting of tagging your YouTube videos, it’s time to track the performance of your YouTube tags. These are a few metrics you can use to track the success of your YouTube tags:

  • Views: How many people have watched your video?
  • Watch time: How long are people watching your video?
  • Engagement: What percentage of viewers are engaging with your video (liking, sharing, commenting)?
  • Traffic sources: Where are your viewers coming from? YouTube search, YouTube suggested videos, other social media channels?

To track these metrics, you can use YouTube analytics . To access YouTube analytics, click on your profile picture on the YouTube homepage. Choose YouTube Studio , then click Analytics in the left menu.

YouTube Channel Analytics

Don’t forget to use the YouTube search traffic sources, which lets you see which search terms are bringing people to your videos . Continue to optimize your YouTube tags by analyzing your YouTube analytics and making adjustments to improve traffic.

Get the most out of your YouTube tags by following these best practices.

1. Don’t use too many tags

Don’t go overboard when adding tags to your YouTube videos. The YouTube algorithm is designed to present the most relevant content for each user, so if you’re using too many tags, or if your tags are irrelevant, YouTube might relegate your videos to the bottom of search results.

According to Briggsby , 31 to 40 tags (of two to three words each) is ideal.

number of phrases for youtube tags

2. Use tags that are trending

YouTube has an auto-suggest feature that can help you identify which tags are trending. Simply begin typing your tag into the YouTube search bar and check out some of the recommended tags that pop up.

3. Use both specific and broad tags

To help users find your videos, use both specific and broad tags. For example, if you’re a real estate agent in Los Angeles, some of your specific tags could be “Los Angeles real estate” or “LA homes for sale.” Some of your broader tags could be “real estate” or “apartments for sale.”

Remember, YouTube is a search engine, so treat your tags like you would keywords for Google . The more relevant and specific your tags are, the easier it will be for YouTube to match your video with user searches.

4. Don’t forget synonyms

Using synonyms is a great way to broaden the reach of your YouTube tags. For example, if you’re a travel vlogger, some of your tags could be “travel,” “vacation,” or “trip.” It’s always smart to consider how people (not just algorithms) might be searching for your content.

5. Use competitor videos as inspiration

Checking out how your competitors are tagging their YouTube videos can give you some great ideas. After all, if they’re ranking high for certain keywords, it’s likely because those keywords are working well.

To see what tags a YouTube video has, open the video page on Google Chrome or Firefox. Then, right-click on the page and click View Source . Hit Control + F , then search for the word “ keywords ” in the source code to see the tags.

As you’re looking at competitor videos, also take note of their titles and descriptions. These can give you some great ideas for how to title and describe your own videos to help them rank.

Are you using YouTube hashtags with your videos? If not, you might be leaving tons of views (and money) on the table. So let's put an end to lost views right now by learning everything there is about why and how to use hashtags on YouTube - the right way. And, the YouTube policies you need to be careful with if you want to avoid being penalized, or worse...banned.Here is everything you need to know about YouTube hashtags broken down into the most commonly asked questions and their answers. Jan Fassbender of So geht YouTube explains the dos and don'ts in this video →

What Are YouTube Hashtags?

YouTube hashtags are an easy way to find videos for a topic you want to learn more about. Hashtags are clickable words or phrases that have a hash (#-pound sign) before it. They are used to identify a specific topic.By clicking on a hashtag you can discover related YouTube videos with that tag. Using a hashtag will keep you from having to browse through pages of unrelated videos, or videos that aren't specific enough to your topic.

How to Put Hashtags on YouTube?

On YouTube there are three different ways how hashtags can be displayed:

  • In the video description: YouTube allows up to 15 hashtags
  • Above the title: YouTube here displays the first three hashtags you enter in the description
  • In the title: this way no additional hashtags will be displayed above the title

Via YouTube's mobile app you can also set location hashtags. These hashtags also get displayed above the title. They don't feature a #-sign though.

How to Add Hashtags on YouTube?

Adding hashtags to your YouTube video couldn't be easier. You simply add the hashtags to the video's description and after you have uploaded it, they will be displayed above the video's title. Hashtags shown in the title and description will be hyperlinked.

youtube hashtag description (1)

When you enter a hashtag in the video title , the hashtags from the description won't get displayed above the title. The title hashtag overrules them.

youtube hashtag video title

Users can then click on the hashtags that are shown in your video's title, above your video, or in the description to go to that hashtag's search page results where they can then watch other related videos. Location hashtags can only be set when uploading a video via your smartphone.

location hashtag youtube

Location hashtags also overrule the hashtags from the description text.

Why Should I Use YouTube Hashtags?

You should use hashtags on YouTube because they improve searchability . Optimized hashtags will give you more visibility on social media for all your related video posts. Using a hashtag will group keywords and related topics together, which makes it easier for a viewer to find.

"Add hashtags in key parts of your description to help viewers find your video. [...] Hashtags are especially great to use with trending content, such as upcoming events or people in the news." YouTube Creator Academy

Hashtags give the viewer the best possible videos for their search without them having to look through pages of unrelated topics or videos that are not specific enough to what their original search was for.Additionally, hashtags make it easier for users to track different posts and events that have similar hashtags. It will also help them to see which ones have gone viral. Basically, hashtags are a significant time saver and a huge convenience for the user.

But there are also possible disadvantages involved with adding hashtags.

"When a viewer clicks on a hashtag they are taking off your video. And they are dropped onto a page that probably doesn't have any other videos listed by your channel. So right there you just killed your accumulated watch time and you hurt your audience retention."   Brian G. Johnson

What Are the Best Hashtags for YouTube Views?

The best hashtags for YouTube are your company brand , popular topics that relate to your video content, and locations. Locations are entered into the video settings upon upload from mobile. Location hashtags overrule all other hashtags that have been entered in the YouTube description text . They are also shown above the video's title as well.

One of the best ways to find hashtags is to look at the trending hashtags on YouTube for inspiration. Doing this will help you develop some of your own hashtags similar to what is already working for someone else.  You can also include some specific YouTube hashtags for Instagram also. Just do a quick internet search and you will find the best YouTube hashtags for Instagram.

Most Popular YouTube Hashtags

Here’s a list of the 10 most popular YouTube hashtags that are trending, according to YouTube Autosuggest:

  • #nurseryrhymes
  • #littelangelnurseryrhymes
  • #peppapigenglish
  • #banglashortfilm
  • #loolookids
  • #babysharkchallenge

Where Can I Search for the Most Relevant Hashtags?

Using tools to search for the most relevant hashtags is the easiest way to find what you need. Tools like RiteTag or Hashtagify will help you find hashtags for YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and more. They give you a wide variety of hashtag options such as hashtags to get seen now, hashtags to get seen over time, even hashtags that very few people are following.

YouTube Hashtag Rules

There are several YouTube hashtag policies you need to be careful with; otherwise, even if you were unaware of that policy, you could end up being penalized or banned.

  • Overtagging. Don't add more than 15 hashtags in a single video.  If you have too many hashtags in a video, YouTube will ignore all of them.
  • Misleading Content. Never use hashtags that are misleading or not directly related to your video's content.
  • Harassment. Never use hashtags with the intent of harassing, threatening, humiliating, intimidating, cyberbullying, etc. any group or individual.
  • Hate Speech. Never use hashtags that promote violence or hatred against any group or individual.
  • Sexual Content. Never use sexual or explicit hashtags or those intended to be sexually provocative or your video will be removed.
  • Vulgar Language. Never use profanity or offensive terms in your hashtags; otherwise, it could lead to your video being assigned an age-restriction or being removed altogether.
  • Non-Hashtags . Never use ordinary descriptive tags or repetitive sentences in your video's description or it could result in a penalty or the removal of your video.

These are just a few of the YouTube hashtag policies you need to be careful with. There are more; therefore, it's best to review the YouTube Community Guidelines before you begin.

Why Can't I Find the Hashtag I Just Posted?

After you've posted a hashtag, it might not be visible immediately. If this happens, wait about 10-15 minutes , then reload the page and it should appear.

Will the YouTube Hashtags I Use Affect My SEO and YouTube Rankings?

Yes! Using YouTube hashtags will positively affect your SEO and YouTube rankings. Technically, the purpose of adding hashtags is for searchability. However, the easier it is for people to find your video, the more views, likes, comments, subscribers, and shares you will have, which, in turn, will positively affect your SEO and YouTube rankings. YouTube hashtags make it easier for users to access more quality information and authoritative content that best suits their chosen topic, which is the goal of getting more eyes on your videos.Sometimes it's better to let the professionals handle your YouTube traffic generation. Doing so will save you time and money. There are several YouTube SEO tools and plugins on the market to help you get more views via YouTube SEO. In fact, some YouTube traffic generation services will analyze your videos, check your ranking factors, keyword rankings, provide you with a YouTube SEO action plan, a tag generator , professional thumbnails and more. Not to mention helping you find and use the best possible YouTube hashtags as well.

Does YouTube Use an Algorithm?

YouTube does use an algorithm; however, the ranking algorithm is different than the algorithm used for displaying the YouTube search results—the ones that don't have a hashtag. YouTube looks for patterns so you should use some hashtags across all your videos. This will give your videos a higher chance of being suggested right after one of your videos is played.

Where Can I Go to See Whether Video Views Originated from Hashtags?

If you want to see where your video views came from, you can go to the YouTube Analytics, then Traffic Sources, then to the YouTube Search and you will see the hashtags listed there.

youtube hashtags in analytics

Here is a quick summary of everything we've learned.

  • Hashtags identify a specific topic.
  • Hashtags help searchability and YouTube SEO. However, keep in mind that people can click on the hashtag and leave your video.
  • If your hashtag is a phrase type it together as one word using two to three words only.
  • There are 3 types of YouTube hashtags: in the title, above the title, and in the description.
  • YouTube displays hashtags as blue and clickable.
  • The best hashtags for YouTube are your company brand, popular topics that relate to your video content, and locations.
  • The benefit of using tools to search for the most relevant hashtags.
  • Use hashtags across all your videos because the YouTube algorithm looks for patterns.
  • We went over a long list of YouTube hashtag policies you need to be careful with.
  • Wait 10-15 minutes and reload your page if you can't find your hashtags after you've posted them.
  • Using hashtags will have a positive effect on a video's searchability, YouTube SEO, and rankings.
  • Where to find out if your hashtags generated views. You go to YouTube Analytics, Traffic Sources, then to YouTube Search and you will see the hashtags listed there

Adding hashtags to your YouTube videos is a great way to boost your views, likes, shares, comments, YouTube subscribers , and your SEO. Therefore, if you are not using YouTube hashtags, you are leaving money (and views) on the table. Why not add hashtags to your YouTube videos today? It's easy to do, doesn't take much time, and could bring you a huge return on your investment.

YouTube Changes 2023 - Is Your Channel Prepared?

YouTube Hashtag Generator Tool

YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world (after Google) and it rivals Facebook in most countries in terms of monthly active users. These two reasons alone make YouTube a high priority channel for any marketer.

Optimizing your videos to make them easily found is the best way to maximize your exposure on YouTube.

We need to think about YouTube less as a social media channel (although it certainly is one) and more like a search engine. This makes it really unique in the world of social media since we tend to search less on other social channels (if at all). Whereas for most YouTube users, the first thing they do when opening the app or going to the site is to perform a keyword search.

What are YouTube Hashtags?

With 500 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute (!!!) you need to do everything you can to help users find your videos in the vast ocean of videos on YouTube. Hashtags on YouTube are used much like how hashtags are used on other social media channels - they’re designed to group similar videos around topics or themes. There are 2 ways to add Hashtags to your videos:

1. Video description

This is the most common way to add hashtags to your YouTube videos. There isn’t any special field or method for adding hashtags, you simply add them within the text of your video description . In this example below, SEOptimer has added 3 hashtags into the bottom of their video description:

YouTube description

You can add up to 15 hashtags in the description but the first 3 hashtags are the most important because YouTube takes these first 3 hashtags and adds them as clickable links above your video title:

YouTube hashtags

Clicking these hashtags takes you to a hashtag page showing all other videos on YouTube which use the hashtag, so be mindful of how active your competitors are on the hashtags you use and try to include a mix of competitive and unique hashtags:

YouTube hashtag page

We recommend assigning your first 3 YouTube hashtags this way:

  • use a brand hashtag (eg: #seoptimer)
  • use a popular category hashtag (eg: #seo)
  • use a niche / ownable category hashtag (eg: #seotools)

2. Video title

You can also add hashtags to the video title itself which will override any hashtags you add to the video description. This is the less common way to add video hashtags. Use this method if you’re wanting to really highlight a particular hashtag or if it’s important to your organization’s brand. Otherwise, in most cases, we recommend instead using the first method - add hashtags in the video description instead of the title.

Why are YouTube Hashtags important and do they work?

YouTube Hashtags aid the discoverability of your videos. Since YouTube is primarily a video search engine, it uses many ranking signals to determine the position of videos on the search result page. Hashtags is one of these ranking signals so using it together with other signals like the video title and description will help your video SEO efforts. Hashtags help provide context to YouTube about your video. Not only that, they help your viewers too by reinforcing the topics and themes covered in your video.

Backlinko performed a study into the effectiveness of Hashtags to aid search rankings:

YouTube hashtag study

Here we can see a correlation between videos that ranked #1 in search results and a higher proportion of those videos using YouTube Hashtags. There are certainly other factors at play, however this is reliable evidence that Hashtags should be used together with other YouTube SEO best practices.

What does the YouTube Hashtag Generator do?

The YouTube Hashtag Generator suggests hashtags based on your initial target keyword. Our advanced technology indexes the most popular trending YouTube videos that mention your keyword and finds adjacent hashtags based on what people are searching for. Using these hashtags can then help improve the discoverability of your video.

Simply enter your target keyword, then choose from a shortlist of trending hashtags. You can choose up to 15 but we recommend to focus on relevance (quality over quantity). As mentioned above, you should pay close attention to the first 3 hashtags as these will be shown above the video title. In most instances, 3 hashtags will be sufficient.

YouTube Hashtag Generator tool

Click each hashtag you want to use, then click ‘Copy Selected’. This will load the hashtag’s into your clipboard. Then go to YouTube and paste the hashtags into your video description.

How to use the Hashtags on YouTube?

Hashtags on YouTube work just like hashtags on other social channels. By placing the pound sign (#) in front of any word, you can turn it into a clickable hashtag. You are limited to just alphanumeric characters so you can’t use special characters or spaces in your hashtag.

For multi-word hashtags like “mortgage broker”, simply remove the space: #mortgagebroker. When using multiple hashtags in a string, there’s no need to add commas or semi-colons, simply use a space to separate hashtags or use the hashtags normally in a sentence. Both of the examples are correct below:

Video description example 1: #mortgagebank #mortgagebroker #homeloans Video description example 2: Here at #mortgagebank we strive to offer competitive #homeloans to first home buyers. Schedule a call with a #mortgagebroker to discuss your individual needs.

Hashtag Optimization Principles

The YouTube Hashtag Generator does most of the optimization for you by only suggesting hashtags related to your keyword that have the highest searches. However, we do recommend using several different keywords in the Generator to refine your hashtag shortlist.

You can find hashtag opportunities by experimenting with your keywords - try starting wide (category or industry level) and refine by tightening the keywords into sub-categories or niche topics. Doing this will help reveal further hashtag opportunities to add to your shortlist.

Don’t forget to run this process with competitors and understand the diversity of hashtags they use including any other channels in your niche such as news, publishers, influencers or vloggers.

How to Find More Hashtags for Your YouTube Shorts

Whether you're a seasoned creator looking to refresh your approach or a new content creator excited to hit the ground running, we've compiled a set of tried and tested hashtag strategies to help you find the best YT Shorts tags for your content.

1. Check Out the Trending Section on YouTube

The Trending section is like YouTube's pulse—showing you what's currently capturing viewers' attention. It's an ever-changing space of popular content.

Simply visit the Trending page on YouTube. Look for videos similar to yours and note the hashtags they use. For example, if you're posting a cooking short and see a trending video on a quick recipe, check out the hashtags they've included.

2. Use YouTube Suggest

YouTube Suggest acts like a sneak peek into the collective mind of your potential audience, revealing what they're searching for. It's a real-time insight into trending topics and interests.

Start typing a topic related to your video content in the YouTube search bar and watch the suggestions pop up. If your video is about DIY home decor, typing "DIY home" might bring up suggestions like #DIYHomeOffice or #HomeDecorIdeas.

3. See What Your Competitors are Doing

Your competitors are targeting a similar audience, so seeing which hashtags they use can provide a blueprint for your own strategy. It's a way to learn from the success (and mistakes) of others without having to go through it yourself.

Identify a few competitors (or even influencers) with a strong presence and similar content. Watch their most popular YouTube Shorts content and jot down the hashtags they use. If you're in the fitness niche and notice a competitor using #FitnessMotivation or #HomeWorkouts effectively, consider how you can incorporate these into your own posts.

4. Use Hashtag Generator Tools

There are multiple hashtag generator tools designed to help you find trending hashtags across social media platforms. These can provide insights into popular and relevant hashtags that you might not have considered yet.

Use tools like TubeBuddy, VidIQ, or Hashtagify. For instance, if you're creating tech-related content, inputting "technology" into Hashtagify might reveal associated trending hashtags like #TechNews, #Innovation, or #Gadgets.

5. Track Your Hashtag Performance

Understanding which hashtags bring in the most views and engagement on your Shorts content can help you refine your strategy over time.

Keep an eye on your YouTube Analytics to see how viewers are finding your videos. Note which hashtags correlate with increased discovery and engagement, and adjust your future content accordingly.

6. Join Online Communities

Engaging with online communities related to your content niche can reveal trending topics and the hashtags that accompany them.

Participate in forums like Reddit, Quora, or even Facebook groups to find relevant niche hashtags. For example, if you're into digital art, joining a digital artists' group on Facebook can help you see what topics are trending and what hashtags members use to share their work.

How to Add Hashtags to Your YouTube Shorts

Adding hashtags to your YouTube Shorts videos is simple. But if you’re unsure to start, here’s a quick tutorial on how to search the most popular hashtags on YouTube and add them to your video:

Step 1: Research and Select Your Hashtags

Start by identifying relevant hashtags using the strategies we've discussed. Aim for a mix of broad and niche tags to cast a wide net and reach the right audience for your content.

Step 2: Include Hashtags in Your Video Description

When uploading your Short, you'll have the option to add a description. This is where your hashtags will go. Enter the # symbol in the video title or description box.

Followed by the #, enter the topic or keyword you want to associate with your video. YouTube will then automatically suggest popular hashtags based on your input. You can also add some branded hashtags to further personalize your videos.

Note that you should begin with the most relevant hashtags, as only the first few are displayed in search results and previews. A good rule of thumb is to use about three to five hashtags to keep things focused.

Step 3: Save Your Description and Publish the Video

Once you’ve added all the hashtags, save your description and publish your video. Your hashtags will be displayed in the description at the bottom of your published video.

Observe the views and engagement of your YouTube Short for a while and update your hashtags or description if needed.

Remember: Don’t Overuse Hashtags in YT Shorts

Packing your YouTube Short’s description with hashtags isn't the secret recipe to going viral on YouTube. They’re a growth lever that may boost your visibility and get your YouTube Shorts videos in front of your target audience.

As of 2021, YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. Coming in second to Google. It is also reported by next year that YouTube/video search will likely take over Google search.

Do you need to optimize your YouTube videos?

Yes! YouTube SEO is incredibly tricky but once you get the hang of it, you will learn a foolproof way to rank every video you make. Why Are YouTube Tags Important?

Whens it comes to tags on YouTube, they are incredibly important as it allows YouTube to better understand exactly what your video is about.

Properly optimizing your YouTube video descriptions and YouTube channel is super important. SEO is one of the best things to learn if you need to learn how to make PASSIVE income.

You can find the best way to do this with the YouTube Freedom Toolkit .

Traditionally, Google has always found and ranked certain types of articles based on the keywords and relevancy of the article. However for YouTube, this isn’t as easy as they don’t have any text to reference.

Use proper titles, descriptions, keywords and thumbnails to make YouTube understand your content. From there, they will be able to place the video that is relevant to a certain search query or recommended video.

How To Pick Optimized Tags For Your Videos

Whenever I pick tags for my YouTube videos, I always use the TAB method. Say what?

The TAB method is as follows:

  • Target:  This first tag should be the target of what your video is about (for example, “vanilla cake recipe”)
  • Alternative: This is where you put in alternative tags that are relevant to your targeted keyword (for example you could use, easy vanilla cake recipe, simple vanilla cake recipe, cake recipe)
  • Broad: Last but not least is to put broad tags on what people might be searching for related to the keyword (for example, how to make vanilla cake, easy to follow vanilla cake recipe)

If you want to learn more, you can see this awesome video below which covers some actionable YouTube SEO tips.

Spy On Your Competitors

If you are stumped for tags on your YouTube videos, you can always go find what other successful videos are using for their own tags. While this is a bit if a sneaky method, it actually gives you some great ideas on things you may have missed and what you may be able to reverse engineer.

To do this, you want to find a video that is similar to your own that has got lots of views. Once you have found one, you then want to right click anywhere on the screen and click “view page source” .

Spy On Your Competitors

Once you have clicked that option, a new page should open that looks a lot like alien language. But don’t stress! We will be able to find what we are after.

After the new page opens, you then want to go CTRL + F and search for “ Keyword “. This will enable us to see what tags this successful video is using.

Capture the Keyword

As you can see from the above screenshot, this video is using the target tag, alternative tags and then more broad tags about the topic of vanilla cake. So now you can go ahead and copy some of these and implement them into your own video.

This is also a great method on how to show up in recommend videos which is how 45% of all creators get their views!

Say Your Keyword Throughout your Video

Another hack that you can do to boost the performance and SEO of your video is to say your target keyword and main tag throughout your video. So in this instance, my video is about vanilla cakes recipes, so I would want to use that in my tag and also say it in my video several times.

YouTube is becoming really smart in how they know what a video is about. Until recently, they only relied on tags. However, now they use voice recognition and subtitle your video (see below) to better understand the context of what your video is about.

Say your tag within your video

Use Tag/ YouTube Tools

If the above tips seem a bit too technical, then you are not alone! I myself am not a very technical person and love things to be simple. Fortunately for us, there are great tools out there like TubeBuddy which is a simple add-on to Google Chrome that allows us to see tags of other videos and where we can improve our own.

YouTube Tools

If this article has given some good information on the best YouTube tags, I would love for you to share down below on the type of tags that you decided to use on your next video! As flood waters continue to swell throughout neighborhoods in Kingwood, Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief Troy Finner traveled by helicopter to get a first-hand view of the situation Saturday afternoon.

“Houston residents benefit when all levels of government work together,” Mayor Whitmire said in a statement. “Together, we will get through these challenges. Let’s go to work!”

In the statement, the Mayor’s Office said that the purpose of the helicopter tour was to give Houston’s elected leaders a greater perspective of the damage in Kingwood and the potential resources the community will need in the coming days.

Jerry Seinfeld Visits ‘SNL’ to Hilariously Give Ryan Gosling Advice About Doing ‘Too Much’ Press

Jerry Seinfeld and Ryan Gosling have something in common: They’ve both recently been on lengthy press tours.

Seinfeld, 70, is currently promoting Netflix’s Unfrosted , which led him to appear on the Saturday, May 4, episode of Saturday Night Live . (The episode was hosted by Dua Lipa , who also served as the musical guest.)

“Guys, oftentimes when an actor is promoting a new movie — let’s say a Netflix movie — they have to do a lot of press,” Colin Jost began in the middle of his “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday. “Sometimes, too much press. Here to comment is a man who’s done too much press.”

Seinfeld appeared as the character in question, joking that he didn’t know where he was now.

“Was this a podcast?” the comedian asked Jost, 41. “Oh, live TV? Oh, my God. I gotta stop.”

Jost then pointed out that Seinfeld has “kinda been everywhere,” even The Rich Eisen Show .

“I wasn’t on Rich Eisen ,” Seinfeld quipped before realizing that he did appear on the sports broadcast after all. “I like Rich Eisen , I find him accessible.”

Jost then questioned how an actor, such as Seinfeld, can comprehend their schedule when they start doing “excessive press.”

“Well, that’s the thing. You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with people with these names Hoda [Kotb] , Mo Rocca , Chanel [and] Vlad,” Seinfeld explained. “Yeah, I talked to a guy named Vlad. And I know I can’t undo all the press I’ve done but I want to help other people. If you’re struggling with press, you’re not alone.”

He continued, “I’m talking to you, Ryan Gosling. When I started doing press for Unfrosted, I was like you: Funny, good-looking [and] now look at me? You think this is how I want to spend my 26th birthday? But you can get clean.”

Gosling, 43, just wrapped back-to-back press tours. Shortly after celebrating the 2023 juggernaut Barbie and performing its showstopper “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars in March, Gosling went right into promoting his next project The Fall Guy . The action flick, in which he costars with Emily Blunt , even led to a SNL hosting gig last month.

Jerry Seinfeld Visits SNL to Hilariously Give Ryan Gosling Advice About Doing Too Much Press

“It’s great to be back here hosting SNL . I’m here because of my new movie, The Fall Guy, with Emily Blunt. So, don’t worry: I’m not going to make any jokes about Ken because it’s not funny,” Gosling said in his April 13 sketch show monologue. “Ken and I, we had to break up [because] we went too deep and it’s over, so I’m not going to talk about it.”

To further reiterate how he’s ready to move on Ken, Gosling reworked Taylor Swift ’s “All Too Well” to be about the doll. (His Fall Guy character is a notable Swiftie in the film.)
