Event in north county on Oct. 12

A group of around 500 cyclists will be riding through the vineyards next weekend, as the Asti Tour de Vine kicks off in Cloverdale. In its eleventh year, the Tour de Vine is hosted by the Cloverdale Rotary Club and takes participants on routes through north county that vary depending on individuals’ chosen trip length — 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers or 100 miles.

The event both begins and ends at Asti Winery where, following the ride, participants will be treated to a lunch that’s included in the event price. While on the bike routes, there will be rest stops manned by five different nonprofits, who will have homemade food to give out to cyclists.

According to event chair Iris Konik, the first Tour de Vine was introduced as a way to help the Cloverdale Rotary Club pay to fix up Cloverdale’s Kleiser Park. While some of the money made still goes to maintaining the park, Konik said that Rotary now divvies it up between various local causes including being donated to help students, the homeless, the elderly, as well as to organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club.

Additionally, Konik said that each participating nonprofit received 5% of the event proceeds.

While past tours have seen participants from overseas, Konik said that the farthest travelers this year are from Florida and Massachusetts.

“I like the day of the event — seeing the people come,” Konik said. “I enjoy most when they come back and they just rant and rave about how beautiful our area is, how wonderful the rest stop food was. They sit there and they enjoy themselves and a lot of them thank us for putting it on. That’s my favorite part.”

Bike routes

While every bicyclist will start their cycling journey at Asti Winery, different bike routes extend to additional parts of north county as well.

The 25k begins in Asti and extends north to Cloverdale, with cyclists heading down River Road and making a series of turns, eventually heading back via Cloverdale Boulevard and Dutcher Creek Road.

The 50k follows a similar route, but the end of the ride extends farther west toward Lake Sonoma, before backtracking and heading to Asti through Dutcher Creek and Dry Creek roads.

The 100k and 100 mile routes both dip farther south. In addition to the Asti-to-Cloverdale ride, bicyclists will be directed down West Dry Creek Road and on to Westside Road. From there, cyclists will ride to Dry Creek Road from Kinley Drive, continuing on a series of turns that will put them on Geyserville Avenue for a 5-mile stretch.

The 100 mile differs slightly in the beginning from the 100k, as those looking for an extra challenge will head from the Lake Sonoma rest stop to Rockpile Road, tacking on an additional 25 miles of trip.

While the event was still open to participants as of press time, Konik said that she anticipates around 500 participants.

Early check-in for those already signed up will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Hamburger Ranch and BBQ, 31195 N. Redwood Highway, Cloverdale. Check-in on the day of the event will be at Asti Winery from 7 to 9 a.m.

The registration fee is $85 for adults and $40 for students ages 14 to 17. If the event isn’t sold out, participants can register the day of the event for $105.

Asti – Tour de Vine – Vineyard Spin

Posted on   october 25,2011   by john compisi.

asti tour de vine

Nothing says autumn in Sonoma Wine Country like cycling through the colorful harvest ready vineyards.  Those vineyards are alive with the activity of the harvesters, the air is filled with the smell of crush (yes, and fruit flies), the colors are unworldly as the vines turn from deep green to the kaleidoscope colors of fall and the roads are filled with cyclists trying to capture the season.  The weather cooperated with blue skies and moderate temperature in the 80’s.  The Asti Tour de Vine is the best wine country-cycling event in Sonoma County!

The Tour, sponsored by the Cloverdale Rotary Club, offered distances of 25K, 50K, 100K and 100 miles, aka the Rockpile Ramble.  Traveling from Asti  through Cloverdale, along the Russian River through the Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys  of northern Sonoma County and back to  Asti  for the celebration of finishing, regardless of the intended or actual distance riden!!  Perfection!!

The Cloverdale Rotary Club organizers did a fabulous job of coordinating rest stops which were provided by a variety of local community organizations at each of the stops…the Lake Sonoma Dam, the riding school near Dry Creek Road and Kinley Ave in Healdsburg, the Red Barn in Geyserville, and, of course, back at the beautiful and historic grounds of Asti.

The route is amazing with the vineyards turning from green to the many colors of fall…reds, orange, yellows, browns and purple (pictures never do justice).  Fall in northern California wine country is as spectacular and colorful as the famous leaf peeping hillsides of Vermont and other eastern states.   The hills on the route are fairly tough from a physical endurance perspective but the average rider can make it with some training.

The Asti to Cloverdale to the River Park to River Road and back to Asti is perfect for a warm up with some minor hills and moderate straight-aways until you get to Washington School Road…this hill was a butt kicker!!  This actually completes the 25K route.

Following Dutcher Creek Road to Dry Creek Road and to the Lake Sonoma Admin Center was brisk and, again, filled with vineyard vistas and fall colors.  The riders doing the 50K route continue along Dry Creek Road and then over Canyon and back to Asti.  The 100K riders turned on to Yoakim Bridge road and then followed West Dry Creek Road to West Side Road, near Madrona Manor and back to Dry Creek Road.  This two lane country road (West Dry Creek) cutting though the west side of Dry Creek Valley is nonpareil in terms of tranquility, beauty and pastoral visages.

After a quick refreshment stop at the Geyserville Red Barn (see above), the 100k route turns toward Geyserville and Highway 128 East through the vineyards of Geyserville, Jimtown Store  area and the Alexander Valley Road.  The first section after leaving Geyserville is so romantic and picturesque in any conveyance but so much more so on a quiet riding bicycle.  The middle section along Alexander Valley Road is a little disquieting with the volume of trucks and cars speeding by.  Things do return to a more pastoral feel as the route returns to Healdsburg-Geyserville Road back toward Asti.

Following Healdsburg Avenue back, about 15K, the 100K route ends back at Asti.  Approximately 500 entrants joyfully (maybe some not so joyfully) rode from the kick off at 7AM in the morning to as late as 4PM.  Seeing the historic entry to the Italian Swiss Colony at Asti made hearts sing and legs relax!

The finish line party at Asti, again expertly coordinated by the Rotary, was an excellent end to this cycling harvest adventure.  Penne pasta, salad, pulled pork and an apple crisp dessert with ice cream were a perfect ending to this fall event.  This carb loaded fare was accompanied by Cellar No. 8 Cabernet and Zinfandel and a nice selection of beer and soft drinks.  Door prizes and raffles were included to provide a perfect ending to this fall classic.

Mark your calendar for next years 5th Annual event.  The number of riders is limited and it does sell out!

About the Event

Join us for the 17th Annual NVRC/Herbie's Home "Town Loop" 4 Mile Run/Walk on August 5, 2023, at Bellefonte Area High School, Rogers Stadium Track in Bellefonte, PA. This event was created in memory of Jeremy Herbstritt, a 1998 Bellefonte Area High School graduate who lost his life in the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007. The event aims to honor his memory and give back to the community that supported his family during their time of grief.

This year's event will benefit the VTV Family Outreach Foundation's VTVCare program, which provides financial assistance to mass shooting survivors nationwide to help cover long-term trauma-related medical and mental health care expenses that insurance and other governmental programs do not cover.

The 4-mile course is wheel measured and begins and ends at the Bellefonte Area HS track. The course traverses the perimeter of the town of Bellefonte. The entry fee is $25 per individual event if postmarked by August 01, 2023, and $30 per thereafter and on race day. T-shirts will be guaranteed to the first 100 entrants.

On Friday evening, August 4, 2023, a pre-race dinner and roundtable discussion on mass violence and the unmet long-term trauma-related medical and mental healthcare needs of mass shooting survivors will take place. The VTV Family Outreach Foundation will present on their focus program, VTVCare. We invite community members, educators, politicians, and healthcare workers to join us in this important discussion intended to bring awareness to the long-term trauma-related needs of mass shooting survivors and changes we can implement that might halt the rising epidemic of mass violence in our society.

Race day registration and bib pick-up will take place on Saturday, August 05, 2023, beginning at 7 am at Rogers Stadium (Bellefonte Area track). Free parking is available at Bellefonte Area High School. Don't miss this opportunity to honor Jeremy's memory and support a great cause. Register today!
