A bit too far away for me unfortunately. I’m on the Power Tour FB group, and honestly, most the members are smart mouth judgmental know it alls. If the people who participate are as jackbagged as most on that group then I won’t partake no matter how close to me the route is.

hotrodfords said: I think its a great event, you guys are going to have a fantastic time! I've come to the conclusion I'll never do it. Even though Hot Rod Magazine was born in SOCAL; the creator of the event is a lifelong Californian - Frieburger - they have found every excuse in the book to not bring it to the west coast. Like ever. There are certainly those that have done it driving from the west coast, but its a 36 hour drive time for me to get to an east coast event. With a trailer, thats really 4-5 hard days. Here's your west coast tour, drive it any direction. I didn't bother with stop points because its such a target rich environment you could pick 200, and have each and every one be a significant point to the birth of hot rodding. I'd probably want Bakersfield/Famoso in there too. You could make a nice diversion to Rt66 also. View attachment 875206 Please document your escapades for the rest of us to follow along. My Dad and I did the 2019 Power Tour and had a blast. With so many people in the event you can easily choose who or who not to spend time with at the stops.

i get 5 days off per year.

Before the midnight massacre of print media, Car Craft had the Ant-Tour to balm our wounds. But that died with the demise of the magazine.

~2001 it was Detroit to San Bernardino roughly following Route 66. The trip was fun, including the side trip to do a track day in Alabama in the middle of it. It was over a week that year. I left San Bernardino Friday night at 9pm local time and was back at work outside Detroit Monday morning.

I did the Tour last year for the first time. I live in Seattle. My goal was the Tour and see America via small highways. Started June 3 and got home June 30. Drove by myself to Memphis where the Tour started. My son from Brooklyn flew to Memphis and did the Tour with me. My wife flew in to Atlanta and did the drive back with me. I took my 2014 Mustang convertible for the trip. It was absolutely amazing! A bucket list trip. If you are interested here is the blog I did. Hotrod Power Tour 2022 Allen

I decided to do it at the last minute so had no plans and no reservations. So every evening when the party was over I would drive to the next decent size town on the route. As I was out of the crowd I then didn't have issues getting a hotel room. Then I could be VERY leisurely in the morning and still be ahead of the main group.

Did it in 2019 with my freshly completed '65 with my dad. I'll be doing it again this year with my 5 year old son in the same albeit now sorted '65! That looks like a great route Its a blast.

Oh man I would love to do it.

I will be doing it this year for the 3rd time in my 71. I can't believe it is just a week and so away.

That is right through my backyard...too bad my car is in shambles...

bangshift power tour

I’ve wanted to do the power tour since I was a kid. I finally have a car for it but being self employed makes it difficult. Everyone thinks you can make your own schedule and do what you want when you’re self employed. Yeah, you can but if you’re not working, you’re not making any money. So it’s not just the cost of the trip.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year and it’s too late to transfer my long hauler ticket. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Steve Magnante Is Back And Selling Some Of His Collection! Buy The Funny Fairmont And Help Him Out. And Get A Cool Hot Rod At The Same Time!

Our friend Steve Magnante has been out of commission for a while as he has literally been fighting for his life from a bad brain infection, but he’s back! You may know Steve from all his years in the magazine world where he wrote for a ton of great magazines like Hot Rod and Car Craft, but in recent years he’s been the rain man of muscle car and classics knowledge on Barrett-Jackson’s TV auction shows. He’s also been making great YouTube content of his own, walking through junkyards full of great finds and sharing all the info on cool old rides. But at the end of last year we weren’t sure he was going to make it.

I first met Steve more than 20 years ago on Hot Rod Power Tour and was lucky enough to work with him a few times over the years. He’s a real treasure, one hell of a guy, and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to be sharing these videos with you now.

Thankfully, he had great doctors who didn’t give up on him even after putting him into a coma to try and fight this brain infection. To be honest, there were lots of folks who have known him for years who were not sure he’d pull through. I’m so thrilled to say that he is in fact on the mend and working at getting back to his normal self. Unfortunately there are huge medical expenses, and side effects from his condition, that are making it necessary for him to get rid of some of his collection and more. I wish I could snap my fingers and make Steve the guy that doesn’t have to worry about money or help, but that’s just not in the cards at the moment.

So in the video below he’s talking about the Funny Fairmont, an altered wheelbase Fox Body Fairmont he built years ago, that is now for sale and can be yours!

Sleeper Picks: RBC Canadian Open

Sleeper Picks

Change Text Size

Davis Thompson (+5500) … While the drought of first-time winners at the RBC Canadian Open isn’t as long as last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, it’s still been 15 years since Nathan Green was the most recent to break through in Canada’s national championship (at Glen Abbey Golf Club). Unlike the annual stop at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, this week’s tournament is nomadic, so it’s a different kind of impressive for how there hasn’t been another coronation since the Aussie. Thompson has finished second twice in 54 PGA TOUR starts as a professional, more recently at the Myrtle Beach Classic three weeks ago, albeit six shots back of Chris Gotterup, who is the most recent of seven first-time winners this season. Thompson is a star in the making and currently sixth in adjusted scoring with eight top 25s in 2024.

Erik van Rooyen (+800) … As of midday Tuesday, 35 in the field of 156 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club competed here in 2019. He was among them as a top-10 exemption via the PGA Championship. The South African opened with 6-under 64 and finished T20 in this tournament that week. Since his emotional win in Mexico last November, he’s kept the pedal down and has added a pair of top fives, the more recent of which just three weeks ago at the Myrtle Beach Classic (T4). Overall, he has three top 10s and another four top 25s this season, so he’s been performing as well as expected. The analytics help explain why from a technical standpoint. Currently 33rd on the PGA TOUR in greens in regulation, 17th in Strokes Gained: Putting and 20th in converting GIR into par breakers, the combination of which plays way up in a shootout.

Kevin Yu (+600) … Of the 20 golfers with as many as four top 10s this season, he might be the most unlikely given that he’s 81st in the FedExCup, easily the lowest-ranked among them. Of course, therein lies his value and attraction. His most recent top 10 was a T4 two starts ago at the Myrtle Beach Classic. He’s not higher in the FedExCup because he relies heavily on a cooperative putter, but the 25-year-old can golf his ball. He’s 12th in total driving, fifth in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, sixth in greens hit, T14 in proximity and T26 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. Given that the greens at Hamilton Golf and Country Club are relatively unfamiliar and new since the restoration, ball-striking is at a premium. That feeds into his proven firepower.

Brice Garnett (+450) … Connecting these dots requires no more than an understanding of his strength and its fit for the test. Forever one of the most underrated ball-strikers on the PGA TOUR, the 40-year-old found paydirt once again at the Puerto Rico Open in March. Both of his wins on the circuit have occurred on paspalum greens but his ability to control his ball flight and shape shots with so much regularity demands respect (and a unit) for this finish in his return to Hamilton Golf and Country Club, itself a payoff for shot-makers. He recently finished T18 at Harbour Town Golf Links, renowned for its requirement to work the ball both ways. And neither course asks the golfer to pull the driver often. Although the program to remove many trees on this week’s site was necessary, the century-plus-old design tipping at just 7,084 yards tosses a bone to the older guard who can’t win long-drive contests.

David Skinns (+225) … Sticking with the talent of a certain age, the 42-year-old from England seemingly has played with freedom and ease since a T4 at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. No doubt much of what he’s experienced since feels like a bonus as he’s piled on with six more paydays, including a pair of top 20s on his own ball. Largely balanced and stronger than you might think throughout his bag, it’s a pulse of his comfort level in his second shot on the PGA TOUR. He’s sharpest on approach with a kicker that he ranks T2 in par-3 scoring. The quartet of the one-shotters at Hamilton Golf and Country Club averaged over par in 2019, so he has an edge.

Rory McIlroy leans on favoured driver to power his way into Canadian Open contention

Leona maguire starts the us women’s open with a three-over par 73 to leave her four shots off the clubhouse lead.

The kickstart, when it came, was courtesy of the favourite weapon. Rory McIlroy had patiently plotted a route with no reward through the front nine of his opening round of the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Country Club in Ontario – nine straight pars – when he arrived on the first tee and unleashed a drive of some 355 yards.

When he got to his ball, in the right rough, all he needed was a gap wedge for the 57 yards to the pin. His approach finished four feet from the flag, and McIlroy – a winner over the same course in 2019 – rolled in the birdie putt. He was off and running, ultimately firing a bogey-free four-under-par 66 that propelled the Northern Irishman into contention.

“I know it’s a weapon,” said McIlroy of his TaylorMade Qi10 driver, which already helped him to win the Zurich Classic (with Shane Lowry) and the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour so far this season. “But, at the same time, I have to use it intelligently. I can’t just go and wing driver everywhere, especially on a golf course like this where there’s quite a lot of trouble. When I am able to hit good tee shots, I know that gives me a big advantage.”

McIlroy, indeed, rode his luck to some extent on the front nine (notably when hitting a wild iron shot off the 12th into the trees, where he managed to avoid the water hazard down the right which he played blind), having only played a pre-tournament nine-hole pro-am.

But, once he got that birdie on the first, his 10th hole of the round, McIlroy secured further birdies at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes to sign for that 66 which left him three shots behind early clubhouse leaders Sam Burns and Sean O’Hair who posted 63s.

McIlroy, who has opted for a heavier playing schedule this season which has brought its benefits of late, and with his quest for a career third win in the Canadian Open starting a four week stretch that also takes in the Memorial, the US Open and the Travelers, added: “I’ve played a lot, but it’s been good. It’s been, I’ve started to play my way into form and I’ve played well the last few weeks and hopefully I can just keep that going.”

3 birdies on his last 4 holes 👀 @McIlroyRory moves up to T4 @RBCCanadianOpen . pic.twitter.com/u3eIvZovUw — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 30, 2024

Séamus Power , who is also kicking off that same four-week stretch on the road, opened with a two-over-par 72 (three bogeys, one birdie) with some ground to make up if he is to survive to midway cut.

In the Women’s US Open at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania, world number one Nelly Korda – seemingly invincible of late after a run on the LPGA Tour that saw her win six of her last seven starts – endured a nightmare 10 on the par three 12th, only her third hole of the round, in signing for an opening 80.

Korda’s tee shot to the difficult short hole finished in a bunker before hitting her next shot into the water, the first of three dunked balls, as he ran up her septuple bogey: “I didn’t play well. I didn’t hit it good. Making a 10 on a par three will definitely not do you any good at a US Open . . .  just a bad day at the office.”

Korda’s group had waited some 30 minutes on the tee box as groups in front also struggled on the hole and was undecided on the club to play when it came her time. “Sometimes it’s not really good seeing the girls play in front of you. I kind of teed it up behind the tee box a little one club length back. I hit a six-iron and it just kind of penetrated through the wind and it went into the back bunker. I kind of had a leaf under my ball, so when I hit it kind of rocketed through. I couldn’t really do anything about that. Yeah, just hit some really bad chips over and over again,” explained Korda.

In difficult scoring conditions, the early clubhouse lead one under par 69 was set by French amateur Adela Cernouseka with a group which included Germany’s Alex Forsterling (a two-time winner on the LET this season), Sei Young Kim and amateur Megan Schofill a shot further back on 70s.

Leona Maguire opened a three-over-par 73 while Lahinch amateur Áine Donegan signed for a first round 76.
