Inspired by the prehistoric Baobab tree, the cone-shaped lodges appear to be floating mid-air, raised just 3.5 meters (about 11 and half feet) above ground. The condensation area, or base of the shelters, is where you’ll enter the space. Taking a curved staircase one floor up, you’ll enter a living area anchored in natural beachwood furnishings and surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows that drench the space in sunlight. The primary bedroom and a balcony are on this level as well, offering lush landscape views. Two levels up, you’ll find a sundeck surrounded by your own private panoramic pool.

world's first eco-tourism safari resort in africa produces its own water from air

Mask architects unveils baobab luxury safari resort.

MASK Architects has designed the world’s first eco-tourism resort in Africa which autonomously produces its own green energy and water for the community. Fitted with Air to Water technology powered by transparent solar device-covered curtain glass, BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort takes shape as a cluster of beechwood lodges, drawing on the typology of a community settlement and the form of the ancient baobab tree. Creating a serene getaway rooted in nature, the resort invites visitors to reconnect with the rich environment and interact with the wildlife that freely roams around the settlement.

Part of a wider restorative scheme, the project not only seeks to create an idyllic getaway in nature, but is also the first step in the architects’ plan to create a sustainable and ecological community in Africa. The resort collects and distributes water to deprived communities, as well as helping to enhance infrastructure, agriculture, and manufacturing. The architects state: ‘With this project, our goal is to make the most basic need of water accessible rather than a luxury experience, and to prevent hunger, thirst and the diseases and deaths its causes.’

producing green electricity and water autonomously

International firm MASK Architects has designed the BAOBAB Safari Lodges to be ecologically friendly and sensitive to its environment while creating a luxury safari camping experience inspired by the prehistoric Baobab tree. Using local materials and injecting local culture, the safari echoes secluded community settlements, reinterpreted as a luxury camping and tourism experience.

Seeking to build an eco-friendly community powered by green energy, MASK Architects has integrated Air to Water technology into each multi-modular living lodge structure. The system produces water from humidity, extracting and condensing moisture in the air to produce healthy, purified drinking. Air filters are placed inside wood covered aluminum lattice poles that parametrically encircle the facade of each lodge. Air and humidity then passes through these linear channels and is filtered, condensed, and processed through an additional multi-step filtration system in the system room.

While offering a distinct luxury and unique experience for the resort’s guests, the autonomous water network will at the same time serve those in Africa who are struggling with access to water; when enough purified water is collected, it will then be distributed to communities in need through a network.

reconnecting with biodiversity and the environment

Raised 3.5 meters above ground and nestled into their engulfing natural environment, the shelters create a sense of security and serenity. Meanwhile, the feeling of floating high amid the tree line echoes MASK Architects’ concept to create these safari lodges as at one with the wildlife where thresholds between the indoors and outdoors are distorted. For a unique experience the pool has been integrated to the top floor, providing panoramic vistas of the safari zone. Along the lower boundary, an interaction balcony allows guests to feed the wildlife that roam around the settlements. Installed with toughened glass on the floors, these give a different perspective of the animals sheltered below.

The exterior structure is crafted from local beechwood to create a tropical safari resort. Around 40 structural pillars support the floors and also house the transparency glass and light-weight material in between. Designed for easy mobility, the modules are arranged in a formation that can self-sustain as an integrated community or create a larger eco-friendly community called ‘Eco Safari Lodges’. These structures have been designed to invite visitors to connect with nature and wildlife in a remote setting.

Inside, the lodges contain all amenities for a comfortable living experience. They can also be used in many different sectors, from housing, restaurants, bars, lounges, spa’s, offices, fitness and educational centers, staff facilities, security, watchtower posts, and more.

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in Africa

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in Africa

MASK Architects has designed the world's first Eco-Tourism based BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in Africa which produces its own water autonomously by using Air to Water technology  that is powered by transparent solar device covered curtain glass.

The aim of the project is not only to create a unique luxury residence, but also to seek innovative, sustainable and environmental solutions to the problems based on constructive and restorative project generation processes arising from the geological, climatic and environmental factors in which the project is located. With this project, our goal is to make the most basic need of water accessible rather than a luxury experience, and to prevent hunger, thirst and the diseases and deaths its  cause. Designers say; water sources would not be a luxury reserved for the people ; water is the source of life for all people. It is our mission to provide a unique experience to users by blending beautiful, attractive and smart designs with technology and to respond to the needs of users living in the region. The water needed in Africa has turned into a luxury. Water should not be a luxury and should be accessible to everyone. With this project, we wanted to contribute to communities who need water in Africa. This versatile project has been designed to meet the needs of all segments.” We envision our concept project to help the local communities in Africa that are remote and secluded from any infrastructure and amenities. With this project we want to help build infrastructure and community, agriculture, manufacturing and water sourcing. We want to turn this into an experience where people from all over the world can come on a working holiday, to be able to give back to the community and help the local communities. The water needed in Africa has turned into a luxury. Water should not be a luxury and should be accessible to everyone. With this project we have designed, we wanted to contribute to the communities that are in need of water.  From small settlements to large towns and cities, we can and are able to build eco-settlements of the future to help with the growing issues in Africa with poverty, housing, jobs, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, health and innovation. We can build up on the sustainable settlements and help erase all the issues and start building a better future for the locals.  Integrating tourism into our planning of settlements is important because it allows people to support the local economies and to involve the locals into the project. This will allow us to build environmental awareness and how to minimize impact by raising funds and providing direct financial benefits for conservation while consulting stakeholders and the public in interest. Providing financial benefits and power to the local people will bring around a lot of interest and growth. It will help us support human rights and create democratic movements that are thinking about the future and for the sustainability of the future.  The aim is to build an eco-friendly community using the latest technologies to help with sourcing green energy. Also we have integrated technology that will allow us to source water from the air. Air to Water  technology  is integrated into each multi-modular living lodge structure. Each multi-modular living lodge has its own technology to produce water from humidity and optimized dehumidification techniques to extract and condense moisture in the air to produce healthy, purified drinking. Self-sustaining multi modular lodges' curtain glass is covered by transparent solar panels which can produce electricity by itself. While offering a luxury and unique experience to the users, at the same time, the autonomously produced water network will be provided to the people who are struggling with thirst in Africa. Thanks to the air filters placed inside the wooden covered aluminum poles that parametrically surround the facade of each module will let air-intake enter into these linear channels. The channels which are integrated into the linear lattice stripes structure extract humidity from the air which is filtered, condensed, and then processed through an additional multi-step filtration system in the system room which is located at+1.50 level; producing “purified great tasting water. Thanks to letting the local air from channels which are located at the exterior facades of each module produces a  Water is a water capturing system that absorbs moisture from the air and converts it into drinking water using condensation and solar energy technology. Air is pulled by linear channels which are located at the center of aluminum lattice stripes on the facade of lodges. Each linear strip has its own filter and local air then passes through these filters. Three-Dimensional Multilayer Vertical Filament Meshes which are integrated in the channel at 45 degrees to capture water drops. Thanks to the slope of the channel, water droplets will pass through certain filtering processes and will be collected in the tank located at the center and foundation of the module. When the amount of water in the water tank located at the central foundation of each module reaches a certain amount, the water collected from the air will be transmitted to the areas needed in Africa as a network.

Our BAOBAB Safari Lodges will be enclosed in a self-sufficient community where there will be land to grow fruits, vegetables, to source water, for farming and animals, and facilities to make and sell food such as cheese, bread, meat and milk. We want to be able to build a community which can provide and feed the surrounding communities which are starving and in poverty. We are able to give work to the local people as well in agriculture and manufacturing and build a working community working alongside with people who have traveled from around the world. We aim that our concept eco-lodges can be delivered in any remote area, and be the start to building self-sufficient communities. We have designed them to be expandable and flexible to any situation and terrain. The project will be affordable, scalable and adaptable. Using resources sustainably, we aim to reduce the impact of over-consumption and waste. Maintaining biodiversity within the settlements, binding nature and landscape together with wildlife. The BAOBAB Safari Lodges is our new concept designed to be ecologically friendly to the environment and create a luxury safari camping experience inspired by Baobab trees. The Baobab is a prehistoric species which predates both mankind and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Taking in local materials and culture, we have designed a unique safari lodge that echo’s culture and settlements designed to be a community in any secluded place. Providing a luxury camping experience with our new safari lodges, we have created lodges with pools, wildlife interaction sections and living spaces. Designed to interact with the surrounding natural areas, to combine indoors and outdoors together, to nestle into the wildlife and trees. The lodges will be raised 3.5 meters off the ground to create a secure living safe zone. The experience of feeling up and above and to meet the tree line echoes our concept to create these safari lodges within the wildlife. Instead of having the pool on the ground floor, we have transferred and created a pool on the top floor and high level to enhance the experience and provide a vista panoramic view of the safari zone. We have designed a lower boundary interaction balcony that allows an experience to interact with the wildlife that surround the settlements. To allow users to enjoy the interaction and to be able to feed the wildlife is the experience we want to enhance for the concept.  The structure of the building consists of a center that houses the staircase to access different levels of the lodge, it also houses the pump for the water to be pumped up and drained down from the pool. The exterior structure is created with local wooden materials, the 40 structural pillars to support the floors and also to house the transparency glass or light-weight material in between. We have incorporated internal foldable blinds that would create privacy when needed and also to allow cooling from the shade in weathers that reach high temperatures.  The lodge ideally has been designed to house areas for living space. The lodges can be used for couples, small families or large groups. Areas that house storage for luggage and clothing, a small bespoke bar for keeping snacks and drinks, an internal bathroom with enclosed toilet, sink and shower. A Multi-useable living room, working area, and bedroom. 30 square meter pool and plunge deck area with an outdoor shower. The lodges that are nestled in the wildlife, with beach wood exterior styling to create a tropical safari resort development. The modules have been designed for easy mobility and to be built up and constructed in large or small lodges. The formations of the modules can self-sustain as a community integrated together to create a small or large eco-friendly community “Eco Safari Lodges”. The idea of creating these luxury eco safari lodges is to be able to bring more people to have interest in wildlife and to experience living in areas secluded and remote with the wildlife. It is seen as a luxury to experience it, but also it can educate and elevate people’s understanding of nature and wildlife. The Lodges can be used in many different sectors, from housing, restaurants, bars, lounges, spa’s, offices, fitness centers, educational centers, safari park staff facilities, security and watchtower posts and more. The balconies that surround the lodge where the users can interact with the wildlife and feed them, can be installed with toughened glass on the floors to give a different perspective and view of the animals below. While the animals below take advantage of the shade, the viewers can view the wildlife from above.

Creating Water and Electricity on Its Own

The prehistoric Baobab tree served as the inspiration for BAOBAB Safari Lodges' luxury safari camping experience, which aims to be environmentally responsible and attentive to its surroundings. The safari reflects remote community settlements, reimagined as a luxurious camping and tourism experience using local materials and local culture.

Mask Architects baobab resort creates water and electricity on its own

Air to Water technology has been included in each multi-modular living lodge structure by MASK Architects in an effort to create an eco-friendly community that is powered by green energy. The device creates water from humidity by drawing out and condensing moisture from the air to create safe, clean drinking water.

Front of each room in Baobab eco resort

Each lodge's front is parametrically encircled by aluminum lattice poles with wood coverings that contain air filters. After passing through these linear channels, the air and humidity are then filtered, condensed, and put through an extra multi-step processing procedure.

A Human Purpose Behind the Baobab Project

The autonomous water network will help individuals in Africa who struggle to get water while also providing a distinctively luxurious and distinctive experience for the resort's visitors. Once enough cleansed water has been gathered, it will then be transferred to areas in need through a network.

A Resort That Will Help Reconnect With Nature

The resort by MASK Architects provides a sense of safety and tranquility since they are elevated 3.5 meters above ground and nestled into their all-encompassing natural surroundings. The notion to design these safari lodges as one with wildlife where barriers between the indoors and outdoors are blurred is echoed by the impression of floating high amid the tree line.

Baobab a resort to help reconnect with nature

The pool has been incorporated onto the top level for a distinctive experience and offers panoramic views of the safari area. An engagement balcony at the bottom perimeter allows visitors to feed the animals that wander through the towns. These are installed with reinforced glass on the floors and offer an alternative viewpoint of the animals protected below.

More About the Project

A tropical safari resort is created using local beechwood for the external framework. The floors are supported by about forty structural pillars, which also house transparent glass and lightweight material in between. The modules, which are built for simple mobility, are stacked in a pattern that can either build a larger eco-friendly community known as "Eco Safari Lodges" or self-sustain as an integrated community. These buildings were created to encourage guests to interact with the outdoors and wildlife in distant locations.

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort by MASK Architects

BAOBAB

MASK Architects has designed the world’s first Eco-Tourism based BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in Africa which produces its own water autonomously by using ‘Air to Water technology’ energy powered by transparent solar device covered curtain glass. That will be a part of our new concept that we envision to create a sustainable and ecological community in Africa.

BAOBAB

We envision our concept project to help the local communities in Africa that are remote and secluded from any infrastructure and amenities.

BAOBAB

BAOBAB

Self-sustaining multi modular lodges’ curtain glass is covered by transparent solar panels which can produce electricity by itself.

BAOBAB

BAOBAB

We aim that our concept eco-lodges can be delivered in any remote area, and be the start to building self-sufficient communities. We have designed them to be expandable and flexible to any situation and terrain. The project will be affordable, scalable and adaptable. Using resources sustainably, we aim to reduce the impact of over-consumption and waste. Maintaining biodiversity within the settlements, binding nature and landscape together with wildlife.

Source by MASK Architects.

This wild new 'treehouse' resort is designed to offer a one-of-a-kind stay: 'It's seen as a luxury to experience it'

Traditionally, tourism puts pressure on local environments, including depleting natural resources.

Pretty soon, adventurous travelers can choose to sleep up in the trees at the BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in South Africa, an eco-friendly option now in the works.

What is the BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort?

The resort was designed by Italian firm Mask Architects . Construction is forthcoming, but renderings show cone-shaped treehouses that sit atop the canopy.

But these are no ordinary treehouses — they are designed to produce their own green energy and water, making them completely sustainable. They are covered with curtain glass and transparent solar panels .

While these structures look like they are made of wood, they are actually built out of aluminum poles that have a wooden coating. Air filters pull moisture out of the humid air and then purify it to provide drinking water for resort-goers.

BAOBAB also will include a raised swimming area and an interaction deck where people can feed animals like giraffes.

"It is seen as a luxury to experience it, but also it can educate and elevate people's understanding of nature and wildlife," Mask Architects says on its website.

Why should you care about BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort?

Traditionally, tourism puts pressure on local environments, including depleting natural resources.

Unfortunately, tourism can also contribute to pollution and waste problems and often leads to the overuse of water . For example, an average golf course in a tropical country uses enough water to support 60,000 rural villagers .

BAOBAB is trying to reverse that trend by distributing water to nearby remote communities that are secluded from the national infrastructure.

"With this project, our goal is to make the most basic need of water accessible rather than a luxury experience, and to prevent hunger, thirst, and the diseases and deaths it causes," the Mask Architects says on its website.

The resort exemplifies a growing trend in the tourism industry. With travelers becoming increasingly interested in eco-responsible travel, hospitality experts are now saying that sustainable tourism is crucial to the future of their sector.

"Sustainable tourism practices play a crucial role in shaping the future of the hospitality industry," Wayne West III, president and CEO of Newport Hospitality Group, wrote in an article for Hospitality Net. "By providing authentic experiences that respect local communities and minimize environmental impact, we can attract more tourists while ensuring long-term sustainability for our industry."

"We aim that our concept eco-lodges can be delivered in any remote area, and be the start to building self-sufficient communities. We have designed them to be expandable and flexible to any situation and terrain. The project will be affordable, scalable and adaptable."

Using resources sustainably, the studio aims to reduce the impact of over-consumption and waste. Maintaining biodiversity within the settlements, binding nature and landscape together with wildlife.

Inspired by ancient Baobab trees, MASK Architects takes cues from local materials and culture, the studio has designed a unique safari lodge that echo’s culture and settlements designed to be a community in any secluded place.

Designed to interact with the surrounding natural areas, the lodges combine indoors and outdoors together, to nestle into the wildlife and trees.

Raised 3.5 meters from the ground, the lodges create a secure living safe zone. The experience of feeling up and above and to meet the tree line echoes the concept to create these safari lodges within the wildlife.

Instead of having the pool on the ground floor, the architects have transferred and created a pool on the top floor and high level to enhance the experience and provide a vista panoramic view of the safari zone.

MASK Architects reveals world's first eco-tourism resort producing its own water from air in Africa

The architects have designed a lower boundary interaction balcony that allows an experience to interact with the wildlife that surround the settlements. To allow users to enjoy the interaction and to be able to feed the wildlife is the experience we want to enhance for the concept.

The structure of a lodge consists of a center that houses the staircase to access different levels of the lodge, it also houses the pump for the water to be pumped up and drained down from the pool.

The exterior structure is created with local wooden materials, the 40 structural pillars to support the floors and also to house the transparency glass or light-weight material in between. The architects have incorporated internal foldable blinds that would create privacy when needed and also to allow cooling from the shade in weathers that reach high temperatures.

An 30-square-metre pool and plunge deck area with an outdoor shower.

According to the architects, the lodges can be used in many different sectors, from housing, restaurants, bars, lounges, spa’s, offices, fitness centers, educational centers, safari park staff facilities, security and watchtower posts and more.

The balconies that surround the lodge where the users can interact with the wildlife and feed them, can be installed with toughened glass on the floors to give a different perspective and view of the animals below. While the animals below take advantage of the shade, the viewers can view the wildlife from above.

A Truly Memorable Holiday”

A must stay Resort. The resort is very well maintained. All the staff are very polite, warm and helpful. They have marvellous customer service. The main attractions which are the animals are also very welcoming and very well taken care of. Staying here is the closest you will ever get to living in a Safari. Will definitely come again in future. Thank you Baobab staff.

A destination that is perfect for children”

There are 2 types of rooms, Safari and Hills view. I recommend choosing Safari view because from the balcony you can see and hear the animals all day long. In addition, the entire hotel, both indoor and outdoor, has good photo spots that are guaranteed to make children and their mothers happy. There is also a breakfast party with giraffes, but you have to make a reservation first. Overall, I am very satisfied and have stayed here several times because my children never get bored.

Dear Esthi, Warmest Greetings from Baobab Safari Resort Prigen! Thank you for choosing us as your preferred accommodation and taking your valuable time to review us. We are delighted to read your generous comment and know that you enjoyed the accommodation, especially about our facilities. There is no better rewards than to know that our guests appreciated our hard work and I am glad to share your kind words and appreciations with all the team members. Your feedback would tremendously be helpful to us for improving our products and services. Once again, on behalf of the entire hotel team, I would like to thank you for your recent stay. We look forward to welcoming you back at Baobab Safari Resort in the near future. Sincerely, Lies Yuwati General Manager

awesome safari themed stay”

We stayed here during the long weekend, a bit of mistake since the place is so crowded with vast majority of family with little children. You can imagine the noise and queue for breakfast, dinner etc. The place is recommended during the weekend where you can watch open air movie (bring jackets!), feed giraffe/meerkat/hippos etc but beware of the queue. the only downside is the staff there was not informative where they didnt inform that you have to buy ticket for feeding giraffe, or take pictures etc. they also didnt enforce physical distancing nor remind the guests to wear masks. There's also only one tiny lift for one side of the building so you can wait for 10 - 15 minutes during check in / out time. Oh, and the food there is a bit bland, like most hotels do. Overall, such a great time to stay. me and the husband promised ourselves to return again with our children someday. Thank you.

Best hotel for families, kids, and animal lovers.”

We stayed at Baobab last weekend. We arrived around 2 pm and went straight to the safari. We booked a holiday package with Agoda and got 2 tickets for the safari and circus, a 15% discount for other tickets, and a delicious and complete breakfast. The hotel provided transportation to the safari. The bed sheets and pillows were soft and comfortable. We had a delicious and worth-it African BBQ dinner for IDR 120,000 per child and IDR 180,000 per adult. Breakfast for children was IDR 98,000. Everything was worth it. We also got free popcorn/ice cream and got to feed giraffes and ride horses for free. Elephant rides were IDR 150,000 per person. Overall, the best hotel 👍👍👍

AOBAB luxury safari resort in Africa

M ASK Architects has designed the world’s first Eco-Tourism based BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort in Africa which produces its own water autonomously by using Air to Water technology  that is powered by transparent solar device covered curtain glass.

This versatile project has been designed to meet the needs of all segments.”

We envision our concept project to help the local communities in Africa that are remote and secluded from any infrastructure and amenities.

Self-sustaining multi modular lodges’ curtain glass is covered by transparent solar panels which can produce electricity by itself.

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort

  • Mask Architects

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort – MASK Architects. We envision our concept project to help the local communities in Africa that are remote and secluded from any infrastructure and amenities. With this project, we want to help build infrastructure and community, agriculture, manufacturing, and water sourcing.

MASK Architects baobab

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort – MASK Architects. From small settlements to large towns and cities, we can and are able to build eco-settlements of the future to help with the growing issues in Africa with poverty, housing, jobs, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, health, and innovation. We can build up sustainable settlements and help erase all the issues and start building a better future for the locals.

DSM 2022 AWARDS WINNER LIST

Integrating tourism into our planning of settlements is important because it allows people to support the local economies and involve the locals in the project. This will allow us to build environmental awareness and how minimize the impact by raising funds and providing direct financial benefits for conservation while consulting stakeholders and the public interest. Providing financial benefits and power to the local people will bring much interest and growth. It will help us support human rights and create democratic movements that are thinking about the future and the sustainability of the future.

TECHNOLOGY – BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort – MASK Architects.

The aim is to build an eco-friendly community using the latest technologies to help with sourcing green energy. Also, we have integrated technology that will allow us to source water from the air. Air to Water technology is integrated into each multi-modular living lodge structure. Each multi-modular living lodge has its own technology to produce water from humidity and optimized dehumidification techniques to extract and condense moisture in the air to produce healthy, purified drinking.

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort – MASK Architects. Self-sustaining multi-modular lodges’ curtain glass is covered by transparent solar panels which can produce electricity by itself. While offering a luxury and unique experience to the users, at the same time, the autonomously produced water network will be provided to the people who are struggling with thirst in Africa. Thanks to the air filters placed inside the wooden-covered aluminum poles that parametrically surround the facade of each module will let air intake enter into these linear channels. The channels which are integrated into the linear lattice stripes structure extract humidity from the air which is filtered, condensed, and then processed through an additional multi-step filtration system in the system room which is located at+1.50 level; producing “purified great tasting water. Thanks to letting the local air from channels which are located at the exterior facades of each module produce a  Water is a water-capturing system that absorbs moisture from the air and converts it into drinking water using condensation and solar energy technology.

Safari Resort

Air is pulled by linear channels which are located at the center of aluminum lattice stripes on the facade of lodges. Each linear strip has its own filter and local air then passes through these filters. Three-Dimensional Multilayer Vertical Filament Meshes are integrated into the channel at 45 m? (I will check) degrees to capture water drops. Thanks to the slope of the channel, water droplets will pass through certain filtering processes and be collected in the tank located at the center and foundation of the module. When the amount of water in the water tank located at the central foundation of each module reaches a certain amount, the water collected from the air will be transmitted to the areas needed in Africa as a network.

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort

BAOBAB Luxury Safari Resort – MASK Architects. Our BAOBAB Safari Lodges will be enclosed in a self-sufficient community where there will be land to grow fruits and vegetables, to source water, for farming and animals, and facilities to make and sell food such as cheese, bread, meat, and milk. We want to be able to build a community that can provide and feed the surrounding communities which are starving and in poverty. We are able to give work to the local people as well in agriculture and manufacturing and build a working community working alongside people who have traveled from around the world.

We aim that our concept eco-lodges can be delivered in any remote area, and be the start to building self-sufficient communities. We have designed them to be expandable and flexible to any situation and terrain. The project will be affordable, scalable, and adaptable.

The Baobab is a prehistoric species that predates both mankind and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Taking in local materials and culture, we have designed a unique safari lodge that echoes culture and settlements designed to be a community in any secluded place.
