Manufacturer Information

Although relatively few Barth motorhomes were manufactured, the Barth name is well known among aficionados of high-end motorhomes.

The company’s history can be traced to Bob Barth, who owned the Beeline Trailer Company. In 1963, Barth left Beeline to form the Barth Trailer Company, which was founded on the principle of building quality all-aluminum travel trailers. At the time, many travel trailers and almost all mobile homes used a wood frame with aluminum sheathing. Barth produced his all-aluminum trailers in his Milford, Indiana, factory from 1963 until 1968, when he sold the company to Mike Umbaugh.

Umbaugh, whose business experience was in banking and not RVs, saw the Barth Company as a solid investment opportunity. Immediately after acquiring the company, Umbaugh changed the focus from travel trailers (which he eventually phased out in 1970) to the growing motorhome market. Rather than try to compete with companies like Winnebago and GMC that sold a relatively affordable product, Umbaugh decided to produce a high-end motorhome for upscale buyers.

The Barth Company never produced more than 300 units per year, many of which were custom designed for the owners. Barth’s sales plummeted during and after the 1973 energy crisis as did the sales of all motorhomes. The company emerged from the crisis and altered its long-term vision by dedicating itself to manufacturing custom coaches designed for commercial purposes like mobile offices, medical support vehicles, dental labs, libraries, and remote TV production units. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, Barth continued to manufacture motorhomes and specialized motor coaches but eventually ceased operations.

In 1998, the company’s assets were sold to Keith Leatherman, owner of Leatherman Construction, who intended to revive the company. Leatherman spent approximately half a million dollars retooling manufacturing equipment and making plans to move the factory to Albion, Indiana, but due to a lack of orders, he officially pulled the plug on February 13, 2001.

Thanks to Barth champion David R. Bowers, a wealth of Barth information can be found at  http://www.barthmobile.com . A club for loyal Barth owners, the Barth Rangers, meets from time to time

We got the Barth in October 2009, it had been parked in the woods by a field for the last 12 yrs or so. It has an aluminum frame so it’s still rock solid.

This trailer belongs to Jeff and Nanci of Brea, CA. Striking 1965 Barth Trailer. The handles are longways, very unusual.

The condition is surprisingly good. The exterior has some sun fade on the black paint, and the aluminum show some oxidation but fresh paint and a buff job on the aluminum, and this would be a showpiece. The tire age stamp is 1019, and the house and engine batteries show 2019. The seller says everything works as it should with the exception of the fridge not cooling. Stock #271486 LOTS OF TRAVELING LEFT TO DO!!! COMFORTABLE, SPACIOUS LAYOUT!! LOADED WITH STORAGE!!! "The Magnificent" Barth Regal 25CB was built in the classic tradition of the finest motorhomes of the day. The aluminum riveted frame was built on the Chevrolet steel chassis in the same method as jet aircraft. One of the reasons it is in such fine shape for the age. The interior has hand-rubbed hardwood cabinets with Corian countertops. A 4KW generator and house batteries were replaced in 2019. The tires were also replaced in 2019, being only 29 months old. It is surprising how well everything looks with only moderate wear on the furniture and carpet. The Chevy 454 is a workhorse that continues to deliver 390 horsepower upon demand. You have to see this to believe it. If you like it, you better get an offer in. This will not last at this price and condition. Reason for selling is lifestyle change.

This Barth is posted for sale there. Along with a history of my ownership of this unit. (Search for post MJ56 or 1987 Barth Regal) . This is a fine example of a Barth Regal SE with 80000 miles. Under the hood is a Chevy 454 on a P30 chassis with Tag Axle and airbag suspension on all axles. It is a classic and sturdy motorhome drives nice livability is even nicer. It needs a few things fixed but in great shape for its age. . Tires are in good shape but 10 years old. I recommend new steer tires before highway use. Exhaust leak in header collector header needs replacing. . Top end of motor was rebuilt by previous owner but lower end was not rebuilt. There is a slight knock presumed to be a rod bearing not main bearings or crank shaft. One airbag on tag axle is not holding air presumed to be a leak on bag or airline. The rear ladder is damaged and removed. Re-install or not. Body shows signs of some corrosion due to its age but very little damage. . Unit has 3 furnaces that arent working but havent been fully tested. Suspected minor control or ignition problem. Water heater is propane and was converted to electric element also. Thermostat for that was not installed properly on tank. With re-install electric should work again and propane system can be fully tested. Again suspected control or ignition problem. Under sink water filter canister burst from freezing needs to be replaced or disabled. This is a separate tap for drinking water. The rest of the plumbing system works fine. An auxiliary heater that runs from radiator had been disabled. Air horn system needs a compressor. Aftermarket cruise control is not working. Usually a simple fix. . The layout is such that an entire family can enjoy the many features without bumping in to each other. Spacious accommodations will greatly enhance any trip whether it is for a day or a week and all of your meals can be taken care of in the fully equipped kitchen with ample sleeping and nap space. . CC Capsule: 1974 Barth Motorhome – Old School Rig For The Next Generation

barth travel trailer

Those of you you’ve been around for a while know that in addition to trains, planes, buses, bikes and tractors, we also can’t resist motorhomes. The older ones are disappearing fast, and who else is going to document them while they grace our streets, often being lived in by folks with no other home? This rather stately old Barth caught my eye, with its handsome paint scheme and a bit of ribbed texture to its flanks. Beats some of the decrepit old Class-C el-cheapo hulks that are favored by the permanent city-street campers.

barth travel trailer

Barth was an old-time trailer, slide-in camper and RV manufacturer in Milford, Indiana, going back to 1963. They tended to make larger (in the old-time meaning of that) and better-than average quality motorhomes, and have a bit of a loyal following to this day.

barth travel trailer

Actually, from the “hip” sculpture on the front, this one doesn’t look like a permanent abode, but more likely a rig with which to go to the many music and “alternative culture” festivals in the PNW.

barth travel trailer

Barth seems to have had a strong affinity to Chevrolet drive-trains, as this steering wheel and instruments make clear. Many wore a big bow-tie on the front grille. Undoubtedly, there’s a 454 hiding under the engine cover. I don’t know the exact year of this rig, but from this Barth-lovers site , it appears that 1973 or 1974 is a good call.

Wow what a dash, much more upscale than the typical plywood or particle board normally used to support that instrument cluster. Also a pretty elaborate ladder for the back to work around the taillight and the bump out on the back. Definitely a Cadillac of motorhomes, it even has triple AC.

My sole experience with a motorhome was in the late ’80s when the industrial design firm I worked for was hired to redesign the dash and console for the Wanderlodge (don’t remember the specific model, other than it was a very expensive vehicle).

We were loaned one for a couple weeks, and made good use of it, both for design reference as well as lunch runs to Fuddruckers.

Found a copy of the rendering we did of our design concept:

Fixed; thanks!

I guess I never really paid much attention to these. I do remember the bustle-butt – if this was unique to Barth, then I have seen them out and about. The only one of these I ever drove was a late 1970s Pace Arrow that my father rented/bartered for a 1979 family vacation. Also a Chevy or GMC powertrain.

My grandfather was the president of the Barth Rangers club in the late ’70’s or so. His rig was a ’68 Travel Trailer. Barth’s are very nicely crafted vehicles. Though my grandparents have passed we still use the old Barth. It’s currently permanently parked on a camp ground near the lake waiting for the next family get away.

avatar

The name “Barth” sounds perfect for this vehicle. I’ve never heard or seen one of these rigs before but I like it. It appears to be sporting what I assume to be the original Chevrolet aluminum wheelcovers which are very difficult to find in decent shape.

To have and old school 29 footer in this present time could not be in favor of a 30 year old motor home. The current economy, the oil price on the world market doesn’t have any good news for her. But she will always be a part of me. After reading so many entrée like this I’m now aware that there are people like me love “Barth”. This will keep me inspired that I will always have a place to call home.

I wish I could say that I find this attractive to look at. It’s better looking than the Winnebago of the same vintage. But still, that’s not saying much. The only Barth Motorhome I’ve seen that looks attractive is the MCC Diesel motorhome. Now *that’d* be the ultimate in motorhomes.

Nice How much would it take to get it?
