Craft Brewery Tour in Yorkshire with Brewtown Tours – Review
Setting off on a Brewery Tour
I met five other female Yorkshire bloggers at noon outside Leeds railway station. Our driver and guide Mark told us that although he has more men taking the tours, in fact it is mainly women who buy these tours, and often as gift vouchers. Mark was inspired to start Brewtown Tours after his experiences of visiting craft breweries in Australia, but I’m certain that Yorkshire is much more fun!
Personally I’m not a wine drinker – it gives me ocular migraines and temporary blindness so I avoid it completely. It’s no surprise therefore that I’ve been a beer drinker all my adult life. I am over the moon to finally get beer onto my blog, and this is a pretty stylish way to do it! It really did feel quite luxurious to be driven around and try such a wide range of brews.
A few of my fellow bloggers were not sure if they would enjoy beer quite as much as their usual tipple, but Mark told us about some of the flavours such as rhubarb, and it sparked a lot of interest. It was my mission on the tour to find a drink to complement Christmas dinner. Up to now I’ve never found a beer that goes well with turkey .
Yorkshire Heart Brewery
Our first stop was Yorkshire Heart at Nun Monkton, between Harrogate and York. There’s actually a vineyard here too but we sampled about five beers in the barn. We learned a little about their history, plans and brewing methods. In my opinion this brewery specializes in lighter, sharper flavours and citrus notes. Several brews were really punchy and this appealed to the non-beer drinkers in our group. I do think that the days of mild creamy bitter are a bit old-fashioned, and Yorkshire Heart certainly know how to attract new beer drinkers. I settled on their Christmas brew “Santa’s Little Belcher” as my choice to try on Christmas day.
Quirky Ales, Garforth
Our next stop on the brewery tour was Quirky Ales in Garforth. It was a cold winter day and in their little bar was a roaring wood-burner, so we settled in happily to warm up. Quirky Ales challenged our tastebuds by getting us to taste and smell the difference between hoppy and malty brews, and between very pale and porter ale too. We had a go at tapping and bottling ale, which was a fun hands-on experience. At this brewery I got some good advice for my Christmas turkey dinner and I bought a few bottles of Ruby Ale.
Northern Monk Brewery
Our last stop on the tour was Northern Monk in the Holbeck area of Leeds. The old red brick mills of this area have been renovated and the cobbled courtyards add charm. This brewery has a large refectory bar upstairs but first we visited the vats in the brewery downstairs. Northern Monk has several visiting brewers and aims to support local creatives. In the bar we tried a number of dark ales, some served with a keg-y fizz, which was a new experience. The beers on sale to take away are in cans rather than bottles but I can’t quite remember what made me choose a mocha flavour for my husband. I didn’t pick anything for the Christmas turkey as by this point I felt I had imbibed enough samples.
Brewtown Tours
Mark drove us back to Leeds station at the end of the tour. Your chosen brewery tour can also start and finish in York. I must point out that it was my own choice to write this blog post and not a requirement of accepting the trip. I bought all my own take-outs. It’s my own pleasure and opinion to recommend Brewtown tours whether for yourself or as a gift voucher, perhaps for a birthday or a date such as Valentines.
We have a Winner!
Quirky Ales Ruby absolutely nailed it for Christmas dinner! The mild chestnut notes were perfect with roast turkey. I’m really pleased to have found this solution and I’m sure it would go well with roast chicken and pork too.
My fellow bloggers on this trip were: Sophie from MamaMei (trip organiser), Sarah from SunshineSarahxo , Charlotte from CrunchCorner , Jennie From LifestyledbyJennie and Amy from AMumFullofDreams .

This would be a fab alternative date for Valentines, looks like lots of fun and great to find a beer to go with Sunday lunch!
You’re right, it’s a nice treat.
This sounds like great fun! I am not a beer drinker, but my husband would love this. When I do buy him beer I always try and get independent breweries.
Independent breweries are brewing some great new styles, it’s worth checking them out I agree!
This sounds fun, I live slightly close to Yorkshire, definitely, my dad would love this type of tour.
Great, keep it in mind!
Brill Janet, looks like fun and I now have an idea now for when friends come to visit
I bet you’d love it!
I dont drink beer but my husband would love a brewery tour, especially with all of the sampling of the beer! it sounds like a fun day!
It was a lot of fun, it’s very sociable too.
What fun! I’d love to do something like this. Probably with my Dad.
Bring a whole crowd! There’s lots of interesting stuff to find out too.

The tour will start up at the Brewery at 1pm with the chance to see how their award-winning beers are made, how the beginning process of whisky making is done, followed by, you guessed it, a tasting of the award-winning beers!

Everyone over the age of 6 is welcome to join a tour. We cannot allow anyone under the age of 6 into the still house . Therefore they cannot join the tour. This includes babes-in-arms.
The stills are in action on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. However very occasionally, for technical reasons, there will be times when we are not distilling on those days.
We love our furry four legged friends however as we are a working distillery, we can only allow Assistance Dogs into the distillery building. This includes the distillery shop and the Pot Still Coffee Shop.
Our Daily Distillery Tours last 60 minutes (at 11, 1 and 3 everyday). The Distillery Deep Dive is 90 minutes. And our Brewery and Distillery Tours take around 3 hours.

Across the UK, there are countless breweries. Including everything from small craft operations to multinational businesses who’s beers are drunk across the world. In this article we are looking specifically at breweries in Yorkshire.
Yorkshire has a rich brewing heritage and is renowned for being a relative mecha for beer lovers with brews of all tastes and varieties available. In fact, people have been brewing in the UK as far back as 54 BC with the arrival of the Romans. Fast forward over 2,000 years to 2018 and brewing is more popular than ever, with countless breweries creating their own special, delicous brews.
In this roundup, we’re taking a look at some of the best breweries in Yorkshire, many of which you can visit, and enjoy their products at the source!

22 Harry St, Bradford BD4 9PH
The Salamander Brewing Co. was founded in 1999. Their small brewery is a former pie factory, situated just a couple of miles east of Bradford city centre. One of the orginal founders, Dan Gent is a true expert in the brewing industry. Prior to setting up Salamander Brewing Co. he worked as head brewer for a number of other companies. He even has a brewing-related PhD.
They have brewed hundreds of beers over the years and they keep on adding to their range to tempt the taste buds of their loyal customers. Their beers are available at a wide range of establishments across Yorkshire, including North Bar in Leeds, The Fat Cat in Sheffield and The Fleece Inn, Haworth.
We really like their Golden Salamander. It’s a golden premium ale with a refreshing citrus hops flavour. It won a silver medal at the Great British Beer Festival back in 2011 and has remained a firm favourite with their customers.

As their relationship and passion for beer grew, they moved back to the UK and set about creating the Little Valley Brewery. Their range of beers is eclectic and they have something available for all tastes. They’ve recently rebranded but they’re still a very recognisable brand.

Timothy Taylor’s is one of the oldest breweries on this list. It was established in Keighley in 1858 before moving to their present site”The Knowle Spring” in 1863. They cite their success and longevity to their ethos of not accepting any less than the best.

They’re extremely passionate, and their back to basics, minimalist branding is refreshingly simple and really allows them to stand out on the pumps and shelves. Scarborough Brewery is a family owned micro-brewery operating on the Yorkshire Coast in the seaside town of Scarborough.
Having been in operation since 2009, they’ve developed an eclectic and ever changing range of beers, trying their hand at various different blends and producing delightful results.
You can find them in craft beer bars and pubs all over Yorkshire. Their branding, as you may expect from a seaside based company has a distinctive nautical theme with a creative, colourful twist. Their range covers everything from Porter to Golden Pale Ale and everything in between.

Magic Rock Brewing really pops on the shelves due to their unusual, dare I say “quirky” and impactful branding. It screams creativity and what’s even more impressive, is that the creativity of their artwork is mirrored in the taste and execution of their beers. They started out in Huddersfield in 2011 and have always focused on delivering great beers.
The success of Magic Rock Brewing resulted in them moving to a bigger facility which features a 4,000 sqft Tap room and canning facility. If you’ve not tried their beers yet, what’re you waiting for!
Common Grounds – a triple coffee porter with hints of toffee and vanilla (alc 5.4%)
Contact: 01723 367506 Opening Times: Tuesday – Thursday: 4pm – 10pm; Friday: 1 – 11pm; Saturday: 12noon – 11pm; Sunday: 12noon – 9pm. Available to visit: Yes
Rudgate Brewery Ltd , 2 Centre Park, Marston Moor Business Park, Tockwith, York YO26 7QF
Rudgate Brewery was established in 1992 and its original home was a former ammunition building at RAF Marston Moor Airfield. The name of the brewery comes from the roman road ‘rudgate’ which runs through the airfield. This road led the Vikings through the Vale as they defeated the Romans and the Viking-themed branding of Rudgate Brewery pays homage to this.
The brewery has expanded and developed into a more modern facility since 1992, and the brand has received several industry awards including the CAMRA Overall Champion of Beer in 2009.
In celebration of their 25th anniversary, Rudgate launched their Oak Aged Ruby Ale. It’s a rich and nutty ale with an ABV of 5.6%
100 Kirkstall Rd, Leeds LS3 1HJ
During the 12th century, Cistercian monks founded Kirkstall Abbey and began the area’s brewing legacy with the construction of their brewhouse. In the 19th century, the old Kirkstall Brewery started life, following the traditions laid down by the monks of the abbey. Today’s Kirkstall Brewery was established in 2011, near to the locations of both of Kirkstall’s original breweries but has since moved to a more modern facility.
They have had a truly exciting year, launching new beers and new experiences for their customers, including a Brewery Tap that enables people to try beer fresh from their brewery.
Dissolution IPA was brewed in memory of the dissolution of Kirkstall Abbey by Henry VIII in 1539. It’s a classic india pale ale with a hoppy kick and a citrus finish.

Unit 3, North Hill Road, Dishforth Airfield, Dishforth, North Yorkshire, YO7 3DH
After a stint travelling the USA, head brewer of Bad Co returned to North Yorkshire armed with a vast knowledge of brewing. After successfully testing his concoctions in the Blind Jack’s pub in Knaresborough Paul teamed up with David Brown, a local businessman and set about creating the brand of beers which is now available across the UK.
Since founding in 2014, the Bad Co has enjoyed great success, winning the covetted Gold Award for Overall Best Beer at York Beer and Cider Festival with their Comfortably Numb beer.
Bad Co is another exceptional example of how branding can make a beer stand out, their beers have a subtle rock n roll feel, which musters up thoughts of the open roads of the USA and is exceptionally cool.

11 Of The Best Yorkshire Beers You Need To Try
Us Yorkshire folk are known for not mincing our words, and when we asked you what the best Yorkshire beers in God’s Own Country were you kept it short and sweet. And, unsurprisingly, the most common answer was “A free one”. But, for those Yorkshire folk who don’t have short arms and deep pockets, there were a lot of amazing cask beers named on the list.
There is a lot of history in Yorkshire brewing with the likes of Sam Smith’s who have been around longer than anyone can remember to Bradfield Brewery, which started in 2005, relatively new in comparison. Take a tour of God’s Own Country with our list of some top-notch cask ales to enjoy. If you’re looking to keep it session this summer, we’ve got you covered’
Check out our list of the best beers in Yorkshire
1. timothy taylor – landlord.
Brewed at Knowle Spring Brewery in Keighley, West Yorkshire, this classic pale ale has won more awards than any other beer. It’s won both CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain and the Brewery Industry Awards Gold Medal four times. It has complex citrus flavours and a hoppy aroma.
There is something sentimental about a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord that just makes it taste that extra bit special. Call it nostalgia, or call it great brewing, just don’t call time at the bar when you find a pub serving a pint of Landlords.
Location: Knowle Spring Brewery, Queen’s Rd, Keighley BD21 1AW
2. Black Sheep – Best Bitter
One of the best session beers in the North of England, the stunning amber nectar that is Black Sheep Best Bitter delivers real flavour. Hailing from North Yorkshire in the Harrogate region, this beer was first brewed back in 1992 it has become a firm favourite with Yorkshire folk, held in esteem as a legendary Yorkshire bitter.
From the choice of hops, you get a wonderful bitter offering with a grassy freshness and a powerful peppery punch and a subtle sweetness from the malts counteracts the bitterness of the hops.
Location: Wellgarth House, Wellgarth Court, Crosshills, Masham, Ripon HG4 4EN
3. Theakston – Old Peculiar
One of the most well-known ales in the country, Theakston is a stunning cask ale that some call the essence of British brewing. Its name is a nod to Masham’s unusual ecclesiastical status as a ‘Court of the Peculier,’ as well as a nod to the beer’s powerful flavour. Yorkshire’s ‘Lunatic’s Broth’ was a popular nickname for it for many years.
Old Peculier is a lovely, yet simple beer made with a substantial blend of the best pale, crystal, and roasted barley, two bitter hops, and the majestic and noble ‘Fuggle’ hop to make an incredible full-bodied beer with subtle cherry and rich fruit overtones.
Location: The Brewery, Masham, Ripon HG4 4YD
4. Bradfield Brewery – Farmers Blonde
Found in the Peak District, Bradfield Brewery’s home is located on a busy working farm in the idyllic village of Bradfield. Their number one beer, Farmers Blonde is an award-winning tipple which has notes of summer fruits and citrus making it an easy-drinking ale.
Started back in 2005, they’re now a hugely successful outfit that brews over 100,000 pints of beer a week! That’ll take some supping.
Location: Watt House Farm, High Bradfield, Sheffield S6 6LG
5. Ossett Brewery – Yorkshire Blonde
The beverage is a pale session ale that pays homage to the gorgeous Yorkshire heartland, which serves as the inspiration for everything this brewery produces. On the taste, this pale ale is full-bodied, well-rounded, and slightly sweet. Late in the boil, a hefty infusion of Mount Hood hops results in a subtle fruity scent.
Born in 1998 the independent brewery prides itself on using a mixture of science and art to craft incredible ales that have allowed them to establish themselves as one of the best Yorkshire beers.
Location: Low Mill Rd, Ossett WF5 8ND
6. Saltaire Brewery – Blonde
Found in the 18th Century village of Saltaire, the light and refreshing taste of Saltaire Brewery’s signature Blonde has been highly praised for the ale’s balance of soft malt flavours with subtle spice from Bohemian Saaz hops.
The award-winning brewery has a single aim to create new beers whilst brewing their best loved beers to a high level. Starting back in 2006, they’ve manged to make huge waves in the beer community whilst retaining the tradition of brweing high quality ales.
Location: Unit 7, County Workshops, Dockfield Rd, Shipley BD17 7AR
7. Abbeydale Brewery – Moonshine
Its signature and most popular pale ale Moonshine has been made since 1996, when the brewery blazed a trail to America to explore with hops never previously seen in the United Kingdom. Moonshine is still a clear favourite across the board after more than two decades.
With Willamette, Delta, Citra, Chinook, and Centennial hops, this pale ale is nicely balanced and ideal for any occasion. Golden Ale was a multi-award winner and bronze medalist at the 2018 Champion Beer of Britain Awards.
Location: 8 Aizlewood Rd, Sheffield S8 0YX
8. Kirkstall Brewery – Three Swords
A brewery in Leeds making modern, flavourful beer, inspired by the brewing heritage of Kirkstall. Kirkstall’s Three Swords is a very pale and spectacularly thirst quenching beer. Brewed with three different hops resulting in a delightfully citrus nose.
Location: 100 Kirkstall Rd, Leeds LS3 1HJ
9. Neepsend – Blonde
A relative newbie compared to some of the others in the list established in 2015. Neepsend Blonde is the brewery’s flagship session ale. The mellow, east drink has a dry finish
They make a range of beer in cask and keykeg, with a concentration on hop driven pales displaying some of the greatest and boldest hops sourced internationally alongside our one core beer, Neepsend Blonde, sourcing their hops from all over the world.
Location: Unit 13, 92 Burton Rd, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8DA
10. Great Newsome Brewery – Sleck Dust
Hailing from Hull, the brewery’s most popular beer is the session blonde Sleck Dust a light-coloured session ale that is easy to consume. Sleck is known to have a floral note you won’t find in other beers, thanks to a precise, well-guarded combination of Pilgrim and Northern Brewer hops.
The brewery claim they don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, keeping it simple, using superb natural ingredients to make beer that you can sit back and enjoy, without even thinking about it.
Location: Great Newsome Farm South, Frodingham Ln, Winestead, Hull HU12 0NR
11. Sam Smiths – Old Brewery Bitter
Samuel Smiths Brewery is the oldest brewery in Yorkshire and is still going strong today. With their grand attention to detail and a focus on creating a good ol’ fashion pub atmosphere with the traditional settings and roaring fires. There isn’t much that time has changed over the hundreds of years of it being open. This is why there is no surprise they’re still flourishing today.
Their oldest and one of the best Yorkshire beers is Old Brewery Bitter, which is brewed using hard water drawn from the original well sunk in 1758. It is fermented in stone Yorkshire squares to create a full-bodied malty, toffee-ish tasting, creamy beer of unique character.
Location: Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster) High Street Tadcaster LS24 9SB

WELCOME TO WOLD TOP BREWERY
Where our vision is simple; we want to make great tasting beer, using home grown, and sustainably sourced ingredients for the rest of Yorkshire and the world to enjoy!
To create this, we’ve spent the last few decades working hard to refine and improve our craft to bring you a range of beers that are full of character and taste.
HERITAGE & SUSTAINABILITY
Our family has farmed 600 acres high on the Yorkshire Wolds for generations and our aim is to continue to do so! Sustainability is key, we want to work in balance with nature so we grow trees and hedges to offset the carbon footprint, we plant areas for birds and wildlife, we consider the bees that are essential for the pollination of the crops and we use crop rotations to keep the soil in good heart. We also use renewable energy from our own wind turbines and have our own water supply from natural chalk aquifers under the farmland.
AWARD-WINNING BEERS
We have won many awards for our beers over the years and are proud of our range of all year round and special edition cask, keg and bottled beers that include Wold Top Bitter, gluten free beer Against the Grain and best selling favourite Scarborough Fair IPA.
PERFECTLY BALANCED
We want every pint of Wold Top to be enjoyed as much as the previous one, so we balance our malts and hops to give flavours, aromas and tastes that can be enjoyed time after time, pint after pint.
We live, work and play in a wonderful area of Yorkshire and want to maintain this balance for future generations. Hence growing our own barley in the most sustainable way we can, sourcing our power from the wind and drawing our water from underground aquifers deep in the chalk.
As a company we also balance our impact on a broader spectrum too. We employ local people who contribute back into the local economy and we support other local businesses, venues and events as much as we can.
Give and take. Perfectly Balanced. Wold Top.
