Interview: Billie Marten on her new album ‘Drop Cherries’ and record-store tour
Hayley Lawson
Billie Marten is a folk singer-songwriter with a honey-sweet voice impossible not to adore. Prior to her upcoming release of ‘Drop Cherries’ and record-store tour, Impact ’s Hayley Lawson was lucky enough to interview her.
As soon as Billie answered the phone, I could tell that she was a truly lovely person, with a polite and chatty disposition which made her so easy to talk to. We discussed her pre-performance rituals, inspirations, songwriting, and some of her favourite memories. It was such an incredible experience chatting with her, and I’m so pleased to share what I found out.

When asked about her pre-performance rituals, she claimed, “I have to ignore the gig entirely until I actually have to walk on stage. Sitting in the green room with the band talking about absolute nonsense… Because it’s such a crazy thing to do as a human, the more I think about it the more I don’t want to do it. So it’s kind of like a distraction technique to me that I think works.”
“It’s much more ‘welcome to my world’ rather than ‘does anyone want to listen to me?'”
This prompted me to ask her about her reaction to performing on stage, and whether Billie experiences stage fright. She said, “I definitely used to. It was a real problem – like, I’d feel physically sick and I wouldn’t be able to stop shaking. I feel like I’d kind of sabotage the performance because I felt like I was failing… Everything’s much better now. The more you do it the easier it gets, as with most things, and I’m just learning that you don’t have to try and impress people. They’re there because they want to see you and it’s much more ‘welcome to my world’ rather than ‘does anyone want to listen to me?’”
I found this comment really important to share as it indicates that things do get easier, which made me think it may have been hard for her as such a young person to go big online. I asked her about this. She described it as “deeply confusing”, but it told me about her stage name, which “comes from John Marten, who is my dad’s favourite artist.”
I asked her whether this was what inspired her, and if so then what was her greatest push. “It was certainly mum-driven. She would often just film me doing little covers at home, and then one of them just sort of did something online, and people from London started to talk to me and it was sort of out of my control, but I could have said no at any point.”
writing songs is “very sporadic, it kind of comes when it wants to”
When asked about her songwriting process, Billie stated, “I can’t not write from personal experience. I’m actually really bad at storytelling from someone else’s perspective and I struggle to write about things that aren’t directly happening in my life.” She said that writing songs is “very sporadic, it kind of comes when it wants to and I’m learning just to give myself time and space until it arrives and that is incredibly freeing. I’ll just be going about my day and then just get this really physical urge and it’ll just happen out of nowhere.”
With approaching tours, I wondered what Billie does to give herself this space and sort of freedom when she isn’t writing or performing. Her wholesome response was, “anything to do with the home – I guess I love having that kind of nesting, domestic way of living. I just find it really calming because obviously I do a lot of travelling and kind of high-pressure things and my home is very much my own; so I love gardening and cooking and reading and horse riding (I’m really into that). Just things that make me happy.” Obviously, it is super important for people to put their own wellbeing first, so it was great to hear about how she does this!
I then went on to ask about the most important aspects of her career, including songs, tour memories, and gig memories. She claimed that her most important song was Cursive. “I remember it being so deeply personal and melancholic… I think it’s the most emotional for me because I’m recognising how small a person I was back then and how much I was struggling and now I can sing it in a totally different way and a totally different mantra, which seems to help people in the room at that time and it’s almost like a complete turnaround of self.”
When asked about her favourite tour memories, she mentioned her tour of America in an RV. “There were just really great moments of waking up in Walmart car parks and thinking ‘What state am I in now? Where am I?’ I love camping and being outdoors. I loved just waking up and doing something so seemingly corporate at the end of a day that started out with kind of not anything. Sometimes you’d wake up to frosty hills in Denver and then we’d wake up near Venice beach in LA.” This truly does sound like a surreal experience!
“they kind of did all the harmonies and the background music and then I sang along to them”
Billie seems very fan driven. After claiming that she loves when people talk to her and communicate with her at gigs, she referred to a New York show that was her first headline. “There was a point where they were asking for this song, Liquid Love , and it’s not really possible to do with just me so when they started singing it and they kind of did all the harmonies and the background music and then I sang along to them and yeah, I’ll never forget that.” With this, I truly hope I get to see Billie Marten live someday, as I believe the experience would be unlike any other!
All in all, chatting with Billie was so lovely and I felt as though she was very open and honest, which you can also see through her music which is so emotionally raw and real. Seeing performers as remote and different from the rest of us is an easy habit to fall into, but hearing about such personal and mundane experiences from someone I find to be so incredible was really inspiring.
She performed on 11 th April at Rough Trade in her record-store tour and will be stopping at Rescue Rooms in Nottingham on 22 nd May – and I absolutely feel like both of these should not be missed!

Billie Marten announces new album and record store tour

Billie Marten has today shared ‘ I Can’t Get My Head Around You ’, a brand new track taken from her upcoming fourth record ‘Drop Cherries’ – out 7th April via Fiction Records. ‘ I Can’t Get My Head Around You ’ received its radio debut this morning on Lauren Laverne’s BBC Radio 6 Music show this morning.
Marten explains of ‘I Can’t Get My Head Around You’: “This is very much a cruiser. One to turn up really loud on the long drive out of town or back home. I wrote the chorus way before the verse, had it for months and whenever I’d pick up a guitar it would reappear. The sentiment expresses a deep sense of homecoming, arrival at where you’d like to be, and also a slight implausibility of discovering a new era of gladness. I truly adore the band’s playing on this, so sweet, so natural, so alive.”
Recorded entirely on tape in Somerset and Wales late last summer, ‘Drop Cherries’ marks the very first time that Billie Marten has both written and co-produced (with Dom Monks) one of her records; following critically-lauded 2021 album ‘Flora Fauna, Feeding Seahorses By Hand’ (2019) and ‘Writing Of Blues and Yellows’ (2016).
‘Drop Cherries’ lead single ‘This Is How We Move’ debuted in January and another track ‘Nothing But Mine’ arrived last month, with support streaming in from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, DIY, Dork, The Independent, The Line Of Best Fit, Stereogum, and more. ‘This Is How We Move’ and ‘Nothing But Mine’ also received widespread national radio play from Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins and Steve Lamacq at 6 Music, Sian Eleri and Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1 and Dermot O’Leary at BBC Radio 2.
Billie will be embarking on a record store tour in April that sees her appearing in Brighton at Resident in Kensington Gardens on Sunday 9th April from 5:30pm. Fans have the options of watching her instore performance with a friend for £11.99 in total which includes a single copy of her ‘Drop Cherries’ album on CD OR they may wish to purchase a standard vinyl (or transparent red) copy of the album for £24.99 and this too includes two entries into Resident in order to watch her live set. For further information, click HERE .
After this Billie will then embark on a headline UK and North American tour beginning in May that includes a double date at London’s Lafayette on 26 & 27 May. Tickets for these shows are available HERE .

Billie Marten ‘s fourth studio album, Drop Cherries , is a beautiful, tender offering, ideal to be supported by a record store tour across the UK. Removing barriers between artist and audience, instore shows offer an intimate connection, particularly suited to acoustic music, in the naturally welcoming environment of a vinyl record shop. Billie said “I love vinyl, I love vintage, and I love you all”. We caught Billie ‘s show half way through the nine show run at Vinilo record store in Southampton, UK.

There were around 35 people in the shop, a good turn out for a lunchtime show on Easter Sunday, the majority with the newly purchased album waiting to be signed. The initial intensity of the closeness between fans and artist was dispelled as Billie encouraged those that wanted to, to sit and get comfy. It was a perfect chilled Sunday vibe.
As well as songs from the new album, including the lovely “Arrows”, Billie also included some oldies, and encouraged requests from the crowd; a favourite of which was “Live” from her debut 2016 album Writing of Blues and Yellows. The final song was a treat to hear live, played on her tiny Casio keyboard (named “Timmy”), from the new album, the delicate “I Bend to Him”.
Drop Cherries album was recorded entirely on tape in Somerset and Wales late summer 2022, and released on 7th April 2023. Billie wrote and co-produced (with Dom Monks) the album.
Billie Marten is touring in May with an eleven date run across the UK and Ireland, the final two dates in London already sold out.

Watching live music is always a treat, but every so often you get to see a performance that feels like a real privilege. For me, that’s often when it’s an artist doing what they do best, without lots of production, so you can hear exactly what makes them special. That’s not to say I don’t love a live music experience with all the bells and whistles (I really do), but I’ve found that many of the moments when I’ve really fallen for what an artist does tend to be when they’re performing at their most unaccompanied.
That’s why I leapt at the chance to see singer songwriter Billie Marten play at Southampton’s Vinilo last weekend. I’ve loved her beguiling indie folk for a while – it’s lyrical and poetic and you can’t help but relax to it, but it’s never sickly sweet and always rich in composition. The pared back informality of a record store gig seemed the perfect way to experience it live.
The date was one of several in-store gigs to mark the release of Drop Cherries, Billie’s fourth record and the first she’s both written and co-produced (with engineer Dom Monks). Since being discovered through her YouTube performances at just 12 years old, Yorkshire-born Billie has garnered a loyal following and wide critical acclaim.
Alongside the rest of the crowd, we settled around the corner of the store where Billie would be performing, flanked by a wall of vinyl covers. She greeted us as she took up her spot at the microphone, guitar in hand, quipping that she was about to bring the happy mood down. Instead she drew us in with a truly spine-tingling vocal and stripped back acoustic renditions of tracks old and new. Billie’s voice is soft and rich, and her live performance really showcased the clarity of her vocal and the gorgeous catch in her voice that I just adore.
After kicking things off and encouraging us all to get comfy and sit on the floor, she treated us to a mix of songs from her back catalogue, including the light and summery Blue Sea, Red Sea , the more melancholy Vanilla Baby and the wistful La Lune . Next up was Mice, one of my favourites from 2019 album Feeding Seahorses by Hand. It’s a slow and soulful song, and I don’t think I was alone in being completely spellbound by her performance, made all the more absorbing by the intimacy of the setting.
Asking for a request from the audience, she then played another fan favourite – Live , from debut album Writing of Blues and Yellows. Listening to this one always gives me goosebumps so it was such a treat to hear it live and up so close. I love the line, “I wanna stay out all night, say hello to the dawn / Creep back to bed, they’ll never know I was gone” – and at that moment it perfectly captured the sense of experiencing something secret and special that I think we were all feeling.
Switching back to new material, Billie gave us a soothing version of Arrows before performing recent single I Can’t Get my Head Around You , a mellow acoustic ode to the complete bewilderment of falling in love.
For the final couple of songs, she swapped her guitar for a tiny Casio keyboard she’s affectionately nicknamed Timmy. After demonstrating a couple of Timmy’s most comical sound effects, she ended the set with the raw and vulnerable I Bend to Him , echoing its production exactly on Drop Cherries and providing a captivating note to end on. Watching Billie perform at such a cosy gig was the perfect way to spend Easter Sunday, and I can’t remember the last time I left a show feeling so serene.

Billy Strings Outlines Debut Live LP and Fall Tour, Including Halloween 2024

Billy Strings has unleashed a wave of news, including details on his first-ever eponymous live album, Billy Strings Live Vol. 1 , due on July 12 via Reprise Records. Notably, the tracking list will be kept under wraps leading up to the release–building intrigue and excitement surrounding the impending collection. Relix and BillyBase have also teamed up to co-host “Guess The Tracklist,” offering prizes, including “Free Tickets For Life,” for those who correctly assume song inclusions on the future set. Also featured in today’s announcement is an outline of Strings’ fall tour.
Strings’ already-announced summer tour picks up with a one-off performance featuring Chris Thile at Telluride Bluegrass Festival on June 20. After, he and his touring band will pick up a series of single-night, back-to-back performances and festival gigs, ultimately coming to a close after a California twofold on August 23 and 24, respectively. With nearly a month off, Strings picks up his Fall tour with the return of his annual Renewal event to Buena Vista, Calif., on Sept. 27-28.
Keeping with the artist’s preferred schedule of two-night stands in single locations, he will take his live show to Clarkston, Mich., for a pair of shows at Pine Knob Music Theatre on Oct. 4 and 5. Sticking with the aforementioned format, Strings and company will play at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Oct. 11 and 12. Next, Oct. 18 and 19 will be spent at The Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville, Ala., before moving to Baltimore for concerts on Halloween proper, Oct. 31, and Nov. 1.
Next, there will be a gap in dates, with the next leg of confirmed dates arriving on Dec. 6 and 7 at FedEx Forum in Memphis. Then, on Dec. 10, Strings and the band will perform at BOK Center in Tulsa, only to follow up in the Lone Star State on Dec. 12 at Dickies Arena. The final pair of shows will happen at Austin, Texas’ Moody Center.
Before the summer tour begins, Strings will release his previously mentioned live debut, which he detailed via social media, sharing details on vinyl options. Billy Strings Live Vol. 1 will be offered in colorways such as Billy Strings Pre-Order Exclusive (red and black splatter), Independent Record Store Limited Edition (translucent blue) and Spotify Fans Limited Edition (translucent red).
Full details will soon be available for those interested in guessing what songs will be included on Billy Strings Live Vol. 1 . Tickets for Stings’ Fall 2024 tour will be available through general on-sale beginning Friday, June 14. A fan pre-sale is slated to commence the Wednesday prior, June 12. Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals: atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.
Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final. While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut. Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so. But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.
This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime. Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30). Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date. Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles: Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30. In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans: Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.
For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship. The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize. The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it. Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.
The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth. There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat. Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.
I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games. They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL. They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
- Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
- Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
