Boston's "North End" aka “Little Italy” is a pocket-sized Italian neighborhood teaming with history and charm. Among the narrow streets, hidden alleyways and park benches you will find The Paul Revere House, Copp’s Hill and The Old North Church. In the next step you are standing alongside Boston’s organized crime headquarters. Absorbing the history and folklore of the North End cannot be done properly without coupling it with the culinary lining of the neighborhood. As home to over eighty restaurants and countless wine shops, bakeries, and Italian salumerias (a.k.a Italian delis) it is safe to say you won’t leave hungry! Enough of that…let’s get to the good stuff. I am going to take you on a tour of the North End without all the formalities. (You must be seventeen years of age or have parental consent for this tour) That being said, who am I? …

Absolute BEST tour!!!! Food was delicious and plentiful and Anthony a total gem! He was as authentic as the amazing food spots we got to try. And gave us further recommendations for when we come back to the North End (if I ever eat again!). No Paul Revere's house stop - thank goodness - but plenty of genuine neighborhood history from someone who lived it. If you don't have a sense of humor, get offended easily, or just kinda suck, this is not the tour for you!!!! But damn we had a great afternoon and couldn't be more pleased that we found this tour! Thanks Anthony!

Anthony was a wonderful tour guide-and certainly one of a kind. The food was very good and his tales about the North End neighborhood were interesting and humorous. We went to places the average tourist would never visit on their own-and that's the best part of a food tour. We'd highly recommend Anthony and the Politically Incorrect Tour!

Photo of Mark T.

So, one of our stops was Polcari's Coffee. While we are outside, Anthony (our tour guide), knocks on the window and flips the bird to the man behind the counter. Said employee comes over, and turns around his open sign. On the rear is written: "Anthony, your tour guide, is not a nice person..." Don't take this literally, it is all in jest. I also heard two or three people from the street (or maybe the window) yell out "ANTHONY!" That is to say two things: 1. Be able to handle adult humor. If you're easily offended this tour is not for you. 2. Anthony is a true local with the connections to make the tour great. He personally grew up in the North End, and doesn't just know the business owners names, but their story as well. This also made the tour unique. What we heard was not from a book or a training guide, but from being born and raised in the area. Combine that with lack of political correctness, you will get the real stories of the history (including mob-related). In terms of food, we were able to try a wide variety of items from local spots you'd not otherwise visit. At least two were holes-in-the-wall so unassuming no tourist would enter unless a local (i.e. Anthony) told them. If you're expecting Cannolis, you need to look elsewhere! Too touristy. What you can expect is sfogliatelle! I don't want to spoil the tour by sharing all the stops, though I will say everything combined was a filling, but not excessive portion. Thus, all of these factors combined made for a fantastic tour! Wonderful food, generous portions, superb knowledge and storytelling, and great humor. While I am more-or-less local (I live one town south), I look forward to trying all of the places we visited on my own time and dime, and reporting on Yelp. I have already visited one, and that review is coming soon!

My nephew and I were looking for something to do while visiting Boston. Great afternoon touring the North End and enjoying delicious food. Anthony's approach to the tour was fun; the tour size allowed personal attention and conversations among the group. Great choice!

What a cool experience! It was set to start at 11 am sharp. And we were asked to meet outside in front of the North End branch of the Boston Public Library. There were 16 of us total, and I was the only one there by myself. No big deal, I'm used to it. 11 am, no tour guide. 11:05, no tour guide. By 11:10, we're starting to look at each other and wonder what was going on. So this one guy with the cute wife calls the number. He said he was coming. Around 11:15, Anthony shows up in a black tracksuit with a cigarette in one hand, cup of McDonald's coffee in the other. He reminded me of a mafia version of Rodney Dangerfield. Even had the slicked hair and it didn't move an inch the whole tour. Whatever he uses, I could use it. Anyway, we got a history of the neighborhood and how the value of the real estate has exploded over the last 2 or 3 decade. But it was also interesting to learn how the Italians have all but moved out of the neighborhood. And about the only businesses that can operate are restaurants because the rent has gone up so high and restaurants are about the only businesses that can make enough money to make up the difference. The local hardware store, drug store, they're gone and not coming back. Our first food stop was Galleria Umberto, a pizza joint. And it's funny, because I didn't know the places we were going, but this was a stop I was going to make regardless. So I'm glad I didn't go there ahead of time! They serve square Sicilian slices of cheese pizza, along with arancini and calzones. It's a pretty simple menu, which is fine. What they do, they do very well. We each got a slice, half a rice ball, and a bottle of water. The pizza was fine, not the best I've had, but I actually liked the rice ball more. I'm used to rice balls having too much filling and the outside coating getting soggy. This had just enough cheese and filling to balance out the rice and crispy coating. Excellent flavor and well made. From there, we stopped into a little general store for an Italian lemon slush, a nice palate cleanser. The store was pretty crazy with all kinds of coffee and tea and the back shelf in jars and then the employees weigh them on a little bronze scale that's probably 100 plus years old. They also have a lot of random kinds of candy and your usual preserved Italian favorites like olive oils, roasted peppers, artichokes, etc. From there, it was onto Monica's for one of the best Italian subs around. Before we entered the shop, Anthony talked about the details of the sub, how it was created, how to make it and how to not make it. Remember, thin cold cuts are key! The sandwich was remarkable. Three of our meats, including salami, mortadella, prosciutto, and capicola. Also provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and hot peppers. But there was also some fresh basil and aged balsamic vinegar to balance everything out. So the sandwich had heat, sweet, and salt. And the bread was quite unique. It reminded me a little of focaccia, I could taste the virgin olive oil. And it was very soft and squishy, sometimes I like a more crusty bread, but this was still really really good. After hearing a few mafia stories, we went to an actual sitdown eatery, called L'Osteria, for some cheese ravioli and a glass of wine. Well, we actually had to purchase the wine, unfortunately, and it was about $12 a glass. Then came what may have been the highlight. First, we walked down an alley, which I think is how every exciting Italian neighborhood story begins. We then walked down a flight of stairs past a pasta shop and into a little building, I believe called Bricco. They make prosciutto bread, which is one of my favorite things in the world. But for the first time I tried a pastry called Sfogliotellle, which is layer after layer of flaky pastry. Inside is some custard, and a little orange zest and cinnamon. Oh my goodness, move over cannoli! This was perfect, not too sweet, intense flavor, not creamy or heavy. Perfection! I'm resentful to my Italian father that it took this long for me to discover this deliciousness! Finally, it was a cafe across the street for a scoop of vanilla gelato topped with a shot of espresso. Not a coffee guy, but with the gelato, it was a great finish to the tour, which lasted till about 3 pm. Great time, it was a lot of fun.

This will truly be unlike any experience you have ever had. This honestly didnt feel like a tour, it felt like visiting a friend who took us around. My fiance and I dont think any 2 tours with Anthony is the same. It feels very on the fly. Anthony is an Italian in the sense of being very relaxed and enjoying good food. We had a blast and laughed so hard as evidenced in the photo. The food was so so good. Im still drooling over the sandwiches... Sidenote, if you can take the tour on any other day than a Sunday, might be a good idea. Some of Anthony's favorite places are closed that day.

This sandwich was so good!!

We were a tour of 4 with 2 food issues: red meats and milk/cheese. Anthony did great; we were all full at the end of the tour. We went to 8 places. Pizza. Italian corner store. Deli. Beautiful wine store. Mozzarella tasting at pasta shop. Restaurant for ravioli. Pastry shop. Gelato stop for affogato. Plus some local history sites. Anthony is a true character and his tours are a real adventure.

One of the best food tours I've been on, get the inside scoop from Flash aka Tony and dine the North End like you know what you're doing. Thanks Tony for a great walkabout and memorable day, we've been back to each spot a few times and writing this review from the line at The Daily Catch. Your tour rocks, only wish we could have met Mom! Cheers, Brian!

Fantastic! Loved the local color, rather than a cheesy memorization from what you might get at another North End food tour. "Politically incorrect" is less about politics, and more-so just saying it like it is. Be sure to keep up with Anthony to hear his personal commentary about what life was like growing up here before it was gentrified. He moves quick and isn't afraid of traffic!

boston historical tours

Booked this tour because it had 5 stars. So glad we did. Tony grew up in the area and was very knowledgeable about everything. He knows a lot of people even just walking up and down the street. You definitely get more bang for your buck then any other food tour I have been on. The tour went a little over 3.5 hrs which I think just depends on how people are in the group but we just kept getting fed! We were able to see a lot of places and because the tour went over a small area you could go back to some of the shops afterwards. I def suggest this tour for anyone visiting the area even the locals!!

6 ways to celebrate Pride in Boston this June

People march in the 2023 Pride parade in Boston. (Michael Dwyer/AP)

Editor's Note:  This is an excerpt from WBUR's Saturday morning newsletter, The Weekender. If you like what you read and want it in your inbox,  sign up here .

June is here, so get ready for rainbow flags and Pride month celebrations.

Massachusetts, the first state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage , has a rich history of LGBTQ+ Pride  — especially in Boston. And throughout the month, there will be all sorts of ways to celebrate, from dance parties and boozy brunches to concerts and historical tours.

While this certainly isn't an exhaustive list, here are a few Pride events to get you started.

Free Pride Flow/Strength Class

Sunday, June 2 — 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Down Under School of Yoga, 505 Tremont St., Boston

Down Under School of Yoga's South End studio will host a free class with Lyndsay Allyn Cox, a Boston- and New York-based fitness instructor. The third annual "PRIDE Movement Mashup" features both strength training and vinyasa. While the class is free, attendees are encouraged to make a donation to Boston Alliance of LGBTQ+ Youth , a youth-led organization committed to social justice and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. Don't forget to bring your yoga mat!

First Fridays: Bold with Boudoir

Friday, June 7 — 5:30 p.m.

Institute of Contemporary Art, 25 Harbor Shore Drive, Boston,

To kick off Pride month, the Institute of Contemporary Art will be hosting its longstanding First Fridays series with Boudoir — a queer underground dance club that centers around music and art. The event will feature numerous sets from local DJs and attendants will also have the chance to explore the galleries. (Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. ICA members get in free.)

Boston Pride for the People parade and festival

Saturday, June 8 — 11 a.m.

Copley Square, Boston

Colorful floats, heart-pumping music, entertainment. Having a parade is the proper launch to Pride month nationally — and Boston has its own too. This year, Boston Pride for the People, a community-run organization that aims to empower and honor the LGBTQ+ community, will host the parade for the second time, after reviving the hallmark event last year . The parade will start in Copley Square, move through the South End and conclude on Boston Common with a festival. There will also be a block party at the City Hall Plaza for those 21 and over.

Pride Trivia Brunch

Saturday, June 22 — 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Club Café, 209 Columbus Ave., Boston

Put the mimosa order in because MassOpera and Opera On Tap will host their first Pride Trivia Cabaret Brunch since 2019 at Club Café. The brunch will take place in the Moonshine room (it's giving classy early 1900s cabaret vibes). Apart from the trivia, the event will also feature performances from local musicians Abigail Whitney Smith, Donatella Fermata, Joshua Dixon Belt, Brittany Rolfs and Nicole Talbot.

Club Passim Performances

Saturday, June 22, 8 p.m.

Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge

If you're more of a night owl, Club Passim will host its inaugural Pride Month event with the Folk Collective. (Fun fact: Club Passim is the same venue that Joan Baez and Bob Dylan played in before their big debut.)

The event will host six queer and trans musicians, including WBUR's 2022 local Tiny Desk Contest favorite Lee Zangari . The performances will also be held in an in-the-round space for folks who prefer a more intimate vibe.

The Gibson House Museum

Throughout the month.

Gibson House Museum, 137 Beacon St., Boston

Boston has historically been a trailblazer in the LGBTQ+ movement, and some of that history is preserved through Charlie Hammond Gibson, Jr., a writer and preservationist. In his early 20s, Gibson was part of the "bohemian" subculture, a term used to reference queer communities in the 1800s. As the last person to reside on 137 Beacon St., Gibson's vision was to open his family's Back Bay mansion to become a community gathering space that commemorates LGBTQ+ history through his personal life and literary endeavors.

In honor of Gibson's upcoming 150th birthday, the Gibson House Museum will host a few special events for people who are interested in learning more about LGBTQ+ history in Boston. On June 4, the museum will host a talk that dives into works surrounding Boston's gay subculture in the late 19th century. Additionally, the museum will offer "Charlie Gibson's Queer Boston" tours from Thursday to Sunday throughout June.

Rock legends The Rolling Stones will perform the 100th concert in Gillette Stadium's history Thursday night during the band's tour across 16 North American venues.

The band's 2024 Hackney Diamonds tour, named after their latest studio album, will bring music icons Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood to Foxborough. Their tour will conclude in mid-July in Santa Clara, California.

The album was their first studio project since 2005.

It's a full circle performance for the Stones. The band played Gillette's first-ever concert on Sept. 5, 2002. Thursday is the fourth time the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will play in Foxborough.

The Rolling Stones will be joined at Gillette by one of music’s fastest-rising bands, The Red Clay Strays.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m., with parking lots scheduled to open at 3:30 p.m. and gates opening at 5:30 p.m.

Stadium officials encourage fans to allow themselves plenty of time when traveling near the stadium on event days.

The concert will coincide with weekday commuter traffic, so fans should plan accordingly. Traffic restrictions will be in place on local roads before and after the show.

Fans who use local roads will experience delays in arrival time due to road closures that are not captured by traffic and navigation apps.

Fans must use Interstate 95, Interstate 495 or Route 140 to access Route 1 and Gillette Stadium.

Bags larger than a small wristlet or handheld wallet will not be allowed inside Gillette Stadium, per the venue’s clear bag policy, which is in effect at all ticketed events.

The MBTA Commuter Rail and Keolis are providing round-trip, special event train service from Boston to the show and a limited number of $20 round-trip tickets exclusively via the mTicket app.

Tickets must be purchased prior to boarding the event train. All passengers, including children 11 and under, must have a ticket to board the train.

Very good app. Maps need improvement

Overall, I think this app is pretty well put together, and anyone visiting a National Park or NPS-maintained site should have this app downloaded. It is very nice that you can download individual parks for offline use. This is especially helpful for parks where there might not be cell service. However, there are a couple things that I would change about the app. First, there should be a way to link your park passes (daily entry, tours, A the B, etc.) to the app. That way you can have everything organized in one place. Second, the maps for individual parks, especially the larger ones, are way too cluttered. Using Yellowstone as an example, there are 515 unique markers on the Yellowstone map. Before it was shuttered, the old Yellowstone app had the PERFECT setup for the map. It would have large markers for the most used points of interest (Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Mammoth Hot Springs, etc.), while having smaller markers for less used points (trailheads, vault toilets, picnic areas, etc.) Then, when you zoomed out on the map, you would only see the large, important markers. As you zoomed in, the smaller, less used markers would appear. This helped tremendously by keeping the map from being too littered with markers and by making it easy to find the famous points of interest that most people will be looking for.

Useful app but info not available from other devices

The information on the NPS Park app is very helpful. It contains detailed information about the parks, history, access, parking, lodging, and other amenities. A few areas of improvement would be: 1. to be able to retrieve information saved on one device from another device For example, if you save all the parks that you have visited over the years onto one phone, you can’t retrieve it from a tablet or laptop. On top of which once you get a new phone there’s no way to transfer the information. You have to enter it all over again since there’s no way to retrieve that history. 2. The app has a lot of good information but is not the most intuitive to navigate. Frequently you are told where you can locate information, but there is no link provided to let you go to that page. 3. A note to the NPS developers. While there are buttons on each page that ask whether the page was helpful, there is no place to provide general feedback so that the end-user could provide suggestions.

Awesome start. Hoping for many more features.

Honestly this is one of my favorite apps. Even if I’m not traveling, I like to load the app and explore parks from afar. I love how much love and energy went into this app. It’s obvious that the content comes from people who love the parks as much as we do. Here’s what I’d love to see: Improve offline access: being able to save parks for offline use is awesome. However, the app spends a really long time trying to load when you don’t have internet access before finally giving an error message and then loading after a delay. I wish the app would start in offline mode (offline is default) and then access the internet once the app is loaded. Sort by ability or activity level: I wish I didn’t have to load every single item in a list to see if a trail or thing is ADA accessible. Maybe add an icon to the items on a list… or add a filter. Passport stamp locations: I love this feature. Can the items on this list be clickable? Take me to the entry for that visitors center, so I can find info on accessing it. More pictures: I’m disabled and physical access can be an issue. It’s so cool to be able to see places I’ll never be able to visit. Show me the super advanced hikes I’ll never get to. And show us more wildlife we might have trouble seeing on our visit! I’ve got a million suggestions but you all are busy people. Thanks for making a cool app. Looking forward to updates.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WJAR) — The Rolling Stones made history in Foxborough Thursday night as they performed the venue's 100th concert at the Gillette Stadium.

It's part of their Hackney Diamonds Tour.

The rock and roll hall of famers also performed the first concert in Gillette Stadium history on Sept. 2, 2002.

NBC 10 talked with fans who traveled from as far as Nova Scotia to see the band.

For many, it's not the first time they're seeing The Rolling Stones perform.

"This will be my seventh, I started back in my early 20's," said one fan from Massachusetts.

Many attending the concert with the thought of it potentially being The Stones last performance at Gillette Stadium.

"Everyone keeps saying, this is the last one, this is the last one, so, I had to come see them live," said a young fan who traveled to see the concert with his father.
