Great White Shark Tour – Cape Cod

Exploring Chatham’s Shark Alley

Join us for the trip of a lifetime!  Down Cape Charters is proud to offer exclusive shark viewing tours along the coast of Chatham, Monomoy Island and Nauset Beach.  Dubbed “Shark Alley”, this stretch of open Atlantic offers the rare opportunity to witness one of the most feared – and often maligned and misunderstood – predators on the planet.

Our naturalist guides cover basic white shark anatomy and physiology, state and federal conservation efforts and the subsequent rise in shark sightings over the past decade.  Passengers will observe the local seal colony population and learn about the fragile balance between seal conservation and public safety.

Whether you opt for a Private Charter or a scheduled Group Tour, our experienced captains and guides are pleased to welcome you aboard!  In coordination with a professional spotter pilot and plane, we’ll search Shark Alley for an encounter with the largest predatory fish in the sea!

Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity, Down Cape!

  • Shark Tours are offered from July to Columbus Day (early October).
  • Please refer to our online calendars for exact departure times and availability.
  • Reservations are subject to spotter plane availability so it’s important to book as far ahead as possible.  We will contact you directly in the event that a spotter plane cannot be secured for your desired date/time.
  • All shark tours include the services of a licensed captain, a naturalist guide, all required equipment and permits, and spotter plane services for 2 hrs.  Complimentary bottled water is also included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your cancellation policy?

For a full refund, a minimum of 7 days notice is required.

Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance – but more than 48 hrs before departure time – will be charged 50%.

No-shows and cancellations made 48 hrs or less before departure time will be charged full price.

What if there is bad weather?

Safety is ultimately our top priority.  We will not operate in hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, thick fog, high winds or thunder and lightning.  If severe weather cancels your reservation we will make every effort to reschedule for another day.  Otherwise, a full refund will be issued.

However, no guarantees can be made that every part of every day will be perfectly sunny.  So we will operate as usual in overcast conditions, light fog and in intermittent sprinkles.  Guests should dress appropriately for changeable weather and bring a positive attitude!

The final decision on weather related cancellations rests with the captain and reservations should be considered upheld unless we contact you directly.

How early should I show up for my reservation?

To leave enough time for our check-in procedure, we recommend your party arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time.  Leave yourself some margin for traffic or parking related delays, pre-departure bathroom stops, etc.

For Private Charters :

There will be no refunds or credits for customers arriving late.  Trips are scheduled multiple times per day and to ensure that all of our reservations are honored, your tour will still have to return at its regularly scheduled time.

For Group Charters:

Group tours will leave at the regularly scheduled departure time – no exceptions.  There will be no refunds or credits for customers arriving after the boat has departed.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A valid form of ID (only necessary for the person who has made the reservation).
  • If your tour/rental has not been prepaid, you will need to bring a form of payment.  We accept all major credit cards and/or cash.  Guests of the Wequassett Resort can also charge to their room account if they prefer.
  • An additional layer of clothing.  Even if its t-shirt weather in your driveway, always assume it will be cooler on the water.  For shorter tours, a sweatshirt or a light jacket is often enough.  For offshore trips, a water-resistant jacket plus a sweatshirt is ideal.  Temperatures can drop 20 degrees when heading offshore and clothing can quickly get wet if fog is present.
  • Please wear boat shoes, non-scuffing white-soled sneakers or relax and go barefoot.
  • Snacks/beverages.  Please see additional FAQ’s for restrictions.
  • Sunscreen (non-spray only).
  • Polarized sunglasses .  These will help you see through the glare on the water.

DO NOT BRING:

  • Spray sunscreen.
  • Marking shoes or sandals.
  • Hard alcohol.
  • Cigarettes/cigars/vapes (no smoking allowed).
  • Drugs of any kids.
  • Beer bottles or glass containers.  (Wine bottles are fine.  Beer in cans is also fine).
  • Anything that can easily blow away.
  • Dogs or other pets.
  • Large coolers.  Each of our vessels already has a large cooler onboard.  Feel free to bring a small cooler and small bags.
  • Large meals.  It just doesn’t work well on an open, moving boat.  Keep food/snacks simple!

May food and drinks be brought on board?

All of our trips include complimentary bottled water.  Additionally, customers are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages.

Please remember that you will be eating/drinking on a boat that is moving, open to the wind and may or may not have a table or cup holders (we operate several vessels and each is equipped differently).  Our advice is to KEEP IT SIMPLE and don’t bring anything that you aren’t prepared to eat in your lap.  Smaller snacks and finger foods are easiest and less likely to stain your clothing and our upholstery.

For adults over 21, reasonable amounts of beer and wine are also allowed.

RESTRICTIONS:

  • Leave the red wine at home.  On a moving boat it will stain clothing and upholstery.
  • No hard alcohol.
  • Please opt for cans and minimize glass containers in general.  Wine bottles are allowed but no beer bottles.  We will provide plastic cups if needed.

Any excessive use of alcohol will result in the immediate termination of the trip with no recourse.

What happens if my group size changes after booking?

For Private Charters:

The group size you specify at booking will slot you into a specific boat size.  As long as you stay within the specified range (1-6 passengers or 7-12 passengers), nothing more needs to be done.

If your group size grows into the next range of passengers, please contact us to see if a larger boat is available at your requested time.

If your group size shrinks into a smaller range of passengers, please contact us to see if a smaller boat is available at your requested time.

Please contact us directly to add/remove seats.  We have a limited amount of space on our group charters and each seat you initially reserve must be paid for unless you cancel ahead of time.  Cancellations/adjustments are subject to our cancellation policy (please see additional FAQ’s).

Do children and infants count towards passenger capacity?

Yes.  Each of our vessels is rated for a certain capacity by the United States Coast Guard and the USCG does not differentiate between children and adults.  A 14 person capacity means fourteen human beings, for example – regardless of age.

Will I get seasick?

The majority of our customers experience little to no symptoms of seasickness.  But whether it is your first charter or you are a seasoned pro, motion sickness is always possible on ocean-going trips.  Fortunately, there are ways to proactively avoid the most common symptoms (dizziness, nausea, vomiting).

Prepare for your charter by being well rested and well hydrated.  Avoid alcohol and large amounts of caffeine until after your trip (including the night before).  During your charter do not lay down, read or play on your phone.  Stay active, breathe deeply and watch the horizon.  Convince yourself you are not seasick – focusing or dwelling on your anxieties will only make you feel worse.

Those with a history of motion sickness might consider one of the over the counter remedies or doctor prescribed medications currently on the market.  Please consult with your physician for suggestions.

Are there any age restrictions or physical restrictions?

There are no age restrictions for our Shark Tours.  We have hosted newborns to octogenarians without issue.  However, given the nature of the ocean, not every day is appropriate for every group.  Please let us know (leave a comment at checkout) if your group includes young children so we can keep a close eye on the weather and adjust accordingly.

Those with mobility issues must be able to walk down the resort dock (which has ramps) and step up into the vessel.  Very rarely is this an issue, but it should be mentioned.  Our team will assist in any way they can to ensure those with mobility issues are comfortable.

Are pets allowed on your charters?

We do not allow dogs on any of our ocean going trips.

However, in certain circumstances, we may allow dogs on some of our motor boat tours.  See our Harbor & Seal Tour, Beachcomber Tour and Sunset Cruise items for more information.

Do you provide life jackets for children?

Yes, we have life jackets for all shapes and sizes (even infants).  While we recommend that everybody wear a life jacket on our boats, by law only those 12 and younger have to wear one at all times.  Your boat will have enough life jackets on board for everybody in your group.  Younger children are welcome to bring their own life jacket if they are more comfortable, provided it is Coast Guard approved (no arm floaties, please!).

How do you attract the sharks? Do we chum the waters?

In the interest of public safety, it is currently against the law in Massachusetts to actively chum the waters in hopes of attracting a great white shark to your boat.  Down Cape Charters uses a spotter plane to find sharks – we go to them instead of having them come to us!

Are sightings guaranteed?

The short answer is, “No”.  When working with wild animals in their natural environment, it is impossible to guarantee viewings.

We can guarantee that we will put each passenger into the best position possible to view sharks that day.  This means safe and reliable access to an area known for a high concentration of shark activity.  It also means monitoring the weather and wind conditions for appropriate visibility.  With the aid of a spotter plane, we are confident that your chances of spotting a shark with us on Cape Cod are as good as anywhere else in the world!

Do you offer cage diving?

No.  Down Cape Charters currently offers shark viewing trips where customers stay within the safe confines of the boat at all times.  This is a surface viewing trip using the aid of a spotter plane.

A shark swims near the surface of green water, streaks of light illuminate bits and pieces floating around the shark.

Want to see great white sharks? Consider Cape Cod.

As Cape Cod’s shark population reaches a record high, these often misunderstood visitors have become an unlikely source of local pride—and ecotourism.

We haven’t even set foot off the dock before our spotter sees a white shark. “Eleven o’clock, two boat lengths,” says Paul Garganigo, one of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s (AWSC) private charter captains.

The shark emerges from the shallows like a mirage. We track three more nine- to 12-foot great whites—including the hilariously named Major Bro Dude—during our three-hour AWSC tour around Cape Cod, Massachusetts . Each flash of dorsal fin and white underbelly elicits a thrill.

As the only known white shark aggregation site in the North Atlantic and one of the world’s densest seasonal concentrations of adult white sharks, the waters surrounding Cape Cod have become a hot spot for these apex predators from May to October. As Cape Cod’s shark population reaches a record high , the toothy visitors have become an unlikely source of pride—and ecotourism. Chatham, a coastal town 30 nautical miles from where the filming of 1975’s Jaws sparked a very different kind of shark fever , now sees white sharks as a new normal. It helps that most locals know that the risk of a shark attack is low. The last incident around Cape Cod was in 2018 (the first one in over 80 years).

“To be honest, I was a little nervous at first,” says Gary Thulander, managing director of Chatham Bars Inn and president of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce. “I run a hotel, and all of a sudden people are talking about white sharks. I’m like, God, is that going to affect us? But it’s the opposite. There’s more interest than ever.”

Here’s how travelers can come face to face with these often misunderstood fish.

Boats along twisting waters ways by the coast.

A conservation success story

More than a dozen operators—including Blue Water Entertainment , Outermost Harbor Marine , and AWSC, a nonprofit that supports white shark research and conservation—bring hundreds of curious tourists, fin fanatics, and even the occasional bachelorette party out to Shark Alley. That’s the nickname for a stretch of ocean along Cape Cod’s Nauset Beach, Chatham, and Monomoy Island, where boat passengers often glimpse the enigmatic animal.

According to Kristen Smith, AWSC community engagement manager, COVID-19 marked a surge in boat tours. “We did 12 weeks straight of educational programming on Facebook when the world shut down, and our social following doubled,” she says. Smith says it’s not unusual for charter guests to look out for sharks they’ve seen on National Geographic’s SharkFest or Discovery Channel’s Shark Week . Salty, a photogenic 12-foot male, is a crowd favorite. Most requests are in vain; the great whites—named by the research team and donors—are constantly on the move.

(Learn why great whites are still a mystery to us.)

While Cape Cod’s great white tourism industry seemingly boomed overnight, bringing back the sharks themselves was a longer process. Greg Skomal, a senior scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries , says he didn’t encounter a great white near Cape Cod until 2004. According to Skomal, the sea creatures moved elsewhere for fatty prey once commercial fishers wiped out the region’s gray seal population in the early 1960s. After the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 made it safe for the seals to return, conservationists were able to establish stable pupping colonies on the Cape by the early 1990s.

“We believe that the appearance of white sharks over the last 15 to 20 years is in direct response to the number of seals along the shoreline,” says Skomal. “It amounts to a new restaurant—or maybe a favorite restaurant reopening.”

Simultaneously, the Atlantic white shark population—from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada —is exhibiting healthy growth thanks to years of protection. The U.S. government designated them as a prohibited species in 1997, and Massachusetts followed suit in 2005. According to one recent study , about 800 white sharks visited the waters surrounding Cape Cod from 2015 to 2018. In comparison, a similar white shark estimate for California’s central coast is 300 .

Seals sit on beach.

A new kind of white shark tourism

Unlike in other white shark aggregation sites around the world, such as in South Africa and South Australia , cage diving with great whites in Massachusetts is illegal. Charters are also prohibited from intentionally baiting or dumping chum for white sharks within state waters. Instead, operators take a hands-off approach, using the Cape’s pale sandy bottom to view the dark contrast of the shark from the surface.

( Dive through French Polynesia’s shark alley .)

Jaime David, a communications consultant from Maplewood, New Jersey, who has chartered a private tour with AWSC for the past two years, says she favors this natural method.

“On television or in the movies, white sharks are always shown in hunting mode,” she says. “It was incredible to see this huge predator just doing his thing, being—for lack of a better word—boring.”

Due to demand and cost, AWSC has recently added more tour options, including group expeditions with the   Whale and Dolphin Conservation group and the popular Shark Receiver Tour in collaboration with Chatham Bars Inn . During the one-hour cruise through Chatham Harbor, guests help their AWSC naturalist guide check a receiver buoy for recent white shark detections while also searching for seals and other wildlife.

A shark swims in shallow waters as seals stay close to shore.

“It’s very common for tour groups to claim to be doing some kind of science, but it’s rare to have them working hand-in-hand with reputable scientists who are actively publishing their work,” says Nick Whitney, senior scientist for the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium .

( Here’s what kids can learn from sharks .)

In addition, AWSC private white shark charters allow guests to check shark tags with a hydrophone, shoot video with an underwater GoPro, and record observations for the research team. They also report shark sightings to the Sharktivity App , which works to raise public awareness of white sharks and keep beaches safer.

Whether they take to the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, or Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds,  The Inn at Yarmouth Port  guests enjoy learning about Cape Cod’s sea life. And the habitats of seals and sharks are becoming increasingly popular.

Looking for new ways to learn more about these amazing creatures? These options receive rave reviews from our guests.

If simply seeking a glimpse of a cute (also HUGE) friendly seal, head to the  Chatham Fish Pier  before noon. See the opportunistic seals trying to catch leftovers as our fishermen unload their catch.

Be sure to stop in at the  Chatham Pier Fish Market  to grab what’s thought to be one of the best lobster rolls on Cape Cod!

Or drop in on a beach yoga class at sunrise (daily at 7:30 am beginning in June) with  Chatham Lighthouse Beach Yoga . The seals watch and seemingly participate from the Chatham sand bars.

Other options include  Monomoy Island Excursions Seal Tours  and  Seal Watch Tours .

Shark Watch

Great White Shark Watch

Every year we learn more about the elusive shark population who visit the cool waters off Cape Cod. Visitors eager to interact with them are treated to wonderfully responsible shark ecotourism options throughout the Cape.

Start with the  Shark Museum  (in Chatham and Provincetown) hosted by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, to learn more about their research into the local shark population.

Then head to the waters with a responsible Cape Cod shark tour operator, who will stay far enough offshore that you will witness the shark’s natural behavior.  White Shark Tours of Cape Cod  or  Monomoy Sport Fishing  are popular options.

Hop aboard the Bar Tender , the Inn’s custom designed, 18-person capacity beach launch and watch our native harbor seals bask in the surf. Monomoy is home to growing populations of gray and harbor seals that use the land and water as a refuge. Catch seals playing in the surf, sunning themselves, feeding their pups, or even giving birth before returning to the water to feed on fish, crustaceans, and shellfish.

Fishing The Cape

Cape Cod is a region known for its excellent fishing! And its fishing grounds are located just a short boat ride away from the inn. The Star Struck , an 34-foot Regulator will get you out to the best fishing spots quickly. Whether it’s light tackle, targeting Striped Bass, Bluefish, and Black Sea Bass, or a full day offshore in search of Bluefin Tuna and Sharks, the inn has state of the art gear and knowledgeable captains to put you on the fish. Should you reel in a “keeper” the inn can prepare it for dinner.

Whale Watching on The Shooting Star

chatham bars inn shark tour

Whale watching off Chatham is an experience of a lifetime. But forgo the crowded cruise ships and take an intimate trip, up close and personal with giant Humpback, Minke, and Fin whales. The inn’s 38-foot Shelter Island Runabout,  Shooting Star (a vessel designed by singer/songwriter Billy Joel) is also available for private charters to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands.

Cape Cod National Seashore Tour

Departing from the pier every 30 minutes, the  Bar Tender , is a locally crafted beach launch and provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the outer beach, a section of Cape Cod National Seashore, one of the most beautiful barrier beaches in the world. This pristine beach, only accessible by boat, is not to be missed.

Sailing on Stars & Stripes

chatham bars inn shark tour

Sailing is another favorite pastime on Cape waters. Sail aboard  Stars & Stripes , the inn’s beautiful, French built, Latitude Tandorne sloop. Enjoy a quiet sail around the harbor. See the seals, Chatham Light, and the ever-changing shoreline. Feeling adventurous? Ask the captain to take the helm or learn how to hoist up the sails.

Saltwater Fly-Fishing Schools

Chatham Bars Inn is now an official Orvis Endorsed Lodge and will partner with Orvis to host the only Orvis Saltwater Fly-Fishing Schools in Massachusetts. Open to guests of the Inn and to the public, Chatham Bars Inn will offer one-day schools ($279) and two-day schools ($489) on select dates from May through October.

Hit the Beach

chatham bars inn shark tour

The inn’s award-winning children’s programs  make each child’s visit to Chatham Bars Inn unforgettable. Offered through Labor Day with morning and evening sessions, every activity is hands-on, innovative, and educational, with an emphasis on local fun. Tennis Anyone?

The inn’s har-tru tennis courts feature state-of-the-art composition that combines the play and feel of classic clay with the convenience of a hard surface. Private clinics and lessons are available through our on-site tennis professionals.

Golf Game On

Have some fun in the sun with friends and get a bit of exercise on the golf course! Chatham Bars Inn is located near many of the best 18-hole courses in the area. Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
