Visiting Nashville

Nashville is the country music capital of the world, but there is more than country music that gave this bustling city its Music City moniker. Nashville is a worldwide music hub for rock, pop, bluegrass, jazz, classical, blues, soul music, and contemporary Christian music. Music artists like Kid Rock, Bon Jovi, the Blackeyed Peas, and Michael Buble have written and recorded their music here. Visitors can experience this rich history with stops at the Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the new National Museum of African American Music.

Nashville is sizzling with a well-earned reputation for amazing food! We're famous for some of the best barbecue on earth, buttery biscuits, and our world-famous Nashville Hot Chicken. In addition to these classic Nashville tastes, the world's hottest chefs are now in Nashville, serving up fresh interpretations to thrill and amaze!

This link will show you where it is in relation to the Farmers Market. From there walk through the parking garage of the 909 Flats between 9th Ave N and Rosa L Parks, cross Rosa L Parks and then you arrive at the Farmers Market!

The hosts of award-winning restaurants in Germantown are unlike any other in Nashvile.

Germantown Nashville

One of the more popular neighbourhoods is the rapidly changing East Nashville, home to many creative spaces, from art galleries and welcoming restaurants offering many places to eat and drink.

In fact, the dining scene here is anything but generic. It carries a combination of artisanal food with Spanish, Portuguese, and French influences as well as solid craft cocktails.

For a variety of other kinds, head on over to The Gulch. Here, you can find the best food from local Tennessee tonkatsu, a variety of seafood selections, and for the hungry meat fans, mouth-watering ribs and homegrown steaks are plentiful here.

The commercial strip of 12 South , just a few miles from Downtown, is a popular tourist and college area that pushes your taste buds out of your comfort zone, but in a good way. It is a mile of opportunities and choices that makes it a coveted food destination for sure. Middle-eastern food, vegetarian options, dumplings, pizza slices, and beer deals don this area – all within walkable distance from each other.

15 Best Nashville Tours

While country music may immediately come to mind when you think of Nashville, this popular city offers plenty more in the way of activities and entertainment, from breweries to nightlife to outstanding cuisine. By picking the right tour, you'll be able to experience whatever side of the Music City you'd like to see. U.S. News identified 15 of the best Nashville tours using traveler opinion and expert input. No matter which one you pick, you're in for a great time.

Editor's Pick: Old Town Trolley Tours – Nashville Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour

Price: Adults from $63; kids from $25 Duration: 1.75 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Kellie Walton , a Tennessee-based travel, food and beverage writer, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Old Town Trolley Tours – Nashville Hop-on Hop-off Trolley Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

Nashville’s allure spreads far beyond the honky-tonks lining Broadway – there’s a world-class food scene, influential history in the Civil Rights and suffrage movements, and even a full-size replica of the Parthenon originally in Athens, Greece. Old Town Trolley Tours’ Hop-on Hop-off option moves visitors through each of these highlights and more, including retail districts Capitol View, the Gulch and Marathon Village, and attractions like the Ryman Auditorium , Country Music Hall of Fame and the Frist Art Museum . In total, it makes 13 stops. Riders are free to disembark and rejoin at any stop to explore the destinations by foot, with trolleys arriving around every half hour.

Throughout the tour, learn behind-the-scenes facts and personal anecdotes from a live local tour guide, such as their favorite dish to order at nearby restaurants, and where famous songs were recorded. The majority of Old Town Trolley Tours drivers moonlight as musicians, and come with insider knowledge of popular venues and recording studios around town. The comfortable trolleys are operational in any weather, with open-air windows that can be sealed quickly with a plastic covering in the event of rain.

Why we love it:

  • Marathon Village, accessible via stop one, houses many Nashville retail options, including a Jack Daniel’s retail store, an amplifier showroom and Antique Archaeology, a store made famous by the reality television show “American Pickers.”
  • Many highly recommended restaurants are within walking distance from several trolley stops. Turn up the heat at Hattie B’s Hot Chicken at stops three and nine, or dine inside an old train station at Stationairy or The Finch at stop six.
  • For those visiting Nashville by car, stops one (Marathon Motor Works), 12 (Nashville Farmers' Market) and 13 (Capitol View) have free street parking within walking distance of trolley stops.

5 Tennessee Whiskey Destinations for Distillery Tours and Tastings

With a legacy as old as its neighbor Kentucky, the Volunteer State has heritage distilleries and exciting upstarts to please any palate.

Jon Gugala is a freelance writer based in Nashville, Tenn. His personality-driven stories have appeared in GQ, Men's Health, Outside Magazine, and elsewhere. He remains convinced that hot chicken is, to quote a late chef, an "initiation ritual for Yankees."

Nashville Barrel Company

In a nondescript commercial building a few miles from the honky tonks of Lower Broadway, Whiskey House - Nashville hides in plain sight. Through a cluttered antechamber, more than 5,500 bottles line its walls, which founder John G. Brittle, Jr., 60, claims is the largest collection of open whiskies in the U.S., and maybe the world. In grass-stained jeans and a dirty black T-shirt (he spent the morning gardening), Brittle explains that expressions are organized by origins: Kentucky and Tennessee have adjoining rooms; Indiana, home to the mass-distiller MGP Ingredients, occupies a hallway. The Chapel, complete with upholstered pews and surrounded by distilling relics, hosts industry nights and trustee meetings. And then there’s the Vault, where only the rarest whiskies are displayed: the Pappys, Wellers, the Michters. “‘The whiskey experience of a lifetime,’” he says, brandishing an engraved snifter with the motto. “People want an experience, and we’ve created one.”

Established in 2019 as a 501(c)(3) and in its current location for the past three years, WHN has harnessed America’s infatuation with its native spirit into a philanthropic tour de force. Through auctioned rare whiskey tastings, it has raised more than $1 million in the last two years for charity partners with missions ranging from the hyper-local to national in scope. “You can go to a bar and drink good whiskey,” Brittle says. “[At WHN,] you’re drinking extraordinarily rare stuff that you can’t get at a bar.”

The growth of Brittle’s nonprofit mirrors that of the Tennessee spirits industry in general: sudden and with a surprising passion. Like its neighbor Kentucky, the Volunteer State has a distilling legacy measured in centuries. But unlike its sister, Tennessee adopted prohibition early, in 1910, a full decade before the 18th amendment. And unlike Kentucky’s exceptions, the ban was a blanket on the industry. Following the country-wide repeal, it reluctantly resumed, but at a glacial pace: Jack Daniel’s restarted production in 1938, five years following the repeal of the 18th amendment, while George Dickel, the state’s other large-scale heritage producer, fired up its stills in 1964. It took special legislation in 2009 to finally usher in craft distilling, and even today, 14 of the 95 counties remain dry.

“I call it the hundred-year hangover,” says Seth Weinberg, a WHN trustee, liquor consultant, and founder of the soon-to-open Vintage Whiskey Vault in Nashville. “Tennessee still has a lot of room to grow.”

The classic Tennessee spirit will always be its namesake Tennessee whiskey . According to Weinberg, however, the definition — and the taste — is not always distinct. According to the internationally binding NAFTA , Tennessee whiskey is straight bourbon whiskey made within the state. But state code further restricts it, requiring filtration through maple charcoal before aging in a step called the Lincoln County Process with rare exception. Some say this results in a sweeter, less biting product. But some Kentucky bourbons voluntarily charcoal-filter, and the same limestone shelf that purifies Tennessee springs also runs under parts of Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois, blurring terroir distinctions. Even experienced aficionados can struggle to identify the state of origin of higher-proof expressions in a blind taste. “I don’t necessarily differentiate Tennessee whiskey from bourbon whiskey or American whiskey in general, because there are so many different styles,” he admits.

Tennessee’s distilleries are legion and the whiskey is broadly distributed around the state. From Old Dominick in Memphis and Chattanooga Whiskey to Ole Smokey in Gatlinburg and Corsair in Nashville, options abound. Traditionalists will find their favorites, but the next great expression may be aging in a dusty barrel waiting for the right time to be tapped.

“There are distilleries out there with these young people who trained in the industry under the bigs. Now they’re out there on their own,” Brittle says. “That’s the future of great whiskey, and we’re looking for the next great stuff.”

Nearest Green Distillery

courtesy of Uncle Nearest Distillery

The Uncle Nearest origin story has been confirmed by historians and experts: The enslaved Nearest Green teaching a young Jack Daniel the art of distillation or perfecting the charcoal-filtering Lincoln County Process, which in part distinguishes Tennessee whiskies from other bourbons. Once a free man, Green became the first master distiller for Jack Daniel's Distillery. Now Fawn and Keith Weaver pay homage with this spirits brand, which has grown into the most successful Black-owned liquor company in the world. Visitors to its Shelbyville, Tennessee, home can sip cocktails at its Guinness-recognized bar (518 feet!) and pick up one of its distillery-exclusive expressions, including an uncut, unfiltered rye.

Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery

Kelli Dirks Photo

Nelson’s may tout a 150-year history in the state and a claim for the oldest recipe still in use for its Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey, but its modern roots begin with two brothers reconnecting with their family’s storied past. Andy and Charlie Nelson discovered their great-great-great grandfather’s legacy and began selling their own blend, the now-famous Belle Meade Bourbon, from their garage in East Nashville in 2009. Today, at a former auto factory near downtown Nashville, their stills again run, continuing the family tradition. Guided tours, exclusive expressions, whiskey flights, and a hot-weather favorite “cold fashioned” — a slushy take on the classic cocktail — are must-tries in the Music City.

Jack Daniels

Jack Daniel's Properties, Inc.

From Sinatra and the Stones to Slash and Springsteen, the most famous Tennessee whiskey brand in the world needs no introduction. Jack Daniel’s home of Lynchburg, Tennessee, (population: 6,000) is a soft start to the distillery experience, with small-town Southern hospitality and the company’s family-style Miss Mary Bobo's Restaurant off the square. Tours of the property itself, which dates back to 1875, allow for sipping and gawking at a century and a half of memorabilia. Surrounding Moore County may be dry, but Daniel’s has a special dispensation to sell from its White Rabbit Bottle Shop.

Three friends with a passion — and a palate — for whiskey began buying single barrels in 2018. Today, every upstart comes up with its own blend, but Nashville Barrel Company was ahead of the curve, and its small-run selections distinguish it from others. From its downtown Nashville tasting room and nearby distillery, it extends this tradition to visitors, who can sample individual barrels and walk out with a bottle of their favorite. Special drops, including a honey barrel-finished straight bourbon and single barrel straight rye, often dribble out from NBC's private stash, making every visit a chance to hit the lottery. After all, they've earned Double Gold Awards from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for four years.

George Dickel Distillery

courtesy of Cascade Hollow Distilling

Tucked back in the Cascade Hollow of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Dickel has crafted its distinct sour mash Tennessee whisky (note the spelling) for almost 150 years. Following post-prohibition rebirth in 1964, it rebuilt its distillery into a robust summertime must-see. The Front Porch Friday series, which runs from May to October, features signature cocktails and Nashville songwriters in a pastoral setting far from the bustle of Lower Broadway. A bonus for pilgrims: Its visitor center is one of the few places in the world where all four Bottled in Bond series liquors are readily available.

Lainey Wilson showcases evolved country-rock flair at Nashville's Ascend Amphitheater

T he reins of country music's mainstream industry have been placed in Lainey Wilson's hands. Friday night's Ascend Amphitheater kickoff to two nights at the venue proved that if she's willing to take them, an entire genre and culture is willing to be led to unprecedented commercial growth.

In 2023, the small-town Northern Louisiana native proved that her heart running "on dreams and gasoline" could make her a Grammy-winning, Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. In 2024, being a wildflower rocking and rolling astride country music — a metaphorical wild, unbroken horse of an industry — is the most crucial story worth watching.

For Wilson, taking greater control of these reins will involve the help of, at the core, women. That's not unprecedented. But given that four out of five times in recent years, men have topped country's radio charts, it's a marked redevelopment.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Five decades of country's female icons show up for Wilson

Country Music Hall of Famer Wynonna Judd and Grand Ole Opry member Terri Clark showed up in the flesh to open the most critical 10-day run ever of her 13 years based in Music City.

In the next 10 days, she'll open her Lower Broadway bar Bell Bottoms Up , play another night at  Ascend Amphitheater , be inducted into the  Grand Ole Opry  cast and appear onstage at Nissan Stadium during the third evening of CMA Fest 2024.

In the past five years, both Clark and Judd have grown from posters on Wilson's wall to now being friends cutting cover records with her. Judd joined for an incendiary take on Tom Petty and The Heartbreaker's "Refugee" from a forthcoming compilation, "Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration Of Tom Petty." Clark appeared to duet on her 1996 classic "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" from the Western Canada native's career retrospective duets album.

Before departing the stage, Judd addressed about the power of the moment:

"Get used to it, Nashville. Lainey, I'll open for you anytime."

However, country's iconic women showed up in other noteworthy ways throughout the two-hour set.

An orange pickup truck is the central onstage character in Wilson's 2024 live performances. It is set before a green screen reflecting stereotypical 1970s-era Western imagery. Thus, when the "Country's Cool Again" performer emerges to open the show by singing her latest single, "Hang Tight Honey," after the strains of Barbara Mandrell's "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" are played, it feels like the opening scene of a loose and free, outlaw, teenage road dramedy from 50 years ago.

Moreover, Wilson's "Good Horses" was written by Luke Dick and Miranda Lambert. Note that later in the show, alongside playing snippets of songs by Loretta Lynn and Reba McEntire, she also sang Lambert's "Kerosene."

Couple that with the stellar performance of Sav Madigan — her latest band member, a Nashville-based female multi-instrumentalist and multiple-time award-winning singer-songwriter and recording studio owner. Madigan serves in the same role for Wilson that Sydni Perry currently serves for Carrie Underwood.

In all aspects and facets of where Wilson has arrived in her career, it will be with the championing of five decades of iconic women, in varying levels of direct and indirect influence, that she sustains and evolves her success.

The growing power of her catalog of songs

A growing rumble says that Wilson must jump to scale the death-defying heights at which the country music industry has placed her work.

She's taking the leap.

Roughly 18 months ago, Wilson opened for Jon Pardi at Ascend Amphitheater. She had only one No. 1 single and her sound was still driven by not wholly owning her Cajun-meets-Western Credence Clearwater Revival-style swamp-rock sound.

The crowd realized she was important, but not quite yet a star.

Eighteen months later, she's won seemingly every country music award available, opened a Lower Broadway honky-tonk, appeared in multiple documentaries and potentially on national broadcast television in front of every American citizen at least once in 2024 by the end of February.

From silently mouthing the words to album cuts like "Smells Like Smoke" to belting the soaring bars of the final chorus of "Heart Like A Truck," country music's fans, old and new, are slowly growing in affinity for Wilson's body of work. Note how dialed in the band already sounds on the material for her forthcoming "Whirlwind" album, be it the recently-released rocker "Hang Tight Honey" or love ballad "4 x 4 x You."

The 18-month jump from one hit to potentially eight hits fills half a 90-minute live concert set with original music. Couple that with the recent hits reflecting much more of who Wilson, the countrified rocker, is as a human being-as-well-branded sound and style.

She's scratching the surface and tattooing a flesh wound on her future potential.

Self-affirmed girl power

More important than any other note from Wilson's concert is that legions of children and teenage girls nationwide will attend these concerts and note one self-evident truth.

Women can be superstars, proudly supported by strong, traditional country music-embodying men.

Wilson's openers Ian Munsick (of "Long Live Cowgirls" and "White Buffalo" fame) and Zach Top are unabashedly embodying and evolving the legacies of '80s and '90s country favorites Garth Brooks and Chris LeDoux, plus Alan Jackson and Keith Whitley, respectively.

And they're opening for Lainey Wilson and singing her praises.

Before offering that "country music fans respect their neighbors and land more than what they have in their pocket," Munsick offered that Wilson had become more "humble and talented" than she was eight years ago when Wyoming native Munsick met the Baskin, Louisiana-born star.

Wilson is still amazed by the thousands of young women in the crowd who appreciate her work.

Step back from that and note the lessons her songs teach them at such a young age.

Tough empathy underpins her duet on Jelly Roll's "Save Me" and her pairing with HARDY for "Wait in the Truck."

She performed both as solo acoustic songs while sitting in the sunflower-adorned cargo bed of her onstage pickup truck.

Having a safe yet spectacular time while kicking back a few adult beverages underpins her reciting a long-winded, ribald toast before having the crowd engage in a "holler and a swaller" and singing songs like 2021's "Straight Up Sideways" or her new bar's ode, "Bell Bottoms Up."

But more than any song she sang during the evening, an affirmation she's been saying to herself for the past year, which she shares with the crowd, resonates loudest.

In the context of an evolved stage show at the height of her impact and influence over country music and popular culture, it creates an intangible soul connection that steadies her on the shoulders of giants as she scales the heights her career is reaching.

"Get up every single day with the sun, look at yourself in the mirror and say I am beautiful, I am smart, I am talented, I am godly, I am fearless and I can do anything I can set my mind to."
