Coldplay Pledges to Lower Carbon Emissions on 2022 Tour
On Thursday (Oct. 14), Coldplay announced the dates for its 2022 global tour in support of the upcoming album 'Music of the Spheres.'

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.
Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. There will also be free drinking water and efforts made to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue; click here to see the full list of sustainability goals.
In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together. At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Coldplay Travel to Space and Redeem Humanity (Again) on ‘Music of the Spheres’
By Jon Dolan
“You’ve got a higher power,” Chris Martin tells a brand new flame — and, by extension, each and every citizen of Earth — on Coldplay ‘s ninth album, adding, “I’m so happy I’m alive.” He may be literally the only person who feels that way in 2021, and that, of course, is part of the Coldplay magic, such as it is. Once again, they’ve set up shop at the 50-yard line of pop-rock possibility, and in their eternally expansive vision, reimagined the middle of the road as a land of hope and dreams. Musically and lyrically, the band has rarely sounded so ecstatic. “We’re only human, capable of kindness, so they call us humankind,” Martin sings on “Humankind” over a radiant haymaker of aspirant guitar churn, blindingly bright Eighties synth stabs, and upwardly mobile drum swirls — a sound so uplifting it makes or Bono or Bruce Springsteen at their most heroic sound like junior-high goths who just got their screen time taken away.
Obviously, big gulps of redemption are what we’ve come to expect from Martin. In some ways, Music of the Spheres picks up where the band’s last album, 2019’s Everyday Life , left off. That LP attempted to add realist specifics and global sonics to their vaguely defined universal humanism, setting politically-tinged lyrics to music that filtered in West African pop and reggae elements. This time out they’ve gone even further, reaching for a humanism so universal it’s literally intergalactic. As its title suggests, Music of the Spheres is a concept album about outer space, specifically a distant solar system called the Spheres; it’s an almost unnervingly well-timed idea, arriving right on top of a new Dune movie and just a couple days after our Twitter feeds were all gummed up with whoa, dude images of William Shatner gazing out at our sad, salty world through the window of Jeff Bezos’ space penis.
Coldplay have gone so far as to map out their fictional solar system with made-up planets like Kubic, Calypso, and Coloratura, and they’ve even schematized the record so each song corresponds to one of their make-believe worlds. T he shyly blissed-out “Biutyful,” for instance, is the sonic embodiment of the eighth planet, Floris. Musically, the vibe of this celestial realm is represented by the lush, spacious ambient textures of “Alien Choir” and the equally wonder-drunk “Infinity Sign,” with its pastel disco bounce, New Age keyboards, and distant sample of a chanting crowd that sounds like a Close Encounters visitation over a sold-out soccer stadium.
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
That unique level of thematic specificity notwithstanding, the record itself doesn’t get weighed down by any sort of Rush-size storyline, nor is there some pain-in-the-ass heavy-handed sci-fi message to deal with (beyond the predictably intimated vibes of harmony, wonder, etc.). Martin’s deep space is mainly personal and romantic; his HAL 9000 is a heart emoji. “You are my universe/I just want to put you first,” he sings on the rapturous “My Universe,” a sleek, sunny, disco-spritzed highlight featuring BTS.
Top 40 sage Max Martin is on board in the role of Mr. Spock, helping remind Coldplay why they’ve lived long and prospered in the first place — that is, by strategizing an album that’s about as strenuously pleasant as anything in their canon. “Human Heart” is a winningly pie-eyed experiment in a cappella vocoder soul; “Let Somebody Go,” featuring a lovely duet vocal from Selena Gomez, is a soft-focus study in post-breakup solemnity that’s got more warmth and grace than most artists’ crushed-out valentines.
The album isn’t all soothing Yoda metaphysics. On “People of the Pride,” the music jarringly swerves into a nu-metal storm-trooper stomp as Martin sings about an insane, murderous dictator, a “crook” who “swears he’s god.” How this fits into the space concept thing isn’t super-clear (the song lines up with planet Ultra, which must be a real hellhole). In actuality, it’s the one moment on Music of the Spheres that feels like it’s being beamed in from our own dystopic existence — a reality in which, just to take one example purely at random, a billionaire can shoot himself into space while his workers back down here live like serfs. Yet fear not, patient listener: By the second verse of the song, the masses have bound together, turned their rags into flags (literally, that’s the metaphor), overthrown their oppressor and stepped proudly into the baptismal fount of love and freedom. “Say yeah! ,” Martin implores us. Yeah, indeed, Captain Chris. In the Coldplay cosmology, all the salvation you can possibly stand is just a yeah away.

Reduce our consumption, recycle extensively and cut our CO2 emissions by 50%.
Support new green technologies and develop new sustainable, super-low carbon touring methods.
Make the tour as environmentally beneficial as possible by funding a portfolio of nature- and technology-based projects and by drawing down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces.
Initiatives
Co2 emissions.
We have pledged to cut the tour’s direct emissions by more than 50% compared to our previous tour (2016-17), and work with our partners and suppliers to reduce their impacts and emissions as much as possible.
We’ve teamed up with DHL as the tour’s Official Logistics Partner in order to minimise emissions from freight and transportation. As leaders in the field of sustainable transport and logistics, DHL support the tour by offering solutions to minimise logistics-related emissions and other environmental impacts, from advanced biofuels in the air to electric vehicles on land.
Where we cannot reduce, we will be drawing down any unavoidable emissions following the guidance within the Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned carbon offsetting.
We continue to capture climate impact data and calculate our environmental footprint aligning to emissions reporting standards and appropriate conversion factors.
We have adapted all tour operations to minimise emissions, in line with the best science and practices: from set build to travel to freight to power.
We avoid fossil fuels, use clean energy and use reusable and sustainable biomaterials wherever possible.
CO2 drawdown
Despite our best efforts, the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint. We pledge to drawdown more CO2 than the tour produces supporting projects based on reforestation, rewilding, conservation, soil regeneration, carbon capture & storage and renewable energy.
As part of this pledge, the tour is funding the planting – and lifelong protection of – millions of new trees including one tree for every ticket sold .
Our stage production is now powered almost entirely with renewable, super-low emission energy. We avoid fossil fuels wherever possible.
SUSTAINABLE BIOFUELS
Battery system, kinetic energy, grid renewables.
Although the tour has been carefully routed and pre-planned to minimise air travel, some flying is unavoidable. The band does mostly fly on commercial flights, but there are inevitably occasions when charter flights are required for band, crew and equipment.
For all flights, commercial and charter, we pay a surcharge to use or supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), either for our own use or for others’. We source Sustainable Aviation Fuel produced 100% from waste and residues, such as used cooking oil from restaurants. When used unblended with fossil jet fuel, SAF helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions of air travel by up to 80% over the entire life cycle compared to the conventional fossil jet fuel that it replaces.
Wherever possible, we use electric vehicles or biofuel for ground freight and transportation.
We send a sustainability rider to all venues and stadiums in advance to request best environmental practices.
In various locations, in order to minimise freight emissions, we adapt the show so we can utilise local equipment, materials and resources.
We select building materials and show effects based on their environmental credentials:
Stages are built from a combination of lightweight, low-carbon and re-usable materials including recycled steel, that can be appropriately reused or recycled at the end of the tour.
LED WRISTBANDS
The reusable LED wristbands worn by the audience as part of the show are made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials.
We have reduced wristband production by 80% through collecting, sterilising and recharging them after every show.
Our wristband return rate averaged 86% during the first year of the tour.
LIGHTING & AUDIO
The show has upgraded to ultra-efficient equipment such as a low-energy LED screens laser and lighting systems and a PA system with up to 50% less power consumption compared to the previous tour, which also dramatically reduces environmental noise outside the venues.
Special effects
Confetti used during the show is 100% biodegradable and requires considerably less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours.
We are using a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals. All tubing and holders are either biodegradable or recyclable.
Audience travel makes up a major part of any tour’s carbon emissions.
We have partnered with SAP on the development of a free tour app that encourages fans to use low carbon transport to and from shows. Download the free app here!
Fans who commit to low-carbon travel will be given a discount code.
CO2 DRAWDOWNS
Based on fans’ use of the app , we have and will continue to calculate the total carbon footprint of travel to and from shows. By supporting climate initiatives we will drawdown all of these emissions via nature-based solutions like rewilding and conservation, and we pledge to continue doing so. As part of this, we plant at least one new tree per ticket sold, sustained for its lifetime.
ACTIVATIONS
The tour includes onsite activations like our energy zone, powered by solar and kinetic energy. These activations feature interactive and educational experiences highlighting innovations in clean technology and the natural world.
We maximise our water efficiency where possible.
Our sustainability rider asks venues to introduce aerated taps, low flushing toilets and reducing water pressure to alleviate water wastage.
Water refill stations for the fans are provided wherever possible.
Fans are encourage to bring a refillable water bottle to the venue, wherever possible.
We minimise waste and promote recycling at our shows.
Working with venues, we strive to eliminate the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. They will be replaced with reusable and recyclable alternatives.
We work with each venue to help and encourage them to establish recycling programs within the stadium where not already in place.
The tour also helps to clean up waste beyond the concerts themselves by sponsoring the two-tiered work of The Ocean Cleanup:
River Interceptors remove thousands of tonnes of garbage from some of the most polluting rivers around the world, intercepting waste before it reaches the ocean.
Ocean Cleanup units are working in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to clear 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.
The carbon emissions of food can account for up to 20% of a person’s carbon footprint. Food production, transportation and waste is a massive contributor to climate change and we address this within our crew catering operation.
PLANT-BASED
All our crew catering menus have plant-based and meat-free options as standard.
LOCALLY SOURCED
Organic produce is sourced from local suppliers or farms that practice regenerative agriculture techniques.
We are supporting the development of synthetic, lab-grown cultured foods.
We partner with local food banks to donate any surplus food where possible.
Organic waste, such as vegetable peelings and scraps, is composted wherever possible.
MERCHANDISE
All merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. Where possible, all plastics and polyesters will be replaced with natural alternatives like organic cotton.
Wherever possible, all merchandise is made of natural fibres and recycled / recyclable elements.
Partners and vendors are carefully selected to provide high quality & sustainable merchandise.
All products are sourced with vendors who prove ethical work practices including fair wages and good working conditions.
Wherever possible, all merchandise is packaged in recycled paper, card or compostable bags.
We also encourage venues to mirror these standards in their food concessions.
GOOD CAUSES
As we have always done, we will put 10% of everything we earn (touring, records, publishing etc) into a good causes fund. These funds will be split between environmental and socially-conscious projects and charities including ClientEarth, The Ocean Cleanup and One Tree Planted. We are working in partnership with EarthPercent as a founding donor.
We are not responsible for the content of external websites
We acknowledge that, despite our best efforts, the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint. We pledge to drawdown significantly more emissions than the tour produces by supporting various nature projects around the world, focusing on reforestation, rewilding, conservation and soil regeneration.
REFORESTATION
Working with One Tree Planted, we have supported 21 planting projects across 17 countries from ecosystem regeneration in the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil to revegetating Marna Banggara in Australia. Planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested has helped the environment by accelerating and assuring the re-establishment of healthy forests. One Tree Planted Examples of projects below:
North America
California - Mendocino and Sonoma Counties Restoration
Central America
Haiti - USAID Reforestation Project Priority Micro-watersheds
South America
Andes - High Andes Polylepis Forest
Brazil - Raízes do Mogi Guaçu
Romania - Reviving the Carpathians
Soil health is critical to a healthy planet and we are supporting positive soil restoration projects that regenerate the land, promote biodiversity and sequester millions of tonnes of CO2.
Biodiverse landscapes (such as ancient woodland) sequester up to 80% more CO2 because of the complex soil structure. For this reason, we are avoiding mono-culture plantations.
Food Forest Project The Sustainable Food Trust
In addition to Ocean Cleanup’s work, we are supporting ocean conservation and the protection of marine species, seagrass meadow restoration and management of seaweed blooms.
The Ocean Cleanup Sea Shepherd Project Seagrass Seafields
We are investing in projects that restore degraded and marginal land to its natural uncultivated state, thereby promoting biodiversity, capturing CO2 emissions and providing support for ecosystems such as natural flood defenses.
Project Quercus Farm Under the Radar
CONSERVATION
We’re proud to support MyTrees Trust / Miti Yangu in Zimbabwe. This community-led project will protect a vast new area of wilderness, support the regeneration of forest and provide a habitat for critically-threatened wildlife.
My Trees Trust / Miti Yangu
CONSERVATION AT SEA
We are supporting the efforts of Captain Paul Watson Foundation to stop the damaging effects of overfishing and threats to marine wildlife, particularly whales and dolphins.
Captain Paul Watson Foundation
TRANSPARENCY
We’re committed to the ongoing measurement of our environmental impacts – both positive and negative – so that we can make further improvements as we go along.
We are working with Green Nation , Live Nation’s sustainability platform, as a special artist advisor. This will ensure sustainable practices developed on this tour are shared, adopted and scaled throughout the rest of the industry.

Recent tour reviews
I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.
The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.
Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."
Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"
Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.
The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.
And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.
Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!
A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Coldplay suspends tour over singer Chris Martin's 'serious lung infection'
Coldplay has announced it is postponing several Brazil shows in its “Music of the Spheres” world tour due to “a serious lung infection” that singer Chris Martin has contracted.
In a statement posted on Twitter , Instagram and its website , the band expressed “deep regret” and said the shows should be rescheduled for early 2023.
The statement reads in part, “Due to a serious lung infection, Chris has been put under strict doctor’s orders to rest for the next three weeks.
“We’re working as fast as possible to lock in the new dates and will follow up with more information in the next few days.”
After apologizing for any “disappointment and inconvenience,” the statement continued that the group needs to prioritize Chris’ health.
A rep told The Hollywood Reporter that there was no additional information available at this time about Martin’s illness.
Ticketholders should hold on to their tickets, the band’s statement added, as they would still be valid for the new dates, though all refunds will be honored.
“We’re optimistic that Chris will return to good health after the prescribed medical break and look forward to resuming the tour as soon as possible,” the statement concluded. “To everyone affected, please accept our sincere apologies, and thank you as always for your love and support.”
The shows would have taken place on select dates between Oct. 11-22. A 10-show appearance in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is still set to happen starting Oct. 25.
In September, Coldplay announced it would bring “ Music of the Spheres “ to feature film screens via a global broadcast of one of the Buenos Aires concerts on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 .
