Rented and rv for the Atlanta nascar race. Thanks to the lovely Covid-19 the race was cancelled just after we got our rv. We kept it for one night as we were to tired to drive back home. Returned the rv the next morning. Upon arrival they informed us we would get a full refund for the time not used. The rv was clean and easy to use. Pick up and drop off was quick and smooth. The parking lot is small so parking was snug but we managed. We will use them again.

Duluth sees huge potential in cruise ships after record-setting Great Lakes season

The Viking Octantis moves under the Aerial Lift Bridge

It was pitch black when the 665-foot long Viking Octantis slipped quietly Monday morning under the Aerial Lift Bridge into the Duluth-Superior harbor, and still only about 7:30 a.m. when passengers began to step ashore behind the city’s convention center on the waterfront.

"I've been in Minnesota before, but not this far north. So it's very exciting,” said Grace Mendez from Escondido, California.

“This trip is a ‘bucket list’ adventure for me,” added Ann Ivey of Little Rock, Arkansas. This was her first time in Minnesota, she said, leaving only two states to go before she’s visited all fifty.

Ellen Roy and Jim Roy are helped by Hermantown resident Dave Flemming

Mendez and Ivey were two of nearly 400 guests aboard the Octantis, an “expedition” ship that Viking launched on the Great Lakes this year. Their 8-day voyage began in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and also includes stops in the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin, and Mackinac Island in Michigan, before ending in Milwaukee.

This was the ship’s seventh, and final, stop in Duluth for the season. Another ship, from American Queen Voyages, traveled to Duluth twice in June.

It marks the first time Duluth has played host to cruise ships in a decade, and follows a two-year hiatus across all the Great Lakes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nine ships sailed the Lakes this year from four different companies, including Viking, which entered the Lakes for the first time this year. Nearly 20,000 passengers are expected to travel on the Lakes by the end of the year. That's up more than 25 percent from 2019.

"It has been a record breaking year," said Dave Lorenz, travel director for the state of Michigan. and chair of Cruise the Great Lakes, a consortium of states and provinces that promotes the cruise industry.

“And we can see that cruising is officially now back in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.”

The Viking Octantis in the Duluth Superior Harbor early in the morning

Local impact

Duluth rolled out the welcome mat for cruise ship visitors this year. When passengers came ashore Monday morning, volunteers were there to greet them, answer questions and hand out stickers and maps of the city waterfront.

"If you're a traveler at all, which my husband and I are, you love feeling like you belong here. That's part of why we're volunteering," explained Denise Sushoreba, who is herself a veteran of several Viking cruises.

Passengers then boarded buses to take day trips to the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, the Glensheen Mansion, and the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

Passengers from the Viking Octantis arrive

Railroad general manager Ken Buehler said the cruise ship stops have had a big impact on the organization’s bottom line.

"On a Monday, we know that we have one full train already sold out in the morning, and we know we have one full train in the afternoon that's already sold out, and that money is on the books. That gives a lot of assurance.”

A recent University of Minnesota Duluth analysis estimated the Viking ship's seven visits this year could generate more than $600,000 in economic impact for the city.

That study projected an expanded cruise industry, with more ships and with trips that begin or end in Duluth, could generate several times that amount.

Even more importantly, the city hopes for return visitors, said Duluth senior economic developer Tricia Hobbs.

"And so the thing we know about Duluth is when people come to Duluth, they have a really strong connection and affinity, because they love their time here. And we feel very confident that we're going to see that with folks coming in."

A tender filled with passengers from the Viking Octantis

The cruise industry’s growth in the Great Lakes has been made possible by a new network of four U.S. customs clearance facilities across the Lakes, including one at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, or DECC.

This spring the city of Duluth partnered with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and the DECC to set up a Customs and Border Patrol Facility to screen cruise passengers.

"This is a big deal,” said Cruise the Great Lakes’ Lorenz,. “And it actually helps to draw ships to Duluth,” he explained, because even though Duluth is an attractive destination, ship companies may have avoided making the long trip to the western end of Lake Superior “without the fact that now they can go through processing there."

Smaller ships, new experience

In addition to the upgrades to the border screening process, experts say there are additional factors driving the surge in interest in Great Lakes cruising.

Many passengers prefer the more intimate cruises offered by Great Lakes ships, which carry a few hundred passengers, rather than the several thousand guests that ocean ships can accommodate.

“I've been on larger cruise ships. It's just too big,” said Grace Mendez. On smaller ships she feels “like a person to the crew, you don't feel like just one of a crowd."

The Great Lakes also offer a different kind of experience. The Viking cruise is billed as an "expedition." Guests can learn about the science of the lakes, help collect weather data, even take a ride in an on-board submarine in the depths of Lake Superior.

"It's gigantic. It's huge. It is like an ocean,” said Mike Tedor of Calabash, North Carolina.

The Viking Octantis in the Duluth Superior Harbor early in the morning

That vastness can be awe-inspiring, said Steven Burnett, who directs the Canada-based Great Lakes Cruise Association.

Burnett has worked for years to attract more cruise ship companies to the Great Lakes. Viking’s entry into the Lakes this year was a turning point, he said.

“A firm with that stature … not only do they generate their own business, but they also generate an interest in the worldwide cruise industry. And where Viking goes, many other cruise organizations also go," Burnett said.

This summer Burnett said he took executives from five cruise companies on a scouting trip on Lake Superior, who are all looking at creating new itineraries in the Great Lakes.

Burnett believes the number of cruise ships on the Great Lakes will double in the next decade.

In Duluth, Tricia Hobbs said the city prefers to keep ship visits somewhere between 10 and 20 a year.

Next year, Viking is adding a second ship, and new itineraries, including a 15-day trip that begins in Toronto and ends in Duluth, and a 71-day, $50,000 cruise that departs from Duluth, traverses the Great Lakes, sails down the Atlantic coast, through the Panama Canal and eventually to Antarctica.

“So there'll be more time on the front end and back end of those trips to be able to experience [Duluth] ... really allowing that wonderful lift and enhancement to what we have going on in the tourist season,” said Hobbs.

A C25 RV was an excellent choice for our USA roadtrip

We booked our RV through Camper Days in the UK  From first contacting them they were very helpful even when I had to change the pick up date. All the communications were very clear and making the payment via a bank transfer was straightforward. Cruise America contacted us prior to the pick up date with useful information and videos to watch. We arrived at the Los Angeles branch a hour early due to haviing to check out of our hotel, but the staff were very accomodating and we didn’t have to wait for long. The pick up process was very straightforward. We'd ordered the kitchen, bedding and towels packages there were some items missing but we were told to buy them and keep the receipts and we'd be refunded at the end of the trip. We had a couple of issues with the van, the glass in the passenger wing mirror was rattling and we didn't have the correct sewer fittings for the RV sites we were staying at. I contacted the assistance line and they said to buy what we needed and we would be refunded. The RV itself was clean and very comfortable for the two of us. Everything worked as expected and we made use of the generator, heating and air con. In total we travelled just over 1500 miles in it. The returns process was very straightforward I gave them a list of what we'd purchased along with the receipts and the total was added to our refund. We thoroughly enjoyed using the C25 RV for our USA roadtrip.

Great Service at Cruise America Mesa, Arizona

Cruise America Mesa, Arizona, is a delight to visit because of David S. in reservations and Karin R. at the rental desk. I can't say enough about these two people. I've rented from C.A. probably three dozen times now, and they are so friendly and go above and beyond every time. Karin makes sure everything is perfect with our RVs. She tries to accommodate every request and does so with genuine kindness. David is so prompt when returning calls, answers every question, and is so pleasant to talk with. Other employees are okay too, but not like David and Karin. I think those two really lead by example and lift the whole company up with their efforts.

Staff is pleasant and polite

Reservations were easy, helps to know what you want in first place. I did my homework.

I had to delay

I had to delay, then cancel my reservations. Customer Service was amazing. I canceled on the 4th & received my refund on the 6th. Thank you for making it so easy & I will definitely rebook in the future!!!

No help at all.

We needed to cancel our reservation on June 3rd to June 11th, due to having issues with the sale of our home. I called to ask if we could reschedule in September, but you had no reservations for us. Colin had stated that you had no reservations from August 24th till the end of the year. I can't believe you had nothing for us one way. My opinion is you just didn't want to deal with us. I've see your advertising and your are blowing smoke up every ones, you know what. I wouldn't recommend your company to anyone to rent an rv. Thank you for nothing.

Rude and curt agent…

The agent Derek Whitley was curt and rude. He was not helpful at all. He should signs of exasperation every time I asked a question. I even heard him, over the phone, saying in a hushed tone, “Oh my God!” As though he was fed of my queries. He should be taken off the phone and given more training. I have always gone with cruise America for many years but I am having serious thoughts of cancelling and going with Candream due to Derek and who knows more rude agents when I call in next.

4th booking and great customer service

We just booked our 4th rental and I received a discount code after the fact via email. I called and spoke with Robert Sinteral who immediately gave us the discount, emailed us the updated booking receipt while we were on the phone and answered my questions with professionalism. Robert is a great asset to your company and deserves praise! Thanks Robert!

My experience was AMAZING!

My experience was AMAZING! Robby was in incredible. I needed to find an RV to watch the eclipse and all the RVs had been sold out for 10 months. I called at exactly the right time when there had been a cancellation and Robby got right on it to grab it for me as well as give me a wonderful discount! He said as so helpful and friendly. I am so so grateful that my family vacation will be even better now!

This review is based solely on reservations

This review is based solely on reservations, the delivery and experience of the camper has yet to occur: Kiki was a pleasure to deal with, responded clearly, promptly to my queries and changed the city of pickup (had originally reserved pickup from another state/city) without any issues. A+

Excellence Reservation Experience Helped by Robbie Sinteral

I am a BC, Canada resident holding passports from other countries, and I want to reserve an RV in Calgary, AB, Canada. My parents, who also hold non-Canada passports, will come to visit me in BC and go to Calgary to rent an RV for a trip. Since my dad holds a non-Canada driver's license and is of non-Canadian nationality, all the documents required to rent an RV in Canada are very ambiguous. I have called the Cruise Canada reservation centre many times and even called the Vancouver BC office and Calgary AB office to ask about my dad's driver's license question, whether he needs to bring a translation document of his driver's license, and does he is the only person can pay this rent as my dad is the only driver to this RV. I got various conflicting answers after I called reservation specialists and branches, which stressed me as it was my first time renting an RV. I struggled and suffered for 4 days by contacting them and seeking solutions. Robbie Sinteral, one of the reservation specialists in Cruise America/Canada, is the first person and only person so far to write down all of my questions and concerns and take the initiative to help me double-check with his colleagues and get back to me. After only waiting 1 hour, he gets back to me by email with detailed explanations to answer all of my questions. All the information has been confirmed, and all the problems have been solved! He is a very efficient, confident and competent worker with sufficient experience and problem-solving skills. If I need to reserve an RV in the future, I will directly contact Robbie Sinteral (his ext. 7456) as he is a reliable reservation specialist and always provides accurate answers that I can trust. Through this platform, I would like to reiterate my appreciation to Robbie Sinteral; thank you so much! It's my first experience in reserving an RV; I may also share future experiences and thoughts after using the RV after my trip.

The adventure trailer promotion code on…

The adventure trailer promotion code on the website does not work, I had to call the agent to make the reservation. They also could not fix the problem and just gave me the same percent off but if I need to make changes etc it’s still very inconvenient.

1 star is way too much

1 star is way too much. They rip you off at check-out. I wouldn't recommend Cruse America to any Family/Friend. Thieves, I did a scratch on the side, I stopped by 2 RV repair shops to ask for an opinion and a tentative repair price.. it went between 350 to 500 USD. When I checked out at CA, they deducted the full amount of 2500USD... I couldn't believe it, there was nothing I could do.. they said it would cost over that... of course, they have deals with repair shops and will tell me that it costed the amount they want it to be... if they repair it at all.

Hi Daniel, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We appreciate your input and are grateful for the opportunity to address your concerns. It appears that you haven't contacted our Customer Relations team regarding this issue. Rest assured, one of our agents will reach out to you promptly to discuss this matter further. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and are committed to resolving this issue to your satisfaction.

Heath was great

Heath was great! He was responsive, gave expert help and options to make sure we got the RV and package that best fit our needs. I previously reserved a RV online and now wish I would have gone through Heath. It's rare to prefer a phone reservation over the convenience of online, but the experience was that good. Also, sending contact information and stating that we can reach out with any questions or help, awesome customer service.

Holland America Introduces ‘Dutch Day’ Culinary Experiences on Every Cruise

  • April 28, 2024

Rotterdam departing Rotterdam

Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” culinary experience celebrating the cruise line’s history on every sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, according to a press release.

The focal point of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many dishes also available in the Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line’s Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.

“Holland America Line remains deeply connected to our roots in the Netherlands, and Dutch Day is the perfect way to honor our history through experiences that celebrate the culinary culture of the country,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our guests appreciate special touches like Daelmans Stroopwafel for turn down or a dish in the dining room that is distinctly Dutch, and we’re excited to expand the cultural experience for an entire day to showcase more of our heritage.”

The special Dutch Dinner features both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course options include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, options include a Bosche Bol, Tompouce or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels, Dutch Day will also feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Additionally, instead of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.

Viking cruises to sail from duluth to antarctica and south america in 2023.

Cruise passengers boarding the Viking Polaris in Duluth in the autumn of 2023 will embark on an epic 71-day, eight-country, three-continent voyage that includes stops in Canada, New York City and Mexico, a transit of the Panama Canal and a week in Antarctica, before disembarking in Argentina.

Viking Cruises' expedition ship Octantis has already begun plying the Great Lakes this spring, with Duluth as one port of call . Its new sister ship Polaris will sail from Duluth to Toronto and back on Great Lakes grand tours next summer.

But now the Swiss-based cruise line has quietly started selling tickets for a blockbuster new itinerary that starts in Duluth on Sept. 12, 2023. The "Longitudinal World Cruise II" will explore the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, the U.S. East Coast and the Caribbean, Chilean fjords and glaciers and parts of Antarctica before terminating on Nov. 21 in Ushuaia, Argentina, some 7,000 miles south of Duluth.

That makes it a roughly north-south voyage between the world's farthest-inland seaport (Duluth) and the southernmost city in the world (Ushuaia).

Pricing for this novel itinerary starts at an equally eye-opening $49,995. A current promotion on Viking's website offers unspecified savings and free international airfare through June 30..

"Viking's world cruise from Minnesota is totally unprecedented," said Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of Cruise Critic, a TripAdvisor website. "It's an incredible itinerary that no other cruise line offers. The price is perfectly in line with other ships of similar nature — and the fare includes a ton, too, which helps deliver even greater value to travelers."

The "Longitudinal" journey is what's known as a repositioning cruise, in which a cruise ship transitions between regions — such as moving from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — at the beginning or end of a season. In this case, the Viking Polaris will be concluding its Great Lakes season and repositioning to the Antarctic region for the Southern Hemisphere summer.

The Duluth-to-Ushuaia cruise will be Viking's second "Longitudinal" voyage of 2023. For the first one, the Octantis will reposition from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Milwaukee from March 2 to May 5, excluding Duluth. That 65-day voyage starts at $44,995.

The midsize, 378-capacity Octantis and Polaris are themselves unprecedented in Great Lakes cruising. The Polar Class 6 luxury expedition vessels feature an in-ship marina called the Hangar, which can launch expeditions on special boats, kayaks and even six-passenger submarines.

"We're seeing an enormous interest in these types of world cruises," said McDaniel. "They're an exciting vacation option for those who are eager to see the world, and do so in a comfortable and convenient way."

Here is a partial list of stops on the Longitudinal World Cruise II.

New ‘Dutch Day’ on Every Cruise Celebrates Holland America Line’s Heritage with Themed Culinary Experiences

Daelmans Stroopwafel partnership offers a variety of sweet treats, while new special menus and the Orange Party highlight Holland America Line’s rich Dutch history

Seattle, Wash., April 26, 2024 — Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” experience that celebrates the cruise line’s more than 150-year-history that began in the Netherlands. Whether sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, many Dutch culinary favorites will be featured on board for the special day.

The centerpiece of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many of the dishes also offered in the casual Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line's popular Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.  A new partnership with Daelmans Stroopwafel includes delectable desserts featuring the Dutch staple and a Daelmans Stroopwafel turn-down pillow treat in every stateroom.

Culinary traditions run deep in the Netherlands, and the special themed Dutch Dinner in the Dining Room features an extensive menu that includes both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course selections include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, a Bosche Bol (large, chocolate covered cream puff), Tompouce (Dutch mille-feuille pastry) or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie provide the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels — a family-owned bakery founded in the Netherlands in 1904, renowned for its authentic recipe —Dutch Day will feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Select bars will serve a Stroopwafel Liqueur with hints of cinnamon and caramel only on ships in Europe. Additionally, in place of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.

New in Crow’s Nest Café on all ships, fresh-made poffertjes — a traditional Dutch treat resembling small, fluffy pancakes — will be available daily (not just on Dutch Day) for a nominal charge.

Popular Orange Party Held on Dutch Day

Once per cruise, Holland America Line holds the Orange Party with live music, cocktails and treats, and now it will be held on Dutch Day. The Orange Party pays homage to the company’s Dutch heritage (orange is the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which hails from the House of Orange), and guests are invited to wear orange attire and accessories. During the after-dinner festivities, special orange-themed cocktails are available while servers pass around finger-foods and sweets.

Dutch Day is part of Holland America Line’s programming that offers authentic experiences to immerse guests in the culture, history and traditions of the places visited on each cruise.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Moscow Boat Tour

  • Page active

Image

Description

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
