Frequently asked questions

From Brisbane, cruise ships sail along the gorgeous Queensland coast stopping at mainland ports like Townsville, Cairns, Port Douglas and Cooktown. You can also visit islands like K’Gari Fraser Island and Moreton Island, or ports in the Whitsundays like Hamilton Island, Dunk Island and Great Keppel Island. Itineraries sail all around Australia from here, calling at Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and more.

Brisbane is the closest major cruise port to the South Pacific, so there are regular departures to this tropical destination and less days at sea on the way. These cruises visit New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and beyond. It’s also close to Papua New Guinea, one of the world’s newest cruise destinations that should be on your bucket list. New Zealand is another popular cruise destination, with ships regularly sailing to Auckland, Wellington, Fiordland and Christchurch. If you’re looking for something further afield, try a cruise to Asia, Hawaii or a Transpacific voyage across to the mainland US.

Get ready for some serious family fun on a cruise from Brisbane. Many of the ships sailing from here are the most kid-friendly in the business, with features like waterslides, waterparks, sports courts, adventure activities and arcade games. Quantum of the Seas regularly sails from Brisbane and is packed with awesome features like a surf simulator, indoor skydiving tunnel, bumper cars, a roller skating rink and a circus school complete with trapeze lessons. Enjoy mini golf and dive in movies (shown above the pool) on Carnival Luminosa or challenge your friends on the twin racer waterslides on P&O Cruises Pacific Encounter. Most of the ships sailing from Brisbane will also have dedicated kids’ clubs with separate rooms and activities for different ages.

Yes, a handful of luxury cruise ships sail from Brisbane. These ships tend to be smaller in size, offering a more boutique experience with personalised service from the crew. Enjoy spacious suits, exceptional food, free-flowing wines and indulgent spas. Luxury lines to look for include Silversea, Ponant, Seabourn and Crystal Cruises.

Check in times for your cruise will be staggered to cut down on wait times for passengers. The process varies across different cruise lines, but you will be allocated a check in time based on your cabin or given the option to choose a check in slot when you book or through the lines’ app. At a minimum you will need to be at the cruise terminal at least one hour before the ship is scheduled to depart – remember, they won’t wait for you!

There is only one cruise port in Brisbane, so if you are sailing on a round trip cruise then you will return to the same port. If you’re on a one-way cruise, you will depart from Brisbane International Cruise Terminal and then disembark in another city.

If you’re short on time, you can hop on a two- or three-day cruise from Brisbane to get a taste of life onboard. These short cruises may visit one port or just spend time at sea for you to enjoy everything on the ship. Longer cruises of seven- to 10-days will travel along the east coast of Australia or into the islands of the South Pacific, visiting multiple ports with a few sea days thrown in. Longer cruises can last from two weeks up to a month and will take you to New Zealand, Asia or on a Transpacific adventure.

If you dream it, you can find it on a cruise ship sailing from Brisbane. Most cruise ships will offer things like swimming pools, waterslides and waterparks, sports courts, games rooms and spas, but some of the ships based here take it to the next level. Enjoy surf simulators, indoor skydiving tunnels, 100m-high observation pods, bumper cars, video game arcades and world-class entertainment featuring virtual reality. There will also be multiple places to dine, ranging from casual cafes and buffets to chic fine dining, as well as buzzy bars and nightclubs.

Yeehah! You could meet a ship full of new boot scooting buddies on a country music themed cruise from Brisbane. Other themed cruises cover Australian music, comedy, eras like the 80s and 90s, or sporting events. These cruises tend to be short, just a few days at most, and feature lots of themed activities and entertainment on board. Longer cruises can be focused on food and wine, wildlife or cultural encounters.

Yes, there are 900 parking spots available inside the grounds of the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal. These are all paid parking spots managed by Wilson Parking and you must book online before you travel.

Cruise ships depart from the Port of Brisbane all year round and, thanks to that sunny Queensland climate, you’ll almost always be sailing out in good weather. The busiest period is between November and April, when around a dozen cruise ships will regularly be departing from the city.

Royal Caribbean to Deploy Two Ships in Australia in 2025-26

  • June 28, 2024

Quantum in Brisbane

Two Royal Caribbean International ships are set to spend the 2025-26 winter season in Australia and the South Pacific.

Sailing in the region for the first time, the Anthem of the Seas is set to offer various itineraries from Sydney.

The Quantum-class ship will be joined by the Voyager of the Seas, which returns to Australia after a hiatus for cruises departing from Brisbane.

Together, the vessels will offer a total of 44 cruises in the region, including two- to 18-night itineraries to the South Pacific, New Zealand, and Australia, sailing between November 2025 and April 2026.

Following a repositioning cruise from Hawaii, the Anthem of the Seas will offer 24 departures from Sydney.

The program of the 4,100-guest ship features short coastal cruises, in addition to five-night cruises to Tasmania and nine- to 18-night itineraries to the South Pacific islands and New Zealand.

Ports of call being visited include Noumea, Dunedin, Bay of Islands, Port Vila, Mystery Island, Airlie Beach and Hobart.

Debuting in Brisbane, the Voyager of the Seas offers a total of 20 cruises to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific.

Itineraries include seven- to nine-night cruises to Noumea, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu, as well as four, six, and seven-night cruises to Airlie Beach and Cairns on Australia’s Queensland coast.

The Voyager’s program is highlighted by the introduction of a new destination to Royal Caribbean’s lineup in the region: Luganville in Vanuatu.

Before starting its 2025-26 season in Australia, the 1999-built ship also offers a repositioning cruise from Singapore.

The 12-night cruise sails to Brisbane and features visits to destinations in Indonesia and Australia such as Bali, Darwin and Yorkeys Knob.

For the 2024-25 season, Royal Caribbean International is also deploying two ships in Australia, including the Quantum of the Seas sailing from Brisbane and the Ovation of the Seas sailing from Sydney.

Qantas flight forced to make emergency landing due to brake failure.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Qantas flight was forced to make an emergency landing after it lost the use of its brakes.

QF1908 from Canberra to Brisbane was due to depart at 5:25 pm but it was delayed.

Shortly after taking off, a warning light came on indicating there was a brake issue with the aircraft, The Courier Mail reports.

People getting off plane

The pilot told passengers there was a technical issue and the aircraft would have to land earlier than usual.

The aircraft landed on the longest runway at Brisbane Airport at 8:02 pm with no issues.

Multiple emergency vehicles were on standby at the airport, following the aircraft into the airport.

A passenger said the pilot handled the situation “extremely well” and you wouldn’t have known the brakes had failed as it was a smooth landing.

In addition to 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 35 countries, the global voyage will feature exclusive events, dozens of S.A.L.T. culinary experiences,20 destinations that are new to a Silversea World Cruise, various seasonal enrichments, and much more. (MIAMI – June 27, 2024) Silversea, the leading ultra-luxury and expedition cruise travel brand, has opened general sales on its World Cruise 2027, The Three Oceans. Set to call in 80 destinations – more destinations than any voyage in the company’s history – the 149-day sailing will connect 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 35 countries. Additional opportunities to meaningfully connect with the local culture will abound, with exclusive events crafted by Silversea’s destination experts, dozens of S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) culinary experiences, various seasonal enrichments, and much more. Silver Dawn , one of the most intimate world-cruising ships, will depart Los Angeles on January 8 and arrive in Copenhagen on June 7, 2027, unlocking the unique cultures, histories, and ideas of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans for guests. Responding to strong demand for all-new destinations among Silversea’s guests, the itinerary incorporates 20 new calls for a Silversea World Cruise – many of which are accessible only to small ships, such as Langebaan, South Africa; Hambantota, Sri Lanka; and San Sebastian, Spain. “With our World Cruises and industry-leading range of extended voyages, we sail to the most captivating and enriching destinations at the optimal times of the year, creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences through our unique destination expertise,” said Bert Hernandez, president, Silversea. “In 2027, guests can explore 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, exclusive World Cruise events, and destination-enhancing culinary experiences through our S.A.L.T. program – all while traveling in Silversea’s trademark comfort. There is simply no better way to experience such a diverse array of iconic experiences in 2027 than by joining us on The Three Oceans World Cruise.” ICONIC EXPERIENCES: 50 UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES Among the voyage’s many highlights, 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites will connect Silversea’s guests with the most iconic landmarks, cultures, and environments across five continents. Standout experiences will include: Los Angeles to Brisbane via the Pacific Ocean:

  • From Los Angeles, guests on The Three Oceans World Cruise 2027 will arrive in Hawaii in time for the humpback whale watching season, where they will have the chance to discover two international biosphere reserves.
  • UNESCO-listed highlights of the South Pacific will include the Royal Tombs of the Kingdom of Tonga, the Historical Port Town of Levuka on Kadavu Island, Chief Roi Mata’s Domain on Champagne Beach, and the Noumea Lagoons of New Caledonia.

Brisbane to Cape Town via the Indian Ocean:

  • Spectacular UNESCO-listed landscapes and unique wildlife experiences will characterize guests' time in Australia, with the Gondwana Rainforests, the Kakadu National Park, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef - in turtle nesting season - all featuring on the itinerary.
  • Venturing on to Southeast Asia, guests will experience the rich cultural landscape of Bali, including the Borobudur Temples, and the historic city of George Town.
  • Throughout March, Silver Dawn will take guests to Singapore's Botanic Garden; the old town of Galle in Sri Lanka’s Blue Whale season; Praslin's Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve; Aapravasi Ghat, the historic remains of an immigration depot, in Port Louis, Mauritius; and the cirques of Reunion Island.
  • Silver Dawn’s arrival in South Africa coincides with the beginning of the dry season, meaning safari experiences to spot the big five will be conducted to a backdrop of verdant greenery. UNESCO sites in South Africa will include iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Robben Island.
  • Arriving at the perfect time of year to see the Victoria Falls in full flow, guests will enjoy an exclusive World Cruise event at the planet’s greatest sheet of falling water.

Cape Town to Copenhagen via the Atlantic Ocean:

  • Journeying along the west African Coast, guests will explore the historic forts and castles of Accra.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Western Mediterranean will include Bordeaux and the Port of the Moon, the Historic Center of Oporto, Lisbon’s Tower of Belém, and the Cave of Altamira in Spain.
  • In Morocco, guests can explore the spice-scented medina of Marrakesh.
  • Travelers will engage with the storied history of the United Kingdom, journeying back in time at Skara Brae in Scotland’s Orkney, the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, the medieval Caernarfon Castle in Wales, and Cornwall and West Devon’s mining landscape in England.
  • From Dublin, Silversea’s guests will explore the Archaeological Ensemble of the Bend of the Boyne — Europe's largest and most important concentration of prehistoric megalithic art.
  • Ahead of arriving in Copenhagen at the voyage’s conclusion, guests will experience many of Northern Europe’s most enriching points of interest, including Urnes Stave Church in Oslo, on a call that coincides with Norway’s National Music Day; Bergen Wharf; the Røros Mining Town in Trondheim; and Kronborg Castle, among others.

MORE TIME TO ENGAGE WITH THE DESTINATION In addition to 11 overnights in such iconic destinations as Honolulu, Papeete, Colombo, Cape Town, Singapore, Bordeaux, and more, guests will spend longer in port than on any other World Cruise, averaging over 12 hours in port, with late departures in two-thirds of all visited destinations. As such, Silversea’s guests will benefit from deeper exploration on land, with immersive experiences curated by the company’s destination experts — from Colombo, for example, guests can access the sacred city of Kandy, the Old Town of Galle, Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock), and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. BESPOKE WORLD CRUISE EVENTS

As well as a bon voyage gala dinner, a series of special events will enhance the voyage for guests, offering exclusive access to tailor-made experiences in true Silversea style:

  • On the beautiful archipelago of Hawaii, guests will honor ancient Polynesian seafarers at a sunset ho'olaule'a in Honolulu, with traditional fare, tropical libations, and a night of stargazing.
  • An included two-night overland experience from Durban to Port Elizabeth will enable travelers to journey deeper ashore into the heart of southern Africa. Guests will arrive by air to witness the majesty of the iconic Victoria Falls from every angle – accommodated in unique comfort in a luxury outpost alongside the Zambezi River.
  • Guests will enjoy a curated night of musical performance at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, with harmonies from across the Emerald Isle, fine local gastronomy, and various cultural celebrations.

CULINARY IMMERSION THROUGH S.A.L.T.

The latest Muse-class ship offers travelers immersive culinary experiences, both on board and ashore, through Silversea’s S.A.L.T. culinary program, which changes with the destination. Guests will savor approximately 350 regionally inspired dishes, 50 localized menus, 50 local cocktails, 25 S.A.L.T. experiences ashore, over 20 S.A.L.T. Talks, and over 50 S.A.L.T. Lab classes.
