The Inter-Governmental Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization designated Meknes as a World Heritage Site in December 1996.

It is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Meknes was chosen as Moulay Ismael’s capital for strategic, political, and geographical reasons. Remember that Louis XIV was the reigning monarch of France at the time. The cities of the north lost prominence under the Saâdyines’ reign. Meknes did not become the first imperial city until the end of the 17th century, with the arrival of the second Alaouite sultan. After my first trip to Morocco with a couple of female friends from Marrakech to Fes, this was my second tour with Marrakech Desert Trips. This time, my husband and I travelled to Erg Chegaga desert, and it was fantastic. At my age, I had some issues about staying in a Sahara desert camp, but it is actually rather pleasant. Marrakech Desert Trips provided us with a once-in-a-lifetime Moroccan experience. It was private tour that started in Casablanca. We headed to Chefchaouen, then Fez, before we explored the Sahara desert for 3 days. Our tour ended in Marrakech, where we were dropped off at our Riad.. It was a nicely run and unforgettable tour. We were blown away by the attention to details, the accommodations were all good value for what we paid for our tour, the food was varied as we ate in local restaurants most of the times, and the amazing views we saw gave us a tremendous sense of Morocco’s numerous natural and historical facets. Reda ( our lovely drive and guide ) kept us occupied for several hours while traveling, with wonderful music, chatting, and pauses whenever we needed. Make sure you book the Sahara tour passing by the place called Ait Benhaddou. They marked it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site but I enjoyed more the info about movies filmed there. They said they filmed Prince of Persia there. Also The Mummy with the desert scenes . Old movies, too, like Gladiator, was filmed there. I love visiting places like that! I was hesitant to book a desert tour at first but the staff here at Marrakech Tours made it great! We liked our tour guides. They helped us with our hotel and also our shuttle ride. They told us lots of amazing stories. They let us eat food native to the area. We got to see the ancient sites, too. The Kasbah is cool! This was a good idea. Take it! Book with them. We took excursion from Marrakech to Morocco desert . It starts with Marrakech and we went to the atlas mountains. We pass by Ait Ben Haddou and souvenirs there are many to buy. Saw the Kasbah which is ancient type of village there. Passing by the valley is also good to experience. We saw many date palms with growing dates! We also reach the sand dunes of Marzouga . It’s very hot but very nice! Everywhere we go, we understand everything they tell us. Drivers and tour guides even spoke our language! No problem talking. Easy to go. Thank you for booking us!
