Mount Rainier weather Mount Rainier webcam

On this day trip from Seattle to Mt. Rainier, savor Mt. Rainier’s hidden beauty on foot with waterfall walks, giant trees, alpine vistas, wildflower meadows, and wildlife watching. Stroll through the old-growth forests near Longmire, where Douglas fir, hemlock, and cedar trees dwarf visitors. The bubbling natural springs tell a story of what lies beneath this abundant and volatile landscape. Experience waterfalls and big mountain views as you wind to higher elevations. On summer Mt. Rainier tours (June-Oct), pick wild berries on a sub-alpine hiking trail. On winter tours (Nov-May), take advantage of Paradise’s legendary snowfall (and the winter solitude) on an introductory snowshoe trail.

This isn’t just another driving tour of a National Park — experience the highlights beyond the vehicle during walks and hikes tailored to your ability. Our guides run the only day tours permitted to explore more than a mile from the park road. Join a few other travelers (each tour is ten people or fewer) and a TripAdvisor ‘Hall of Fame’ guide on a real exploration of our beautiful home.

Sleep in a little – we’re bringing breakfast pastries, local coffee, and tea. Don’t waste daylight waiting in line at a busy lunch counter in the National Park – we’ll bring a fresh, local, family-style lunch to enjoy with an exceptional view. Replenish with snacks, sparkling water, and water throughout the tour. Don’t worry about a thing!

If you’re staying in downtown Seattle (hotel, Airbnb, etc.) we’ll pick you up! We will text/call you the day before your tour to confirm exact pickup timing.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

7:30-8a seattle to mt. rainier begins with downtown pickups.

Generally, our last pickup for each tour occurs at the Sheraton Grand in Seattle. This isn’t always the case – so check with us – but we consider it a default location for anyone staying outside of downtown. Let our team know where you’re staying and we’ll do everything we can to make your pickup as easy as possible.

8:30a SeaTac or Tacoma Area Pickups (By Request)

We’re happy to offer centralized pickup options en route to the National Park upon request. On our Mount Rainier tour we can offer pick-ups at:

  • SeaTac Airport Area DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Seattle Airpor t   18740 International Blvd, Seattle, WA 98188
  • Tacoma Area Courtyard by Marriott Tacoma Downtown Hotel 1515 Commerce Street Tacoma, WA 98402

10a Enter Mt. Rainier National Park

We’ll stop to press coffee, make tea, and have a light breakfast outdoors on our way to the Park entrance.

From here, the course of your day can go so many ways. Your guide will combine group preferences, weather considerations, mixed ecosystems and highlights, crowd avoidance, and more to create a lovely day. No two trips are the same! In the height of summer, your guide might even choose different sides of the mountain from day to day .

10:30a Explore Forests, Meadows, and More

You might start with a nice lower-elevation walk to get your legs moving after the commute. Down low, there are big trees, gorgeous rivers, springs, waterfalls, and more! Your walk might be one to three miles.

12:15p Lunch Outdoors

Arrive at a primary visitor center (Paradise or Sunrise) and enjoy a little downtime before lunch to use the restroom, browse interpretive info, photograph flowers (or snow), get your National Park passport stamped, or find a quick gift for a loved one back home. If the weather is decent, you’ll enjoy a meal outdoors. In winter, we’ll likely opt for a comfortable spot inside if the weather is snowy or cold.

1:15p Waterfalls, Rivers, Big Trees, Oh My!

We’ll set off on another walkabout or two. You might head out straight from lunch – working up and along the mountain for views, open meadows, and alpine forests. You might drive a bit to set up an additional walk somewhere. All told, you might walk two to four miles in the afternoon (depending on your other activities).

4p Begin Your Journey Back to Seattle

Around 4:00 we’ll start to head for Seattle.

6 :15p Downtown Seattle Drop-Offs

We’ll drop travelers off where we found them (or another preferred spot nearby).

Evergreen Escapes & Mt. Rainier

Mount rainier offers a myriad of opportunities to experience world-class scenery..

If you’re unfamiliar with the national park, it can be a little overwhelming to know which of the five entrances to use, what to see, and how to get the most out of your visit. Here’s where a professional tour guide can be a tremendous resource. Dozens of companies offer guided tours of Mount Rainier National Park. Before selecting a tour guide, think about what you hope to gain. Do you want a narrated bus ride through the park? Or do you want something more impactful? Recently we had a chance to catch up with  Martin Wentzel , an Evergreen Escapes guide since 2013. Here’s what we discussed.

You’ve been offering tours for 13 years and earned the TripAdvisor “Hall of Fame” status. You’ve been recognized by National Geographic Traveler, CNN, Huffington Post, and USA Today. Does returning to Rainier year after year ever get old?

For me, returning to Mt. Rainier year after year never gets old.  The park is just so beautiful and diverse that visiting excites me every single time.  I notice the subtle changes from week to week, the more obvious changes from month to month, and the dramatic changes from season to season.  It is an awe-inspiring wonderland that satisfies my desire for seeking adventure and witnessing undisturbed natural beauty.

What do you include in an Evergreen Escapes tour from Seattle to Mt. Rainier National Park?

On the way to Mt Rainier from Seattle my tour typically includes a blend of the natural history of the Pacific Northwest, the history and stories of the indigenous peoples who lived in the river valleys of Tahoma, themes of creation and destruction as we drive through volcanic hazard zones, impacts of western influence and industrialization, and a couple of corny jokes as well.

When is the best time to take one of your Rainier tours?

The best time to take one of my Rainier tours depends on the guest because the experience differs vastly from season to season.  Each season is equally amazing.  There is a better chance of seeing the mountain while visiting in the summer months, but that also brings more crowds and warmer temperatures. The fall is great for vibrant colors in the subalpine areas.  Winter tours allow the guests to see more snow than they can even imagine, and we have a blast exploring the Paradise area on snowshoes, almost 20 feet above the ground level where flowers bloomed just months before.  Spring on Rainier is filled with the energy of freshly sprouted vegetation, charging waterfalls, and an abundance of wildlife becoming more active.  So for me, it’s not easy to pick a favorite time of year since every time is glorious for different reasons.

Why is sustainability so important to you?

Sustainability is important to me because our planet is reaching a critical situation.  We have limited resources and more humans than ever using these resources.  The changing climate is impacting everyone, everywhere.  In addition to solving energy and resource problems, for the health of our environment and the survival of the human race, the only option is to focus on sustainability.

Seattle Walking Tours

Seattle Travel Guide › Walking & Hiking Tours Updated: October 15, 2023 By Santorini Dave

Walking tour of Pike Place Market in Seattle.

The Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour (small-group) is an excellent tour of the highlights and hidden gems of Pike Place Market and downtown Seattle.

The Best Walking Tours in Seattle • Best Food & Walking Tour: Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour is our favorite tour in downtown Seattle. 1. Evergreen Escapes Evergreen Escapes offers fantastic day tours and hikes in Seattle’s many nearby wilderness areas: Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks, Mount Saint Helens , the North Cascades , and Snoqualmie Falls . These small group tours are capped at ten guests, and include transportation in a Mercedes van, a day hike, and gourmet lunch with local wine. Tours run year-round, with snow-shoeing replacing day hikes in the winter months, when needed. Evergreen Escapes also offers a private San Juan kayak and whale-watching tour in the summer months, with optional sea-plane or overnight add-on. Tours pick up at downtown hotels. Guests staying elsewhere meet the tour at Hotel Monaco. 2. Tours Northwest Tours Northwest offers a Mount Rainier National Park day tour that’s a great option for those looking for an easy way to see the park. Informative guides will pick you up at your downtown or Sea-Tac hotel, and customize the trip to your desired activity level. A grocery stop is offered, to buy items for a picnic lunch on the mountain, or you can purchase food at the park’s visitor center while you’re there. This tour runs May through November. Tours pick up at Seattle and SeaTac area hotels. 3. Olympic Sculpture Park The Olympic Sculpture Park is a branch of Seattle Art Museum located along Seattle’s downtown waterfront, just downhill from Seattle Center. It’s home to a great collection of modern works by contemporary artists: most notably, Alexander Calder, Claes Oldenburg, and Louise Bourgeois. Besides boasting an impressive collection, the Sculpture Park is one of downtown Seattle’s few green spaces, set amid picturesque views of the sound, mountains, and ferries. Admission is free, and hour-long public tours are offered at 1pm on weekends from April through November. Check the SAM events calendar for details. Tours depart from the Sculpture Park’s Paccar Pavilion. 4. Klondike Museum Walking Tour This small museum in Pioneer Square is actually a pint-sized National Park, filled with artifacts and exhibits highlighting Seattle’s role in the Klondike gold rush of the 1890’s. They offer free 45-60 minute walking tours of the Pioneer Square neighborhood in the summer months, and the rest of the year provide a Trail to Treasure map (available at some tourist offices), so that visitors can walk it on their own. Tours depart from the Klondike Museum Vistor Center, at 319 2nd Avenue South. 5. Seattle Architecture Foundation These volunteer-led downtown walking tours are organized around such architectural themes as Northwest Art Deco Skyscrapers, Design Details, and Hidden Spaces in Public Places. No previous experience with architecture is required; you’ll learn as you go – not only about the buildings, but about the city and its history, as well. Tours run year-round, rain or shine (but only on Saturdays in the winter months). Outside of downtown, SAF also leads tours in the neighborhoods of Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, South Lake Union, as well as the University of Washington campus. Not recommended for children under 12. Tours depart from various locations, check website for details.

Yes, Seattle is highly walkable for tourists, particularly in areas like downtown, Pike Place Market, and the waterfront. However, the city’s hilly topography can be challenging. Public transportation, including buses and the light rail, is readily available for longer distances or to navigate the city’s more steeply inclined areas.

Is It Safe To Go To Downtown Seattle?

Yes, downtown Seattle is generally safe. Like any major city, staying aware of your surroundings is always important, especially at night. But popular tourist areas are well-lit and often busy within the city. Use common sense, like avoiding deserted areas, and you should have a pleasant and safe visit to Seattle’s vibrant downtown district.

EVERGREEN ESCAPES (Seattle) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Seattle’s new urban hiking group brings friendship and adventure

How to seattle.

On a Sunday in April, I joined an urban hike where, it felt, Seattle’s notorious Freeze did not exist. The group of more than 100 people, mostly in their 20s and 30s — many of whom had just met — chatted comfortably as we walked through West Seattle.

On our 5-mile loop from Alki Beach, we passed busy restaurants, a peaceful, old-growth forest and quaint rows of houses. The conversations around me ranged from the basic “get-to-know-you” questions to passion projects and the lingering effects of pandemic isolation.

The group — participating in the new walking club Out and About, organized by Seattle content creator Sara Anfuso — sprawled over several blocks, and at least two drivers rolled down their car windows to ask what was going on.

“A walking group from Instagram,” someone explained.

“Look up @servedbysara!” someone else shouted.

Anfuso formed the group after her Instagram posts on long-distance walking took off in January. A  video about what she was bringing  to “[walk] 14 miles across Seattle to get boba with friends” was viewed more than 4 million times, helping her reach her current 47,000 followers.

Then, comments requesting in-person walks prompted her to bring the online community into the real world with Out and About, which joins other local walking groups like the Emerald City Wanderers and the Seattle Wellness Society . While there’s lots to be said about urban hiking around Seattle, one of the biggest draws of the group, Anfuso said, is “meeting so many people who aren’t in your sphere.”

“I have met so many amazing people I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise,” said Anfuso, who’s from San Diego but moved to Seattle last year.

In her experience, people walking Seattle’s streets seem less likely to say hi to each other than their counterparts in San Diego, Anfuso said. But the Alki Beach walk felt like a pocket of community where striking up a conversation with someone new was completely normal and anyone could become a friend in a matter of minutes.

As we strolled down Alki Avenue, I posed a question — what extreme sport would you try, if any? — to the small group I was walking with and someone several paces ahead of us whipped around to answer, naturally joining the conversation. Before the post-walk cold plunge into the Sound (the event was co-hosted by the local group Coldwater Collective ), I watched someone lend his sandals to a near-stranger who wanted to wade into the water without so much as introducing himself. And as shivering cold-plungers dried up and got dressed on shore, several exchanged contact information or formed group chats to stay in touch.

Most of the people I talked to on the walk said they found the group on Instagram, but they appreciated that Out and About brought social media connections together in person. As one walker told me, people are tired of spending so much time on their phones, perhaps explaining the impressive attendance at the real-life event.

Besides meeting people, there’s more to why Seattleites keep showing up for urban hikes or why distance walking through cities (which, to Anfuso, generally means walking 10 or more miles) has been drawing attention online.

Turning a city walk into an adventure can also be more accessible for people without cars. “There’s such a culture here of only getting out to the mountains,” Anfuso said, and while spending time in nature has plenty of upsides, it can leave out people without good transportation options.

Then there’s the infrastructure that makes urban hiking feasible. Walking paths in Seattle, from the Burke-Gilman Trail to the path along the 520 bridge, make planning out long walking routes through the city easier, Anfuso said. And in the Emerald City, even urban walks will likely include green spaces — we don’t rank among the country’s Top 10 park systems for nothing.

It’s also a way to get to know your city, said Janelle Bentley, another local Instagram content creator who walked the Seattle Olmsted 50, a five-section, 50-kilometer route from Ballard to Rainier Beach, with Anfuso.

“You get to see so many different aspects of the area that you live in,” she said. Bentley always seems to find “a new hidden gem” when she walks, from the “absolutely gorgeous” Frink Park in Leschi, to community spaces like the gallery Black Arts Love in First Hill and restaurants and coffee shops around the city.

“There’s so many places that you can enjoy just by simply walking around,” she said. “You can discover things that way.”

Going walking?

If you’re heading out on your own urban distance walk, Anfuso recommends not wearing headphones to stay aware of your surroundings, planning your route ahead of time to make sure it passes through safe areas and bringing plenty of food. She also likes to bring a backpack for any unexpected purchases (like the time she came across Ben’s Bread Co. and wanted to bring home some sourdough).
