4X4 Safari Expedition

Tour Includes: The main village of Fare Main shops, groceries, pier and administrative offices.

The village of Maeva: The most impressive archaeological site located lagoonside in the village of Maeva includes one main platform and several smaller marae. This site even extends on acres mountainside. Your guide will explain you what these marae were designed for in ancient times. It is also in the village of Maeva that you can see former stone fish traps; a few fishermen still use this ancient technique.

Vanilla plantation: Visit and learn how the plant is grown, the flower pollinated and the vanilla bean dried to give this treasure of fragrance and taste.

Pearl farm: Visit the only pearl farm on the island accessible by boat only a few minutes from the island. Your host will explain the long process before being able to collect the precious black pearl. “Belvedere” viewpoint: Stop by the Belvedere viewpoint to take pictures and enjoy the view on the lagoon and bay.

Eels in the village of Faie: The huge blue-eyed eels…meet them in a river in the village of Faie.

The South of the island: The smallest of the 2 islands, is mostly agricultural but also houses a few marae.

Introduction to Huahine by Poe

Tour Visits: Village of Fare The main village of Huahine with its the only supermarket of the island and the popular pier, main halt for cruise ships.

Marae of Maeva village: Former village of the royalty, Maeva still shelters numerous of “marae” (ancient temples). Stop before melons and watermelons plantations.

Pearl Farm: Stop at the overwater pearl farm where you will learn about the different steps before being able to collect a pearl from the mother of a Pearl shell. On the spot, Pearls are also available for sale.

Blue-eyed eels: Stop at the river of the blue-eyed eels in Faie before heading to a panoramic view point.

Vanilla plantation: The opportunity to learn more about this orchid and the long process before tasting this spice recognizable by its delicate scent.

Huahine – Boating & Jet Ski

Poe lagoon boat tour and picnic.

At midday, reach the beautiful “motu” (islet) of Tefarerii for the picnic, enjoy a coconut show, great Polynesian marinated fish preparation, local food, island fruits : a true homemade lunch seated in the turquoise water !!! Water and fruit juice are included. Enjoy a Pareo show, learn & make a Polynesian basket with coconut leaves… After your picnic lunch, the tour will progress towards Parea to visit the “Garden of the Wild Ray”s, then Fare for final Coral Garden.

Sacred sites and legendary places.

Village of Maeva: Huahine is renowned for its village of Maeva, where all district chiefs once lived side by side and worshiped their ancestors at their respective marae. Marae are places including stone structures set aside for religious rites and ceremonies. 200 archaeological stone structures have survived centuries of natural destruction. These structures lie within yards of one another along the shore of Lake Fauna Nui and on the sacred and scenic Matairea Hill.

Vanilla plantation and fish traps: Also located in the village of Maeva, you will visit a vanilla plantation and learn how this plant cultivated and the beans prepared to become this treasure of flavor. The village of Maeva is also sheltering the remains of stone fish traps unique in French Polynesia. There are still fishermen using stone traps in the village.

Motu Maeva, Marae Manunu: You will pass a watermelon plantation, the most tasteful are from Huahine! A stop on a beach oceanside before visiting Marae Manunu where is located the tomb of Raiti the last great priest of the village of Maeva.

Faie: The home of the sacred blue eyes eels…you will also stop by the belvedere view point on the bay of Maroe.

Huahine Iti: You will enjoy the view on the magnificent lagoon of Huahine from Mahuti view point before continuing the discovery of the island botany through your guide.

• An anthropological experience My wife and I visited Huahine on our honeymoon in November of 2013. This is the first review I have ever written, which should be a testament to how much I enjoyed this tour. Owner/operator Paul and I made quick friends at the start of the tour. My wife and I spent about 5 days total on huahine, and this tour was definitely one of the highlights. The trip around the island is a no frills truck ride, but the stops made, and the information covered, for me, provided a very raw and educational trip that I still think about often. I don't remember how much it cost or how long it lasted, but I enjoyed this tour very much. I highly recommend it. Paul, I apologize for the 3 year delay! You’ll be picked up directly at your hotel in Huahine at around 8:00 am. After a brief introduction to the day and the vehicle you’ll be traveling in, it’s time to set off!

First Overview of Huahine Island

The route on Huahine Nui and Iti is designed to take you through the island’s most beautiful landscapes. You’ll reach the viewpoints of the Tefarerii belvedere and the Maroe bridge. Enjoy breathtaking views over the lagoon. Your guide will take this opportunity to give you a general explanation of Huahine’s history.

Discovering Legends and Traditions in Huahine

You’ll discover a curiosity of the village of Faie: the sacred eels with their enigmatic blue eyes. Then your guide will introduce you to the incredible traditional fish traps, still intact and fascinating.

Civilization and Temples

This private Safari Day Tour on Huahine will take you to discover the archaeological sites of the Manunu and Anini marae. The former, dedicated to war, recalls the battles of yesteryear against neighboring islands. The second was dedicated to the memory of the dead and funeral rites. A visit to Huahine’s local museum, Fare Pote, will reveal the secrets of Polynesian navigation and migration.

Visit a Pearl Farm and a Vanilla Plantation

A surprise break takes you out of the 4×4 and into a pirogue bound for a pearl farm. You’ll then visit a vanilla plantation. Indeed, vanilla is a local delicacy that cannot be ignored. As well as learning about growing and harvesting techniques, you’ll be intoxicated by the flavors of vanilla.

Vegetarian Lunch Break

In a natural setting by the lagoon, a wonderful vegetarian lunch awaits you. Tropical fruits, generous salads and tasty refreshments: a typically local Polynesian meal!

Return to Your Hotel

There are endless ways to stay active in Huahine. With so many things to do, you can explore the island from top to bottom and visit the many ancient marae throughout its lush hillsides. Below you will find a complete excursion guide featuring information on all land and water activities available on the island of Huahine. *Activities can only be booked in conjunction with Tahiti Legends packages, and are not sold separately. All pricing below is per person unless otherwise noted. Please note some activities may require a minimum number of participants to operate on a given day, and black out dates restrictions may apply for cruise arrivals. Please inquire at time of booking.

4x4 Island Tour

Departure: 8:30am - duration: 3 hours 30 minutes.

Explore the island of Huahine on this 4x4 island tour. Start by visiting Fare, the main town of Huahine, followed by a visit to the village of Maeva where you'll tour the ancient Marae (archaeological sites). You'll then continue on and visit a vanilla plantation and then have a chance to see the sacred blue-eyed eels of Faie. You'll end the tour with a stop for a panoramic view at the Belvedere lookout point. Fruit and soft drinks are provided on the tour. Tour requires a minimum of 4 persons to operate. 

Motu Picnic 3-in-1 Tour, Huahine

Departure: 9am - duration: 7 hours.

Journey aboard an outrigger canoe and explore the island of Huahine Iti and its lush surroundings. You’ll visit the island's only black pearl farm, snorkel through vibrant coral gardens, and stop at the natural aquarium to meet fish and sharks. You’ll also stop to have a picnic lunch with live traditional music where you’ll try the island’s traditional dish, poisson cru. Other items to be prepared are chicken, fish, salads, fruits, and an open bar of water, juices, Hinano beers and punch. Requires a minimum of 4 persons to operate.

Jet Ski Guided Tour

Departure: 9am - duration: 2 hours 15 minutes.

Enjoy a thrilling Jet Ski ride across Huahine`s blue lagoon and tour Huahine Iti. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you`ll cruise the shallow waters around the island. You`ll encounter stingrays, eagle rays, and may even see a few black-tip reef sharks or dolphins. This excursion ends with a visit to a motu for swimming and photos. The price is based on 2 persons per jet ski.

On this intimate excursion you'll have the opportunity to visit a pearl farm, chances to go snorkeling in coral gardens, and enjoy a private picnic on the water featuring the island's specialty, poisson cru, lobster, mahi mahi with vanilla sauce, salads, fruits, Champagne, wine, beer, juice, and water. You have the choice of travelling on this excursion by either catamaran or jetski. Price is per person, based on one couple sharing picnic.

Your tour will depart the pier by off-road vehicle . You will cross the bridge to Huahine-nui (big Huahine) and drive around the majestic bay where the ship is anchored.

Then, ascend the island's steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay. This is your chance to take some beautiful photos.

Stop to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.

A panoramic drive then takes you along Lake Fauna Nui to Maeva -- among the most extensive archaeological sites in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish-traps still in use today, after having been restored by archaeologists.

Take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe ride to visit the Huahine Pearl Farm & Pottery facility, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see some rather interesting blue pottery. The latter is made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon during pearl farming activities. The pottery and the pearls are available for purchase.

A snorkeling adventure in the company of Willy -- an expert in all things local -- takes you out onto the lagoon in another outrigger canoe. Your destination is Motu Tefarerii . This island sits in the blue lagoon, surrounded by tropical fish. Explore the underwater world; then, return to the ship with spectacular views of the island.

Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen and a hat. The snorkeling is suitable for all levels of snorkeling experience; beginners can start in shallow water standing and go as far out as is comfortable. Restrooms are available at the Pearl Farm marina and at Motu Tefarerii.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
