How to watch Australian Netflix Overseas
Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
If you’re looking for a quick and beginner-friendly way to watch Australian Netflix overseas then this is the guide you’re looking for.
In this guide I’m going to show you the easiest way you can watch the Australian Netflix site from overseas. So if you’re an Aussie abroad or you just want to tap into the great selection of movies and TV shows on the Australia Netflix site, read on.
Why is Australian Netflix blocked outside Australia?
Netflix is without question the best online streaming service in the world.
Australian Netflix is actually one of the newer regions to be added but in the past few years since launch it’s grown to have one of the biggest catalogues of movies and TV shows. In fact, Australian site Finder proves that to be true listing all their available movies and TV shows
Australian Netflix even has some movies that even the US or UK Netflix websites don’t have. For example in 2018 Australian Netflix got Wonder Women and Dunkirk, yet both movies were nowhere else to be seen. In 2019 it was Justice League and so on.
Netflix Australia is like all other regions of Netflix, it differs based on content and unless you’re in the country, you can’t access it. You can only access the Netflix site of the country you’re physically in.
Well, that us unless you use a simple solution called a VPN .
What’s a VPN and what does it do?
A VPN is a legal privacy app that allows you to change your location . The great thing about this is it means you can fool websites into thinking you’re somewhere else.
If you’ve already clicked, this means you can use a VPN to trick Netflix into thinking you’re in Australia .
The result? You can watch Australian Netflix overseas from anywhere in the world.
VPN services such as those from the provider ExpressVPN come as an app for your computer, laptop, mobile and even your Amazon Fire TV / Firestick .
Firstly you’ll need to get a VPN and with thousands to choose from it can be a difficult choice. Not all work so it pays to do your research. Below you’ll find my top recommendation and how to use it.
Our #1 Recommended VPN to watch
30-day money back guarantee
The first thing you need to do is choose a VPN service. There are hundreds and even I get overloaded with the sheer amount of choice.
My recommended VPN service and the one I’ve been using regularly to watch Australian Netflix overseas is ExpressVPN .
They’ve got a really handy 30-day money back guarantee . This means if you can’t get it working then you can simply get your money back. They also let you use 1 service on up to 3 devices at the same time so you can share it across your household with other family members.
They’re actually the only VPN service I know of that works with Australian Netflix. I tried at least 15 other leading services and none worked.
So to watch Australia Netflix overseas just follow the steps below.
How to watch Australian Netflix Overseas Step-by-Step:
- Visit the ExpressVPN website by clicking here and sign up for their service.
- Go to the Products section of their website and download their app for your device.
- Open the downloaded app and login when required.
- Select Australia from the list.
- Press Connect .
The app will start to connect for you. This should only take between 15 – 30 seconds.
Once the ExpressVPN app has connected you’re free to visit the Netflix website or open the Netflix app. You’ll now have access to the Australian Netflix catalogue of movies and TV shows.
Watch Aussie Netflix with ExpressVPN.
When you’ve finished watching just press the disconnect button on the ExpressVPN app and everything returns to normal.
You can reconnect again in the future whenever you want. There are no limits on how much you can connect or use.
Troubleshooting
To avoid any issues you should connect to the Sydney location as advised above.
If however when you visit Netflix or use the app it tells you that you’re using a ‘proxy or unblocker’ then you’ll need to change location.
This is simple and just means instead of selecting Sydney you should select another. Try one of the other Sydney locations or even Brisbane, Perth or Melbourne. It won’t take long to find a working connection.
How does a VPN even work?
If you’re interested how a VPN works then it really isn’t difficult to understand.
Netflix supplies you movies and TV shows based on your physical location. It does this by checking your internet connection.
It doesn’t actually matter where you pay your Netflix bill. For example you can have a subscription in Australia but if you’re in the UK then you’ll get the UK Netflix catalogue .
A VPN works by first re-routing your request. When you use a VPN like ExpressVPN it first sends your request to one of their own servers in Australia.
A server is basically a powerful computer housed in a big centre with other computers carrying out tasks like moving data around.
That server then passes on the request to access Netflix. Netflix sees the computer in Australia and so serve up the Australian Netflix catalogue.
The ExpressVPN server then passes the movie or TV show back to you.
It’s all a seamless process and you won’t even know it’s taking place. The VPN app takes care of it all for you. You just use Netflix as you normally would, the only difference is you can watch Australian Netflix overseas.
Recap: How to watch Australian Netflix overseas
So you want to watch Australian Netflix overseas ? For this you’ll need a VPN service .
I recommend you use the VPN service from ExpressVPN because they’re actually the only provider I can find that works with Australian Netflix.
You can get an ExpressVPN service by clicking the button below. Once you’ve signed up for their service download their app and open it.
You should then connect to Australia. Now visit the Netflix website or open the Netflix app and you’ll have access to the Australian Netflix catalogue overseas from any country in the world.

Somebody feed phil, boy swallows universe.
It's been a long time since we first caught word that Trent Dalton's famed Boy Swallows Universe was being transformed into a series for Netflix. While the wait has been long, Netflix has finally dropped the show and it's definitely been worth it.
An epic coming-of-age story set in 1980s Brisbane, Eli Bell is just trying to understand what it means to become a good man, but the adult world serves up many a brutal reality. This one also stars a few familiar faces including Simon Baker, Anthony LaPaglia, Travis Fimmel and Phoebe Tonkin.
From the dazzling world of Shondaland and under the fresh guidance of showrunner Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is making a bold return for its third season. This time around, the spotlight is on Penelope Featherington (played by the brilliant Nicola Coughlan), who's finally kicked her long-standing crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) to the curb. Why, you ask? Well, after catching wind of Colin's less-than-flattering remarks about her in the previous season, Penelope's had enough.
Now, Penelope's got her sights set on a new quest—landing herself a husband. Not just any husband, though. She's on the lookout for someone who'll let her maintain her secret life as the mysterious Lady Whistledown, far away from the prying eyes of her mother and sisters. But here's the catch: Penelope's confidence is on shaky ground, and her attempts in the marriage market are anything but smooth. As to when we can expect season three to drop, Netflix has announced it will be split into two four-episode parts, with part one premiering on May 16, 2024, followed by part two on June 13, 2024.
Season six of The Crown is here so settle in. This controversial iteration of episodes is all about the relationship between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a horrendous car crash. Prince William also tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion.
The critically acclaimed series, Top Boy , has returned to Netflix for one more season, set to be the final chapter that will decide who can reign as Top Boy of Summerhouse. Sully’s actions at the end of the last series have rewritten his business rules with Dushane. As new shared problems come into play, everything they've built basically comes under threat from forces outside and within their empire.

Translatlantic
Transatlantic is inspired by the true story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Emergency Rescue Committee. Risking their lives to help more than 2000 refugees escape occupied France, including many artists on the Nazis’ most-wanted list.

Heartbreak High
The reimagining of the 90s Australian YA series, which ran for seven seasons, follows Amerie who forges a mysterious and very public rift with her ride-or-die Harper at Hartley High. With her new friends, outsiders Quinni and Darren, Amerie tries to repair her reputation, while navigating love, sex, and heartbreak. We are swooning hard.
Stranger Things
It's been a hot minute since we binged the entirety of Stranger Things season four, volume one but fear not—volume two is close. In case you haven't caught up (you'll want to get on that, stat), we won't drop any spoilers from the end of volume two however, we did have some tissues nearby. The quest to end Vecna's curse however continues.
Peaky Blinders
If you haven’t watched this one yet, firstly—shame on you. Secondly, it’s basically about a notorious gang in 1919 Birmingham, England, led by the fierce Tommy Shelby, a crime boss set on moving up in the world no matter the cost. Season six kicks off at Norfolk Prison where Michael is released and obviously, wants some hardcore revenge on ol’ TShelby. We’re also due to see whether Lizzie and Tommy and stick it out after last season’s scandalous reveal.
Love, Death & Robots
In our eyes, Love Death & Robots is quite possibly one of the best TV series around. If you’ve been watching since season one, you’ll know exactly why. If you’ve enver been into animation, LDR is the one show that will change your mind. This gem brings us a compilation of animated short stories, spanning across multiple genres such as, fantasy, fiction, horror and comedy. Each episode was produced with the intention of being easy to watch, but hard to forget and range from five to 17-minute stories.
Heartstopper
While most high school series these days delve into sex and drugs (and rock 'n' roll?), Heartstopper is a new-age show bound to bring some heartwarming scenes to weekend Netflix binge. The show, an adaptation of Alice Oseman's webcomic and graphic novel of the same name, spans eight episodes whereby teenagers Charlie and Nick discover their unlikely friendship might be something a little bit more as they navigate their way through the cesspit of high school drama and young love.
Anatomy Of A Scandal
If you’ve read the bestselling novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughn, you’ll know this is a big deal. A psychological thriller and gripping courtroom drama, the series infiltrates Britain's elite through a personal and political scandal. James and Sophie Whitehouse live in a blissful world. A Minister in Parliament, a loving family at home, James' trajectory appears without limits. Until a scandalous secret suddenly comes to light. Barrister Kate Woodcroft has a trajectory of her own, and her prosecution threatens to tear into Westminster and the Whitehouse marriage. This is a juicy series you can't afford to miss.
Russian Doll
Set four years after Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) escaped mortality’s time loop together, season two of Russian Doll will continue its humorous and sci-fi take. This season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure.
Human Resources
From the inventive minds that brought us the award-winning adult animation, Big Mouth comes the even edgier and adult-ier Human Resources . The spin-off pulls back the curtain on the daily lives of the creatures—Hormone Monsters, Depression Kitties, Shame Wizards and many more, helping humans journey through every aspect of life from puberty to parenthood to the twilight years. Featuring an all-star voice cast— including Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph and David Thewlis reprising their Big Mouth roles.
Pieces Of Her
The last time we saw Toni Collete grace our screens in a Netflix series was when Unbelievable dropped and we all lost our collective marbles. It was great, no? So it goes without saying her next show, Pieces Of Her , is an unmissable piece of content you need in your life.
In a sleepy Georgia town, a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver and her mother Laura. Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.
All Of Us Are Dead
We hate to make parallels to Squid Game but let's just say All Of Us Are Dead is the new K-series that will fill that void. A group of students trapped in a high school find themselves in dire situations as they seek to be rescued from a zombie invasion of their school. It’s heinous, it’s messy and it’s damn amazing.
The Sinner season four is here and look, regardless of your season three thoughts—you’re going to watch it. As always, Detective Harry Ambrose finds himself investigating atrocious murder cases, this time, within the mysterious happenings of a small fishing town.
We’re calling it, this is the year animation will truly shine so set your sights on Netflix’s fresh animated dark comedy, The House . This series is, unsurprisingly, about a house and the three wacky tales of the individuals that made it their home. The stop-motion anthology has been making big headlines so make sure you don’t miss out and watch it here.
It feels like an eternity since we first set our sights on the nationally-ranked Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas. The docuseries was an Emmy-winning breakout sensation and our non-athletic souls were privy to learning all things mat talk, the difference between spotters and flyers and every intricate detail of the cheer-lebrity world.
Now, season two is here (January 12) and this time there’s buzz around Navarro’s newfound stardom that threatens to alter the dynamic of the cheer team, COVID-19 upends the 2020 cheer season and a serious criminal accusation is levied at one of the teammates. Against that dramatic backdrop, the new nine-episode season expands to showcase Navarro’s fiercest rival as well—Trinity Valley Community College.
Lost In Space
In the third and final season of Lost in Space , the stakes are higher than ever and the Robinson family's survival instincts will be put to the ultimate test. After a year of being trapped on a mysterious planet, Judy, Penny, Will and the Robot must lead the 97 young Colonists in a harrowing evacuation—but not before secrets are unearthed that will change their lives forever. Meanwhile John and Maureen must battle overwhelming odds as they try to reunite with their kids. The Robinsons will have to grapple with the emotional challenge of not just being lost—but being separated from the ones they love... as they face the greatest alien threat yet.
Unbelievable demonstrations of hell take place in the middle of Seoul right in front of crowds. Mysterious beings condemn individuals to be Hellbound , and otherworldly beings appear exactly at the specified time to kill the condemned in a brutal burning.
Rising above the utter chaos resulting from these inexplicable supernatural occurrences is the commanding voice of Jung Jinsu, the leader of an up-and-coming religious organization, The New Truth. He claims that only sinners are marked for condemnation and that these occurrences represent the divine will to make humans righteous. A group of his followers with blind faith, the Arrowhead, take into their own hands the punishment of those who go against the divine will.
Narcos: Mexico
Set in the 90s, when the globalization of the drug business ignites, Season three examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s arrest. As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge. But in this war, truth is the first casualty - and every arrest, murder and take-done only pushes real victory further away…

Netflix Australia Plans & Prices
Posted by Dean Heckscher 20/05/2023
If you’re not one of the millions of people around the world already subscribed to Netflix, what’s going on? Are you okay? Maybe you’ve been a loyal Stan fan since day one, or you’ve been busy with Disney+ and Baby Yoda. These are legitimate excuses, but there’s no time for that now, especially when new binge-worthy content is consistently being released on Netflix.
Netflix boasts an impressive library of movies and TV shows, from trashy eye-rolling reality shows like Too Hot to Handle to the surprise Spanish hit that is Money Heist (is it socially acceptable to watch all four seasons in one weekend? Asking for a friend). Basically, there has never been a better time to jump on board one of the biggest bandwagons in the world. Or, if you already have a Netflix account, maybe you’re looking to bump up the subscription to enable higher resolution or multiple screen sharing.
Well, whatever the case, you’ve come to the right place. Read on as Canstar Blue dissects Netflix plans and prices in Australia to help you find the best deal for you (and the people who leach off your account).
What are the different Netflix streaming plans?
When it comes to deciding on a subscription plan, Netflix offers four different options. For those of you familiar with ‘package’ subscriptions, such as Foxtel Premium or Foxtel Sport , you’ll be pleased to hear that with Netflix, all four plans – Basic with Ads, Basic, Standard and Premium – grant you access to the entire library.
- The newest addition to Netflix, Basic with Ads, costs just $6.99 per month, but you’ll have to sit through a few ads during your binge session.
- The Basic Plan is the cheapest at just $10.99/month, but it only offers streaming in standard definition (SD) and only with one device at a time (meaning it’s probably best not to share a Basic Plan with a friend or family).
- The Standard Plan comes in at $16.99/month and bumps the quality up to High Definition (HD), whilst allowing two devices to stream content simultaneously.
- The Premium Plan is a bigger jump in price at $22.99/month, but you can see why – subscribers can enjoy definition up to Ultra HD as well as streaming content on four different devices simultaneously.
How much does Netflix cost in Australia?
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll get out of each plan, including costs.
Prices taken from Netflix website. Accurate as of May, 2023.
It should also be noted that in May 2023, Netflix rolled out its crackdown on password sharing , meaning that those who have been using an account of someone who they don’t live with, they may be asked to create their own account, or be locked out.

Are you looking for something binge-worthy? Why not check out BINGE? With multiple subscription plans available, you can choose a plan that suits you (or your family) and settle in for a night on the couch with a wide range of movies and shows!
Which Netflix plan should I choose?
At the end of the day, what Netflix plan is best for you should come down to personal preference and your current situation. For example, if you’re living alone and don’t mind watching content at standard definition, why not save some money with the Basic Plan? But if you’re a fan of high definition quality, or you’re signing up as part of a family, then it may be worth splashing out on the Standard or Premium Plan.
Additionally, if you’re someone with limited data and looking to download content onto your device to later watch offline, we would highly recommend the Standard or Premium plan. The more devices you can log into, the more you can download and store content, in turn potentially saving money on internet and data.
How much data does Netflix use?
How much data Netflix uses can vary between 0.7GB to 7GB per hour, depending on which resolution you’re streaming in. Here’s an outline below of how much data you may be using per plan and resolution.
- Basic Plan on Standard Definition uses around 0.7GB per hour
- Premium Plan on High Definition uses around 3GB per hour
- Premium Plan on Ultra HD (4K) uses around 7GB per hour
To further explain; SD on the Basic Plan will only stream content at around 480p, which uses about 0.7GB per hour. HD on the Standard Plan will stream at around 1080p, which uses about 3GB per hour – a pretty big jump. An even larger jump is the Premium Plan which streams at Ultra HD (also known as 4K, although only if your device supports it). Ultra HD offers content at a quality up to 2160p, and it chews through around 7GB per hour.
Although a higher quality will make for cinematic-like viewing, you need to think about how strong your internet connection is and if your plan can support the quality (you don’t want any nasty surprises on your next bill). Similarly, you don’t want to be constantly waiting for your show to finish buffering, meaning looking at your current internet capabilities before signing up can save you a bit of frustration when movie night comes around.
Does Netflix have a free trial?
Unfortunately, Netflix no longer offers a free trial for Australian customers. If you want to try Netflix, you’ll have to sign up for at least one month at $6.99. However, there are no lock-in contracts, so if you don’t like what you see you can easily cancel your subscription before the month is up.
What devices are compatible with Netflix Australia?
There are countless devices and ways to stream Netflix, including:
- Smartphones
- Streaming media players such as Chromecast and Roku
- Game consoles
- Set-top boxes
- Blu-Ray Players

Netflix review: Still one of the best
With killer original content and an exceptional UI, Netflix is still the market leader.
The best evidence for the quality of Netflix Australia is just how ubiquitous it has become in a relatively short period of time. Over 14 million Australians have access to a Netflix account , and it’s so popular and normalised that we hardly notice it anymore.
Netflix Australia does have the occasional weak spot – particularly in the way of recent release movies, regular price hikes and a brutal crackdown on password sharing– but the UI, picture quality and functionality (made even better by third parties ) are reason enough for its industry-leading status. Throw in some of the best original content out there and signing up becomes a no-brainer.
Though not as expansive as American Netflix, with a library of almost 4,000 movies and nearly 2,000 TV shows, Netflix Australia has more content than any of us could (or should) consume in a lifetime. If you can fight off the evening-long bouts of overwhelmed indecision, you’ll find everything from blockbuster action films, quirky cooking shows, true crime documentaries, trashy (yet addictive) reality series, cute kids cartoons, and must-watch exclusive programs.
Still, it’s now one of many streaming services available in Australia , and you might be on the fence about whether or not it’s worth the monthly fee. In our review, we’ll break down everything you need to know about Netflix, and how it compares to similar services.
You can’t watch it all, so we watch it for you.
Netflix Australia price
- $6.99 for Basic with Ads
- $10.99 for Basic
- $16.99 for Standard
- $22.99 for Premium
- No free trial
When it first launched in Australia in 2015, Netflix offered three plans, ranging in price from $8.99 to $14.99. Though the three plans are essentially the same, after a number of incremental price increases in recent years, those monthly fees look quite different. Now, the cheapest entry point is $6.99, while the most expensive stands at $22.99.
Now that Netflix's password-sharing crackdown has reached Australia, each Netflix plan can get a little more expensive if you want to add extra members to your account from a different household. Standard subscribers can add one extra member, while Premium users can add two. Either way, it will cost you an extra $7.99 per month for every extra user you add to your account. If you'd rather not pay an extra $7.99 per month, cancelling Netflix couldn't be easier.
Here’s what each Netflix plan will cost you .
Netflix free trial
Netflix used to offer a 30-day free trial to new subscribers, but in March 2020, that trial was scrapped for good. Now, if you want to “try” Netflix, you’ll have to pay at least $6.99 for the privilege.
Free Netflix with Optus plans
You might not be able to get a free trial of Netflix but if you sign up to an NBN or 5G Home Entertainer plan through Optus, you will get Standard Netflix ($16.99) included. Here's a list of popular plans that include free Netflix Standard:
Netflix vs Stan, Binge, Prime Video and more
Netflix app, ui and accessibility.
As one of the first streaming services ever, Netflix pretty much set the bar for every one of its competitors when it came to user experience and accessibility. As such, it’s had plenty of time to refine that bar, and to this date remains perhaps the most user-friendly streaming service around.
Regardless of what platform you’re accessing Netflix through, the user interface is clean, elegant, and responsive. Shows and movies are presented as large thumbnails, and divided into simple categories like “action”, “thriller” and “comedy”. Hover too long over a selection and a trailer will start playing, which isn’t always ideal, but it’s a minor annoyance at worst.
To keep the content glut manageable, only a fraction of the library is displayed on your home screen. Netflix caters this selection to your personal tastes, surfacing content it “thinks” you’ll like and burying stuff you’d likely ignore. The algorithm behind this is solid but occasionally tends to be a little unimaginative (“Because you watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , you might like… Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets !”). The upside to the heavy curation, though, is a manageable UI that doesn’t scroll horizontally until the end of time, *cough* Stan *cough*.
There’s also plenty of accessibility features to ensure that everyone can use Netflix. There are fantastic closed captioning options and support for assisted listening systems for people who are hard of hearing, and screen reader support and optional audio descriptions that describe what’s happening on-screen (like facial expressions and body language) for those who have impaired vision. Netflix Australia content
It’s hard to deny that Netflix is home to some of the best TV shows and best movies on offer. The crown jewel and major point of difference with competing streaming services, however, is its original programming. Think big-budget productions with recognisable-if-not-quite-A-listers-at-their-peak casts, largely shot in gorgeous 4K. These productions have gone a long way to obliterating the stigma that previously surrounded straight-to-home video releases, raking up dozens of awards in the process.
Though Netflix Original feature films can be quite decent ( Marriage Story , The Mitchells vs The Machines and I’m Thinking of Ending Things , to name a few), the TV series are often the best thing you can watch on any screen. Stranger Things , in particular, reached the same cultural saturation point usually reserved for the likes of Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad.
The Witcher , The Crown , Black Mirror , Queer Eye , Making A Murderer , House of Cards , Ozark , Sex Education and Bridgerton all attracted similar levels of hype.
Admirably, Netflix also uses the Originals label to provide a platform for international productions: some of the best content under the moniker is produced outside of Hollywood with Netflix’s guidance (and money). Dark is an enthralling supernatural horror series produced in Germany, while Kingdom , a Korean production, is the best, most original take on the zombie apocalypse in years (think House of Flying Daggers crossed with The Walking Dead ). Australian productions are even starting to appear, notably sci-fi thriller I Am Mother and the crude, hilarious sketch comedy, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun .
Outside of Netflix Originals, content tends towards the slightly older variety, but there are still thousands of quality films and series to absorb. A quick perusal of my auto-generated “blockbuster movies” category yielded bangers like Tenet , The Dark Knight , Step Brothers , The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Blade Runner 2049 and Jurassic Park .
Netflix is decent at securing classic TV shows, too. If you feel like bingeing all of Star Trek: The Next Generation , Schitt’s Creek , How I Met Your Mother or Peaky Blinders , no problem.
Where the service falters is in the recent movies department. If you’re old enough to remember video stores, think of Netflix Australia as your local Video Ezy except you’re confined to the weeklies section. If you’ve missed the cinema run of a big-budget blockbuster, don’t count on it arriving on Netflix Australia anytime soon. If you want to keep up with Hollywood’s latest, you’ll need to pair a Netflix subscription with cinema tickets or the odd Google Play rental.

How much data does Netflix use?
The amount of data used by Netflix depends on the resolution at which you’re watching. Here’s how much data each plan (or more specifically, each streaming resolution) will eat up, and the recommended internet speed.
If you’re a regular Netflix user and finding your stream is constantly buffering, it’s worth taking another look at your NBN plan. We’d recommend going no slower than NBN Basic II speed, which clocks in at up to 25Mbps. However, unless you live alone, we’d suggest opting for an NBN Standard plan which, at speeds of up to 50Mbps, should be more than enough to give everyone in the household a smooth and snappy internet experience.

April 17, 2024
If you live in Australia, you must be convinced that you don’t have access to the best movies on Netflix, or that your region doesn’t have the largest catalog. While the latter may be true in comparison to the U.S. for example, in terms of quality, you actually have access to some amazing movies. A lot awaits to be discovered, and this is what this list is for. agoodmovietowatch suggests highly-rated but little-known movies, in other terms: films you haven’t yet seen which you will love. We pick movies that are at the same time loved by critics and loved by viewers, which narrows down the available selection to a very few limited number – but which will save you time and energy to find what to watch. Below is our list of the best movies on Netflix Australia, but you can visit all our movies here. You can also find all movies available to stream for you by heading to our Netflix page, and picking Australia from the region selector.

Hulu with Live TV Channel List in 2022
1. Wild Tales (2014)
With ‘Wild tales’, writer-director Damían Szifrón explores exactly how thin the proverbial veneer is on the passions of the human heart. Or rather he gleefully rips it off. Visually dazzling and laced with social critique, violent revenge is the theme joining the six vignettes together. Each one starts off in a relatable everyday situation, including an airplane, a wedding, and a coffee shop, which quickly propels into complete savagery of Roald Dahlian proportions.
Like the famous author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Szifrón writes great satirical characters, which he relishes in hurting and throwing in the ditch. And much like the rage of its protagonists, featuring Ricardo Darín as a family man articulating his by way of explosives, this movie does not know peaks and valleys. It’s a dark comedy thrill ride that will have you gasping for air!

2. The Hunt (2013)
It comes as no surprise that former Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen won Best Actor in Cannes for delivering on this challenging role. In this merciless thriller by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, the ice-eyed actor plays Lucas, an out-of-luck high school teacher struggling to start a new life. After a bitter divorce, he returns to the close-knit community he grew up in to work as a kindergarten teacher.
A few weeks before Christmas, a child from his class, who has an innocent crush on the popular teacher, hints to a colleague that he had exposed himself to her. The young girl’s intimation galvanizes the small hunter’s town into a witch-hunt that leaves Lucas’ life hanging from a string. Trapped in the lies, the more he fights back, the more irrational the mob becomes. In all its brutal honesty, The Hunt is one of those rare thrillers that will haunt you for days. Extraordinary and thought-provoking!
3. Love and Mercy (2014)
If you’re a fan of the Beach Boys’ legacy, or you want to find out more about Wilson, the person, this movie will give you what you need. It has been widely praised as being true to the facts – even by Bryan Wilson himself. But thanks, in part, to the incredible writing by Oscar-nominated Oren Moverman and the work of director Bill Pohlad, this is much more than a fact-based fictionalization of a famous musician’s biography. It is a singularly convincing account of the artistic process and the effects of mental illness.
Love and Mercy tells the tale of two Bryan Wilsons: the first of a young and slightly square-looking musical pioneer in the 1960s, when Wilson was working on Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys’ most ambitious and ground-breaking album. Paul Dano’s performance here is nothing short of perfect. And, second, the tale of the tormented, middle-aged Bryan Wilson, played by John Cusack, during a time when he was under treatment for his deteriorating mental health in the late 1980s. The juxtaposition of these two very different people and the brilliant performances of Cusack and Dano will completely absorb you and change the way you look at things. A unique and beautiful film!
4. Captain Fantastic (2016)
Former activists Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife Leslie drop out from modern consumerist society to raise their six children in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. They teach them how to raise and kill their own food, to survive in nature through boot-camp-like workouts, and homeschool them in literature, music, and left-wing philosophy. Instead of Christmas, they celebrate Noam Chomsky’s birthday. Then, one day, this unusual family life is shaken by a phone call and they are forced to leave their life of adventure to reintegrate into American life.
Directed by Matt Ross, who also brought you Good Night, and Good Luck, the film offers a poignant look at alternative living, the effects of modern technology, and the nature of good parenting. Viggo Mortensen is indeed fantastic as the grizzled father and was rightly nominated for a Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actor. George MacKay and the entire cast of “children” also deliver terrific performances. As emotionally raw and thought-provoking as it is funny, Captain Fantastic will have the viewer decide if Ben Cash is the best father in the world or the worst.
5. Icarus (2017)
Director Bryan Fogel, who you might know as the guy behind Jewtopia, initially set out to chronicle his exploration of doping to win an amateur cycling race. He starts off by reaching out to experts to help him with obtaining and administering said drugs, one of which points him towards Russian scientist Grigory Rodchenkov, the director of Russia’s national anti-doping laboratory. Rodchenkov eagerly agrees to help him out.
Little did he know that his Russian acquaintance would transform Fogel film from a self-experiment documentary into a true-crime political thriller, when the scientist admits to being involved in a state-sponsored doping scheme of epic proportions on camera. Putin is obviously not amused.
Aside from all the madness that unfolds in this Netflix production, it’s Rodchenkov’s likeable and eccentric personality that makes the story more relatable and human as well as giving you a rare glimpse into the upper echelons of a country like Russia. As the plot thickens, one can’t help but think that Fogel too is in over his head. Rightly award-winning, this is gripping stuff even if you’re not into sports!
6. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013)
Based on a classic Japanese folktale, Isao Takahata’s last film will break your heart. This adaptation, of course, follows Princess Kaguya from her being discovered in a glowing bamboo stalk to her departure to the moon. However, while faithful to the original tale, Takahata’s direction turns this historical fantasy into a heart-wrenching coming-of-age film as ethereal as the titular character. The film doesn’t focus on the crazy pursuit of her suitors; instead, we’re drawn to the simple experiences Kaguya herself is drawn to and wants more of, as she tries to balance her life with the societal expectations places on women. All of which is rendered through the film’s lush watercolored scenes of the blowing wind or the opening of plum blossoms.

7. Hell or High Water (2016)
Written by actor-turned-screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) and directed by David Mackenzie (who is responsible for the prison drama Starred up), this well-acted Western is one of the most captivating movies of 2016. Chris Pine and Ben Foster play two brothers, one cautious and out to better himself, the other, an ex-convict with an itchy trigger finger, whose family ranch is threatened by the local bank. Both set out to make a high-risk living of travelling and robbing that bank’s local branches. On the other side of town, grizzled Texas ranger Marcus, played by none other than Academy Award-winner Jeff Bridges, has one foot in retirement but is bent on solving their case. The film’s spectacular cinematography is reinforced by the brooding original music, composed by none other than Nick Cave and long-time collaborator Warren Ellis. It takes you on a journey that is as much about the two brothers’ violent upbringing as it is about the decaying towns they visit, making this modern-day crime western not only a great thriller but a tribute to the Texan way of life.
8. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (2017)
After his first serious role in The Truman Show in 1998, Jim Carrey got a shot at playing his idol, the late comedian and performance artist Andy Kaufmann, in Man on the Moon in 1999. When he got the role, a role of a lifetime, Carrey decided to honor Kaufmann’s legacy by transforming into him (and his alter ego Tony Clifton) and, in true method-acting fashion, never to leave character. Jim & Andy is the result of 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage shot at the Man on the Moon set, which was withheld for 20 years over fears of Universal Studios that people would think Carrey was an a**hole. While Carrey was a complete and utter imposition to the film’s director, Miloš Forman, and everybody else on set, including Danny DeVito, his transformation (or obsession) was a unique, transformative experience for Carrey, who had been sick of fame and acting before he took on this gig. Whether you buy into this view or see it as a vanity piece of a complete maniac, this is one of the most unique and insane documentaries on Netflix. A mind-blowing portrayal of a complex mind.
9. Blue Jay (2016)
Being an intimate, black-and-white portrayal of just two people, it is worth mentioning the two leads in the very first sentence: Blue Jay stars the incredibly versatile Sarah Paulson, who most of you will know from her depiction of Marcia Clark in The People vs. O.J., and Mark Duplass from Creep. In this incredibly intricate dialogue-driven drama, he is of course named Jim, a regular guy with some issues, who runs into his high-school sweetheart Amanda at the grocery store. She is only in town briefly because her sister is having a baby. Amanda agrees to have coffee with him, later they get beer and jellybeans, and find themselves recreating silly tapes at his late mother’s house that they use to make when they were still at school. This could quickly become a soppy affair if it wasn’t for the heart-felt realness of the acting, for lack of a better term, and all the fine details that the two leads bring to the screen. The chemistry between them is something to behold!
10. God’s Own Country (2017)
You might call Francis Lee’s spellbinding debut a Call me By Your Name without the privilege and pretentiousness, and we think it’s a better movie because of it. God’s Own Country tells the story of Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor), a farmer’s son who is trapped working on the family farm, who dulls his frustration and misery with binging at the pub and aggressive sex with strange men—his true desire is not so much repressed by society’s rampant homophobia here, but by his family’s emotional callousness. When his strict and icy father suffers a stroke, things get worse for him still. Then, during lambing season, help arrives in the shape of watchful, radiant, and strikingly handsome Romanian seasonal worker, Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), whose warmth of character and professional competence feels threatening to Johnny at first. But when they withdraw to the hills to repair a stone wall, Johnny’s aggression gives way to passion as Gheorghe helps him to feel, to love, and to see beauty in the country around him. God’s own country. A beautiful, stirring, and passionate debut!

Netflix Doesn’t Want to Talk About Subscriber Numbers
Subscriber membership numbers, which is considered a key metric on the success of a streaming service will not be reported on by Netflix starting next year, the company said in its letter to shareholders published on Thursday. Instead, Netflix will focus on engagement saying that the time customers spend on the service is a better indicator of their satisfaction.
This change is surprising as Netflix appeared to start becoming more transparent with its stats. Just last December, Netflix released its first “What We Watched” report that lays out what shows subscribers are watching. Streaming services have been secretive about these viewer number stats, but the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of last year sought to make these numbers available as part of their negotiations for compensation.
It’s also perplexing that Netflix doesn’t want to announce its subscriber growth because Thursday’s earnings report showed the service added 9.33 million subs for the first fiscal quarter of 2024. This brings Netflix’s global subscriber count to approximately 270 million.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders New Netflix Series Details: 'Open Access' Says Charlotte Jones
The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' new TV show will premiere on Netflix this summer. Charlotte Jones says the open access will captivate viewers.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' new show will premiere on Netflix this summer.
'America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' is a seven-episode series from Emmy Award-winning director Greg Whiteley and the team who produced Cheer and Last Chance U.
This series follows the 2023-24 DCC squad in its entirety. The show kicks off at auditions with who makes the team, continues into training camp and then all the way through the NFL season . The show promises to tell the personal stories behind the uniforms – revealing the drive, hustle, and drama among the cheerleaders and coaches.
“We’re thrilled to see the results of a season spent with Greg Whiteley and a remarkable crew following every step of the way. The storytelling through this open access will captivate viewers episode after episode and Netflix’s global stage is the perfect platform to showcase it,” said Charlotte Jones, Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President/Chief Brand Officer and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders President.

“We went into this understanding that the opportunity to transparently share the journey of our season, and the emotions, challenges and joy experienced along the way, is exactly what our fans and viewers would want. It’s also part of the reason that, for decades, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have earned their place as being ‘often imitated, but never equaled’.”
Along with Jones, DCC Director Kelli Finglass has been instrumental in DCC's global popularity. Finglass wore the iconic uniform for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders from 1984 to 1989 .
The success of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is undeniable. "America's Sweethearts" are an international brand, so much so that the star-spangled uniform hangs in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. After 16 seasons, “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team,” was CMT's most-popular and longest-running TV show.
The team has also been featured in two made-for-television movies and has a widespread presence in branded merchandise including a collector’s edition Barbie, posters, and calendars.
Most recently, the Cowboys Cheerleaders teamed up with the USO to bring joy to service members , visiting four military bases across South Korea in late February : Camp Walker, Camp Humphreys, Camp Casey and Camp Bonifas.

Netflix price in Australia 2024: How much you pay and what you get
Here's how much Netflix will cost you in Australia
Netflix's pricing has jumped quite significantly since its arrival Down Under back in 2015, with the streaming giant having implemented multiple price hikes in the years since.
At launch, Netflix's Aussie streaming tiers were quite reasonably priced, starting at just AU$8.99 per month for a single SD stream, before moving up to AU$11.99 per month for two HD streams and AU$14.99 per month for four 4K streams.
Of course, the growing number of expensive Netflix Original TV shows and movies has led the streaming giant to pass the buck onto subscribers — that means higher subscription prices across the board, particularly for customers on the two top tiers.
We suppose that's a small price to pay to remain signed up to one of the best streaming services in Australia , though it might be a little harder to swallow for users subscribed to multiple services.
And while some users have made the most of their monthly payment by sharing their account across multiple households, it now appears that Netflix is testing a new pricing option that would add a small additional fee for people outside of your home, though we don't know if or when that system will be available locally.
That said, the news that Netflix's cheaper ad-supported tier will be available to Australian subscribers from November 4 should help alleviate those pricing woes. So without further delay, here's a complete rundown of Netflix's pricing in Australia for 2022.
Netflix prices (per month)
Netflix price tiers: what you get.
As we mentioned earlier, Australians will soon be able to sign up to Netflix's new 'Basic with ads' tier from November 4, 2022. The new tier will come in at the reasonably affordable price of AU$6.99 per month, which is AU$4 cheaper than its ad-free Basic tier, which now costs AU$10.99 per month.

That puts Netflix's ad-supported, single stream tier at the exact same price point as Amazon Prime Video's one and only streaming plan, which offers three concurrent streams at resolutions up to 4K with HDR thrown in for good measure.
Both of Netflix's Basic tiers are limited to 720p (HD) quality, which is admittedly a long-overdue upgrade over the previous entry-level resolution of 480p (SD).
It's also worth noting that Amazon's service is generally ad-free, outside of some pre-roll trailers for other exclusive Prime shows.
Next up is Netflix's popular Standard plan, which offers two concurrent 1080p (Full HD) streams for AU$16.99 per month. It's likely that Netflix's Standard tier will be enough for most households.
Having said that, videophiles and those with families of three or more people will probably want to upgrade to Netflix's Premium tier, which is priced at a hefty AU$22.99 per month. For that money, you get four simultaneous streams at resolutions up to 4K, along with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Netflix price outlook
Given that Netflix has been forced to launch a cheaper, ad-supported tier of its service to combat its immense subscriber loss during the start of 2022, we think the streaming giant will likely hold off on further price hikes for the foreseeable future.
That said, nothing would surprise us at this point — Netflix may eventually use the new ad-supported tier to justify charging more for its higher tiers, though hopefully not. Either way, we wouldn't expect a Netflix pricing increase until at least the middle of 2023.

Netflix movie of the day: King Richard is a light, engrossing drama with ace acting
A great cast serving perfect performances
If you want to watch something feel-good on Netflix this weekend, this movie about Venus and Serena Williams starting their professional tennis careers – and the work from their dad, Richard, that went into making the break-out possible – is an engrossing story of one family against the world.
The movie has some fantastic performances, including – but not limited to – an Oscar-winning turn from Will Smith that everyone definitely remembers instead of that other thing he did that night...
- Watch King Richard on Netflix now
Exactly how true to life this movie is remains up in the air – while the Williams family had involvement in the film, there are suggestions that it sugarcoats things in places – but it's still a really compelling watch, and certainly does try to view Richard Williams from more than one angle.
He infuriates their coaches, he infuriates his wife, he infuriates his daughters when he doesn't bend his 'plans' for them to accommodate their growing independence… but this is how he gets positive results. That tension runs through so much of the movie – should he change as time goes on? Will he change? Can he change?
Despite the name, the movie is quietly Venus and Serena's story, though more Venus. Saniyya Sidney (Venus) and Demi Singleton (Serena) are both superb, and hold their own not only against Will Smith doing a whole physical change in his performance, but also against Jon Bernthal (coach Rick Macci) and Aunjanue Ellis (Oracene Price, Richard's partner) who are both trying to steal the movie in their own ways. Actually, in the same way, really – both are so good at playing that they're dealing with the most aggravating man in the world, whom they have deep affection for fundamentally.
And you know it's going to have an uplifting ending, because Venus and Serena did not exactly struggle in their careers. Put it on for a fun Friday night light drama, it's a good time.

Stabbing that injured bishop at Sydney church being treated as terrorism
The stabbing of a bishop by a 16-year-old boy during a livestreamed service Monday in Sydney is being treated as an act of terrorism, authorities said.
Police arrested the boy Tuesday after the attack at Christ the Good Shepherd Church. Authorities had said the boy was 15. New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the suspect’s comments pointed to a religious motive for the attack.
Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was stabbed during a livestreamed sermon, and another priest was injured. Both are expected to survive.
The New South Wales Police Force said earlier in an update on X that it responded to a call from a church in Wakekly, a suburb west of Sydney, at 7:10 p.m. local time (5:39 a.m. ET) Monday, where there were reports that "a number of people were stabbed."
Hundreds of angry people rushed to the scene, and some clashed with riot police, with vehicles damaged. The church and local leaders pleaded for calm.
Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Andrew Holland commended the congregation for subduing the teen before calling police. Asked whether the teen’s fingers had been severed, he said the hand injuries were “severe.”
More than 100 police reinforcements arrived before the teen was taken from the church in the hourslong incident. Several police vehicles were damaged, Holland said.
“A number of houses have been damaged. They’ve broken into a number of houses to gain weapons to throw at the police. They’ve thrown weapons and items at the church itself. There were obviously people who wanted to get access to the young person who caused the injuries to the clergy people,” he said.
Emmanuel and priest Isaac Royel, as well as the teen and at least two police officers, were hospitalized, Holland told journalists.
A video shared widely on social media appears to show a priest being stabbed repeatedly, while delivering a sermon, by a man in a black T-shirt who is then tackled by members of the congregation. The church routinely livestreams its services and events.
Holland commended the congregation for subduing the teen before calling police. When asked if the teen’s fingers had been severed, he said the hand injuries were “severe.”
A subsequent video taken by a churchgoer showed people helping the bishop as he lay on the floor.
Police said the incident took place on Welcome Street, where Christ the Good Shepherd Church, which follows Assyrian Orthodox Christianity, is located. The church advertised an "Assyrian Bible Preaching" event Monday night with Emmanuel .
The church said the bishop and a senior priest were in stable condition at a hospital and asked for people’s prayers. “It is the bishop’s and father’s wishes that you also pray for the perpetrator,” the church said in a statement on social media “We also kindly ask anyone at the church premises to leave in peace.”
The NSW Ambulance service said that it treated a man in his 50s for multiple cuts and that three other people were treated for one or more cuts.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, police said, and the victims were being treated by paramedics. A male was arrested and was “assisting police with inquiries,” the New South Wales police statement noted earlier.
The premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, described the scenes as “disturbing” on social media and urged the community to remain calm and “stick together.” Religious leaders expressed shock and condolences.
Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone, leader of the neighboring municipal government, described the bishop as a community leader. “This is a very emotional situation. Obviously the community is very upset,” Carbone told Sky News.
It comes after Saturday's attack at the Westfield Bondi shopping mall in Sydney, which killed six people and injured nine.
Police said earlier Monday that they were examining why the lone assailant in that attack had targeted women while avoiding men, and the killer’s father blamed his son’s frustration at not having a girlfriend.
