Hisako Ueno reported from Okayama, Japan.

Tropical storm Shanshan was drenching southern Japan with record rainfall early Friday, a day after making landfall as a typhoon and flooding towns, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes, disrupting travel and forcing more than four million evacuations.

The storm, the strongest to hit Japan this year, had maximum sustained winds of up to 46 miles per hour and gusts of 51 m.p.h. early on Friday, according to the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center , which downgraded Shanshan from a typhoon to a tropical storm Thursday evening.

Shanshan had peaked at a strength equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall as a typhoon around 8 a.m. Thursday on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s main islands, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It was forecast to move north through Kyushu before shifting east on Friday and Saturday, moving further inland and losing strength.

The storm was weakening as it moved slowly inland, but the authorities issued warnings for landslides and floods in many parts of southwestern Japan. More than 4.1 million people were under evacuation orders nationwide on Thursday, Japan’s Cabinet Office said.

“This is one of the biggest typhoons in recent years, for a prefecture that experiences many typhoons every year,” Kensei Tomisako, a disaster response official in Satsumasendai, said in an interview.

Shanshan has brought record rainfall. Some parts of Kyushu recorded 2.6 feet of rain in 48 hours, forecasters said. The storm, inching north at less than 4 m.p.h. early on Friday, lashed some areas with rain for hours.

Three people died after a landslide on Tuesday buried their home in Gamagori, a city in central Japan that was hit by heavy rain, the local government said early Thursday. Another person died after a roof collapsed in Kamiita Town, according to Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK .

More than 80 people were injured in the storm, and one person was missing, the news agency said. More than 107,000 households were without power early Friday in Kyushu, the service provider Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution said.

Japan Airlines , one of the country’s largest airlines, canceled all flights to and from Nagasaki and seven other cities in Shanshan’s path on Thursday and said that many flights to and from 20 cities across the country on Friday had already been canceled. All Nippon Airways also canceled all flights that had been scheduled at Kansai International Airport for Friday.

Shinkansen bullet-train service was suspended on Thursday for all of Kyushu , along with service between Tokyo and Osaka, because of heavy rain. Many of the train lines linking major cities in western Japan , including Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima, were also suspended.

On Wednesday, the authorities issued rare emergency warnings for the storm in Kagoshima Prefecture, indicating that a large-scale disaster was possible, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The warnings were downgraded on Thursday morning.

Toyota announced that it would pause production at all 14 of its Japan factories starting Wednesday evening. On Thursday morning, the carmaker said that it would extend the suspension until Friday for all but one of the factories.

How to use JR Rail Pass Calculator - Save money on your trip

NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR

JR Rail Pass Calculator - Save money on your trip

After buying plane tickets, the JR Rail Pass is the next thing travellers search for in preparation for their trip to Japan. But do you really need to get one and how much will you save? If you already have a basic idea of the major centers you will travel to while in Japan, it’s pretty easy to calculate. Let's actually calculate

The JR Rail Pass - An Introduction

JR Shinkansen

JR Shinkansen

The JR Rail Pass, also known as the Japan Rail Pass, lets you travel on basically any JR line train for a certain period of time. When you are buying the rail pass, it comes with a few different options: • It is available in two types; the Ordinary Pass is for regular reserved or unreserved seating, and the Green pass is for business-class style seating and service in the Green Car. • You can choose from three time periods; 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. The pass is valid for that period of time from the day that it is first used. • There is a children's ticket available for children aged 6 to 11 years old.

JR Rail Pass prices -

JR trains

A 7-day Ordinary Pass will cost 50,000 yen for adults and 25,000 yen for children. A 7-day Green Car Pass will cost 70,000 yen for adults and 35,000 yen for children. A 14-day Ordinary Pass will cost 80,000 yen for adults and 40,000 yen for children. A 14-day Green Car Pass will cost 110,000 yen for adults and 55,000 yen for children. A 21-day Ordinary Pass will cost 100,000 yen for adults and 50,000 yen for children. A 21-day Green Car Pass will cost 140,000 yen for adults and 70,000 yen for children.

Shinkansen ticket prices

JR Shinkansen

The way shinkansen tickets are priced can be a little confusing, as the price is often shown (on Japanese websites as well as on the ticket itself) as being broken up into two separate components. The first is the base price to travel from station A to station B on any train, and the second is the price to travel on the shinkansen specifically. For example, to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto the base price is 8,360 yen. As you may know if you have read our ultimate guide to riding the shinkansen , there are three different types of seats you can book: a non-reserved Seat will be the cheapest at 4,960 yen, a reserved seat will guarantee you a place to sit for 5,610 yen, and a Green Car seat will have you relaxing in comfort at 10,480 yen. Combine these two prices and you have the total cost of the shinkansen ticket; 13,320 yen for a non-reserved seat, 13,970 yen for a reserved seat, and 18,840 yen for a Green Car seat.

Train ticket prices (one-way) for popular routes -

How to calculate how much you will save

japan train travel calculator

Most route finder sites and apps aren’t able to accurately represent the amount you would save by using a JR Rail Pass because they often choose routes or trains that can be faster or cheaper but not valid; usually because they are run by other train companies. This can create a situation where a train trip that you thought would be covered by the JR Rail Pass becomes an extra expense once you are here. By using the Japan Travel by NAVITIME Train & Route Finder , and selecting ‘Japan Rail Pass’ in the ‘Several Pass / Tickets selected’ menu, you can search exclusively for routes that are free to use for JR Rail Pass holders. By adding up the trips to the destinations you will travel to while in Japan, you can see how much you will save by picking up a rail pass. You can also get the same search results in the Japan Travel by NAVITIME app for iOS and Android . When you're ready to get your Japan Rail Pass, you can purchase online from here.

japan train travel calculator

If you’re not planning on getting a JR Rail Pass — maybe because you will stay in Tokyo or Osaka while you are here — the Japan Travel by NAVITIME Train & Route Finder can also be helpful, as you can also get routes based on the Tokyo Metro ‘Tokyo Subway Ticket’ and Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau’s ‘Osaka Amazing Pass’. ***All prices in this article are correct as of April 2024***

Japan Rail Pass Calculator

Is the japan rail pass worth it.

This is one of the most asked questions when preparing for a trip to Japan, and although the JR Pass can save you a lot of money, sometimes it isn’t worth it. This is why I decided to create this tool, so you can check easily if you should buy the pass for your trip or not. It compares the price of regular tickets (mostly Shinkansen tickets) with the price of the JR Pass.

How to use the JR Pass Calculator?

  • Select your departure city
  • Select your destination city
  • Check the round-trip box if you’re doing a round-trip
  • Hit the ADD ROUTE button to add the selected route to your itinerary

Did you make a mistake? No problem, you can delete a route by hitting the DELETE button at the end of the row. Each route you add or remove will change the total price, so you can see in real-time if the JR Pass is worth it. For now, this tool only includes the fastest routes where the JR Pass is available. The price of the seat reservation is also included in each route price.

This tool is still being upgraded and doesn’t have yet all the stations available. Therefore, there are some things you should be aware of when using this tool:

  • You won’t see cheaper options, like buses, for example. For now, only Shinkansen and limited express routes are available.
  • Ticket prices aren’t updated daily, so there might be a small difference between the actual price and the one provided in the tool (until our next update)
  • Only major stations are included in the tool for the moment (other stations will be included progressively).

If you want to give your feedback about this tool, please use this form .

This tool is meant to help you have an idea if a Japan Rail Pass is worth it for your itinerary or not. Individual ticket costs may not be 100% accurate, even if we try to keep them updated regularly, and they also might vary according to the season.

Please notice that the tool only compares the fastest transportation types, where you can use the Japan Rail Pass. Other options that might be cheaper, like night buses or local trains, for instance, are not analyzed with this tool.

This is an independent tool provided “as is”. We recommend using Japan Travel by Navitime to check each individual ticket price and every route available.

Japan Rail Pass price

How much is a JR Pass? Check the prices for adults and children, for 7, 14 or 21 days, and for a Standard or Green Pass.

Select the class you wish to travel in, the number of accompanying children (if applicable) and enter the duration of your stay. It's that simple, so order your Japan Rail Pass today and get packing!

Children discounts applies to children between 6 and 11 years of age. Children under 6 years ride free but without seat resevation.

Note on prices: Please note that the sales prices may undergo slight changes, depending on the changes in the currency exchange rates, which are beyond our control.

The easiest way to travel in Japan

The JR Pass makes traveling around Japan easy. This multi-use ticket grants unlimited access to all JR network public transport, including Shinkansen high-speed trains, buses, ferries and airport transport, for an affordable price.

Thanks to this one-way ticket, you won't have to buy a new ticket every time you use public transport during your stay, which represents undeniable convenience and time-saving.

A 7-day JR Pass can allow you to travel to the most popular Japanese destinations (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) and use local transport for less than buying each ticket separately. If you're planning several long-distance journeys, the JR Pass will save you money.

JR Pass holders will also be able to enjoy discounts at some of Japan's popular tourist attractions from October 2023.

Validity of the JR Pass

Remember that your pass is valid for either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. Once activated, the dates cannot be changed, which means you should always coordinate your vacation plans with the validity of the pass.

Children's discount

If kids are among your travel companions on your trip to Japan, you will be glad to know a JR children's discount is an option. Check to see if any of these apply in your case.

Children between zero and 5 years of age can use all the JR transport system without having to purchase a Japan Rail Pass. The only caveat is that they are not allowed to occupy a seat and have to stay on an adult's lap unless there are empty seats available in the green, unreserved and reserved cars. Of course, there are no seat limitations if a pass is bought for them.

There is a child's pass available for children aged from 6 to 11 years that costs half the price of an adult pass.

GUIDE Japan Rail Pass The JR Pass, a convenient and affordable way to travel Japan by train

  • Stories & Guides
  • Japan Rail Pass

Make the most of your trip to Japan with a JR Pass

The Japan Rail (JR) Pass is a deal offered exclusively to foreign visitors traveling in Japan under temporary visitor status. It allows you to pretty much take unlimited rides on the JR network throughout Japan. Since the JR Pass was first created, the shinkansen (bullet train) network has greatly expanded, and now it's possible to ride the shinkansen all the way from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

From October 1st, 2023, a regular seven-day adult pass costs 50,000 yen, while those looking for a little more luxury can buy a Green Car (first class) pass from 70,000 yen. The 14-day regular adult pass is 80,000 yen, while the regular 21-day pass costs 100,000 yen.

Kids' passes are reduced by 50 percent for children aged between 6 and 11.

japan train travel calculator

The shinkansen is one of the fastest, most convenient ways to get around Japan

What is covered?

Outside urban centers such as Tokyo and Osaka, the pass is best used to cover distance, as it does not include municipal subways and private suburban lines. With thousands of kilometers of track, the JR network connects you to attractions across Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, the four main islands of Japan.

The pass allows you to ride many local buses operated by JR as well, including the tourist loop bus in Hiroshima, JR Hokkaido buses around Sapporo, and the local bus to Kusatsu Onsen. You can even ride the JR West Miyajima ferry, which operates from Miyajimaguchi, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima and Miyajima.

NOTICE: Miyajima Visitor Tax

  • From October 2023, visitors to Miyajima will be required to pay the Miyajima Visitor Tax. Please show your JR Pass at the service window of the JR West Miyajima Ferry and then pay the Miyajima Visitor Tax separately. https://another1000years-miyajima.jp/en/visitortax/index.html

The Japan Rail Pass makes plenty of famous attractions accessible, allows for easy and convenient travel across the country, and can save you money on your travels. Aside from discounted travel, some tourist facilities also offer special discounts or other benefits when you show your JR Pass.

japan train travel calculator

What isn't covered?

There are some important exceptions you should know before deciding to buy a pass or not. For instance, the JR pass does not include rides on the Nozomi (the fastest service on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen route) or Mizuho trains (fastest on the Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen route). If you're traveling on these lines, be careful which trains you board, as passengers who ride the Nozomi and Mizuho with a JR Pass will have to buy an additional ticket before boarding. However, purchasing these additional tickets includes added benefits, like being able to ride from Tokyo to Hiroshima without changing trains, for example.

In cities like Tokyo, the pass doesn't give you access to the subway and metro lines, so you might find it a little inconvenient if you will spend most of your time in one major urban area. Many of the major attractions have JR stations nearby, but if you find a quicker or more convenient route on the subway, you will have to pay extra. Using a pre-paid IC travel card, though, is a convenient way to make use of both private railways and JR lines. However, some suburban "liner" express trains on the JR network, aren't included either, and passengers need a special separate ticket to board them.

japan train travel calculator

It's also important to note that Japanese railroad networks can be extremely complex, so sometimes JR trains will also use private railway tracks. In these cases (as well as those involving JR express buses), additional fees may apply.

How do I get a JR Pass?

japan train travel calculator

How do I use it?

When you arrive to Japan, you can pick up your pass or exchange your voucher at a designated pickup location. Make sure to have your passport, temporary visitor stamp or sticker and your exchange order or reservation number ready before you arrive at the counter to ensure a smooth exchange. Once you receive your JR Pass, you can start using the trains. The JR Pass itself is your ticket, and you can sit in any of the available seats of the non-reserved seat cars except when you reserve a seat, in which case you are issued a seat ticket.

You can make reservations on most shinkansen and other long-distance travel (like limited express trains) for no extra cost with your JR Pass. Making seat reservations is a good idea, especially if you're traveling during peak times and seasons, or riding the first or last trains of the day.

Some trains, including the fastest shinkansen like the Hayabusa (Tohoku Shinkansen), and Kagayaki (Hokuriku Shinkansen), certain limited express trains and some popular sightseeing trains don't offer non-reserved seats, so seat reservations are mandatory. Seat selection is generally not available on local and urban trains, but some quick web research will help you to confirm.

JR Pass holders can now use the automatic gates at stations when available, and if you have additional tickets you can stack them and feed them into the machine at once.

Travel tip: if traveling in the direction of Kyoto and Osaka from Tokyo on the shinkansen, reserve a window seat on the right for a view of Mt. Fuji.

japan train travel calculator

So, should I buy it?

If you're hoping to cover a lot of ground, want to use the shinkansen for day trips, or even if you'd prefer to avoid air travel, toll roads, highways, and long-distance buses, the JR Pass might be a good investment. However, if you choose to spend most of your time exploring Tokyo or Osaka, it may be wise to look into subway passes, or area rail passes.

The potential disadvantage to owning a JR Pass might be trying to squeeze too much into your itinerary to maximize your discount or, the opposite: buying a pass and not using it to its full potential. Both of these scenarios can be avoided with a little planning.

Even rural spots are within reach

JR Pass alternatives

Regional JR passes offer unlimited rides in specific areas. If you plan to travel extensively through Western Japan (Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.), consider JR-West Rail Passes. If you'd like to focus your travel on the eastern parts (Tokyo, Nagano, Niigata, and Tohoku), look into the JR East Pass.

Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass)

The Japan Rail Pass (also commonly called JR Pass) is a nationwide rail pass for long-distance train travel in Japan.

The pass can be used only by foreign tourists and offers unlimited rides on JR trains for one, two or three weeks. It comes in two types: ordinary and green car. The latter is valid on green cars (first class cars), which offer more spacious seats than ordinary cars.

The pass lost a lot of its appeal due to a massive price increase in autumn 2023, but it remains a worthwhile product especially to those who do not mind paying extra for the convenient all-you-can-ride privilege, which frees one from having to buy individual tickets for each ride.

The Japan Rail Pass is not valid or requires a supplement fee in the following cases:

  • Non-JR trains JR operates the large majority of train lines in Japan, including all shinkansen lines; however, there are also numerous other railway operators. Most of them serve relatively small regional networks or even just single lines, and they are most prominent in the suburbs of Japan's largest cities. Furthermore, most subway lines in Japan are not operated by JR. The Japan Rail Pass is generally not valid on non-JR trains.
  • Tokyo - Nagoya: 4,180 yen
  • Tokyo - Kyoto: 4,960 yen
  • Tokyo - Shin-Osaka: 4,960 yen
  • Tokyo - Hiroshima: 6,500 yen
  • Tokyo - Hakata: 8,140 yen
  • Shin-Osaka - Hiroshima: 4,170 yen
  • Shin-Osaka - Hakata: 4,960 yen
  • Shin-Osaka - Kagoshima-Chuo: 9,460 yen
  • Hakata - Kagoshima-Chuo: 4,500 yen

In order to ride Nozomi and Mizuho trains, pass holders will have to pay the supplement fee in the form of a "Nozomi Mizuho Ticket", which can be purchased at ticket offices at major JR stations across Japan.

  • JR trains using non-JR tracks There are about a dozen JR trains that partially run on tracks owned by different railway companies. Japan Rail Pass holders will have to pay the fare for these non-JR sections. Please see our special page on JR trains using non-JR tracks for a list of these trains.
  • Special compartments and berths Special compartments, such as berths on night trains, are not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass. A supplement fee has to be paid. See our night train page for more details.
  • Trains requiring liner tickets There exist a few suburban "home liner" trains, which require a special "liner ticket" and are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. However, since these trains are targeted at suburban commuters, foreign tourists are unlikely to use them. Confusingly, there are also a few trains that contain "Liner" in their names, but do not require a liner ticket, such as the Marine Liner and Seaside Liner. These trains are fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
  • Highway buses The pass is not valid on any highway buses . It used to be valid on a small number of JR highway buses before spring 2013.

The Japan Rail Pass includes the following additional features:

  • Free seat reservations Pass holders can make seat reservations for JR trains for free.
  • Discounts for selected tourist sites and services Pass holders are able to profit from discounts or gifts at selected sightseeing spots and shops. The discounts are typically 10% or 100 yen and gifts are typically a free postcard. See a list of discounts at the official website .

Green vs. ordinary

Green cars offer larger seats, more foot space and enhanced board service, and they tend to be less crowded than ordinary cars. They are available on most shinkansen and limited express trains and on a small number of local trains. Many travelers find the size and foot room of ordinary seats sufficient, but those looking for additional luxury, should go for the green car.

Upgrading to Green Car possible?

It is possible, but the ordinary rail pass will cover only the base fare . The green car fee and possible shinkansen or limited express supplement fees will have to be paid separately, which usually adds up to a rather large amount.

japan train travel calculator

Can the pass be shared or transferred?

No, the Japan Rail Pass is a strictly personal pass and can be used only by the person whose name is printed on the pass. Pass holders may be asked by railway staff to produce their passports in order to confirm ownership of the pass.

Validity: calendar days or 24-hour periods?

The validity period of the Japan Rail Pass is based on calendar days (midnight to midnight) rather than 24-hour periods. For example: when starting to use a 7-day pass at noon on day 1, it will expire at midnight at the end of day 7 rather than at noon of day 8.

What happens if I am on a train when the pass expires at midnight?

If you happen to be on board of a train at midnight, the pass remains valid until the end of your journey, i.e. until you leave your final station through the ticket gates. This is true even if you transfer trains after midnight. However, if you transfer to a shinkansen or limited express train after midnight, the pass will not cover the express supplement for that train anymore.

Purchase and exchange

There are two ways to purchase a Japan Rail Pass:

  • Through the official website If you purchase the Japan Rail Pass through the official website , a start date within a one-month period is set at the time of purchase (can be modified later). The big advantage of purchasing the pass through the official website is that you can use a designated website for making online seat reservations even before arriving in Japan. Furthermore, you will need only your passport (and no voucher) to pick up your pass in Japan.
  • Through online and offline travel agents Many travel agents - online and offline - are authorized to sell the Japan Rail Pass, including Japan Experience . If you purchase your pass through one of them, you will first receive a voucher, which needs to be exchanged to the actual pass inside Japan within three months of purchase. When exchanging the voucher to the actual pass, you set the start date to a date of you choice within a one-month period. An advantage of purchasing the pass through travel agents is that some allow you to purchase the pass in combination with other travel products and earn points and/or discounts.

The sale of the pass at train stations inside of Japan was discontinued in September 2023.

Who can use it?

The Japan Rail Pass can be used only by short term visitors to Japan ("temporary visitors"). It can also be used by Japanese nationals who can prove that they have been permanently residing abroad for at least the past ten years. But it cannot be used by residents of Japan.

Where and how can the voucher be exchanged?

The voucher can be exchanged at designated major JR stations across Japan, including the JR stations at Narita Airport and Kansai Airport . See this page for a list of designated stations and opening hours. Hand your voucher and passport (photocopy not accepted) to the ticket counter staff. After some processing, you will receive your Japan Rail Pass.

Selecting a starting date in the future

When you exchange your voucher to the actual pass, you do not need to start using the pass from the same date. You can select any date within a one-month period as your starting date. However, once the actual pass is issued, the starting date cannot be changed anymore. Those who purchase their pass through the official website select a starting date of their pass at the time of purchase, but can modify it afterwards if needed.

How to use the Japan Rail Pass

See our separate pages about the basics on how to use trains and shinkansen in Japan. Generally, the Japan Rail Pass is your ticket. No other ticket is needed except when using a reserved seat, in which case you will need to get a seat reservation ticket. Seat reservations are free with the Japan Rail Pass.

Rail pass holders can use automatic ticket gates

As of June 2020, pass holders can use the automatic ticket gates to enter railway stations. Previously they had to pass through the manned gate and present their rail pass to the staff.

How to make seat reservations

Japan Rail Pass holders can make seat reservations for free at ticket machines or ticket offices across Japan after exchanging their voucher to the actual pass. Reservations cannot be made on board of trains. Those who purchased their pass through the official website can also make online seat reservations on a designated website. See the pages on how to use trains and shinkansen for more details about how to make a seat reservation.

Are seat reservations mandatory?

  • Limited express trains in the Tokyo region, including the Narita Express to Narita Airport
  • Hayabusa and Hayate trains along the Tohoku / Hokkaido Shinkansen
  • Komachi trains along the Akita Shinkansen
  • Tsubasa trains along the Yamagata Shinkansen
  • Kagayaki trains along the Hokuriku Shinkansen
  • Limited express trains from Osaka / Kyoto in the direction of Kanazawa , Amanohashidate , Kinosaki Onsen , Tottori and Kumano .
  • Limited express trains from Sapporo in the direction of Hakodate and Kushiro .
  • Sunrise Seto/Izumo night trains

In addition, Nozomi trains along the Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen become temporarily fully reserved during the New Year , Golden Week and Obon holidays.

Are seat reservations recommended?

Many trains do not book out, but some do, especially during rush hours and busy travel periods . For peace of mind it is always recommended to make seat reservations especially when traveling in groups and you wish to sit together. After all, seat reservations are free for rail pass holders. On a few trains reservations are mandatory (see above).

What happens if I miss a train for which I have seat reservations?

This may cause inconvenience to other passengers and the railway company and should be avoided by all means. If it does happen, try to cancel your reservation at a ticket office before it is too late. You can then ride a later train in the non-reserved section or make a new reservation for an upcoming departure.

Does the Japan Rail Pass pay off?

Before the massive price increase of October 2023, the Japan Rail Pass would pay off easily for just a few long-distance rides. Now, however, the pass will be more expensive than regular train tickets or flights for most itineraries. It will pay off only for those traveling very long distances within short time periods - for example Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Kanazawa-Tokyo within 7 days - or for people making multiple long-distance side trips from a base.

However, the pass remains a good deal for first-time travelers and others who are intimidated by the complexity of Japanese train tickets , and who do not mind paying extra for the convenience and flexibility provided by the all-you-can-ride privilege of the pass. For example, pass holders won't need to buy tickets whenever they ride trains and can spontaneously make side trips at no additional cost.

Is it useful for urban transportation?

Urban transportation alone will never justify the purchase of a Japan Rail Pass. A pass will only pay off if a lot of long-distance travel is involved. However, in cities that are well served by JR train lines, the Japan Rail Pass can also be useful for urban transportation.

Tokyo and Osaka are two of the few cities where the pass is quite useful thanks to Tokyo's Yamanote Line and Osaka's Loop Line. In many other cities, however, for example in Kyoto , non-JR trains, subways and buses are more convenient but not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Introducing the Tokyo Cheapo Shinkansen Fare Calculator

What a shame it would it be to visit Japan and not zip around on the iconic shinkansen— the country’s fastest train.

Shinkansen bullet train pass Mountain fuji

In 50 years from now when we’re all getting from A to B in Jetsons -style flying cars, wouldn’t it be great to reminisce with the grandkiddos about the speed, finesse and comfort of a Japanese bullet train? To get you one step closer to crossing that future memory off your bucket list, we’ve created the Tokyo Cheapo Shinkansen Fare Calculator .

What is it and how does it work?

bullet train

Cheapo bonus : For destinations like Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, you can book discounted return tickets via our site. Nice.

What is the difference between a JR Pass and individual bullet train tickets?

japan rail pass

Planning a trip is tedious enough; now add a complex rail system and umpteen rail passes to choose from and your head’ll start spinning in no time. And sure, in some cases a pass would make sense, like if you’re planning extensive inter-city travel, but sometimes it’s completely unnecessary.

Consider this scenario : You are a tourist and want to split your time between Tokyo and Kyoto (i.e. you’re making a one-way long-haul trip). Your rail options are 1) an individual shinkansen ticket at ¥ 14,170 OR 2) a JR Pass—which provides 7 days of unlimited travel, even on some shinkansen trains—at ¥ 29,650 . Which do you choose?

√ Answer 1 : The obvious choice for your Tokyo–Kyoto trip is the one-way shinkansen ticket, saving you more than half of the JR Pass price tag.

× Answer 2 : While unlimited travel might seem like a steal, in this Tokyo-to-Kyoto case you’re not using the pass to its full potential and your money goes to waste. You would need to use the JR Pass for two or more inter-city trips to reap the savings.

Why should I take the Shinkansen?

There are a few reasons, one being that it’s a symbol of immense technological achievement. Another being that you value your time more than money, and would rather spend said time doing than traveling . The bullet train is convenience bliss: Tokyo to Kyoto in three hours or less. Compare that to an 8-hour bus ride or an all-day local train ride riddled with cumbersome transfers. (Plus the amount of leg room you get is bananas!)

Luggage on the go: Fines and Charges

Following the (pre-covid) increase in tourist levels, JR decided to bring in limits for ‘extra large’ luggage on certain routes. Started in May 2020, any luggage with a combined width, height and length of between 160 cm and 250 cm now requires its own reservation, made in advance. If it is smaller, it can go in the overhead luggage racks, if it is larger, it cannot be taken onto the train.

Which train lines are affected?

It’s Limited to the Tokaido Shinkansen (between Tokyo and Osaka, including Kyoto), the Sanyo Shinkansen (between Shin-Osaka and Fukuoka, including Himeiji and Hiroshima ) and the Kyushu Shinkansen (between Hakata in Fukuoka and Kagoshima ).

How to reserve a space

To reserve a spot for your luggage, you won’t actually have to pay anything – but you will have to pay for a reserved seat (a few hundred yen more than an un-reserved seat). This will allow you to make a ‘luggage reservation’ and will give you access to the specially designed secure luggage storage sections at the end of certain carriages.

What happens if you don’t reserve

If you fail to reserve a space for your luggage, you will be issued with a ¥ 1,000 fine and will have to upgrade to a reserved seat if you haven’t already. It’s currently unclear what will happen if there are no unreserved seats left, you may have to wait for the next available train (or abandon your worldly goods, it’s up to you).

Still not on board ? Here are some fun facts to get you (loco)motivated:

The shinkansen bullet train passing Mt Fuji

  • The Shinkansen was introduced in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. About 5.6 billion folks have taken a ride since.
  • Maximum operating speed clocks in at 320 km/h (200 mph).
  • The highest speed reached was 603 km/h (375 mph) during a test run for the Chuo Shinkansen in April 2015. The Maglev train uses electromagnets to float above the tracks when speeds of 150 km/h are reached and broke two land speed records during the trial.
  • While the name Shinkansen means ‘new trunk line’ (dissapointing, we know) the English name of bullet train comes from ‘dangan reshha’ the name given to the project when research started in the 1940s.
  • The annual average delay is 54 seconds per operational train (keep in mind, this number takes into account delays due to uncontrollable circumstances like natural disasters as well as the more usual issues).
  • There are 342 daily departures and 1323 seats per train.
  • You can finally take the bullet train from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in Hokkaido in just over 4 hours – the inter-island route opened in 2016. Check our our guide on getting to the northern capital, Sapporo .
  • You can get a great view of Mt.Fuji along the Tokaido Shinkansen route—sit on the right side of the train heading towards Kyoto and Osaka , and on the left side heading towards Tokyo.
  • In keeping with the theme of speed, a cleaning crew needs but 7 minutes to leave the trains looking spic and span – and they wear special uniforms to do so!
