[Top 15] Skyrim Best NPC Mods We Love!

best skyrim mods, skyrim npc

Meeting new faces and hearing their stories is one of my favorite parts of Skyrim.

Skyrim is full of characters to interact with. However, due to so many characters sharing the same voice, the world can sometimes feel empty. While traveling between cities, you can go a long time without seeing anyone else. In my experience, all of these things can make the game feel quite lonely. These mods will breathe a ton of life into your game, and allow you to make some new friends (and enemies) along the way.

15. Solstheim Merchants in Whiterun

npc travel skyrim

One of the best things about this mod is it serves as a link that really makes Solstheim seem connected to Skyrim, not just a separate add-on. This mod introduces two merchants: Skugal (Nord) and Dinmir (Dunmer). They have decided to sell their products from Solstheim in Skyrim. After making a deal with Belethor in Whiterun, they now offer goods from Solstheim… for a fair price, of course.

  • Each of them sells things related to their cultures in Solstheim (Skugal sells items related to the Skaal, while Dinmir sells all things Dunmer culture
  • No speechcraft perks will work on them, as their items are exotic and should be treated as such
  • Their inventory restocks every 3-4 in-game days

Get the mod here for SE.

14. Vampire Clans and Bloodlines

npc travel skyrim

Early on in the Dawnguard DLC, the vampires are new so they are fun new enemies to deal with. But after killing waves upon waves of them that look the same and are named ‘vampire’ or occasionally ‘master vampire’, it gets old fast. (Especially once you’re introduced to the Volkihar Clan.) ‘Why isn’t there a variety of clans throughout Skyrim?’ Now, there are!

  • This mod aims to populate 10 dungeons in total with vampires belonging to unique clans and bloodlines
  • Each bloodline has its own powers, appearance, and style
  • Clan Orlok has sharp claws allowing them to excel in close combat while being skilled mages with unique spells

Get the mod here ./ se version .

13. Realistic Elven Children (Aymar and friends reimagined)

npc travel skyrim

If you’re someone who can’t help but adopt as many sad orphaned children as you can in the game, you might have noticed all of the children are all of the human races. If your character is of elvish or orcish origin, you might be disappointed that there isn’t more diversity. This mod does just that so that you can adopt children that look more like your character. This is an edited version of the original Aymar and Friends that just fits the visual look of a heavily modded game.

  • Adds 8 new ‘mer’(bosmer, dunmer, altmer, orsimer) with 2 for each race
  • Safe to install mid-playthrough (just make sure RS Children Overhaul is installed)
  • They use the default child voices in the game

12. Populated Lands Roads Paths Reborn

npc travel skyrim

Populated Lands: Roads Paths Reborn is one part of a few different mods that work to make Skyrim feel much more busy and alive. The Reborn version of this mod has plenty of fixes that solve high spawn rates that people have had issues within the original mod. You’ll be sure to run into new and old faces on your travels with this mod.

  • Roads are traveled by adventurers, merchants and their bodyguards, refugees, pilgrims, assassins, and more
  • All of the new NPCs are respawnable
  • This is suggested to go at the top of your load order for maximum compatibility with other mods

Get the mod here .

11. Organized Bandits In Skyrim

npc travel skyrim

If you’re not looking to populate Skyrim with NPCs who will want to be friends, try OBIS! This mod adds tons of bandits and a ridiculous amount of content to your game. If you’re looking for more combat challenges throughout the world, this is a great mod to try.

  • 2500 new bandits (with their own faces) sorted into 50 bandit types into level lists
  • 200 unique named bandits that drop expensive rings
  • An in-game book that goes into the lore of all of the new bandit clans

10. Travellers of Skyrim

npc travel skyrim

Travelers of Skyrim is the perfect mod for someone who just wants to see adventurers and merchants of all types traveling all over the land. You will run into new faces traveling on roads, or stopping for a bite at the inn. This mod is sure to add some diversity to your game.

  • 50 new NPCs of many different professions and skills
  • Each NPC will travel between 30 locations across Skyrim
  • Light version available on the downloads page for those who want 28 NPCs instead of 50

9. Interesting Generic NPCs

npc travel skyrim

Interesting Generic NPCs is technically a ‘teaser’ mod for a large-scale quest mod by the same author. Because of this, NPCs may hint at some of the plot points in that mod (particularly about the Thalmor and the Empire). Whether you have an interest in that quest mod or not, these NPCs have unique personalities and are a fine addition to any game.

  • Over 100 custom-voiced NPCs added to the game
  • Each NPC has a randomized profession, personality, and political views
  • Dialogue lines specific to each personality spanning across to new characters

Get the mod here ./ se version .

8. Anna NPCs

npc travel skyrim

Anna NPCs is a mod that adds 10 very unique new characters to your game. They are all available as followers and that is what they are primarily made for. Simply having them in your game will add new content to discover, and even if you don’t want to keep them as followers for long, they are sure to brighten up any game!

  • 10 highly interactive NPCs/followers, aware of each other with conversations between them, they are also quest aware
  • If you do want to bring them along on your travels, they come with several quests, player homes, and much more
  • Over 9,000 lines of custom dialogue, plenty of those interacting with each other

7. Inconsequential NPCs

npc travel skyrim

Inconsequential NPCs has been around for quite a long time, but this mod is so well-loved that it feels wrong to do a list of NPC mods and not include it. This mod aims for a more immersive NPC, one that doesn’t immediately chat you up with their entire life story just because you walked in their direction. These new NPCs don’t really care that you’re Dragonborn, and they certainly won’t battle alongside you for free.

  • 94 new NPCs along with 71 new dialogue scenes
  • Laws and changes depending on who controls different holds: Windhelm under the rule of Ulfric Stormcloak will turn away Argonaians and Khajiits at the gates
  • Fully custom voice acting for all characters

Get the mod here .

6. Populated Cities Towns Villages Reborn

npc travel skyrim

Another in the series of Populated Lands, Populated Cities Towns Villages Reborn is a fixed and improved version of the original. The original mod had complaints of certain bugs and some definite overcrowding, so this version has fixed those issues. This mod will make cities feel much less empty!

  • 200 new NPCs across all of the major holds, and even smaller cities such as Dragon Bridge
  • NPCs vary from laborers, pilgrims, priests, veterans, and citizens
  • Script free, NPCs and respawnable and have their own daily routines

Get the mod here .

5. Full Random NPC Pack

npc travel skyrim

Full Random NPC Pack adds a ton of new characters throughout the world, as well as a small number of travelers that are rarely seen. This mod focuses more so on just having more people around the world, so don’t expect them to take you on unique quests and such. But there will be a ton of new faces to see!

  • 300+ brand new NPCs to the random lists of guards, vampires, soldiers, bandits, etc
  • 2 versions upon installation: vanilla hair and KS Hairdos version (which requires KS Hairdos)
  • A few travelers that are hard to find to discover

4. Interesting NPCs SE

npc travel skyrim

Interesting NPCs has been around for many years, but it took a very long time for someone to port it to Special Edition! It has been known to have its share of compatibility issues and bugs, but it is definitely worth a spot on the list. All of the NPCs added are unique, from their voices to their backstories. You also have much more choice as to how to respond to these characters.

  • 250+ custom-voiced NPCs, 25+ followers, 15+ potential spouses, and over 50 quests
  • Bug fixes and features that are unique to this ‘from scratch’ port to SE
  • Your dialogue choices allow further roleplaying and immersion, and you get to choose what kind of person your character is

3. Diverse Skyrim

npc travel skyrim

This mod takes a lore-friendly approach to increase the diversity among different areas in Skyrim. The mod author noticed that almost every vampire in the game just so happened to be a type of elf and that J’zargo is one of the only mage Khajiits in Skyrim.

  • Over 300 new NPCs with unique appearances for more diversity
  • Nothing that is isn’t lore-friendly: you won’t have High Elf Hunters or Khajiit Legionnaires
  • Added races to different areas and professions to make those NPCs feel much less repetitive

2. More Immersive NPCs

npc travel skyrim

It’s a common occurrence while playing Skyrim to be traveling the roads for hours at night and only come across a few wolf packs. With this mod, you’ll say goodbye to empty streets. Traveling at night will be more dangerous, and there will be many more people to run into on your travels.

  • Lots of new unique NPCs: fugitives, Daedra worshippers, adventurers, skooma dealers, and many more
  • 16 ‘companion’ NPCs that go on adventures during the week, who you can request to come along and help you on your travels
  • If you happen to use Open Cities, this mod is fully compatible out of the box

1.The People of Skyrim 2

npc travel skyrim

The People of Skyrim 2 adds plenty of guard patrols and travelers throughout the world. It certainly adds much more than that, (new settlements, dungeons, interior inn content, and more) but with a name like The People of Skyrim, it is about the people. Compatible with 1000’s of town and city-related mods.

  • New areas and new people to meet in those areas: dungeons, caves, settlements, bridges, and much more
  • New travelers on the road for all races and classes
  • Dawnguard patrols, new content related to the ongoing war in Skyrim

NPCs Travel - Male Takeover, Outfits Fixes and Remove Holotape 1.0.0

npc travel skyrim

About This File

Description.

NPCs Travel  is an essential mod to populate the Commonwealth. But as a gaymer, I would like to only see the male ones traveling around.

Besides, I also fixed a minor bug regarding the outfits and integrated some vanilla clothings and armors leveled lists into the outfit leveled lists, so that if we use some leveled lists injection or manual edits, then those NPCs from NPCs Travel can also have access to mod-added outfits.

Last, I have included an optional file which prevents the holotape from automatically being added to your inventory when you start a new game as well as removes it from Chem Station crafting list. This is used to pair with  NPCs Travel - MCM Settings Menu .

Requirements

  • NPCs Travel  by win2009

Installation

There are 3 files to install. They are independent to each other but do compliment with each other, so choose the one(s) as you prefer.

1. NPCs Travel - Male Takeover

Soft Requirement :  More Different Male Face + All Male Takeover 1.0.6  by @love7732851 . If you don't have that mod installed, then Raiders, Gunners and Harbormen might spawn as females.

This file by itself will make most of the human NPCs in NPCs Travel become males. This mod doesn't overwrite any vanilla records, and thus if you want all the NPCs in NPCs Travel spawning as male, then you are supposed to have "More Different Male Face + All Male Takeover" installed as well.

If used on a current playthrough, then it will need several in-game days for NPCs to reset.

2. NPCs Travel - Outfits Fixes

  • Fixes a bug that Children of Atom might spawn withou any outfits.
  • Integrates some vanilla clothings and armors leveled lists for all the NPCs in NPCs Travel. As a result, these NPCs will have access to the mod-added outfits if you use a lot of leveled lists injection or leveled lists manual hard edits. We can see a lot of men traveling around the Commonwealth with more diversity of apparels.
  • Optional in FOMOD installation : Removes all the headwears, eyewears and masks from some NPCs in NPCs Travel. Therefore, we can see their faces clearly. This optional plugin only works for some NPCs in NPCs Travels, otherwise it will require to overwrite some vanilla records which is prevented in this mod. But I do have a plan to apply this to all the vanilla random NPCs.

3. NPCs Travel - Remove Holotape

This file does what it says in its title. It will prevent the holotape of NPCs Travel from automatically being added into your inventory upon a new game. Besides, it also removes it from Chem Station crafting list. This is only intended to pair with  NPCs Travel - MCM Settings Menu .

Skyrim:NPCs

NPC ( Non-Player Character ) is a generic term for all humanoids (of various races ), other than you, that are encountered while playing Skyrim .

The difference between NPCs and other creatures is somewhat blurry in Skyrim. One key difference is in trapping their souls : NPC souls cannot be trapped into ordinary Soul Gems ; only Black Soul Gems or Azura's Star (Black) can be used.

Classes are still used by NPCs, despite being inaccessible to you.

  • 1 Named NPCs
  • 2 Generic NPCs
  • 3 Console IDs
  • 4.1 Aggression
  • 4.2 Assistance
  • 4.3 Confidence
  • 4.4 Morality

Named NPCs [ edit ]

There are many named NPCs in Skyrim . These people are all listed on the People page. All quest-givers, trainers , and merchants in the game, as well most of the people in cities and towns are named characters.

Some named characters are deemed to be Essential ("unkillable"). If these characters are attacked, they will fall to their knees and surrender when they near zero Health . After a few moments, they will rise up with full health, and will reengage their enemies until the latter parties are dead or out of the area. Protected characters, on the other hand, can be attacked and killed by you but not by NPCs (however, a bug means that poisons can kill even Protected characters). Most NPCs can be killed, but there may be consequences later.

Special categories include:

  • Essential NPCs
  • Protected NPCs

Generic NPCs [ edit ]

There are also many generic NPCs in the game, most of which are randomly generated. If one dies for whatever reason, the game will eventually generate a new random replacement.

Friendly NPCs include:

  • Farmhands CC
  • Imperial Couriers
  • Imperial Soldiers
  • Madmen DB / Madwomen
  • Redoran Guards DB
  • Stormcloak Couriers
  • Stormcloak Soldiers
  • Vigilants of Stendarr

Enemy NPCs include:

  • Ash Zombies CC
  • Cultists DB
  • Dark Seducers CC
  • Falmer Servants
  • Golden Saints CC
  • Hired Thugs
  • Haknir's Crew DB
  • Mogrul's Thugs DB
  • Morag Tong Assassins DB
  • Necromancers
  • Spellswords
  • Werebears DB
  • Werewolves DG

Various other humanoid enemies (e.g., Falmer , dragon priests , hagravens ) are not NPCs, meaning they do not have black souls .

Console IDs [ edit ]

All characters in the game have two distinct FormIDs that can be used in conjunction with console commands: a BaseID and a RefID . Most console commands will accept only one of the two types of IDs: the BaseID is generally used in cases where you want to spawn a new copy of an object, whereas the RefID is generally used in cases where you want to interact with an existing copy of an object. The BaseID points or refers to the immutable prototype or template of an object; the RefID points or refers to the actual in-game working copy of the object.

Although this RefID/BaseID distinction exists for all objects in the game, it is particularly important for all of the game's unique NPCs. Most of the game scripts use RefIDs (via the associated EditorID) to control unique NPCs. This means that if you use the placeatme <BaseID> command to spawn a new copy (with a new RefID) of, for example, Esbern , the new copy of Esbern will be ignored by most of the quest scripts. Your clone may have the correct dialogues and appearance, but many quest updates triggered by Esbern will not be triggered by your clone.

Therefore, when using the console with unique NPCs you should always avoid the placeatme command. All of this site's NPC pages provide the NPC's RefID, as long as the ID is not randomly generated, which should be used to locate or modify the existing copy of the NPC. For example, to move a missing NPC to your location, use:

  • prid <RefId>
  • moveto player

If the NPC is not visible after those commands, then the character may have been disabled, so type:

Or if the character is dead:

  • resurrect 1

If you would prefer to move your character to the location of an NPC (instead of vice versa), you can instead use the command:

  • player.moveto <RefId>

NPC Statistics [ edit ]

The behavior of an NPC is controlled by a variety of NPC-specific statistics.

Aggression [ edit ]

There are four possible values for aggression. Together with the faction relationship combat modifier this governs whether the NPC initiates combat.

  • 0 : Unaggressive. Attacks nobody unless provoked.
  • 1 : Aggressive. Attacks enemies on sight.
  • 2 : Very Aggressive. Attacks enemies and neutral on sight.
  • 3 : Frenzied. Attacks anybody on sight.

Assistance [ edit ]

Assistance determines whether an NPC will help in combat.

  • 0 : Will not help anyone.
  • 1 : Will only help Allies.
  • 2 : Will help Friends and Allies.

Confidence [ edit ]

There are five possible values for confidence:

  • 0 : Cowardly. Always flees from battle at low health.
  • 1 : Cautious. Attacks only lower level enemies.
  • 2 : Average. Avoids higher level creatures.
  • 3 : Brave. Attacks unless being outmatched by the opponent.
  • 4 : Foolhardy. Attacks any type of enemy and fights to the death.

Morality [ edit ]

Morality determines whether or not an NPC will commit various crimes , and controls whether or not a follower will agree to do certain requested actions. There are four possible values for morality:

  • 0 : Any Crime. NPC is willing to commit any requested crime.
  • 1 : Violence Against Enemies. NPC is willing to commit violence against enemies, as well as property crimes. NPC is not willing to attack innocent people.
  • 2 : Property Crime Only. The only crimes the NPC will commit are property crimes (i.e., theft).
  • 3 : No Crime. NPC is not willing to commit any crimes. Followers with this morality will still not report crimes that they witness you committing (with the exception of crimes against them, such as stealing items owned by the follower).

Notes [ edit ]

  • If you complete one or more of an NPC's quests, they will often greet you by saying "You've been a good friend to me. That means something." or another similar phrase indicating their affection . This conveys certain benefits, such as allowing you to take some low value items from their dwelling, or making some NPCs available to become a follower or spouse .

  • Unused NPCs — A list of all NPCs that were not implemented in the final game.

23 Best Skyrim Mods That Improve NPCs

NPCs really help the world of Skyrim come to life. These amazing mods improve the quality of every interaction in the game.

  • Enhance Skyrim NPCs with mods to make them more visually diverse and unique, adding depth to the game world.
  • Players can improve their Skyrim experience by adding mods that overhaul NPC appearances and behaviors for fresh gameplay.
  • Embrace an immersive Skyrim experience by downloading mods that revamp NPC interactions and aesthetics, enhancing gameplay.

Perusing the Nexus mod page for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is like going down a rabbit hole. Thousands of mods added over the course of ten years are available to make Skyrim an even better game than it was in 2011. Furthermore, one aspect of the game in need of serious attention is the NPCs.

Skyrim: The 10 Weirdest & Funniest NPCs In The Game, Ranked

From their appearances to their behaviors, Skyrim 's NPCs haven't aged very well. Finding the best Skyrim NPC mods on Nexus can seem daunting to a beginner. Fortunately, when it comes to making a decision in this department, players can't go wrong with this selection of mods. From visual enhancements to behavioral changes, the wealth of changes these mods bring to the table are pretty impressive in their own right.

Updated on March 26, 2024 by Ritwik Mitra: Skyrim is one of the best video games ever made, with its allure still pretty strong even now. The mediocre reception to Starfield has highlighted Skyrim's strengths even more, with more of its loyal fans preferring to clock in another playthrough of this game instead of checking out a sci-fi adventure with rudimentary exploration that shows off the problems of relying on procedural generation. The hand-made environments feel more engaging and fun to explore than any one of Starfield's numerous forgettable planets. That being said, there's no denying that Skyrim is a dated game, with the updated re-releases of this game still feeling rather lacking in many ways. Thankfully, there are many great mods players can check out for this game that enhance each and every aspect of this title, including ones that make the NPCs of this world feel like living, breathing entities instead of lines of codes.

23 Elven Ears For Breton NPCs

Downloads: 156,607.

  • Creator: AdoresUnicorns123
  • Download Link

The Breton race features a combination of both human and elven ancestry, making them natural mages that players can choose if they want to unleash a lot of powerful magic on their foes. While their human roots are easily seen in how they look, most fans can't be blamed for not even knowing the fact that this race has elven blood, given how they share no roots with this particular half whatsoever at a glance.

This mod aims to make their elven descent more obvious by adding elf ears to Bretons, making for a relatively lore-friendly change that helps this race stand out from others that may look a bit too similar for most people's liking. It's a simple mod, but one that fans of Skyrim who want the NPCs to look as unique as possible will benefit from.

22 Vampires Have Claws

Downloads: 133,903.

Becoming a vampire is no mean feat, with players having to adhere to a ton of restrictions if they want to make the most of this race. Not being able to roam around in the hours when the sun is up can take the wind out of anyone's sails if they feel like their exploration is being hampered as a result, but this is a small price to pay for the many benefits that players can enjoy as a creature of the night.

Even if players don't want to play as a vampire, it can be annoying to see other such powerful creatures look nearly identical to the human race, barring a few visual changes here are there. Players who want to make Skyrim 's vampires look as unique as possible can download a simple mod to make these creatures look as unique as possible, with this fan-made alteration adding claws to their hands. It may seem like a minor change, but most vampires rely on spells to showcase the wealth of their vampiric powers, and seeing them with their clawed hands makes for a pretty intimidating and memorable sight.

21 Children Of The Hist - An Argonian NPC Overhaul

Downloads: 121,453.

  • Creator: SassiestAssassin

Argonians are certainly one of the more unique-looking races in the game, with these reptilian humanoids adding a ton of flavor to the world of The Elder Scrolls . Also known as the Saxhleel, this race can breathe underwater and is generally suited for more roguish activities, with their physical resistances allowing them to weather a wealth of diseases without breaking a sweat.

While most people would argue that Argonians already look pretty unique in the game, most people wouldn't mind an overhaul that makes this race look more unique without losing their reptilian roots. Children of the Hist does precisely this, transforming the look of these Argonians into something way more unique and engaging than what most people could've expected. The sheer amount of color and personality added to this race with such a simple mod makes it clear why any fan of this unique race would be well-serviced with this mod.

20 The Coachmen - Carriage Driver AI Overhaul

Downloads: 369,601.

  • Creator: Cale

The carriage drivers in Skyrim certainly do a great job of making the world feel more believable. However, aside from doing their job and letting the Dragonborn visit cities all over the world, it doesn't really seem like they have anything resembling a life outside of this duty.

7 Worst Skyrim Spells, Ranked

This mod ensures that these carriage drivers feel like actual people instead of elaborate fast travel enablers. It's a relatively simple mod, but any player who wants the world of Skyrim to feel more alive will certainly love using this mod.

19 Additional Dremora Faces

Downloads: 551,144.

  • Creator: AndrealphusVIII

The Dremora is one of the most prominent and villainous species present in the world of The Elder Scrolls. It's only a given that they are featured quite prominently in Skyrim as well, but what players may not appreciate is the fact that most of the Dremora look the same, no matter where players encounter them.

This can prove to be a huge pain for players who find it hard to believe that people from a unique species end up looking similar almost all the time. The Additional Dremora Faces mod alleviates this problem and lets players enjoy some diversity when it comes to these Daedra in the world of Skyrim .

18 Pandorable's Big Overhauls AIO

Downloads: 177,183.

  • Creator: Pandorable

There's no denying that Skyrim 's visuals haven't really aged all that well. NPCs look like clay figurines with wet noodle hair, and these models are clearly not good enough for players who are used to more realistic-looking humans in their games. Thankfully, it's no surprise that the modding community has this base covered as well.

While there are many NPC overhaul mods that tweak the look of several characters in the game, downloading them one at a time can be a major hassle for obvious reasons. Thankfully, with Pandorable's Big Overhauls AIO mod, players can integrate a bunch of unique AI overhauls with a single click, which streamlines the modding process quite a bit!

17 Inworld AI

Downloads: n/a.

AI has progressed by leaps and bounds, with the technology showing just how impressive it can really be. A combination of deep learning systems and complex algorithms has allowed this technology to become the next big thing in the tech world, and it's easy to see why so many big industry giants are leaning towards making AI-aided software.

Skyrim: Best Followers In The Game, Ranked

Even Skyrim 's modding community has decided to embrace AI wholeheartedly, with the Inworld AI mod giving NPCs near-infinite dialogue as players talk to them about whatever they want. Sure, the dialogue may be somewhat generic and still lacks the human touch that many people criticize AI-generated content for, but there's no denying that this technology is truly groundbreaking and can possibly make games more immersive and enjoyable than ever before.

16 Tamrielic Names

Downloads: 143,500.

  • Creator: sasnikol

While the world of Skyrim is filled with NPCs , most of them don't even have names! Instead, they are referred to by status or post, which doesn't do a great job of making the world feel lived-in. After all, can players really delude themselves into thinking that each NPC is unique if they don't even have a name?

Suffice it to say, the Tamrielic Names mod will prove to be absolutely invaluable in this regard. As the title suggests, this mod gives every character in the game unique names to help add to their personality in a small yet meaningful. Most people would doubt if this mod could actually add to the immersion of the world, but there's something inherently great about not seeing 'Whiterun Guard' or 'Merchant' plastered on the screen over and over again when players interact with certain NPCs.

15 Better Vampire NPCs

Downloads: 328,735.

  • Creator: Brehanin2

It's no secret that Skyrim is full of mortal danger. Vampires represent one such threat to the Dragonborn's health. Traveling at night can be a perilous proposition, although experienced players probably won't have too much trouble. Revamping Skyrim 's vampiric enemies through mods is highly recommended for fans looking for a challenge.

The Better Vampires NPCs mod overhauls the game's bloodsuckers, making them a more serious threat as a result. Vampires now come in a more diverse variety of combat classes, assaulting the player with a wider array of armor and weaponry. As such, their behavior is unpredictable and harder to counter.

14 Immersive College NPCs

Downloads: 959,743.

  • Creator: VorpalRunner and SomethingObscure

Why should vampires have all the fun? Players know full well that Skyrim appears quite sparse in areas that should otherwise be populous. One location where this is readily apparent is the College of Winterhold. Besides a small collection of students and professors, the College really doesn't live up to its name.

Immersive College NPCs is a must-have mod for players who enjoy frequenting Skyrim 's magical university. The mod adds a smattering of new NPCs, including students, mages , guards, and even a groundskeeper. When looking to breathe new life into the College, give this mod a shot.

13 Protect Your People

  • Creator: iMACobra

For Skyrim players, it's inevitable that, at some point, a useful NPC is going to die. As stated previously, Skyrim doesn't lack mortal danger. Whether it's due to an inconvenient dragon attack or a vampire raid, it's likely that some poor sap gets caught in the crossfire and doesn't make it.

Skyrim: The 20 Strongest Mages, According To Lore

It's a fact of the game that can often be frustrating. However, with Protect Your People, fans can rest a little easier. This mod helps ensure that useful NPCs survive these random, deadly encounters. No more loading an old save just to bring someone back from the dead!

12 Citizens Of Tamriel

Downloads: 810,574.

  • Creator: Craftian

Although Skyrim is populated with plenty of NPCs, most of them aren't particularly well-rounded. They give their quests, reward the player when the mission is complete......and that's about it. Fortunately, there are mods available that make the people of Skyrim a bit more interesting.

Citizens of Tamriel adds a new cast of characters to the proceedings that help the game feel a bit more immersive. The individuals introduced by this mod are richer in terms of character development than their vanilla counterparts. There are even opportunities for branching dialogue, which opens up new possibilities in subsequent playthroughs. This mod is a part of the ezPG collection, which houses its latest version along with several other great mods that are worth checking out!

11 NPC Lookup

Downloads: 102,930.

  • Creator: doticu

Fans undoubtedly do a lot of traveling in Skyrim . Most of the time, this traveling involves speaking to an NPC, performing a task of some sort, and returning to the quest-giver for a reward. It's a satisfying formula but one that eventually becomes tedious, especially by the hundredth playthrough.

A handy tool for players who don't mind breaking the immersion is the NPC Lookup mod. The add-on incorporates an in-game menu where players can instantly teleport to the desired NPC. Specific characters can also be spawned at the Dragonborn's location. It's a nifty time-saver for fans who want to cut out some of the fluff.

10 No NPC Greetings

Downloads: 711,161.

  • Creator: Cipscis-Reize

For players who have already conquered Skyrim dozens of times already, hearing the same robotic greetings can be awfully tiresome. The last thing fans need to hear for the hundredth time is how their player character is "someone who can get things done."

Skyrim: Everything You Need To Know About The Atronach Forge

One of the most useful mods in a player's repertoire is certainly No NPC Greetings. The mod comes with two options. Players can either eliminate NPC greetings altogether or make them a bit less common by reducing the distance required for them to say something. It's hard to ever play Skyrim again without this feature.

9 RS Children Overhaul

Downloads: 3,779,889.

  • Creator: isophe

It's clear that the children who inhabit Skyrim didn't receive as much attention from the developers as the rest of the game's NPCs. Aesthetically, the children are practically identical carbon copies of each other. It's a small detail that can still break the immersion ever so slightly.

To fix that problem, fans should consider installing RS Children Overhaul. The mod overhauls the appearance of all the children in the game, giving them each their own unique look. It's also compatible with a few other mods that enhance Skyrim 's kids, making it a great addition to any load order.

8 Organized Bandits In Skyrim

Downloads: 3,259,065.

  • Creator: Indigoblade and the OBIS Team

One of the most common enemy types in Skyrim is the bandits. In the vanilla game, they possess no discernible organization or uniqueness. One bandit is the same as the next. However, for those looking to spice up the game's criminal scene, Organized Bandits in Skyrim is highly recommended.

Also known as OBIS, this mod is impressive in its scope. It organizes Skyrim 's bandits into their exclusive gangs. Each clan even has a hierarchy composed of wannabes, foot soldiers, to the gang leader himself. The gangs also come with their strengths and weaknesses, as well as lore. Definitely give this stellar mod a try when reinstalling Skyrim .

7 Immersive Patrols

Downloads: 5,392,668.

  • Creator: Scrabbulor

The land of the Nords, despite being a tough place to live, is still quite populous. However, the vanilla game tends to feel downright barren in certain places. For a region that's currently experiencing a civil war, a dragon invasion, and a vampire menace, everything feels unusually deserted in spots.

Skyrim: The 18 Most Brutal Difficulty Mods, Ranked

The Immersive Patrols mod goes a long way toward making the environment feel more "lived in." Stormcloak and Imperial soldiers will now patrol the major highways and sometimes even fight each other. Members of the Dawnguard and Thalmor are more of a presence as well. All of it makes the environment feel more populous and interesting.

6 Interesting NPCs

Downloads: 6,274,460.

  • Creator: Kris Takahashi

By now, it's no stretch to imagine that many veteran Skyrim players have met every NPC in the game at least once. For those fans, there probably aren't too many surprises left for them to experience. The solution? Add a whole host of brand-new NPCs to the game.

Interesting NPCs is one of the most popular Skyrim mods on Nexus, with over 1.4 million total downloads and counting. The mod itself is massive, adding over 250+ NPCs to the game, along with 25+ new followers, 15+ marriable NPCs, and 50+ quests. The mod strives to make each of these NPCs unique , which is very much appreciated.

5 Diversity – A Character Overhaul

Downloads: 393,415.

  • Creator: Pat Mahoney

It's one thing to add more NPCs or make them behave differently. But when looking to enhance these non-playable characters, it's best not to forget about their visual presentation. NPCs in Skyrim look downright ugly by today's standards. Thankfully, there's no shortage of mods that aim to rectify that issue.

A great mod that players may want to consider is Diversity - A Character Overhaul. This mod, unlike many of its kind on Nexus, doesn't drastically alter the appearances of the NPCs in a way that breaks the lore. Instead, NPCs still look like their vanilla counterparts but are given a fresher, cleaner coat of paint. Each character feels a bit more unique as a result.

4 Populated Cities, Towns & Villages

Downloads: 832,595.

  • Creator: Sands of Time Team

It's common for NPCs, especially those in older titles, to behave like robots. They don't always feel like living, breathing characters who go about their day like average folk. This is a glaring problem with Skyrim 's NPCs, who are comically stiff and predictable in their routines.

Skyrim: The 20 Best Graphics Mods You Need To Install

One mod that fans simply must try is Populated Cities, Towns & Villages. The aim of it is to breathe new life into the daily actions of the NPCs. Characters will now take strolls through town, browse the wares of different shops , pray at temples, go to lunch at the local tavern, and much more. Don't leave home without this mod!

Skyrim mod lets you match the pace of NPCs so you can more easily follow them around

Another essential SoS mod.

Surely everyone knows this extremely specific frustration: a game expects you to accompany an NPC while they lead you to the next part of the quest, talking the whole way, but they travel slower than your running speed and faster than your walking speed. You have to alternate awkwardly between a stroll and a jog the whole way, instead of just being able to walk alongside them like a normal person.

While some games let you match the pace of NPCs when you need to, Skyrim does not. Which can be a real hassle when Esbern or some other mouthy plot-related character has to guide you to the next bit of story. Here's modder wSkeever with the solution: Simplicity of Stalking—Automatically Follow NPCs .

It's a straightforward mod. Simply hold shift and mouse over an NPC to make the "follow" option appear. Press E to activate it, and you'll follow them wherever they go—even through loading screens—whether they're a quest NPC or a courier you just feel like following to see where they go. I tested it by doing exactly that, and it worked like a charm. To stop following them, press any movement key or attack.

If you're wondering about the unusual name, it's part of a series of extremely specific mods with names that abbreviate to "SOS". It began with Schlongs of Skyrim, but going out of your way to name your mod so it has the same abbreviation has been a trend among Skyrim modders for a while now. Just looking at wSkeever's work, there's Security Overhaul SKSE , Sidequests of Skyrim , Sweeping Organizes Stuff , and Subtypes of Snowberries , among many others.

To install Simplicity of Stalking, you'll first need to install PapyrusUtil and powerofthree's Papyrus Extender if you haven't already, then download it from Nexus Mods .

Elder Scrolls

Fast Travel (Skyrim)

  • Edit source
  • View history

Fast Travel is a method of travel in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . It is a way of quickly "teleporting" to any previously discovered location . The travel takes place almost instantaneously in real-world time through a loading screen , but in game time will still pass by as if the Dragonborn had walked there. When using fast travel, the time elapsed may be longer than the time it would have taken to run to the destination, especially when the distance is short.

Fast Travel can be done via the world map or by using one of the carriages stationed near the main gate of many cities. Fast travel via world map is free, but can only be done to a location that has already been discovered. Travel via carriage is limited to major cities, regardless if they have been visited or not before, with a fee relative to distance and the size of the destination city (for example it costs more to travel from Whiterun to Dawnstar than from Windhelm to Solitude even though the distance between Windhelm and Solitude is greater). The Hearthfire DLC allows the Dragonborn to hire a carriage for their homestead , which will also go to smaller cities  and towns ( Darkwater Crossing , Dragon Bridge , Ivarstead , Karthwasten ,  Kynesgrove , Old Hroldan Inn , Riverwood , Rorikstead , Shor's Stone , and Stonehills ).

With Dawnguard , fast travel can also be done between Castle Volkihar and the main island of Skyrim by boat. With Dragonborn , the initial trip to Solstheim must be by boat. (Conventional fast travel can be used later, between the docks at Windhelm and Raven Rock .)

  • 1 Conditions
  • 2 Fast travel time

Conditions [ ]

The fast travel cannot be done while in any of the following conditions:

  • While indoors
  • While jumping
  • While falling
  • While mounting or dismounting a horse .
  • While being too close to enemies
  • While being pursued by enemies/ Hold Guards
  • While taking health damage (e.g. from poison )
  • Riding on horseback.
  • Under the effect of a Fortify Carry Weight potion that is strong enough. There is no limit on fast travel distance while the potion is in effect. However, the effect of the potion immediately wears off after the arrival causing the Dragonborn to be overburdened again.

Fast travel time [ ]

Approximate time to travel between cities/towns wearing Light Armor , measured by in-game hours:

  • The amount and type of armor worn affects how much time passes during fast travel.
  • Fast traveling while on foot or on horseback takes the same amount of time. The only difference will be how the Dragonborn arrives: on foot next to the horse, or on horseback.
  • Any positive or negative effects (such as from a disease ) will still progress during fast travel.
  • Neither the Dragonborn, their horse, or any companion will encounter any enemies during fast travel.
  • Due to the respawning of enemies , dragons and creatures being scripted to happen when fast travelling; if fast travel is never used, after a certain time, encounters with them will reduce noticeably.
  •  PC     360     PS3    When arriving at a location by fast travel, random creatures can spawn in front of the Dragonborn. For example, a non-hostile bandit might spawn every time they fast-travel, who can be talked to but will become hostile if attacked. A similar bug happens when fast-traveling to Falkreath , causing all of the Hold Guards to spawn at the entrance to the city.
  •  PC    Fast traveling with followers to northern cities like Windhelm or the College of Winterhold can trigger a sliding effect on arrival. Normally, this effect is not critical; however, it is possible to sometimes slide for a very long distance and fall from a cliff.
  •  360    After waiting in a location for a long time (two or three weeks), or if multiple other characters have been played before returning to play as the affected character, fast traveling to a location might spawn enemies that have made into thralls (or raised as zombies) in the past. They will attack each other unless they are in the same faction. (Only bandits or spiders, for example).
  •  360     PS3    If fast travel is selected to any location and the back button is immediately pressed, the fast travel will not occur, the game will no longer be paused and the character menu will not be able to be opened. The pause menu can be opened, but saving the game will be the only option that functions, not loading an existing save. The "quit game" option is available, however, allowing a more time consuming reload of the game by saving and exiting the game. Reloading the game will fix this.
  •  360 (Fix)     PS3 (Fix)    Manually shut down the console, as any attempt to open the Xbox or PS3 menu will result in the loading circles on every option and they will never load.
  •  PC     360    Fast traveling on horseback to the College of Winterhold may cause one to appear several feet above the bridge.
  •  PC (Fix)    Quickly Fast traveling to another place before the horse falls off may solve the problem.
  •  PC     360     PS3    Sometimes, when attempting to fast travel, the game will say "You cannot fast travel while guards are pursuing you," even if guards are not pursuing the Dragonborn.
  •  360     PS4    Fast traveling from a snowy location can sometimes cause it to snow in areas that do not normally experience snowy weather conditions.
  •  PC (Fix)    Fast traveling to any location will fix this.
  •  PC (Fix)    Exiting the game to the desktop restarting will fix this.
  • By opening the Journal and pressing the "show on map" button for quest objectives it is possible to access the map, and thus fast travel even under circumstances that normally prevent access to the map, such as after the Dragonborn dies or at the beginning of the game while Helgen is under attack.

After hours of Skyrim NPCs blurting out NSFW dialogue courtesy of his Twitch chat, streamer concludes "this entire thing was a mistake"

After giving his Twitch viewers the unfathomable power of being able to make Skyrim NPCs say whatever they want using a purpose-built mod, streamer and ex-software engineer Blurbs has concluded that his creation "was a mistake."

Blurbs' Skyrim mod has a simple purpose, but you can see how it could quite easily make any stream of the game take a chaotic turn. Using messages in the chat, subscribers are able to create NPCs, along with a short greeting, and the tone in which it should be delivered using the power of text to speech. As you'd guess, viewers are taking full advantage of this ability to say the silliest and most absurd things possible, with highlights over the last few days including NPCs announcing "I'm gonna bust," threatening to feast on the streamer's flesh, and giving out some very NSFW compliments.

"It's day three of Skyrim Twitch TTS mod and you are all degenerates for encouraging this behavior," Blurbs wrote on Twitter after yesterday's stream. "It's somehow gotten worse and NPCs are putting things in orifices… Help me."

Needless to say, there've already been moments where the streamer has had to intercept messages to stop them being read out in full. Most of the time though, he's forced to sit with the consequences of his actions: "This entire thing was a mistake," he says, after one particularly egregious message.

Despite the chaos, Blurbs isn't done with the text-to-speech Skyrim streams, and plans to keep on trucking through it. As the idea continues to grow in popularity, however, it seems likely that the NPC dialogue will devolve further as more viewers eager to cause problems on purpose flood the chat.
