Port Arthur Ghost Tour - Ghost tour at Port Arthur, Tasmania

  • Info rmation
  • Reviews (0)

Darkness falls, and Port Arthur’s hidden side emerges. This is a different place after sunset, full of mystery and intrigue.

As the sun sets, come out to the dark grounds of the Port Arthur Historic Site for your 90-minute, lantern-lit Ghost Tour. Follow your expert guide through some of Port Arthur’s more infamous buildings and ruins, and hear vivid stories of unexplained events that have baffled and alarmed convicts, free settlers, soldiers and visitors.

More than 1000 people died at Port Arthur during its 47-year history as a penal settlement, and some people say that the souls of the departed have never left. Documented ghost stories have been associated with Port Arthur since 1870, and since that time, many people have added to Port Arthur’s haunted reputation with their own accounts of paranormal activity.

As the lantern light guides you through the darkness, and strange stories unfold, you’ll discover Port Arthur’s secrets, and decide for yourself if the tales are true.

Are Ghost Tours suitable for children?

This depends on the age and 'stage' of your children. Ghost Tours are popular with older children. If your child is very young, very active or tends to suffer with nightmares, then Ghost Tours may not be suitable. If your child is disruptive to the tour, your guide will request that you leave the tour.

Ghost tour + dinner

We bought the ghost tour and dinner combo, with the food being in the 1830 restaurant which was on site. We were thoroughly impressed with the tour, and our tour guide Jim was very informative and clearly very knowledgable on the history of the site. We especially liked the fact that although it was a spooky ghost tour with reports of sightings to match, it was not 'cheesy' in the slightest. All information was balanced and believable. Something that we weren't expecting was the abundance of wildlife we saw on the tour, from dozens of wallabys to rabbits and even a bandicoot! We would definitely recommend this if you're in the area, especially if you're lucky enough to get Jim as your guide!

We had a great day at Port Arthur with an informative boat tour around the harbour and a very entertaining tour around the old cell block. As well as the buildings we are familiar with, there are some beautiful gardens which are reminiscent of the gardens planted by original settlers and officials when the township and prison were set up. Many places to sit and contemplate the horrors that were perpetrated on folk incarcerated here but also much natural beauty. A day well spent. We were informed and entertained and were left with plenty to think about.

We spent an amazing day at Port Arthur. Loved the included walking tour which gave a lot of insight to the various locations and some fascinating stories from the history of the site. Equally good was the boat cruise, which took in the stunning scenery from the water. There is so much to look at it easily fills a whole day. We especially enjoyed the separate prison with its fascinating stories of individual prisoners. They have done a great job bringing the dark but important convict history to life whilst also appropriately acknowledging the 1996 tragedy. A must visit in Tasmania and a visit I will remember for a long time. There is something unique and special about this place.

Spend at least half a day here to fully soak in the historic significance and haunting atmosphere of the former convict settlement. Grounds are vast so you need to plan your itinerary carefully. Guided tours of 45 minutes start every hour or so and boat ride schedules are fixed so you need to work out when to do each. As we arrived at about 12 noon we had lunch first, then took the boat ride (20 minutes) from the jetty at 1.40pm. It was a very good introduction to the essentials of the island as the commentator described the incarceration of young boys who could learn a trade here, pointed to the location of the cemetery (separate tours here at additional cost), picked up bunch of visitors on that tour and continued back, indicating site of penitentiary from a distance. Drinks and snacks available on board especially good for those who missed lunch if they went for the 12.30 or 12.45 guided tour. Therr was a tour at 2.30pm,a large crowd somewhat deterred by sudden rain but after huddling in a room with photographs of different buildings in the era, church, penitentiary etc, some moved off to explore on their own. The tower watch in the medieval style of castle watches was photogenic and hiking further up are remnants of the hospital where many were treated for scurvy. Officers' quarters, lovely gardens and recreational areas contrast with the harsh living conditions of the convicts. Back at the visitors centre, a room with details of particular prisoners invites you to match a playing card with a particular inmate. Mine was a 15 year old lad sentenced for theft and repeated offences. The cafe has a good variety of mains including curry of the day, snacks, coffee, sandwiches and a souvenir shop next door. We left at 4.30pm, quite impressed by the well-organised programs and conservation of an important part of Tasmania 's history.

port arthur ghost tour and dinner

The group was quite large, the guide managed us all very well. Stories were interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed being on the site after dark, especially seeing the church lit up, was beautiful. I was disappointed that the tour didn’t go down into the larger ruins, but as it was I still really enjoyed it Would highly recommend it.

This is very much a lovely piece of land with a few historic buildings and a nice ocean view. There is plenty of grounds to wander around and read a few information plates, but beyond that its a pretty low level of excitement. I feel kids, teens and even some of us adults would get bored reasonably quickly. Whilst its great to keep history alive, it's certainly a little on the slow side.

Thank you for your feedback, leanneculinapenza. We are very proud of our site and what it can offer visitors, so if there are any suggestions you may have on how to improve the experience, please contact us at [email protected]. Kind regards the Port Arthur Historic Site team

Port Arthur Ghost Tours

Port Arthur Convict Church by night

Port Arthur can seem a very different place after sunset, full of mystery and intrigue. Join a lantern-lit walking tour to experience the World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site by night.

After sharing the hidden side of the convict settlement for more than 20 years, Port Arthur remains Australia’s ‘must-do’ ghost tour experience.

Rich storytelling and pathways through darkened ruins and heritage buildings reveal bizarre occurrences during Port Arthur’s history, baffling and alarming convicts, soldiers, residents and many of our visitors today.

The 90-minute tour covers a distance of two kilometres. Due to the limited access through the dark recesses of our heritage buildings, the Ghost Tour is not suitable for people with restricted mobility and is not wheelchair accessible.

Port Arthur Ghost Tours operate after dark every Wednesday to Saturday (except Christmas night). Departure times change throughout the season so check the website for details.

Tours are limited to 25 people, bookings are essential.

Port Arthur Ghost Tours operate in most weather conditions, so make sure you’re prepared for the conditions.
