Fusing jazz, funk and hip-hop, The Herbaliser offers heavy grooves inspired by American jazz and funk by the likes of Roy Ayers, James Brown and Ramsey Lewis alongside early east coast hip-hop, through the Jungle Brothers, Afrika Bambaata and Grandmaster Flash.

Featuring Jake Wherry, former bassist in acid jazz group, the Propheteers alongside South London, UK DJ, Ollie Teeba, the pair create modern breakbeat and trip-hop that is instilled with early instrumental hip-hop tradition as well jazz and funk grooves, making them stand out from the crowd in the modern beat scene. The band initially signed with Coldcut's legendary electronic label, Ninja Tune, after impressing bosses Matt Black and Jonathon More with an early demo, before moving to IK7 Records in 2008.

Their initial EP releases on Ninja Tune in the early 90s were warmly received, establishing the pair in London's (UK) breakbeat scene. Their debut LP, "Remedies," was released in 1995, helping to provide exposure to both the band and Ninja Tune. Their recordings were sample-laden, full of early funk and acid-jazz grooves alongside early hip-hop beats. Their second LP, "Blow Your Headphones" (1997), gave further depth to the trip-hop sound, with 1999's "Very Mercenary and 2002's "Something Wicked This Way Comes," focusing more on hip-hop elements.

The group have also been commissioned to provide remixes for a number of artists, including DJ Food, Raw Stylus and Coldcut. Live, The Herbaliser play with a full band, who were also utilised for the recording project, "Session 1" in 2000. Their live band has slowly gained more influence with their recorded work, seen in 2005's "Take London" and 2008's "Same as It Never Was." The latter was their debut release on IK7 Records. They have since created their own label, Department H, releasing their seventh studio album, "There Were Seven," on this imprint.

Throughout their career, The Herbaliser have collaborated with some of the finest acts in Hip Hop and the beat scene, including Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Rakaa iriscience of Dilated Peoples, Blade and Mungo's HiFi.

Live reviews

The core partnership of Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba, otherwise known as The Herbaliser, has been functioning since the early 90s and still going strong. I caught their show for the first time round about the end of 2008, after they’d undergone some recent changes in their lineup, bringing on stage a half-dozen strong crew of musicians, including a horn section, and a new addition, singer Jessica Darling. Musically also, they had taken a more R&B song-based orientation that focussed more on Darling’s vocals, which at times left behind the instrumental hip hop sound they became so renowned for in the mid-to-late 90s. This is maybe the perennial challenge to all bands who take a new direction - once you’ve done enough of one thing, and move on, there’s always some doubt as to how many fans will follow. Whatever your preference of Herbaliser vintage, one thing you can be sure of is that the band will be made up of some seriously groovy session players, who make for an astoundingly tight and funky live band, of the kind that you really can’t help but move to, and for me that’s worth the price of admission alone. Darling is also an accomplished singer with a hugely soulful and powerful voice, which fits perfectly with The Herbaliser’s new direction. But rest assured for early Herbaliser fans, they throw in a fair few tracks from their early days.

The Herbaliser is a jazz hip hop group formed by Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba (Born Oliver Lawrence Trattles) in London, England during the early 1990s. Although currently releasing on their own label and having previously been signed to !K7 Records, they were one of the best-known acts from Ninja Tune. They have released 11 albums, including two DJ mixes: one for Ninja Tune's Solid Steel series and the other for Fabric's Live Mix series. The Herbaliser's album Same As It Never Was was their first release on !K7 Records. Their latest album There Were Seven was released in September 2012, on their own label Department H.

About The Herbaliser

The Herbaliser is a UK based hip hop and trip hop group formed in London in 1995 by production and DJ team Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba. Since forming, the duo have released 8 studio albums exploring a variety of musical genres including downtempo, jazz, funk and dub. They have collaborated with a number of artists, including rapper Jean Grae as well as Amy Winehouse and Roots Manuva. Their music has featured in television shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Grand Theft Auto, as well as numerous films. The band have also toured extensively in Europe, the United States and Japan, and represented the UK at the European Culture Congress in Poland in 2008. The Herbaliser continue to write and produce music today.

The Herbaliser was formed in 1995 by Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry, their sample based sound was created using records that the duo found digging; Hip Hop, jazz, soul and old movie soundtrack samples became an iconic characteristic of the group.

Their first albums achieved commercial success, ‘ Blow Your Headphones ’ extended their output to include an 8 piece live band. The Herbaliser Band continued on, touring internationally, to great reception, from diverse audiences and would become regulars at a multitude of electronic, dance, dub and jazz festivals around the world.

In 2024, after something of a hiatus, The Herbaliser Band have reformed with original members Ralph Lamb (trumpet/flugelhorn), Andrew Ross (tenor/baritone saxflute), Micah Moody (drums), Patrick Dawes (percussion) with James Morton (Alto Sax) Oliver Parfitt (keyboards), Conor Cotterill (bass) & of course DJ Ollie Teeba on the turntables.
