9-Day Pilgrimage to Medjugorje: A Spiritual Exploration Tour

9-Day Pilgrimage to Medjugorje: A Spiritual Exploration

Best Tour Ever!!! That is saying something since we travel by tour annually. We're already planning our next tour with Balkland!!! Mike treated us to an exceptional tour!!! It was the perfect balance of tour with plenty of personal time to steep ourselves in the peaceful serenity of Medjugorje and all the services available for visiting pilgrims. We were so grateful for the local guide Blazenka who Mike introduced us to. She shared the incredible history and spirituality of Medjugorje with heart felt joy and her own personal experiences. She also let Mike know that Ivan would be having an extraordinary apparition at the Blue Cross on our last night in Medjugorje so we were able to attend that incredible event. After saying good bye to Medjugorje, Mike took us to the Unesco heritage site Pocitelj, a 15th century village. Then we had a wonderful tour at the impressive Andrija Winery. On the drive back to Sarajevo we visited the gorgeous Kravica Waterfalls and the lovely Bona Spring recreational park!!! Our tour ended with an evening stroll thru historic downtown Sarajevo and a delicious final dinner together!!! It was perfect!!! We are so looking forward to returning for another memorable tour with Balkland!!!

We loved this tour. Yes, the itinerary is very full, but we saw, and learned so much. Our guides (Thierry, and later Corsenka) were both wonderful and looked after us so well.

I chose this tour & dates to parallel World Cup matches, esp. following Croatia & Serbia when in their countries. Tour Guide Marko was always professional & kind, adjusting to my pace. He lent me his arm on stairs without railings & slippery wet cobblestones. Marko was an excellent driver of our luxury Skoda, great listener & a futbol fan, and always punctual. I wouldn't change a thing! Thank you!

Our private tour through the southern Balkans was amazing, so much to see, our guide Dan was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and professional. He suggested many additional sites for us which made this such a special experience. Thank you to George who facilitated the organisation of the tour through Tour Radar and was always very supportive. Overall, this tour was a very good experience. Liviu the tour guide and driver was excellent in terms of sharing his knowledge about the Balkan countries. He is well versed in history. I learned a lot from him. He also took the extra mile in making sure we were happy with the tour. The hotels were generally fine, except a few where the rooms were small and sometimes with no elevator. Getting AC was oftentimes difficult, but it was not too warm outside yet.

It was good. I didn’t rate it excellent because it was too many people (over 40) and because the majority was Spanish speaking, the guide always spoke in Spanish first and us English speaking have to wait for our English translation before we can see the places. By that time, we have wasted a lot of time waiting and we only had limited time to see the places. The guides should be taking turns on explaining in Spanish and English. In the bus, that would be okay but in the places we were visiting, they should have taken turns. Otherwise, our guide was good and knowledgeable.

Queen of Peace – Medjugorje Pilgrimage

A tiny Croatian village, six children and the faith of millions from all over the world have shed new light on what it means to be a true pilgrim on life’s journey. In this hallowed place of Medjugorje, this valley of miracles, the Mother of God beckons us forward.

DAY 1 ARRIVE MEDJUGORJE

On arrival, we will be met and transferred up to the apparition village of Medjugorje in Bosnia & Herzegovina. As our pilgrimage together begins, we prepare for a most extraordinary encounter of grace and peace over the next eight days.

Medjugorje overnight (D)

DAY 2 – 7 THE MEDJUGORJE PILGRIMAGE (BD DAILY)

“I have come to tell the world that God exists … that peace is necessary for the salvation of the world. Mankind must be reconciled with God and with one another”. These words came as a soothing balm to a troubled world and were first spoken by Our Lady to six village children in June 1981. Since then, a legacy of remarkable events has turned Medjugorje into one of the world’s most acclaimed pilgrimage places. For more than 40 years up until the present day Our Lady has been appearing on a daily basis to give countless messages to the children. Some of these messages are private, some are for all people and some contain secrets that Our Lady has revealed to the children about future events of the world.

Healings, miracles, wonders and conversions – these have been occurring for so long. Endless streams of pilgrims over the years have come to receive these graces and return to their homelands renewed.

The activities here will be evenly proportioned by our guide throughout the stay to allow time for rest and personal retreat. Each evening we should be advised of the following day’s agenda, as many events in Medjugorje are spontaneous. Here are some of the highlights we hope to include:

• The Hill of Apparitions – Make the journey in prayer up to this sacred site where the first apparitions took place and Our Lady first told the children ‘I have come to tell the world that God exists … that peace is necessary for the salvation of the world’.

• Climb Mt Krizevac – The Mountain of the Cross dominates the landscape. Pray the Stations of the Cross and ascend the grace-filled path, which rises to the breathtaking summit with its commanding 30-foot cement cross built in 1933.

• Visit Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Retreat House – commonly known as “the Castle”, and hear the amazing testimony of Patrick Latta , a successful businessman and car dealer from Canada, who received a great grace of conversion through the messages of Our Lady. In 1993, he and his wife Nancy left everything behind and moved to Medjugorje during the height of the war.

• Visit the Cenacolo Community – ‘Field of Life’ is the name of the community that Sr Elvira has founded for young men who were once drug addicts. We will be touched to hear their miraculous testimonies of faith.

• Special visionary events – Join Ivan’s prayer group during a special outdoor apparition or be present when Vicka has a special meeting at night on Mt Krizevac (subject to spontaneity).

• Meet the Visionaries – The visionaries regularly receive groups, give explanations, pray with and answer pilgrims’ questions (subject to spontaneous availability).

• Inspiring talks – There is an enriching Franciscan talk most afternoons in English.

• Share occasional group gatherings – Optional and led by your Priest, for voluntary sharing, prayer or group rosary.

• Enjoy personal free time daily – All activities listed do remain optional.

• Day tour to Dubrovnik – visit the beautiful walled city known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. Within the stone walls of its Old City, we embark on a guided tour, visiting the Basilica of St Blaise, where we celebrate Mass before setting out on our exploration of grand palaces, buzzing plazas and remarkable churches.

MEDJUGORJE EVENING PRAYER PROGRAM & CONFESSION (Summer times/Winter times)* 5:00/6:00 pm – Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary 6:00/7:00 pm – Holy Mass in Croatian After Mass – Blessings of objects, Prayer for health of soul and body, Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament (Tue/Thu/Sat) Veneration of the Holy Cross (Fri) *(Summer time: June 1st to August 31st / Winter time: September 1st to May 31st)

DAY 8 DEPART MEDJUGORJE

Our pilgrimage concludes after breakfast this morning or continue on the optional post-tour Rome extension. (B)

All tour inclusions and order of daily arrangements remain subject to change due to any unforeseen circumstances, which may arise, or at the discretion of the tour leadership.

Rome Extension

Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls Rome

DAY 8 DEPART MEDJUGORJE / ARRIVE ROME

Today we are transferred to the airport for our flight connections to Rome.

Welcome to Rome

Tonight gather with your fellow pilgrims for our first group dinner in the Eternal City.

Rome overnight (BD)

DAY 9 ROME - THE VATICAN & COLOSSEUM

We start our pilgrimage today with a visit to the Vatican Museums . Wander the spectacular chambers leading to the Sistine Chapel to view Michelangelo’s masterpieces, including the magnificent fresco of the Last Judgment. Continue through to the awe-inspiring St Peter’s Basilica , the largest church in the world for an informative exploration. Our guided tour will feature among other highlights Michelangelo’s stunning Pieta, the tomb of Pope St John Paul II , the great Confessional and the Crypt containing the tombs of several Popes.

In the afternoon we enter into the most visited attraction in Rome – the Colosseum . In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV declared the Colosseum a sacred site, as it was a place where early Christians had been martyred. View also the Circus Maximus and the Roman Forum en route.

DAY 10 PAPAL EVENT, ST PAUL’S & THE CATACOMBS

Based on a Wednesday schedule, we will return to St Peter’s Square this morning for a memorable Papal Audience with Pope Francis as we join with pilgrims from around the world. (Subject to the Pope’s presence in Rome.)

Journey this afternoon out to the majestic Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls . Originally consecrated in 324, the saint’s tomb is visible now under the Papal Altar. We will celebrate a wonderful Mass here as a special tribute to the Church’s greatest evangelist.

Continue then along the ancient Appian Way , the oldest road from Roman times to the ancient Catacombs for a memorable guided tour to marvel at these underground burial tunnels for Christians and Hebrews. On the way, drive by Domine Quo Vadis – the chapel that stands at the site where, according to tradition, St Peter met Christ when he fled from Rome to escape martyrdom.

DAY 11 MAJOR BASILICAS & FREE AFTERNOON

Today we visit the impressive St Mary Major Basilica , the largest Catholic Marian Church in Rome, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, which also contains a relic from the manger of the infant Jesus. Onwards to the Basilica of St John in Lateran (First Papal residence) and the adjacent Holy Stairs brought from Jerusalem to Rome in 326AD by St Helena (as a favourite of pilgrims, these steps may only be ascended on the knees). Visit the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (Holy Cross) with its extraordinary collection of relics from the Holy Land.

Our afternoon is free to discover more sights of Rome – perhaps throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain before strolling to the Piazza Navona to soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Indulge in a gelato or enjoy a coffee while absorbing and admiring the history of this ancient city. Strolling through the streets is like walking through the pages of a history book.

This evening we will celebrate our final night in Rome at L’Eau Vive Restaurant . This fabulous French Restaurant is run by Carmelite Missionary Nuns who will actually sing the Ave Maria to us between courses!

Rome overnight (BD )

Day 12 DEPART ROME

This morning, we farewell the Eternal City as our pilgrimage ends after breakfast. (B)

“Only heard of Medjugorje but could not imagine anything like it was!”

Check In with the Magnificat Guide at the Gate

When you arrive at the airport in Washington, Chicago, or Newark, Check In with the Magnificat guide at the gate before boarding the plane to Europe. This is VERY IMPORTANT.

First Things, First

WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR AIRLINE TICKETS, CHECK THEM FOR ACCURACY! CHECK THEM NOW!

We check your tickets, but it’s very wise for you to check them also.

  • Make sure your first, middle and last names match your passport.
  • Check the dates, times and departure/return U.S. city for accuracy.
  • Make a copy of your itinerary with flight information and leave it with your emergency contact(s) at home.
  • Give your emergency contact the Magnificat Tours phone number (480-695-2597). If anyone at home needs to reach you in case of an emergency, they can get a message to you by calling this number.

Passports / Visas

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PASSPORT IS VALID FOR SIX (6) MONTHS AFTER YOUR PLANNED RETURN TO THE U.S.

  • U.S. citizens need a valid U.S. passport that is valid for 6 months after your planned return date to the United States. If your passport will expire within 6 months of your return, obtain a new passport immediately.
  • U.S. citizens do not require a visa.
  • No shots or immunizations are required to travel to Medjugorje.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen , contact us at least 120 days prior to your departure date, so that we can work with you to help you obtain the necessary visas, vouchers and interviews with the Bosnian consulate.

KEEP YOUR PASSPORT WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES.

  • You will need your passport when you check-in at your home airport and at entry points into each country.
  • Carry your passport on your person at all times during the entire trip.
  • Make several copies of your passport and keep one in each of your checked and carry-on bags.
  • If you’re traveling with a companion, it’s a good idea to carry copies of each other’s passports.
  • Leave a copy of your passport at home with your emergency contact.

Packing / Luggage / Checking Your Bags

Pack lightly! We highly recommend that you:

  • Pack ONLY one CARRY-ON bag with a change of clothing, undergarments, toiletries and medicines that you will keep with you at all times. This becomes very important in the event that your checked baggage is lost or temporarily delayed. Keep this carry-on bag small to avoid issues with the airline allowing you to carry it on some of the smaller airplanes. YOUR CARRY-ON BAG CANNOT EXCEED 18 LBS.
  • CHECK ONLY one other bag with the remainder of your belongings. To avoid additional charges, we highly recommend that you travel with ONLY ONE CHECKED bag. To avoid additional charges, keep your checked bag under 50 lbs. Even if United Airlines allows you to leave the U.S. with two checked bags, YOU WILL BE CHARGED for the second bag by the Airline when you depart from Bosnia-Herz. for the U.S. YOUR CHECKED BAG CANNOT EXCEED 50 LBS.
  • Remember that you will be responsible for carrying your own bags… ; so pack lightly. Due to space limitations on the motorcoach and in the rooms in Medjugorje, you will be thankful that you packed lightly.
  • You will be provided two luggage tags for easier identification of your bags. It’s not a bad idea to put other identifying marks on your personal luggage… many people tie brightly colored ribbons to their handles.
  • A small backpack is also recommended and is much more practical than a purse. It will come in handy when you climb Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain, when attending the Apparition of Our Lady, when traveling by plane and motorcoach and when walking around in Medjugorje.

Check your bags through to your final destination

When you check-in at your originating U.S. airport, check your bags all the way through to your final destination.

Euros are the currency accepted throughout Europe. While you can use American dollars in Medjugorje, they much prefer the Euros. The airports in Europe will only accept Euros or credit cards.

AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO DEPARTURE, contact your local bank to buy Euros. Allow at least a week because most branch banks do not keep Euros on hand and it will take them a few days to obtain them from their central bank.

It's a good idea to travel with smaller currency amounts. Sometimes it's difficult for the stores, restaurants and taxis to make change for large bills. We recommend nothing larger than 20 Euro or $20 bills. Some of the shops have difficulty giving change in U.S dollars.

We highly recommend that you contact your credit card company and your bank before your departure to let them know that you will be out of the country and that you may exceed your normal spending patterns.

Keep it on you at all times

Keep your passport, airline tickets and money on you at all times!

Dress should be comfortable but appropriate for the many sacred places we will be visiting. Dress up clothing is not needed. Ideally, men and women should wear long pants. Women may prefer to wear skirts or dresses, but it’s not necessary. Jeans, slacks and nice jogging pants are acceptable. Tops should have sleeves and should not be revealing. If you’re not sure that what you want to wear is appropriate, err on the side of safety and wear something else.

The weather can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers is suggested. Typically, a short sleeved shirt or blouse is adequate during the day. But you should have long sleeved shirts and a jacket/coat for cooler days and evenings or for climbing the mountains. If you tend to get cold easily, you may want to take a lightweight scarf and gloves. If you are traveling during the winter months, you will want to bring appropriate outer clothing.

Tennis shoes or walking shoes are a must. Break them in well in advance of the trip. You may want to take an inexpensive pair of flip flops for walking around your room or for use in the showers.

Medjugorje Weather

The temperatures below are averages. Lows and highs can both be exceeded. We recommend dressing in layers to be prepared for weather fluctuations.

What to Bring

  • Shoes (walking or athletic)
  • Jacket/coat – for cooler or rainy days
  • Toiletries including shampoo, soap, washcloths (Do not assume that any personal items will be provided by your host home in Medjugorje)
  • Camera with extra film, memory cards, batteries
  • Adapter AND converter for hairdryers, electric razors, cameras
  • Alarm clock
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, chapstick)
  • Journal and pen
  • Rosary, prayer books, Bible
  • Extra Ziploc bags come in very handy
  • Backpack and/or Fanny pack
  • Passport wallet – type that hangs around your neck under your clothing, or
  • Money belt – type that is worn under your clothing
  • Light scarf and gloves (optional)
  • Neck pillow for flight and long bus rides
  • Snacks (breakfast bars, jerky, dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, candy)
  • Non-dairy creamer, sweetener for coffee (typically, the homes in Medjugorje only provide milk and sugar)
  • If you plan on using your cell phone while abroad, check with your phone provider to see if you need a SIM card or you may need to purchase a disposable phone that can be used in Europe.

Domestic flights typically do not serve meals. So make your own arrangements as you travel in the U.S.

The Airlines provide nice meals on the flight to Europe. Typically dinner is served shortly after we leave the U.S. and breakfast is served before we arrive in Europe.

There are restaurants in the European airport where you can treat yourself to something while we are laid over but the restaurants only accept Euros or credit cards. Just remember that our next meal will not be until we arrive in Medjugorje so, don’t get on the flight to Sarajevo or Dubrovnik with an empty stomach.

Typically, we make one stop during the three hour drive from Sarajevo, Split or Dubrovnik to Medjugorje to use the facilities and to grab a drink.

When we arrive in Medjugorje, typically about 6:00 pm, your host family will have a family style dinner waiting for you.

Each day, breakfast and a late lunch will be provided by your host family in Medjugorje. Lunch is usually early afternoon and is a big meal. There are small grocery markets and many restaurants in Medjugorje if you want to eat a 3rd meal each day.

What to Expect in Medjugorje

Hill of Apparitions

Remember you are on pilgrimage and you are in a foreign country. Please do not expect all the amenities that you are accustomed to at home. Accept the differences in a spirit of humility and remember that you are a visitor and that this is their home and this is how they live everyday. You may not always have hot water, your bed will be simple, you will be provided one towel for the week, and the electricity may malfunction. Be gracious and offer any suffering to our Lord and know that we will never be asked to suffer as He suffered for us.

We will be traveling as a large group. Please practice common courtesy and respect for your host family and fellow pilgrims. Be on time for meals, tours and departures . We will not hold a bus or delay any tours, so please plan accordingly and always be on time. If you miss a bus, you will be responsible for securing and paying for your own transportation.

Meals are served family style. There are no menus. The food is very good and there’s lots of it. Typically salad, soup, meat, vegetable, potato or rice and fruit or dessert are served at dinner. European breakfasts are different and many times include bread, butter, jams, cheeses and lunchmeats. Typically, only instant coffee is available. You can take your own coffee and coffee press if you want brewed coffee. If you use Sweet’n’Low or Equal or Stevia or a favorite non-dairy creamer, bring your own.

St. James Church in Medjugorje

Tap water is safe to drink. Be on time for meals served by the host family . If you miss a meal or are late, you will need to purchase your own meal in town. If you are going to be absent for breakfast or dinner, let your host family know ahead of time so that they can adjust their meal-planning and not waste food.

We do not know what our schedule will be in Medjugorje until we arrive, and then, we will only know the schedule for the next day. The tour guides, visionaries and priests are very good at scheduling all the events and Masses to accommodate all the pilgrims that arrive from many different lands, speaking many different languages all with very short notice of who, how many and what language will be present in Medjugorje on any given day.

Miki Musa will be our guide. He will arrange for us to be present for the Apparition and to have a private talk with Mirjana. We will climb Apparition Hill as a group with Miki. If weather permits, we will climb Cross Mountain as a group. Holy Mass will be celebrated in English every day. Miki will also let us know what the program is for each evening at St. James’ church.

You do not have to do everything the group does while in Medjugorje . This is your personal pilgrimage and if you need to seek quiet and alone time, by all means, do so. Ask your Magnificat escort about the Adoration chapel and other quiet spots that you can seek out on your own.

We typically have at least one priest traveling with us. We ask the priest to celebrate Mass in the chapel at the Vienna airport during our layover. When you disembark from the plane in Europe, please wait for the Magnificat escort at your gate. We will go straight from the gate to the chapel for Holy Mass.

We also ask the priest to be available for any of our pilgrims that wish to take advantage of the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation while in Medjugorje. Other than that, we ask that you respect the priest’s privacy and allow him to enjoy his own pilgrimage . He is one of the Shepherd’s that Our Lady asks us to pray for so, please include him in your prayers and allow Our Lady and her Son to minister to him while he is in Medjugorje. Let the priest initiate any planning re: spending free time with him.

Additional Expenses in Medjugorje

If the weather cooperates, you can walk through the fields between your host home and St. James. If you prefer, taxis are available and cost $8 each way. Typically, you can find another pilgrim or two to share the ride with you and split the cost. Plan on making at least 2 trips between the host home and St. James each day. One for morning Mass and one for the evening program.

There will be a DVD video and a group photo available for purchase. The video typically costs $30 and the group photo is $8. Breakfast and dinner are provided by your host family, but you are responsible for any additional meals or snacks you might want.

Tips for the host family and the guide are included in the cost of the trip to Medjugorje . Obviously, if you want to contribute an additional amount, it is very much appreciated by the families. You may also want to contribute to St. James at the collections at Holy Mass. This is purely voluntary.

And obviously, you should budget for any religious items that you want to purchase and have blessed while you are in Medjugorje. You will want to purchase your religious items before the Apparition because Our Lady will provide her motherly blessing of all pilgrims and religious articles during the Apparition. We will also ask our priest to bless all of us and our religious articles on the motorcoach as we depart from Medjugorje.

Medjugorje Pilgrimage – Everything You Need To Know

tour a medjugorje

In the realm of religious journeys, the Medjugorje pilgrimage beckons believers, drawing them into a sacred quest for profound encounters through the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Pilgrims from all over the world are drawn to Medjugorje seeking spiritual experiences, divine connection, and the serene atmosphere, fostering a sense of peace and renewal. In fact, over the last forty-two years, Medjugorje has drawn tens of millions of visitors, attracted by the reported occurrences of daily healings, miracles, and wondrous signs.

Medjugorje (meh-jew-gore-e-yeh), meaning between the mountains, lies in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This was a quiet Yugoslav town until 1981 when the Virgin Mary appeared to six local children.

tour a medjugorje

The sudden influx of pilgrims raised concerns among Yugoslav authorities, skeptical of potential instability in their Socialist stronghold. Despite the initial skepticism and historical wariness of Catholicism by the atheist Communist ruling party , the town eventually evolved into a tourist hub during Yugoslavia’s mid-80s economic crisis.

Communist authorities in Yugoslavia, threatened by the Medjugorje apparitions, took concrete actions against supporters. As a result, the State Security Service was used to physically attack visitors, intercept communications, issue threats, and fabricate false dossiers.

tour a medjugorje

Those aligned with the visionaries, including the Franciscan monk Jozo Zovko , the priest and observer of the Medjugorje events, faced persecution. These physical measures exemplify the regime’s attempts to suppress what they considered a counter-revolutionary threat to their political control.

Nevertheless, the reported apparitions have continued for many years, making a Medjugorje pilgrimage an important calling for believers seeking spiritual experiences and guidance. Even during the Bosnian war in the 1990s, the continuous flow of Catholic pilgrims aided the area’s rapid post-war recovery.

In the quiet corners of this Bosnian town, the faithful find respite and renewal. Sunsets over the hills become a canvas for contemplation, and the whispers of the wind seem to carry the echoes of prayers offered with fervent hearts. Medjugorje, with its mystical aura and sacred narratives, continues to weave a tapestry of spirituality that resonates far beyond its borders.

Medjugorje’s Mystical Marvel

Located in the picturesque landscapes of southern Bosnia, near the border of Croatia, Medjugorje has ascended to prominence due to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The ethereal story began on Wednesday, June 24, 1981, the feast of St. John the Baptist, when five children and one adult claimed to have encountered the Blessed Mother. They were:

  • Ivan Ivanković, 20
  • Ivan Dragićević, 16*
  • Vicka Ivanković, 16*
  • Mirjana Dragićević, 16*
  • Ivanka Ivanković, 15*
  • Milka Pavlović, 12

* Current Medjugorje visionaries. Ivan Ivanković (1) and Milka Pavlović (6) never witness further apparitions.

They observe an ethereal figure in the heavens—a radiant and lovely young woman cradling a child. Instantly recognizing the apparition as the Virgin Mary, they comprehend, even though she remains silent and only signals them to approach.

tour a medjugorje

Gripped by fear, they hastily flee. Upon returning home, they share the encounter with family members but they are apprehensive of potential repercussions (considering the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia’s official atheistic stance), and instruct them to remain silent.

Second Apparition

On the following day, Thursday, June 25, 1981, four of the youngsters felt a compelling inner calling to return to the same location where they had encountered the radiant presence. By then, word had spread through half the village about the events of the previous day, prompting many villagers to gather and observe.

This time, the four members* along with Marija Pavlović, 16, Milka’s older sister, and the 10-year-old Jakov Čolo bravely confronted the beautiful lady in the sky. This time, however, she was not holding a child.

tour a medjugorje

Responding to Our Lady’s signal, the six young visionaries swiftly ascend Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) amid rocks and brambles, unharmed and feeling mysteriously transported. Once again, six children witnessed the luminosity and approached the figure in a radiant silver-gray gown, a white veil, and a crown of twelve stars. Strangely, the village residents couldn’t perceive the apparition.

It was on that second day that the woman spoke to them for the first time. She said to the children:

“Be not afraid. I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God.” – Our Lady

After engaging briefly in gentle conversation, Our Lady promised to return after praying with them.

Third Apparition

On the evening of Friday, June 26, 1981, over 1,000 people assembled, drawn by a radiant glow. Acting on the counsel of some elders, Vicka decided to test the apparition by throwing a bottle of holy water, expressing, “If you are the Madonna, stay with us; if not, go away!” with conviction. In response to Mirjana’s direct inquiry, “What’s your name?” Our Lady, for the first time, gently smiled and uttered the words:

I am the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of Peace. – Our Lady

Following the first three apparitions, the six Medjugorje visionaries faced police interrogations, medical exams, and skepticism from authorities and the local priest. Despite attempts to limit access, a crowd of 15,000 witnessed an Apparition on June 28.

On June 29, the visionaries underwent psychiatric examinations but were declared sane. The Virgin Mary continued to appear, emphasizing prayer and faith.

tour a medjugorje

Authorities tried to disrupt the visionaries’ routine on June 30, but an inner urgency led them back to the Apparition site. Despite police restrictions, divine phenomena persisted.

July 1 brought threats to the visionaries’ parents, and three girls faced a deceptive abduction. The divine events attracted increasing attention and sparked miraculous healing.

Medjugorje Visionaries

The Medjugorje visionaries experienced daily apparitions of the Virgin Mary beginning in 1981. Despite skepticism and challenges, they conveyed messages and secrets, drawing global attention to the Bosnian town.

Visionaries described the apparitions as regular, occurring at a set time each day or on specific dates—they continued for many years and continue to this day for some of them. In short, the messages conveyed are centered around faith, prayer, peace, and conversion.

Status of Apparitions and Secrets

The details regarding the apparitions and the secrets disclosed to each visionary are outlined below.

  • Ivan Dragičević : He continues to receive daily apparitions, with Our Lady confiding nine secrets to him.
  • Vicka Ivanković: She continues to experience daily apparitions, with Our Lady entrusting her with nine secrets.
  • Mirjana Dragičević : Experiencing daily apparitions until December 25, 1982, Our Lady entrusted Mirjana with the 10th secret, specifying that henceforth, she would have an annual apparition on March 18. Starting from August 2, 1987, every second day of the month, Mirjana hears Our Lady’s voice inwardly and engages in prayer for nonbelievers.
  • Ivanka Ivanković : As the initial witness to Our Lady, she encountered daily apparitions until May 7, 1985. On that significant day, Our Lady entrusted to her the 10th secret and revealed that she would have an annual apparition on June 25, marking the anniversary of the apparitions, for the remainder of her life.
  • Marija Pavlović : She continues to have daily apparitions, serving as the conduit for Our Lady’s messages to the parish and the world. Initially, from March 1, 1984, to January 8, 1987, the message was conveyed every Thursday, and since January 1987, it occurs on every 25th of the month. Our Lady has entrusted her with nine secrets.
  • Jakov Colo : Experiencing daily apparitions from June 25, 1981, to September 12, 1998, on the latter date, Our Lady entrusted to him the 10th secret. She conveyed that for the remainder of his life, he would have an annual apparition on Christmas Day.

What Do They See and Hear?

Witnesses describe the visions with a sense of profound awe, recounting the gentle presence of Mary and the messages of faith, love, and peace that accompany these ethereal encounters. The town, once a tranquil haven, transformed into a spiritual epicenter, drawing pilgrims from every corner of the globe.

tour a medjugorje

Typically, Our Lady manifests her daily apparitions in Medjugorje around 6:40 p.m. or at 5:40 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time. However, there may be variations in the timing for specific visionaries due to travel or particular circumstances. For instance, during Ivan’s prayer groups on Monday and Friday nights, Our Lady reveals herself to him at 10:00 p.m.

During one unique experience, Vicka and Jakov had Our Lady physically transport them to heaven, hell, and purgatory at Jakov’s house, lasting around 20 minutes. Unlike them, the remaining visionaries witnessed visions of these realms, similar to watching a movie or peering out a window, with Mirjana and Ivanka opting not to witness hell.

The 10 Secrets

Through the apparitions, the six visionaries were informed by Our Lady of Medjugorje that she would reveal to them the 10 secrets. While the 10 Secrets are often discussed, there remains limited information about their details. Mirjana, one of the six visionaries, has been selected by Our Lady to bear the responsibility of assisting in the disclosure of the secrets.

tour a medjugorje

The 10 secrets of Medjugorje refer to a series of future events that were reportedly revealed by the Virgin Mary to the visionaries in Medjugorje. Overall, there is limited public knowledge about the secrets of Medjugorje.

The details of these secrets have not been disclosed publicly, as they are meant to unfold at appointed times in the future. The secrecy surrounding the 10 secrets adds an element of mystery and anticipation among believers, and their content remains unknown until the events themselves transpire or are revealed by the visionaries at the appropriate time.

What Do We Know About the 10 Secrets

Our Lady has specifically instructed the Medjugorje visionaries to maintain secrecy, even amongst themselves, regarding the 10 Secrets. Rather than dwelling on the secrets, the visionaries advocate for immediate conversion. Mirjana was entrusted by the Blessed Mother to reveal the secrets to the world through Fr. Petar Ljubicic .

tour a medjugorje

Secrets entrusted by Our Lady, once unveiled, are anticipated to spark widespread conversions globally. Also, the secrets, including chastisements, are foretold to unfold during the visionaries’ lifetimes. Among the visionaries, three possess all ten secrets, while the remaining three are privy to nine.

  • Ivan Dragičević – 9
  • Vicka Ivanković – 9
  • Mirjana Dragičević – 10
  • Ivanka Ivanković – 10
  • Marija Pavlović – 9
  • Jakov Colo – 10

Mirjana, Ivanka, and Jakov, three of the visionaries, hold all 10 secrets. For this reason, they no longer receive daily apparitions from Our Lady. Mirjana got the 10th secret in 1982, Ivanka in 1985, and Jakov in 1998. On the other hand, Ivan, Marija, and Vicka each possess nine secrets. Consequently, they continue to have daily apparitions from Our Lady, as of January 2024.

Third Secret Revealed

Released by the Vatican on June 26, 2000, the third secret of Medjugorje is linked to the events of Fatima. Our Lady conveyed that a lasting, indestructible, supernatural sign would appear on Apparition Hill. This manifestation will mark the conclusion of her apparitions at that location. The specifics of this sign were disclosed by the Blessed Virgin during the revelation of the third secret.

tour a medjugorje

Furthermore, the indestructible sign on Apparition Hill is intended for atheists. Our Lady emphasizes the urgency of conversion, cautioning that waiting for the sign is too late.

Seventh Secret

Our Lady revealed the seventh secret to Mirjana in Sarajevo. Disturbed by its content, Mirjana implored Our Lady for a way to alleviate the secret’s impact. Our Lady responded with a simple directive: “Pray.”

Troubled by it, Mirjana prayed intensely, rallying others to join. After eight months, Our Lady informed Mirjana that the seventh secret had been mitigated. This highlights the power of prayer and collective devotion in influencing the revealed secrets.

Ninth and 10th Secrets

The ninth and 10th secrets carry significant gravity, addressing chastisement for the world’s sins. Inevitably, punishment awaits, as the complete conversion of the entire world is not anticipated. While prayer and penance can mitigate the severity of the punishment, its complete elimination is not possible.

Undisclosed Secrets

Other undisclosed secrets, unique to each visionary, may involve both blessings and chastisements. Despite efforts, some events may be unavoidable.

Mirjana plays a role in revealing imminent events to Father Petar Ljubicic. Most importantly, she emphasizes urgent prayer, especially for non-believers and the youth. Once all six visionaries have received the complete set of 10 secrets, Our Lady will cease her daily appearances.

tour a medjugorje

The Three Warnings

Once Our Lady ceases her apparitions, three warnings will be issued to the world through earthly events. Mirjana, a witness to these warnings within her lifetime, will collaborate with the chosen priest. In this case, it’s Father Petar Ljubicic, who will pray and fast for seven days before each event.

Three days before each warning, Father Petar will publicly disclose the details. Following the first warning, the subsequent two will swiftly ensue, fostering a period of significant grace and conversion.

tour a medjugorje

Due to the speed at which the secrets unfold, urgent conversion is necessary. Following the manifestation of the permanent supernatural sign on Apparition Hill, those who remain unconverted will find themselves defenseless.

Mirjana, bearing witness to the imminent fulfillment of the Virgin’s predictions, passionately urges the world to expedite their conversion. She implores everyone to embrace God with open hearts and prepare for the events foretold. The urgency of this message underscores the significance of spiritual transformation in the face of anticipated events.

tour a medjugorje

Following the realization of the 10 Secrets, humanity is said to transform. It will transition from a period of conflict and rebellion to an era characterized by peace and spirituality.

Five Stones – Weapons to Fight Off Evil

Our Lady aims to reveal, through her messages, the true essence of Christianity and the route to peace. She emphasizes the reality of Satan and how he manipulates us for his destructive purposes. For instance, Satan targets love, peace, faith, family, and life. Similar to how God equipped David with five stones to conquer Goliath, Our Lady provides us with five stones or instruments to overcome Satan, they are:

  • Daily Prayer (specifically the Rosary)
  • Fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Holy Mass (Eucharist)
  • Daily Reading of the Bible
  • Monthly Confession

Walking Up Apparition Hill

Apparition Hill, where Our Lady first appeared in June 1981, is a sacred path leading from Bijakovići houses in Medjugorje. Along the rocky journey, bronze reliefs depict Rosary mysteries, with pilgrims often praying as they ascend. The hill, adorned with a large wooden cross, marks where visionary Marija Pavlović received the first apparition on June 26, 1981. Our Lady’s call for peace resounded here: “Peace, peace, peace!” A marble Queen of Peace statue stands at the original site, promising a future sign as part of the secrets. Placed in 2001, it mirrors the church’s statue.

For us, walking up Apparition Hill was a significant part of the pilgrimage experience. The hill is not particularly steep, but the terrain can be uneven, with rocky paths and dirt trails. Pilgrims often engage in prayer, reflection, and recitation of the Rosary while ascending.

tour a medjugorje

The duration of the walk depends on various factors, including the starting point and the pilgrim’s pace. For instance, from St. James the Greater Church it’s 1.5 miles to the base of the hill. Unless you have a rental car or enjoy hiking, it’s advisable to opt for a taxi, especially in the summer heat.

On average, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the apparition site from the bottom of the hill. Some pilgrims find the journey spiritually enriching, considering it a time for personal reflection and connection with their faith, and for this reason, take their time going up and down.

Going Barefoot

Walking barefoot up Apparition Hill is a practice rooted in religious and spiritual traditions. Pilgrims believe that by walking barefoot, they are offering a physical sacrifice as a symbol of humility and penance. It is considered a way to unite with the suffering of Christ and to express devotion and sincerity in prayer.

tour a medjugorje

The practice is not obligatory, but many pilgrims choose to walk barefoot voluntarily. The journey up the hill is often accompanied by prayers, reflections, and a sense of solidarity with other pilgrims. Also, the act of walking barefoot is believed to enhance the spiritual experience and bring a deeper connection to the sacred site.

Krizevac – Cross Mountain

Cross Mountain, standing tall in Medjugorje, is approximately 1,706 feet (520 meters) high and is adorned with a 27-foot (8.5 meter) cross erected in 1934. Positioned at a distance of 1.2 miles from Apparition Hill and 1.0 miles from the Church of St. James the Greater, this sacred site offers pilgrims a penitential climb, often taken barefoot, symbolizing sacrifice and devotion.

Pilgrims ascend seeking reflection, healing, and peace, guided by Our Lady’s messages emphasizing its significance. The climb becomes a transformative journey, drawing pilgrims closer to Christ in the spiritually rich landscape of Medjugorje.

Located at the base of Apparition Mountain, the Blue Cross marks where Our Lady appeared to visionaries seeking refuge from Communist authorities. Initially, Ivan’s prayer group gathered here during the early 1990s, drawing immense crowds. Due to the surging pilgrims, a second Blue Cross was added, designating the actual apparition site.

tour a medjugorje

Amid tranquil surroundings, pilgrims experience Our Lady’s peace. Apparitions, held when Ivan visits from April to September on Monday and Friday evenings, foster spiritual moments. Additionally, Mirjana’s monthly apparitions for non-believers unfold at the Blue Cross.

This serene locale, adorned with two blue crosses, embodies the enduring essence of Medjugorje’s spiritual encounters. In the end, the question on everyone’s mind is, why blue? The choice of blue was purely accidental—Ivan stumbled upon leftover blue paint in his father’s shed, giving the cross its distinctive blue hue.

Finally, consider watching “ Gospa ” before your Medjugorje pilgrimage. It’s a film that tells the story of the events in Medjugorje, focusing on the experiences of the local Franciscan priest, Father Jozo Zovko.

The movie explores the challenges faced by the community during the reported apparitions. Martin Sheen portrays Father Jozo Zovko, highlighting the spiritual and political complexities of the time. The film delves into the impact of the apparitions on the local people and the Catholic Church.

Catholic Church’s Official Position

It’s important to note that the Catholic Church has not officially authenticated these events. For example, in a meeting in Zadar on April 10, 1991, the Bishops’ Conference of Yugoslavia made it clear that, based on their studies, they couldn’t confirm the occurrence of supernatural apparitions and revelations.

On March 26, 2010, a formal commission led by Cardinal Camillo Ruini began investigating Medjugorje. In late summer 2016, the Ruini report’s recommendations were sent to Pope Francis by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), formerly the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The report suggested placing Medjugorje under Vatican control, allowing organized pilgrimages, declaring it a pontifical shrine, and authenticating the first apparitions.

tour a medjugorje

In May 2018, Archbishop Henryk Hoser was assigned to oversee Medjugorje, placing it under Vatican control. In May 2019, gained recognition as a sanctioned pilgrimage site, awaiting Vatican certification of the 1981 apparitions’ authenticity. Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Msgr. Aldo Cavalli in November 2021 to continue the special role for Medjugorje after Archbishop Hoser’s death.

Currently, the Yugoslav Bishops Conference in 1991 determined that it’s unclear if the events are of supernatural origin. This decision remains in effect until the DDF finalizes its findings. The Holy See still acknowledges and respects this judgment.

While the Catholic Church hasn’t authenticated the apparitions, it doesn’t lessen the importance of the Medjugorje pilgrimage or the events that unfolded there. The recounting of events involving the six children attests to their truthfulness and challenges any skepticism about their accounts.

This nine (9) day Catholic Pilgrimage to Lourdes & Medjugorje visits two of the most sacred sites in the world where Apparitions of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, occurred. Lourdes is a special place of grace visited by millions each year where Pilgrims attend Mass, go to Confession, and Pray the Rosary in nightly candlelight processions. Medjugorje is a peace place of prayer that has been visited by 40 million people to date.

Begin in Lourdes, France where, in 1858, St. Bernadette witnessed eighteen apparitions of Our Lady who revealed herself as the “Immaculate Conception”. In one of these miracles, Our Lady asked Bernadette to drink from the spring as an act of penance which resulted in the spring’s muddy water turning clear. Since then, Pilgrims have been visiting the beautiful Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes seeking healing and conversion from the Lourdes baths. Almost every part of the Shrine is accessible by wheelchair.

Continue to Medjugorje, the site of the 1981 Marian Apparitions. On June 24th 1981 Six children witnessed the Blessed Virgin Mary on what is now known as Apparition Hill. The apparition had a message of peace for the world, as well as a call to conversion, prayer and fasting. She appeared to them with an infant in their arms and confided ten secrets to the children.. In 2018 Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Henryk Hoser the “Apostolic Visitor” to Medjugorje in steps to officially recognize Medjugorje as a sacred Catholic site. On May 13, 2019 the Holy See officially announced that Dioceses and Parishes throughout the world are now authorized to organize Pilgrimages to Medjugorje.

Our Lady first appeared to Bernadette in 1858, and announced herself as “The Immaculate Conception”, near the Grotto of Massabielle. During the first two apparitions, little Bernadette prayed the Rosary with Our Lady and left without any exchange of words. During the following apparitions, Our Lady emphasized God’s love for us, penance, and the necessity of performing acts of penance for sinners. Throughout your time in Lourdes, you will have the opportunity to attend Mass at the Grotto, where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette; watch a video presentation that explains in detail, the story of Lourdes;  participate with the gesture of the miraculous spring ; Wash your hands, wash your face and drink the water. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to experience Christ’s unconditional love, as you meditate upon the “life-size” Stations of the Cross that overlook the Grotto of Massabielle. In Lourdes, you will walk in and meditate upon the footsteps of St. Bernadette. Your group will have the opportunity to see Boly Mill, the birthplace of St. Bernadette, and the “Cachot,” an abandoned prison where Bernadette’s impoverished family lived. Each evening following dinner, you will have an opportunity to attend the candlelight procession and the Rosary, before a restful overnight.

Days 6 - 8: Experiencing Medjugorje

The most beautiful features of Medjugorje are its simplicity and peace. While in Medjugorje, you may experience your faith grow, and share in the faith journey of pilgrims from all over the world. A local guide will accompany your group throughout your stay in the village.

Some activities that will accompany you in your spiritual journey:

Attend Daily Mass: Each morning at 10:00 AM, your group will assemble at St. James Church for Mass (English-Speaking). At the end of each Mass, regardless of language, there is a blessing of the religious articles that you have with you.

On Feast Days and Sundays: English Mass is at 12 PM.

Climb Apparition Hill: This mountainous hill is where the visionaries first encountered Our Lady. At the base of this hill is a Blue Cross, where it is said Our Lady appeared to the children while they hid from the communist police in the early days of the alleged apparitions. While climbing, your group is invited to recite the Rosary, pausing five times for each decade of the Rosary. At the top of the hill, you will witness the exact location of the first alleged apparition of Our Lady to the visionaries, and enjoy private time for prayer.

Climb Mt. Krizevac (Cross Mountain): In 1933, the villagers built a 30′ high cross atop a mountain to commemorate Jesus’ passion and death on the cross. Your group will have the opportunity to climb this mountain, and venerate that very cross. While climbing, your group is invited to pray the Stations of the Cross (to meditate on Jesus’ suffering Road to Calvary), pausing fifteen times for each Station.

Apparitions: Each evening at 5 PM or 6 PM (depending on daylight savings time), your group will join the villagers and fellow pilgrims of Medjugorje in saying the Rosary, as all anxiously await the alleged arrival of Our Lady to the visionaries. Following the apparition, at 5:40 PM (6:40 PM during Daylight Savings Time), feel free to stay at St. James Church and attend the Croatian Mass. Following the Croatian Mass, there is a Blessing of the Sick.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Our Lady has always called us to be close to her Son. For this, you will have the opportunity to adore the Blessed Sacrament at the altar outside of St. James Church. Adoration is held on Tuesdays and Saturdays; Veneration of the Cross is held on Fridays inside the church. Additionally, there is an Adoration Chapel on the grounds of St. James Church, where Adoration is held in the afternoon hours.

Visit the Community of Cenacolo: Pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit the Community of Cenacolo, founded by Sr. Elvira Petrozzi, for young men and women who have taken the wrong path and are on the road to recovery. You will be able to listen to their inspirational testimonies about their journeys back to Jesus Christ.

Prayer at the Statue of the Risen Christ: The bronze statue of the Risen Christ is located on the grounds of St. James Church. Many pilgrims sit and pray on the benches surrounding this peaceful statue. This statue miraculously seeps droplets of water at all times of the day, out of Christ’s right knee.

Day 9: Return Home

Cardinal Fernández: With new norms it will be easier to decide on Medjugorje

By L’Osservatore Romano

"Regarding Medjugorje, no conclusion has been reached yet, but with these guidelines, we believe it will be easier to proceed and reach a conclusion," said Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, during the press conference presenting the new norms for discerning presumed supernatural phenomena. Responding to a journalist's question, he added that "for other cases that have been present at the Dicastery for many years, these guidelines will make it easier to arrive at a prudential conclusion." He continued, "In many cases, these phenomena have grown well and normally. Sometimes a phenomenon can be easily managed without issues, producing positive outcomes: this has happened in most sanctuaries. Many frequently visited sanctuaries by the faithful originated from a similar experience. There has never been a declaration, neither from the bishop nor the Dicastery, and they have grown normally without problems as popular devotion." In short, the Cardinal explained, "a beautiful phenomenon can grow" without requiring "a declaration of supernatural origin. In the cases of Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe, their enormous growth did not depend on a declaration of supernatural origin."

To a second question on the same topic, the Cardinal replied: "Regarding Medjugorje, we'll see. For example, I haven't read the material available at the Dicastery, I know some details, but we need to study to reach a conclusion with these new norms. Keep in mind that a phenomenon can be considered good, not dangerous at the origin, but it may have some issues in its later development. Therefore, sometimes a declaration needs to clarify these different stages: that’s a distinction we need to consider. And then, suppose there was a green light, a 'nihil obstat,' we might also need to clarify that some details should not be taken seriously. If I remember correctly, the Madonna there was giving orders, setting the schedule, the place, what the bishop should do, etc. That needs to be clarified."

The Medjugorje Case

The voices and testimonies of the devout people of the Gospa—the Lady, the Madonna in Croatian—are the strongest narrative, enduring for almost 43 years, of the "Medjugorje phenomenon." Until June 24, 1981, the name of this small village in Bosnia and Herzegovina (then in Communist Yugoslavia), in the diocese of Mostar-Duvno, was known only to those living in the region. Today it is a spiritual reference point, as well as a physical pilgrimage destination, for many people.

Two girls, aged 15 and 16, Ivanka Ivanković and Mirjana Dragičević, reported seeing a female figure on a small cloud while walking on a rocky hill called Podbrdo at 4 pm on June 24, 1981. Shortly after, Vicka Ivanković, Ivanka’s cousin, joined them. All three claimed to have seen the mysterious figure again, this time with a child in her arms, which they immediately identified as the Virgin Mary. Ivan Dragičević, Jakov Čolo, and Marija Pavlović were the other three young people who formed the group known as the "visionaries." The six youths spoke of apparitions of Mary, who introduced herself as the "Queen of Peace" with a message fundamentally calling for reconciliation and conversion.

From that afternoon and those accounts—on a remote piece of land soon to experience a bloody war—a story began that has left a mark on the life of the Church, reaching millions of people in various ways: through conversions, with long lines at confessionals and extraordinary participation in Eucharistic adorations, as well as through strong scepticism and staunch opposition.

In response to the growing experiences related to Medjugorje, in 1991, the bishops of Yugoslavia stated in the so-called "Zara Declaration" that, based on investigations conducted up to that point, it was not possible to affirm that these were apparitions and supernatural phenomena.

International Commission of Inquiry

To clarify the facts of Medjugorje, Pope Benedict XVI established an International Commission of Inquiry on March 17, 2010, within the then Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Commission, presided over by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, collected and examined "all the material" related to the issue over 17 meetings and presented a detailed report to the Pope, including recommendations on "the supernatural nature or not" of the apparitions, and suggesting the most appropriate pastoral solutions. The Commission reviewed all documentation available in the Vatican, at the Medjugorje parish, and in the archives of the former Yugoslavia's secret services. They interviewed the alleged "visionaries" and witnesses and conducted an on-site inspection in Medjugorje in April 2012. This work continued for almost four years, concluding on January 17, 2014, when the final report was delivered to Pope Francis.

Regarding Medjugorje, during a press conference on the plane returning from the apostolic trip to Fatima on May 13, 2017, Pope Francis reminded that "all apparitions or presumed apparitions belong to the private sphere, they are not part of the Church's public ordinary Magisterium." He specifically referenced the Commission of Inquiry's work, distinguishing three aspects: "Regarding the first apparitions, when [the 'visionaries'] were children, the report more or less says that further investigation is needed. About the presumed current apparitions, the report has its doubts," and "thirdly," the Pope noted, "the core of the Ruini report: the spiritual fact, the pastoral fact, people who go there and convert, people who encounter God, who change their lives. For this, there is no magic wand, and this spiritual-pastoral fact cannot be denied."

The Appointment of Archbishop Hoser

With this understanding, the Pope decided on February 11, 2017, to assign Polish Archbishop Henryk Hoser the mission of "special envoy of the Holy See" to "gain deeper knowledge of the pastoral situation" in Medjugorje and, "especially, the needs of the faithful who go there in pilgrimage" to "suggest possible pastoral initiatives for the future." This mission was of an "exclusively pastoral" nature.

On May 31, 2018, without addressing the specific issues related to the presumed apparitions, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Hoser as Apostolic Visitor with a special character for the parish of Medjugorje, for an indefinite period and at the Holy See's discretion. This role was also "exclusively pastoral," in continuity with the mission of the Holy See's special envoy that he had completed. "The mission of the apostolic visitor," the Holy See's Press Office announced, "aims to ensure a stable and continuous accompaniment of the parish community of Medjugorje and the faithful who go there in pilgrimage, whose needs require particular attention."

Pilgrims to Medjugorje to encounter Christ and His Mother

In an interview with Vatican News, Archbishop Hoser explained that pilgrims from around the world come to Medjugorje "to encounter Christ and His Mother." He emphasized that "the Marian path is the most certain and safest" because it leads to Jesus. In Medjugorje, the faithful focus on the Holy Mass, the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and frequent participation in the Sacrament of Penance. For the Archbishop, this constituted a truly "Christocentric" worship, lived in closeness to the Virgin Mary, venerated with the title of "Queen of Peace."

Pope Francis authorizes pilgrimages

Continuing in this vein, on May 12, 2019, Archbishop Hoser and the Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, announced Pope Francis's decision to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, which can now be officially organized by dioceses and parishes and no longer take place only in a "private" form as previously indicated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On this matter, the then interim director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, clarified that the Pope's authorization should be accompanied by the caution "to avoid that these pilgrimages are interpreted as an authentication of the known events, which still require examination by the Church. Therefore, it is to be avoided that such pilgrimages create confusion or ambiguity from a doctrinal point of view. This also applies to pastors of any rank who intend to go to Medjugorje and celebrate or concelebrate there in a solemn manner." Gisotti also pointed out that "considering the significant flow of people and the abundant fruits of grace that have sprung from it, this provision falls within the particular pastoral attention that the Holy Father has intended to give to this reality, aimed at fostering and promoting the fruits of good." Thus, the apostolic visitor "will have greater ease in establishing relations with the priests in charge of organizing pilgrimages to Medjugorje, as reliable and well-prepared persons, offering them information and guidelines to conduct these pilgrimages fruitfully."

Aldo Cavalli, New Apostolic Visitor

On November 27, 2021, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Aldo Cavalli as the successor to Archbishop Hoser—who passed away on August 13—the new Apostolic Visitor, responsible for the pastoral care of the pilgrims travelling to Medjugorje.
