Visitor and tourism services

Ranger guiding tourists

The Northern Territory is home to some of the most unique and spectacular landscapes in the world, including Litchfield National Park, Nitmiluk National Park and Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, and the vast expanses of the Territory. As a result, the NT’s parks and reserves are the pillar of the tourism industry, and visitor and tourism services within parks and wildlife play an essential role in ensuring visitors have an unforgettable experience while also protecting and preserving the natural environment.

As a member of the visitor and tourism services team within parks and wildlife, you would have the opportunity to work in a variety of roles, from park rangers and tour guides to campsite managers and visitor centre staff. You might find yourself leading tours through ancient rock art galleries, taking visitors on guided hikes through rugged bushland, or sharing stories and cultural knowledge with visitors at a cultural centre.

A career in visitor and tourism services within parks and wildlife is perfect for those who are passionate about the natural environment and are dedicated to preserving it for future generations. It's also an excellent opportunity for those who love working with people, as you'll be interacting with visitors from all over the world and sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with them, including with private industry to develop new, eco-friendly business and offerings on the park estate.

Working in visitor and tourism services within parks and wildlife can also provide a unique and fulfilling career path. You might start out as a tour guide or ranger and work your way up to management roles, or you might choose to specialise in a particular area such as cultural tourism or wildlife conservation.

In terms of qualifications, a degree or diploma in tourism, environmental science, or a related field is often desirable, although relevant experience and a passion for the job can be just as important.

Overall, a career in visitor and tourism services within parks and wildlife in the Northern Territory offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to work in some of the most stunning and culturally significant landscapes in the world, while also contributing to the preservation and protection of these special places for future generations.

‘Get paid to do this’ Working Holiday Maker Campaign

Get Paid to do this

A priority for Tourism NT is attracting working holiday makers (WHM) to the Northern Territory to fulfil hospitality and tourism jobs, as well as to entice them to live and travel through the regions of the NT. Attracting this target market to the NT allows jobs to be filled and contributes significantly to the economic impact of local businesses across the Territory.

The campaign

The WHM campaign, Get Paid to do this , is an extension of last year’s successful ‘Get Paid’ campaign, targeting newly arrived backpackers (18-35 years) that are already in Australia. The aim of this campaign is to showcase the NT as the ultimate Aussie working holiday experience… It’s the adventure of a lifetime that you get paid for. This campaign will run from 19 March – 31 July 2024.

Capturing the essence of the NT, the messaging will highlight the freedom and job flexibility the Territory provides, from our stunning landscapes and wide open spaces, to epic parties and festivals, to outback adventures, traditional Aboriginal art and nature-based tourism activities.

The ‘Get Paid’ campaign will utilise media, including digital video and static content, to speak to the target audience across youth focused social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Reddit.

The campaign will be further supported via:

  • Encouraging job signups via WorkerConnect - Jobs in the Northern Territory;
  • PR activity and famil to generate destination-focused content to promote and raise awareness of the NT; and
  • Conversion partnership with Backpacker Deals with up to 20% off NT experiences.

Visit  www.northernterritory.com/getpaid  for more information.

WorkerConnect – Jobs in the Northern Territory talent pool

Building our workforce and gearing up for the Territory’s peak season is a key priority.

The NT Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade has also implemented a talent pool that allows Territory businesses to load their jobs, and search for workers that have loaded their CV to the system.

Advertising your job is a great way to get noticed in preparation for our peak tourism season – and now is a great time to begin this process.

How businesses can get involved

  • List your job vacancy on WorkerConnect - Jobs in the Northern Territory . This is a job talent pool platform where Territory employers can find job seekers by registering your businesses details and job vacancies.
  • Hospitality NT members can leverage the campaign by submitting job vacancies to their association and registering the vacancy on WorkerConnect - Jobs in the Northern Territory.
  • Ensure that your business’ ATDW listing is up to date and live.

There is no cost for businesses to list their vacancy with WorkerConnect - Jobs in the Northern Territory .

For more information

‘Get Paid to do this’ will target newly arrived backpackers that are already in Australia, while NT Backpacking Academy targets potential WHM based in the UK and Germany to entice them to head to Australia’s Northern Territory for the quintessential Aussie backpacking adventure.
