Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre

Visitor information centres are staffed by friendly, professional and trained people with extensive local knowledge.

Snowy Region Visitor Centre is conveniently located on Kosciuszko Road in Jindabyne.

Jindabyne is located in the centre of the Snowy Mountains, situated around Lake Jindabyne. The resort town offers a range of accommodation, restaurants, cafes, shops, activities and attractions.

The Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre provides information on Kosciuszko National Park and the region. This includes an interpretative display area and an extensive range of brochures covering many attractions, activities and points of interest. The centre also houses a licensed café and a 180 seat cinema showing the free educational films as well as the latest movie releases on the big screen.

Kosciuszko National Park spoils you with snow sports, walks and mountain biking in the Snowy Mountains. Go camping, explore caves, climb Australia’s highest mountain, or stay in heritage accommodation.

From  Jindabyne  to  Tumut , NSW’s largest national park will keep you busy for a weekend or for weeks. Ski or snowboard the highest runs in the country at  Thredbo  and  Perisher . The Snowy Region Visitor Centre is a welcome stop on the drive from Canberra before entering Kosciuszko National Park.

Staff can help with accommodation in or around the park, advice on the best things to see and do while you’re in the Snowy Mountains, and the latest conditions or closures. There are plenty of brochures to help you plan your Kosciuszko adventure, or buy books, gifts or souvenirs from the shop. You can also pick up a national parks pass that covers entry fees into Kosciuszko, as well as topographic maps and personal locator beacon hire.

Find out more about the park, the landscape, history, Aboriginal heritage and wildlife – spot a corroboree frog in the visitor centre’s display. There’s also a small gallery with local art exhibitions, the Parc Cafe for refreshments and a the Snowy Mountains Cinema for those staying in Jindabyne.

Visit the Snowy Region Visitor Centre to learn about the rich history of the area. The Jindabyne Dam is part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme and detailed information is signposted around the area. To warm up after a long day on the slopes, visit the stunning Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery and try the range of schnapps and gin.

If you continue down the same road, you’ll find Thredbo Valley Horse Riding . You can imagine that you are Clancy of the overflow, exploring the rugged mountain ranges searching for the colt who got away.

Skiing & Snowboarding

To save you lugging carloads of gear across the country on your annual ski trip, hire everything you need once you get to town. Staff at the Shed will inspire you with their travel tales from ski resorts all over the world while they help you. The folks at BP Ski Hire can help with snow chains and also sell affordable accessories. The Base Ski and Snowboard Centre in town can sell you lift tickets and advise you on the best runs while you’re organising your board hire.

Bushwalking & Hiking

Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s tallest mountain at 2228 metres, attracts hikers in every season. The summit walk is accessible only on foot, ensuring it is a pristine habitat for the native wildlife. The 18.6 km track starts and finishes at Charlotte’s Pass and takes between 6 and 8 hours. The shorter walk is only 9km and is relatively easy.

There are a number of points near Jindabyne where serious hikers can join in to the Australian Alps walking track which stretches across three states; from Walhalla, in Victoria, through the snowy mountains and across to the ACT. This challenging 655km walk showcases Australia’s magnificent alpine environments.

The region is teeming with bush walks and hiking trails. Up to date information on track closures and warnings is available on the Alpine National Park’s website. Remember to notify rangers of your intentions to hike and camp in the region, especially if you are hoping to experience some off track walking and camping.

Museums & Galleries

The Kunama Snowy Mountains centre for the Arts is a state of the art gallery which showcases the works of painters, sculptors and authors. Landscape artist, Alan Grosvenor, showed his work here for the last forty years of his life and his work will remain as a permanent part of the exhibition.

The town of Cooma is a 45 minute drive from JIndabyne and home to a number of museums. For more art and culture, stop in at the Raglan Gallery. If you’re interested in seeing displays of information and artefacts from convict days until the present visit the Corrective Services Museum NSW.

Every season offers something marvellous for tourists in the alpine region. The winter snow sports are a drawcard, but when the snow thaws the wildflowers bloom and bushwalking season begins. By high summer, the Jindabyne Lake is awash with boats and water sports. Autumn is a peaceful time in the mountains where the days are still warm but the nights charmingly cool, allowing the lighting of the open fires which grace most properties in the town.

Autumn is a delight for visitors in Jindabyne and photographers flock here to capture the brilliant skies and the blossoming of gold that settles over the trees. As the weather cools then turns to winter, Jindabyne begins to attract the hard core snow lovers. The skiers, the boarders, the campers and the racers all tumble into town, brimming with energy and a zest for life that is fuelled by a love of carving up the slopes. While many say enjoying the aesthetic beauty of the lake is one of the best things to do in Jindabyne, others enjoy a range of activities. The lake is a great spot for birdwatching or a picnic. Popular summertime activities include fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and mountain biking along the Jindabyne biking trail.

Surrounded by a backdrop of the Snowy Mountains, there are ski resorts nearby in Thredbo and Perisher, making the area popular during winter as well.

Jindabyne Dam

About 2km outside of town, the Jindabyne Dam is used for generating hydropower. Built in 1967, this huge rockfill embankment dam is situated on the Snowy River. Jindabyne river receives its water from this dam. 

This is a nice spot for enjoying sunsets. There is a walking path where you can stroll around and enjoy the serene view. If you time it right, you may get the chance to see the water being released. The giant spill fountain is quite a sight to enjoy.

Trout fishing is allowed, although boating is not. Unfortunately, there is no car park at the dam.

Get maps, information, brochures, and park entry passes at this guiding centre for Kosciuszko National Park.

The visitor’s centre remains open every day from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm except for Christmas. The Snowy Region Visitor Centre is located in town; therefore, outside the national park, and no entry fees are required.

Before hiking in a remote part of Kosciuszko National Park, go to the visitor centre to fill out an intention form and hire a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

Thredbo River picnic area

The Thredbo River Picnic area sits alongside the Thredbo River and is a great picnic spot with free barbeques. You can rest here on your way to the snowy region. There is an entry fee to the park.

Once you enter the park, you will experience the richness of green forest surrounding the place with the river next to it. Enjoy some barbeque and savour your meals on the picnic benches or the soft grass. 

If you get lucky enough, you can observe some platypus at the bank of the river. If you like to fish, try out your luck in the river. Remember to bring your own drinking or cooking water and note that there is limited mobile reception.

Walk the Pallaibo walking track

The Pallaibo walking track is a grade 3 one-way walk in Kosciuszko National Park that goes down to the lower end of Sawpit Creek from the Thredbo picnic area. This area is great for wildlife and nature photography. 

Thredbo River runs along this path, so fishing is another activity you can enjoy here. You can experience some snow during winter, but in summer extreme levels of heat, wind, and rain can be experienced. At one point, the river connects with a waterfall.

• Takayama Restaurant Bar Shop 19/2 Snowy River Ave (Located in Nuggets Crossing Shopping Centre ) This restaurant is unique in that it brings Japanese izakaya-style mountain food to Jindabyne. There are options for gluten-free and vegan-friendly meals. Some of their feature dishes include small plates like a salmon sushi roll, miso eggplant, grilled prawns and large plate dishes like katsu, tataki beef, and chargrilled salmon. 
• La Famiglia Shop 2/2 Snowy River Ave Located in Lakeview Plaza Motel They offer 17 different types of pizza each cooked in their traditional pizza oven. Also on the menu are Italian starters and mains as well as drinks. If you are craving Italian dishes, La Famiglia restaurant is a must.

Kosciuszko and Jindabyne

The Kosciuszko area of the Australian Alps contains the highest peaks of mainland Australia and is one of the better known and most spectacular parts of the Australian Alps. Encompassing much of the Kosciuszko National Park, the region boasts well-developed attractions and features.

Entry to the Kosciuszko area, including the alpine area and most of the NSW ski fields, is via the Kosciuszko Road and Alpine Way from the east, or the Alpine Way or Khancoban to Cabramurra Road from the west (summer only). You can drive to Thredbo Village, Smiggin Holes, Perisher and Guthega year-round and extend this to Charlotte’s Pass in non-winter periods. The Kosciuszko Alpine Way , with its numerous wayside stops, is the most popular route for those passing through the region.

Great walks

The Australian Alps Walking Track

You can join the Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) at several locations within the region. The AAWT can be easily accessed at Dead Horse Gap, on the Kosciuszko Walk, at Guthega and at Munyang Power Station.

The long-distance Australian Alps Walking Track stretches from Walhalla at the southern end of the Australian Alps and passes through Kosciuszko National Park on its way to the outskirts of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory.

For those looking for transport and advice about joining the Australian Alps Walking Track in the Kosciuszko area, charter transport is available from Corryong or Khancoban.

Walks in the Kosciuszko and Jindabyne region

Wild Walks has detailed walk information on over 50 walks in the Kosciuszko region with images, topographical maps, elevation details and track notes.

Some great walks of the Kosciuszko region include:

• Kosciuszko Walk – Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko (13 km return)
• Main Range Track (13 km)
• Porcupine Walk (5km)
• Summit Walk – Charlotte’s Pass to Mount Kosciuszko (18km return)
• Dead Horse Gap Track (5km)
• Thredbo River Track (4km)
• Bullock’s Track – via Bullock’s hut (4.5km)

VisitNSW.com has put together an itinerary for the Kosciuszko Alpine way . This fantastic route takes in some of Australia’s best alpine driving.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has some information on touring and 4WD trips throughout the region. You should check this site prior to any trip for up to date information on road closures and bushfires.

Mt Kosciuszko

Australia’s highest mainland peak, Mt Kosciuszko, is a major drawcard for visitors to the region.

Hiking to Kosciuszko’s peak at 2228 metres is one of the most inspiring single-day walks in the country. During summer, the summit can be reached from two starting points – the top of the chairlift at Thredbo or from the snow gums at Charlotte Pass. Both routes are equally scenic, traversing glacial lakes with breathtaking views of the valley and ranges that make up one of the world’s most dramatic ecosystems. Total vertical ascent is over 600 metres but well within the abilities of the average walker.

From the Snow Gums Boardwalk at Charlotte’s Pass, you will see many of Australia’s highest peaks with superb views of the Main Range. The walk traverses sub-alpine woodland on the Guthrie Range and signs identify the visible peaks. Mount Kosciuszko is visible from the first lookout.

Winter snow

The Kosciuszko region has some of Australia’s best-known ski resorts with thousands flocking each winter to Thredbo , Perisher and Charlotte Pass resorts. If you have never been before, visit snowymountains.com.au for a great checklist of things to think about before the trip.

Camping is a great activity within the Kosciuszko region with many sites along the Kosciuszko Alpine Way, such as:

• Leatherbarrel Creek
• Tom Groggin
• Thredbo Diggings
• Island Bend

A number of caravan parks and other accommodation in nearby towns are also available.

A variety of licensed operators can help you explore the Kosciuszko region, through walking, mountain biking, rafting, fly-fishing and winter trips into the back country.

The Snowy River and Khancoban Visitor Centres are great places to collect further information on the area, and Thredbo resort and Jindabyne township provide great bases for exploring.

Mountain biking and cycling

The Kosciuszko and Jindabyne region is rapidly becoming appreciated for the variety and extent of mountain biking and cycling opportunities. There are numerous cycling routes within the Kosciuszko National Park .

Downhill and cross-country mountain biking is incredibly popular in Thredbo – the location of several National Championship and National series events. Summer tourist activity in the picturesque alpine village is beginning to rival the winter as mountain biking becomes more popular.

The legendary Cannonball Run is one of Australia’s longest downhill courses at 4.2 kms. Catch your breath on the scenic chairlift ride back to the top, then do it all over again! Great cross-country loops include the Bridle Trail loop and the Golf Course loop. Make sure you stop over in Jindabyne on your way home too – there are new trails being developed all the time. Jindabyne was also the site for the 2002 international Red Bull Rampage downhill competition.

Road cycling is quite popular along mountain roads such as the Alpine Way, Kosciuszko Road and Snowy Mountains Highway – hit the climbs and you can pretend you are in the Tour de France!

Off-road touring opportunities abound along management trails within the park – explore for hundreds of kilometres in peace and safety, as these trails are closed to public vehicles.

The Cascade Fire Trail, starting near Dead Horse Gap is a popular mountain bike route enabling riders to reach Cascade Hut (18 km return). Also popular is Summit Road along the old Kosciuszko Rd from Charlotte Pass to Rawson Pass (followed by a short walk up to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko) – 16 km return.

Horse riding

Getting there and parking

Mount Kosciuszko Summit walk starts from Charlotte Pass, in the alpine precinct of Kosciuszko National Park. To get there:

• Drive along Kosciuszko Road from Jindabyne, following the signs to Perisher and Charlotte Pass
• Continue past the ski resorts of Smiggin Holes and Perisher Valley
• Charlotte Pass Village is around 40km from Jindabyne and will take you around 30mins to drive there
• The road between Perisher and Charlotte Pass is closed during winter

Road quality

All 2WD vehicles need to carry snow chains in winter, between June and October long weekends, on:

• Kosciuszko Road (to Perisher)
• Guthega Road
• Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin

Snow chains are recommended for all vehicles driving in the park, including 4WD and AWD, in the event of extreme weather. Read our snow driving in Kosciuszko tips.

Check the weather before you set out as the road to Charlotte Pass can become covered in snow and ice.

Parking is available near the trackhead on Kosciuszko Road. Bus parking is available. It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking may be limited.

Kosciuszko National Park provides a TrailRider all-terrain wheelchair for hire free of charge, from the Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre, in Jindabyne.

The TrailRider offers visitors with mobility restrictions more opportunity to experience our park with family and friends.

• Cycling, including fat bikes or snow bikes, is permitted only on the section of trail between Charlotte Pass and Rawson Pass.
• You can cross-country ski or snowshoe this trail in winter but there are no snow poles marking the route.
• Walking is not recommended in winter as this trail is snowbound.

Camp fires and solid fuel burners

No open/wood fires are permitted in alpine areas. Remember to bring a gas or fuel stove if you intend to cook.

Flying a drone for recreational purposes is prohibited in this area. Drones may affect public enjoyment, safety and privacy, interfere with park operations, or pose a threat to wildlife. See the Drones in Parks policy .

This area may be a declared Drone Exclusion Zone, or may be subject to Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) rules for flying near airports, aerodromes and helicopter landing sites. See CASA's Drone Flyer Rules .

Commercial filming and photography

Commercial filming or photography is prohibited without prior consent. You must apply for permission and contact the local office .

Pets and domestic animals (other than certified assistance animals) are not permitted. Find out which regional parks allow dog walking and see the pets in parks policy for more information.

NSW national parks are no smoking areas . The alpine resorts of Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass, Selwyn, Ski Rider and Kosciuszko Tourist Park are exempt, though some commercial and outdoor places within these resorts may have no smoking areas.
