2022 Official Tour de France program and race guide

* please note: this is the 2022 page -  see here for 2023 information ., the official uk edition of the tour de france program and race guide always sells out. it has all the info that you need to plan your tour de france trip, including stage times and maps. it's also great for armchair viewing at home..

Tour de France

The Official Tour de France race guide is published in the months leading up to the race.

The 2022 UK edition will be available to order on this special editions landing page .

You need to order the UK edition from the UK and have it sent to a UK address. It cannot be delivered outside the UK for licensing reasons.

Note I am not the publisher of the official Tour de France Race Guide - I am only the messenger. ASO, the Tour de France organisers, licenses the publication of the guide in local markets each year. This is why the quality varies across markets.

Here is what to expect once published.

There are usually two UK editions.

1) The Standard Edition  of the Official Tour de France 2022 Race Guide (UK/English), £10.99 – see this page .

2) The Premium Edition of the Official Tour de France 2022 Race Guide (UK/English), £16.99 – see this page .

Tour de France Race Guide

Non-UK readers

Please note that reader feedback suggests that some of the versions below (published in other countries by local publishers on contract) are not as comprehensive as the UK English-language version. * The Australian and New Zealand edition – this is being published by Ride Media. See here . I do not know if it will be as extensive as the UK edition in terms of carrying all stage maps and race timings. * For the US – this is being published by VeloNews via their Peloton brand. See here .  I do not know if it will be as extensive as the UK edition in terms of carrying all stage maps and race timings. * The original French-language version is released in France and is made available at newsagents and tabacs (corner stores).

What's usually included in the UK English-language edition ?

I cannot speak for the US and Australian versions as I do not receive them, so this info relates to the UK English edition.

We find the UK version of the guide invaluable when planning our trips to watch the Tour de France. It's got maps of every stage, plus full team and stage profiles, as well as stage start and end times (they are particularly useful to have in one place both when planning and on the day).

There is a 'premium' edition' as well as a 'standard edition' that includes stuff like:

Standard UK English-language Edition – £10.99 – see this page .

  • 204-page program/magazine with individual stage maps + stage start/end times + Tour de France Femmes info
  • Set of 3 beer mats
  • 28-page Alpe d’Huez supplement (the supplement for this year's TDF guide focuses on iconic moments of Alpe d'Huez to both celebrate its inclusion in this year's race and 70 years since its first inclusion at the TDF)
  • France wall poster of the entire route

Premium UK English-language Edition – £16.99 – see this page .

  • Souvenir TDF socks

Why get it?

We wouldn't go to watch a Tour de France stage without it.

We get dozens of emails every day asking for information about following the Tour de France – I always tell them to get a copy of the official race guide to make planning easier.

This guide has lots of info that can help you plan your trip. While it is published too early to include all road closure information ( see this page for that ), having all the stage information in one place is really handy. It basically replicates the official TDF website but in a much more easily digestible format and in much more detail.

Each stage is profiled with a map that helps you put key cols and stage towns into perspective, and to see clearly where access roads may be. The pullout map then gives a full overview of how the stages interact.

Those UK links again ...

1) The Standard Edition of the Official Tour de France 2022 Race Guide (UK/English), £10.99 – see this page .

This guide SELLS OUT EVERY YEAR, often weeks before the Tour. If you are thinking of watching the Tour de France in person , you should order a copy as soon as it's released.

Tour de France 2022: The Route

Tour de France 2022

Stage 1 is a flat individual time trial in Copenhagen. Although featuring some sharp turns, the course suits specialist who can push a big gear.

At 199 kilometres, the 2nd stage is going to be a coastal ride between Roskilde and Nyborg. The first half of the race takes in three short climbs in quick succession – Côte d’Asnæs Indelukke, Côte d’Høve Stræde and Côte de Karup Strandbakke -, while the exposed and 18 kilometres Great Belt Bridge in the finale could have an impact when it’s windy. Yet, a sprint is the most likely outcome.

Same goes for stage 3 . The 182 kilometres route travels from Vejle to Sønderborg. Slightly more undulating, but the highest point of the day says it all. Côte de Genner Strand peaks out at 57 metres – so yes, this one should be for fast finishers also.

The 4th stage starts in Dunkirk to finish in Calais before the 5th stage will be the Tour de France’s take on Paris-Roubaix.

Stage 6 sets off from Wallonia, Belgium, to finish in Longwy, possibly with a punchy finish climb up to the local Citadel.

A hard stage takes place on stage 7 , when the riders travel from Tomblaine to La Planche des Belles Filles. It’s the sixth inclusion of the Vosges climb in the last ten editions – after finishes in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2020. It will be the same finish as in 2019 (Dylan Teuns victory), so with an unpaved sector of 1 kilometre after the original climb. This way the ascent totals 7 kilometres at 8.7%.

Stage 8 goes from Dole to Lausanne before stage 9 on the second Sunday entails a race from Aigle to Châtel.

Week 2 The Alps will be on the menu in the second week. The first test is set to be a race from Morzine to Megève, while stage 11 take things up a notch with a finish at the Col du Granon, which is a 12 kilometres climb at 10% on a narrow road.

Stage 12 is this year’s Bastille Day race, which is a perfect opportunity for the French riders to whip their compatriots up into a frenzy of excitement. The stage traverses the Alps to finish in L’Alpe d’Huez. It has been four years since the resort town saw Geraint Thomas sprint to victory ahead of Tom Dumoulin. The famed finish climb with 21 hair pins is 13.8 kilometres long and rises at 8.1%.

A race from Bourg d’Oisans to Saint-Étienne is on the cards as stage 13 , while stage 14 travels to the airport of Mende. The line will be located 1.5 kilometres after a 3 kilometres climb at 10.2%. Stephen Cummings outsmarted Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet at this finish in 2015, while Omar Fraile won from the breakaway in 2018.

The 15th stage is a transition stage from Rodez to Carcassonne in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Week 3 Stage 16 leads to Foix before the pure bred mountain goats will have it their way for two consecutive days. Stage 17 takes in the Col d’Aspin, Hourquette d’Anzican and Col de Val-Louron-Azet before a summit finish in Peyragudes.

Stage 18 sets off from from Lourdes to finish in Hautacam after intermediate climbs up the Col d’Aubisque and Col de Spandelles. The climb to the Hautacam resort is 13.6 kilometres long and averages 7.8%, while the second half is much harder than the first.

Just like in the two recent editions, Le Tour serves an individual time trial on the penultimate day of action. The medieval village of Rocamadour in the Dordogne hosts the finish of the rolling test with a punchy finish.

Obviously, the 2022 Tour de France finishes at the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The 21st stage kicks off in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris.

Customer Reviews

Another fine, comprehensive and interesting edition. Only one gripe - the cost of postage to Australia. Barely worth buying, and that's only because it was on special (subtract one star ...)

Brilliant look back at 2022. Full of stats, results and excellent articles. Perfect for all racing cyclist fans.

For cycling race nerds this is as good as it gets. All the major and minor details for everything road cycling. Full of interesting tidbits that would probably not be known unless you worked with or were part of a cycling team(s).

In this day and age - where everything is just a mouse-click or two away - there is something so refreshing about getting the Road Book out.

The 'In their own Words', Ned's editorial introduction, and all the essays are brilliant in themselves - and well worth reading straight away.

But the beauty of this book lies elsewhere. Sure, I get the 2022 edition out from time to time. But invariably, when I'm reading about a rider or a race from a previous season, I find myself reverting to an earlier edition. And that is where the real fun begins! So often I find myself getting lost in a half-remembered race, and then going off on a half-dozen different tangents.

What a wonderful way to look back on a cycling season. And just like a good wine, each Rood Book will only become more important with the passing of time.

So much care and thought has gone into the Road Book; top quality production and paper.

A treasure! I can't recommend this book highly enough.

2023 Tour de France route

From the Basque Country to Paris and all the stages in between

Tour de France 2023 map

The 2023 Tour de France got underway on July 1st in Bilbao, Spain with another demanding route that includes only a single 22km hilly time trial in the Alps and mountain stages in all five of France’s mountain ranges. From the Grand Départ in the Basque Country to the finish in Paris, Cyclingnews has all the route details.

The very limited amount of time trialling and preponderance of mountains no doubt suits French riders  Thibaut Pinot , David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. As a result, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglič and Geraint Thomas targeted the Giro d’Italia, which had three times the amount of time trialling and fewer mountains.

Official information from race organiser ASO claimed the 3,404km route includes eight flat stages for the sprinters, four hilly stages suited to breakaways and eight mountain stages. Four of these include summit finishes: in the Pyrenees at Cauterets-Cambasque, on the legendary Puy de Dôme volcano in the Massif Central, on the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

Tour de France 2023 route revealed Tour de France stage-by-stage previews 2023 Tour de France to start in the Basque Country 2023 Tour de France set to return to Puy de Dome mountain finish

The other mountain stages are also extremely difficult, even if some are short and extra intense.

Stage 14 to Morzine includes 4,200m of climbing, alongside the mighty Col de Joux Plane and its testing descent to the finish. Stage 15 ends with the 11% ‘wall’ of Côte des Amerands and then the 7km 7.7% climb up to Saint-Gervais in view of Mont-Blanc.

Compressed profiles of the final week of the Tour de France

Stage 17 to Courchevel is arguably the queen stage, climbing the 2,304m-high Col de la Loze and then descends to finish on the altiport runway. Stage 20 is a final brutal multi-mountain stage in the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve Valley near Sallanches after the second rest day, but the 22km route between Passy and Combloux will test riders' bike handling skills and climbing as much as their time trialling. The stage includes the Côte de Domancy, where Bernard Hinault forged his 1980 Worlds victory, and which also featured as part of the final week time trial in the 2016 Tour.

2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was arguably the best climber of the last two editions of the Tour and he appears to have plenty of opportunities to go on the attack on the steep ascents in 2023.

Two-time winner  Tadej Pogačar  will no doubt relish the route on offer for next July’s challenge against Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and anyone else.

Blimey bigfoot, that’s amazing, cheers. 👍

I am being a bit dim here. What do you search for to get the roadbook in an app?

I presume the app referred to is this one… https://www.letour.fr/en/mobiles-apps

I can’t see the actual roadbook on this app. Some of the info is the same but the actual roadbook gives masses of detailed info…

The roadbook has its own app (publisher, on android at least: MAOGANI) – you need that username/password up there to use it.

The app is, imaginatively, called Tour de France Roadbook.

Cheers, spot on 🙂

Excellent, thanks 👍

Tour de France 2024 route: Two individual time trials, five summit finishes and gravel sectors

Tour de France 2024 route totals 3,492km of racing with 52,320 metres of overall elevation across 21 stages

The 2023 podium at the Tour de France

  • Stage summary

The Tour de France 2024 route will include five summit finishes, 59km of individual time trialling, and gravel sectors on stage nine, it has been announced by its organiser ASO.

The route for the 111th edition of the race was unveiled in a presentation inside Paris's Palais des Congrès on Wednesday.

It begins on the 29 June, and finishes on the 21 July, three weeks later.

As was confirmed last year, the race will begin in Italy for the first time , with stages from Florence to Rimini, Cesenatico to Bologna and Piacenza to Turin. It will mark 100 years since the first Italian winner of the Tour, Ottavio Bottecchia.

Another first is that the Tour will not conclude in Paris for the first time ever, due to the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the final stage coming in Nice. It also means that for the first time since 1989, the final stage will be contested, in a time trial.

On the way, the race tackles the Alps, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, including four summit finishes at Pla d'Adet, the Plateau de Beille, Superdévoluy, Isola 2000 and the Col de la Couillole, and 59 kilometres of time trialling across stages seven and 21.

There are 14 gravel sectors on stage nine from Troyes to Troyes, totalling 32km, with six packed into the final 35km in what could be a decisive point of the race. The longest is 4km.

With the final day a hilly time trial in Nice and not the usual procession in to Paris, it is hoped that the race will be alive right to the end of the race. The whole final week, in fact, will be crucial for general classification, with four of the six days potentially decisive.

According to the race organisers, there are eight sprint opportunities along the way, although some are not as straightforward as others, with a breakaway sure to contest some of them. Mark Cavendish will be looking forward to Saint-Amand-Montrond on stage 13, where he won in 2013, and Nîmes on stage 16 especially, where he won in 2008.

Last year, the race was dominated by Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), who crushed all of his competition, including Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), on the stage 16 time trial to Combloux and stage 17's summit finish in Courchevel .

Tour de France 2024 route

Tour de France 2024 route week one

The 2024 Tour de France begins how it means to go on, with a lot of climbing. Stage one begins in Florence, and includes 3,800km over 205km, the most ever in an opening stage, according to race director Christian Prudhomme.

The second stage is also hilly, starting from Marco Pantani's hometown of Cesenatico, finishing in Bologna through Emilia-Romagna. It copies the route of the Giro dell'Emilia, including the final climb of San Luca - 1.9km at 10.6 per cent - which is tackled twice.

There is a chance for the fast men on stage three, which covers 225km from Piacenza to Turin.

Stage four sees the race finally reach France, via the Alps. The Sestriere, the Col de Montgenèvre and the Col du Galiber are all tackled before a descent to Valloire.

Stages five and six, to Saint-Vulbas and Dijon, should be sprint opportunities, but the fast men could be ambushed.

The race's first individual time trial comes on stage seven, but it will be a technical affair as opposed to a pure rouleur 's course, before stage eight should be another chance for the sprinters.

Stage nine could be the highlight of the opening week, and is certainly something new, using the gravel roads of the Champagne region to mix things up. The 32km of gravel across 14 sectors is inspired from the Tour de France Femmes 2022, which used two of the same tracks; it is the biggest use of gravel at the Tour to date.

Tour de France 2024 route week two

After a rest day in Orléans, the closest to Paris the race gets in 2024, there are four stages which head south towards the Pyrenees.

Stage ten will surely be a sprint stage, but the winds could blow, as they did in 2013, when Cavendish won, while stage 11 is a return to medium mountains. The stage to Le Lioran is similar to the one which Greg Van Avermaet triumphed on in 2016, taking the yellow jersey in the process. 4,500m of climbing will make this a tough test for everyone.

It's back to sprinting or breakaways on stages 12 and 13 to Villeneuve-sur-Lot and Pau, respectively, with the latter looking more nailed on for a bunch finish.

Stage 14 is the first Pyrenean test, finishing atop the Pla d'Adet, which marks Raymond Poulidor's victory up there 50 years ago; it follows the Col du Tourmalet and the Hourquette d’Ancizan in just 152 km.

After that, the climbing does not stop. On Bastille Day, Catorze Juillet , the race heads from Loudenvielle to Plateau de Beille, in a stage that covers 198 km, with 4,850 metres of climbing. The Peyresourde is tackled first, followed by the Col de Menté, the Col de Portet d’Aspet, the Col de la Core, and Col d’Agnès, before the final test to Plateau de Beille. It will surely help decide the direction of the race.

Tour de France 2024 route week three

A classic transition stage follows the second rest day from Gruissan to Nîmes, which is planned as a sprint stage, but if the winds blow, mayhem could ensue.

Stage 17 is a return to the mountains with a finish in the ski resort of Superdévoluy on the fringes of the Alps, before stage 18 looks set to be a breakaway day as the race travels from Gap to Barcelonnette.

It is the final three days where the 2024 champion will be crowned, however, with two back-to-back summit finishes in southeast France. Stage 19 finishes atop Isola 2000, with the Col de Vars, at 2,120m, before the Col de la Bonnette, at 2,802m, marks the high point of the race, and then there's Isola 2000.

Stage 20 feels like a Paris-Nice penultimate stage, and kind of is, with some of the favourite climbs from the race tackled consecutively. The Col de Braus is first, 10.2km at 6.3 per cent, before the Col de Turini, 20.6km at 5.6 per cent, and then the Col de La Colimiane, 7.6km at 6.8 per cent, and then, finally the Col de la Couillole, 15.7km at 7.1 per cent. That's 4,500m of elevation in just 132km.

However, that is not the end of the race. This year, there is a final day time trial around Nice, not a procession in Paris. The 35km course includes La Turbie, 8.1km at 5.6 per cent, and the Col d’Eze, 1.6km at 8.1%, before concluding on the Promenade des Anglais.
