Before agreeing to Lord Indra’s request sage Dadhichi asked for one last wish of his to be fulfilled prior to sacrificing his life. He told that he wished to make a pilgrimage to all the sacred places of the country plus bathe in all the sacred rivers prior to ending his life. As that would have wasted much time, all sacred rivers and sites were beckoned at this very place so that Dadhichi last wish could be kept. As waters of many sacred rivers mingled here, this kund is also referred to as Misrit Teerth.

Pandav Qila is an ancient fort where the Pandavas of famous epic Mahabharata are said to have put up during their years of exile. The story goes that King Virat; another character from Mahabharata was the original owner of this fort which later the Pandavas had used as their shelter. The fort bears the idols of Panch Pandavs in company of Lord Krishna. The fort lies southwest of Chakra Tirtha, along the river banks of Gomti. Historical records say that around 1305 AD this fort was renovated under the initiative of a Hindu minister working under Alauddin Khilji.

Naimisharanya Tourism – A Sacred Place Near Sitapur

Naimisharanya is unique in that it is the only place, apart from Patal Bhuvaneshwar, where it is believed the pantheon of 33 crores Hindu Gods and Goddesses reside. Naimisharanya also claims the distinction of being the first and most sacred of all Tirth Sthans for Hindus. If one performs penance here for 12 years one goes straightaway to Brahmaloka. Visiting Naimisharanya is equivalent to visiting all the important Tirth Sthans. This is the only place to find mention in all important Hindu sacred texts.

The temple timings are – 5 am to 9 pm. The temple remains closed between 12 pm in the afternoon and 4 pm in the evening.

History of Naimisharanya

The Gods selected this spot to establish Dharma but Vrittasur, a demon, proved to be an obstacle whereupon they requested sage Dadhichi to donate his bones from which a weapon could be made to destroy the demon. The Bhagvat Purana mentions this place and calls it naimishe-animisha-kshetra or the abode of Lord Vishnu who is also known as Animisha. Lord Vishnu killed Durjaya and his gang of demons at this spot in a split second. He also destroyed Gayasura and cut his body into three parts with one part falling in Gaya in Bihar, the second in Naimisharanya and the third in Badrinath. The word Nimisha also means a part of a second. It is believed the Brahma Mano Maya Chakra fell here giving the place its name. Nemi is the outer surface of a charka (wheel). Naimisharanya vana has a circumbulatory path of 16 km which encompasses all sacred places of India according to one belief. Naimisharanya is old as time according to legend and the significance of this place was given to saints. It is believed Satrupa and Swayambhuva Manu performed penance for 23000 years in order to have Lord Narayana be born as their son. Lord Rama performed Ashwamedha yagna here to celebrate his victory over Ravana. Ved Vyasa put together the 6 shastras, 18 Puranas, and 4 Vedas at this spot and it was here that the Srimad Bhagavatam was spoken out loud at one stretch. The Pandavas and Lord Balarama, brother of Lord Krishna, visited this place. Tulsidas is believed to have penned the Rama Charita Manas here.

Just like every other ancient temple in India there are a number of legends associated with this holy destinations, some of them are:

• It is believed that the Hindu sage Narada, was looking for the best Teertha (water body) across the 3 worlds. He covered various holy centres of pilgrimage including the Kailash Parvat which was the home of Lord Shiva; Parkadal which was the home for Lord Vishnu and finally reached this water body in the Naimisha forest. This makes it one of the most pious and pure place of worship, especially because of the belief that the presiding deity was believed to be worshipped by all the celestial deities.
• Another legend goes back to the time when the king of devas – Indra was driven out of the Devlok by an Asura called Vritra. The Asura was immortal due to a boon. However as per the advice of Lord Vishnu, Indra went to sage Dadhichi to ask for his bones to fashion out a weapon to kill Vritra. Dadhichi mentioned his wish to visit all the holy rivers before dying. In order to fulfill his wish and not waste any further time Indra decided to direct all the water from the holy rivers to Naimisharanya.
• Another legend mentions about the fact that once when the sages were deciding in performing a penance, then Lord Brahma produced a ring out of the Darbha grass and advised the sages to perform penance at the place where the ring had fallen. This place where the ring had fallen down is said by Naimisharanya and it was here where the sages had performed their penance and Lord Vishnu had appeared to accept their prayers and holy offerings.

Religious Significance:

Naimisharanya is not a recently developed pilgrimage destination but it has always been of religious importance. This ancient pilgrimage destination has always been of prime attraction to sages, scholars and other devotees. This place has also found its mention in Rigveda, along with having being mentioned in the holy Puranas where it has been mentioned as one of the most highly revered pilgrimage destination. It has also found its mention in Valmiki’s Ramayana and later on in the epic Raghuvansham which was written by the ancient Sanskrit poet Kalidas. This spiritual Hindu centre of learning which is also a meditation centre. People gather here to take a holy dip in its water and clean their sins.

The temple is located right at the junction of the roads running between Sitapur and Khairabad. It is situated at a mere distance of 32 kms from Sitapur and 42 kms from the Sandila railway station. From Lucknow the temple is seated at a north ward distance of 45 miles. Naimisharanya sits majestically on the banks of river Gomati which ranks among one of the most holy rivers of India. The sacred well inside this holy temple’s premises which is named Chakra Kunda is believed to have been a ring belonging to Lord Vishnu and people visit the Kund to take a holy dip in its water.

• Dadheechi Kund: –  Indra, the king of Gods prayed to sage Dadheechi to give up his bones in order to kill the demon Vritta Asur. He agreed but on one condition that he would do so after visiting all holy rivers and spots. The gods were in a hurry and brought all those places together at this spot to grant Dadheechi his wish after which he gave up his bones from which a weapon, the Vajr, was made that ultimately killed Vrittasur. Bathing in this kund is equivalent to bathing in all holy spots in India.
• Suth Gaddi: –  The sage Suth, a disciple of Ved Vyaasa, discoursed to 88000 sages at this spot.
• Hanuman Gaddi and Pandav Killa: –  This is the spot from where Hanuman, after killing Ahiraavan, freed Ram and Lakshman and traveled South. The Pandavas performed penance at the spot known as Pandav killa.
• Dasaashwamedha Ghat: –  Lord Rama performed the tenth Ashwamedha yagna at this spot marked by an ancient temple with the idols of Lord Rama, Lakshman, and Sita.
• Swayambhu Manu and Satrupa: –  This is the spot where Swayambhu Manu and Satrupa performed penance for 23000 years to obtain their boon that Lord Narayana be born as their son.

The winter months lasts from September to January or mid-February where the temperature stays between 3 to 12 or 15 degrees Celsius. The Mahabharata: It is said that the Mahabharata, the epic that narrates the story of the Kurukshetra war and the Pandavas, was recited by sage Vaisampayana to King Janamejaya in Naimisharanya. King Janamejaya was the grandson of Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, and he wanted to know the history of his ancestors. The sacrifice of sage Dadhichi: It is said that sage Dadhichi, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, sacrificed his life and bones in Naimisharanya, to help the gods defeat the demons. The gods needed a weapon made of the bones of a sage, to kill the demon Vritrasura, who had a boon that he could not be killed by any metal or wood. Sage Dadhichi agreed to give his bones, and meditated in Naimisharanya until he left his body. The gods then used his bones to make a thunderbolt, called Vajra, and gave it to Indra, the king of the gods, who killed Vritrasura with it.

The visit of Lord Rama: It is said that Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, visited Naimisharanya during his 14-year exile in the forest. He met sage Bharadwaja, who welcomed him and offered him hospitality. He also met sage Vashishtha, who was his guru and family priest, and sought his blessings. He also performed a yajna (sacrifice) in Naimisharanya, to please the gods and seek their protection.

The exile of the Pandavas: It is said that the Pandavas, the five brothers who fought the Kurukshetra war, spent some time in Naimisharanya during their 12-year exile in the forest. They met sage Vyasa, who was their grandfather and the author of the Mahabharata, and sought his guidance. They also met sage Lomaharshana, who narrated to them the stories of the Ramayana and the Puranas. They also performed a yajna in Naimisharanya, to seek the favor of the gods and prepare for the war.

The birth of Lord Balarama: It is said that Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna, was born in Naimisharanya. He was the son of Vasudeva and Rohini, who were the parents of Lord Krishna. However, due to a prophecy that the eighth son of Vasudeva would kill the evil king Kamsa, Vasudeva had to exchange his newborn son Krishna with the daughter of Nanda and Yashoda, who were the cowherds of Vrindavan. He also sent his wife Rohini to Naimisharanya, to protect her from Kamsa. Rohini gave birth to Balarama in Naimisharanya, under the protection of sage Garga, who was the family priest of the Yadavas, the clan of Vasudeva and Krishna.

The composition of Ramcharitmanas: It is said that Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet and saint, composed his famous work Ramcharitmanas, which is a Hindi version of the Ramayana, in Naimisharanya. He was inspired by the stories of Lord Rama that he had heard from his guru, Naraharidas, who was a disciple of sage Lomaharshana. He wrote the Ramcharitmanas in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi, and made it accessible to the common people. It is said that Lord Hanuman stayed here for some time, when he was searching for Sita, who was abducted by the demon king Ravana. He also met Tulsidas here, and inspired him to write the Ramcharitmanas. The temple has a large idol of Lord Hanuman, and a smaller idol of Lord Rama and Sita. You can offer prayers to Lord Hanuman, and seek his protection and strength.

Pandav Kila:

This is a fort that was built by the Pandavas, during their 12-year exile in the forest. It is said that they stayed here for some time, and performed a yajna to seek the favor of the gods and prepare for the war. The fort is now in ruins, but you can still see some of the structures and walls that were built by the Pandavas. You can also explore the nearby caves, where the Pandavas hid their weapons.

This is a pond where Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, took a bath, when she visited Naimisharanya with her husband and brother-in-law. It is said that the water of the pond turned golden, due to the touch of Sita, who was the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. The pond is also known as Swarnakund, meaning the golden pond. You can take a dip in the pond, and feel the divine presence of Sita.

Mishrikh: This is a place located about 20 km from Naimisharanya, where Tulsidas composed his famous work Ramcharitmanas, which is a Hindi version of the Ramayana. He also performed a yajna here, to invoke the blessings of Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman, before starting his work. There is a temple here, dedicated to Tulsidas, where you can see his statue and his writings. You can also visit the nearby ashram, where he lived and taught his disciples.

Neemsar: This is a place located about 25 km from Naimisharanya, where Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna, was born. He was the son of Vasudeva and Rohini, who were the parents of Lord Krishna. However, due to a prophecy that the eighth son of Vasudeva would kill the evil king Kamsa, Vasudeva had to exchange his newborn son Krishna with the daughter of Nanda and Yashoda, who were the cowherds of Vrindavan. He also sent his wife Rohini to Neemsar, to protect her from Kamsa. Rohini gave birth to Balarama in Neemsar, under the protection of sage Garga, who was the family priest of the Yadavas, the clan of Vasudeva and Krishna. There is a temple here, dedicated to Lord Balarama, where you can worship his idol and seek his blessings.

These are some of the places that you can visit in Naimisharanya, and experience the spiritual and cultural richness of the place. You can also visit some other places, such as Dadhichi Kund, where sage Dadhichi sacrificed his life and bones, Naimisharanya Museum, where you can see some artifacts and sculptures related to the history and mythology of the place, and Naimisharanya Forest, where you can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the place.

Naimisharanya sacred land of veda and purana.

In the forests of Naimisharanya, sat the 88,000 Rishis and Ved Vyasa revealing the Vedas, Puranas, and Shastras to them. You read any Indian scripture, and you find the mention of Naimisharanya. The name itself contains the word ‘Aranya’ meaning it was a forest.

This is a forest where the Rishis lived, meditated, and did their Sadhna. It is the Tapobhoomi or the land where the Rishis meditated. The collective energy they concentrated in this area makes Naimisharanaya the holiest of the Indian places. It is also referred to as Nemisharan, Naimisaranya, Neemsar, Naimish, Nimkhar, Nimsar, Naimisaranyam.

Naimisharanya History

It is said that in the four Yugas there were 4 primary Tirthas or Pilgrimage places. In the first age, i.e. in Satyuga it was Naimisharanaya , in Treta yuga it was Pushkar , in Dwapar it was Kurukshetra and in Kaliyug there is Ganga . So, visiting it is like time travel back to Satyuga.

The forest no longer exists. A nicely paved roads take you to the pilgrim places which are haphazardly built temples around the trees that must have heard the original stories told by the Rishis. You can safely assume that it is one of the oldest places written about.

It is believed that when Brahma Ji wanted life on earth, he gave the responsibility to the first couple – Manu and Satrupa. Manu & Satrupa did Sadhna at Naimisharanya for good 23,000 years. So, they are the ultimate parents for all of us. In fact, I remember the Pandit Ji at Manu-Satrupa temple saying – Yeh mere Baap ka Ghar hai or this is my father’s house. Hope this emotion actually translates into bringing all of us together.

Naimisharanya the Sacred Land of Holy Scriptures: Veda, Purana & Satyanarayan Katha

Naimisharanya’s biggest claim on Indian history is that all our scriptures were written here. This includes 4 Vedas – Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Saam Veda, and Atharva Veda.

Then there 18 are 18 Mahapuranas like Skanda Purana, Vishnu Puran, Brahmand Puran, Ling Puran, Narad Puran, Garud Puran, Brahma Puran, Padam Puram, Kurama Puran, Bhagwat Puran, Agni Puran, Markandeya Puran, Brahma Vaivartaka Puran, Varah Puran, Bhavishya Puran, Narad Puran, Matsaya Puran, Brahmand Puran.

Six Shastras written at Naimisharanya are Sankhya, Yog, Vedant, Nyay, Mimansa, and Vaisaishik.

Satyanarayan Katha

We all know that Satyanarayan Katha is a part of Satyanarayana Puja that is done by householders across India. Usually done on a full moon day, its popularity comes from the fact that it can be done simply by anyone and along with family and friends. I discovered that Satyanarayan Katha was also spoken here by Ved Vyas to Suta here, who in turn told it to Shaunak and other Rishis.

Nabhi Gaya Kshetra

Another name for Naimisharanya is Nabhi Gaya Kshetra. It is said that Maha Vishnu killed the demon Gayasur by cutting his body into three parts. The head part fell in Badrinath which is also called Kapali Gaya, the feet part feel at Gaya and hence it is also called Pada Gaya and the middle part fell at Naimisharanya and hence it is called Nabhi Gaya.

Another legend says that Maha Vishnu killed demons who were troubling the sages in a moment or Nimish, hence the place got its name.

Sri Ram after returning from Sri Lanka performed an Ashwamedha Yagna, which was also performed at Naimisharanya. It is the same place where Devi Sita went back to earth. I wonder if it formed a part of the Kosala Kingdom in his times.

Adi Shankaracharya visited Naimisharanya when he was going around the country. Poet Surdas lived here. References are found in literature from Vaishnava saints of Tamil country. Mahabharata was spoken here during a congregation of saints headed by Rishi Shaunak.

Amavasya or the new moon day is considered very holy to take a dip here. There is an 84 Kos Yatra that takes place around Naimisharanya from the Amavasya to Purnima (new moon to full moon) of the lunar month of Phalgun.

Places to Visit at Naimisharanya

There are 5 major places to visit:

• Chakratirth and the temples surrounding it

Sri Lalita Devi Mandir

• Vyas Gaddi near Gomti or Adi Ganga River
• Hanuman Garhi & Pandav Kila

Dadhichi Kund

Each of these is located at some distance from each other and demands some time to be spent there.

I visited it during Pitrpaksha or the fortnight in the year that is dedicated to ancestors. I saw a lot of families, especially couples doing Pind Daan or ancestor worship.

Chakratirtha

This is the core Tirtha at Naimisharanya. It is a circular pond that is believed to be formed by the Chakra of Mahavishnu. The overflowing water is used by the pilgrims to have a holy dip in the Tirtha. It is believed that the holy waters of all the holy places in India or Bharatvarsha are present here at Chakratirtha.

Story of Chakratirtha

It is said that once the Asuras were troubling the rishis and interrupting their Sadhna. They all approached Brahma and he created a Chakra with the rays of the sun. He asked the Rishis to follow the Chakra or Disc and wherever it stops, they can live there, peacefully. The chakra stopped at Naimisharanya. Nemi means the periphery and it defines the periphery of the pond here. It is said that the water in the pond comes from Paatal Loka.

The chakra is called Manomaya Chakra. Chakratirtha is supposed to be the center of the universe.

As of now, this circular pond is surrounded by many small temples and a few smaller ponds. As we entered the circular periphery, we first saw a Krishna temple , then a huge hall with platforms to sit for people performing rituals for the ancestors. Going clockwise, we stopped at the Shiva temple – Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple.

Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple

This is an ancient temple with idols of all paths of Hinduism on its wall. The main wall behind the Mukhalinga has a large Mahavishnu Murti. Then there is Ganesh, Kartikeya, Sun, Ma Kali, Durga as Mahishasurmardini, Rishi Dadhichi & Brahma Ji. All

We reached around the morning Arti time and witnessed the morning Shringar and the Aarti. Priests were kind enough to allow us to stay inside the temple during Aarti while most people watched it from outside. I take it as a blessing.

The priest told me that the Bhuteshwar Mahadev is present here as Saakar Ling. He is worshipped in three different forms during the day. In the morning it is the Bholenath or the Childlike Shiva, in the afternoon it is Rudra or the aggressive form of Shiva and in the evening it is Karuna roop or the Compassionate Shiva.

After this is a Hanuman temple.

Shringi Rishi Temple

A small temple is dedicated to Shringi Rishi who meditated here. There is an interesting representation of the Rishi with two horns on either side. There are of course recent murtis in marble of both Shringi Rishi and Ma Shanta.

Gokarn Nath Temple

This is another small but ancient Shiva temple. The Shivalinga here is in a pit indicating that the ground around it has risen with time. Like Bhuteshwar Mahadev Mandir it also has the murtis of all the deities like Durga, Ganesha, Surya, etc.

Siddhi Vinayak is a small temple with a single murti of Ganesha along with a temple dedicated to Saraswati.

After this, we found two small tanks, one with a figure of Laxmi sitting on a lotus flower and another with a Brahma figure. The wall of the steps leading to had some old idols fixed in them. I could recognize a few of them while others remain a mystery. Vermilion smeared on them told me that they are still worshipped.

We turned around and passed by a bright yellow temple with a pillared corridor. A gentleman sat there reading the newspaper and the board next to him said he is an astrologer. Now, I always find astrologers very interesting people to talk to. They have stories that can compete with the stories of Psychiatrists or doctors or maybe lawyers. It is fascinating how they talk and manipulate you into believing that they have answers to all your problems. After a quick chat with him, we moved ahead.

We found a small temple in yellow called Surya Narayana though it has a marble Shivalinga inside it. What I found interesting is that it has a basic Sri Chakra carved behind the Shivalinga.

Chakra Narayana Temple

This, in my opinion, is the most important temple at Chakratirtha or Naimisharanya. Vishnu here is present in the form of a Chakra. Vishnu sitting on a lotus flower is enclosed within his Chakra or wheel. It is a beautiful image carved on the wall, which looked like a black stone to me. It was nicely decorated with some relatively new Murtis around it.

Next, we visited the Badri Narayan temple . On the day we visited many couples were doing rituals for their ancestors. We tip-toed around to have a quick darshan and we were back to where we started our circumambulation around the Chakratirtha.

Not many people know about this place, and spending some time here was like getting to know a part of our history and scriptures firsthand.

I have been chanting Lalita Sahasranama for some time now. I have been to many Devi temples like Kanchi Kamakshi , Kolhapur Mahalaxmi , and Kamrup Kamakhya but never came across a temple dedicated to Lalita herself. Nor do I remember coming across her idol. Even when I was headed there, I was told there is a Devi temple but no one called her Lalita. So when I reached there and read – Sri Lalita Temple, I literally had goosebumps.

There are two temples within the same complex dedicated to Sri Lalita. A relatively new temple with a new idol sitting on a high pedestal. This is the one you visit first. When you come out and go around, you see the triangular Yagnakund and then you come across a smaller temple. This old temple has the old idol of Sri Lalita. This is where her form matches the description of Devi in Lalita Sahasranama.

I was happy to have discovered her. Maybe it was she who answered my curiosity as it was not really on my plan on this trip to UP.

Shakti Peeth

Sri Lalita Devi Mandir is a Shakti Peeth . It is believed that the heart of Devi Sati fell here when Shiva was holding her body in a rage after Daksh Yagna. Here she is also called Ling-Dharini Shakti . Sri Lalita Devi is the presiding deity of Naimisharanya and your Yatra is not complete without paying respects to her.

Another legend says that when the Rishis came with the Chakra of Vishnu, the Chakra went inside the earth and too much water came out. It was Sri Lalita who controlled the water so that Rishis can meditate in peace.

Under a giant Vat Vriksh or Banyan Tree, Ved Vyas sat and narrated the scriptures that we now know as Vedas, Puranas, Shastras, et al. One of the old trees is believed to be more than 5000 years old dating back to the Mahabharat era or the time when Ved Vyas lived. It is this tree that is the real Vyas Gaddi. The tree is surrounded by modern temples one of which houses a Gaddi-like seat.

There is a small temple dedicated to Ved Vyas with a triangular pile of cloths representing him. Multiple boards tell you the scriptures written here at this spot.

An ancient Yagna Kund in a star shape that is now covered with ceramic tiles is worth a visit. It has a place for the Yajman or the sponsor to sit, surrounded by places for the Devtas and Yoginis to sit. A shelf there was lined up with scriptures – a perfect place to pick them up for your library, especially the Bhagwat Purana.

A temple dedicated to Satyanarayan Swami is located near Vyas Gaddi.

Adi Ganga or River Gomti

River Gomti that is also known as Adi Ganga flows close by. When I visited in early October, I had to walk a bit to reach the river. I assume the river would have changed course over a period of time. The giant idols of Kali, Bhiarava, and some Saints. There is another old Banyan Tree along the river and I wondered if this might have the tree where the Rishis sat and spoke the scriptures.

A small island stood in the middle of the river and a person sitting there told me that there used to be a temple on that island. It was washed a few years ago during floods. I tried to look hard but could not find any signs of any temple there. But then rivers have their own ways of participating in the cycle of creation and destruction.

Manu Satrupa Temple

Manu and Satrupa are the first couple of mankind as per the Hindu belief system. It is here that they meditated for 23,000 years after which they were blessed by Brahma as their progeny.

Pandav Kila & Hanuman Garhi

Hanumangarhi is what Hanuman temples are called in this region of Uttar Pradesh. Even in Ayodhya, all Hanuman temples are Hanumangarhi. There is a giant Murti of Hanuman. It is believed to be self-manifested. If you look intently, you would see small figurines of Ram & Laxman sitting on his shoulders.

The story goes that when Ram and Laxman were captured by Ahiravan during the Ram-Ravan war and taken to Patal Loka, it was Hanuman who brought them back. The place he came out is believed to be this temple. However, I heard the same story at Bet Dwarka which also has a temple dedicated to Hanuman and his son Makardhwaj called Dandi Hanuman.

At the temple, you can make out the antiquity of the Hanuman Murti and the fact that it has been worshipped for a long time. The rest of the temple is a recent construction.

Close to Hanumangarhi is a small temple with giant images of Pandavas & Krishna. It is called Pandav Kila or fort. I could not connect the dots, as it was just a hall with extremely mediocre images.

Not too far from it is a temple built in South Indian Style that has a golden pillar. The pillar has Garuda – the vehicle of Vishnu carved on it along with his other signs like Conch Shell and Chakra.

This is a typical tank that you find next to every temple. A fairly large tank with many temples surrounding it. The primary temple is dedicated to Rishi Dadhichi.

Dadhichi Kund is also called Misrikh Tirth

The story of Rishi Dadhichi is that of supreme sacrifice. Indra was once troubled by Asura called Vritti. Vritti has a boon that he can not be killed by any existing weapon, nor can he be killed by any weapon made of metal or wood. It made it impossible to kill him. Indra approached Vishnu, who suggested he take Dadhichi Rishi’s bones and make a weapon from them.

Indra approached Dadhichi Rishi at Naimisharnya and he agreed to donate his bones. However, he wanted to take a bath in all the holy waters around the country but had no time. So, Indra brought waters of all holy Tirthas to Naimisharanya. This is how Indra’s Vajra was created.

The tank is large and beautiful with ghats lines up all around it. The temple is simple but tells a few scenes from the life of Rishi Dadhichi. How I wish there were authentic books available for people to take with them from all these places.

I think Sita Kund and Narada Temple is something I missed on this trip. There are many Mutts that one can visit if one is associated with them.

• There are some hotels in the town, but I have not used them. So can not comment on them.
• Food options are also limited. If you are not comfortable with street food, carry your own food with you.
• The Pandas are ruthless. They would ask for money at every step. Keep quiet and move on. Do not engage with them, they can get abusive.
• You need a day to explore the place properly. Even if you do not engage in any rituals.

Located on the banks of River Gomti, the sacred place of Naimisharanya is linked to Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva. The word 'nemi' refers to the outer surface of the Sudarshana chakra (Lord Vishnu's weapon), and it is said that the place where it fell came to be known as Naimisharanya, the boundary of which includes the surrounding forest area. The spot where the chakra struck the earth, a water spring came out. Major attractions in Naimisharanya include Chakratirth, which marks the spot where Brahma’s chakra fell; Dashashwamedha Ghat, where Lord Rama performed the tenth Ashwamedha Yagna; Hanuman Garhi, where Lord Hanuman is said to have emerged after his victory over Ahiravana in Patal Lok; Lalita Devi Temple, dedicated to the presiding deity of Naimisharanya; Nardanand Saraswati Ashram, a centre for spiritual education; Pandal Kila, the fort of king Virat from the epic Mahabharata; Sita Kund, where Goddess Sita is said to have bathed before going into exile, and many other significant spots. 

It is believed to be the first and the most sacred of all the pilgrim centres for Hindus, and devotees visit this place to take a dip in the holy water. It has been said that Rama Charitha Manas was written here by poet Tulsidas. Another belief associated with Naimisharanya says that if you perform penance here for 12 years, you will be granted entrance to Brahmaloka (heaven).

Between Phalgun Amavasya (new moon) and Phalgun Poornima (full moon), Naimisharanya receives hundreds of devotees who come here to perform parikrama (circumambulation). Even for those with little or no religious interest, Naimisharanya is worth a visit. It is steeped in centuries-old history, and you can learn about ancient legends and take pictures of some of the most stunning structures in the country. It is located about 95 km from Lucknow.

Lord Vishnu advised him to meet sage Dadichi as in order to kill Vritra, and he should yield a weapon made from the bones of sage Dadichi.

Following his advice, Lord Indra met Dadichi. Dadichi agreed to help him, but before that, he wanted to satisfy his wish of going on a pilgrimage to all holy water bodies on earth. To save the time and effort, Lord Indra combined the waters of all present holy rivers to the water body of Naimisharanya. This way, Lord Indra was able to yield Vajrayudh, which he used to kill Vritha and reclaimed his position.

Dadhichi Kund is another important site of pilgrim attraction in Naimisharanya. According to the Hindu scriptures, sage Dadhichi gave up his life and donated his bones to Lord Indra to build the mightiest weapon of Vajrayudh. Using the weapon, Lord Indra killed the demon named Vritha in the battle and reclaimed his throne. His service to humanity and gods made this place divine, and it is also believed that taking a bath in this pond is sacred. Naimisharanya

Naimisharanya is one among the eight self-manifested holy places on this planet which are also known as ashta svayam-vykta kshetras. It is also revered amongst the great forests of Bharatavarsha. The followers of Ramanujacharya Sampradaya count it amongst the 108 Divya Desham Kshetras. Above all Naimisharanya is very deeply connected to the narration of Puranas especially the Srimad Bhagavata Purana. Here the Supreme Lord is worshiped in the form of forest just like He is worshiped in the form of water at Pushkar.

Anyone who worships Naimisharanya Tirtha, one’s half sins are immediately eradicated. And the moment one enters Naimisharanya, one is completely rid of all the sins. (Padma Purana)

In the conversation between Ugrashrava and Romaharshana recorded in the first chapter of Padma Purana , there appears the birth of the sacred tirtha – Naimisharanya. Once saintly persons and devotees had congregated on the banks of River Ganga in Prayagraj . They wanted to perform a yajna to worship the Supreme Lord and thus wanted to know about any sacred place to conduct it.

They approached Lord Narayana, who instantly invoked a chakra and informed the sages to follow it. At whichever place the spokes of this chakra will wither, consider that to be a sacred place and location for the yajna. The chakra travelled towards North and stopped at the place earlier known as Gangavarta. There it spokes withered and fell. Hence the place came to known as Naimisha. In Samskruta, naimi means spokes and vishirna means wither or disappear. Since this was a great forest earlier, this place came to be known as Naimisharanya.

In the Vayaviya Tantra , Lord Brahma, the engineer of this universe planned a great wheel which could encase this universe. The hub of this wheel was fixed at Naimisharanya. The Varaha Purana mentions that the performance of sacrifices at Naimisharanya curtails the strength of demoniac people.
