Summer Abroad for Teachers: Ways to Spend Summer Traveling as a Teacher

Summer abroad experiences can be incredibly enriching for teachers, providing them with new perspectives, cultural insights, and professional development opportunities. But, how is this possible? What options are there to spend summer abroad for teachers?

As a former teacher myself, I’ve spent multiple  summers abroad   teaching and traveling . Here are ten ideas and suggestions for teachers considering a summer abroad. Each one is different, and I’ll provide resources for getting started on your search. Looking for more opportunities? Get my list of over  200 teacher travel opportunities .

Table of Contents

Top questions for planning a summer abroad for teachers, how long are opportunities.

Most short-term teaching programs range from just a week to a few months. Some will last a full three months. It’s important to choose which one works best with your schedule before applying.

When should I start looking for these opportunities?

Some of the options for summer abroad for teachers are paid, some are ongoing professional development, and still others are volunteer based .

This one depends on which option you are choosing! Many fellowships and professional development programs will start applications during the fall prior to the summer. However, most jobs will begin recruiting a few months before.

You also want to consider any visas or updates to your passport you may need to make. It’s best to give yourself plenty of time to apply and ensure you are prepared for your summer abroad.

How much can I make during a summer abroad?

Salaries and benefits will be dependent on the type of teaching job, the location, and of course, the individual employer. However, as a guide, here’s a look at the average monthly pay and perks for typical short-term teaching opportunities.

  •  Summer camps: English teachers working at summer camps in Europe can expect free lodging and meals along with a monthly stipend of around $1,000 to $1,500 USD. Some camps in Germany can pay up to $2,500.
  • Internships: monthly salaries for teaching interns can range from $700-$1,000 USD. Some internships may include accommodation. Free accommodation is most common in China.
  • Volunteer: typically unpaid, but benefits generally include free accommodation, meals, and transportation. Other perks like language classes, insurance coverage, or excursions may be offered, too, depending on the program.
  • Language schools: salaries vary greatly depending on the country or region. English teachers at language schools in Eastern Europe can expect around $800-$1,100 USD a month, while teachers in Asia earn more, usually around $1,500-$2,500 USD.

Where can I go as a teacher for the summer?

Short-term teaching opportunities can be found all over the world but here are some of the best destinations to spend a few weeks or months abroad. You’ll find all types of options around the world, though these are some patterns I’ve seen.

Summer camps : Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are three of the most popular destinations for short-term summer camp opportunities.

Internships : teachers interning in Thailand, China, and Cambodia can expect good pay and benefits for their short-term assignments.

Volunteer : India, Peru, and Nepal happily welcome enthusiastic volunteer teachers and in return provide accommodation, meals, and eager and friendly students.

Language schools : Spain, Italy, Poland, Vietnam, and China are always looking for English speakers for short-term teaching gigs.

International Teaching Programs

Look for international teaching programs that offer short-term opportunities for teachers to work abroad during the summer. Many organizations facilitate exchanges or short-term placements where teachers can teach in a different country.

When searching for teaching jobs for the summer, the most common places to look are directly on school and language center websites, on ESL job boards, and through teaching abroad programs or recruiters.

Here are some places to look during your job hunt:

Teach Abroad Programs and TEFL Providers: CIEE Teach Abroad , The Cultural Exchange Project

Directly on school and language center websites: EF , Berlitz , Maximo Nivel , International House

TEFL Job Boards: Dave’s ESL , GoOverseas.com

TEFL and teacher recruiters: SeekTeachers

English Summer Camps

When it comes to building new skills and developing excellent traits for teaching, it’s hard to beat a summer school or camp.

A summer camp experience allows you to build a rapport with students, including not just English lessons, but also practical activities and an overall culture where students are encouraged to speak in English.

A summer school/camp is a perfect opportunity to show your flair for the unique and give memorable lessons in a different kind of environment. Both qualities blend into each other – you have to show initiative and wherewithal to put your stamp on proceedings.

Problem-solving skills are also vital. You’re likely to come up against challenges you’ve not faced as a teacher, so being able to think quickly is a boost. That, and of course, a real passion for teaching and for getting better at communicating, will make you an outstanding candidate to teach at a summer camp.

Some of the best camps for teachers hoping to gain summer experience include XUK in the UK, the ACLE camp in Italy, and Skouras in Greece. Some other well-known summer camps include The English Camp Company , The American Village , TECS , and The International Camp Network .

English Homestay Tutor or Au Pair

As a homestay tutor or au pair, you typically live with a local family abroad to help care for students on summer vacation and provide English tutoring services. These homestay experiences are a great way to teach English while immersing in the local culture.

A few different websites organize these types of programs, including Workaway , Au Pair , English Nanny , and The Cultural Exchange Project , which specializes in homestay tutor programs. As a homestay tutor or au pair, your salary is typically quite low and may only include room and board, and a small weekly stipend for spending money.

travel abroad teachers

Private Tutor

Teachers can also consider being a private tutor for the summer in a different country. There are two primary ways to become a private tutor: with an online teaching platform or independently. Those who tutor on a platform such as Preply   or Lingoda  enjoy access to a network of students, teaching resources, and marketing help. However, these platforms take a small commission fee or pay teachers a set rate for their services.

Those who opt to tutor privately can set their schedule and pay rate but must find their own students and market themselves independently. Many private tutors advertise their services on their social media accounts, local job boards, and websites like Fiverr   or LinkedIn .

Depending on experience and educational background, private English tutors can typically earn between $10-$25+ per hour.

Volunteer Opportunities

Consider volunteering with educational organizations or NGOs abroad. This can be a rewarding way to contribute your skills and make a positive impact on education in a different cultural context.

Charities are always looking for certified teachers to fill summer positions, and it’s all the better when they can do so without spending money.

Always choose these opportunities carefully to make sure you are going with an ethical, well-researched charity organization, especially if you’re teaching English abroad. Voluntourism is a major issue, and you do not want to contribute to these issues.

There are specific organizations, like Angloville ,  British Council’s ,  Global Volunteers , Family Legacy ,  and  Projects Abroad  – ethical companies or charities that encourage you to expand your experience teaching. I have personally volunteered and taught abroad with Family Legacy in Zambia .

Peace Corps Response   provides the opportunity to serve a much shorter term than the traditional two-year Peace Corps commitment. Teachers are frequently recruited for Peace Corps Response placements because many limited-term positions focus on education. The Peace Corps pays for your travel and provides a modest living allowance. The application process is lengthy but well worth it! Stints can span from a few months to a year.

Professional Development Travel Experiences

Attend workshops, conferences, or seminars in a foreign country that focus on your specific area of expertise or interest in education. This can be an excellent way to learn about innovative teaching methods and connect with educators from around the world.

Qatar Foundation International (QFI) provides professional and curriculum development for teachers to learn about Arab nations and cultures, some of which include travel.

Fund for Teachers awards fellowships for summer learning experiences to pre K-12 teachers, empowering them to pursue their passions to then pique student engagement. Each fellowship is as unique as the teacher who designed it, and regardless of the destination or discipline, FFT Fellows return to classrooms inspired by their pursuit of ideas, terrains, and cultures and are further equipped to transform student learning.

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit whose mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. The Teach Earth program is built upon the principle that every individual can contribute to a sustainable planet, regardless of scientific background or skill.

IIE , an independent non-profit organization founded in 1919, is a world leader in the exchange of people and ideas. IIE administers over 200 programs serving more than 20,000 individuals each year. Program participants are selected through a competitive, merit-based process.

A nonprofit organization devoted to the improvement of history education, Gilder Lehrman   has developed an array of programs for schools, teachers, and students that operate in all 50 states. Their workshops focus on American and world history. Private school teachers are expected to contribute to the cost of their workshops.

NEH  is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States, providing dozens of workshops and seminars during the summer months. They range from 1-6 weeks and are offered in the U.S.A. and abroad. Longer programs provide meatier stipends.

The NOAA Teacher at Sea  program provides hands-on learning experiences throughout the year. Teachers join a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research and survey ship to obtain “clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience.”

Language Immersion Programs/Courses

Participate in a language immersion program in a country where the language is spoken. This can enhance your language skills and give you a deeper understanding of language acquisition, which can be valuable when working with English language learners.

Language schools are always putting on summer classes, and they’re a great way to build your CV, as well as to prepare for the upcoming school year and land those excellent ESL jobs.

It’s common for contracted teachers to leave language schools in the middle of a semester or term. Schools will then hire English teachers to work for a short duration before the next semester, perfect for native-speaking travelers who wish to live in one location for a short period of time.

Depending on the course and school, employers may be looking for applicants with previous teaching experience or a teaching certification like TEFL. It’s usually helpful to find jobs with these kinds of language schools while in the same country. This allows you to go in for an interview and, oftentimes, receive the job offer on the spot!

Universities and colleges are great sources for summer language schools, especially in terms of integrating new students from abroad. For example, UCL’s summer English course is a fantastic opportunity, while Edinburgh College also has excellent teaching facilities and an inclusive outlook.

Cultural/Teacher Exchanges

Explore cultural exchange programs that connect teachers with counterparts in other countries. This can involve collaborative projects, sharing teaching strategies, and gaining insights into different education systems.

These tours often include visits to schools, meetings with local educators, and opportunities to explore the educational system of the host country.

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program is a teacher exchange program sponsored by the US Department of State. It’s a combo of a teacher exchange and study abroad experience where US teachers work abroad and international teachers work in the US. Candidates team teach, observe classes, run workshops, review courses, and work on a long term project. This is a longer program at 3 – 6 months.

Sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania, Keizai Koho  offers two-week summer study tours in Japan with a focus on economics, business, and education. Fellows participate in lectures and visit cultural sites throughout the two weeks. A requirement of the program is to create a lesson plan using what has been learned during the study tour — a small price to pay for a rich educational experience.

The Korea Society  offers study tours in Korea throughout the year. Most mornings consist of lectures, followed by afternoon cultural outings to temples, palaces, schools, and restaurants. Be forewarned: the program requires extensive walking in hot and humid temperatures. Also, the Korea Society will expect you to create a unit on Korean culture or history upon your return to the U.S.A.

The Goethe-Institute is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. They promote the study of German abroad and encourage international cultural exchange.

GEEO  offers discounted group travel for teachers. Founded in 2007, Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has sent over 3,000 teachers worldwide on adventurous travel programs. GEEO’s teacher travel programs are 5 to 23 days long and are designed and discounted to be exciting and affordable for teachers. The trips are open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators, administrators, retired educators, and educators’ guests.

Book Bag Trips hosts trips each year that are a combination of fun and PD. They host trips to places like Disney World, Europe, and Africa. They are a larger company, so they host over 10+ trips each summer.

Fellowships

Some organizations offer global teaching fellowships for educators. These programs often involve a combination of teaching, professional development, and cultural immersion.

Program leader for the CIEE Global Navigator program . CIEE’s program leader position is designed to assist students in exploring a different culture in more than 30 amazing destinations across the world.

The Grosvenor Teacher Fellow program  is a professional development opportunity made possible by a partnership between National Geographic Education and Lindblad Expeditions. The program takes educators, in small groups of two or three, on an all-expenses paid voyage aboard the Lindblad Expeditions flagship National Geographic Explorer.

The Klingenstein Summer Institute gathers 75 teachers from around the world for an exploration of teaching styles, educational philosophies, educational issues, and personal development. Meeting for two weeks in late June, this intensive program offered in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is specially designed to make teachers more effective leaders in the classroom and throughout the school.

International Conferences

Attend international conferences related to education and teaching. These events often bring together professionals from various countries and provide a platform for networking and sharing ideas.

Here are a few places to check for conferences:

  • International Conference Alert
  • All Conference Alert
  • We Are Teachers

There are so many different conferences around the world for education. I recommend researching a conference of interest to you and then using a grant like Fund for Teachers  or IIE to fund your travels to and from the conference.

Before embarking on any summer abroad experience, it’s essential to research and plan carefully, considering factors such as visa requirements, health and safety, and the cultural context of the destination. No matter what you choose, you’re going to have an incredible experience!

A Guide to Teach Abroad Programs

Teaching abroad is an exceptionally fun and fulfilling way to travel, while also gaining skills and connections to build a career with. Due to the demand for English skills worldwide, teaching jobs abroad could take you to almost any corner of the globe! If you’re excited at the possibility of doing meaningful work in an exciting new destination, all the while making incredible new friends and immersing in new cultures (and maybe even earning a handsome paycheck), then it’s time for you to start searching for teaching jobs abroad!

How to teach English abroad

Wondering how to be an English teacher abroad ? Don’t worry—it’s actually fairly straightforward! Here’s a brief overview of how to teach ESL abroad:

  • Get TEFL certified. This is the most basic step in teaching English abroad, since having a TEFL certificate is a prerequisite to finding teaching opportunities abroad in almost every country in the world. You can get certified online or in-person, in as little as 60 hours or as much as 8 weeks! The right certification for you depends on your level of teaching experience, as well as your career goals.
  • Have a degree. Yes, a Bachelor’s degree is required to teach English abroad in most destinations that offer decent pay. However, there are some places where you can teach overseas without a degree . It may be more difficult to earn a living wage though.
  • Apply to teach abroad programs. You can find ESL jobs abroad without a teach abroad program, but it’ll require a lot of research on your part. It can be easy to get scammed or accidentally work illegally if you go it alone, so be sure to consider every detail. On the other hand, teach English abroad programs will find you a reputable placement, and may even secure a salary on your behalf!
  • Pick a destination. English teachers are needed practically everywhere in the world, so the destination is up to you! Maybe you have certain travel aspirations or dreams that you would like to fulfill. If so, that’s a good place to start!
  • Get your visa and passport. Again, teaching abroad programs will help with a lot of the work and logistics involved with getting a valid work visa for teaching English abroad, and can even assist you in applying for a passport if you don’t have one. Otherwise, make sure you qualify for a visa that will allow you to legally teach English in your destination— especially if you intend to earn a wage.

Why teach English abroad?

Teaching English abroad isn’t necessarily hard , but it’s also not for everyone. So why do it? Is it the right move for you ? You should teach English abroad if you’re committed to traveling the world in a sustainable, meaningful way, and/or if you want some truly invaluable teaching experience in order to build your career as an English teacher abroad . Teaching English abroad is worth it for those who are hardworking, flexible, and adaptable, and for those who want truly authentic dives into new cultures. Be ready to learn and grow!

Requirements to teach English abroad

What qualifications do you need to be a teacher abroad? Usually, the most basic requirements to teach English abroad include a TEFL certificate and a four-year degree. Here’s what you need to teach English abroad :

  • TEFL certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree (sometimes).
  • Native-level English fluency.
  • Teaching experience (sometimes).
  • A valid visa and passport.

Teaching English abroad requirements aren’t extensive, but some of them can be challenging to fulfill. For example, in certain destinations that require a degree, they may specifically require an education or teaching degree. If you think you don’t qualify to teach English abroad, it can help to start with volunteer teaching opportunities instead.

How much can you make teaching English abroad?

You can make a living teaching English abroad ! In the UAE, you can earn up to $3000 per month or more teaching English. However, in regions like Southeast Asia or Central America, wages may be comparatively lower. You can 100% live off the wage you earn teaching abroad, but how much it pays depends on where you’re teaching and what your previous experience is.

Where to teach English abroad

As previously mentioned, you can teach English abroad pretty much anywhere. Are you looking for the best countries to teach English and save money ? Then we suggest heading to countries like South Korea or China, where you can earn a great wage and manage your living expenses more effectively. However, it’s not uncommon to teach English in countries all around Africa, South America, and Europe!

Program FAQs

What is a Teach Abroad program?

Teach Abroad programs are structured programs that provide placement in schools throughout the countries we work in. These programs provide an ample amount of support and is a service for those who don’t feel comfortable finding work on their own. Programs will all have arrival orientations, a job and housing set up for you, 24/7 in-country staff and other perks like insurance, visa assistance and an alumni community. Each program has their own inclusions, so be sure to read the specific details for the program you’re interested in.

Teaching abroad is an incredible way to fully immerse yourself in a new country and culture by becoming part of your community for a significant amount of time as opposed to passing through on vacation.  Greenheart Travel’s teaching opportunities vary in destinations, contracts and start dates. We are here to find what program will work best for you!

Do I have to be able to speak the language of the country I teach in?

No! It is not necessary to speak the local language of any of the programs we offer. In fact, the schools prefer that you only use English in the classroom to create a complete immersion experience for the students. However, having some knowledge of the local language will, of course, benefit your day-to-day life, help you negotiate, understand the culture and allow you to connect with your students and people in your community. You will receive some introductory lessons to the language during orientation, and your fellow teachers would love to help you learn the language once you are at your school!

Can I choose where I’m placed in the country I am going to?

This depends on the specific program you are applying to, but generally, you will not have a choice as to where you are placed. We take into account any requests and do our best to accommodate everyone’s wishes, but placements largely depend on demand in specific areas and which schools are interested in hiring you.

Will I be alone?

This completely depends on the placement, but most people have friends or other English teachers close by. Every placement is going to vary. Some teachers are at the same school as up to 5-10 other foreign teachers, but some teachers might be at their school as the only foreign English teacher.

Can I apply with a friend, spouse, or significant other?

Yes, you can definitely apply together! However, whether or not you will end up being placed together depends on the country and your flexibility. We guarantee that can place people together for Vietnam, Myanmar, and Thailand. Programs that provide accommodation with host families generally cannot place friends or couples together, as most families only have enough room for one teacher, but you can still apply together and live with different families.

Do I have to find my own accommodation?

No. Whether you are doing a homestay, host family, or classroom teach abroad Greenheart Travel will assist in getting you a place to stay.

Can I bring a pet or child?

No, you cannot bring your children or pets. The programs are not structured to accommodate dependents as there are many other logistics to keep in mind that we cannot guarantee we can meet. If you are bringing a pet or child with you abroad, it may be best to consider finding work on your own so you can guarantee proper housing, childcare, schooling, etc.

Application Process

Please note the process is a little bit different for each program. For most programs, however, the process is as follows.

1.   Start Your Application  Here .  You will be sent more information as well as the link to our application portal to begin your formal application.

2. Submit Basic Program Information:  The first step in our application portal will be basic things like your chosen start date, etc.

3. Submit your deposit :  A $300 deposit is required in order to apply for the program. This is subtracted from your total program fee. If we are unable to accept you following your interview (very unlikely!) we will refund your deposit  in full.

4.   Complete Application & Documents :  Provide more detailed information about yourself in Part 2 of the application. In this section, you’ll tell us more information like your work history, motivations for joining the program, travel history, and emergency contacts. You will also submit your documents (below) within your portal account.

5.   Skype Interview:  Once you have submitted your online application and paid your application deposit, you will be asked to schedule a video interview with a Greenheart Travel representative.

6. You’re Accepted!  Woohoo! We are usually able to accept people within 1-2 weeks of their interviews.

7. Commitment Deposit:  Once you are accepted to the program, you will need to submit a $300 commitment deposit within 14 days to confirm your spot on the program. Once you submit your commitment deposit you will unlock the acceptance portion of your portal, which includes things like pre-departure videos, travel and arrival information, the Greenheart Travel Atlas, and more.

9. Book your flights, and get ready for your adventure!  Your final remaining balance will be due 60 days before you leave.

What is teaching abroad?

Do you want to work overseas, but you don’t have much professional experience? If you speak English, you have one of the most desirable skills to work in some non English speaking countries. You can use this skill all over the world to teach English as a valid and meaningful occupation earning a generous salary to fund your travels (and life). Our Teach trips give you the chance to take part in a 3-4 week class-based TEFL or TESOL course where you’ll learn how to teach English to foreign students. You’ll be provided with accommodation, transfers and cultural activities and excursions throughout your course. Upon completion, you’ll be awarded an internationally-recognised accreditation which will give you the freedom to teach and travel all over the world or land a local teaching placement. You may enjoy it so much that you take it up as a long term career as there is growth potential! Most of our English teaching trips are in destinations where your dollar will go far to experience more - from cheap exotic food and booze to transportation, you’ll be able to party hard and travel loads when not teaching.

If you’ve ever wondered how to get a job teaching English abroad, wonder no more. This is your chance to take a break from your routine back home, connect with a new community, challenge yourself in an exciting way and, most importantly, return home feeling proud of the positive impact you’ve made on someone’s education.

Travel Grants and Fellowships for Educators

Money is available to help fund teachers’ professional trips. Here are some resources to help you find and apply for grants and fellowships.

Standing on a boat overlooking a sea of ice

Summer is the perfect time to research and apply for a teacher travel grant. The key is to look in the right places and write a compelling application. Once you win an award, you might find yourself kayaking the length of the Mississippi River while developing a river ecology unit. (At least, that’s what one teacher did with a Fund for Teachers grant.)

To help you get started, here are some tips for writing winning proposals, a few inspiring articles, and a list of interesting travel grants that you might want to research or apply for this summer.

The Best Places to Look

Edutopia has covered travel grants in the past. Be sure to check out other content on the subject, including “ Five-Minute Film Festival: Travel for Teachers ” and “ No-Cost Teacher Travel ” for more grant-writing tips and funding sources.

Also, the Institute for International Education is an organization that anyone interested in educational travel should get to know. In addition to administering tons of interesting travel grant programs, the IIE is a source for research, policy updates, and opportunities for teachers and working professionals.

Some available grants and fellowships:

  • Grosvenor Teacher Fellowships From National Geographic : Each year, National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions take K–12 geography teachers on expeditions around the world. In general, about 25 educators from the U.S. and Canada are selected for fellowship trips each year, and participants travel to exotic locales and participate in professional development and curriculum-building activities. Applications for 2018 expeditions open in November.
  • Fund for Teachers Fellowships : Fund for Teachers fellowships enable U.S. educators to design their own professional development programs. International and domestic travel are often included in grant proposals, and FFT has been supporting these grants for U.S. educators since 2001. Additionally, FFT has links to some other great travel fellowships. Applications open in October 2017.
  • Teachers for Global Classrooms Program From IREX : This Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs program, administered by IREX, is a year-long cultural exchange for U.S. elementary, middle school, and high school teachers. The program includes intensive training, an international field experience, and a global education symposium in Washington, DC. Applications open in December 2017.
  • Grants to Travel to Polar Regions From PolarTREC : PolarTREC offers annual grants to U.S. 6–12 teachers that enable them to spend three to six weeks in polar regions and participate in field research projects. Since the program’s launch in 2007, teachers have traveled to Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica and have studied a range of science-related topics, including wetland dynamics and coastal ecology. The application process for next year’s expeditions will open this summer.
  • Teacher at Sea Grants From NOAA : Since 1990, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher at Sea program has enabled more than 600 teachers to sail aboard NOAA research ships and gain hands-on research experience. The program is open to U.S.-based K–12 and college educators, and participants study oceanic and atmospheric science alongside NOAA scientists. Applications for the 2018 program will open in late 2017.
  • Teach Earth Conservation Research Grants : The Earthwatch Institute’s Teach Earth program offers U.S. K–12 educators the chance to support conservation projects in natural locations around the world. In addition to research, educators also participate in science learning and professional development. To be notified when applications open, educators must fill out an interest form; qualified teachers will be invited to complete a full application, due in late 2017.
  • German Study Tours From Goethe-Institut : Every year, the Goethe-Institut offers U.S. and Canadian social studies and STEM educators the opportunity to travel through Germany on two-week excursions. During the tours, “each corner of Germany is sampled through sight, sound, touch, and taste.” Applications for the 2018 program will be released in October.
  • Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows Program in STEM : The Einstein program enables U.S. teachers to advocate for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) on Capitol Hill and/or in congressional offices for up to a year. The application process for the 2017–18 school year is closed; the application process for 2018–19 will open in late summer.

How to Get a Teacher Travel Grant

Are you an art teacher longing to see the art treasures of Florence, Paris or Beijing? Are you a language teacher desiring to visit one or more of the countries where the language you teach is spoken? Teacher travel grants can make such trips possible.

What is a teacher travel grant?

Travel grants help U.S. teachers travel overseas on short-term visits to experience new cultures and explore new ideas. It’s not a vacation: Educators usually explore different instructional methods and broaden their horizons through cultural and academic immersion programs.

Government organizations, private companies and non-profit international organizations sponsor travel grants for teachers. Some programs give the money to the teacher; others pay expenses directly. Some programs are teacher exchanges where a teacher from overseas goes to your school while you teach at their school; with others, you travel independently.

Types of travel grants

Grants usually target a subject area or emphasize specific research or professional development goals. While some grants have a wide, general focus like a student exchange programs, others function as travel-work or teach-abroad programs.

Grant requirements

Limitations and requirements on grants run a wide gamut. For instance:

  • Grants may be designed for teachers in high schools, middle schools or elementary school teachers.
  • Some teacher travel grants pay only partial amounts, while others cover round-trip airfare plus boarding, food and incidental expenses.
  • Most grant terms last six to eight weeks, though a handful of highly selective programs offer travel grants of up to six months.
  • Grant travel usually happens in the summer when school is out.

Who offers teacher travel grants?

Numerous travel grants are available to teachers in U.S. public and private schools. Here are a few notable programs:

Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program

This highly competitive and selective travel grant is available through the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Awards. It’s open to teachers, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors, special education coordinators and librarians.

If you’re selected, you can spend three to six months in an overseas school, university or research center. You’ll also be required to work at least some time in a local school in the host country. You’ll also have to complete a “Capstone Project” that benefits students in your home schools. The grant pays all travel expenses, lodging, programs costs and tuition fees and other costs.

Visit the site .

National Endowment for the Humanities

This federally funded program offers up to $6,000 for travel expenses for teachers wishing to do summer research in their field both in the United States and abroad. The NEH also offers a “Summer Seminars and Institutes” program in the US and abroad, where teachers join organized continuing education programs. As you would expect, this is a highly competitive program.

Earthwatch Institute

Earthwatch offers field enrichment trips to teachers in grades K-12. More than 90 destinations are offered, both in the US and in other countries. You’ll get to work alongside experts in your field doing important work. All expenses are covered at the destination and some trips offer a stipend to cover travel to and from the destination. After the trip, teachers are expected to develop a lesson plan about the subject of their trip and share their experiences with others in their community.

Teachers for Global Classrooms Project (TGC Project)

The TGC Project travel grant is available to secondary school teachers in the United States. The International Research and Exchange Board (IREX), a non-profit organization that operates under the aegis of the Bureau of Education and Cultural Awards, manages the TGC Project.

The program offers a fully paid, two- or three-week international fellowship in countries including India, Ghana, Brazil, Indonesia and Ukraine. Teachers graduate with a deeper understanding of international pedagogy. To qualify for the fellowship, teachers must successfully complete an online course and attend a Global Education Symposium in Washington, D.C.

American Councils Exchange Program

American Councils offers a program known as “Educational Seminars” that pays for U.S. educators to participate in short-term teacher-exchange programs in other countries. The program helps teachers broaden their horizons by learning about the culture, teaching methodologies, educational system and social mores in different countries.

Teachers must have at least three years of experience to apply. Educational seminars are available in China, India, Brazil and Portugal. The program pays for all travel, lodging and program-related expenses.

Fund for Teachers

Fund for Teachers, a private non-profit foundation, provides travel fellowships for close to 500 teachers each year. The program allows teachers to propose international projects that they think will benefit them professionally and have an impact on their students.

The fund provides grants of up to $5,000 to teachers whose proposals are accepted. Teams can receive a grant of up to $10,000 under the program. Since 2001, Fund for Teachers has provided travel grants to nearly 5,000 teachers and has approved fellowships in more than 120 countries around the world.

Applying for teacher travel grants

Each travel grant program has its own deadline and requirements. Generally, teachers need to have at least a few years’ teaching experience. Programs are offered that augment virtually any teacher’s base of knowledge.

Many more travel grants are available to educators. If you’re interested in pursuing these opportunities, keep these points in mind.

  • Institutions offering grants start accepting applications well in advance of when they become available, often six months before the program starts.
  • Though most grants are open to all U.S. educators, they are also highly competitive.
  • Applications usually require a detailed listing of qualifications and experience and a well-reasoned explanation of the projected benefits of traveling abroad on a teacher travel grant.

Don’t think that just because you are living on a teacher’s salary and supporting a family that overseas travel is beyond your means. Well-traveled teachers make better teachers, and there are dozens of organizations that will help make such an experience possible for you.

Keen to teach English abroad? These are the places you’ll get paid the most

T eaching English as a foreign language - better known as TEFL - has become a popular route for travellers wanting to spend an extended stint abroad.

The practice actually dates back to 1862, when China opened the first institute for teaching English as part of its Westernisation movement.

In 2024, TEFL is a popular career option, especially for young, English-speaking Europeans who want to travel and broaden their horizons while educating people abroad and earning cash along the way.

These are the most lucrative places worldwide to teach English abroad - and what it’s actually like to take on the job.

TEFL-certified teachers are in particularly high demand in Asia and the Middle East

Research undertaken by the TEFL Academy , the world’s first TEFL course provider to receive official recognition from government-regulated awarding bodies in both the USA and the UK, reveals which countries offer the highest paid teaching jobs.

Prospective teachers taking the academy’s courses will graduate with a globally recognised Level 3 certificate, which takes 120 hours of study, or a Level 5 Diploma, which takes 168 hours.

That means they can apply to nearly 3,000 vacancies on the online TEFL jobs board and join a global community of over 200,000 TEFL teachers.

But where are these graduates likely to find the highest paying TEFL jobs?

Although China has had an established TEFL presence for decades, it still has a high demand for English teachers.

If you fancy spending time in China while teaching, you can expect to earn between €1,165 and €2,333 per month.

In South Korea, that figure rises to between €1,750 and €2,450, while in Japan you could net anything from €1635 to €2333.

The top two most lucrative places, though, can provide wages to rival many jobs - and have the possibility of paying more than full time teacher gigs in Europe.

In Taiwan, some TEFL teachers may earn between €1,868 and €3,500 every month.

It’s even higher if you choose to teach in the Gulf Arab States . Also starting from €1,868, some could earn as much as €4,668 per month.

That list is not exhaustive though, with TEFL-certified teachers in high demand across Asia, specifically China, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, as well as Latin America and parts of the Middle East.

All of those regions have accredited English language programmes in schools and language institutes, meaning they are legitimate organisations.

What’s it like to teach at a TEFL school?

TEFL is well known for offering flexibility with full-time, part-time and freelance opportunities, including both in-person and online work.

Short term roles as TEFL teachers are common but there are also long-term career opportunities on offer.

If you’ve ever wondered what the day-to-day life of one of these teachers is like, the TEFL Academy has answers.

It has introduced TEFL Tales, a series that features some of its British graduates who have gone abroad to teach English.

Many of them use their new jobs as not just an opportunity to earn money and help people learn English, but to visit surrounding countries, too. These are some of their stories.

Aoife Hynes taught English in Poland . “Eastern Europe was inexpensive and getting from one country to another was a veritable piece of cake,” she says. “Within a month I had seen Slovakia, where I caught up with old friends, and Vienna, Austria, a city of childhood dreams. By Easter I was in Hungary and the Czech Republic. Before the school year was out I had seen Belarus (my first foray beyond the EU).”

In Poland, she’s enjoyed visiting Krakow and Zakopane to the south” which boast “mountains, sheep’s cheese, hiking”.

She also recommends visits to Warsaw for “the history”, as well as “Torun with its mediaeval walls. Gdansk by the Baltic Sea and the Brobdingnagian castle at Malbork. Arty Poznan in the west.”

Caitlin Beck is teaching in Guinea . “English classes in Guinea are very different from those given in Western classrooms,” she says. “We have no smart boards, iPads, computers, or internet, and so I need to plan my lessons carefully to ensure I bring all the relevant teaching materials with me.”

She says she enjoys using a traditional blackboard, which is “somewhat of a novelty these days, in most of Europe.”

“Daily I have to adapt to unique circumstances, such as the extreme heat in the classroom, by thinking on my feet, and taking the lesson outdoors,” Caitlin explains. “Having a bank of ideas in the back of my mind for EFL games that I can use with my students helps in these scenarios.”

In Vietnam , teacher Daniel Owen has taken the chance to use his 10 months in the Asian country to explore the region.

“I’ve managed to visit Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore and Bangkok a few times for weekend trips.”

He explains that the salary for English teachers in Vietnam compared to the cost of living is “pretty great”. “Even with those trips and a few other splurges, I’ve managed to save enough money for a three-month adventure during the summer break,” he says.

His favourite thing about teaching in Vietnam though?

“The school sleeps at lunchtime; that’s right, we have nap-time… nap-time is so under-rated in the UK!”

Teaching English as a foreign language can be a fun - and lucrative - career choice
