Roaming abroad using EE? Find out how you can get the most of your data

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, surcharge-free roaming is a thing of the past. Mobile operators are now steadily beginning to introduce new mobile roaming policies, and EE was the first to reintroduce roaming costs with changes that affected all recently subscribed customers on 3 March.

Depending on your current plan, and when you joined EE, existing customers may have to pay a daily fee in order to use your mobile services abroad and in Europe, too. Want to avoid a whopping great big bill? Here we’ll explain everything you need to know before you use your phone abroad.

EE Roaming charges explained: What about existing customers?

If you joined the EE network prior to 7 July 2021, and you’re on a monthly handset or SIM plan, then there are currently no changes to your roaming allowances.

If you’re on a tablet, laptop, mobile broadband or data SIM plan and you enrolled before 18 August 2021, these changes will also not affect you.

If you joined after those dates, there is a standard £2 fee per day if you use any of your allocated data, minutes or texts whilst in any of the 47 EU countries. The full list of countries is available on EE’s website . The exemption is the Republic of Ireland, where you only have to pay the £2 fee if you go over your allowance for the day.

EE Roaming charges explained: What about buying data packs?

Existing EE customers can buy the Travel Data Pass, which starts at £5 a day for 500MB in the US and Canada, and £6.27 a day for other areas and data amounts. This can be purchased easily via text once you run out of data.

EE Roaming charges explained: What about other plans?

Previously, customers have been able to buy what’s called the Roam Further pass to use roaming and mobile services whilst travelling abroad. The Roam Further pass has been replaced by the Roam Abroad pass which costs £10/mth and allows you to use your standard minutes, texts and data in the following countries: USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand in addition to the 47 EU countries where fees are introduced.

You can either get the Roam Abroad pass as a chargeable standalone add-on via text, or you can choose to add it as a smart benefit, should you have a Full Works or Smart plan. It’s still possible to buy data packs if you’re on the Roam Abroad pass if you run out.

EE roaming charges explained: How to avoid using data abroad

Whether you are travelling for your holidays or for business, it’s a good idea to use available Wi-Fi networks whenever you can, such as in hotels, cafes or public Wi-Fi hotspots. Many pubs and bars have Wi-Fi available, too. Additionally, there are options you can disable to make sure your phone doesn’t use up available data without your permission:

Automatic updates : Remember to turn off any automatic updates on your phone that might use data, and be wary of social media apps and games that might stream video which requires a lot of bandwidth, or start high capacity downloads that will also drain your daily allowance.

Wi-Fi assist : Sometimes this feature will use data to assist in searches where your Wi-Fi coverage is low, unnecessarily using data when you only want to use Wi-Fi.

EE’s website also suggests making sure texts aren’t longer than 160 characters, as anything beyond that will count as two texts.

EE makes roaming in USA and 10 other countries way easier

EE has overhauled the way it charges customers to use mobile data when they’re abroad, introducing a brand new ‘Travel Data Pass’.

The Travel Data Pass replaces the old Euro Data Pass, and extends EE’s service to a further 11 countries, all of which are outside of Europe – hence the name change. Starting today, EE customers will be able to use the Travel Data Pass in the following additional countries: United States, Canada, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, India, Thailand, Mexico, South Africa, and China.

Like the Euro Data Pass, the Travel Data Pass is an opt-in subscription that charges you a fee each day you’re in a country. For £3 per day, you’ll get 500MB to spend daily in Europe, while £4 will net you the same amount of data in the USA and Canada. And the other nine countries are charged at a £5-per-day rate with the same amount of data.

If you’re already subscribed to the Euro Data Pass, you’ll be automatically transferred to the Travel Data Pass, and will start getting the benefits as soon as you travel to a listed country. And if you’ve yet to sign up, you can opt in by texting the word TRAVEL to 150. You don’t need to remove it when you come back to the UK – you won’t be charged if you’re using your phone on British soil.

“Whether you’re planning on celebrating New Year in Times Square, getting away from the cold with some sun Down Under, or sampling the Hamburg Christmas markets, you can relax and post photos on Facebook or Instagram, and send messages via WhatsApp – with no surprise bills when you get back,” explains EE.

Here’s a full list of the European countries covered by the Travel Data Pass: Austria, Azores, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Guiana (France), Germany, Gibraltar, Luxembourg, Madeira, Malta, Martinique, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion Islands, Romania, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Vatican City.

In countries that aren’t part of the Travel Data Pass scheme, you’ll still need to opt into a specific bundle when you’re attempting to roam.

EE launches new ‘Euro pass’ & ‘Euro data pass’ − a more relaxing way to travel this summer

EE, the UK’s most advanced digital communications company, today launched  ‘ Euro Pass’, offering customers the option of unlimited calls and texts, and a data allowance (with 4G where available) each day when abroad in Europe – for just £4 a day.

Available to EE Pay Monthly, SIM Only and small business customers, with Euro Pass there is now no need to get separate talk, text and data add-ons when heading across the Channel. Customers on 4GEE Extra plans who already benefit from unlimited calls and texts in 39 Europe Zone destinations*  can now add the Euro Data Pass to get 100MB of data for just £3 a day.

With Euro Pass, customers get unlimited calls and texts to standard UK and Europe Zone numbers so customers can call home to let their parents know they arrived safely as well as book a table at a local restaurant for the evening.

With both Euro Pass and Euro Data Pass, if a customer needs more than their 100MB full-speed allowance, they will receive 400MB at no extra charge for browsing, messaging and using social media at a slower speed. Alternatively they can choose from one of EE’s great value roaming data add-ons. The customer is always in control and they can’t run over their allowance, so they’ll never get an unexpected bill.

What’s more, EE’s new passes are all on top of customers’ home allowances, meaning the minutes, texts and data used abroad don’t come out of their UK monthly plan allowance or incur out of bundle charges.

EE customers can opt-in any time - in the UK before they travel or when they’re abroad – by texting EUROPASS or EURODATA to 150. Once it’s added to their account, customers only pay on days they use their phone in EE’s Europe Zone, so there’s no need to take it off when they come home.

The new passes add to EE’s range of roaming offers for Europe and the Rest of the World. With EE’s roaming data add-ons you only ever pay for what you choose – there are no run on rates and no unexpected data roaming charges. This summer, EE has also introduced new data add-ons outside Europe starting from £5.

In addition to EE’s Euro Pass for consumers and small business customers, EE offers 4G roaming in over 45 destinations worldwide. EE also offers 4G roaming in a growing list of countries to corporate customers as well, providing superfast data speeds overseas with excellent value and cost control thanks to new EE Business Data Traveller plans. For more information on roaming for corporate customers, please visit http://www.ee.co.uk/corporateroaming

For more information on using an EE phone abroad and all of EE’s add-ons and standard roaming rates around the world, visit www.ee.co.uk/roaming or www.ee.co.uk/businessabroad for small business customers.

EE Expands Roaming Options And Introduces Travel Data Pass

EE looks to challenge Three in the European roaming stakes

EE has replaced its Euro Data Pass European roaming service with Travel Data Pass, a service offering mobile broadband access while abroad below the normal steep rates charged by operators.

The new mobile data option expands beyond European countries and into popular tourist destinations such as the USA, Canada, Thailand and Australia.

The service looks to bring some competition against Three’s ‘Feel at Home’ option , which gives its customers the option to use their data, messaging and voice services at the same rate as they would pay in the UK when they are abroad in on of 42 qualifying destinations.

EE Travel Data Pass

Aeroplane

Even at £3 a day, 500MB of data allowance might not seem like much at all. However, the proliferation of Wi-Fi hotspots, despite security concerns , means that most people are never too far away from free access to the internet. SO the service would appear to be a boon for frequent flyers for business, where having access to mobile internet on the go, where Wi-Fi delivery is not always ideal, could see the difference between then relying to an urgent email whereby the company’s decisions determines success or failure.

EE customers can also purchase ‘add-ons’ for their mobile plan which offers a veritable plethora of data roaming options, ranging from a steep £5 for a day’s access to 5MB, to £5 for 20MB.

“Current users of the Euro Data Pass will be automatically transferred over to Travel Data Pass and enjoy these new benefits when they next travel to any of the listed countries,” said EE.

“To opt-in to Travel Data Pass benefits, EE customers should simply text the word TRAVEL to 150 using their phone and they will automatically be enrolled for the duration of their contract. There is no need to remove it upon return to the UK and users will only be charged on the days they use mobile data abroad in an included country.”

EE new roaming options could be seen as an attempt to win back favour after problems with its network blighted the ability for its customers to make calls, send texts and access data abroad .

Roaming in Ireland

You don’t need to do anything to roam in Ireland.

Calls, texts and data in the Republic of Ireland are included in the allowance of every EE Business plan. • We’ll add any £2.15 daily charges to your bill automatically.

Roaming anywhere else around the world

All EE Business customers pay standard roaming charges for calls and texts when outside of the UK, Ireland or our Europe Zone. Check the  Roaming Services  section on  Out of bundle charges  to see what you’ll pay.

If you’re happy to pay standard roaming charges for calls and texts, you don’t need to do anything.  However, we offer add-ons so you can roam and save in countries around the world.

No EE Business plan includes mobile data outside our Europe Zone as standard. So if you want to use mobile data outside our Europe Zone, you’ll need to take action before you travel.  You can choose from a range of add-ons to use mobile data outside our Europe Zone.

On an All Rounder plan or  Full Works plan ? You can choose an Inclusive Extra to roam in EU, USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, China and South Africa. On any other EE Business plan? You can choose a Business Daily Passport or a World Daily Passport to pay a fixed price for calls, texts and data each day. Regardless of your plan or add-ons purchased, there is a 50GB data per month fair usage policy. If you go over this limit, your service may be limited.

The following 47 EU countries are included with BT Roam Like Home, and belong to Zone 1a and Zone 1b:

Countries outside the UK are grouped via zones.

If you go over your allowance in an European Roam Like Home country, or you use BT Mobile in another international country not covered by Roam Like Home, you will be charged at an out of plan rate.

It is important to plan ahead and track your data usage, as the out of plan rates can be very expensive.
