San Francisco's Umbrella Alley Is Instagram Bait, but We Love It Anyway

U mbrella Alley sounds like a place in London where Hogwarts students might go to peruse muggle paraphernalia. It’s actually an interactive mural exhibition in San Francisco , but the open-air art gallery does have a couple of things in common with the shopping lanes of the Potterverse. For one, you might not realize it’s tucked away in Fisherman’s Wharf unless you know to look for it. (Hint: Look for psychedelic sidewalk chalk and a ceiling of balloons.) Like the wizarding world, it’s also pretty darn magical.

Part of what makes Umbrella Alley San Francisco so magical is that most of the murals are designed to be posed with — readymade backdrops for your Instagram feed that also homage the Bay Area. Read on to find out where you can track down the whimsical artworks, what to expect when you get there, and how to make the most of your visit.

Where is Umbrella Alley San Francisco, and how do I get there?

Umbrella Alley is located at 757 Beach Street between Hyde and Larkin, smack in the center of some of San Francisco’s most iconic attractions. It’s across from Aquatic Park on the San Francisco Bay, a stone’s throw from points of interest such as Ghiradelli Square and Pier 39, surrounded by must-see museums including Madame Tussauds and Musee Mechanique, and wedged between two bike rental shops, one of which is San Francisco favorite Blazing Saddles.

Capitalizing on its attraction-packed location, Umbrella Alley has partnered with multiple local operators to double as a launching point for bike, segway, jeep, and tuk-tuk tours of the city if you’d like to see more than the murals. No need to arrange a tour in advance — excursions are bookable on site.

Greetings from San Francisco

umbrella-alley-greetings-from-san-francisco

A nod to the stylings of mid-20th century postcards, this Maxfield Bala mural is quickly becoming a San Francisco attraction in its own right, but it’s also a roadmap to the rest of the city’s greatest hits. Classic landmarks such as the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Palace of Fine Arts, Painted Ladies, Ferry Building, Alcatraz, Lombard Street, and Coit Tower are illustrated within each of the letters.

See the World

umbrella-alley-see-the-world

A collaboration by muralists 3Nolam and Brian Huber, this piece looks beyond the Bay Area depicting a giant pair of eyes surrounded by signs for global destinations in the shape of eyebrows and the bridge of a nose. It never loses sight of San Francisco, however, with the Golden Gate Bridge reflected in each of the irises.

San Francisco Homies

umbrella-alley-san-francisco-homies

The work of street artist Yonmeister, Yon for short, this is one of the first murals you see when you enter Umbrella Alley. The cartoon-style portrait of San Francisco residents donning Bay Area-inspired headwear is spray-painted on the side of a purple staircase. Stand beneath the “I heart SF” pin to snap a photos as one of the homies.

Summer of Love Monarch Wall

umbrella-alley-summer-of-love-monarch

This mural by Maxfield Bala and Jeremy Novy lets you wear the wings of a giant monarch butterfly — only instead of realistic black-and-white coloring, the monarch’s wings feature psychedelic designs. The patterns are reminiscent of street art you might see in Haight Ashbury, the epicenter of San Francisco’s counterculture movement in the 1960s and 1970s. The mural’s name, the Summer of Love, references the height of the Haight’s hippie days in 1967.

I Left My Heart in San Francisco

umbrella-alley-i-left-my-heart-in-san-francisco

Originally, this piece by Brian Huber was presented like a bouquet of heart-shaped ballons that you could pretend to hold by the strings. Now, the individual hearts are clustered like a cloud next to a yellow GoCar, a type of three-wheeled rental vehicle that tourists are regularly spotted driving around Fisherman’s Wharf. The multicolored heart in the front was created by a different artist, Kate Tova, and matches a larger spray-painted version of the same design near the alley’s entrance.

Fisherman’s Wharf Honey Bear

umbrella-alley-honey-bear

A few years ago, street artist fnnch’s honey bear swept the Bay Area. You’ll see the figure plastered in the windows of stores and homes, stenciled on city walls, and stickered to bumpers and signposts all over San Francisco. The honey bears might be wearing masks, painted rainbow, sporting Black Lives Matter merch, dressed in Ruth Bader Ginsberg accessories, or otherwise adapted to represent causes the Bay Area generally backs. In honor of Fisherman’s Wharf, Umbrella Alley’s honey bear has bright red Dungeness crabs for hands.

California Dreaming

umbrella-alley-california-dreaming

Twelve muralists came together to create this massive mural on the back wall of the covered section of Umbrella Alley. Each letter in the word California was painted by a different artist.

umbrella-alley-gats

Oakland-based artist GATS (“graffiti against the system”) is behind this mask mural. In fact, it’s their signature design. Different versions of the all-seeing bearded figure appear all over the Bay Area, while other works by GATS have popped up everywhere from Palestine to the Philippines.

Biscoff Coffee Corner : If you’re among the travelers who obsess over the Biscoff cookies that some American airlines serve during flights, you’re not going to want to leave Fisherman’s Wharf without stopping at this cafe at Pier 39. Every coffee drink comes with a complimentary Biscoff cookie — imported straight from Belgium.

Where: 213 Pier 39, San Francisco, CA 94133

Boudin at the Wharf : Boudin Bakery is touted as San Francisco’s oldest operating business. It’s also credited with originating San Francisco’s sourdough habit. The bakery has been churning out sourdough loaves since 1849 and still incorporates a piece of the original starter into every loaf made today. Part market, part cafe, part espresso bar, and part full-service restaurant, Boudin at the Wharf is the brand’s flagship store.

Where: 160 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133

Buena Vista Cafe : Legend has it that the former owner of Buena Vista Cafe was responsible for bringing Irish coffee to the United States in 1952. The cafe’s history can be traced back even further to 1916 when the first floor of the building, then a boardinghouse, was turned into a saloon called The Buena Vista. These days, you can stop by the cafe for breakfast, lunch dinner, and of course drinks.

Where: 2765 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Ghiradelli : Walk to the end of Beach Street toward Larkin from Umbrella Alley and you’ll hit Ghiradelli Square, a local landmark that’s named for the chocolate company. There, you’ll find three different Ghiradelli storefronts — the original ice cream and chocolate shop, the chocolate experience, and an on-the-go shop — as well as a handful of unrelated shops and restaurants.

Where: Corner of Beach Street and Larkin Street

Gary Danko : Lo and behold, one of the least expensive Michelin-starred restaurants in California is just a block away from Umbrella Alley. Gary Dank has been operating in Fisherman’s Wharf for more than 20 years and has been a mainstay of San Francisco’s fine dining scene every since.

Where: 800 North Point St, San Francisco, CA 94109

In-N-Out : There’s not much to say about In-N-Out that hasn’t already been said, nor about California’s obsession with the fast food joint. But we’d be remiss not to mention the fact that one of the most convenient In-N-Out locations in San Francisco is located in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Where: 333 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133

Scoma’s Restaurant : Seafood restaurants are a dime a dozen in Fisherman’s Wharf, but Scoma’s stands out among the average tourist trap crab shack. Choose between a sit-down meal at the waterfront restaurant or a to-go option from the marketplace — either way, order something with Dungeness crab in true San Francisco fashion.

Where: 1965 Al Scoma Way, San Francisco, CA 94133

San Francisco Brewing Company : San Francisco Brewing Company doesn’t get as much press as other Bay Area brewers like Fort Point, but it’s a well-liked craft brewery with a beloved beer garden, complete with firepits and outdoor games. The 12,000-square-foot brewery is located within Ghiradelli Square.

H ow did Umbrella Alley get created? Umbrella Alley Rises from the Pandemic

Umbrella Alley took that inspiration and created a happy, joyful space for visitors and locals alike. It began as a few murals in a festive atmosphere and gradually expanded to include colorful umbrellas and balloons from our friends in Portugal. As months turned into years, the erratic economy affected artists more severely, and the Alley’s mission became clear: to support Bay Area artists by hiring them to create these spectacular works.

Initially designed and funded by the owner of the two sightseeing tour companies San Francisco Electric Tour Company and San Francisco Jeep Tours that are based in the Alley, Umbrella Alley now thrives thanks to visitors from around the world.

Umbrella Alley is always evolving. Watch for new murals.

Special thanks go to the building landlords, the Davis family, and the neighbors, the Olson family, for graciously allowing and encouraging the colorful use of their space.

Help keep the Umbrella Alley mission alive by donating what you can. Support our local muralists!

Umbrella Alley ‘s inception was part of a broader initiative to revitalize and inject vibrancy into San Francisco’s urban spaces. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project transformed a once-overlooked passageway into a captivating exhibit of public art. The alley’s signature feature, a canopy of colorful umbrellas, coupled with the surrounding murals by San Francisco artists, was designed to create an immersive experience that celebrates creativity and community spirit.

Today, Umbrella Alley is a kaleidoscope of color and creativity, featuring work from local and international artists. The alley serves not just as a thoroughfare but as a gallery of sorts, where art is accessible to all. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to public art and its ability to transform spaces into vibrant centers of cultural expression.

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco: Where to Find the Greetings from San Francisco Mural and More!

last Updated: April 13, 2023 california Northern California san francisco

FYI: Affiliate links may be sprinkled throughout the awesome, free content you see below. I’ll receive a small commission when you purchase from my links (at no extra cost to you), which I’ll totally blow on adult things like boba tea and avocado toast. As always, thanks for the support.

Visiting the City by the Bay and looking for some fun, interactive murals for your IG feed? Don’t miss Umbrella Alley in San Francisco — it’s where you’ll find the Greetings from San Francisco mural and lots more! Here’s everything you need to know about this colorful little alleyway in Fisherman’s Wharf!

The first time I visited Umbrella Alley, it was half completed. I recently returned for a second (and third!) visit, and there’s now lots more to see! I’ll definitely be taking friends and family to Umbrella Alley when they come to visit San Francisco. But what is it exactly?! It’s a colorful hub of (free) interactive murals nestled in a narrow alleyway in San Francisco!

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

Umbrella Alley is a seriously charming spot — yes it’s touristy, but I love it’s fresh, playful, and colorful vibe. And it’s always a work in progress — with new murals being painted on the regular and fun installations hung above (like rainbow balloons and umbrellas). It’s an explosion of color — every square inch is plastered with paint, even on the ground!

I’m sure you’ve seen photos of the ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ mural — it’s all over social media (particularly IG) and is especially colorful! That’s the main attraction in Umbrella Alley in SF!

Everytime I visit, I see people give the alley a quick glance and then move right on. Don’t be one of those people! Actually come in and take some pics! It’s easily one of the most colorful areas in the city and one of the best spots for instagram photos in San Francisco !

Umbrella Alley used to be one of the best hidden spots in the city , but it’s now pretty well known thanks to social media (and rightfully so — the artists deserve to get their work recognized)! It’s a must on any 3-day San Francisco itinerary , especially since it’s so close to where so many tourists visit (Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman’s Wharf).

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

The alleyway is full of photo spots in San Francisco — there’s the Fisherman’s Wharf crabby Fnnch honey bear, a psychedelic butterfly, a gorgeous decoupage of pink and red and white hearts, umbrellas and balloons hanging from the ceiling, a gorgeous Kate Tova heart, and a whole bunch more. All the murals are selected to reflect San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf, California, and travel in general (but mostly California). And I can’t get enough of it.

Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about Umbrella Alley in San Francisco!

Background of Umbrella Alley

It all started during the pandemic. Well, a few weeks before that actually. Brian (the creator of Umbrella Alley and owner of Electric Tour Company) started painting the pavement of his space at the Electric Tour Company when tourism businesses started to feel the effects of the pandemic. There were already a few plans in the making for murals, but they never stopped, and he employed local artists to continue beautifying the entire alleyway and the interior of his garage.

umbrella alley san francisco tours

I’ve been able to kinda watch Umbrella Alley come to life. The first time I visited I couldn’t even get in because we didn’t realize the hours were so wonky, but the rainbow zigzag floor wasn’t even painted yet! The next time I came, a bunch of the murals were completed but the balloon and umbrella ceiling wasn’t installed yet. And last time I visited, the umbrellas were starting to get painted on the wall near Kate Tova’s heart. Like I said before, it’s always a work in progress, and you can expect to see new things from time to time!

Where to Find Umbrella Alley and How to Get There

Umbrella Alley is located in Fisherman’s Wharf, the super touristy area of San Francisco. Locals tend to stay away from here, but I can attest visiting every so often is actually kinda fun! Especially to see the ever-changing murals evolve at Umbrella Alley (and of course indulge in some cotton candy at Pier 39).

But you’ll definitely need to pop the address (or simply ‘Umbrella Alley’) into your GPS, as it’s not the easiest to find if you don’t know where you’re looking. Exact address: 757 Beach St, San Francisco

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

It’s in the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf, not far from Ghirardelli Square, the Aquatic Park, and Buena Vista Cafe (try a famous Irish Coffee afterwards — perfect on a chilly SF day!). If you see Wells Fargo Bank ATM, you know you’re in the right spot, but trust me, once you’re there, it’s REALLY hard to miss (so much color)!

  • Public transport near Umbrella Alley: Thankfully, FIsherman’s Wharf is easily accessible from all points in SF via public transportation. The Powell/Hyde Cable Car ends right across the street, although the wait to board from downtown SF can be super long. Check the SFMTA — MUNI who operates the Cable Cars, F Line, and Bus System. You can also visit www.511.org for any transit questions you’ve got!
  • Driving to Umbrella Alley and where to park : We tend to drive into the city since we live near Palo Alto (a bit south), and timing really depends on traffic that day. Hate to break it to ya, but parking’s definitely kinda difficult over here and there’s a 2 hour max limit. BUT if you do happen to be visiting on a Sunday, street parking is free (only on Sundays)! If parking in a paid garage is more your style, there’s the Anchorage Shopping Center Garage (two blocks away) and the Ghirardelli Square Garage (1 ½ blocks away).

Opening Hours of Umbrella Alley

The first time I attempted to visit Umbrella Alley, it was closed. Womp, womp… whoops! Just for the record, the alleyway is located behind a locked gate, and not open if volunteer staff are not on site. We didn’t know that and expected to be able to waltz right in! Don’t be us — double check ahead of time!

umbrella alley san francisco tours

Opening days and hours seem to change every so often, so double check it’s open before heading there if you’re not already in the area! The latest opening hours are as follows:

  • Spring and Summer: 10am to 6pm daily
  • Winter: 11am to sunset most weekends

Although it does seem like the days open are often increasing (especially in the winter), so definitely check. And the hours tend to change depending on the season and sometimes even weather.

Psst — always check the official UmbrellaAlleySF instagram account — they’re really good about posting their current hours. Hours do seem to change pretty frequently, so watching their Instagram stories are definitely essential!

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

  • Crowds : Looking to get the alley all to yourself? Yes, it does happen! Visit during the week when less out-of-towners are going on tours, although I’ve never actually seen Umbrella Alley especially busy. And if there are some large crowds, most people only stay for max 15 minutes or so, so just wait them out!
  • Beware of Shadows : Ironically, I like to visit Umbrella Alley on overcast/foggy days, as this is when shadows will be at a minimum for photos! If there’s too much sun, you’ll unfortunately get tons of nasty balloon shadows and lots of glare.
  • Tripods : There are provided photo stands around Umbrella Alley (which you can move around), but I prefer to take my own mini tripod since I can never seem to get my phone to stand up by itself on the ones provided. Maybe I’m just not very coordinated though, as I’ve seen others do it just fine, haha.

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

  • Try different angles! Stand up! Sit down. Spread your wings! Take your dog! Get up close! Make it fun of course — the whole premise of Umbrella Alley is to take pictures, so don’t be shy! Everyone here is doing the same thing!
  • What to wear: Colors that won’t blend in — I wore light jeans and a white tank and like how I stood out against the different murals. But really though, anything kinda goes.

The ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ Mural

I have a slight suspicion (ok, a major feeling) that you’re coming to Umbrella Alley to take pictures with the ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ mural! I’m right, right?! :p This is definitely the star of the show here at Umbrella Alley in San Francisco, and easily one of the best photo spots in SF (great for that IG feed!).

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

If you haven’t heard, SF recently got it’s own ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ vintage postcard mural, like so many other big cities do. Finally! It’s a beauty and well worth the wait — completed and painted by the talented Maxfield Bala (a local California resident) in 2019. And once you walk into Umbrella Alley, you can’t miss it! The mural measures a whopping 13’ tall by 18’ wide, basically taking over the entire wall! The mural has all those iconic SF spots you’d expect it to — like the Golden Gate Bridge (obviously), Palace of Fine Arts, Lombard Street, Alcatraz, the Painted Ladies, and even some golden California poppies.

Psst — not many people know this, but Maxfield Bala has painted other murals in San Francisco. My favorite, besides this one of course, is the iconic Jefferson Airplane large-scale mural of the “Volunteers” album in the Haight.

The Other Murals of Umbrella Alley

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

We’ve already established that the ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ mural is what draws the most visitors in, but there’s a whole bunch of others that are just as fun to photograph! I especially love Kate Tova’s heart and the Summer of Love Monarch!

And one of my favorite parts of Umbrella Alley? The fact that all of the murals are done by local artists — and they’re even looking for new muralists to help complete a new project! Here’s some other murals you’ll find in Umbrella Alley (although it seems like the space is constantly evolving, so expect to find others popping up from time to time)!

  • Heart Mural by Kate Tova: Her colorful, textured hearts (and other powerful works of art) have been popping up all over San Francisco as of late, and I can’t get enough of them ! So when I saw she painted one of her famous bleeding hearts at Umbrella Alley I was over the moon — it really helps brighten the space and the purple background is just perfect for it! You’ll also find one of her pieces on the ‘I Left My Heart in SF’ mural.

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

  • Fisherman’s Wharf Honey Bear: I’m sure you’ve seen @ fnnch ’s work all around San Francisco. It’s everywhere! So how could Umbrella Alley be complete without a honey bear of its own! Just look at those little crabs — so stinkin’ cute!
  • Towering GATS Mural: Ohhhh, Umbrella Alley is super proud to have a piece by GATS, a street artist based in Oakland and an international graffiti legend. What’s GATS you ask? An acronym for “Graffiti Against The System“ — that’s what! The mural towers over the whole alleyway, and his iconic mask with its flowing beard can be found all over the world.
  • Summer of Love Monarch Wall: This huge piece by Maxfield Bala (the same artist who designed and painted the ‘Greetings from San Francisco’ piece) and Jeremy Novy just screams ‘photograph me’ — I mean look at just how colorful (and tall) it is. So spread your arms open wide and have fun with it! It’s got a psychedelic, Austin Powers-esque vibe, with wild patterns and neon colors. Probably because the mural is a nod to San Francisco’s history — being the Summer of Love in the late 1960’s and all!

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

  • I Left My Heart in San Francisco: There’s just something about this piece that I just LOVE so much. I mean, just look at it — this heart balloon decoupage by artist Brian Huber is oh so fun! It used to be shown outside, but it’s recently been rearranged and now lives in the open garage under the umbrellas.
  • See The World Mural: It’s got two huge eyes (with the Golden Gate Bridge depicted in both) and dozens of faraway places. My take on it? Out of all the places you can go, you’ll always end up back in San Francisco! This one’s not my favorite (I tend to gravitate towards the more colorful pieces), but it’s still a pretty impressive piece by 3Nolam Oakland Based Muralist & Brian Huber.
  • California Blooming Wildflower: I love poppies, so I was thrilled when I saw this piece by Amelie de Cirfontaine, a French-American street artist, currently based in San Francisco! It features three beautiful California wildflowers, specifically the California Poppy, the official state flower! Isn’t it just gorgeous?!

  • San Francisco Homies: Such an interesting piece. I had never heard of Yonmeister (or Yon) before, and now I’m hooked! So fascinating and such a distinctive style. He created a piece with his signature “homies” (his distinctive big eyed characters) made up of San Francisco characters. I mean just look at them — basically all of San Francisco is represented! And Yon’s been at this for a while; he used to create characters in his notebooks as a teenager and now there’s hundreds scattered throughout the city.
  • Floating Umbrellas: Most recently, there’s been a flock of Luinova signature style umbrellas tumbling across the purple wall above and around the sparkling heart. They make the space feel so whimsical and fairy-like!

Other Things to Know:

Umbrella Alley in San Francisco

  • Price : Umbrella Alley is 100% completely free, and it always was! The alley is a free attraction, supported by generous contributions to keep local artists working. If you can, donate a bit to support the mural artists! Recommended donation is $5 per person, but give what you can! Venmo: alley-artists
  • Tours departing from Umbrella Alley : Since the alley is primarily used for tours (and housing the tour vehicles), you can head out on sightseeing tours from here! There’s guided segway tours (if you’ve never ridden one, you’re in for a treat — they’re so fun!), private open-top Jeep tours, electric scooter tours to the Golden Gate Bridge, and luxury three-wheel tuk-tuk private tours.
  • Bathrooms: There’s no public bathrooms right here at Umbrella Alley, but you’ll find clean ones close by at Ghirardelli Square.

Things to do near Umbrella Alley

If you’re already in the area, stay a little while and experience true touristy San Francisco! Like I mentioned earlier, you won’t find many locals hanging around here, but I find it fun every once in a while!

Some of my favorite things to do in Fisherman’s Wharf:

  • Play tourist at Pier 39 ; watch the sea lions flopping around and sunning themselves on the docks, go on the merry-go-round, have a bucket of mini donuts (Trish’s Mini Donuts is one of my favorite desserts in SF when I’m in that area), slurp up some famous clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl from Boudin, and take some fun photos with the California mural (another one of the best photo spots in San Francisco )

  • Indulge in an over-the-top ice cream sundae from Ghirardelli , and be sure to grab a free piece of chocolate!
  • Play some vintage arcade games at Musee Mecanique
  • Sip a signature Irish coffee at Buena Vista — it’s kinda an institution over here and right down the street from Umbrella Alley

  • Walk up the hill to Lombard Street (it’s a great leg workout on those hills!) then walk down the staircase next to the windy road (be sure to check out the blue house with all the bouganvilla — it’s my fave!)

Electric Scooter Rentals with GPS Storytelling Tour to the Golden Gate Bridge

Our fun 1 and 2 Seat Electric Scooter Rentals have GoRide GPS on board for a fully narrated tour to the Golden Gate Bridge and back in style.

Our Guests Rate Us 5 Stars

This tour was great! Very informative, easy to drive, done at our own pace, and can skip what we don’t want to see or stay longer. We would definitely do these again.

Review of the Golden Gate Bridge Loop GoRide Tour

The GPS is easy to use (all automatic) and to be honest you won’t want to go off the suggested route.

See a lot in a short time. Really a super experience, I’ll highly recommend it

What do I need to rent a GoRide Scooter?

  • to be at least 18 years old.
  • hold a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • have a credit card for the security deposit ($150 per scooter)
  • Review, understand, and sign the rental agreement and waiver.
  • Arrive ready to have some fun!

Who Can Ride an Electric Scooter? Rider Requirements

Ages 18 + No drivers under age 18. Please note that all renters must be 18 years or older to drive any of the eScooters and must possess a valid credit card and valid government-issued picture ID. A driver’s license is not required. Note: an international license is not necessary, an international passport is accepted for ID.

Seats Per Scooter /Ages: Our Fat Tire eScooters (1 seater) do not accommodate passengers, while the sole passenger on the eTrike (2 seaters) must be at least 5+ years old.  Only One child or One Adult on the back seat of the E-Trikes.

Weights: Please note that there is a maximum weight limit of 300lbs (136kg) for a single passenger on the Fat Tire eScooter and 3 00lbs (181kg) total for the 2 passengers on the eTrike . Like all E-scooters, the performance and uphill speed may be limited depending on guest weight.

Helmets are required and will be provided.

How Long, Fast and Far Can I Ride?

The top speed of the San Francisco E-Scooter rental is around 20 mph (32 kph) and the average range between battery charges is 25 miles (40 km) . The battery life is around 1.5 to 2 hours with constant riding, but this can vary depending on factors such as hills, rider weight, and speed.

If you ride at full speed without any stops, the range will be substantially less. Constant aggressive acceleration and braking will drastically reduce your range.  Gentle acceleration and coasting will ensure you make the entire tour distance.

GPS-guided tours are set at a relaxed pace and the scooter has a limit on top speed, typically cruising between 5-20 mph (8-32 kph) for a safe and comfortable ride on crowded streets and bike trails.

Like all E-scooters, the performance and uphill speed may be limited depending on guest weight.

Can I ride on the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalks?

NO. Due to very crowded pedestrian sidewalks, electric-powered scooters (and many other modes of transportation) are not allowed to ride onto the bridge sidewalks.

You will have an amazing stop up close at the Southern end of the bridge on this GPS-guided tour route.

NOTE : We do encourage guests to walk out onto the bridge sidewalks after parking their eScooter nearby.

The good news is: We do get amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge , Historic Fort Point (built directly under the South approach), Bridge Overlook areas, and San Francisco Bay from our GPS-guided scooter route and frequent stops.

Safety is a top priority on the bridge, and for that reason, electric scooters are not allowed to be ridden on the sidewalks to ensure the safety of the millions of visitors that come each year.

Where can I ride? Do I have to stay on Tour Route?

You are free to ride wherever you wish (exceptions below) as long as you obey all bicycle rules. If a sign is posted stating no bicycles are allowed then this also applies to you.

IMPORTANT: Electric Scooters are not allowed on the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalks or on the gravel trails along San Francisco Bay in the Presidio. You cannot take these scooters across the Golden Gate Bridge.  These scooters are best on pavement. No off-road riding.

The best routes in San Francisco follow our amazing system of bike lanes and multi-use bike/pedestrian trails.

Do I have to stay on the tour route? You can go freestyle if you want to, no problem. But the scooter GPS only talks on the designated routes. The batteries last approximately 2 hours so your range is limited.

How long does a tour loop take?

Our most popular tour loop to the Golden Gate Bridge is 1.5 hours long, of which approximately 1.25 hours is driving time.

Note: Route times are estimates based on average time and traffic conditions. All e-scooter rentals are charged based on departure and return times.

What If I arrive back late?

  • Late returns are no problem. If you are having fun, keep going – not past our posted closing time for the day.
  • If you want to extend your rental, we charge in 1-minute increments based on our 36.00 extra hours rate.
  • Rental time is calculated from your departure from and return to the facility.
  • Rental time does not include check-in, video training, or returning paperwork and checkout.
  • The last return time is generally at Sundown/Sunset.
  • The closing time for each day is posted at the rental facility.  If you return after closing time the rate is $1.00 a minute.

How Do I Learn to Ride a Electric Scooter?

  • If you do not have bike riding experience this might not be the best activity for you.
  • We include a short equipment operation video, and equipment recap session. The session is designed to provide riders with a quick overview of the scooter controls, knowledge, and experience needed to safely operate the Scooters.
  • Due to time limits, we cannot provide riders with no previous bike riding experience with full training on riding and balancing on a scooter.
  • Each Scooter is equipped with a speed control/throttle and a brake lever on the handlebars.
  • All riders are required to wear the provided helmets.

Can children ride on the scooter with an adult?

The eTrike Scooters are 2 rider scooters . The back seat/ rear passenger age 5+.  Only One child or One Adult on the back seat of the E-Trikes.

The Fat Tire eScooters are 1 rider scooters. No pasengers.

No small children (under age 5) or infants in laps or in child carriers.

What Model and Type of Scooters Do You Use?

Our rentals with amazing GoRide GPS-guided tours to the Golden Gate Bridge and back are operated on two of the top-end electric scooter models available:

  • KAASpeed K1S Electric Scooter (Seats 1)
  • PushPak Model 4000 Electric E-Trike (Seats 2)

Depending on the weather/road conditions and the rider’s weight/riding patterns battery life and mileage will vary greatly.

Like all E-scooters, the performance and uphill speed may be limited depending on guest weight. Helmets are required and will be provided. Constant aggressive acceleration and braking will drastically reduce your range.  Gentle acceleration and coasting will ensure you make the entire tour distance.

What happens if I damage the scooter?

As the rider, you are responsible for any accidental damages to the scooter unit while it is in your possession. Before the ride, you will conduct an inspection of the unit and inform our staff of any damages found.

An additional fee of $7.50 per scooter can be paid at the time of booking or at guest check-in for damage coverage that will cover the cost of accidental damage to the unit, except for theft. There is a $150.00 deductible on this coverage.

Please note that this does not cover theft of the scooter, lost scooter keys, lost helmet(s), lost scooter GPS phone(s), lost JBL speaker(s), or lost scooter lock(s). It only covers accidental damage to the e-scooter and does not cover damages to other guests, people, or property.

Important: Riders are responsible for all damages to the Scooter and/or anything /anyone they may accidentally collide with. Example : If you accidentally dent a car along the route you will be responsible to work out paying for damages directly with the vehicle owner .

Do you require a deposit for Scooter rentals?

Yes. Each rental will be charged a per scooter $150.00 deposit fee . This will not be charged to your card but an authorization to hold will be placed on the card.
