We know that having and using a passwords manager is all but a necessity on any computer or mobile device. For one, if you're even moderately security conscious, you are probably using strong passwords . Unfortunately, typing strong passwords on a mobile device (assuming a password with upper and lower-case letter, numbers, and symbols) is kind of a pain.

You might also change things up from website to website. It goes without saying that you shouldn't use the same password twice (easier said than done), so you need to exercise your memory in order to have a unique password for every single website.

To that end, if you use an iPhone or iPad, then Safari already includes an excellent, robust passwords manager, which we'll show and explain to you today.

Access the passwords manager by first opening the "Settings" on your iOS device. Scroll to and tap open "Safari" in the left column, then tap open the "Passwords" category.

Before you can access your passwords, you will need to verify your identity using Touch ID . On older devices that don't have Touch ID, you will need to enter your passcode.

Every account on your device will be shown. Your passwords won't appear, instead you will only see the user ID associated with each account. Notice that there's an arrow on the right edge of each account row.

Tap open any account and you will now see your user name, password, and the associated website.

Tap the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner and you can edit everything or delete the account from your device.

Back on the main passwords screen, tap the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner and notice that a selection circle appears to the left of each account row.

With the edit option enabled, you can select multiple accounts at once. The advantage to this is that you can go through all of your accounts and select the ones you no longer have or want stored, then simply tap the "Delete" button in the upper-left corner.

You don't have to actually access each account to copy your user name and password to the clipboard. From the passwords screen, you can long-press and the option for both will appear on a context menu.

We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that you can tap open the "Search" field.

When you do this, the keyboard will appear and you can then tap a few characters to find the account or user name you're seeking.

Finally, we need to point out that your passwords are saved to iCloud so they're available on all your iOS devices. If you simply want to prevent Safari information from being synced to iCloud, then tap off the button next to it in the iCloud settings.

If you want to turn off iCloud Keychain syncing, then your Safari information such as bookmarks and history will still be synced but passwords will not.

The passwords manager for Safari on iOS is clearly one of the easiest to use and you can quickly transfer information from it to other browser logins.

While we can't recommend copying sensitive information like this as plain text to your device's clipboard, it can make things substantially easier. Just be advised that doing so is a security risk.

Password managers can be found all over the place now, with many browsers coming with one system or another built into them, but few are as useful as Google Password Manager.

Since it's baked into Google's systems , if you're a big Chrome user then you'll find it a hugely helpful way to store and protect your passwords and accounts without needing to keep everything memorised. Here's how it works.

What is Google Password Manager?

Google doesn't always name its products and services very obviously, but in the case of Password Manager it's thankfully very simple - it does exactly what it says on the tin.

This is a system that lets you tell Google to keep certain account credentials that you use in its secure system so that you don't have to manually type in all the details every time you log into those accounts.

Moreover, Google will flag to you if the details you're using are publicised in any breaches or hacks, and advise you to update them so that you're not exposed by security breaches.

How does Google Password Manager work?

Google Password Manager isn't a separate app that you have to download, or anything - it's baked into Google's apps, especially its web browser Chrome.

It stores your passwords and usernames securely, encrypting them and letting you log in with just a tap provided you're on an authenticated or trusted device, like your phone or laptop.

So, by logging into your Google account (which should have two-factor authentication on it) you'll then be able to access other accounts that you've saved to Password Manager much more quickly.

Password Manager will also be able to suggest a password when you create a new account, offering up a more complex and random password than you were likely to be considering, and adding it to your list of stored credentials.

How to use Google Password Manager

Because Password Manager is built-in, it's pretty easy to start using it on Chrome - when you log into an account or website (like Netflix , say) on your browser, you'll generally be asked by a quick prompt whether you'd like to save the details for future logins.

Saying yes to this is the simplest way to use Password Manager, storing those credentials. If you log into that site again, you'll be offered the chance to use your stored details, and if you instead use new details you'll be asked if you'd like to update the stored information to reflect those changes.

You can easily access a sort of hub for Password Manager on either mobile or desktop versions of Chrome by hitting the "More" icon (three dots) to access the browser's menu and then tapping on Password Manager.

This will let you see a list of all your saved logins, which you can edit or delete as you like.

You're also able to add notes to each password that you store - in case there's a second layer of security that you always need to put in, for example, and these notes are also stored securely.

Password Manager does work in browsers that aren't Chrome, but it'll be a little less reliable and potentially a little buggier, so Chrome is the way to go for it to be as smooth as possible.

How to import passwords to Google Password Manager

If you're using another password manager, whether it's a different browser's built-in option or a paid premium app like LastPass, and you'd like to import your passwords to Google Password Manager, things are simple.

These apps should all have the ability to export your passwords as a .csv file, and doing that is your first step.

Next, open up Chrome and go to the Password Manager section of the menu, then click on Select File under Import passwords and select the new .csv file.

This will import your passwords and you'll be good to go. Note that you can also export your passwords from Chrome by going to the same section and tapping that option instead.

How to check password strength on Google Password Manager

Password Manager has a handy feature called Password Checkup that lets you work out whether your existing passwords are strong enough to keep using them.

You'll find this under the main list on the left when you're in the Chrome menu's Password Manager section, and it'll flag with colour-coding which of your passwords are fine, which are weak, and which have been exposed in breaches already.

These last ones will want to change quickly to ensure your security is as solid as it should be.

Password managers are the vegetables of the internet. We know they’re good for us, but most of us are happier snacking on the password equivalent of junk food . For nearly a decade, that’s been “123456” and “password”—the two most commonly used passwords on the web. The problem is, most of us don’t know what makes a good password and aren’t able to remember hundreds of them anyway.

The safest (if craziest) way to store your passwords is to memorize them all. (Make sure they are long, strong, and secure !) Just kidding. That might work for Memory Grand Master Ed Cooke , but most of us are not capable of such fantastic feats. We need to offload that work to password managers, which offer secure vaults that can stand in for our memory.

I'm not just talking to you either. When you're playing tech support for half a dozen family members this holiday season, why not get them set up with a password manager while you're at it? The whole internet will thank you. Silently.

A password manager offers convenience and, more importantly, helps you create better passwords, which makes your online existence less vulnerable to password-based attacks. Most web browsers offer at least a rudimentary password manager. (This is where your passwords are stored when Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox ask if you’d like to save a password.) This is better than reusing the same password everywhere, but browser-based password managers are limited . In recent years, Google has improved the password manager built into Chrome, and it's better than the rest, but it's still not as full-featured or widely supported as a dedicated password manager like those below.

WIRED readers have also asked about Apple’s macOS password manager, which syncs through iCloud and has some nice integrations with Apple’s Safari web browser. There’s nothing wrong with Apple’s system. In fact, I have used Keychain Access on Macs in the past, and it works great. It doesn’t have some of the nice extras you get with dedicated services, but it handles securing your passwords and syncing them between Apple devices. The main problem is that if you have any non-Apple devices, you won’t be able to sync your passwords to them. All in on Apple? Then this is a viable, free, built-in option worth considering.

Bitwarden is secure, open source, and free with no limits. The applications are polished and user-friendly, making the service the best choice for most users. Did I mention it’s open source? That means the code that powers Bitwarden is freely available for anyone to inspect, seek out flaws, and fix. In theory, the more eyes on the code, the more airtight it becomes. Bitwarden was also audited for 2022 by a third party to ensure it’s secure. You can install it on your own server for easy self-hosting if you prefer to run your own cloud.

There are apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as extensions for all major web browsers. Bitwarden also has support for Windows Hello and Touch ID on its desktop apps for Windows and macOS, giving you the added security of those biometric authentication systems. The web interface (which I frequently use) recently got a redesign , which makes it quite a bit cleaner and easier to use.

Bitwarden supports passwordless authentication, meaning you can log in with a one-time code, biometric authentication, or a security key. Bitwarden also has excellent support for passkeys, including the ability to log into Bitwarden with a passkey , which means you don't need to use your username or password even to open your vault. There’s also some extras, like a feature to securely share files (called Bitwarden Send ), an authenticator app (paid only), and an extremely active and helpful community.

I like Bitwarden’s semiautomated password fill-in tool. If you visit a site you’ve saved credentials for, Bitwarden’s browser icon shows the number of saved credentials from that site. Click the icon, and it will ask which account you want to use and then automatically fill in the login form. This makes it easy to switch between usernames and avoid the pitfalls of autofill that we mention at the bottom of this guide. If you simply must have your fully automated form-filling feature, Bitwarden supports that as well.

Bitwarden offers a paid upgrade account. The cheapest of the bunch, Bitwarden Premium, is $10 per year. That gets you 1 GB of encrypted file storage and two-factor authentication with devices like YubiKey , FIDO U2F, and Duo, plus a password hygiene and vault health report. You also get priority customer support with a paid account.

After signing up, download the app for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or Linux. There are also browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge, Vivaldi, and Brave .

What sets 1Password apart from the rest of the options in this list is the number of extras it offers. Like other password managers, 1Password has apps that work just about everywhere, including on macOS, iOS, Android, Windows, Linux , and ChromeOS. There’s even a command-line tool that will work anywhere. There are plug-ins for your favorite web browser too, which makes it easy to generate and edit new passwords on the fly.

1Password was previously our top pick, but the revamped 1Password app went through a stage where it was rough around the edges. I had problems with autofill not working, among other things. I'm happy to say that recent updates have solved those issues, especially the need to reenter your master password every time Chrome updates. Also promising is a beta feature for the browser extensions: When you sign in to a site that you haven’t yet stored a credential for, 1Password will automatically create and save the credential for you after you’ve logged in. That's a much nicer workflow than the current version, which interrupts your login to ask if you want to save the password.

I still find BitWarden to be a more economical choice for most people, but there are some very nice features in 1Password that you won't find elsewhere. If you frequently travel across national borders, you’ll appreciate my favorite 1Password feature: Travel Mode . This mode lets you delete any sensitive data from your devices before you travel and then restore it with a click after you’ve crossed a border. This prevents anyone, including law enforcement at international borders, from accessing your complete password vault.

It's worth noting that 1Password uses a combination of two keys to unlock your account, your password and an additional generated secret key. While that does add a layer of security that will protect against weak passwords, it also means part of what you need to unlock your passwords is something you did not create. 1Password does make sure you have this key as an item in your “emergency kit,” but I still prefer pairing a self-generated password with a Yubikey.

In addition to being a password manager, 1Password can act as an authentication app like Google Authenticator, and for added security it creates a secret key to the encryption key it uses, meaning no one can decrypt your passwords without that key. The downside is that if you lose this key, no one, not even 1Password, can decrypt your passwords. (This can be mitigated by setting up a custom group that has the “Recover Accounts” permission.)

1Password also offers tight integration wth other mobile apps. Rather than needing to copy and paste passwords from your password manager to other apps (which puts your password on the clipboard at least for a moment), 1Password is integrated with many apps and can autofill. This is more noticeable on iOS, where inter-app communication is more restricted.

After signing up, download the app for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Chrome OS, or Linux. There are also browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, Brave, and Edge .

I first encountered Dashlane several years ago. Back then, it was the same as its competitors, with no stand-out attributes. However, updates over time have added several helpful features. One of the best is Site Breach Alerts, something other services have since added as well. Dashlane actively monitors the darker corners of the web, looking for leaked or stolen personal data, and it alerts you if your information has been compromised.

Setup and migration from another password manager is simple, and you’ll use a secret key to encrypt your passwords, much like BitWarden’s setup process. In practice, Dashlane is very similar to the others on this list. The company doesn’t offer a desktop app, but I primarily use passwords in the web browser anyway, and Dashlane has add-ons for all the major browsers, along with iOS and Android apps. If a desktop app is important to you, that omission is something to be aware of. Dashlane offers a 30-day free trial, so you can test it out before committing.

After signing up, download the app for Android and iOS, and grab the browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, and Edge .

Want to retain more control over your data in the cloud? Sync your password vault yourself. The services below do not store any of your data on their servers. This means attackers have nothing to target. Instead of storing your passwords, these services use a local vault to store your data, and then you can sync that vault using a file-syncing service like Dropbox ; NextCloud ; or Edward Snowden’s recommended service , SpiderOak . There are two services to keep track of in this scenario, making it a little more complex. But if you’re already using a file-syncing file service, this can be a good option.

Enpass does not store any data on its servers. Syncing is handled through third-party services. Enpass doesn’t do the syncing, but it does offer apps on every platform. That means once you have syncing set up, it works just like any other service. And you don’t have to worry about Enpass being hacked, because your data isn’t on its servers. Enpass supports syncing through Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud, Box, Nextcloud, or any service using WebDAV. Alas, SpiderOak is not currently supported. You can also synchronize your data over a local WLAN or Wi-Fi network.

All of the features you expect in a password manager are here, including auto-generating passwords, breach-monitoring, biometric login (for devices that support it), auto-filling passwords, and options to store other types of data, like credit cards and identification data. There’s also a password audit feature to highlight any weak or duplicate passwords in your vault. One extra I particularly like is the ability to tag passwords for easier searching. Enpass also makes setting up the syncing through the service of your choice very easy. Enpass recently added support for passkeys .

Enpass is free to use on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The mobile version syncs up to 25 items in one vault for free. For more than that, you’ll want to sign up for the paid service.

After signing up, download the app for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS, and grab the browser extensions for Chrome, Vivaldi, Edge, and Firefox .

KeePassXC works like Enpass above. It stores your passwords in an encrypted digital vault that keeps you secure with a master password, a key file, or both. You sync that database file yourself using a file-syncing service. Once your file is in the cloud, you can access it on any device that has a KeePassXC client. Like Bitwarden, KeepassXC is open source, which means its code can be and has been inspected for critical flaws. If you’re an advanced user and comfortable handling your own issues and support, KeePassXC makes a great choice.

The downside to KeePassXC is that it doesn’t have official mobile clients. There are third-party apps on both iOS and Android.

Download the desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux and create your vault. There are also extensions for Firefox , Edge , and Chrome . It does not have official apps for your phone. Instead, the project recommends KeePass2Android or Strongbox for iPhone .

Password managers are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Our top picks cover most use cases and are the best choices for most people, but your needs may be different. Fortunately, there are plenty of good password managers out there. Here are some more we’ve tested and like.

• NordPass ($36 per year) : Nordpass offers everything you need in a password manager. It uses a zero-knowledge setup in which all data is encrypted on your device before it’s uploaded to the company’s servers. Other nice features include support for two-factor authentication to sign in to your account and a built-in password generator (which has plenty of options to handle those poorly designed sites that put weird requirements on your password). There’s also a personal information storage feature to keep your address, phone number, and other personal data safe and secure but easy to access. NordPass also offers an emergency access feature, which allows you to grant another NordPass user emergency access to your vault. It works just like the same feature in 1Password, allowing trusted friends or family to access your account in the event that you cannot.
• Keeper Password Manager ($35 Per Year for Unlimited) : Keeper offers a variety of security-related tools, including a password manager. Keeper works much like 1Password and others, storing only your encrypted data, and it offers two-factor authentication for logging in to your account. Like Dashlane, Keeper has a lot of extras, including dark-web monitoring, meaning it will check publicly posted data to make sure yours isn’t available.
• Roboform ($24 Per Year, $48 Per Year for Five-User Family Plan) : Roboform has most of the same features as the rest on this list, but it lacks some of the things that differentiate our top picks, like Bitwarden’s open source aspect and 1Password’s travel features. I’ve been testing the free plan for a while and haven’t run into any problems. There are apps for every common platform, and it’s easy to use. Roboform recently completed an independent security audit and came out looking good.
• Pass (Free) : Pass is a command-line wrapper around GPG (GNU Privacy Guard), which is to say this is only for the nerdiest of users. It has support for managing encrypted .gpg files in Git, and there are third-party mobile apps available. It’s definitely not for everyone, but since people always ask, it’s what I use.

LastPass used to be our favorite free password manager , but then it changed its free plan so you are limited to a single device. If you’re looking for a free service, Bitwarden is a far better choice. More worrying, LastPass has had more bad security breaches than any other service on this page, which led us to remove it from our top picks. We do not recommend using LastPass.

A concerted effort to get rid of passwords began roughly two days after the password was invented. Passwords are a pain—you’ll get no argument here—but we don’t see them going away in the foreseeable future. The latest effort to eliminate the password comes from the FIDO Alliance , an industry group aimed at standardizing authentication methods online. Does this sound a little bit like the infamous xkcd 927 ? Yes, yes it does. But thanks to the monopolistic nature of devices, it might work this time.

Apple supports the FIDO specs and coined the term passkeys, which has caught on. Passkeys are generated cryptographic keys managed by your device (usually your phone). They’re easy to create—you don’t need to do anything, your device handles the details. Your passkeys are stored on your device and usually protected by either biometrics or PINs. Since passkeys are generated key pairs instead of passwords, there's nothing to remember. If you are familiar with GPG keys , they're somewhat similar in that there's a public and private key; the website you want to log in to has a public key and sends it to your device. Your device compares that to the private key it has and you're signed in (or not if the keys don't match). While passkeys aren't a radical departure, they're still an improvement by virtue of being a preinstalled tool for people who aren't going to read this article and immediately sign up to use one of the services above. If millions of people suddenly stop using 12345678 as a password, that's a win for security.

Almost all of the apps we've suggested here at least support storing passkeys, which means you can store your passkeys right alongside your passwords. Our two favorites, Bitwarden and 1Password, can generate, save, store, and sync passkeys. Generating new passkeys needs to be done using a browser, which is something of a pain, but it works. Once you have a passkey stored, it will automatically sync to all your devices the same way Bitwarden and 1Password sync your passwords. When you return to that site, your password manager will log you in using the passkey you generated.

Think of passkeys as credit cards next to the cash (passwords) in your wallet. It's possible that one day passkeys will work everywhere and there will be no passwords, no password managers. In the mean time we think it's better to stick with a password manager, even if all you're doing with that manager is storing passkeys.

The best and most secure cryptographic algorithms are all available via open source programming libraries. On the one hand, this is great, as any app can incorporate these ciphers and keep your data safe. Unfortunately, any encryption is only as strong as its weakest link, and cryptography alone won’t keep your passwords safe.

This is what I test for: What are the weakest links? Is your master password sent to the server? Every password manager says it isn’t, but if you watch network traffic while you enter a password, sometimes you find, well, it is. I also dig into how mobile apps work: Do they, for example, leave your password store unlocked but require a PIN to get back in? That’s convenient, but it sacrifices too much security. No password manager is perfect, but the ones above represent the best I’ve tested. They’re as secure as they can be while remaining easy to use.

A good password manager stores, generates, and updates passwords for you with the press of a button. If you’re willing to spend a few dollars a month, a password manager can sync your passwords across all of your devices. Here’s how they work.

Only one password to remember : To access all of your passwords, you only have to remember one password. When you type that into the password manager, it unlocks the vault containing all of your actual passwords. Only needing to remember one password is great, but it means there’s a lot riding on that password. Make sure it’s a good one. If you’re having trouble coming up with that one password to rule them all, check out our guide to better password security . You might also consider using the Diceware method for generating a strong master password.

Apps and extensions : Most password managers are full systems, rather than a single piece of software. They consist of apps or browser extensions for each of your devices (Windows, Mac, Android phones, iPhone, and tablets), which have tools to help you create secure passwords, safely store them, and evaluate the security of your existing passwords. All that information is then sent to a central server where your passwords are encrypted, stored, and shared between devices.

Fixing compromised passwords : While password managers can help you create more secure passwords and keep them safe from prying eyes, they can’t protect your password if the website itself is breached . That doesn’t mean they don’t help in this scenario though. All the cloud-based password managers we discuss offer tools to alert you to potentially compromised passwords. Password managers also make it easier to quickly change a compromised password and search through your passwords to ensure you didn’t reuse any compromised codes.

You should disable auto form-filling : Some password managers will automatically fill in and even submit web forms for you. This is super convenient, but for additional security, we suggest you disable this feature. Automatically filling forms in the browser has made password managers vulnerable to attacks in the past. For this reason, some, like 1Password , require you to opt into this feature. We suggest you do not.

Don’t panic about hacks : Software has bugs, even your password manager. The question is not what to do if it becomes known that your password manager has a flaw, but what you do when it becomes known that your password manager has a flaw. The answer is, first, don’t panic. Normally bugs are found , reported, and fixed before they’re exploited in the wild. Even if someone does manage to gain access to your password manager’s servers, you should still be fine. All of the services we list store only encrypted data, and none of them store your encryption key, meaning all an attacker gets from compromising their servers is encrypted data.

Wachtwoorden importeren in je Google-account

Je kunt wachtwoorden importeren in je Google-account en vervolgens checken of je wachtwoorden onveilig zijn. Wachtwoorden in je Google-account worden gesynchroniseerd op alle apparaten waarop je inlogt.

Stap 1: Download je wachtwoorden als csv-bestand

Je kunt alleen wachtwoorden in csv-bestandsindeling importeren in je Google-account.

Ga naar het Helpcentrum van de app voor wachtwoordbeheer die je gebruikt om te bekijken hoe je je wachtwoorden kunt downloaden.

Tip : Open het csv-bestand om te checken of je wachtwoorden goed zijn opgemaakt. Ga na of op de eerste regel van het csv-bestand deze kolomnamen staan:

Als dit niet het geval is, update je het csv-bestand.

Stap 2: Importeer wachtwoorden

• Ga naar passwords.google.com.

• Kies het bestand.
• Selecteer Importeren .

Stap 3: Verwijder het csv-wachtwoordbestand

Nadat je wachtwoorden in je Google-account hebt geïmporteerd, verwijder je het csv-wachtwoordbestand dat je hebt gedownload.

Als je het wachtwoordbestand niet verwijdert, kan iedereen met toegang tot het apparaat het bestand openen en toegang krijgen tot je wachtwoorden.

• Selecteer Ga naar Wachtwoordcheck .

Kan wachtwoorden niet importeren

Een csv-bestand gebruiken.

Je kunt alleen csv-bestanden gebruiken om wachtwoorden te importeren in je Google-account. Zorg dat je het csv-bestandstype selecteert als je je wachtwoordbestand downloadt.

Je csv-bestand updaten

• Open het csv-bestand.
• Ga na of op de eerste regel van het csv-bestand deze kolomnamen staan: url,username,password
• De eerste regel van het csv-bestand is: username,password,website
• Wijzig de eerste regel in: username,password,url

Limieten voor wachtwoordimport- en -opslag checken

• Je kunt 3000 wachtwoorden tegelijk importeren. Als je meer dan 3000 wachtwoorden wilt importeren, splits je ze op in meerdere csv-bestanden en importeer je de bestanden afzonderlijk.
• Je kunt maximaal 10.000 wachtwoorden opslaan in je Google-account.

Wachtwoordmanagers om al je accounts veilig te houden

Een goede wachtwoordmanager kan echt een grote verandering betekenen. De meeste mensen hebben allerlei soorten online accounts, en het is heel makkelijk om te vervallen in de gewoonte om overal hetzelfde wachtwoord te gebruiken. Het lijkt handig, maar zorgt ook voor veel risico's. Slechts een van je accounts hoeft gehackt te worden om alle andere kwetsbaar te maken.

Met een wachtwoordmanager hoef je geen duizenden logins meer te onthouden voor al je online accounts. Het houdt je wachtwoorden ook veilig door automatisch combinaties te genereren die onmogelijk achterhaald kunnen worden. Bovendien worden ze allemaal veilig opgeslagen in een gecodeerde kluis.

Een wachtwoordmanager kiezen is een belangrijke beslissing, dus we hebben de allerbeste opties getest en degenen uitgekozen die wij vertrouwen om onze eigen inloggegevens veilig te houden. Veel van deze wachtwoordmanagers bieden gratis en betaalde accounts aan, dus er is voor ieder wat wils.

1. Dashlane

De gratis versie van Dashlane is een uitstekende wachtwoordmanager voor een enkel apparaat, hij is in staat om logins op te slaan tot 50 accounts in een veilige kluis met multi-factor authenticatie, zoals LastPass. Tot dusver is alles goed, maar Dashlane's premium service is nog indrukwekkender. Niet alleen laat het je al je wachtwoorden synchroniseren tussen al je apparaten (zowel desktop en mobiel), maar het monitort ook de dark web naar datalekken en stuurt je gepersonaliseerde meldingen als een van je opgeslagen logins wordt gevonden in de gestolen gegevens.

Zoals te verwachten hangt hier wel een prijskaartje aan en Dashlane's premium plan is een van de meest prijzige opties die er is, maar de extra diensten (plus toegang tot een VPN en prioriteit bij support) zijn de kosten wel waard.

2. LastPass

LastPass is makkelijk in gebruik, heel veilig, zit boordevol functies en biedt zowel gratis als betaalde opties aan, dus je kunt kiezen wat het beste bij je past.

Alle gegevens worden opgeslagen met het gebruik van AES-256 bit-encryptie met PBKDF2 SHA-256 en salted hashing om ze veilig te houden. En het is ook niet beperkt tot wachtwoorden. Je kunt eveneens creditcard-info en adressen bewaren, zodat ze automatisch toegankelijk zijn als je online aan het shoppen bent. Daar komen ook nog gecodeerde notities bij, details van verzekeringsvoorwaarden en nog veel meer.

De gratis versie van LastPass is uitstekend, maar premium accounts zijn erg redelijk geprijsd en bieden een extreem handige extra functie: de mogelijkheid om in te loggen op apps op je smartphone. Erg weinig wachtwoordmanagers kunnen dit, en het kan onmisbaar zijn als je ooit je smartphone verliest en je wilt voorkomen dat mensen toegang krijgen tot je mails en social media. 

Een van de favoriete LastPass functies is zijn ondersteuning voor multi-factor authenticatie, dit helpt je te beschermen tijdens een phishing poging door een extra authenticatie toe te voegen als je inlogt op je accounts. Denk aan een code die is gegenereerd door een mobiele app of een vingerafdrukscan. Hoewel je het steeds vaker ziet, bieden niet alle websites en diensten dit aan, dus als al je logins veilig zijn in een kluis die beschermd wordt op deze manier is dat een zegen.

3. Keeper Password Manager

Er is geen gratis versie van Keeper Password Manager, maar je kunt het 30 dagen uitproberen voordat je besluit om je te abonneren.

Net als je zou verwachten van een premium product, is Keeper een van de meest geavanceerde wachtwoordmanagers die er is. Niet alleen biedt het plugins voor elke grote browser, plus mobiele apps voor iOS en Android, het is ook beschikbaar als een desktop app voor Windows, macOS en Linux. Er is bovendien ondersteuning voor biometrische authenticatie op smartphones en het synchroniseert je gegevens op een onbeperkt aantal apparaten.

Net als de betaalde versie van Dashlane, waarschuwt Keeper je als een van je wachtwoorden opduikt in een datalek. Het waarschuwt je ook als een van je wachtwoorden zwak is, of al eerder is gebruikt en het helpt je om een sterk nieuw wachtwoord te verzinnen.

Ook is er een uitstekende gezinsaanbieding. Die beschermt niet alleen de logindetails van iedereen bij je thuis, het laat je ook bestanden veilig delen met elkaar en het biedt een gecodeerde berichtentool dat een solide alternatief biedt voor WhatsApp als je graag Facebook-diensten wilt vermijden.

4. RoboForm

Roboform is een andere veelzijdige wachtwoord manager, met plugins voor alle grote browsers en mobiele apps voor zowel iOS als Android.

De gratis versie is uitstekend, het biedt je een veilige kluis voor al je logins (hoewel je ook de optie hebt om alleen je gegevens op te slaan op je toestel als je dat prefereert), een audit tool om zwakke wachtwoorden of gekopieerde wachtwoorden te herkennen en een wachtwoordgenerator om wachtwoorden te vervangen. Die bedenkt sterke combinaties van nummers, letters en tekens zonder herkenbaar patroon.

In tegenstelling tot LastPass, synchroniseert de gratis versie van RoboForm je wachtwoorden niet voor meerdere apparaten. Daarvoor heb je een betaalde versie nodig, maar de prijzen zijn heel redelijk. Je krijgt ook een heleboel handige functies erbij, zoals de mogelijkheid om logins veilig te delen, multi-factor authenticatie en 24/7 ondersteuning met prioriteit.

5. KeePass Password Safe

Het is niet de meest esthetische wachtwoordmanager ter wereld, maar KeePass Password Safe biedt solide beveiliging, ondersteuning voor meerdere gebruikers en gedownloade plugins om zijn functies uit te breiden.

KeePass' veilige wachtwoordgenerator kan logins produceren die geschikt zijn voor die vervelende websites met hele specifieke voorschriften, en geeft duidelijk alle opties aan die het gegenereerde wachtwoord zwakker kunnen maken.

De wachtwoordmanager beschikt over compacte installatie , waardoor het kan draaien vanaf een usb-stick zonder dat je het hoeft te installeren op een pc. Hij kan de invoer van en de uitvoer naar een breed scala aan bestandsformaten aan en er zijn volop aanpassingsopties om uit te proberen.

Het feit dat KeePass Password Safe open-source is, betekent dat iedereen de code kan nakijken op mogelijke zwaktes. Dat houdt in dat elk beveiligingsprobleem geïdentificeerd kan worden en meteen opgelost kan worden. En er is een grote reeks aan browser plugins en apps van derden voor de integratie van database met je browser en mobiele apparaten.

Het ontbreekt wel aan het gemak van een commerciële wachtwoord manager, maar als je de voorkeur geeft aan het lokaal opslaan van je wachtwoord dan is KeePass een goede optie.

Another popular and well-loved password manager, Dashlane is keen to pitch its strong security credentials as a leading feature. While all the managers here have a good reputation in this regard, Dashlane also prides itself on its easy to use interface, so it isn't a chore to navigate.  

Best password manager for mobile

RoboForm works great on mobile (both Android and iPhone), and the free version includes cloud syncing, which is a nice bone to be thrown. Multi-device syncing is for paid users only, though, but prices are good.

Best free password manager

Bitwarden’s free tier alone should cater to most users’ needs. Unless you’re a serious power user who requires some very advanced features, it is more than capable of storing all your passwords securely across all your devices - all without paying a penny.

Best password manager for mid-sized business

A great choice for medium-sized businesses, Keeper has some features that admins would love, including a policy engine and organizational structures. Prices can escalate quickly with add-ons though.

The vendors of one of the best VPN services around, NordVPN , have now made a password manager, and it’s of a similarly impeccable standard.

This versatile client is on every platform we could hope for, and we found the performance was excellent, offering a smooth and discrete experience, all the way from the initial setup to everyday use. 

The free plan of NordPass offers unlimited storage space for passwords, which isn’t the case for every password manager we tested. But while we could sync our passwords with other devices on this tier, we couldn't stay logged in on more than one device at a time. The premium version, however, allows us to log into six. 

There is 24/7 email support and an online help center too, which helps to sweeten the deal further. All things considered, we believe NordPass to be a very capable password manager that offers plenty of value for money. There are even NordPass promo codes to bring the cost down more.

2. Dashlane

Password managers manage all the complexity (of storing many passwords) behind one master password JD Sharman, former CEO of Dashlane

✅ You want to prioritize security: With features like real-time phishing alerts, Dashlane is great for those who want to keep constant vigilance on their security posture. ✅ You want to go with the crowd: Dashlane is one of the most popular password managers for business, and its reputation should be of reassurance. 

❌ You're on a budget: With all its premium features, Dashlane doesn't exactly come cheap, and its miserly free version only lets you use a single device.

🔒  Dashlane is very close to its main rival NordPass, but it puts a bit more emphasis on security features. Its premium plans can be expensive, but it is one of the go-to choices for millions of users for a reason. ★★★★½

Dashlane has established itself as one of the most prominent password managers for businesses and individuals alike, and it wasn't hard for us to see why. 

With the ability to store an unlimited amount of passwords and protect them with multi-factor authentication, we couldn't find any reason to doubt this password manager on the basis of its convenience and security offerings.

Set up was easy, taking us no more than five minutes to get going. There were only a handful of steps, and the interface was laid out well, making it simple to navigate.

On top of this, there is also the option to store files in the manager - although the best cloud storage providers may be a better option if you require lots of safe and easily accessible storage. Dashlane premium also comes with a VPN, and although we found it perfectly serviceable, again you may want to consider using the best business VPN available if this is a top priority for your firm.

The only real downsides we found with this manager were the limited live chat hours and the cost of the lowest paid-for plan, which is one of the most expensive out there. And we think it's needed to get the most out of it, since the free tier is limited to only one device. 

But we believe the price is justified considering the top-draw features on offer. There are also plenty of Dashlane promo codes to keep costs down too.

3. RoboForm

✅ You want easy autofill: RoboForm has some great autofill capabilities, making it easy to complete login forms. ✅ You want good value: RoboForm is very reasonably priced, but still has the top-end features you would expect of a premium manager.

❌ You want free device syncing: Syncing your passwords between devices is one of the most basic functionalities all good password managers should have, but the free version of RoboForm omits this. 

🔒  RoboForm is a well-priced password manager that has great autofill functionality. Device syncing isn't available on the free version. ★★★★

RoboForm is another competent password manager in our view, with extensions for major browsers and apps for iPhone and Android devices. 

The setup was fairly straightforward, although we found the mobile apps did require us to create a few more authentication methods, such as PIN codes and biometrics, in addition to the standard master password.

We were impressed with the free version, which has a lot of features considering, such as the ability to store your vault in the cloud - which is usually reserved for paying password manager customers - or on your device only. We found that it can also check up on weak and reused passwords and has a password generator to fix them. 

What you don’t get, however, is the ability to sync your passwords across multiple devices - you’ll have to pay for that privilege, although we found the price of its premium tiers to be reasonable. These plans also offer secure password sharing, multi-factor authentication and round-the-clock support, which we are always pleased to see.

4. Bitwarden

✅ You don’t want to pay anything: There isn’t another password manager on the market that gives away so much without demanding any of your money. ✅ You want open source software: Being open source means it can’t really get away with hiding any major flaws or inconvenient truths.

❌ You value a slick interface above all else: Although its UI is perfectly usable, there are occasions where it isn't as seamless as we'd like.

🔒  Bitwarden is absolutely stellar when it comes to value, giving away a very competent password manager with features that its rivals usually closet behind a paywall. Some minor UI issues are the only real drawbacks. ★★★★½

The first open source password manager to make an appearance on our list, Bitwarden offered us plenty of features, making it ideal for individuals and businesses alike, even for those who opt for its free tier. We had multi-device synchronization, optional self-hosting and unlimited password storage - all without paying a penny.

Being open source means that others can contribute to the app's development and view the process, giving users peace of mind that there'll be no way for the company to cover up any flaws. 

2FA is also available with the free tier, via email or an authenticator app . The premium tier, however, offers more 2FA options, such as physical security keys and integration with Duo Security, a specialist third party who can provide authentication via its mobile app, SMS message or phone call. 

Premium plans impressed us with their weak password and unsecured website detection, as well as business-focused features such as password sharing, fine-grained access control and user groups.

Despite being open source, download and setup is still a breeze. The interface is clear enough (if a little basic) and there is even a command line option if you really want to get into it.

The desktop app is pretty basic, but Bitwarden is compatible with a whole host of browsers and platforms, including more obscure ones such as F-droid. In the end, it certainly gives its paid-for rivals a run for their money.

✅ You want plenty of features: Keeper has a lot of features to get your hands on, making it a great choice for medium-sized teams. 

❌ You want everything included: With Keeper, you have to purchase add-ons separately to get all those great aforementioned features - and the prices mount up. ❌ You want a free option: True to its premium stylings, there is no free version of Keeper, only a free trial for 30 days.

🔒  Keeper is a great pick for businesses and has plenty of features available. However, you do have to pay extra for those add-ons, and there isn't a free tier. ★★★★½

Unlike our previous entrants, there is no free version of Keeper, although there is a free 30-day trial should you wish to try it out with no commitment. But we found that the real selling point of this password manager is its feature set aimed at small to medium-sized businesses. 

These include security auditing and flexible controls for organizations thanks to the Admin Console, which allows you to perform all sorts of management tasks. There are also additional modules you can purchase to extend Keeper to your firm’s needs. 

However, some of these require further payment to add on and they can be quite expensive for what they are. 

There is also a family plan, that let us share files between members securely as well as message each other with encryption, providing us with a handy alternative to popular messenger apps such as WhatsApp .

In our testing, Keeper was simple to set up desktop and mobile devices. Businesses will also be pleased to know that there are various ways of getting multiple users over to the manager, such as via domain name auto-provisioning, SSO and API/SDK.

6. N-Able Passportal

✅ You're an enterprise: N-Able Passportal is made for large organizations, and offers tailored packages to suit your specific needs. ✅ You want control: Being enterprise focused, Passportal also provides plenty of admin controls to manage employee use and security protocols.

❌ You want an off-the-shelf product: There are no pre-packaged plans for Passportal or even prices listed on its website - you have to contact support for a quote based on your requirements.

🔒  N-able Passportal is a seriously capable password manager built for enterprise use. It offers plenty of control and admin tools, but it does require consultation to get going. ★★★★½

When it comes to the best business password managers, look no further than the manager formerly known as Solarwinds Passportal. With some seriously advanced features, administration control for large teams and high-level security possibilities, it’s one of the most powerful managers we've ever tested.

In addition, we also found it offered great customer support and had an easy to use interface. The rest of the company’s ecosystem was also at our disposal should we have needed it.

The main issue we have with N-Able Passportal is that you have to get a quote from their sales team if you are interested in purchasing it (there is no free option) as there is no off-the-shelf product to choose from or even a price guide to view on their website. 

But if you need to lock your business down tight, no matter its size, in a reliable and intuitive way, then Passportal should at least make it into your shortlist of password managers.

7. 1Password

✅ You're a family: 1Password is great for family use, thanks to its sharing features. ✅ You want good security: 1Password has a lot of useful security features, such as keylogging and phishing protection.

❌ You want a free password manager: 1Password is another manager that doesn't have any free options available.

🔒  1Password is another popular choice among the third-party password managers, with a good track record and useful features for families and the security conscious. ★★★★

Another very popular choice for a lot of people, 1Password has a great service for families with its shared password functionality.

There are two consumer plans offered, one for personal use and another for families with up to five members. There are also business and enterprise plans.

Setup was once again easy for us, and even gave us the option to create what it calls an Emergency Kit - which you’ll need if you ever have to recover your account if you forget your master password, for instance. 

We like the fact that protection is provided against breaches, keylogging hacks and phishing attacks, and that we could only use 1Password in verified browsers. In fact, in our discussion with veteran security expert Roger Grimes, he singled out 1Password as the exemplar for highly secure password managers. 

While there is no free option, we think 1Password is a great choice for many, especially families.

8. Proton Pass

✅ Privacy is a priority for you: Proton's track record in the online privacy market is second to none, and this focus has carried over into its new password manager as well. ✅ You don't want to pay anything: Like Bitwarden, Proton Pass has a very well-rounded free version, although Bitwarden has the edge in terms of features and pedigree.

❌ You want support on every platform: Proton Pass is currently lacking desktop apps for macOS and Linux, and Safari is missing an extension too.

🔒  Proton Pass is a very competent password manager, with some great features, including email aliasing and a 2FA authenticator. Although it is relatively new to the field, the company's ethos and reputation are reasons to be positive about this one. ★★★★

Proton is perhaps best known for its secure mail and VPN services, but it has recently entered the password manager game, bringing along its trademark emphasis on privacy.

The interface of Proton Pass was something we found very appealing, staying true to its purple palette. It's neat and tidy, and was easy for us to navigate our way around.

There are extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, as well as the privacy browser Brave, which is no surprise given the company's philosophy. But Safari misses out, as do desktop versions for macOS and Linux, although these are coming soon.

While the free plan permits an unlimited number of devices, there are still various features that only paying customers on the Proton Pass Plus plan get. These include an integrated 2FA solution and vault sharing with up to 10 people. Proton Sentinel, which is specifically designed to prevent hackers taking over your account, is also for Plus members only. 

If you want the ultimate package, though, then there is Proton Unlimited for €9.99 per month, which gives you access to the company's entire suite of products, including its email service, VPN and cloud storage solution.

A very handy feature in Proton Pass is email aliasing - similar to what NordPass has. This means that when you sign up to services, you can keep your real address hidden to protect you from spam and potential scams. The free version allows users to create up to 10 aliases, whereas those on Proton Plus get an unlimited amount.

Despite Proton's reputation in the privacy field, some users may be put off by the fact that Proton Pass isn't even a year old yet, so this is uncharted territory for the Swiss firm. However, given how well its other products perform, there's little reason to doubt its ability to produce a high-quality, secure password manager.

Although it's still relatively new, we feel that Proton Pass has earned its place in our guide, as it continues to show signs of expansion and improvement.

9. LogMeOnce

✅ You don't want a master password: LogMeOnce lets you do away with a master password and instead just use your fingerprint, PIN, a QR code, or even a selfie.

❌ You want it on alternative browsers: Browser extensions are only available for Chrome, Safari and Edge, so Firefox and other users may want to look elsewhere.

🔒  LogMeOnce is a competent password manager that offers convenience in the form of passwordless access to your vault. Its lack of support for browsers outside the mainstream is the only real negative. ★★★★½

As well as offering features such as cross-platform and unlimited device support, even with its free tier, what set this password manager apart for us was the lack of a master password requirement. Instead, we could log in using facial recognition via Apple ’s Face ID or even a selfie, as well as our fingerprint or PIN number.

What’s more, we could choose to lock away certain passwords with one of these different methods, thus applying different levels of security and convenience to each of our credentials. 

Additional security features include the ability to encrypt and store passwords online to make accessibility easier. Single Sign-On (SSO) is also available as with other password managers, which allows secure authentication for third-party applications.

We mark this manager down, though, for only having extensions for four browsers - namely Chrome, Safari, Edge and Internet Explorer (although the latter is no longer supported by Microsoft and we do not recommend you continue using it ).

If you want greater browser extension support, then Bitwarden is an ideal choice, as it is compatible with many mainstream and alternative, privacy-focused browsers.

10. KeepSolid Passwarden

✅ You're a small business: With its good password sharing features, we think KeepSolid Passwarden would make a great choice for small teams. 

❌ You're not willing to spend: KeepSolid Passwarden is relatively expensive compared to the competition, so be warned. ❌ You're larger than a small team: With a lack of admin features, centralized management and SSO, KeepSolid Passwarden wouldn't really be suitable for large businesses or enterprises.

🔒  KeepSolid Passwarden offers all the features you could want from a password manager if you're an individual or small team, but if you're anything bigger, then this probably isn't for you. ★★★★

We found KeepSolid Passwarden to be a capable password manager that can be used by everyone, from single users to families and businesses. 

Setup was the usual affair, taking us just minutes to download and create an account. We also received a recovery key in the event we get locked out for losing our master password. The import wizard was also impressive, letting us move passwords from other popular managers, such as LastPass, Dashlane, and 1Password, or a CSV file.

The manager can sync across multiple devices, has two-factor authentication and can be used in small teams to allow for password sharing from a single vault. The primary problem we had with Passwarden is its expense, which might not be worth it for personal users who won't need all the features it has to offer, such as password sharing.

We also thought the lack of administrative features, such as centralized password management and single sign-on, was disappointing, making for a password manager that works well in small team environments, but not really suitable for use within larger organizations. For those, N-able Passportal or Keeper are better options.

If you are using a password manager as part of a small business, though, we think this could be a great option.

Best for Apple users

11. mSecure

✅ You're an Apple person: mSecure offers iCloud syncing, and even has an Apple Watch app, making it a great choice for Apple fans.

❌ You want to a free option: mSecure is yet another service that has no free option available.

🔒  mSecure would be a great password manager for Apple users, given its iCloud support and Apple Watch app. It also makes regular improvements to its service, based on what we've seen so far. ★★★★

mSecure comes with unlimited password storage and several different categories to save more than just passwords. There are also custom fields, useful when certain accounts require more than a password, such as an additional secret word, security question or PIN. In addition, you can also create groups for your passwords to better organize them. 

Setting up mSecure was quick and easy for us during our testing. Support for third-party devices and software was also something we welcomed. For instance, mSecure can sync with popular cloud storage providers Dropbox and Apple 's own iCloud , and naturally has an app for Apple Watch too.

There are a few minor gripes we have with mSecure, though, including a lack of user support and no free option, but overall mSecure still remains affordable and capable enough for the majority of people.

How to choose the top password managers

Choosing the best password manager comes down to your personal needs, and whether others will be using it in addition to yourself, such as your family or the rest of your business. 

The top two on our list, NordPass and Dashlane, are arguably the best all-round password managers available, more than capable of servicing anyone from single users to large organizations. But if you don’t want to pay a penny for a password manager, then there’s only one choice in our view: Bitwarden.

Here are some key considerations when choosing a password manager:

• Security: This is of course one of the most important aspects of any password manager. We have done our best to check every manager featured in this guide adheres to best practices in terms of securing your vault and personal data. They will use industry standard encryption methods to ensure that no one knows what your passwords are. Some will also offer biometric login in addition to or instead of a master password, and many will also offer two-factor authentication (2FA) to help prevent hackers accessing your account if they somehow manage to steal your master password. Many are also starting to support passkeys as a way of logging in too, which are thought to be both easier and more secure than using a master password.
• Synchronization: Although many other vendors will offer free versions of their managers, be aware that oftentimes, some fairly basic features will be omitted, such as cross-platform synchronization and unlimited storage and devices. Bitwarden does include these, though.
• Compatibility: We’ve also indicated what platforms and browsers each manager is compatible with, which is another very important consideration when choosing a password manager. In fact, it is one of the main advantages of using a third-party password manager in the first place, since managers integrated with Apple, Google and Microsoft products will usually only work within their respective ecosystems. The managers in this list, though, will work across at least some of them, since they will be compatible with Windows and Mac (and even Linux in some cases), as well as Android and iPhone. For those who value the utmost privacy when online, you should look for a password manager that has a browser extension for specialist privacy browsers, like Brave. Again, we’ve done our best to inform you which browsers and platforms each manager works with.
• Price: When it comes to price, bear in mind that while many will show monthly costs, they will often bill you annually, so keep in mind that you will have to part with a larger sum rather than spreading the cost throughout the year. Most managers on the market today will charge anywhere from $10 to $60 a year for individual plans, with family plans being somewhat more expensive. Business plans, on the other hand, can be more costly, and some even offer tailor-made enterprise plans that will require consultation before getting a quote.

How we tested the best password managers

We tested close to 30 of the most prominent password managers around, and picked out the very best to feature in this guide. During our testing, we made sure to try them out on every platform possible, to make sure they offered a consistent experience across all manner of devices and browsers.

We spent a considerable amount of time with each password manager to ensure that there were no nasty surprises that wouldn't necessarily crop up during a brief run through. We also tried to use them in every kind of situation we could think of, again in an effort to reveal any shortcomings that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

The last thing you want to do is to change your password manager after discovering major flaws or aspects that you personally can’t live with, so we do our best to be as thorough as possible and consider all the different types of users that will deploy password managers for their specific wants and needs. 

However, it is worth noting that good password managers usually offer easy ways to export your vault from one manager to another, so if you don’t personally like a manager after spending a lot of time with it, don’t feel you’re stuck; most vendors offer easy-to-follow guides on switching to their manager from others - they want to win your custom, after all.

The best password manager FAQs

Why do we need password managers anyway.

A lot of people still seem reluctant to use third-party password managers - at least according to our own survey of 1,000 people conducted last year, which found that over a quarter didn’t see the value in them. But the advantages of using one are quite clear. 

Rather than being tied to the first-party managers offered by the likes of Apple and Google, using a standalone password manager means that you can access your credentials no matter what platform or device you are on. 

They also give you the ability to organize your passwords how you like, by letting you create folders and grant different levels of access to certain items in your vault. Some come with additional tools, like a VPN in some cases, too.

How does a password manager work?

A Password manager is a very simple and easy to use utility that requires minimal user interaction, since most of its actions are automated. They will work across numerous platforms, and they should feature a browser extension for use on desktop computers, as well as an app for smart devices such as your mobile phone. The passwords you use on each platform will synchronize across all the devices you use the password manager with. 

Once you set up your password manager, you can go ahead and create whatever digital accounts you want. They will usually throw up a prompt to create a strong password for you when doing so - this is the password generation feature of the manager. Once you accept, it will then store the password and username for you in its vault, so when you next go to log in, you should find your credentials already filled out for you. 

If you ever want to change or update your password for an existing account, you can do this too. Again, a prompt will usually appear from the password manager, confirming whether you want to overwrite the existing password with the new one you have created, ensuring your password manager remains up to date. Some password managers even have a version history, so you can see the previous passwords you have used. 

As for importing your existing passwords stored on another manager, this should be a fairly straightforward process. Many managers will give you the option to import and export your passwords as a csv file, or any one that can be opened with spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. This allows you to export them out from your old manager and import them into your new one. 

If you have your passwords stored manually in a spreadsheet, you can also import that into your new manager too, providing you follow the correct formatting for the manager in question.

What are the most secure password managers?

Understandably, this is one of the most important questions to ask of a password manager. You would expect any password manager worth its salt would be secure as a given, but no one is perfect and some have had issues. LastPass, for instance, although a very reputable and popular choice, did suffer a security breach, and although the company reassured users that no passwords were accessible, it is still a cause for concern. 

The managers offered by big tech companies, mainly Google and Apple, are generally very secure, as you might expect. Not only do they have the pockets deep enough to maintain the best protection possible, it would also be a huge PR disaster should they incur any major breaches, and companies of that size have an awful lot to lose.

How safe are password managers?

All the best password managers are very safe, using the best encryption methods to store your passwords securely. 

Zero-knowledge architecture is one of the core principles for managers to keep your passwords as safe as possible. This means that no one but the user has access to the passwords contained in the encrypted vault. Even the vendor and providers of the cloud backup service for your passwords are unable to see what your passwords actually are - only you have the power to decrypt your stored passwords, using your master password, or biometric data if you have this set up on supported password managers. 

Complex algorithms are used to encrypt passwords, and there are different methods. Some managers, such as NordPass, use something called XChaCha20, which is military grade and considered to be at the cutting edge of current encryption technology. It is also favored by big tech companies like Google, and is faster than more traditional methods such as AES-256. 

Also, NordPass claims that such methods may be crackable with new technologies - for instance, quantum computing could put traditional methods of encryption at risk - but it believes XChaCha20 is resistant to these dangers. 

All good password managers will also allow for biometric login and feature multi-factor authentication, two aspects which most people will be familiar with by now. The former involves technologies that recognize the physical aspects of the user, such as fingerprint scanners and facial recognition cameras, to authenticate them as the legitimate user.  

Multi-factor authentication is an added layer of security on top of your password to make sure that it’s actually you who has entered your password on a given site or service, usually by sending a text message code on your phone that you have to input to make sure it is you. There are also separate authenticator apps you can have on your phone that give you a code to authenticate your login instead, if you’d rather not receive an SMS code. 

And as with any piece of digital tech, how it is used by an individual or business goes a long way in determining how secure it remains. At the very least, make sure you are accessing your manager on a secure and protected network - always be cautious when using them in spaces with public wifi - and make sure you're using the best malware removal tools and the best antivirus software for your system. 

Smartphones are generally very secure in this regard, although you should always be careful when downloading apps to make sure they are trustworthy - the Google Play store, for instance, has had its fair share of malicious apps doing the rounds recently. 

Also, if you are using a master password to secure your password vault, then make sure it is a strong one. This will be one that you will have to remember yourself, so a long and complex string of various random characters will probably be out of the question.

Current expert advice suggests that for passwords you choose yourself, a string of three random words together is quite strong, as it will be hard to guess and easy to remember for yourself. Whatever you use, just make sure to avoid ones that are easy to crack, like your mother’s maiden name, your birthday, or ‘password1234’.

Can a password manager be hacked?

In a word: yes - in the sense that virtually any computer system can be hacked in theory. But the password managers in our list have a great safety record and utilize industry-standard encryption methods to protect your most valuable of assets. If we ever catch wind of any compromises to their security posture, we’ll be sure to let you know straight away. 

Of course, many of you will probably be aware by now of the breach suffered by LastPass , one of the most popular password managers around, where users’ password vaults were stolen. The company did assure them that they remained encrypted, so unless the hackers also guessed their master passwords too, they should remain safe. However, other personal data that were stolen, including names, payment information and the addresses of their IP, email and physical location, were not encrypted. For these reasons, LastPass no longer makes it onto our list of the best password managers. 

Speaking of encryption, all good managers will use the strongest methods available when storing user passwords in their databases, which are extremely difficult to crack without the digital keys needed to unlock them. So the question then becomes can a hacker obtain these keys? In the case of LastPass, its subsidiary, GoTo, recently announced the encryption keys for its users’ accounts were stolen in the same attack that affected the password manager, but it is yet to confirm whether the same is true for its service.   

LastPass isn’t the only password manager to succumb to a breach, however. Many Norton LifeLock users had their accounts hacked in late 2022 via a credential stuffing attack, with the company warning them that unwarranted access to the suite’s password manager may have occurred.

Passwordstate also saw its users fall victim to a devious fake software update that stole their stored passwords. Unsurprisingly, none of these password managers made it onto our list.

Should you use your browser to manage your passwords?

It of course makes sense from a convenience perspective to use your browser’s integrated password manager, such as that in Google Chrome. And although it is a perfectly solid choice, there are various reasons why you may want a dedicated password manager instead or in addition to your browser’s.

Firstly, your browser’s password manager will likely not work with other devices quite so easily. 

If you use Google Chrome on a desktop and have an iPhone, then passwords associated with apps will not be saved to the manager in Chrome - by default they will be saved to Apple’s own password manager, Keychain. Keychain and Chrome password managers will not sync together, and there is no browser extension for Keychain that will work on Chrome. Therefore, you will be running two managers concurrently, one used for mobile app passwords, and the other for website passwords. If you have an account for a service that has both a website and an app, then they will be saved to both managers separately. 

As you can imagine, things can start to get messy and disorganized fast. The solution would be to have a dedicated, third-party manager like those on this list, so they can centralize and sync all your passwords for both websites and apps across all your devices. They will usually have an app for mobile and for desktop, as well as an integrated extension compatible with most common web browsers, so no matter what platform you’re on, you’ll always have access to your passwords. 

Secondly, dedicated password managers often come with a lot more useful extras. For instance, a small but useful feature of many password managers is the ability to give a nickname to your account passwords, so you can locate them easily. Sometimes, you will find that searching for your account credentials by username or by the URL that the account is stored on may not yield the results you're looking for. 

Where to find the password manager on Chrome

Google Chrome is the most popular web browser in the world right now , so there’s a good chance you're using its integrated password manager already. 

On desktop platforms, you’ll find it under settings - autofill - password manager. You can see all your passwords here, and search for them via their username or the web page they are used on. It will also show you any passwords that have been compromised, based on known data breaches and leaks. 

There is also the Google Password manager, which is the official password manager for Android, and has now taken over the integrated manager in Chrome as well . This means it now stores passwords you use on Android apps as well, not just website passwords.  

Do password managers work with apps?

All the best password managers will have an app associated with them, and will work on both Android and Apple iOS devices. This means that passwords you use for other apps will be able to be stored in your password manager and easily accessible on your device, allowing for instant login. 

They will be cross-platform, so can be used across all your different devices, as well as having an extension you can download to allow them to work in popular browsers, such as Google Chrome and Apple's Safari.

However, as many smart devices now have biometric login capabilities, such as using fingerprint scanners and facial recognition, a lot of apps will simply require this to log in instead, without the need to input a password every time. This biometric data is stored on the device itself, such as your iPhone or Android phone, so a password manager isn’t used in these cases. 

However, many password managers now support biometric data too, so you can save it to the manager as well.

Ben je het hoofdwachtwoord kwijt? Gebruik dan je emergency kit . Dit is een PDF document met de details van je account en je hoofdwachtwoord. Deze maak je bij het eerste gebruik van 1Password aan. Vul deze goed in en berg het veilig op. Op die manier kan je altijd toegang krijgen tot je account. Kom je er niet uit? Dan helpt de klantenservice van 1Password je verder.

Met 1Password ben je verzekerd van veilige wachtwoorden en dus beter beschermd tegen cybercriminelen. Ook kan je 1Password gebruiken voor allerlei andere zaken, zoals je creditcard en paspoort. Al deze gegevens kunnen op een veilige manier opgeslagen worden in de app en je kunt ze gebruiken waar je ook bent.  

Bij 1Password kies je een hoofdwachtwoord, dat je telkens moet invoeren om toegang te krijgen tot de gegevens. Kies daarom een wachtwoord dat niet gemakkelijk te raden is, maar dat je goed kunt onthouden. 

Voor een 1Password Individual abonnement betaal je 2,99 per maand. Voor een 1Password Family abonnement betaal je 4,49 per maand.

Als je 1Password voor de eerste keer bestelt, krijg je de 1e maand gratis. Deze korting kan je slechts 1 keer gebruiken.

KPN denkt mee met jouw online veiligheid. Daarom bieden we allerlei producten aan om te zorgen dat je zo veilig mogelijk online bent. We werken daarbij samen met partners met veel kennis en die bewezen hebben dat ze expert zijn op het gebied van online veiligheid. De wachtwoordmanager van 1Password is er hier een voorbeeld van.

Het is mogelijk om te wisselen tussen Individual en Family. Dit kan in MijnKPN. Na het wijzigen is het wel nodig om de dienst opnieuw te activeren. Je account wordt bij een wissel namelijk bevroren. Pas na de activatie is het account weer volledig actief.  

Ga je van Family naar Individual? Zorg dan dat er nog maar 1 gebruiker actief is.

Had je al 1Password Individual, maar niet bij KPN? Dan kan het gebeuren dat je 1Password niet kan activeren nadat je het bij ons bestelt. Dit kan je doen:

1. Je kan een ander e-mailadres gebruiken en pas daarna het account bij 1Password stopzetten.

2. De bestelling bij KPN annuleren en actief laten bij 1Password.

3. Je account bij 1Password stopzetten en verwijderen. Let op: je moet dan wel je wachtwoorden exporten en dan later in het nieuwe account bij KPN weer importeren.

Bestel je 1Password bij KPN, dan krijg je een 1Password account dat in het .eu domein zit. Had je hiervoor al 1Password, dan heb je dit waarschijnlijk in het .com domein aangevraagd. Omdat dit niet goed met elkaar werkt, moet je een paar stappen uitvoeren.

1. Meld je aan op beide account. Dit doe je op een willekeurig apparaat. Hier lees je hoe dat werkt .

2. Kopieer de gegevens die je wil behouden van je .com account naar je .eu (KPN) account. Hier lees je hoe je gegeven van de ene kluis naar de andere kan kopiëren .  

3. Zodra alle gegevens in beide kluizen (zowel .eu als .com) gelijk zijn, kies je voor afmelden bij het .com account.

4. Zodra deze stappen zijn afgerond, kan je het oude 1Password .com account stopzetten.

Let op: daarna kunnen de gegevens in je oude 1Password account niet meer worden hersteld.
