CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF BMW M.

It started with the launch of the BMW 3.0 CSL in 1972, and now five decades later we are celebrating an unmatched automotive journey that's packed with icons of performance, such as the BMW M1 and more recently the BMW i4 M50. Equally as important is the recognition of the great BMW M community, which is why this jubilee is not only dedicated to our numerous successes, but also to our passionate fans, drivers and M enthusiasts. As part of this historic moment, we look to the future. A new era of emotion, electrification and smarter living is upon us. Our very own interpretation of mobility and lifestyle is evolving and will shape a new generation of BMW M vehicles and community. To mark the 50th anniversary, numerous product launches and events, along with a few surprises, are in store throughout the year. We ask fans, old and new, to join us, to show their M colours, and say proudly – WE ARE M.

LEGENDARY ROUNDEL.

The start of the anniversary year sees the return of the iconic BMW Motorsport emblem. BMW M is putting down a marker for those who love tradition. The roundel with the staggered semicircles in blue, purple and red was first used on race cars of BMW Motorsport GmbH, founded in 1972. All BMW M models and all BMW models now have the option of having the classic roundel on the front, back and wheel hubs.

COLOURS OF M.

In the anniversary year, there’s a wide range of historic paint finishes like Dakar Yellow, Daytona Violet metallic, Macao Blue metallic or Imola Red on offer for selected models. The BMW Individual Visualiser provides a first impression of the distinctive special paint finishes.

“The Power of M: Celebrating 50 Years” Opens May 16 At The Ultimate Driving Museum

The BMW CCA Foundation’s newest exhibit, “The Power of M: Celebrating 50 Years,” will roar into the Ultimate Driving Museum in May 2022. You’re invited to be one of the first to see this exceptional collection of BMW M cars (and the first M motorcycle), celebrating 50 years of BMW’s dedication to the high performance represented by the M badge.

On display will be 25 unique cars including the 1972 3.0CSL Batmobile, a 3.0CSL race car, an M1 Procar, an E36 M3 LTW, an E30 M3 DTM, and many newer M models. You’ll also have the first-ever M motorcycle from BMW Motorrad, the M1000 RR.

BMW CCA Foundation exhibits are always car-enthusiast-friendly. Take photos and post them on your favorite social-media apps and sites. Don’t forget to tag us with the hashtags #TheUltimateDrivingMuseum and #ThePowerofM.

“The Power of M” opens to the public May 16. For BMW M fans we also have three special events coming up May 13, May 14, and May 20.

May 13: Friday 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This private reception is a must for passionate M fans. Join us for a discussion of the M product development with our former Motorsport managers—Erik Wensberg, Larry Koch, and Matt Russell, along with BMW NA’s VP of Product Communications, Tom Plucinsky, who will share the nuances of US gray market development and how the US became the largest market for M cars. All attendants are also granted free access to the exhibit’s grand opening on Saturday before it opens to the public. Tickets for this exclusive event may be purchased here .

“The Power of M: Celebrating 50 Years” will be open from May 16, 2022 through January, 21, 2023. Museum hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The last guest admittance is one hour before closing.

This special exhibit is held in loving memory of our dear M patron and friend Eric Keller, principal of Enthusiast Auto Group (EAG) of Cincinnati, Ohio. Keller always fanned the flames for M passion by brokering exceptional M cars for many of us. Come sign his commemorative banner, to be given to his family after the exhibition is finished.

As always, our museum gift shop will have a wide variety of unique “The Power of M” exhibition books, posters, and merchandise to fuel your BMW obsession.

The automated shift assistant (ASA)

The new BMW Motorrad Automated Shift Assistant – abbreviated to ASA – is an innovative technical solution to simplify motorcycling, at the same time making it comfortable. Automating clutch control and gear shifting intensifies the riding experience without foregoing the emotional dynamics of shifting. The automated shift assistant is the logical and technical evolution of BMW Motorrad Shift Assistant Pro.

Automating clutch control and gear shifting delivers a totally new riding experience.

More enjoyment, less stress

The Automated Shift Assistant is impressive with its clever functional design where two electromechanical actuators automate clutch control and shifting of a conventional six-speed transmission. There is no need for a manual clutch control lever, which makes starting, stopping and maneuvering a breeze. This allows a greater focus on the riding experience with the automated shift assistant (ASA) due to its fast, rev speed- and load-based gear changes. The Automated Shift Assistant creates a more direct link to the powerful boxer engine, as precise clutch control makes it even easier to control riding enjoyment using the throttle grip and gearshift lever.

“M” shift mode

In “M” shift mode, the rider changes gear using the footshift lever and can decide when to shift gears. If the RPM in the rider's preferred gear is within the maximum or minimum RPM, then the shifting action is performed directly by the rider. If the RPM drops below a gear-dependent minimum RPM, then downshifting is automatic in manual mode, which prevents the engine from stalling.

“D” shift mode

The Automated Shift Assistant truly comes into its own in “D” shift mode. Precisely executed automated gear changes with smooth interruption of traction result in efficient acceleration of the motorcycle and contribute to increased riding stability. For instance, when upshifting, the shifting jolt produced by the traditional manual transmission is largely avoided, eliminating the risk of helmet contact between the rider and passenger. And, thanks to the powerful boxer engine, riding off is also easy on off-road terrain and on inclines with improved motorcycle control. In 'Dynamic' mode, the emphasis is on riding enjoyment.

Relaxed riding with full control

Downshifting is  very smooth to create as little disruption as possible in the suspension. Different riding modes optimize shifting and, combined with adaptive cruise control or front collision warning, bring the future of motorcycling alive today. Riding with the Automated Shift Assistant is also more relaxed, as operating the clutch lever and throttle twist grip needs less concentration, allowing the rider to focus on the riding situation.

Electromechanical actuators for the clutch and gearshift mechanism combined with ingenious electronic control.

Transmission Control Unit

Two electronically controlled electromechanical actuators control the clutch and gearshift mechanism, simplifying riding off and automating shifting. The rider's requested gearshift is transmitted to the control by a gearshift lever sensor, actuated by the conventional footshift lever. Additional sensors determine the rev speed of the transmission input shaft and the clutch position. These values are transmitted to the TCU (Transmission Control Unit), which is closely linked to the engine control unit, for clutch modelling and control, shift actuation and status control. The clutch is actuated by an electromechanical actuator combined with a hydraulic system with a direct hydraulic link between the clutch encoder and slave cylinder. The actuator regulates the required clutch slip and actuates the clutch during shifting, and opens it when stopping.

• Automatic adjustment of the shifting action to the rider’s desire for a more dynamic riding style in automated D mode.
• Avoidance of engine stalling caused by poor gear shifting.

Here’s what you should know for 2024 Season 2 Week 8, from April 30th to May 6th, 2024.

For the Members: iRacing Official Series Highlights

Every week, iRacing offers daily, even hourly racing that members can get into, based on where their license level is at. There are also some special series that run at specific times that anyone can jump into, with the right credentials, that offer a more meaningful sim racing experience. 

Here are a few of the highlighted series taking place this week.

NASCAR iRACING SERIES

Back in 2024, the NASCAR iRacing Series (Open Setup and Fixed Setup) follows the NASCAR Cup Series schedule for a 36-week racing season. Week 12 is set to take place at Kansas Speedway, a 134-lap event which utilizes the NASCAR Next Gen Stock Cars from Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota.

The races this week are scheduled for:

Fixed Schedule:  Wednesday, 21:00 GMT; Friday, 01:00 GMT; Saturday, 10:00 and 16:00 GMT; Monday, 01:00 GMT

Open Schedule:  Thursday, 01:00 and 19:00 GMT; Saturday, 01:00 GMT; Sunday, 14:00 GMT

FIA F4 ESPORTS REGIONAL TOURS

FIA F4 Esports Regional Tour races are a little different this season and moving forward. These series move to an every two-hour format. While all iRacers are eligible to run in any region’s event, the servers will always be set to the most appropriate iRacing server for each region. Europe North and Europe South have combined into one singular Europe region in 2024 Season 2.

Week 8 Schedule: 

• Americas (Every ODD hour, :15 after): Virginia International Raceway – North Course
• Asia-Pacific (Every EVEN hour, :45 after): Sandown International Motor Raceway
• Europe (Every EVEN hour, :15 after): Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello – Grand Prix

BMW M POWER TOUR – FIXED SERIES

The BMW M Power Tour returns in 2024 in part thanks to a collaboration between BMW and iRacing. The fixed setup series features a varied selection of BMW M Motorsport cars competing across the world’s top tracks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, every even two hours, with prizes on the line for the top three drivers in the overall standings at season’s end.

RAIN MASTER

Announced in Week 5 of 2024 Season 2, Rain Master is the latest Special Series on iRacing. For the remaining eight weeks in 2024 Season 2, those looking for some fixed setup wet weather racing can jump into the Ferrari 296 GT3 at eight different road courses around the world. The forecasts will include light rain throughout.

iRACING WEEKLY CHALLENGE

One of iRacing’s latest new series concepts returns for 2024 Season 2 —t he iRacing Weekly Challenge. If you’re into all forms of road racing, this is the series for you—it’s 12 weeks of different car and track combinations, with no repeats on either, for a season-long championship. Prove you’re the best at everything from sports cars to open-wheel racers on a global tour of some of iRacing’s most popular circuits.

Each week will feature points races every hour, leading up to a main event on Sunday at 20:15 GMT that features splits by weekly points. Races will be 20 minutes long and are open to iRacers with Class D licenses and higher. A separate set of points will also be tracked for the top splits of the Sunday main events on their own landing page. In addition, $5 in iRacing credits will be awarded each week to a random driver who makes the top split of the Sunday main event.

• HPD ARX-01c at Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans

RING MEISTER / DRAFT MASTER COMBINATIONS

Two of the more unique daily racing series added in recent seasons are the Ring Meister Ricmotech Series and the Draft Master Series, where the cars change every week as opposed to the tracks. This season, the setups are fixed in both series, which means it’s all about jumping in and racing the combination at hand.

The Ring Meister Ricmotech Series (Races on every odd 2 hours | Qualifying every even 2 hours at :30) takes place at the Nürburgring Nordschleife  – Industriefahrten and cycles through mostly road-type racing vehicles every week.

As for Draft Master (every hour), there are now three tracks—Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, and now iRacing Superspeedway as of 2024 Season 2—and now four NASCAR vehicles—the 2009 Impala COT, Craftsman Trucks, 1987 Cup cars and the current-day Next Gen—that each track will cycle through. This series now heads to Talladega for the middle four weeks of 2024 Season 2.

• Ring Meister: Global Mazda MX-5 Cup at Nürburgring Nordschleife  – Industriefahrten
• Draft Master: NASCAR Cup Series Next Gens at Talladega Superspeedway

eNASCAR COLLEGE iRACING SERIES

For the final time in the 2023-24 eNASCAR College iRacing Series powered by NACE Starleague, 25 of the top collegiate iRacers will take to Homestead-Miami Speedway on a special Friday night showdown on May 3rd to determine the championship. Over the course of the last eight months, hundreds of college-level sim racers have taken on the College Series, hoping to score scholarship prizes and pride for their teams. Now, 25 students from 25 institutions will battle for the ultimate prize.

We typically associate Isle of Man Green with M cars but this iX2 is far from being a performance vehicle. Now in its second generation, the crossover-coupe mashup offers a fully electric derivative. We spotted this swoopy SUV at a BMW dealership in Belgium where the zero-emission X2 was dressed to impress with the M Sport Package Pro.

Because compact cars are not what they used to be, BMW can comfortably mount 20-inch wheels on its smallest vehicles. This stylish two-tone set (873 M) is not even the biggest available for the X2. Upgrade to the M35i version and you can opt for 21-inch wheels. If you haven’t seen the new generation yet, it’s a lot bigger than its predecessor. It has been stretched by 2.6 inches and widened by 0.8 inches while height is up by 2.5 inches.

The X2 is so big now that we’re hearing reports that it’ll ultimately supersede the X4 . BMW has apparently decided not to renew the X4 with gasoline and diesel engines. There might be a fully electric iX4 on the Neue Klasse platform in the second half of the decade, but the ICE model’s days are numbered. Once the conventionally powered X4 is axed, expect the X2 to fill the void.

The X2 has undergone a radical makeover since it looks nothing like its predecessor. The iX2 gets a distinct kidney grille design the iX1 recently received as well. The two not-so-small electric crossovers don’t directly replace the quirky i3. A true entry-level EV with a lower asking price is unlikely to arrive until around 2028.

In the meantime, the iX1 and iX2 come in two flavors. There’s the front-wheel-drive eDrive20 and the all-wheel-drive xDrive30 with dual motors. The more stylish of the two EVs costs from €49,400 in Germany, rising to €56,500 for the more potent variant. Add the M Sport Package Pro, special paint job, and other upgrades – and you’ll be paying well over €60,000.

BMW has sadly decided against bringing the iX1 and iX2 to the United States where the i3 was retired in 2021.

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
