CNBC Select reviews the best travel insurance plans for families based on coverage, cost and plan variety. (See our methodology for more information on how we choose the best family travel insurance companies.)

Best family travel insurance

  • Best for families with young children : Allianz
  • Best for affordability : Faye
  • Best for CFAR coverage : Travel Insured International
  • Best for cruises : Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Best for families with young children

Allianz travel insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

10 travel insurance plans make it possible to customize your coverage. For families, Allianz's OneTrip Prime package covers children age 17 and younger when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

24/7 assistance available

  • Trip cancellation benefits can reimburse your prepaid, nonrefundable trip payments if you have to cancel your trip for one of the covered reasons stated in your plan documents.
  • Limited coverage for risky sports

Who's this for? Allianz is great for families with young children as its OneTrip Prime travel insurance policy offers free coverage for children ages 17 or under when traveling with a parent or grandparent. Though this benefit isn't available to Pennsylvania residents, it could help families with younger children lower the cost of their travel insurance coverage.

Standout benefits:  Allianz's cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage has an enhanced version available that can cover up to 80% of trip expenses if you have to cancel for a reason that's not covered.

Best for affordability

Faye travel insurance.

Faye offers travel insurance with a convenient online buying experience and an app with real-time travel alerts. It's one simple plan includes coverage for common issues, like trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses and trip delay coverage. It also offers coverage for pre-existing medical conditions when plans are purchased within 14 days of an initial trip deposit.

  • Covers Covid like any other medical condition
  • CFAR is available for up to 75% of trip costs for an additional cost.
  • Additional coverage options like vacation rental damage coverage and pet care coverage.
  • Not all benefits are available in all states.

Who's this for?  Faye travel insurance stands out for families on a budget. Its policies start at just $4.64 per day (for 14 days) for domestic trips and $5.16 per day (for 14 days) for international trips. It's also great for those who want a completely digital experience and would rather manage a policy through an app than an agent or by phone.

Standout benefits:  Faye's intuitive interface makes it easy to get travel insurance coverage on your own time, and quotes are available entirely online. On top of the standard trip delay, cancellation and interruption coverage, you can purchase CFAR coverage, coverage for adventure and sports activities and a pet care add-on, which can cover illness or injury for your pet when traveling with you, or extra kenneling costs if your trip is delayed if you leave your pet at home.

Best for CFAR coverage

Travel insured international travel insurance.

Travel Insured International has two simple travel insurance plans — the Worldwide Trip Protector and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold. Its plans are affordable and offer the option of cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

  • Optional CFAR coverage and interruption for any reason coverage
  • Medical coverage can be lower than other options

Who's this for?  Travel Insured International could be a great fit for families looking for the flexibility of a CFAR addition to ensure they'll be covered for any reason they need to cancel. The company's wide variety of reasons for cancellation includes coverage for school year extensions with all plans.

Standout benefits:  Travel Insured International's Worldwide Trip Protector can cover all children 17 and under for free when traveling with related adults.

Best for cruises

Berkshire hathaway travel protection.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

  • Wide variety of policies available
  • Strong financial strength rating by AM Best
  • Cancel for any reason only provides reimbursement for up to 50% of non-refundable trip payments

Who's this for?  Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection offers cruise-specific packages for families setting sail on a cruise.

Standout benefits:  Cruise plans include coverage for missed connections and unique challenges you could face on a cruise vacation, like cruise disablement and diversion.

Does travel insurance cover family members?

Generally, you can insure your whole family on one travel insurance plan, so you won't have to buy separate plans for every traveler. Your travel insurance plan will cover every person listed on the policy.

Does travel insurance cover cancellation due to a death in the family?

In many cases, travel insurance can help you recoup the cost of your vacation if you have to cancel due to a death in your family. However, you'll want to carefully read your policy's definition of a family member, as not everyone in your life could be included.

Bottom line

A family vacation can be a big investment, so it's important to protect yourself in case anything goes awry. Having a travel insurance plan that's easy to access, provides 24/7 support and fits your specific travel concerns and budget can help ensure your trip will go smoothly.

Our methodology

To determine the best travel insurance companies, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of travel insurance companies and compared them based on various factors.

While narrowing down the best travel insurance companies, we focused on the number of plans available, the availability of 24/7 assistance to access while traveling, coverage for Covid-19, the availability of cancel for any reason coverage, and financial strength (which measures a company's ability to pay on contracts) using A.M. Best ratings. We also considered family-friendly features, such as the inclusion of children on policies for free with parent's coverage, and reasons for cancellation, including school year extension as a reason for cancellation.

Note that the premiums and policy structures advertised for travel insurance companies are subject to fluctuate in accordance with the company's policies.

Family Travel Insurance

Make lifelong memories with your loved ones in exciting new places.

Wherever your family adventure takes you, make sure you pack the right travel cover.

Holidaymakers can understandably get confused as to whether they need family cover or whether they'd be better off with an individual policy for each person travelling.

As always, the right option depends on several factors, such as:

  • The size of your group
  • Who's travelling with you
  • If anyone has a pre-existing condition

It's worth taking some time to read up on and compare cover to make sure you get the best family travel insurance for your needs.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

What is Family Travel Insurance?

A family travel policy covers people from the same family who live at the same address, such as:

  • Step-parents
  • Grandparents
  • Aunts and uncles

You can have up to a maximum of two adults and five children on a family policy. You don’t need to have the same surname, but the adults need to live at the same address to be on the same policy (the children don't have to live with the adults to be on the same policy).

Admiral's Family Travel Insurance is available as single trip travel insurance , which covers you for one trip away from home for up to 365 days, or, if your family goes on several holidays a year, annual travel insurance .

Kids travel insurance

Separate children's holiday insurance isn't needed for any family member under the age of 24 as they can be added to an Admiral Family Travel Insurance policy. Anyone over the age of 24 will need to take out individual policies.

We offer three tiers of cover with increasing coverage and product benefits:

  • Admiral Gold
  • Admiral Platinum

Read the full list of benefits in the policy summary booklet .

Do I need a Family Travel Insurance policy?

Family holiday insurance is a really good idea to make sure everyone in your group is covered. We pay out if you need to cancel your trip for one of a number of defined reasons – so, if one of your children happens to be a little accident-prone, having the right cover in place at the time of booking your holiday could be wise!

If you're travelling with older relatives in their 60s or 70s, it's a good idea to look at travel insurance for over 60s and over 75s.

Our maximum age limit for annual multi-trip insurance is up to 75 years, while it’s up to 85 years for our single trip policies. The age limit and level of cover we can offer depend on your personal information and the details of your holiday.

If your child is going abroad, with you or a relative or friend, Home Office advice says the permission of everyone with parental responsibility must be given.

Mothers automatically have parental responsibility, but still need permission from the father if he's not travelling with you. The Home Office has a template letter you can use to show you have permission.

If children are travelling with any adult who has a different surname to them – even their parent or step-parent – it's possible your group will be stopped and questioned at border control.

It's therefore a good idea to take documentation with you. This might include a copy of the following certificates:

  • The child's birth certificate
  • Your marriage or divorce
  • Change of name

Our annual family travel insurance also covers under-18s if they're travelling with an adult who's not named on your policy.

So if a kind aunt, uncle or family friend offers to give you a break and take your children on holiday with them, this type of policy will give you peace of mind their belongings are covered and they will get the right treatment should they become ill while away.

If you're not sure if a family policy is best for you, call one of our advisors on 0333 234 9913 .

Travelling abroad as a family

When travelling to any country, whether for a holiday or work, it's wise to check Foreign Office advice about your destination. If you travel to a country where advice has been issued about things such as unrest, terror alerts or weather warnings, you risk invalidating your insurance.

If you're travelling in Europe, don't forget your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if it’s still in date. Otherwise you should apply for a new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) . They aren’t the same as travel insurance and don't give you the same level of cover, but they prove you're a UK resident and are therefore entitled to medical treatment and help when in a European country (except Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, where the EHIC hasn’t been valid since 31 December 2020).

Are there any exclusions?

As with any insurance policy, some things aren’t covered by Admiral Travel Insurance. If your family is planning to do any winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding, or you’re taking to the seas on a cruise, you’ll need to add our winter sports or cruise cover upgrades to your policy. Without these, your trip won’t be covered at all.

Exclusions include:

  • Not telling us about any pre-existing conditions
  • The pre-existing conditions of a relative not on your policy
  • Any losses or expenses you can recover from elsewhere, or are more specifically insured by another policy
  • Anticipated events
  • Coronavirus
  • Travelling against FCDO or medical advice

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913 .

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.

Your questions answered

Does travel insurance cover death of a family member.

You can make a claim if you have to cancel or cut short your trip because of a family member’s death, serious illness or serious injury, providing it’s not related directly or indirectly to any pre-existing medical condition.

Do you cover children under 18?

Cover can’t be bought for a child under the age of 18 alone. A child under 18 can be added to our family policies where at least one adult over the age of 18 is also going on the trip (single trip policies).

A child can be added to annual multi trip family policies where the insured adult will travel later in the policy term. Each insured child under the age of 18 will only be covered if they’re travelling with a responsible adult. This adult doesn’t need to be insured with us.

Can the adults on an annual multi trip policy travel separately?

Yes. This policy covers each insured adult, whether travelling on your own or together.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

Travelex

Why We Picked Travelex for Families

Travelex is our top-rated choice for family travel insurance thanks to its all-inclusive Travel Select policies. Travel Select plans include coverage for one child under the age of 17 with the purchase of an adult travel insurance policy. You could save up to 50% on coverage by purchasing a plan with Travelex if you have an equal number of children and adults traveling together.

If your family will be traveling as a group of adults, consider Travelex’s Travel Basic policy option, which is available from $60 for low-cost trips. This policy includes a host of general coverages competitive with other travel insurance providers, ranging from up to $15,000 in emergency medical coverage, $150,000 in emergency evacuation coverage and $500 in trip delay benefits. This can be a viable budget option for families looking for affordable individual protections.

Pros and Cons

Add-on options.

If you want to expand the coverage of your travel insurance plan, Travelex has the following upgrades:

  • Additional medical coverage
  • CFAR (cancel for any reason)
  • Car rental collision
  • Adventure sports cover
  • Flight accidental death and dismemberment

Based on quotes we obtained, a family of four going on a week-long, $8,000 vacation to Mexico should expect to pay $200  for a Travelex plan.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Why We Picked Berkshire Hathaway

If your family is traveling together, you could have a higher-value vacation that you need to insure. While most insurance providers place caps on the total trip cost they will reimburse, Berkshire Hathaway offers luxury coverage with higher-than-average limits. With the Berkshire Hathaway LuxuryCare plan, you can protect each traveler with up to $100,000 in individual cancellation protection — ideal for high-value international travel.

Berkshire Hathaway’s policies are a bit more expensive than competitors, which means premiums for families will be higher as well. However, its plans are also more inclusive, with up to $1 million in medical evacuation coverage and up to $2,000 for trip delay expenses. Berkshire Hathaway also offers unique plans for adventure travelers and cruise-goers, with specific coverages outfitted to your planned excursions.

Berkshire Hathaway’s LuxuryCare plan covers most travel expenses, such as in a medical emergency. Add-ons are available, but this level of coverage is comprehensive for international travel for families.

Based on quotes we obtained, a family of four going on a week-long, $8,000 vacation to Mexico should expect to pay  $168 for a Berkshire plan.

Generali Global Assistance

Generali Global Assistance

Why We Picked Generali Global Assistance

If you plan to visit an international destination with young children and you want to add another layer of safety, consider a travel insurance policy from Generali.

Generali Global Assistance is our top choice for international travel assistance, as all of its plans include 24/7 multilingual travel assistance that can help you while abroad. This can be a major benefit if you’re traveling to an area where you do not speak the primary language spoken, especially with young children. We also suggest considering Generali’s plans if you are looking for extra assistance planning your family’s trip, as all plans come with complimentary concierge pre-trip assistance.

  • Rental car damage on standard insurance plan, up to $25,000 per person per plan
  • Trip cancellation for any reason on premium travel insurance plan

Based on quotes we obtained, a family of four going on a week-long, $8,000 vacation to Mexico should expect to pay $359 for a Generali plan.

Allianz Global Assistance

Allianz Global Assistance

Why We Picked Allianz Global Assistance

Allianz is another top selection for families looking for free children’s coverage with adult travel insurance. The company’s OneTrip Prime policy option includes free coverage for children under the age of 17. However, you must purchase adult coverage and plan to travel with the child. Like Travelex’s family coverage, this could potentially save up to 50% on insurance costs for family vacations.

The OneTrip Prime policy is one of Allianz’s most comprehensive and inclusive options, with up to $100,000 in trip interruption coverage, $50,000 in emergency medical protections and $1,000 for lost baggage. This policy also includes a few unique inclusions, including up to $500 in last-minute travel itinerary changes.

The following add-on options come with Allianz Global Assistance:

  • Winter sports and ski insurance
  • Cancel anytime upgrade

Based on quotes we obtained, a family of four going on a week-long, $8,000 vacation to Mexico should expect to pay  $250 for a Allianz plan.

AXA Assistance USA

AXA Assistance USA

Why We Picked AXA Assistance

If you are planning to travel with your family to a remote area or partake in outdoor activities, consider AXA’s travel insurance policies. In the event of a medical evacuation or illness, AXA will arrange complimentary return transportation for a travel companion or unattended minor. In the event of a sudden medical emergency that leaves a minor unattended, AXA will arrange an escort to accompany the child and ensure their safe return home. This can be a major benefit and offer peace of mind if you’re a parent traveling alone with a minor child.

  • CFAR coverage available on the platinum plan
  • Collision damage waiver available on gold and platinum plans

Based on quotes we obtained, a family of four going on a week-long, $8,000 vacation to Mexico should expect to pay $276 for a AXA plan.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance policies often offer a range of coverage options for families traveling together, coverage can range from the basic needs to medical coverage abroad, and canceling for any reason. When traveling with a family, and incurring higher prices than individual travelers, travel insurance is worth the price . These include the following:

Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage

Trip cancellation coverage refers to circumstances that may force you to cancel a vacation before departure. Trip interruption coverage applies when you may have to cut your vacation short because of unforeseen circumstances. Most insurance policies cover you in both cases, however there are limitations in the included trip cancellation coverage for what’s included. Many insurance companies offer CFAR(cancel for any reason) coverage for insurance buyers that want peace of mind no matter the reason for canceling.

According to the participants in our study over the age of 54, 60% purchased CFAR coverage, and 19% purchased Interruption for any reason (IFAR) coverage.

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage reimburses you for medical costs should you have to pay for a medical emergency or need medical attention. Reimbursable events can include basic health care treatment, ambulance fees or repatriation costs in the event of a death. The maximum limit of coverage varies among insurance policies.

Baggage Loss, Delay and Damage Coverage

Most insurance policies give coverage if your luggage is delayed, lost or stolen on your family vacation (as long as the event isn’t your fault or is out of your control). The maximum coverage you can receive depends on the travel insurance policy.

If possessions within your baggage are particularly expensive or if together they add up to a high dollar amount, you may want your family insurance policy to have a larger coverage limit for baggage. You can also take out single-item coverage for something specific if it’s that valuable.

Does Standard Travel Insurance Cover Family Members?

Standard travel insurance policies cover you and your family members. The difference between standard travel insurance and family insurance is that family insurance typically covers families of two adults with at least one and up to eight children under 18.

With family travel insurance, you are offered peace of mind that your insurance policy has been crafted with families in mind to cover your needs.

Common Add-Ons

Common add-ons for travelers and families can include:

  • Winter sports coverage: For those hoping to ski or snowboard and partake in winter sports activities
  • Cruise coverage: For groups who will be venturing on cruises during their vacation
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage: A financial backstop if you  must cancel your vacation outside of the policy guidelines

How Much Does Travel Insurance for Families Cost?

The cost of travel insurance for families will depend on the number of family members, the location of the trip, the trip duration, and the total cost. The table below compares costs for basic coverage for a family of four going on a week-long $8,000 vacation to Mexico:

Is Family Travel Insurance Worth It?

Family travel insurance is necessary if you invest a lot of money for a grand family vacation. Knowing that you have comprehensive cover for every member of your party makes it more convenient for travels when you want protection from a range of eventualities.

With a range of family travel insurance policies available, families have ample choices to find a policy that matches their trip, coverage needs and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you travel separately on family travel insurance.

Some family policies let you travel separately, but you should check with your insurance provider and your policy terms to see if you’re covered.

Is it better to buy travel insurance as a group or individual?

Buying family and group travel insurance is much more convenient and easier to insure everyone on a trip. Group coverage is also likely to be less expensive than purchasing individual policies for every group member. Children sometimes get included for free in family policies.

Does credit card travel insurance cover a family?

You may have insurance to cover your whole family from the credit card you use to book your trip. This is something that varies by bank. You’ll need to talk to your credit card issuer to ask about travel coverage.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Travel Insurance Companies for Families

  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom.
  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $7,000 trip to the United Kingdom.
  • A 19-year-old taking a $2,000 trip to France.
  • A 27-year-old couple taking a $1,200 trip to Greece.
  • A 51-year-old couple taking a $2,000 trip to Spain.
  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Best Family Travel Insurance – Plans & Cost

Home | Travel | Best Family Travel Insurance – Plans & Cost

Traveling as a family can be fun but also nerve-wracking, so the best way to minimize stress is by having family travel insurance . That way, you know everyone in the family will be covered if anything goes wrong.

Jetlag, changes in normal schedules, and different food than usual can all make kids (and parents!) more prone to getting sick, which is why having a family travel insurance plan is key. Some plans will automatically include children under 17 for free in your coverage . Others require you to add each family member individually, so make sure you double-check the fine print.

Family at sunset, international travel insurance for families

Best family travel insurance – plans & cost

If you plan on taking multiple trips as a family throughout the year, annual family travel insurance is a great way to get coverage and save money. Otherwise, single-trip family travel insurance should give you everything you need.

Keep reading to find out what the best travel insurance for a family is and compare family travel insurance quotes . Let’s get into it!

Best travel insurance for a family

To sum it up, these are the best family travel insurance companies :

  • Travelex , the best affordable travel insurance for a family
  • World Trips , the best family travel insurance for high coverage
  • Allianz , a good family travel health insurance
  • AIG Travel Guard , one of the travel insurance plans that include children for free

What is family travel insurance?

Family travel insurance is exactly what it sounds like: a travel insurance plan that covers family members, including children, who are traveling together. In fact, a family travel insurance plan is the cheapest and easiest way for parents and kids to all get coverage since you’re paying a single price instead of shelling out for separate plans for each person.

Mother and son at the beach, best family travel insurance

As with most other travel insurance policies, travel insurance plans for families include medical coverage, trip cancellation/interruption/delay coverage, baggage loss coverage, and COVID-19 coverage.

The cheapest travel insurance for family is usually family travel health insurance , which offers an excellent amount of medical coverage but often only provides limited, if any, trip coverage. As such, it’s a great idea to sort out your priorities (do you need baggage loss coverage or is just emergency medical coverage enough?) before you purchase a family travel insurance policy .

How much is family travel insurance?

The cost of travel insurance for families depends on the ages of people being covered, your travel destination, and your home country/state. The length and cost of your trip will also factor into the price of your travel insurance family plan .

I have used the example of a 5-person family (two 40-year-old parents and children aged 10, 8, and 5) who live in Pennsylvania and need travel insurance for Europe to generate quotes. The family is going to Spain for a week and their trip costs $5,000.

*price used for example

1. Travelex , the best affordable travel insurance for a family

If you need the cheapest travel insurance for the family , look no further than Travelex . Their Travel Select plan is the most affordable travel insurance plan for families of all the ones I compared since children ages 1 to 17 are included at no additional premium if traveling with one paying adult. Even better, the plan offers a good amount of coverage in all categories.

Travelex, affordable family travel insurance plan

Features of this family international travel insurance include a $0 deductible for medical expenses and coverage for newborns. You’ll even enjoy coverage for sports equipment delays, so it’s the perfect family travel insurance for ski or surf trips.

If you need a higher amount of coverage, particularly for medical expenses, World Trips is a better option. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with travel insurance for families from Travelex.

2. World Trips , the best family travel insurance for high coverage

As you can see in the comparison chart above, World Trips comes out on top as the best travel insurance for families in terms of medical coverage. The Atlas Journey Preferred plan offers the highest amount of coverage in all categories, as well as COVID-19 coverage and newborn coverage.

World Trips, best family travel insurance

Even better, this family travel insurance plan offers a $0 deductible for medical expenses, which means 100% of medical expenses incurred will be covered by insurance. You can even choose to add Cancel for Any Reason insurance if you want coverage for just about any mishap.

One drawback is that this is the most expensive travel insurance family plan . If you want a better coverage-to-price ratio, Travelex is a great family holiday insurance to consider.

3. Allianz , a good family travel health insurance

Allianz is a great option if you’re looking for family travel health insurance. The OneTrip Prime plan’s medical-related coverage is quite high and includes COVID-19 coverage and a $0 deductible for medical expenses. Besides children aged 17 and under are covered for free when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

Allianz, cheap family travel insurance plan

Because this family travel insurance plan has rather low trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, this plan is best suited for families who just need travel medical insurance and aren’t worried about trip-related coverage.

Also, keep in mind that this plan doesn’t offer coverage for newborns or children under a year old. If you’re a new parent, you’ll want to go with World Trips or Travelex instead.

4. AIG Travel Guard , one of the travel insurance plans that include children for free

Another great family group travel insurance is AIG Travel Guard . Their Essential plan offers a fair amount of coverage in most categories for a pretty affordable price. You’ll also benefit from a $0 deductible for medical expenses and coverage for newborns. Besides, their plans include free coverage for one child aged 17 and under , who is traveling with and related to the primary adult listed on the policy.

AIG Travel Guard, family travel insurance plan

This family travel insurance plan even includes perks like concierge services and luggage tracking if you’re looking for an extra level of security. Unfortunately, however, AIG’s family travel insurance policy offers the lowest amount of emergency medical expense and baggage loss coverage out of all the plans I compared.

For this reason, AIG’s travel insurance for families is best suited for those who don’t need much medical or baggage loss coverage.

What is the best family travel insurance?

By now, you’ll know that the best family travel insurance overall is Travelex . Their coverage is great and it’s the most affordable travel insurance for families .

Boy with map, international travel insurance for families

If you prefer to have higher coverage and don’t mind the price, World Trips is the family travel insurance plan to consider. You’ll get the highest amount of coverage in all categories so you can feel secure while you travel the world as a family.

What kind of travel insurance do families need?

Finally, here are the most important things to consider when shopping around for a family travel insurance plan .

Medical travel insurance for unexpected illness or injury

The best family travel insurance will include coverage for medical expenses that result from an emergency like an injury or illness. This is the most important aspect of insurance since it means you can avoid overwhelming medical bills when you finally get back home. Of course, be certain that you and your traveling family members are covered under this benefit.

Trip cancellation insurance for family trips

Trip cancellation is another thing to consider when purchasing a travel insurance plan for families . Trip cancellation is a lifesaver for things like unexpected illness, political strife, or natural disasters, reimbursing you for certain travel expenses in case you need to cancel your plans.

However, not everything is covered under a cancellation trip policy. If you want to be able to get a refund in any case, you can consider checking if the company offers Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) insurance as an add-on.

Trip interruption insurance for going home early

Similarly, trip interruption will cover you and your children if the trip needs to be called off prematurely. For example, if you or anyone who’s traveling with you gets sick or injured unexpectedly and you need to return home early, you’ll be covered. This can also cover trip interruption for scenarios such as the death of a family member back home.

Some policies also cover work-related issues that interrupt your trip, reimbursing you for pre-paid travel expenses such as hotels and flights.

Baggage coverage for a family vacation

Lost, delayed, or damaged baggage can be a huge headache. Make sure your family travel insurance policy includes protection for you and traveling family members so you all can cover the costs of new clothes, personal care products, and toiletries.

Return of minor children

Lastly, return of minor children is something that is very specific to international travel insurance for families . If you fall ill and must stay in the hospital, your policy should cover the costs for your minor children (17 and under) to go back to your home country.

Be sure to check with your insurance provider since some companies require you to be hospitalized for a certain period of time (such as more than a week). Also, most companies will cover the costs for an attendant to accompany minor children as they return home.

I hope that you have a great time traveling with your family and that having family travel insurance makes planning a little easier. If you’ll be doing a road trip through the US, be sure to look into family travel insurance for the USA – domestic travel insurance works a little differently from international travel insurance.

Happy traveling!

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

The following destinations are the top insured destinations in 2024, according to Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner).

Costa Rica.

What is travel insurance?

CFAR explained.

Is travel insurance worth getting?

10 credit cards that provide travel insurance.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

The Essential Guide to Family Travel Insurance

The essential guide to family travel insurance .

Packing your bags, booking flights, and charting a course for adventure - the anticipation of new experiences fills family travels with excitement. Without a doubt, these trips will turn into cherished stories for years to come.

But Murphy's Law reminds us that anything that can go wrong will. Flight delays, lost luggage, sudden injuries—these are just a few curveballs that travel can throw your way. Family travel insurance can help protect your finances and ensure your family's well-being so you can focus on making the most of your precious time together.

Why Do You Need Family Travel Insurance?

Family travel is an incredible way to build relationships, explore new places, and create lasting memories. But we all know family travel also comes with its own set of hurdles. Here's a look at some of the unexpected hiccups that can arise on a family trip and how travel insurance can help you navigate them smoothly.

Imagine booking the ultimate European adventure for your family - exploring the ancient ruins of Rome, indulging in gelato in Florence, and gondola rides in Venice. But a week before departure, your 8-year-old comes down with a nasty ear infection, and the pediatrician advises against flying. Travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage could reimburse you for your non-refundable flights and pre-paid accommodation. This will help ease the economic burden of a missed vacation while allowing you to rebook when everyone's healthy.

Or imagine… while exploring a bustling market in Marrakech, your family's luggage is stolen. But you have an ‘international travel insurance for family’ with ‘baggage loss’ coverage. Now, it will help replace essential clothes, toiletries, and medications, ensuring your trip is not derailed by that missing suitcase.

Family travel insurance offers coverage against various disruptions, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and even flight delays. Be sure to choose a plan that provides the right coverage for each member of your travel crew.

How AXA Travel Protection Supports Your Family Trip

By understanding the different coverages offered by family travel insurance, you can choose a plan that best suits your family's needs and budget.

Medical Emergencies

When traveling with young children or aging parents, travel insurance with emergency medical coverage is essential. If your loved one has an accident or gets sick on your family trip, the last thing you want is to get stuck with a hefty medical bill in a foreign country

AXA’s Travel Protection Plans include the following benefits for your family:

  • Medical expenses: AXA Travel Protection can reimburse you for eligible medical expenses incurred during your family trip up to your plan's maximum benefit. This may include expenses for doctor visits, hospital stays, medical tests, ambulance transportation, medications, and even emergency dental care for accidental injuries.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: Offers benefits for hospital-to-hospital transport in the destination country, returning home for further treatment, or both if necessary.
  • Pre-existing medical condition waiver : If someone in your family has had medical treatment within the 60 days prior to purchasing the travel policy, you will want to purchase your family travel insurance as soon as possible to be eligible for a pre-existing conditions waiver, available on some of AXA’s plans.

Trip Cancellation, Interruption, or Delays

You never know when you might have an allergic reaction that could make travel difficult. Or severe weather at your destination could force closures. Or an urgent work situation back home might require you to return sooner than planned. With more travelers, the chances of someone facing a pre-trip issue can further increase.

If you or a family member needs to cancel or shorten the trip due to a covered reason, you can recoup some of your non-refundable expenses, which may include flights, hotels, tours, and cruises you have already paid for.

Additionally, if a trip gets delayed due to factors outside your control, AXA Travel Protection provides benefits for extra expenses like meals and accommodation while you wait to get back on track.

Baggage and Personal Belongings

You disembark from your flight, ready to explore your destination, but your suitcase is missing from the baggage claim. Frustrating, right?

This could happen to anyone, but the good news is that AXA Travel Protection Plans provides two types of coverage related to baggage.

  • Baggage and Personal Effects Coverage: It typically reimburses you for your lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items like clothes, toiletries, camera equipment, and jewelry. Baggage lost or stolen coverage typically applies to the privately owned items you bring for the trip.
  • Baggage Delay Coverage: Baggage delay coverage can be a lifesaver if your checked luggage gets stuck on its own journey. It can reimburse you for essential items like clothes and toiletries you need to buy while your luggage is delayed. What Is Family Travel Medical Insurance?

An international trip can be a great way to create unforgettable memories with your loved ones. However, it’s wise to consider the unpredictable issues that might occur, such as travel delays, injuries, and illnesses.

Family travel medical insurance is insurance that you purchase to protect your family in case the unexpected occurs while you are abroad. It typically includes medical benefits for the treatment of injuries and illnesses incurred abroad, emergency travel benefits (i.e. Emergency Medical Evacuation), and coverage for travel mishaps like the airline losing your checked luggage.

Family travel medical plans tend to vary in their coverages and coverage amounts, so it’s important to assess your family’s needs and  choose your plan accordingly . Plans like  Atlas Travel  offer increased flexibility by allowing you to select your deductible, coinsurance, and policy length.

Why Do I Need Family Travel Medical Insurance?

Here are three reasons to consider family travel medical insurance for your trip abroad:

1. No matter the destination you choose or the activities you plan, there’s always a chance you could encounter a travel mishap, accident, or illness that calls for global insurance coverage. Overseas vacations can expose travelers to new environments, unfamiliar foods, and foreign bacteria. Family travel medical insurance can cover eligible hospitalizations, surgery, travel delays, trip interruptions, and other expenses required to get your trip back on track.

2. Your regular health insurance may not cover you outside of your home country.  That’s why the  U.S. Department of State  recommends that you “ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas – and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation.” If it doesn’t, family travel medical insurance can provide the international coverage you need.

3. Your visa may require travel medical insurance or proof that you’ll be able to pay for unexpected expenses incurred in your host country.  Our  Atlas Travel  plan meets the requirements of many visas, including Europe’s  Schengen visa . Atlas Travel also provides policyholders a visa letter you can use to help prove your ability to pay for unexpected medical expenses.

What Does Travel Medical Insurance for Family Travel Cover?

In the face of an unexpected medical emergency abroad, family travel medical insurance can provide emergency travel assistance as well as important medical and emergency travel benefits.

Our  Atlas Travel insurance  plan pays 100% of eligible expenses within the U.S. PPO network and outside the U.S., after the deductible and up to the overall maximum limit. You can customize your Atlas Travel plan by choosing your deductible, coverage length, and overall coverage maximum. You can even increase your coverage amounts for several key benefits at purchase.

Some Atlas Travel Highlights Include:

  • Up to $2,000,000 of Overall Maximum Coverage
  • Up to $1,000,000 for Emergency Medical Evacuation
  • Medical benefits including Hospital Room & Board, Local Ambulance, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Dental (Acute Onset of Pain)
  • Up to $25,000 for Personal Liability
  • 7 deductible choices: $0, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000

Did You Know?

Over 56% of Americans are unsure whether their domestic health plan would cover emergency medical care outside the U.S, according to a   survey   from Insure My Trip.

Do you know if your regular health insurance will cover you during your family trip abroad?

Customer reviews

WorldTrips has a rating of 4.27 stars out of 5 on Squaremouth, based on 428 reviews of policies purchased through the travel insurance comparison site since 2008.

Heidi’s expert take:   “WorldTrips offers primary coverage for emergency medical expense and for baggage damage or loss. This means the insurer will pay for your claim first and then seek recovery from any responsible third party, such as your health insurance provider, airline or homeowners insurance company (if your belongings are stolen). Travel insurance with secondary medical coverage might be cheaper, but then you’d have to file claims with third parties yourself, before you could turn to your travel insurance for help.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

It has comparably low coverage limits, but if you have health insurance that will cover you on your trip, its $50,000 in secondary medical coverage may be sufficient.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Best travel insurance for add-on coverage options

AIG

Travel Guard Preferred from AIG allows you to customize your policy with a host of available upgrades, making it the best traveler insurance for add-on options . These include “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage , rental vehicle damage coverage and bundles that offer additional benefits for adventure sports, travel inconvenience, quarantine, pets, security and weddings.

There’s also a medical bundle that increases the travel medical benefit to $100,000 and emergency evacuation to $1 million. This is a good option if you’re looking for foreign travel health insurance.

See our full AIG travel insurance review .

  • Bundle upgrades allow you to customize your travel insurance policy.
  • Emergency medical and evacuation limits can be doubled with optional upgrade.
  • Base travel insurance policy has relatively low medical limits.
  • $300 baggage delay benefit requires a 12-hour delay.
  • Optional CFAR upgrade only reimburses up to 50% of trip cost.
Heidi’s expert take: “You can add riders to your AIG travel insurance policy to maximize your coverage. Choose from these bundles: adventure sports, medical, pet, quarantine, security and wedding. You may also want to add “cancel for any reason” coverage and rental vehicle damage coverage.”  Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Best travel insurance for cruise itinerary changes

Nationwide

Nationwide’s Choice Cruise is good travel insurance for cruises . It has a $500 per person benefit if a cruise itinerary change causes you to miss a prepaid excursion.

Choice Cruise also has a missed connections benefit of $1,500 per person after only a 3-hour delay when you’re taking a cruise or tour. But note that this coverage is secondary coverage to any compensation provided by a common carrier.

See our full Nationwide travel insurance review .

  • Benefits for cruise itinerary changes, ship-based mechanical breakdowns and covered shipboard service disruptions.
  • Non-medical evacuation benefit of $25,000 per person.
  • Missed connection coverage of $1,500 per person for tours and cruises, after a 3-hour delay.
  • Baggage loss benefits of $2,500 per person.
  • Travel medical coverage is secondary.
  • Trip cancellation benefit for losing your job requires three years of continuous employment.
  • No “cancel for any reason” upgrade available.

Nationwide has a rating of 4.02 stars out of 5 on Squaremouth, based on 570 reviews of policies purchased on the travel insurance comparison site since 2018.

Heidi’s expert take: “This plan has protections for cruisers when it comes to prepaid expenses. But its emergency medical coverage is secondary, which means you’d have to file medical claims with your health insurance company first. Since U.S. health insurance won’t help you at sea, you may want to look for cruise travel insurance with primary medical coverage instead.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Compare the best travel insurance plans

Travel Insured International

Via Compare Coverage’s website

TravelSafe

Heidi’s expert take: “Here are my tips on how to buy travel insurance that gets you the most coverage for the lowest price: Buy early . Getting travel insurance within two weeks of making your first trip deposit may qualify you for coverage of pre-existing medical conditions, and it won’t cost you any extra.  Look for primary emergency medical coverage . If you buy a plan with secondary coverage, you’ll have to file a claim with your health insurance first, even if you know it will be denied.  Don’t overinsure . Calculate the value of only your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses that are not already covered by other insurance (like credit card travel insurance or health insurance, if your coverage extends to where you are traveling). Even if this value is $0, you can still buy travel insurance for the travel medical insurance benefits, and you’ll only be paying for the insurance you need.  Understand exclusions . If you are planning to go scuba diving, for instance, make sure this adventure activity is not excluded from a policy’s coverage. If so, you may need to pay for a rider or shop for another plan that offers the coverage you need.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

How much is travel insurance?

The average cost of travel insurance is 5% to 6% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs .

How much you pay for travel insurance will depend on:

  • The cost of your trip.
  • Your destination.
  • The length of your trip.
  • The ages of travelers being insured.
  • Your state of residence.
  • The travel insurance policy you choose.
  • The total coverage amounts in your policy.
  • Any travel insurance add-ons you select.

How much travel insurance should I buy?

Travel insurance companies typically offer several plans with varying maximum limits. The higher the coverage limits, the more you’ll pay for travel insurance.

Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, recommends the following coverage limits for international travel:

  • Emergency medical coverage: At least $50,000.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: At least $100,000.

If you’re going on a cruise, or to a remote location, Squaremouth recommends:

  • Emergency medical coverage: At least $100,000.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: At least $250,000.

When evaluating travel insurance plans, our team of insurance analysts considered the best medical travel insurance policies to have at least $250,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

When should I buy travel insurance?

The best time to buy travel insurance is within two weeks of making your first nonrefundable travel payment, whether it’s for a plane ticket, hotel stay, cruise or excursion.

Travel insurance costs the same whether you buy it early or last minute, and buying it early has added benefits:

  • You may be able to add on “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage , an upgrade that is typically only available for a limited time after you’ve started paying for your trip.
  • You may qualify for a pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver, meaning your pre-existing conditions will be covered by travel insurance. This waiver is generally added to your policy automatically, provided you buy the travel insurance within a certain window after your first trip deposit.
  • You will be covered over a longer period of time for unforeseen events that could cause you to cancel your trip, such as medical emergencies, inclement weather and natural disasters.
Expert tip: You can buy travel insurance up to the day before you leave on your trip, but waiting may cost you the opportunity to qualify for a pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver or to buy a “cancel for any reason” upgrade.

Where can I buy travel insurance?

You can buy a travel insurance plan:

  • Online. Visit a travel insurance company’s website to buy a policy directly or use a comparison website like Squaremouth or Travelinsurance.com to see your options and compare plans. You may also be able to purchase travel insurance online through an airline, cruise, hotel, rental car company or other provider you book a ticket with.
  • In person. A travel agent or insurance agent may be able to assist you in buying travel insurance.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance of 2024. For companies with more than one travel insurance plan, we shared information about the highest-scoring plan.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • $3,000, 8-day trip to Mexico for two travelers age 30.
  • $3,000, 8-day trip to Mexico for two travelers age 70.
  • $6,000, 17-day trip to Italy for two travelers age 40.
  • $6,000, 17-day trip to Italy for two travelers age 65.
  • $15,000, 17-day trip to Italy for four travelers ages 40, 40, 10 and 7.
  • $15,000, 17-day trip to France for four travelers ages 40, 40, 10 and 7.
  • $15,000, 17-day trip to the U.K. for four travelers ages 40, 40, 10 and 7.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Best travel insurance FAQs

According to our analysis, WorldTrips has the best trip insurance. Two of its plans — Atlas Journey Explore and Atlas Journey Elevate — get 5 stars in our rating.

The best travel insurance policy for you will depend on what type of coverage you need. With so many different policies and carriers, the policy that was best for your friend’s trip to California might not be ideal for your trip to Japan. If you’re looking for the best travel insurance for international travel, you may be willing to pay more for higher coverage levels.

A comprehensive travel insurance plan bundles several types of travel insurance coverage, each with its own limits. To ensure you have adequate financial protection for your trip, your travel insurance policy should include the following travel insurance coverages:

  • Trip cancellation . With trip cancellation insurance , you’re covered if you need to call off your trip because of a reason listed in your policy, such as unexpected illness, injury or death of you, a family member or a travel companion, severe weather, jury duty and your travel supplier going out of business.
  • Travel delay. Once your trip has started, travel delay insurance reimburses you for unexpected expenses you incur after a minimum delay, such as five hours. It can cover needs like airport meals, transportation and even overnight accommodation.
  • Trip interruption. If you need to cut your trip early for a reason listed in your policy, trip interruption insurance can reimburse you for any prepaid, nonrefundable payments you’ll lose by leaving early. It can also pay for a last-minute one-way ticket home.
  • Travel medical . Emergency medical benefits are especially important if you need international health insurance for travel outside of the country. Your domestic health insurance may provide limited coverage once you leave the U.S. The best travel medical insurance pays for ambulance service, doctor visits, hospital stays, X-rays, lab work and prescription medication you may require while traveling.
  • Emergency medical evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote area, or planning excursions such as boating to an island, emergency medical evacuation coverage is a good idea. This coverage pays to transport you to the nearest adequate medical facility if you are injured or sick while traveling.
  • Baggage delay. After a certain waiting period, such as six or 12 hours, this coverage will reimburse you for necessities you need to buy to tide you over while you wait for your bag to arrive. Be sure to save your receipts and look at your coverage limit, as some caps are low, like $200.
  • Baggage loss. Baggage insurance can reimburse you if your bag never arrives, or if your personal belongings are stolen during your travels. Coverage limits apply here, as well as exclusions for certain items such as electronics.

“Typically, travelers are expected to pay their expenses out of pocket, and then file a claim for reimbursement,” said James Clark, spokesperson for Squaremouth. “However, there are medical situations in which a provider may be required to pre-authorize payment to make sure the policyholder receives the treatment they need.”

According to Clark, “Providers can pre-authorize payment for medical care and emergency evacuations. With that said, every circumstance is unique, and providers will handle each situation on a case-by-case basis.”

Travel insurance covers your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs — as well as extra money you may need to spend due to unforeseen circumstances and emergencies — both before and during your trip.

Travel insurance coverage varies by plan, but in general travel insurance covers costs associated with these problems:

  • Bankruptcy of a travel insurance company, such as your airline or tour operator.
  • Dangerous weather conditions.
  • Delayed and lost luggage.
  • Illness or death in your family that requires you to stay home or cut your trip short.
  • Illness that needs medical attention.
  • Injury requiring medical evacuation.
  • Jury duty.
  • Travel delays and missed connections.
  • Theft of your personal belongings while traveling.
  • Unexpected job loss.

Travel insurance policies often exclude or limit “foreseeable” losses. Typical travel insurance exclusions include:

  • Accidents or injuries caused by drinking or drug use.
  • Canceling your trip because you changed your mind.
  • Ending your trip early because you changed your mind.
  • Losses caused by intentional self harm, including suicide.
  • Losses due to war, civil disorder or riots.
  • Medical tourism.
  • Medical treatment for pre-existing conditions.
  • Mental health care.
  • Natural disasters that begin before you buy travel insurance.
  • Non-medical evacuation.
  • Normal pregnancy.
  • Medical treatment related to high-risk activities.
  • Routine medical care, such as physicals or dental care.
  • Search and rescue.

Your U.S. health insurance may provide little or no coverage in foreign countries. Check with your health insurance company to see if you have any global benefits and ask how they work. If your health care does extend across the border, the benefits it provides abroad may not be the same benefits it provides domestically.

Medicare usually won’t pay for health care outside of the United States and its territories, so older travelers planning an international trip should look into the best senior travel insurance with robust medical benefits.

The best time to buy travel insurance is immediately after booking your trip and making a nonrefundable payment — in other words, as soon as you’re at risk of losing money. This way, you’ll know the total cost that you need to insure and you’ll have the longest window to take advantage of your policy’s benefits if something goes wrong.

You can’t wait until something goes wrong and then buy travel insurance to get reimbursed for your loss. Travel insurance only covers unexpected losses.

Travel insurance companies can decline to cover travel to certain countries. For example, you may find that some trip insurance companies don’t offer coverage to countries with a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory from the U.S. State Department.

Travel insurance policies also frequently exclude certain risks that you’re more likely to encounter in Level 4 or Level 3 countries. For example, your policy may not cover losses related to declared or undeclared wars or acts of war or losses related to known or foreseeable conditions or events.

Some credit cards , such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , offer benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance and trip delay reimbursement when you use your card to pay for your trip.

Ask your credit card issuer for your card’s benefits guide to see what coverage you may have. Keep in mind that it may not cover all the risks you want to protect against, such as the cost of international health care or emergency medical evacuation .

Business travel insurance makes sense if you are self-employed and paying for your own travel expenses, or if you are traveling internationally and want medical coverage abroad.

You might also consider buying travel insurance for a business trip if your company won’t cover extra expenses if your flight is delayed or you need to head home early.

Cruise travel insurance can help protect you financially if you need emergency medical care in a remote location, or if a delayed flight causes you to miss embarkation and you need to pay extra to catch up to your cruise.

Experts caution that travel insurance you buy through a cruise line may not be as comprehensive as plans you can buy directly from travel insurance companies.

Some travel insurance plans cover rental cars as an optional upgrade, for an additional cost. The 5-star rated travel insurance companies in our rating offer these optional rental car benefits:

  • Travel Insured International — Rental car damage and theft coverage of $50,000.
  • WorldTrips — Rental car damage and theft coverage of $50,000 with a $250 deductible.

Travel insurance typically only covers a single trip, although your insured trip can have multiple destinations.

If you’re looking to insure several trips in the same year, annual travel insurance may be a good option for you.

Travel insurance may be required, depending on the country you plan to visit. But it’s smart to consider buying a travel insurance policy for international travel, even when it is not required. A good travel insurance policy can protect you financially if you need emergency medical assistance when traveling, or if you need to cut your trip short and buy a last-minute plane ticket home because an immediate family member is ill.

What is annual travel insurance?

Coverage options in annual travel insurance plans, how much does annual travel insurance cost, purchasing annual travel insurance, annual travel insurance frequently asked questions, how annual travel insurance works.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Annual travel insurance offers multi-trip coverage for travelers taking several trips over a year.
  • Annual travel insurance can be cheaper and more convenient but is less flexible than single trip insurance.
  • A 30-year-old US resident can expect to pay between $125 to $700 for annual travel insurance.

The more you travel, the higher your chances are that something goes wrong. Fortunately, coverage is available that can soften the financial blow if you get sick, lose your luggage, or experience some other hiccup while abroad.

While single trip travel insurance can cover one-off trips, frequently travelers may want annual travel insurance, which covers all your trips throughout a year. Read on to learn what annual travel insurance covers, how much you can expect to pay, and when you should buy.

Annual travel insurance, also called multi-trip insurance, is a type of insurance policy that protects you from potential losses on all trips in a 12-month period.

An annual travel insurance plans is more expensive than one single trip policy, but annual travel insurance becomes increasingly cost-effective as you take more trips. Buying annual travel insurance is also more convenient than shopping for travel insurance every time you take a trip. As such, these policies are particularly good for people who travel for work.

While annual travel insurance offers more convenience over single trip policies, you forfeit some flexibility offered in single trip travel insurance. For one, annual travel insurance limits the maximum number of days it will cover in one trip . This threshold varies from provider to provider, but generally it's up to a maximum of 90 days.

"During the coverage period, a traveler can move between countries and remain covered on the same insurance policy," says Rajeev Shrivastava , chief executive officer at VisitorsCoverage , a travel insurance marketplace. "With 30-day coverage, the plan is no longer valid on day 31. The traveler needs to return to their home country, resetting the 30 days and allowing them to resume travel."

Additionally, some annual travel insurance policies only cover trips a certain distance (say, 100 miles) from your residence or farther. Make sure to note these limitations before purchasing your policy — particularly if most of your travel is domestic.

Annual travel insurance coverage varies by plan and provider, but it is generally less comprehensive than a single trip policy.

Annual policies typically include coverage for emergency medical care, medical evacuations, trip delays, and lost or stolen baggage. Most basic plans do not cover trip cancellations (though a few more comprehensive ones do). If you're looking for cancellation reimbursement, you may want to purchase a single-trip plan with cancel for any reason coverage.

Here are just a few things a basic annual travel insurance plan might include:

  • Trip cancellation for covered reasons
  • Trip interruption
  • Trip delays
  • Missed connections
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Baggage delay
  • Rental car damage or theft
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Repatriation of mortal remains

Limitations and exclusions to annual travel insurance

As we mentioned earlier, annual travel insurance plans are less flexible compared to single trip plans. While this affects how many days are covered in one trip, it'll also limit what you can cover. For one, coverage limits are usually lower throughout the policy.

Most notably, annual travel insurance plans do not offer cancel for any reason coverage . To receive reimbursement for a canceled trip, you must have canceled for a covered reason, such as illness or a disaster at your travel destination.

Depending on your provider, you may be able to add coverage for adventure sports injuries or purchase an adventure sports-specific policy, as these are not covered by standard travel insurance.

"Annual travel insurance doesn't cover losses that arise from expected or reasonably foreseeable events," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Travel Insurance . "If your trips involve high-risk adventure — like skydiving, caving, mountain climbing, or participating in any athletic competition — your annual policy may not cover medical care if you sustain injuries."

Your age, the number of trips you plan to take, where you live, and other factors will figure into the cost of your coverage. For a 30-year-old US resident taking an estimated eight trips per year, all for fewer than 30 days each, annual travel insurance plans cost roughly between $125 and $700 , according to an analysis of plans on travel insurance comparison platform SquareMouth.

For example, under Seven Corner's travel insurance , one of the companies listed in our guide on the best international travel insurance companies for its long-term coverage, a 30-year-old US resident taking trips to eight destinations (including the US) would pay $375.50 for the annual plan with the lowest annual cancellation limit ($2,500) and $648 for the highest ($10,000).

"The per-trip length of coverage is usually a determining factor of the cost," Shrivastava says. "The longer the trip duration, the more expensive the policy can be."

Since annual travel insurance plans cover you for a full year, consider purchasing your policy right before your first trip. Strategic purchase dates could help you stretch your coverage period to cover more travels, but don't ignore the drawbacks of this approach.

First, you could forget. A lot goes into preparing for a trip, so leaving your travel insurance until the last minute could cause it to fall through the cracks. If you do opt to wait, make sure you set an alarm or calendar reminder.

Additionally, if you wait too long, your policy may not cover any pre-existing medical conditions. Some travel insurance companies will only cover pre-existing conditions if you buy your policy within 14 days of making your first trip payment.

As Durazo puts it, "Whether you're choosing an individual or annual policy, the best time to purchase insurance is always at the same time as you book your travel."

Assess your travel needs

Annual travel insurance isn't right for everyone, but if you travel often, it might be a good fit. Before you take out your policy, have an idea of what travels you'll take in the next year, and use the following chart to help guide your decision.

"These plans are ideal for frequent travelers such as business travelers, digital nomads, or other avid travelers," Shrivastava says. "They aren't a fit for travelers who are only taking one or two trips per year or someone looking for a more comprehensive range of benefits."

Yes, many policies include an option to add family members when you buy your policy, though. However, terms will vary depending on the insurance provider.

Some insurers allow you to automatically renew your annual travel insurance when it expires, though you can also wait until you're going on another trip to re-purchase. You can cancel annual travel insurance at any time, but you will only receive a refund if you cancel within your policy's money-back guarantee period and your trip hasn't started yet.

Pre-existing conditions can be covered under an annual travel insurance plan as long as you meet certain requirements. Policies often require that you buy travel insurance within a certain number of days from when you placed a deposit on your trip, usually two to three weeks. Additionally, many travel insurance providers require that your condition is stable.

Is travel insurance worth the cost?

C lare Fisher has only had to use travel insurance once in all the years she’s been jet-setting around the world with her family, but she says she would never go without it.

“I have heard far too many stories from family and friends where people have been left to fork out fortunes because they didn’t have travel insurance after something happened during their travels,” says the mum-of-three and full-time travelling content creator behind the Instagram account @traveltheworldfamily.

“The thing is, you think it will never happen to you and sometimes it just does.

“As well as giving you peace of mind, if you do end up needing to claim, it could save you a lot of money.”

Travel insurance covers expenses and risks associated with being a tourist, whether for business or leisure, and packages can cater for both domestic and international travellers. This can include medical expenses, but also assistance with lost passports, money wires and rebooking cancelled flights.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires are also often covered, and packages can usually be customised to the needs of the customer and their destination.

Growing markets

It is a big market. In the US alone, the industry is projected to reach a value of $5.5 billion by 2028 from $4bn in 2022, according to a report on researchandmarkets.com.

Within the study, this is attributed to increasing disposable income and a rise in business tours and travel. This year, international tourism will increase by 15 per cent year-on-year, according to data shared by United Nations World Tourism Organisation last month. It is also projected to exceed 2019 levels by 2 per cent.

Another reason for the market’s growth is that insurance providers have become savvier in terms of their offerings, expanding the availability of products, including single and multi-trip, as well as annual, policies, plus add-ons such as adventure tourism and more. The convenience of buying through online channels helps, too.

There has also been a growing awareness of the importance of having a policy in place. Nearly half of Americans have faced fines or had to bear the cost of damages when travelling without insurance at some point, according to a 2021 survey by insurance provider Battleface. The Covid-19 pandemic also presented many issues for anyone who was away from home when they got sick or when lockdowns were announced.

The same research found 36 per cent of Americans were more inclined to buy insurance now than pre-pandemic, particularly for international travel.

At the same time, the pandemic made customers more sceptical of the benefits, as many providers were ill-prepared to offer coverage for trip cancellations due to death.

The recent research also shows individuals in underdeveloped and developing nations are more reluctant than ever to pay for insurance services.

Check the fine print and don't skimp on costs

Fisher secures her family’s policy with a bank account subscription that provides the travel insurance, phone insurance and car breakdown cover, among other things. “We travel a lot, so having a subscription like this that we never have to renew is a big perk for us and the whole family is covered,” she says.

But the policy only covers them for up to 31 days on one trip, so for any long stints it will require extra or different types of coverage.

She advises everyone to search for the best prices, but “make sure you are aware of absolutely everything you are and aren’t covered for”.

“While that fine print may be pages and pages long, it’s worth reading or calling and going through your policy with your provider,” she says. “You might be surprised about some of the things you are covered for and this could provide some emotional and financial relief in situations you just never expected to get it.”

It’s also important not to assume you’re covered for everything, she adds. “Especially if you’re looking for the cheapest price, as you could very well be sacrificing important cover.”

For example, if you plan to take part in any experience or activities, whether that’s a walking tour or bungee jumping, it’s worth checking whether or not these are covered if anything goes awry.

It’s also important to declare any previous medical history, no matter how small it may seem, as it might just void the policy.

“It’s worth checking that the package you’re looking at covers you in these situations and any reasons and circumstances why you might not qualify,” says Fisher. “Your level of cover can be tailored to you, so it’s always best to chat to someone.

“I’d also say it’s helpful to call ahead of your trip and ask what details you should keep to hand and are likely to need to provide, as it can be stressful trying to frantically find this in the already stressful situation you may find yourself when needing to use your travel insurance.”

The best time to buy travel insurance

After you’ve made your first or larger booking is the time to purchase your policy, says Terry Boynton, co-founder and president of Yonder Travel Insurance. “Start by insuring your initial deposit and increase the trip cost insured under your policy each time you make an additional payment towards your trip,” he adds.

“Once you’ve nailed down your trip details, you can determine what benefits will be important to have included in your plan.”

The earlier you get it, the more peace of mind you’ll have before the trip even begins. For example, if a weather-related issue, sickness or family emergency comes up that means you cannot go any more, these trip costs will be protected if you have already bought insurance.

Another reason to buy early is so you can choose optional add-ons such as Cancel for Any Reason or Pre-Existing Condition Waivers, which often must be bought within a specific time frame after the initial deposit.

It is possible, however, to buy travel insurance up until the day before your departure. Coverage wouldn’t apply if you try to buy a policy after an accident or natural disaster at your destination.

The Fishers had to use their policy when their son poked himself in the eye with a straw and they needed to get it checked by a doctor at a hospital where they spoke no English. “We felt so much better knowing that we had insurance, especially when we called from where we were and spoke to someone,” says Fisher.

“I will never forget why I believe so much in it. When I was in school, a friend of mine went on holiday and her dad drowned in the sea. The family had such a difficult time, had to fly him back home and I remember hearing about how helpful the insurance company was through it all and what some of the costs associated with this would have been if they hadn’t had it.

“When your family has suffered a loss like this, money and the logistics is the absolute last thing you want to be worrying about,” she adds.

“If you’re travelling in any capacity, I can’t think of any reason that you shouldn’t have travel insurance.”
