Zac Efron Reveals a Glimpse of His Gorgeous Hollywood Hills Home

By Joyce Chen

Zac Efron

Zac Efron’s home is as dreamy as the heartthrob himself is. The notoriously private Baywatch star invited Vogue into his luxurious, secluded Hollywood Hills home for a recent episode of the magazine’s “73 Questions” series — kind of. Efron kept the tour to the outside of his five-bed five-bath home, particularly his expansive backyard, where he grilled up some tasty food while showing off the 5,6444-square-feet home’s breathtaking view of downtown Los Angeles . He answered questions pertaining to his biggest guilty-pleasure album ( Celine Dion ’s greatest hits album), his spirit animal (a hawk), and the best thing he’s retained since childhood (that would be his dignity). He also admitted to having a poster of a bathing suit-donning Tyra Banks in his childhood bedroom. Now, however, his current home has a different celebrity poster in it: In the video, Efron poses next to a life-size cutout of . . . himself.

The former Disney star first purchased the Zen $3.995 million home, located just five miles from the house he purchased back in 2008, in 2013. An avid griller, Efron also has a chef’s kitchen, a gym and a stunning outdoor pool to work off the calories, and a spa with a waterfall feature. Other amenities include a wine cellar and a state-of-the-art electronic security system to keep prying eyes away from the private superstar.

An actor should feel comfortable and at ease in his home because part of his job entails personifying numerous identities and beings, some of whom may or may not be him. A performer’s home should encourage him to maintain his sense of reality and humility. A place with natural materials and natural light makes the entire area gorgeous and like your home because their everyday routines involve using a camera and a spotlight.

House in Byron Bay

On Australia’s far north coast, in the state of NSW, sits the seaside community of Byron Bay . The area, which includes Australia’s most easterly point and the famous Cape Byron lighthouse , is renowned for its breathtaking beaches, distinctive food and retail options, top-notch festivals, and a strong sense of community. Byron Bay is unmistakably laid-back overall, despite its recent increase in popularity. The laid-back character of what was once a sort of hippy commune hasn’t been lost as the trendy beach town has grown and added several attractions.

Zac Efron bought a home in Byron Bay, Australia recently and sold out the property in Los Angeles. There were several apprehensions of him moving to the land down under. The actual location and images of the house are yet to be disclosed but here are some facts about the house, according to sources:

There are five big bedrooms in the house, the master bedroom which has stairs leading to a walk-in closet on the mezzanine and its bathroom.

The house offers stunning ocean views and has private stairs down to Wategos Beach. The basement houses a wine cellar, a playground, and a yoga room.

Taking a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at Zac Efron's $5.3 million dollar home in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California

Spencer See

Zac Efron

Zac Efron became a household name after starring in Disney's hit film series High School Musical . Since then, he has starred in several standalone movies such as Baywatch, Dirty Grandpa, the Neighbors movies, 17 Again, and many others. He is also a Daytime Emmy Award winner and a People's Choice Award winner. With several notable performances on the big screen, have you ever wondered how a successful actor like him lives?

Well, wonder no more.

This article features Zac Efron's $5.3 million home in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California.

In buying the property, the High School Musical star shelled out nearly $4 million. Fast forward to 2021, when Efron starred opposite Hollywood megastar Jessica Alba in Dubai Presents: A Five-Star Mission, he also decided to migrate to Australia. As a result, Efron unloaded his Los Feliz home.

Originally, Efron listed the home with an asking price of $5.9 million. However, he eventually settled with a $5.3 million sale. Despite selling the home lower than the original asking price, Efron still managed to enjoy profits worth more than a million dollars.

Here are some photos of Zac Efron's $5.3 million home in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California.

Originally built in 1964, Efron's Los Feliz home has gone through changes since then. It encompasses 5,644 square feet of living space. Furthermore, the home includes four bedrooms and five bathrooms. Aside from the main home, there also lies a guest house.

Efron's abode features wooden floors, tall windows, a decent dining area, a family room, a spacious living room with a fireplace and a balcony, a gourmet kitchen, a game room with a ping pong table, some interesting collections such as a skateboard collection and a Bruce Lee painting, a home gym, and a master bedroom with its own fireplace and a sleek bathroom.

While Efron probably enjoyed the home's interior, the backyard also has plenty to love about. The High School Musical star can certainly enjoy the fresh air and the overlooking views from the property. Moreover, his property also features an outdoor swimming pool, an outdoor dining area, and much more.

The home is certainly fit for a Hollywood star like Efron. As a result, it isn't surprising that the 17 Again actor made this his main residence for quite some time.

Efron is relatively successful when it comes to establishing a career after a Disney stint. As a result, Efron can certainly afford to live a luxurious lifestyle. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Efron has a net worth of around $25 million .

With the intention of moving to Australia, it made sense for Efron to unload his Los Feliz home. In fact, he took $2 million from his pockets to purchase a property in Australia.

Nevertheless, this is all the information that we have on Zac Efron's $5.3 million home in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California.

Zac Efron has officially left his home up high for the land Down Under. After reportedly buying a property in Australia, the actor and host of Netflix’s “Down to Earth” just sold his scenic spot in the hills of Los Feliz for $5.3 million.

He’ll walk away with a nice profit compared with the $4 million he paid for the house in 2013.

The property enjoys a hillside perch in the Oaks, a celebrity-filled neighborhood on the west side of Los Feliz that sidles up against Hollywood Hills. Views are the main draw, as the home features walls of glass, terraces and multiple outdoor spaces overlooking the city below.

zac efron house tour

Built in the 1960s as what the listing describes as a “stylish zen contemporary compound,” the two-story structure has a few features that set it apart from the neighbors. A long, covered walkway approaches the entry, and inside, a gold fountain flows at the bottom of a brick wall.

Other highlights include a gym, wine cellar, game room and a handful of custom fireplaces that anchor the common spaces. Four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms complete the main house, and the guesthouse adds one of each for a total of 5,644 square feet.

Two sets of stairs navigate the backyard. One descends to a spa, and the other leads straight into a swimming pool perched at the edge of the property. The grounds cover just under an acre.

A native of San Luis Obispo, Efron rose to fame through the “High School Musical” trilogy from 2006 to 2008. In the years since, the 33-year-old has starred in “17 Again,” “Neighbors,” “Dirty Grandpa,” “Baywatch” and the 2019 film “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.”

Kathrin Nicholson of the Agency held the listing. John Fanelly of Del Rey Urban Brokerage represented the buyer.

Check out Zac Efron’s $5.9 Million Los Angeles Home

zac efron house tour

For the past few months, Zac Efron has been sitting out the COVID pandemic alongside his Australian girlfriend, model Vanessa Valladares, in Byron Bay on Australia’s Gold Coast. Whether it’s the delights of Valladares or the delights of Byron Bay that have proved more appealing, who knows? Either way, it looks like Efron might be on the verge of putting roots down in the beachside town. And he’s moving fast. This month, the “High School Musical” alumni showed the first signs of abandoning his base in LA when he listed his longtime home in the foothills of the Hollywood Hills. Listed with the mammoth price of $5.9 million, the house has been Efron’s home for the past 7 years. Bought in 2013 for the comparatively small price of $4 million, it’s witnessed Efron’s ascent from a teen heartthrob to a bona fide movie star. But now it looks like the love affair might be over. So, other than a huge mortgage, what can the lucky new owner expect when they move in? For a start, a very different house to the one Efron purchased in 2013. As us.hola.com writes , Efron has made numerous changes over the past 7 years, including upgrading the swimming pool and spa to show off the surrounding views of downtown L.A. and the Pacific Ocean to their full advantage. As to everything else? Find out for yourself as we check out Zac Efron’s $5.9 million Los Angeles home.

The Neighborhood

As dirt.com notes , Efron’s LA mansion sits at the end of a gated driveway in the Oaks, a hugely desirable neighborhood set in the Hollywood Hills that’s long been associated with the rich and the famous. Leo DiCaprio lives there, as does Kristen Bell, Jon Hamm, Colin Farrell, and James Cameron. Angelina Jolie famously moved into a $25 million mansion in the neighborhood after finalizing her divorce from Brad Pitt. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery and boasting numerous architectural landmarks (including Lloyd Wright’s iconic Mayan Revival-style masterpiece, Samuel-Novarro House), it’s a leafy, pretty neighborhood with a superbly convenient location, some very famous faces, and some truly outstanding properties.

The Listing

Tucked back from the road at the end of a sweeping gravel driveway, Efron’s palatial LA home consists of a two-story main house with four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, along with a separate one-bed/one-bath guesthouse complete with its own fitness room and sauna box. In total, the property spans 5,644 square feet. With a contemporary, Zen-inspired interior, panoramic views over the surrounding area, and replete with gorgeous details like accent walls, warm woods, wide expanses of glass and custom fireplaces, it’s a stunning home (or, as the listing agent’s website puts it, the ‘perfect celebrity haven’) with more than enough features to justify that astronomical listing price.

Step Inside Zac Efron’s Mansion

Step inside the front door of the property and your attention will instantly be drawn to the majestic golden water feature in front of you. If you manage to drag your eyes away from that, you’ll find a huge living room tucked just off the foyer. A huge, strikingly asymmetrical fireplace with a cantilevered hearth stands at one end of the impressive lounging area. Just off the living room is an adjoining dining room. Floor to ceiling windows dominate one side of the wall (as, indeed, they do in the living room) while the other walls are decorated with rows of vintage skateboards. Leading off from both the living and dining rooms is a wrap-around terrace offering sweeping views from downtown LA to the Pacific Ocean.

Moving onto the kitchen, you’ll find a high-ceilinged space equipped with a huge range of modern appliances and conveniences. Like the rest of the interior, the style is minimalist and Zen-like, with simple wooden cabinets and sleek, stylish features. If Efron likes to cook, he’ll find no shortage of gadgets to work with here. Spilling away from the kitchen is a snug looking family room with a picture window offering gorgeous views over the property’s landscaped grounds. The furnishings are low key, but a retro pinball machine adds a touch of character.

zac efron house tour

Scattered around the lower level of the house are three guest bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom (and, of course, magnificent views over the surrounding city), along with a ping-pong table equipped games room. Along the width of the house runs a magnificent terrace with distinct dining and lounging areas. Exterior staircases linking the terrace to multiple decks complete the indoor-outdoor living vibe of the property. Tucked into the dining deck is a spa. The spa’s runoff water flows down to the swimming pool some three or four feet below. All in all, the property is believed to occupy around 1 acre of ground. Its currently listed by Kathrin Nicholson at The Agency.

Where Next for Efron?

Efron is currently believed to be house hunting around the Gold Coast after spending the last few months holed up in a rental property in Byron Bay. Efron has yet to confirm the rumors, but he wouldn’t be the first Hollywood A-lister to become entranced by the Gold Coast’s attractions. The beachside community is already packed with celebs, including “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth, who owns a custom-built mansion in the area. According to Dirt.com, Matt Damon is rumored to have recently sunk $22 million into a contemporary villa overlooking Wategos Beach. Other stars to make their home on this little part of the coast include Elsa Pataky, Olivia Newton John, Carrie Bickmore, and Gemma Ward.

‘The Iron Claw’ Review: Zac Efron, Pumped and Inspired, Leads an Absorbing True-Life Drama About a Pro-Wrestling Dynasty

Jeremy Allen White costars in Sean Durkin's film about the Von Erichs, a family of wrestlers in the late '70s and '80s who were going to obey the will of their father, even if it killed them.

The Iron Claw - Variety Critic's Pick

Gladiators, pain freaks, brutes, clowns, true athletes, fake competitors: The slab-of-meat stars of professional wrestling are all those things. And back in the 1980s, when wrestling was reaching its cultural zenith, it almost looked as if you could divide the world between those who took wrestling on the level and those who dismissed it as a vulgar, over-the-top bad joke.

Popular on Variety

Out of the ring, Fritz is a deeply conservative family man who raises his clan like something out of the 1950s. But that’s easier said than done, since the movie then leaps ahead to 1979, where we meet the Von Erich sons, who are shaggy paragons of post-counterculture red-state America. The film’s central figure, Kevin Von Erich, is played by Efron, who has undergone a physical transformation nearly as dramatic as De Niro’s in “Raging Bull.” We’ve seen dozens of actors pump themselves up, but Kevin’s body is a mass of steroidal muscle he wears like a second skin, and under his choppy bangs he’s both handsome and slugged. Efron, with heavy-lidded eyes, resembles David Cassidy crossed with the Hulk. Kevin is a rising star on the wrestling circuit, but what he looks like is a young man encased in his dreams.

Kevin and his brothers, who will soon be drawn into the ring along with him, see themselves as athletes, pure and simple. They never regard wrestling as a joke, and neither does the film, which strikes a tone of earnest and tragic sincerity. “The Iron Claw” shows us exactly how wrestling works and, at the same time, how its stars could take themselves as seriously as they do. Just before a tag-team match, we watch the four wrestlers planning the choreography; the moves and bits are all plotted out. But there’s room for improv, and what can never be staged is the star bravura. To move up and be awarded with a title shot means executing the leaps, slams, and gougings to violent perfection, turning it all into riveting theater and getting the crowd to like you.

We’re rooting for Kevin to climb that ladder, to work his way up from contests in the local Sportatorium to a shot at National Wrestling Association champion. But there is competition. It comes from his brothers, who his father doesn’t just coach — he ranks them, setting them against each other so that they’re all competing for his love and approval.

There is David (Harris Dickinson), a mellow, long-blond-angel-haired prankster who’s drawn into the ring almost despite himself. There is Kerry (“The Bear’s” Jeremy Allen White in his first big-ticket film role), a moody, taciturn aspiring Olympic discus thrower who falls back on wrestling after President Jimmy Carter decides to have America boycott the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow. (Fritz glares at this announcement on TV as if Carter were burning the flag.) And there is Mike (Stanley Simons), mild and unathletic, who has no interest in wrestling — his passion is fronting a rock band — and who we think couldn’t possibly compete in the ring. But he, too, allows his father to mold him into a hellacious circus fighter.

A movie with a message that says “A father should not rule his family like a passive homicidal sadist” might seem to be a bit out of time. Yet Holt McCallany plays this iron-clawed domestic dictator on a human scale; he shows us the love entwined with the mercilessness. And while the movie comes on as a critique of hyper-competitive male aggression, its view of how that can turn toxic is rooted in the showbiz hyperbole of pro wrestling. Maybe if the Von Erichs worshipped an ideal of masculine strength that was built less on fantasy, they wouldn’t have lost their bearings.

“The Iron Claw” has a more convincing period atmosphere than “The Holdovers,” it showcases the media theatrics of wrestling with an eerie unironic innocence, and the entire cast is superb. White’s role is a bit underwritten, but he uses his hangdog handsomeness to suggest muffled demons. Harris Dickinson, who played the model/influencer in “Triangle of Sadness,” makes as convincing a Texas hippie as anyone in “Dazed and Confused,” and Lily James, as the girlfriend Kevin marries, is the soul of hardheaded devotion. But in the end it’s Zac Efron’s movie. He plays Kevin as a moving simpleton with hidden depths, a fellow of such decency that the one thing he won’t do is disobey. He’s the film’s Cringing Bull.

The young and gorgeous Zac Efron, well known for his tanned abs is also a very talented actor and singer, is there really anything this man can't do? He burst into the spotlight in 2006 for his role in Disney's High School Musical film as he sang, danced and played basketball whilst winning every young girls heart. In 2007 he showed how good his singing ability is by performing in the film adaption of the Broadway show 'Hairspray', but it did put in to question whether he could actually sing well live and without the use of auto tune. But back in 2012 he proved his ability to sing live as we saw Zac on the Ellen show whilst he surprised the audience by singing a duet with American pop star Taylor Swift, both of them giving a perfectly tuned performance. There's no doubt that he's a talented guy, but I'm pretty sure the majority of us like him for his shirtless performance more than his singing ability, which happened to win him an award from his appearance in the film 'That Awkward Moment' at the 2014 Movie Awards. As he went to the stage to collect his award he received a deafening applause from the audience, he brings out the crazed fan girl in all of us. If Zac Efron decides to do a performance in the UK any time soon then I'm sure everyone will be fighting to get a ticket, including me.

It is madness when you come to the terms that the movie High School Musical was released in movie theatres all over the world over a decade ago! If there is something that Zac Efron is, it is hard working. He is one of those actor/musicians who hasn’t had a steady decline due to heavy partying. He has pushed on through and through with a long list of roles on his CV. Tonight he performs a variety of songs that he is known for, even a couple of the High School Musical soundtrack, which makes the audience get up out of their seats and join in with every word dancing and clapping along. One of the things that I was unaware of attending the show is that Efron can play guitar to. We’re not talking crazy standards but just enough to look cool and accompany him self in these performances. There is a fantastic part of the set when he plays a fantastic version of the chart topper “Pumped Up Kicks”, similar to the version that he performed with Taylor Swift on the Ellen Degeneres show a couple of years ago, his tone is very clear with a little bit of an edge. Despite being the tender ages of 27, its quite a coming of age performance nonetheless.

London real estate is about to get the 'selling sunset' treatment, l.a.'s real estate upfronts reveal penthouse a at rosewood residences beverly hills.

The Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile star’s now former home in Los Angeles is privately squirreled away down a long, gated driveway on more than three-quarters of an acre of hillside property with staggering views that sweep over L.A., from the downtown skyline to the Pacific Ocean. Described in marketing materials as a “perfect celebrity haven” and a “stylish zen contemporary compound,” the estate comprises a flat-roofed two-story main house with four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms plus a separate one-bedroom and one-bath guesthouse.

Listing photographs show the home’s sparsely furnished open-plan living spaces feature glossy wood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and numerous personal touches: A Bruce Lee painting dominates the foyer, a collection of skateboards hang over the stair well next to the dining room and a vintage pinball machine anchors one corner of the family room.

The Los Feliz property was listed with Kathrin Nicholson of The Agency, while the buyer was represented by John Fanelly at Del Rey Urban Brokerage.

Water pours over a golden ziggurat in the entrance gallery that’s separated from the dining area by a stairwell. The fireplace hearth floats above the floor in the living room, and in the gourmet kitchen, which likely appealed to the buyer, co-founder and CEO of a cutting-edge L.A.-based cookware company, the window over the sink extends all the way to the high ceiling and a couple of egg-shaped light fixtures hang over the center island.

Three more en suite bedrooms, plus a huge games room and lounge that’s complete with a ping pong table, are located on the lower level.

Unsurprisingly outfitted for the muscle-toned actor as a fitness room, the one-bedroom and one-bath guesthouse is discreetly tucked under the estate’s graveled parking area and four-vehicle carport.

Protected by a camera-equipped security system, every room in the sunlight-flooded house spills out to stone-paved terraces that run the length of the house on both levels. The largest section of the upper-level terrace cantilevers out over a circular spa that spills over into a swimming pool nestled in the treetops some eight or ten feet below.

Late last year it was widely reported in Australia and across the world that the in-demand actor, whose numerous upcoming projects include a remake of the 1987 film Three Men and a Bab y, had quietly acquired a huge piece of land near Byron Bay. More recent reports cite title records to confirm the 33-year-old actor paid $2 million for a by-all-accounts ungodly gorgeous 318-acre spread in the Glengarrie area of the Tweed Valley, about an hour’s drive north of Byron Bay and a half hour from Gold Coast.

Initial reports suggested Efron and his live-in Aussie gal-pal Vanessa Valladares planned to build a romantic getaway, but they have since split. Some reports say he ended it because work commitments meant he was “about to become too busy for a girlfriend.”

The property was available through Brad Franks of Ray White.

It doesn’t take long to understand the level of commitment Zac Efron brings to “The Iron Claw” as Texas wrestling brother Kevin Von Erich. Just one look at the taut mass of muscle and sinew he’s become for the role will do the trick.

It’s also clear from the get-go how invested writer-director Sean Durkin was in telling the true-life tale of the Von Erich family wrestling dynasty, which — shockingly, to those of us unfamiliar with the story — suffered a set of tragic losses almost too staggering to imagine. It’s hardly a spoiler alert to say that Kevin, by 35, was the only surviving brother of an original six. (He is now 66). Indeed, so devastating is the story that Durkin felt the need to excise brother Chris, one of three lost to suicide, from this retelling entirely.

Durkin has said he was a committed wrestling fan from his childhood in England, where he scoured magazines to learn more about the exploits of the Von Erichs, who made their name in the colorful, high-flying, entertainment-heavy wrestling world of the ’70s and early ’80s. And from that affection stems perhaps both the strength and weakness of “The Iron Claw.” It’s a film that tells its stunning tale with heart and conviction, yet seems somehow reticent about pointing a truly critical finger at either the brutality of a sport that broke this family, or the man who seemed to give his sons no choice in the matter: family patriarch Fritz Von Erich.

It is with Fritz that we begin. In a 1950s-era prologue rendered in black-and-white, the eventual patriarch and promoter (an excellent Holt McCallany) is in the ring himself, displaying his famed “Iron Claw” maneuver: a punishing two-handed grip on a doomed opponent’s skull, crushing it like a vice.

This image released by A24 shows Lily James, left, and Zac Efron in a scene from "The Iron Claw." (Brian Roedel/A24 via AP)

Waiting in the parking lot is Fritz’s wife, Doris (Maura Tierney) and their young kids. Doris is shocked that Fritz has acquired a spiffy new car to attach to their trailer, something they can’t afford, but he tells her it’s all part of the persona he’s building: You need to be the toughest and the strongest, and then nothing will be able to hurt you.

Flash forward to 1979, and Fritz has passed the dream of becoming heavyweight champion onto his remaining sons. (One of them has died at a young age in a terrible accident.) Kevin is doing his best to be the son who gets there first. Among his exploits in the ring, Kevin climbs up on top of the ropes to attack from the air, leaping onto an opponent. These fight scenes are vivid and exciting, although if you’re like me, eventually you’ll be shouting at the screen, begging for it all to stop, lest one more son get hurt.

This image released by A24 shows Jeremy Allen White, left, and Harris Dickinson in a scene from "The Iron Claw." (Brian Roedel/A24 via AP)

But at the kitchen table, there’s never talk of stopping. Fritz tells Kevin, David and Mike that they all need to work harder to win that coveted championship belt. Mike, the youngest, is interested in music, but Fritz doesn’t care. Privately, Kevin seeks out his mother and asks her to intervene on Mike’s behalf. But Doris relies only on her faith; this wrestling business is between the men, she says. (It is horrifying to watch her, powerless, as the sadness multiplies.)

Who will achieve Dad’s dream first? Will it be David, who’s a great talker and taunter in the ring? Or Kevin, who possesses great physical strength but is awkward and unable to master the art of self-promotion? Suddenly, brother Kerry, a discus thrower with Olympic hopes, enters the scene. When President Jimmy Carter declares the United States won’t be sending a team to Moscow in 1980, Fritz decrees that Kerry (Jeremy Allen White) will join his brothers in the ring.

There are a few lovely scenes of the brothers bonding, playing football, doing what brothers do. But the pace of the film, with its wrestling sequences and successive tragedies, doesn’t allow for much relationship development. An exception is Kevin’s relationship with Pam (a lovely and soulful Lily James), who woos the shy Kevin and eventually marries him, their wedding a brief joyful moment (with an infectious family line-dancing scene).

This image released by A24 shows Lily James, left, and Zac Efron in a scene from "The Iron Claw." (Brian Roedel/A24 via AP)

But tragedy is not far off. For those unfamiliar with the Von Erich tale, we won’t reveal more plot here, other than to say that loss does not soften Fritz. At one funeral, he orders his grieving sons to remove their sunglasses, then forbids them to cry.

Efron, with his rock-hard physique and ’70s mullet, turns in some of the most affecting work of his career. White, too, is excellent if more inscrutable as Kerry, initially the golden boy until his own brush with disaster sends him into a downward spiral. Harris Dickinson as David and a heartbreaking Stanley Simons as Mike round out the strong ensemble. But the film does not spend a lot of time on the emotional tissue that connects the brothers, who seem more bound by loyalty and mutual hardship than anything else.

The film’s emotional ending brings well-earned tears, thanks to Efron’s delicate portrayal. But when we’re informed by means of an epilogue that the Von Erich family in 2009 was admitted to the WWE Hall of Fame, it’s hard not to consider a question that the film doesn’t seem to be attacking head-on: Was any of this worth it?

“The Iron Claw,” an A24 release, has been Rated R by the Motion Picture Association “for language, suicide, some sexuality and drug use. Running time: 130 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Fact-checking 'The Iron Claw': What's real (and what's not) in Zac Efron's wrestling movie

zac efron house tour

Spoiler alert: We're breaking down plot points in Zac Efron's new movie "The Iron Claw" (streaming on Max now). Beware if you haven't seen it yet.

Movie fans know about Dwayne “The Rock" Johnson , Dave Bautista and John Cena – pro wrestlers who became stars in pop culture. Those same people might not know about the legend of the Von Erich family, though, and they're who director Sean Durkin wants to reach with “ The Iron Claw .”

The real-life drama chronicles the successes of the wrestling Von Erich brothers – Kevin (Efron), David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), Mike (Stanley Simons) and Chris (who isn't seen in the movie) – and their tragedies : Four of the five siblings died between 1984 and 1993, three by suicide.

“Iron Claw” is a movie about the love of wrestling, but “it’s really a family story,” Durkin says. “It’s about the ideas of masculinity that we put into boys about what a man should be and how those can be crushing."

The film is based on the true story of the Von Erichs but, like the world of wrestling itself, figuring out what’s real and what’s not can be tricky. Durkin talks through what's fact versus fiction in “Iron Claw.”

Spoilers! Why Zac Efron 'lost it' in emotional ending scene of new movie 'The Iron Claw'

Did Fritz Von Erich’s name change flirt with a family curse?

When Kevin takes future wife Pam (Lily James) on a first date, he tells her how his father, Fritz (played by Holt McCallany), adopted his grandmother’s surname, even though it was seemingly cursed because her family had weathered all sorts of tragedy.

“I think that’s true,” Durkin says of Fritz (born Jack Adkisson), who started using the Von Erich name as a hated Nazi ring villain in the 1950s and ‘60s before running the World Class Championship Wrestling organization. “There are certain things that you pick up in the world of wrestling that are myth and some that are not. I had it in my mind that was a reliable story I had heard.”

The “Von Erich curse” now refers to the deaths that befell the family's sons: David, 25, in 1984 (from a ruptured intestine); and Mike, 23, in 1987, Chris, 21, in 1991, and Kerry, 33, in 1993 (all by suicide). A sixth son, firstborn Jack Jr., was accidentally electrocuted and drowned at age 6 in 1959.

'The Iron Claw': Zac Efron is ripped and terrific in the wrestling true story

Did Kevin Von Erich receive a posthumous postcard from his brother David?

In the movie, the family is mourning the unexpected loss of David, who suffered medical problems in Japan, when Kevin receives a postcard that David mailed him with the note “I miss you, brother.”

“I made that up,” Durkin says, though the suicide notes in the movie were verbatim. “The idea of David not having a note but having something written to create the symmetry between the brothers felt important.”

Did Kevin and Kerry Von Erich flip a coin to see who would wrestle Ric Flair for the heavyweight title?

David was supposed to take on Flair for the National Wrestling Alliance heavyweight title – the belt Fritz had always dreamed of having in the family – at a big Texas event. When he dies, Fritz has Kevin and Kerry – who takes up the family business when his Olympic dreams are dashed – flip a coin to see who gets the match instead. Kerry wins, and that night after his victory, he gets in a motorcycle accident that costs him his right foot.

Kerry did defeat Flair just months after David’s death in 1984, but the accident actually happened in 1986. The flip, though, was legit, Durkin says. “If Kerry doesn't wrestle that match and get in the accident, what's his life like? When I look at the family, I see these alternate paths: If David doesn't go to Japan and he goes to a doctor, does the chain of events ever start? If Mike doesn't kill himself, do Chris and Kerry ever kill themselves?”

'The Iron Claw': How Zac Efron learned pro wrestling 'is not as easy as it looks on TV'

Were there really fake Von Erich family members?

Over the years, wrestlers took on the Von Erich moniker who weren’t related to the family: In 1985 after Mike was injured, Fritz Von Erich hired Ricky Vaughn to play cousin “Lance,” the son of Waldo Von Erich, Fritz’s tag-team partner and "brother."

That time when Fritz tried to keep the dynasty going after David's death is represented in a quick scene. Mike is sidelined with toxic shock syndrome after shoulder surgery, Kerry’s not back in action yet after losing his foot, and Kevin is seen unhappily wrestling a tag-team match with Lance Von Erich (real wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman).

“I was so fascinated by that period,” Durkin says, though this “imposter” plays a fleeting role. “At that point in the movie, it's about Kevin's emotional journey through all the loss that he was going through, and that just felt much more important.”

Why isn’t Chris Von Erich portrayed in 'The Iron Claw'?

The most noticeable aspect of the movie for hardcore wrestling buffs is who's not there: The youngest Von Erich brother is missing from the narrative. Chris' story shares thematic aspects with other siblings, and Durkin was “years” into writing the “Iron Claw” script when he “recognized that unfortunately there's a repetition to that tragedy that would be hard for a movie to sustain. I grappled with that for a very long time and finally made the tough decision, (but) it felt like the right one.”

Streamlining the Von Erich saga into a feature-length movie was “an impossible task. There's so much that got left out,” Durkin says. The death of David's daughter of SIDS at 13 weeks old is not shown, nor is Kerry's family depicted. “There was never going to be room for everything, and so every decision was a difficult one, made with care and consideration to get it into a focused movie that is at the core about Kevin's survival.”

The Iron Claw: Why The US Boycotted The 1980 Summer Olympics

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for The Iron Claw.

  • President Carter led the 1980 Olympic boycott, affecting Kerry Von Erich's wrestling career and leading to a tragic outcome in The Iron Claw.
  • The film touches on the global impact of the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics and how it shaped the Von Erich family's story.
  • Despite receiving no Oscar nominations, The Iron Claw is praised as one of the best wrestling films of all time, capturing the rise and fall of the legendary Von Erich brothers.

The United States and several other countries boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics as depicted in The Iron Claw . While there are some details left out in The Iron Claw regarding the true story of the Von Erich family , the film does a great job overall of capturing the rise and fall of the legendary wrestling brothers . Some viewers and critics have even called writer/director Sean Durkin's The Iron Claw the best wrestling movie ever made despite receiving zero Oscar nominations in 2023, snubbing Zac Efron of his first shot at the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The Iron Claw takes place over the span of roughly 12 years between 1979 and the early 1990s. Actual footage of U.S. President Jimmy Carter was used in The Iron Claw. President Carter was elected as the 39th President of the United States in 1976 and served from January 1977 to January 1981. Carter, a Democrat, is the oldest living former U.S. President alive today at 99 years old. Although he had no way of knowing it at the time, his decision to withdraw the United States from the 1980 Olympics would have an enormous effect on the Von Erich legacy.

The Iron Claw is available to stream on Max.

President Jimmy Carter Decided That The US Would Boycott The 1980 Summer Olympics

The u.s. had never boycotted the olympic games before president carter.

The United States was just one of a record-setting 67 nations that chose to opt out of the 1980 Summer Olympics in protest of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan that began in December 1979.

The United States had never boycotted the Olympic Games before President Carter did just that in 1980 when the host city was Moscow, Russia. The United States was just one of a record-setting 67 nations that chose to opt out of the 1980 Summer Olympics in protest of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan that began in December 1979. The invasion would spark the Afghan-Soviet War that lasted for nearly ten years before ending in early 1989. Boycotting the 1980 Summer Olympics was only one of the measures that the United States took against the Soviet Union in protest of its invasion of Afghanistan.

The United States effectively led the global boycott of the Olympic Games in Moscow and was also joined by China, Japan, Canada, Argentina, Iran, West Germany, and Saudi Arabia. It remains the only boycott of the Summer Olympic Games in United States history. The USSR responded by boycotting the 1984 Summer Olympics that were held in Los Angeles, California. The only other time that the U.S. boycotted any Olympic Games was in 2022 , when the Winter Olympics were held in Beijing, China. The U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia all boycotted due to concerns about human rights abuse.

Why Kevin Von Erich Wrestles Barefoot In The Iron Claw

Zac Efron's character in The Iron Claw Kevin Von Erich notably wrestles barefoot even though his opponents and teammates step into the ring in boots.

How Many Countries Boycotted The 1980 Summer Olympics

67 nations joined the u.s.-led boycott.

Carter upheld his position to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics unless the Soviet Union withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, which it did not.

Jimmy Carter and the United States led an effort to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics that included 67 total nations. Most of these countries were in Asia and South America. Although the Olympic hopeful athletes of the United States were not permitted to compete in the games, there was actually widespread support for the boycott from major competitors, most notably Muhammad Ali. Ali traveled to four different countries in Africa to persuade their governments to join the U.S.-led boycott , finding success with Kenya. The Liberty Bell Classic was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1980 and became known as the "Olympic Boycott Games."

Carter upheld his position to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics unless the Soviet Union withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, which it did not. The United Kingdom, France, and Australia supported the boycott but left the decision to compete in the 1980 Summer Olympics up to its individual athletes. Athletes from Spain and Italy were permitted to compete under a neutral flag , becoming two of sixteen nations whose athletes were not officially represented by their flags or anthems at the 1980 Summer Olympics. The USSR did not raise the American flag at the end of the games but did raise the city flag of Los Angeles.

The Iron Claw's Riskiest Scene Proves Why The Movie Is So Great

One emotional scene in The Iron Claw proves to be its riskiest by the film's end but also offers the greatest cathartic punch to the audience.

How The 1980 Summer Olympics Changed Kerry Von Erich's Career

Von erich developed a drug addiction and crime record.

Kerry Von Erich was set to compete in the 1980 Olympic Games but was robbed of his opportunity due to the boycott. As depicted in The Iron Claw , he got in a motorcycle accident in 1986 and had to get his right foot amputated as a result. Kerry continued to wrestle with a prosthetic foot which he was able to keep a secret for the rest of his life. He reportedly developed an addiction to painkillers following the amputation of his foot and was arrested twice on drug-related charges, which led to the WWF firing him in 1991. The Iron Claw also captures Kerry's tragic death by suicide.
